Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. Husky's travel
to Florida take on Florida Atlantic. We'll talk about them
in a few moments. They're four and six on the
year after starting two and one. They score a bundle
of points, so it's going to be a challenge. Jim.
Let's talk about your offense because you've got a few
guys here who are vying for some national awards which
are very prestigious. I'm going to go to Skyler belfor
(00:22):
a semifinalists right now in the Bleetnikoff Award category. He's
got ninety three catches. And I'm a little old school
on this, but I was a Fred Berletnikoff fan. If
you can believe that, going wait, I right with the
cutoff sleeves and you know, ten degree weather and the
guy that looked like he what is he doing on
(00:42):
a football field making every catch under the sun? Anyway,
if you're considered a semi finalist in a category that's
named after Fred Blittnikoff, that's pretty big.
Speaker 2 (00:53):
Yeah, that's that's a tremendous honor I believe for Skyler,
I think it's a reflection of him as a player.
As a person, as a worker, as a guy that's committed.
I think it's a reflection of Kashif Moore, whos his coach,
and the other guys in that room that you know,
push him every day, and I'm talking about his teammates.
(01:14):
I think it's a great reflection on our offensive line
and tight ends and backs given Joe the time that
he that he needs to find Skyler. And then it's
a reflection on Joe, you know, and the trust camaraderie
that he's built up with Skyler over these last couple
of years. So that's a great one to see. I
think I can tell you as long as we don't
(01:36):
get it out and tweet it out. But Chris Freeman,
I believe, is now a semifinalist for the lou Grose Award,
which goes to the top kicker in the country as well.
So and there's some others.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
Yeah, I know lou Grows, by the way, the straight
ahead kicker for the Cleveland Browns. For those of us
listening who don't know who lou Gros is, he was
the guy that had the flat toe right for the shoe.
Speaker 2 (01:59):
On his kay all used to kind of have that right.
The old flat, the squared off till they were straight
on kickers. You don't see that anymore.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
He was listening when I was growing up watching that stuff.
He was the scariest kicker because we always felt like,
as a giant fan, he's gonna kick a fifty yarder
and beat us. I can tell kind of guy. He was.
Skyler Bell at eight catches against the Air Force, got
one hundred and forty three and two years over two
thousand yards Figna Jo Fernano. You mentioned three thousand yards
(02:30):
of this season, and we talk about him almost every
week because statistically he has not had a real down day.
Credit the offensive line obviously and the backs that have
to block for him. But a quarterback, and you've seen
a lot of great ones, they have to have a
certain skill in that pocket, and he seems to have
(02:51):
it to be able to step up still, keep his
eyes down the field since where the receivers are going
to come open, and then deliver the ball. That's that's
the other thing to me which has been impressive about
Joe Finiano. He's able to deliver the ball quickly. I
mean when he sees the man breaking open, you got
to hit him and you got to be accurate, and
he's been doing that.
Speaker 2 (03:10):
Yeah, Joe. You know, I was lucky to be around
some really good quarterback coaches in my career growing up,
and you know, Bill Walsh obviously was the most well
known of all those guys, and Mike Holmgren and Don
Corriel and I mean some pretty darn good ones. And
(03:31):
Coach Walsh used to always say the number one attribute
you're looking for in a quarterback is a decision maker
and how he processes. And Joe is shown to be
a really good decision maker, and that's both on and
off the field. You know, he's just a quality person.
He lives his life the right way. He does the
work necessary to be prepared to go out on Saturdays
(03:51):
and play his best game. He's consistent as can be,
and it shows up in the way he plays. You know,
his decision making is has been impeccable and he's got
to continue to do those things. But he's played himself
into a position where people are starting to take notice
of just how good he can be and how good
he's been.
Speaker 1 (04:11):
Yeah, it's a great it's been a great run for
him at ukont Cam Edwards hundred sixty five yards on
the weekend is fourth one hundred yard game. He went
over a thousand yards. He's fourteenth all time in Yukon history.
And there's been some good running backs at Yukon over
the years. Donald Brown comes to mind, who had a
great NFL career as well. Edwards with the one hundred and
sixty five. It was good to see him back, you know,
(04:34):
as a mainstay on the offense. He had great games
all year, but this one was particularly important.
Speaker 2 (04:41):
I thought, I completely agree Mike. He just he's been
having a really good year, but it's been overshadowed a
little bit by you know, what Skyland and Joe have
done in the past game. And you know, he reached
a thousand yards rushing and I don't know how many
times that's been done at Yukon, And it doesn't really matter.
It only matters that Cam was able to get that
(05:02):
done this year once again, with the help of a
tremendous group of offensive linemen and tight ends and receivers
that are willing to go block down field. But to
see how far he's come since he first got here
out of Norwalk, Connecticut, playing dB to you a thousand
yard rusher and really kind of the toughness of this team.
(05:26):
A lot of it comes from him. Is really cool man.
It's really neat to be a part of that. I
love what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah, twenty two carries in the second half when the
game was certainly hanging in the balance, he ran for
one hundred and fifty as Yukon I was able to
beat Air Force. We're going to talk Fau when we
come back. Jimore with us. The Yukon Football Coaches Show
continues on liar Field
