Speaker 1 (00:00):
And we're back with Dan Hurley. You've gone Men's Basketball
Coaches Show, Mike chris Pino back online here thanks to
Bob Joyce for jumping in.
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Coach.
Speaker 1 (00:06):
You were talking about Alex Caraban in the previous segment.
Number one in the league in field goal shooting now
over fifty two percent and he plays monster minutes over
thirty three minutes a game. What's different about Alex this
year in terms of his offense? In your mind, he's
shooting it better, he seems more comfortable out there. Maybe
he's under a little less pressure, I'm guessing because you
(00:29):
have a deeper team.
Speaker 2 (00:31):
Yeah, I mean, he's got a better team, so he's
just got a lot a lot better support. But you know,
he's the best player. He's he's you know, he's the
leading player. He's you know, he's the face of his team.
He's you know, he's he's the guy. And you know,
I think his mindset, you know, being a you know
(00:51):
what he's accomplished in his career at the championship success
he's had, and you know, and then what he went
through last year just not being on a team at
quite that level. I think it's made him tougher. I
think it's it's made him better. I think it gave
him things to work on in the offseason. He's gotten
better driving the ball, he's gotten more efficient shooting the ball.
(01:12):
He's you know, he's a better defensive player, he's you know,
he's better in every way. I think he's always playing, like,
you know, at an All American level.
Speaker 1 (01:21):
Yep, Dan Hurley with us the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show,
Solo Ball had a couple of big days in a
row here. He had a little injury, couldn't play in
one of the games to Paul, But in his last seven, coach,
he's sixteen to forty nine from three, so he's almost
up to thirty three percent in that area in those games.
(01:43):
Are you seeing him getting in the groove that he
was in last year in terms of his distant shooting.
He seems more comfortable here in the last few games.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Yeah. I think, you know, as as as Bradlin, well,
first of all, he's too good of a shooter to
kind of be where where he was. Those numbers are
you know, obviously going to come up and hopefully they
continue to come up. But I just think with Braylan
with with with Mulley or Munson or bray or whatever
we're calling him these days. As he as he gets
(02:14):
more comfortable offensively and becomes more of an impact player,
just the better that's going to be for Solo and
Alex and Tarris and Silas and and really the whole team.
Just getting better opportunities, you know, allows you to be
more efficient. He's going to get a better quality of shot.
As Braylan becomes more of a threat like he was
(02:36):
the other day, you know, maybe sometimes Solo is going
to get the weaker defender on the perimeter to guard
him as opposed to always getting the defensive stopper. So
I think for Solo just becoming a better defensive player.
We know the shooting is going to come around, but
I think he's showing signs of better defense, better finishing
(02:57):
at the rim, and those things there just as important
as whether he makes the threes or not.
Speaker 1 (03:01):
Yeah, Braylan Mullins at Xavier six of eleven, five of
ten from three. He is one of those guys every
time he shoots it, you feel like it's going in
every single time. I mean, have you seen a guy
like that in your time coaching?
Speaker 2 (03:15):
Yeah, I have your comparison. Yeah, I mean, well, well,
Cam Spencer, you know, he was a good shooter. Yeah,
still is, and Jordan Hawkins and then you know, just
those two guys here at Yukon, I feel like, uh, now,
you know, he's he's different. He's got aspects of both
(03:36):
of them, you know, like the potentially the efficiency and
accuracy of Cam with the movement shooting of Jordan, the
ability to do at full speed and from deep range.
So yeah, I mean Brayllen, Uh, you know that's a
great development when you start to see him start to understand,
you know, how to use screens in our offense. Uh,
(03:59):
and just his ability to go off script and uh
and just take take shots in the flow of just
basketball happening. Yeah.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
He made that baseline jumper there of the shot clock
running down the other day at Xavier. That was that
was outstanding. Seventeen points also at six rebounds. This guy's
tougher than we all think. I don't know for assists.
He's a good passer. You made the point, he's a ballplayer.
Let's watch this guy play. It's going to be fun
to see the next two months with him.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
Yeah, I mean, he's got some physical strength, he's he
doesn't he's got to get better defensively, all young players do.
But he's not a liability for us on defense. He's
you know, he's learning, he cares, you know, he's probably
physically stronger than you think, you know, and he's a
great team guy. You know, he just you know, he's
(04:48):
there's no ego. You know, he's a guy. Obviously it's
showing up and you know potentially is a one and
done lottery pick, but you wouldn't know it by what,
by how he responds to coaching, or his willingness to
just play hard, whether he's getting shots or not.
Speaker 1 (05:06):
Yeah, when you first met him Braylan Mullens and his family,
what was your first take? Because you just don't know sometimes,
but you get a chance to really talk to somebody,
sit down with him. He is like the perfect guy
to be in this program in my mind, because he
does all those things you were just talking about.
Speaker 2 (05:24):
Yeah, Quiet, you know, I probably first he say, man,
this guy's cool, little quiet. Does he like us? You know,
does he have it? Is he enjoying the visit? But
then you just you love the family, I mean just
you look you spend time with the family and you
just say, these are our type of people. I mean
they fit right in with the with the with the
Bill Klingen and the Spencer family and Craig and Jasmine Hawkins.
(05:46):
I mean they just they fit right in with what
you know, with with with the makeup, the castles. I mean,
it's just all about us winning and just trusting us
coaches to get the most out of their kid. And
that's the that's their mindset. And then that's why you
knew it was potentially going to be a match when
we got into the process. But yeah, he uh, you know,
for a kid that uh you know again is going
(06:09):
to have a chance to to you know, to potentially
be a one and done lottery level player, you never
know that, uh from the way he responds to uh,
to his teammates, to his coaches. Uh, practice is hard.
He's not a complicated kid. He's not on social media.
You know, he's just a ballplayer and a competitor.
Speaker 1 (06:28):
Pretty darn good too, Dan Hurley with us, if we
take a quick break, we're going to look ahead a
little bit at Marquette. Also want to talk about the
dual center thing that Yukon's had going for four years now.
It's amazing back to back to back years where they've
been able to put two centers together productively. You're listening
