Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back with Gino Oriema.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
The Huskies back at it on Sunday when they take
on the Paul Blue Demons.
Speaker 1 (00:05):
Depfist joins me on.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
The broadcast is always twelve thirty on the Yukon Sports Network,
Varsity Network App, and the Varsity Network dot Com. In fact,
we've got games Friday, Saturday and Sunday this coming weekend
with the Hall of Fame head coach as Huskies get
set for the Paul Gino. Kk Arnold I think has
been has improved greatly.
Speaker 1 (00:25):
I mean there's a lot of pressure on her. Obviously,
with both.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Page and Caitlyn moving on, She's now the point guard.
Her assistant turnover ratio is really good, and she continues
to do what KK does best, hassled defensively.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
I mean, she's really getting after it again.
Speaker 3 (00:40):
That's what you want to see, you know. You want
players to establish an identity, you know, a reputation. This
is who I am, this is what I do, and
then live it, you know, every game. The thing we
talk about a lot is you can't be like, well,
sometimes she is and sometimes she's not. Well, then that
(01:03):
means you're not you know, uh, you have to be
that every single night that we play. And Kk's gotten
to that point where we know what we're going to
get every single night. She's going to be that defensive
uh kind of menaced that we need her to be.
She's gonna set a tone for us, uh with with
(01:24):
the pressure. Yeah, she is going to push the ball,
uh and push the pace and keep the pace going.
That's you know, that's the growth that she's made. That
that the and and that's something again a Connecticut thing
that we try to stress to our players as they
(01:44):
get a little bit older, that we need you to
be consistent. We need to know what we're going to
get every night. And uh, you know, her confidence is
way high off with her yesterday about this and you know,
she feels like she's in a great place and knows
her game, knows herself. So I'm I'm absolutely thrilled with
(02:10):
with with where KK is right now.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
You know, if I told you, speaking of guards, that
Ashland Shade was one of your best offensive rebounders, what
would be your response to that? Because I think I
don't think there's been a game this year yet where
she hasn't had at least one offensive rebound.
Speaker 3 (02:28):
No, she's she's done. You know, she's done a lot
of great things. You know, the the ball happens to
go in, sometimes it doesn't go in sometimes, you know,
and and and she's gotten off to like not a
great start shooting the ball. But I think you can
make up for a lot of things. Good shooting makes
(02:51):
up for a lot of things. You know. So when
you shoot the ball, people think you play great, and
you might have been terrible and everything else, you know,
so not the bow well and getting involved and you know,
what are we doing defensively? You know, what are we
doing on the offensive boards? What are we doing on
you know, on the defensive boards? You know, uh, you
know those kinds of things. You know, can we get
(03:12):
to the basket a little bit more so? Those things
that that I think indicate how you're playing. She's she's
still doing those things. And I eventually, like they always do,
you know, the shots start dropping and and you have
to go with you know, past history. And that's what
they do.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
Want to ask you about Chalice Fisher. I haven't mentioned
her name at all this season. Last couple of games,
late in games, she's she's contributed me in a couple
of nice plays. What are your thoughts on her development
so far and where when uh? And is she heading
in the right direction as a young freshman.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Well, you know, I think in the in the time
that she's been on the court, Uh, I think people
can see uh both sides of of of Kalise. You know,
one is uh kind of raw and kind of not sure,
sometimes just uh like wandering around or sometimes overly aggressive,
(04:25):
kind of out of control. And then you see other
times when you when you watch her and you think
she's unique on our team. There's nobody that can get
to the basket better than better than Kalise. Uh. She
hasn't shown defensively as much as she can do, but
she will. Uh. But when we put her in a
(04:48):
ball screen, man, she's she's way different than anybody else
that we have uh in that regard, so little by little,
you know.
Speaker 2 (05:00):
Uh.
Speaker 3 (05:01):
You know, she's young in a lot of ways. And uh,
I think as she grows and as she matures, hopefully
throughout the season, I'm gonna use her more simply because
she is so different.
Speaker 1 (05:15):
What are your thoughts at easy so far?
Speaker 2 (05:17):
It just seems that she has the conference level that
we haven't seen in past years because she's completely healthy now.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
Yeah, you know, as he's kind of a I've said
this before. You know, she's kind of an enigma. You know,
you're you're, you're quite taken by uh her incredible uh
shooting stroke and how she gets her shout off, and
how beautiful it is, and how great her footwork is,
(05:52):
and and and and you you expect unfairly. I would
say that every time she shoots the ball, it's going
in that there's no way that this kid could ever
miss the shot. And she does go through moments or stretches,
long stretches where that's exactly what happens, And so people
(06:14):
begin to go, you know, wow, you mean she went
five for fourteen or whatever. That's not possible. Well, you know,
human beings, that's what happens. You know, the best players
in the world shoot fifty percent. You know, you're not
going to shoot sixty percent from the three point line
(06:35):
in the whole season. I mean, I hope she does.
She's certainly capable, but that's certainly not that's certainly not,
you know, by any chance normal. So I think she's
in a great, great place, the confidence that she has,
(06:57):
I think as well as she's shooting the ball now,
I think she's playing even better than she was shooting it. Defensively,
she's she's a lot more solid and on the ball stuff,
and she's gotten better at recognizing off the ball stuff.
(07:21):
I hope I should say I wish you would get
to the free throw a line more because you know
she's a terrific pre pro shooter, and you know she
proved that in the Michigan game that she can make
them any time. But yeah, I would. I would say,
right now, you know, how can I get her even
(07:43):
more shots? And and let's see why not? Why can't
she shoot fifty percent from the three point line?
Speaker 2 (07:50):
More with Gino here on the UKN Women's Basketball Coaches Show.
Speaker 1 (07:53):
