Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back with the Hall of Fame head coach of the
Huskies Yukon and Xavier tomorrow night at the Excel Center,
and that'll be a seven o'clock pregame for a seven
thirty tip and that's over on the River one O
five nine if you want to catch that, and it's
also available as always on the Varsity Network app and
the Varsitynetwork dot Com. Here with Gino as we talk
Yukon women's basketball. And one of the topics that came

(00:20):
up today during the media session with page out Obviously
other people the chance to step up, and Caitlin Chen
is one of them, because you know, when she played
for Carlott Princeton, she was the number one option on offense.
Certainly that is not the case here at Yukon, and
she has shown that, particularly in her assist numbers that
have gone significantly up at seven on Sunday for example.

(00:40):
But now she's probably gonna look to score a little more.

Speaker 2 (00:43):
I think, so, you know, and that's something we've discussed
that seemed to be kind of her comfort level at
the beginning of training camp and at the beginning of
the season and the little bit at a time, you know,
her focus started to become more working to get other

(01:07):
people involved, and I admire that, but I think you
can accomplish that much better by.

Speaker 3 (01:16):
Being such a threat to score yourself.

Speaker 2 (01:19):
And she's really good at finishing around the basket. You know,
she has a good mid range pull up, and she's
a better three point shooter than I think she was
at Princeton, So there's a lot of things that she
can do off and.

Speaker 3 (01:35):
She's a really good free throw shooter.

Speaker 2 (01:36):
So there's a lot that she can bring and I
don't want her to sacrifice all that just to try
to get us threes. I think the more she tries
to score, the more she will score, and actually the
more threes will get because the people will know that
they have to collapse, that they can't just fan out
waiting for the past.

Speaker 1 (01:56):
She better defensively than you thought she would be.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
She can be. Yeah, I think she.

Speaker 2 (02:02):
I think she's adjusting because I don't I don't know
that Princeton picked up full court a lot, so what
we're asking her to do maybe a tad different than
what she's used to.

Speaker 3 (02:13):
But I feel like.

Speaker 2 (02:17):
I feel comfortable, uh that if we have her and
KK out on the floor together, that we can, you know,
we can do some things, and and we did it
in a Notre Dame game in the second half. We
did it in the USC game in the second half.
So it's you know, we prove that we can do
it and and that does actually help the two of them,

(02:45):
and especially Kate and Caitlin find ways to score that
aren't necessarily scripted in the half court, you know, which
I think helps players like her.

Speaker 1 (03:00):
Yeah, well that's part of your figure it out thing
that still exists. Is it Is it as relevant now?
Is it ever has been? Or because the way the
kids don't practice nearly as much coming in coming into
ukon prior.

Speaker 3 (03:13):
It's it's yeah, it's it's a tough thing because.

Speaker 2 (03:19):
You you want to be able to figure things out,
but you also have to have thick skin.

Speaker 3 (03:27):
And you have to have a mentality of.

Speaker 2 (03:33):
Yeah, just let me go and let me do my thing,
and if I screw it up, I don't care. You know,
I think too many times, you know, players want to
be directed, you know, they want to be sure.

Speaker 3 (03:46):
It's like.

Speaker 2 (03:48):
If you're talking to a second baseman and he says, okay,
so if the balls hit to me here, who do
I throw it to Well, it depends. Well, what if
it's it to me here? Well, it depends.

Speaker 3 (04:00):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
I mean, you can't make these decisions ahead of time.
You have to read the play and you have to
make a play too many times. These kids want to
know what's my next step. Well, we don't know what
that is. So you're going to have to figure that out.
And it's okay if you make a mistake, provided you

(04:22):
don't make the same one over and over and over again.
And the biggest difference, I think that is the fear
of making mistakes. That's probably inherent in a lot of
kids today.

Speaker 1 (04:32):
Yeah, Asy's back, getting herself in a little bit more
of a rhythm. But I've got to imagine with this
stop and go, with the little knix that she has
injury wise, that does not help for me. For me,
not only just a playing standpoint, but from a shooting standpoint,
because you're not in there game after game after game
getting the reps that you need.

Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah, it's it's been it's been a tough go for
her the last couple of years. You know, there's been
so many, as you said, starts and stops, so many
missed opportunities that it's got to affect your rhythm, it's
got to affect your.

Speaker 3 (05:13):
Your view of you know, self.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
Confidence even because any kind of doubt in an athlete
is not good. And as he is a thinker, you know,
as he is a perfectionist. So it's it's it's gonna
take a little bit of time for her to get
back into as they say, back into the flow of things.

(05:40):
But as we watch and practice, you know, she's getting
closer and closer and.

Speaker 3 (05:45):
Without Page, now we're really gonna need her.

Speaker 2 (05:50):
You know, she's got to be that that threat.

Speaker 3 (05:54):
That we have to have.

Speaker 2 (05:57):
So I'm hopeful that that that this lapse where we
don't have Page helps Hazy.

Speaker 1 (06:05):
Yeah, Well, the Louisville game, it certainly looked like she
was getting back to herself. And the one play that
stands out for me is the post a place she's
on the right side of the floor, backs or defender down,
does a spin, does a reverse. That's the asy that
you know, we got to see when she was in
her in good.

Speaker 3 (06:20):
Shape and confident. Yeah.

Speaker 2 (06:22):
Yeah, and that's the biggest thing, you know, feeling confident
that regardless of what what the scenario, that that that
I find myself in I got something for that. You know,
if I need a reverse layup, I got it. If
I need to pull up, I got it. If I
need a open three, I got it.

Speaker 3 (06:39):
You know.

Speaker 2 (06:42):
That that kind of mentality is what gives you confidence
and it allows you to play more aggressively. So yeah,
but it's you know, it's it's January. If this was,
you know, the first week in March, I wouldn't feel
as good. But we got a long way to go.

Speaker 3 (07:02):
Yeah, sure do.

Speaker 1 (07:03):
And it starts tomorrow night with Xavier back with Gino
with more on the Yukon women's basketball coaches, showing a
minute here on Learfield
