Speaker 1 (00:00):
We're back with Dan Hurley. Do you con men's basketball
coaches show? Mike Chrispino with you, coach, want to talk
to you a little bit about prep game prep. You
have a couple of days between games. How do you
start with the film study or the videotape of previous
games and your opponent? Do you have someone breaking it
down for you? And then do you say, well, we're

(00:20):
going to focus on this when we get together with
the team. What is that process like, because obviously it's
such an important part of getting ready for every game.

Speaker 2 (00:30):
Yeah, I mean, so I'd imagine Luke and these guys,
you know, Luke Kamani now Mike, you know, are probably
consuming you know, seven eight games, you know, and then
you know, but the scouts are split now a third
of the you know, a third for each so you know,
for so for these guys, for the most part, they'll

(00:51):
be responsible for a scout and then you know, they'll
unless they just have bad luck with the way the
schedule falls and conference play, you know, they'll probably have
ten days two weeks before their next one, or at
least a week. You know. So for me, I'm comfortable
watching five, you know, for me, I like to be
able to watch five of the games of our opponent,

(01:14):
and then I want to see if it's someone in league,
I like to watch, uh just all the clips of
how they've guarded us defensively in the prior year, just
what their game plan was reguarding off ball things or
ball screen defense or different different things that they did.
So for me, it's five games and then and then

(01:35):
the way that that team guarded us if we've played
them in the past. Because for me, it's different. You
know that the you know, I've got every scout, you know,
you know, Kamani and Luke and Mike, they've got their
scout and then obviously they don't go on vacation in between. Yeah,
because their position coaches and they're invested and they're looking
to assist whoever has the scout. You know, they're very

(01:57):
aware of the opponent as well. But yeah, I mean
it's it's when you've got when you play, and then
you've got uh, you know, say you play a game,
you we've got to do our self correcting edit of
the game that we just played. And then that next morning,
you know, you're basically glued to the tablet you're watching
it while you're riding the peloton bike. You're watching it,

(02:20):
while you're in the sauna, You're watching it while you're
walking around the building. You basically have your iPad like
the kids these days, but only I'm not on social
media watching TikTok. I'm watching you know, I'm watching game field.

Speaker 1 (02:37):
That's a good idea. You start watching TikTok, you can't stop.
I I'm guilty of it once in a while myself.
Now when you get in a session with the players,
that's my next question. Uh, now you were I think
you you taught history, didn't you? A Saint Benedict's if
I remember right?

Speaker 2 (02:51):
Yeah?

Speaker 1 (02:52):
All right, So you have you have some experience in
keeping guys attention in a classroom, which isn't always easy.
Now you got them in a in a film room
and you're talking about things. How do you keep guys attention?
How do you make sure that it's absorbed what you're
talking about and what you're showing them on tape?

Speaker 2 (03:10):
Well, no, what if they don't love the game? I mean,
if they're in this for clicks or you know, for
the ni L bag. You know there's you know, you
could stand on your head while holding your breath. And
it's not going to matter if you don't have people
that love the game and are truly here to experience
championship level success and glory and to become the best

(03:33):
player they can be. I mean, it doesn't matter what
you're doing up there. So and for you know, I'd say,
for me, it's like when you're when you teach. You know,
when you're a high school teacher and a coach, you
know how to control a huddle, you know how to
control a classroom. You know how to keep people's attention.
You know how to change the inflection of your voice

(03:55):
or or or or the different mannerisms to keep people's
tension and and and speak with energy. And obviously I'm
not very monotone with the way that I communicate, so uh.
And then splicing in different clips, either you know, to
to you know, humor or or or to make a point,

(04:16):
a strong point with a movie clip you know, or
or or a picture of a player or a moment
in history it you know, sometimes just splash those in
to keep them guessing as to what's gonna pop on
the screen next. Is it just going to be a
basketball clip, or is it going to be the old
cartoon of mister Magoo, uh for thirty seconds, because we've

(04:40):
got players that are playing looking like they have no awareness.
They're almost like they can't see it. So yeah, I
mean they're now they look at mister Magoo and like,
look at this cartoon that this old hater is showing us.
But you know it's uh, you know, it gets the
reaction I want keeps them in game.

Speaker 1 (05:02):
Okay, So Butler, the other night, the opening five minutes
were kind of ugly. They look like they came in
ready to roll, and they played well in the first
eight or ten minutes. Tell me about the first tundle
what happened there, because I think the crowd was kind
of stunned. He fell behind nine to two, eleven four whatever.
They were running up and down the court doing whatever

(05:22):
they wanted to. What did you do to reverse that trend?

Speaker 2 (05:26):
I mean it was not how you want to start. Yeah,
it's not how you want to start the big E season,
especially when you put yourself in such a good spot.
So yeah, just to start the game executing what we wanted,
getting the lob dunk and then giving up a dunk
at the other end on a mad dunk I mean,
it just tells you that the group is not ready
to play. You know, I'm tough on the players privately

(05:50):
from a practice standpoint, but publicly, I'm very protective of
the players, and I think sometimes to a fault, I
let them play through things because I'm soaking learned about
their confidence and not embarrassing them or just hurting their
their self belief. So I probably should have gotten three
or four of those starters off the court within the
first minute or two. The turnovers, the lack of a

(06:15):
defensive effort, the lack of the urgency that you need.
So yeah, that's probably one of my faults as a coach.
That is you know, is that is that in those
type of settings, I'll let a player play too long
rather than pull them too early. There's no perfect coach.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Nope, that's for sure. All right, Dan, stick with us.
Got another segment. We're in talking with some big East
what's going on. Your alma Mater's off the pretty good start.
Their Seaton Hall Pirates doing some nice things among others.
We'll be back more of the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
In a moment on lear Field
