Speaker 1 (00:00):
Final segment with Maggie Veoni from ct Insider dot Com.
Huskies will take on De Paul and their conference home
opener Sunday twelve thirty on the radio. Blue Demons are
playing Marquette tonight. It's certainly not the same The Paul
team that we've seen in the past, but we'll worry
about that on Sunday. Blaca kenonez. She is fun to
(00:21):
watch and I cannot wait to see what she does
over the next three years. Once Gino reels her in
a little bit, just a little bit, because he likes that,
you know, take your chance type thing, and she's certainly confident.
But boy, she's another special one.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
Well yeah, I think she has been such a fun
surprise for the tuconk team. Right she came into stores
and some people kind of you about her, some people didn't.
There was a lot of highlights of her from playing
overseas in Italy. But the way she has just jumped in,
like she doesn't look like a freshman, right, Like she
looks like she knows her basketball queue is really high.
You can see that the moves he's making, the moves
(00:59):
she's trying to be are very like veteran moves, but
like you said, I think once she kind of gets
settled a little bit more feels the rhythm of the game,
should be able to tone back, tone back those turnovers
and those styles. But she looks incredible and I think
that's gonna be a huge off the bench boost for them.
Speaker 1 (01:16):
Yeah, and you mentioned ali Isabelle the confidence she's in
better shape too. Who's been the most pleasant surprise of
anybody on this team so far?
Speaker 3 (01:24):
That's contributed.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
Yeah, I mean, as I could pick one player, I
think Blanco obviously was a great surprise. Alie has been
really fun to watch her to step into that role
of hey, I can jump in when you need me,
and I can hit shots when you need.
Speaker 3 (01:39):
And I think also kk Kay's leadership.
Speaker 2 (01:41):
To me has been very, very fun to watch her
stepping into that role of now the point guard. Right.
You know, we've seen her be a point guard, we're
going to be a backup point guard.
Speaker 3 (01:50):
But now she's the point guard, and you see her.
Speaker 2 (01:51):
Leading more, you see her directing, you see her calling plays,
calling huddles. I think her just poise on the court
has really shifted too. Now she is relaxed and in control.
Not that she was never not in control, but I
feel like now stepping into the leadership spot, you see
her a little bit more taking a breath and fighting
her pace instead of forcing things to happen.
Speaker 1 (02:12):
Yeah. Kk, I think at least as of Sunday or
Tuesday was fifth nationally and assistant turnover and number one
is you know her teammate has it all? Okay, Sunday
it's the Paul. Then you get some testers, go to
USC Marquette ope for the conference season, and I think
I was going to push him at Barkley Center. Those
(02:33):
are three good games. I think we're gonna find out
a little more about this basketball team.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Absolutely, and I think those are the only three tests
until we really get to Notre Dame in Tennessee down
in January February. I have what looks really good. I
think USC does look is getting not off credit for
what they are. Yes, they don't have Juju, but they've
had six months to plan with what they'll look.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Like without Juju. Right, they know who they need to
step up, they need who need they know who needs
to do what.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
I think that they surely hit some bumps so far
this year, but I think they look very good and
I think that game isn't gonna go as people think
it's gonna go in terms of just the fight and
competition they're gonna bring. You know, it's in La right,
they have the home crowd there. It'll be a really
big game. So I'm very excited to see how that
plays out.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
Yeah, they hit some free throws. They should have beaten
Notre Dame in South Bend. They had a tough day
at the free throw line. Uh is Marquette the second
best team in the Big East in your mind? Or
is Villanova?
Speaker 3 (03:29):
I mean I might being towards Marquette. You know, they
brought back everybody. Did you see that?
Speaker 2 (03:35):
They It was a single piece, which is just like
unheard of in this era. So I think that's really
gonna help them in terms of their chemistry, in terms
of just you know, they don't have to restart, right,
they already are at this level.
Speaker 3 (03:46):
They already were.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
Challenging newkn a lot last year. So I think they'll
probably be number two. Creating unfortunately lost a lot of
pieces just graduation, They lost their whole core. So I'm
curious to see how they'll look. But I think Villanova
will be right behind Marquette in terms of challenging you
call on in terms of really being that maybe number three,
number four spot.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yeah, what about nationally they say hell Is Shoes number
one in the net rankings. They haven't played anybody. I
understand they're scoring the basketball, they haven't played anybody.
Speaker 2 (04:15):
Yet, right, I mean to me, I don't know how
much net rankings really.
Speaker 1 (04:22):
Matter until, yeah, especially on the December.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
Exactly exactly when you really have not some teams have
really not played anybody worth your time. So I yeah,
they'll shake its about how it needs to shake itself out.
Speaker 1 (04:38):
Where did you have Duke at the beginning of the year.
It seems like they have been the biggest disappointment of anybody.
I mean, they went to South Florida and they got
smacked by the goals, the same team that you kind
of just smacked around on two.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Yeah. I was honestly surprised at how high they were
ranked to begin of the year. I don't think I
did not have them that high. I think I have
the double check. I think I have them like in
the mid teens, maybe be like fourteen, but I did
not have them in the top ten.
Speaker 3 (05:05):
So I was so surprised that they made it in there.
Speaker 2 (05:08):
I don't know, you know, I think they've really fallen.
NC State has fallen, right, you know, they were out
of the pool. They had a good win or not sorry,
not a good one, a good loss yesterday against Oklahoma.
But there's been some teams I think that had a
lot of hype coming in that maybe quite haven't put
all the pieces together just yet, and maybe I don't know,
maybe they'll come back.
Speaker 3 (05:29):
They'll look a lot better come March.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
You know, March is totally a season away from where
it is now, but there's I think the consistent top
six seven are like the top will be the top
leaders throughout the season.
Speaker 1 (05:41):
Yeah, Duke gets LSU tonight, by the way at home. Finally,
interesting take from Gino on a zoom pall last week
about the possibility of not going to MTES anymore unless
maybe you go to Vegas. That Vegas event. I mean,
it's lucrative, but it changes the whole landscape of both
men's and women's events around Thanksgiving, right, I.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Would imagine they go back to some you know, I
think Yukon and Gino really liked that, you know, Thanksgiving
window of doing something that week. I know next year,
they've already committed to play in South Carolina. I'm ohegan
Thanksgiving a week, but who knows, maybe they'll find somewhere
warm to go, you know, early November, early December. Selfishly,
I would really like that, but I think it's a
(06:26):
fun way to get more to see more competitive teams early,
you know, Yukon. That's something that they always try to
do with their non conference schedule, is schedule really good
teams early and then kind of that way, it sets
them up not only for a Biggies but more supportently
for March, and so I feel like I wouldn't be
surprised if they go back. I think Vegas would be
really fun, but I also think Vegas is a lot
(06:48):
like you said, it's a totally different environment. It's a
different kind of tournament. So I feel like that, I
don't know, I don't know. I feel like it'd be
interesting to see them compete in that.
Speaker 1 (06:57):
Nothing will ever tap the Cayman, so nothing, that's right.
I had two very nice ladies for Thanksgiving dinner. One
was named Debbie, the other one was named Maggie.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
It was a wonder time. One of my favorite thanks
Gies was fun.
Speaker 1 (07:09):
Maggie, thank you for a few minutes.
Speaker 3 (07:11):
We'll see you Sunday, see you Sunday. Thank you for
having me on.
Speaker 1 (07:14):
