Speaker 1 (00:00):
Powered back with Dan Hurley. We're live in our studios
here in the Duncan Music Lounge in Hartford. iHeart Headquarters.
Husky's back to back champions. By the way, your NCAA record,
I was fourteen and four pretty good, pretty good, twelve
in a row. Yeah, I mean didn't start like you wanted.
Speaker 2 (00:17):
But no, no, the bubble game, no, I'll still you know,
we were I take responsibility for that one, but that
was a different type of situation.
Speaker 1 (00:27):
I'm on Wayne Norman and I had to sit right
here are you in the bubble right? Yeah, we were stuck.
We had to watch you on, like what is going
on here? This is an NCAA tournament game and we
are sitting here in the studio.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
That was a bad setup. I wish I would have
when we lost that semi final game to Creighton and
RJ got the concussion, and you know, and then James cramped.
James book Knight had cramps the night before, so he
was useless Scrayton in the semis and then we lost,
and then they made us. They threatened us that if
we left the hotel for like right the next couple
(01:00):
of days, that because we wanted to take the players home,
let them sleep in their own bed, let them you know,
get a little bit. But we went right to the bubble.
We went from bubble to bubble and tom some people
responded better in a situation. Some people ate bubbles. Plus
we couldn't shoot.
Speaker 1 (01:20):
Well, yeah, that was a turning point your coaching career.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
I think now we played so much now that game. No, Well, yeah,
because the next year we were tactically better that that
year that you're talking about when we lost to Maryland,
our tactics weren't great and the roster construction, we didn't
have enough shooting, enough passing, enough, you know, people that
could think the game. So then that next year we
(01:45):
started running better stuff, but we hadn't made the roster adjustments.
We didn't make the roster adjustments until a bunch of
the players left that one year and everyone was losing
their mind, and we knew that there was going to
be a lot of players leave to the one that
probably surprised us, Corey Floyd. The rest of them, we
probably we knew we were gonna have a chance to
get a lot more shooting, passing, get a couple of
(02:08):
vets to support the young.
Speaker 1 (02:10):
Guys, roster retention in the nil era is is that's
a challenge, right, I mean, I thought it was impressive that,
you know, Jalen Stewart didn't go anywhere, solo ball didn't
go anywhere, Jane Ross didn't go anywhere, and all three
of a freshman you know, I had little glimpses during
the season, but they didn't play that much. They could
have said I'm out of here. They could have you know,
where's the exit, but they didn't do that. Why do
(02:30):
you think that is well?
Speaker 2 (02:31):
Because, I mean I think freshman year for us could
be tough. You know, unless you're exceptional, it's going to
be really really hard to start for us. But that
but you can do it. We've had freshmen start for
us and then we've had freshmen give us a lot
of you know, just good minutes as freshmen, and then
you try to predict sophomore year they're gonna have a
(02:52):
big jump, you know, like Jordan Hawkins. You know he
had that even though you know he didn't finish the
year and he was up and down as a freshman.
He had that eighteen point game against Auburn in the
Bahamas where people are like, whoa this guy could be
a monster someday. And Solo did that for us last
year VSUS Carolina the Garden. You know, Jalen Stewart did
(03:12):
it for us in the Biggiest Tournament. He helped us
win it, and he played really well there, and so
he had his moments and then I think we you know,
we're going to get Obviously Jayden Ross were high on
j Ross is like he's like a rocket ship right now.
Speaker 1 (03:25):
He did he get a haircut. He had the craziest hair.
Speaker 2 (03:27):
Like, Yeah, I mean we've been, I've been. I've been
common with Kamani. I don't think it that his hair
makes him look like the toughest.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
So it's an image thing. What's that it's an image
thing with.
Speaker 2 (03:40):
I don't know. I mean, listen, he's exactly what we
need right now. He's like six seven, He's like flying
around the court. You know, he's shooting threes, he's trying
to get every offensive rebound, he's attacking the rim, he's
just trying to play defense, disrupting. I mean, he's a
you know, he looks really good right now. So I
mean we're high on what he's doing.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Yeah, So low ball last year started ten games because
Steph Castle was injured, and he did a nice job,
he really did. You mentioned the game he had I
think in the Garden. Yeah, I guess against North Carolina.
We saw him in Mohegan. He looks like he might
be ready to take the next step. Is that Is
that accurate?
Speaker 2 (04:17):
We have a lot of bets on that. I mean,
we're betting heavy. He could do it. You know, we're
banking it. He could do it. And you know we
saw a lot of it in practice. You saw a
couple of it and some big games, Like I said,
Carolina game, he played well at the Garden beginning a
big East play. You know it just our first seven
(04:38):
last year was so hard to crack that lineup, and
as a freshman with that type of team, and and
but he had some big games for us. Like he's
shooting is reel, his scoring is real. He's clueless on defense,
like like bad awareness. But I think it's gonna get better.
It's just gonna it's gonna hurt us at times, but
(04:58):
then he's gonna play his way of it. But I mean,
I wouldn't be surprised if he was getting thirteen a
game or more and shooting pretty good.
Speaker 1 (05:08):
Which coach is in charge of solo balls, defensive development?
Is there?
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Why yell at all those guys? I mean, Luke recruited him,
so I'll yell at him, and you're blaming Kamani coaches
him and Luke recruited him.
Speaker 1 (05:22):
We got a question out there. What we got is
Ken with a question for coach.
Speaker 2 (05:26):
Coach you talked about the Big East being tough. Other
than you kN who do you see as the top
Big East teams coming into the season besides everyone? Yeah,
I think I heard some other. I don't spend a
whole lot of time thinking about it now. I'm thinking
about it because it's about to start. But I think
I think the bottom of the league is going to
be much better. I think like Haltman and ed are
(05:48):
gonna raise those levels considerably, and and Butler too with
that mode. I mean, these guys are so they're some
of the best coaches, and I mean I think Xavier
is a dark horse obviously with uh but they got
people have to stay healthy for them that you know,
they they've had horrible health luck. Creighton Marquette, Saint John's
(06:10):
has got like a really old roster, good roster.
Speaker 1 (06:15):
All right, Dan Hurley was quick break time out. We'd
come back for the final segment live in our Duncan
Music lounge here in iHeart Headquarters in Hartford. I'm lear Field.
