Speaker 1 (00:00):
Final segment with Gino Riama here on the Yukon Women's
Basketball Coaches Show. Then one of his junior guards, Ashland Shado,
joined us. She is a big baseball fan, by the way,
big Reds fan. Do you two ever talk baseball at all?

Speaker 2 (00:16):
Not much now, but I will maybe because they're out
of Sarry Francona is the manager there. They're going to
become a little bit of a threat to the Phillies
in the National League. So I got to start getting scouting.

Speaker 1 (00:31):
Import boy, he's done a great job wherever he goes.
He gets blood out of a stone in some places
where you're not supposed to. This was a big week
for Yukon Athletics as Jason Kanda was introduced as the
new head coach of the football team, and he'll take
over when the bowl game's over in a couple of weeks.
David Benedick, though, mentioned that you as the closer being

(00:52):
uh so to speak, I don't know how much credit
you get, but I know you've got a chance to
meet Jason. What's your thoughts on the new football coach
over from Toledo?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
Yeah, I don't know, uh you know, but what that
means you know.

Speaker 1 (01:13):
It means you had a good cover, right.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
Wasn't That wasn't exactly Marianna Rivera, you know, going in
there and throwing the last the last half of the
of the inning of the game. Just a really really straightforward,
down the earth, no nonsense kind of guy. I really believe.

(01:40):
And uh the development of players, uh, getting you know,
getting good high school players to come and coaching them up.
And they've always been the other dog outside the league.
You know it be Mississippi State.

Speaker 3 (02:01):
They be paid.

Speaker 2 (02:03):
So when you have and when you have a coach
that's in a tough league, you know, those schools are
all pretty much evenly balanced, you know, and they all
have terrific coaching.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
Uh, and.

Speaker 2 (02:19):
They uh, they compete against the power schools and beat them.
So he he knows how to win big games. He
only knows winning They in the bowl game every year
that he's been there. And I I like his you know,

(02:45):
I like his demeanor. No, you can tell you that, uh,
he's got a burning deep down inside. I mean it
doesn't show it all the time. Just looks like he's
you know, he's got that competitive fire. So I'm anxious
to see now see how his team responsed to him.

Speaker 1 (03:08):
Yeah, it'll be a lot of fun, that's for sure.
Before we go, we had a couple of minutes left.
Just an update if you would. Caroline de charm and
Yanna Patterson. These are two young ladies that have battled
through a whole lot in their careers, finally healthy, finally
getting a chance to play. What if you liked about
their play so far, the chances that they've had a

(03:29):
chance to go out and compete against other programs, I
think that, you.

Speaker 2 (03:36):
Know, obviously, for different reasons, they've they've asked a huge
chunk of their careers. Uh, you know, Carol, and coming
from uh where she was as as a freshman, everybody
kind of remembers the year Page was out, she was

(03:57):
our best player.

Speaker 3 (03:58):
Yeah, for for the whole time Pages out and and
then to just have it go away, it's taken.

Speaker 2 (04:08):
It's taken obviously a toll, and she's not one hundred
percent the player that she was, But that doesn't mean
that I would hesitate to put her in and any situation,
and I think she'll get it back little by little.
It's different. Practicing getting into a game is a little

(04:31):
bit different. And Yanna has played so little basketball. You know,
she she had her freshman year here and that's it.
So you know what you're always going to get. You know,
Yanna's going to go in there and work hard, she's
going to hustle, she's going to rebound for you. And

(04:54):
it's finding time for all these guys that you knew
would be an issue going in. But I've been really happy.
You know, they they're great, great teammates, great, great to
be around them and the players, so I'm I'm pretty

(05:15):
comfortable with with how they've how they've played, and and
I I can only hope they just keep getting better.

Speaker 1 (05:23):
Yeah, we've got about a minute left. When we go
to USC. Normally you try to get an extra team,
an extra game out there because you know you're going
coast to coast, but we're going a day early playing
the game coming back here. Is that just to kind
of get acclimated with the West coast or is there
a little more activity out there, like say on Friday
ahead of the game.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
That's normally what we would do on any any trip
of a significant distance. You know, you try to you
try to get out there and and make it a
try it, try to get activated, making a smooth as
possible transition. But uh, there we have a lot of

(06:10):
fans out there. There's a lot of people coming to
the game that are Yukon fans, Yukon grads, Yukon donors.
Uh so we're looking forward to it. We're gonna meet
a lot of people and we're gonna have a great
time while we're out there and hopefully, you know, win
a basketball game.

Speaker 1 (06:30):
Indeed, Gino, thank you. We'll see on the plane tomorrow.
Thank you as always my friend.

Speaker 2 (06:35):
All right, Bob, thank you.

Speaker 1 (06:36):
All right, that's Gino Oriama. Stay tuned. Ashland Shades next
