Speaker 1 (00:00):
Final segment with coach Orriema here on the Women's Basketball
Coaches Show, is we preview the twenty four twenty five Huskies.
After our game Sunday, you and I both went to Toscano.
I worked, you watched as are a guest with you
were in Mike's office after the game. But you know,
I talked to Mike about that on the Coaches Show
last night with him. You two have quite the bond,

(00:22):
and I was intrigued, and it makes sense some of
the things that both sports do as far as practice
and drills and stuff you can do for the other way.

Speaker 2 (00:32):
The exception is one's ice and ones a hardwood.

Speaker 3 (00:36):
Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's a little it's a little bit
different in the physicality of it.

Speaker 2 (00:46):
Sure about that.

Speaker 3 (00:48):
Yeah, in some games anyway, sometimes our games look like
hockey games. But now I've I've been a big fan,
I know, for a long long time of hockey in general.
But you know, back when Betty Kirtland was coaching here,
you know, the and cav and I have you know,

(01:10):
been close since he got here actually, and we spent
a lot of time together, and.

Speaker 4 (01:17):
I you know, I love you know, the way he
the way he coaches.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
The way he he has very you know, I'm sure
there's a difference in practice, like most coaches, but like
a lot of hockey coaches. You know, he's got a
really really good demeanor at you know, on the bench.
But a lot of their a lot of their schemes,
a lot of what they're doing, you know, is you know,

(01:41):
you think about it's the same number of players, right,
it's five on five, right.

Speaker 1 (01:46):
And.

Speaker 3 (01:48):
You've got you know, three, three attacking players, two defensemen,
but all five can be in the attack.

Speaker 4 (01:56):
You know.

Speaker 3 (01:56):
The wings in the center have to have to get
back and play some defense. The defenseman can be offensive players.

Speaker 2 (02:04):
Uh.

Speaker 3 (02:04):
The way the pup moves is similar to the way
the basketball moves. You know, you don't want it to
stick anywhere. You know, some of the cuts, some of
the cuts are very similar. So I I enjoy listening
to him describe the game. And uh, and I'm getting
a chance to watch the best hockey league in the country.
So it's uh, you know, it's it's it's a lot

(02:26):
of fun. More than anything.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
It was.

Speaker 3 (02:28):
It was great to just get out of our world
and get into their world. And and I love the building,
and I love the energy in that crowd. It's it's
it's just a great environment.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Yeah, it's a lot of fun. Spacing too, I would
think is a big factor in both.

Speaker 4 (02:42):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:43):
Yeah, you know, they're they have a lot of room
and they they have to use it wisely, and they
they have to have the same chemistry that you have
as a basketball coach. As a basketball team, you know,
people work together. I do remember back in the day,

(03:04):
someone asked me my vision of a great basketball, perfect basketball,
and I've always said Oilers. You know, the Edmonton Oilers
when Gretzky played, probably had the greatest chemistry of any
five people that I've ever seen, having to you know,
be on a court or be on an ice, you know.

(03:25):
And he's got a couple freshmen, you know, down the
stretch the other night, you know, and overtime when they
killed that penalty, you know, when the six on four,
you know, that was huge, right, and they killed that one,
and then they's got the shorthanded goal, which is amazing,
and then they killed another one where it was you know,
four on three, and I don't know that time, Yeah,

(03:46):
I don't know that people can truly understand how hard
that is to do. When you're shorthanded and one shorthanded
goal and two short handed and play defense. And to
have a couple of freshmen out there. I just, you know,
I every time I go over there, you know, I
see a new kid that I that I want to follow.

(04:07):
And uh, he's got this little dude now, man's number eleven.
He's got this funny last night. Yeah, yeah, yeah, uh yeah,
that guy is exciting man right now. He's only a freshman,
and he he keeps both teams in the game, which
I really like, you know.

Speaker 2 (04:25):
He and Tray Scott.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Tray Scott has not come out of the lineup since
Cat put him in the Sacred Heart game. All right,
you've got bu On Thursday, Melissa Graves played in her
name for Muffa McGrath.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
But I noticed the name Jason Pellham.

Speaker 1 (04:38):
Not only was he a practice player at a walk
on for the guys, he used to be a practice
player for you too.

Speaker 4 (04:44):
Yeah, he's got the whole U kind of experience, right.

Speaker 2 (04:46):
Yeah, it's a good tible to have.

Speaker 4 (04:49):
Guy. We've got them all over the place. You know.

Speaker 3 (04:53):
Uh, Shay's got you know, Shay's got one down down
at Vanderbilt.

Speaker 4 (04:58):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (04:59):
So we're you know, we're looking forward to having bu
come down and I'm sure though, you know, they'll be
excited to playoffs. You know, they'll be Yah, we'll be
at the Xcel hopefully they'll be a big crowd, and
our kids, i'm sure will be a little bit nervous
and and but you know, playing down there, it's big crowd.

(05:24):
You're seventeen, eighteen years old and you've always wanted to
play at Yukon and now there you are, And so
it's gonna be fun watching our kids enjoy themselves out there.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Yeah, and they have a little spin fire Alex Gannaros
who was five of eight from three career over forty
from three. And they're trying to replace a six to
four Patriot League Player of the Year from a year ago.

Speaker 2 (05:46):
So that they were with a young group, so.

Speaker 1 (05:48):
In a sense, I mean, not to the level that
you are, but they're trying to do the same thing.
At be you trying to replace a really good post player.

Speaker 3 (05:56):
Yeah, yeah, that's you know, that's pretty much the life
of college coaches.

Speaker 4 (06:01):
Right.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
You're gonna, uh, you know, you're gonna have some kids
and then all of a sudden you're gonna lose them, transfers, graduation,
you know, whatever you want to whatever you want to say,
but you know, yeah, and and there's a lot of
good teams in the country, and it doesn't matter what
league they're in, it doesn't matter what level they're playing at.

(06:24):
And and this goes to show you that, uh, you
can have a player of the Year in the Patriot
League and then the following year they can be a
starter in a you know, Power five league or something
like that.

Speaker 4 (06:36):
So there's there's a lot of really good players out there.

Speaker 3 (06:38):
And I'm sure it's not it's not going to be uh,
you know, let's call them up and mail in the score,
you know.

Speaker 1 (06:46):
Right before we break and wrap things up with GINO.
Have you had a chance to talk to Nika since
her surgery? And I feel awesome for her non contact play.

Speaker 3 (06:54):
I know, I know it happens so often now, you know,
it's it's uh, it's just sad to see when it does.
But yeah, I talked to her. Matter of fact, does
I was talking to her. The nurse came in to
tell her that time for her to hang up because
they're wheeling her into the upbrading room. And and then

(07:16):
I you know, I got a chance to talk to
her afterwards, and she's got a great spirit about her,
you know, as you would expect.

Speaker 4 (07:22):
You know, she's upbeat, she's uh, she's excited about.

Speaker 3 (07:26):
The you know, the the rehab and and I can't
wait to get back. And she's attacking it the same
way she attacks life, you know, and that's what makes
Nika Nika exactly.

Speaker 2 (07:39):
Gito is always thank you. We'll talk to your Thursday.

Speaker 4 (07:41):
Night, all right, Bob, very much.

Speaker 2 (07:43):
Yep, you bet you. That wraps up Gito's segment.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
