Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show on the
Yukon Sports Network.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
I'm Mike chrispino Jima with us every Tuesday.
Speaker 1 (00:07):
We spend an hour. We meet some of the players,
get to know where they're coming from. And uh, you know,
we're going to talk to Melo Brown here in a
few moments, coach. Uh, he came from a small school too.
I've been impressed with what your recruiting department and your
staff has done with finding guys that are you know,
not big ten transfers or other you know, power for
(00:29):
conference transfers. You got You've got a lot of them, right,
and that's not always going to be easy because you're
trying to project a guy up a level. Right Can
he do it here at Yukon? What he did at
Gardner Webb?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
You know, kind of goes back what we're talking about
earlier about kind of the profile, you know, you know,
high weight, speed, the measurables, and then what you see
on film and and you know, fortunately you can find
enough film when you're watching just about any player in
the country of them playing against good competition, so you
can get a feel for who they are as a player.
Speaker 4 (01:04):
Pretty quickly. We're not afraid.
Speaker 3 (01:06):
You know, listen, there's a lot of guys that are
at smaller schools that are just damn good football players
that haven't been recognized yet, or maybe they developed a
little bit later in the recruiting process so they were
forced to go to a smaller school. You know, you
go to smaller school and you're pretty damn well coached,
because those smaller school coaches, in my opinion, are outstanding
football coaches. So fundamentally your sound. You understand what it
(01:30):
takes in terms of work, ethic and all the other intangibles.
And so we're not afraid to go get guys like
you said, like Devin Pringle or Mel Brown, you know,
if they fit our profile, and those guys do, and
you know, Mel's kind of like Devin. They don't say
a lot, they just work. They came highly recommended. You know,
maybe people overlooked them, maybe they developed a little bit later,
(01:52):
but for whatever reason, you know, they're here now and
they're being productive for us. And we've just got to
cantinue to look high and low, and near and far
and under every rock for any.
Speaker 4 (02:04):
Player that can come in here and help us as
a program.
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Yeah, another guy that was impressive. I thought number twenty
four MJ. Flowers. He's a junior running back six one,
two twenty. That's a load right there. Two twenty came
out of Eastern Illinois. He's a Cincinnati kid, obviously football country.
Speaker 2 (02:22):
I really liked what I saw from him.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
I've liked everything I've seen him since day one. Number one,
he's a great kid. I mean, he's top notch. He's humble,
he's serious, he has intensity, high character. At number two,
he's a big, powerful runner with speed. He's really starting
to learn our scheme.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Well.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
I thought he played well on Saturday. You're going to
see more and more of him. He's a he's a
good player.
Speaker 1 (02:48):
And one other thing about you developing players too. Obviously
you got to fill a roster with talent. You got
to coach him up. You got to do everything to win.
You guys are doing that. The kid from ave On
Old Farms, Jackson Harper five catches, had a nice punt
return twenty yarder.
Speaker 2 (03:07):
You know he didn't play much last year.
Speaker 1 (03:08):
A little special team's action A little bit by a
little bit, kind of worked himself into the rotation. That's
got to be gratifying for the coaching staff to see
that kind of development as well.
Speaker 3 (03:20):
Yeah, and it's such a credit to Jackson. You know,
he's a really hard working kid. He's very serious, he's conscientious.
It's important to him. His teammates trust him. We have
a lot of faith in him now as a punt returner.
We don't have any problem putting him in on offense
and letting him go because he's going to make plays,
He's going to do the right thing.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
He's shown toughness.
Speaker 3 (03:40):
It's always fun to see players that you recruited that
have stuck it out and not transferred turned into really
good players. You know, you think about Victor, and you
think about Cam and you just mentioned Jackson, and there's
many many others that you know came in here young,
they're from this state, and they've developed themselves into really
good football players. I think that serves us well when
(04:01):
we recruit, and I think that it serves us well
when we go out and play on Saturdays.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
We got about a minute left, coach, we have to
mention Skyler Bell. I mean, this guy one hundred and
thirty five yards and catches a career high touchdown. Two
of them in the end zone. That catch he made
man on the out on the sideline one handed, was like,
I don't know what you call that world class or something,
but when he does stuff like that, that's got to
(04:28):
really get the sidelines juiced up.
Speaker 4 (04:31):
Everyone's excited to watch Skyler play.
Speaker 3 (04:34):
You know, when he caught that little bubble on his
eighty one yard touchdown or however far that he ran.
You know, we all knew that if he made one
guy miss that he was gone. And he made one
guy miss and he was gone. The most impressive play
to me of the whole game for Skyler was the
very first play of the game when he freaking went
in there and dug out a dB on a block.
Speaker 4 (04:56):
Yeah, no one will see it.
Speaker 3 (04:58):
No one will see it, you know what I mean
as you're watching the ballcarrier. But you put that play
together with the third down catch over the shoulder, and
that shows who Skyler Bell is. He's a dependable, hard nosed, tough, conscientious, caring,
team oriented player. Because the first play of the game,
I can go back and look at he goes and
blasts a guy, and you know you're not gonna get
(05:19):
a lot of receivers that go and sell out the
way he did, and we expect our guys to do it.
And Skyler he didn't put himself against above any of
the dirty work, and that's why he's so ill respected
on this team.
Speaker 2 (05:29):
Yeah, you can't have enough of him, that's for sure.
Guys like him.
Speaker 1 (05:32):
All right, coach, we appreciate it. We're gonna see you
on the weekend against the Qus. The Orange is the
next opponent and you kind of looking to go to
and oh. Thanks to Jim Mora and Ukon Football. We
continue with more of the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Mel Brown,
Devin Pringle coming up next
