Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back with Jim Moore of the Yukon Football Coaches Show
continues on word and upward. It's FIU Florida International at
the Rent Saturday three point thirty kickoff. Be there early
and get in the stadium. Get behind these guys Ukon
now trying to win a couple games in a row
here and get the four and two as we get
to the break in the football season and the bybe
week well coach. The FIU team comes in off a
(00:24):
win over FAU. They had won thirty eight to twenty
eight win. That's a good win for them. They ran
the ball for two hundred and twenty four yards in
that game. Is that something that gets your attention right away?
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Right away? It gets it right away, you know. And
it's not only their great running back. I'm not going
to pronounce his name, but I know his number and
I know he's a damn good player. But it's also
their quarterbacks ability to make plays in the open field.
So yeah, that gets your attention immediately. You know, teams
running the ball, playing keep away some of them. We've
got to be able to We've got to be able
(00:55):
to stop. We've got to be able to get him
in the third and passing situation. So at least we
you know, we can make him maybe a little bit
more predictable than if they're in third and four, third
and five, third and six all the time.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Keewan Jenkins is the quarterback. He wears number one. He's
left handed.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
We're going to get that.
Speaker 1 (01:11):
We're going to get that in a second. But they
throw for one hundred and seventy five a game, which
is not a huge number, but the fact that he
can run with the football and he can throw it
that is a problem.
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah. I mean, anytime you've got a dual threat quarterback,
it puts additional stress on your defense. And you know,
his runs, he's a good runner. Just if they have
design runs, he can do that. But what's really impressive
is when he drops back to pass and nothing's there
and he's able to slip out from the pass rush
and get into the open field, and his speed and
his elusiveness is what's really impressive. You made some really
(01:43):
good plays, big plays with his legs and passing situations.
Now he's also been able to run it, you know,
on design runs or quarterback keeps or options or zone
reads and things like that. So you know we played
against him, so we know this kid. And it was
two years ago and he was young and he impressive then.
And now he's a guy. This guy a couple of
years under his belt and he's more mature and more physical,
(02:05):
big or stronger, faster, has experienced. So he's a heck
of a challenge. He's a damn good player.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
They're a team that takes chances. They're on fourth down,
they've gone thirteen times and they've made it eight times,
so sixty one percent there. That's that gets my attention.
And defensively in the red zone against the opposition, they've
held the opposition out of the end zone let's say
eleven out of eighteen times, So that's pretty good number
(02:33):
right there.
Speaker 2 (02:34):
Yeah. I think they're sixteenth in the country in red
zone defense, and that is an important statistic obviously. And
you know, field goals are one thing, but stopping touchdowns
is huge and they're really good at it.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
So if you look at their ability on fourth down,
is when you're preparing for a team like that, are
you just expecting they're going to go on fourth down?
You're not even thinking I'm sending that punt return unit
in No, we you got to wait and see what
they're doing. And because they love to go on fourth down.
Speaker 2 (03:02):
Well, it even affects third down. Mike. That's what's interesting
is that, depending on field position, you might have a
third and seven and you think it's an automatic kind
of pass down. But knowing that they're a team that'll
go for it on fourth down, if they get it
to like fourth and two, you know, maybe it's not
an automatic pass down, you know, and so you kind
of have to play third down a little bit differently.
(03:22):
You have to sequence it, you have to say, well,
for them in this situation, third down is not a
get get them stopped and they're gonna punt or kick
a field goal. It's get them stopped. But if it's
third or fourth and two, fourth and one, even fourth
and three, depending on field position, they may go for it.
So it demands kind of a different philosophy of defense
on those third down plays that gets you to the
(03:46):
fourth down situation.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Just about a minute or so left with Jim Moore
here in this segment, I wanted to mention their secondary Jim,
and I know you appreciate defense. They got four guys
back there that have interceptions and they're this guy Josiah
mcgrew's got an interception. He's a freshman. Shamir Sterling, he's
a red shirt freshman, a guy named mister Clark, number
(04:09):
twenty seven. He's got four breakups and an interception. He's
only a red shirt sophomore. I mean they got some
young guys who know how to play football back there.
Speaker 2 (04:17):
Oh yeah, and they played tighte man coverage and they
play with a lot of confidence and their coaches have
a lot of confidence in them. And then you know,
you didn't mention one guy that I'm gonna mention because
I know his family very very well. Brian Blades. Yeah,
oh yeah, you remember Benny Blades. Oh yeah, and the
whole Blades family is Brian Blades and Brian Senior. I
(04:38):
mean you talk about football royalty, especially in South Florida,
you say Blades, yepeople respect it. So yeah, I mean
in that kid, he can ball, he can play. So
it's a hell of a secondary And like I said,
they play a lot of tight man coverage, so we're
gonna have to figure out ways to try to beat man.
Speaker 1 (04:58):
Yeah, it's gonna be fun to watch, I'll tell you that.
Yukon FIU getting after it on Saturday, three thirties to kick.
But let's get in there early, get off the barbecue
and get in and wash up. Just take on the Panthers.

who kicked the game winner last weekend at Buffalo, as
we continue on the Yukon Football Coaches Show here on
