Speaker 1 (00:00):
Want this year right.
Speaker 2 (00:02):
Obviously program best and what we did last year and
achieving the NCAA Tournament and getting our.
Speaker 1 (00:09):
First win there.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
But at the end of the day, that's in the
rear view now and we have a different group this year.
Fortunately a lot of the guys are returning, but there's
still gonna be a different pieces that we want to
like imply and rope in these newer guys into our culture.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
And like what we believe in and what's.
Speaker 2 (00:30):
Gonna end up giving us success down the road. So
kind of just focusing on creating that brotherhood again in
that room and just building pieces off of last year, not.
Speaker 1 (00:41):
Really focusing too much on.
Speaker 2 (00:43):
The results we had last year, but just what's ahead
of us and what's to come.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
Ryan.
Speaker 4 (00:48):
A lot was that.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
Said last year about some John Spetz and what they
did in the summer to kind of establish a new culture,
new standard succession that they.
Speaker 6 (00:57):
Wanted to pass on after they what have you guys
been able to do?
Speaker 5 (01:02):
How have you gone about kind of cow newity would
keep it a going?
Speaker 7 (01:07):
Yeah, I mean I think some of that might have
to stay in the locker room. I mean, it's a
lot of it's internal things that we work on to
establish a culture of like Taber said, a brotherhood and
a family in there. But you know, Haddie and John said,
a great foundation for us last year. I mean, I
don't know if anyone I don't know if any of
you picked this to be in the tournament last year
and anyone else on any of other reporters. So you know,
(01:31):
we got to build off that. And I think we're
happy with the year. We're happy making the tournament and
making a little bit of history. But you know, moving forward,
that's kind of now the standard, and you know, going forward,
you know it's something that we expect and hope we
can build off.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
Home Joey, after the year you had last year, what
are you looking to do this year?
Speaker 1 (01:50):
Are you looking to improve in any areas? And just
how do you.
Speaker 6 (01:54):
Follow it up?
Speaker 4 (01:55):
Right?
Speaker 1 (01:56):
I mean, I think there's always room for improvement, you know.
Speaker 3 (01:59):
I think there's times where you have to reflect, kind
of be realistic. You know, it's like twenty twenty nine goals.
That's it's a lot of goals in college hockey. You know,
I kinda I can't put too much pressure on myself.
Speaker 1 (02:13):
I try not to, you know, I.
Speaker 3 (02:15):
Think I kind of look at it like this year,
let's try to be a good leader, try to be
a good captain, Let's try to maybe get more assists,
try to make more plays, stuff like that, just you know,
try to round up my game in all areas and
kind of carry that into the pro level for the following,
you know, years to come.
Speaker 6 (02:34):
Table homes lending gone with the new guys holidated fitted so.
Speaker 2 (02:38):
Far, Yeah, not too big of a group, but definitely
a little like good size seven guys coming in.
Speaker 1 (02:46):
They're all great guys.
Speaker 2 (02:47):
It's just been awesome, just kind of bringing it brings
me back a little bit to like whenever I came
in my freshman year and just seeing how everything's like.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Oh wow, you gotta do this, you gotta do that.
You're kind of just in the whirl wind.
Speaker 2 (02:59):
But you know, I think they've done a good job
using their resources and everything that we have here and
especially like leaning on us, just kind of asking and
just absorbing everything. Like they're just being sponges in this
training camp process and during the summer as well. So
they've all been great.
Speaker 1 (03:15):
That's far.
Speaker 4 (03:18):
Kind of in that same vein, But this is the
first year that major junior guys can play college hockeys,
So just specifically with Carlin and Alexander, is there anything
different about them coming in compared to like a typical
freshman moment out of the USHL or the BHL that
you notice.
Speaker 1 (03:35):
Nothing out of the ordinary.
Speaker 2 (03:36):
I just think some of the differences would be, like
they're used to playing such a long season with so
many more games. So I think we've kind of just
tried to like implement how important every day is here
and like how much each game means at the end
of the day. So, I mean, all good personality guys
in there been in an absolute treat just watching them
(03:59):
grow since even the summer.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
I mean it's just they've they've they've been nothing but great.
Speaker 2 (04:05):
So yeah, I have all good kids, and I'm just
excited to see them perform for.
Speaker 3 (04:10):
All of you.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
The top ten preseason goal, the standards you set last year.
You hear pocket teams talk a lot about getting teams
best when you said bad standards.
Speaker 1 (04:19):
That's something you guys.
Speaker 6 (04:20):
Talked about expecting other teams best to gear up for
you this year.
Speaker 3 (04:26):
Yeah, I mean I think, you know, I think we're
trying to go into every game, which kind of just
the same mindset, right, Like we we have our saying
or it's like respect all, but if you're not, you know,
there's also other teams in our in our conference that
are in the top ten and that have the historic programs,
(04:47):
And it's just to treat every team in our conference,
especially the Hockey East, with respect and and just know
that on any given night, any team could beat you.
And that's just how it works in college hockey. So
I think that we've just been trying to keep a
level ahead of like knowing that we are going to
get the best now that we kind of set that
standard last year. But also we have to remember that
(05:07):
they are still you know, reporters and I guess social
media people out there that stillren't respecting us. You know,
a lot of our fresh like the freshman class, they
weren't even ranked in like the top twenty and a
lot of these polls. So I think that we like
to keep that edge to ourselves and and kind of
you know, always have that fight, like we still have
(05:29):
something to proof, right, How is the.
Speaker 4 (05:34):
Difference coming in after what you've been last year when
from the previous year, the year essentially you guys achieved
the goal that you've had.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
How was the flat difference coming in?
Speaker 7 (05:46):
I think, you know, every year, the vibe is different.
To be honest, I think it's been really good. It's
been really positive. It's been pretty easy to mesh with
the new guys. But I also think there's been a
lot of a lot of intent and everything we do,
and that's something that maybe not differed from previous years,
(06:06):
but I think it's something that I really know this
year is everything we've been doing, from the first day practice,
even from the summer session, it's been very meaningful and
very there's a lot of intent with all our actions.
So maybe that's one difference. Not to say we weren't
had that before, but it's been very noticeable.
Speaker 6 (06:23):
Sure, you watch your interaction with Sky looked at.
Speaker 3 (06:27):
His fee we I mean, whenever I see him, see
him on campus, or I see him, you know, in
the town, I always make sure.
Speaker 1 (06:34):
To stay hi.
Speaker 3 (06:35):
But no, it's definitely just like a cool little thing
to have just you know, familiar face another athlete on
the football team. You know, we don't really get to
interact with them too often, so whenever I get a chance,
I always stay hi. And I know that he played
hockey growing up, and I watched that video of him
watching watching our game against Alaska, so that was that
(06:57):
was pretty funny. I think ever, ever since that video
came out, it was always somewhere we would kind of
say what's up to each other in public and stuff
like that.
Speaker 4 (07:05):
So if you can talk about just does leadership come
naturally for you?
Speaker 2 (07:13):
I feel like in its own ways, I think everybody's
a leader in a different way. But you know, I
just think with us being here and we've kind of
had different experiences elsewhere, maybe a little bit more vocal
than some other guys.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
It's hard for other guys and everybody else to be
super vocal.
Speaker 2 (07:31):
But I think just having that and then like the
trust and the guys in the room having us has
been like beneficial to us being in the seats that
we are in today. So kind of just that aspect
of it. But I think everybody on our team is
a leader. Everybody has their own ways that they step
up and do things differently or however hard they work.
(07:52):
But I think just like maybe we're a little bit
more vocal than some other guys, or maybe some of
the little things that might go like unnoticed that if
you just put the trust and the guys in the
room to have voted us to be where we are.
Speaker 1 (08:05):
So just stuff like that, I think.
Speaker 7 (08:08):
Sorry, I think for me personally to build love what
he said too, like we always are learning, and you know,
like we're named captains of the team and whatnot, but
we all learned from the freshmen. We all learned from
each other. So it's kind of an ongoing process of
growing and developing and becoming a better leader. I mean,
I think about things from the captains I've had my
freshmen and sophomore years, and you know, think about those
(08:31):
things and some good, some bad, and you know you
got to learn and grow from that to you know,
try to be the best leader for your teammates.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
Yeah, I just think that kind of like what Ryan said,
a lot of it's learning and observing. I think last
year I did a lot of observing on you know,
Hudson and John. We're kind of just nitpicking, like what
parts of their leadership I kind of wanted to portray
and what I had the ability to portray out to everybody,
(09:00):
because not everybody could be you know, kind of a
have that psycho mentality like John Spets brought to the
locker room, which was which was awesome, right.
Speaker 1 (09:09):
You know, So I think I bring.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
A lot of kind of what what Hudson had and
just kind of hearing people out, always being a guy
that someone that someone could talk to, you know, kind
of looking at things, uh from everyone's perspective, trying to
hear everyone out, stuff like that. So yeah, kind of
just what Ryan said, It's it's been a learning process
and it's been one of those.
Speaker 1 (09:31):
Things where you kind of pick and choose what what
you have the ability to do and what you can
bring to the table.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
So you've eliminated yourself.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
So which of YouTube is more of a spetch type
no comment. Part of the reason that you.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Guys had so in success last year was the development
of high and trade at the Blee line.
Speaker 2 (09:51):
What are you holding.
Speaker 4 (09:52):
From that and those two particularly what kind of jump
have they taken?
Speaker 2 (09:55):
And you're when you watch them in practice from from
last year, right? I mean, I think just any year
that you get under your belt is always going to
be a learning curve and they were awesome for us
last year as long with the other guys in the
decor Viking messineo. But yeah, I just think like those
(10:17):
guys having that year last year, and especially like the
year that we had, there was a lot to see
and a lot to learn from. I think it just
made them even more hungrier coming into this year. Like
there's no certainty in like any spot. I mean even
for like us, You're still gonna have to come in
and training camp.
Speaker 3 (10:31):
And work for it.
Speaker 2 (10:32):
But obviously you've just like been there previously and you
kind of have seen where you were and how much
you want to grow and how you want to perform
going on. So I think just they are a little
bit more hungry this year. And obviously they've had that
confidence and like I said, like everybody's a leader on
our team, so they're also filling that role of like
bringing the new guys under, like Anthony or like FITZI,
(10:56):
who ended up missing out a lot of last year
the whole year last year, So like everybody just leaning
on each other in a little bit.
Speaker 1 (11:02):
And like there's sort of ways.
Speaker 5 (11:03):
After the experience in Allentown going into the off season,
does it coming fun where like, hey, I know there's
more to give for the school could be as an individual,
and how do you get that going.
Speaker 1 (11:15):
Forward to show up guys?
Speaker 2 (11:17):
Yeah, I think especially with the off ice training. Our
trainer Mode does an unbelievable job with us getting us
ready and physically prepared for the draining tasks the tapes,
I mean, play that long into the year and then
coming in like I think it's just like we got
(11:38):
there last year and like it was like we got
our win, but that's not what we wanted, Like we
wanted to be holding that championship at the end of
the day. So I think that just drives a lot
of it naturally. And then coming for the guys that
were there last year, just kind of pushing each other
and bringing it every single day and knowing what it
takes to get there. You guys lost.
Speaker 3 (12:01):
Talent to the brows and Jerry Tyler thinks come in
this year, so far, I think they've they've been awesome.
I mean just between the freshman Sanborn and Hendy.
Speaker 1 (12:17):
I mean, Henney is an unbelievable goalie.
Speaker 3 (12:19):
He was just at the us A World Junior Camp
invite this summer. I mean it's realistically, for any freshman
goalie to come in, it's gonna be a learning step
for them in college hockey. Like, I don't think any
freshman really comes in and just performs.
Speaker 1 (12:38):
It's not it's not a regular thing to do.
Speaker 3 (12:41):
But I think it's good that they have they have
a guy like Tyler to uh, you know, balance ideas
off of and kind of learn from, uh for this year.
Speaker 4 (12:49):
So I mean, what what was your biggest area of
close personally last year?
Speaker 5 (12:54):
And who is the biggest area of growth to you
personally last year?
Speaker 1 (12:59):
And how do you Yeah, I mean, I just think.
Speaker 3 (13:03):
Compared to my freshman year, I think I took a
lot of time to develop my game in a defensive way,
you know, and just kind of learn how to play
a twind foot game because I was playing on the
third fourth line all year my freshman year. So it's
it was definitely something to learn from and reflect.
Speaker 1 (13:21):
On going into my sophomore year.
Speaker 3 (13:24):
And then I think I kind of just tried to
bring all those aspects that I wanted to grow on
and I worked on them, and then they ended up
just playing out and working out for me, just playing
that defensive side and then knowing that the offense will
come and sticking to our systems and everything that the
coaches were kind of you know, portraying out to.
Speaker 1 (13:43):
Us and the systems that they wanted us to follow.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
So yeah, it was kind of just believing in what
they were telling.
Speaker 1 (13:50):
Us and just following the process on that. What's the
chemistry like with you and Jake?
Speaker 4 (13:55):
I mean you had some amazing chemistry last season come
to hard work.
Speaker 6 (13:59):
Does it come down a.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Truly yeah, I mean me and him have you know,
we lived We lived together this year, we lived together
last year. It's something I guess kind of just coming
in like he was probably the first freshman then in
my class that I was I was texting coming into
my freshman year. So it was kind of just something that, uh,
(14:20):
you know, we had some mutual friends coming into it,
and since then we kind of just we're always with
each other, Like we spend every day together. You know,
we cook each other meals, so we joined classes together.
Speaker 1 (14:35):
I mean, it's it's something that starts off the.
Speaker 3 (14:38):
Ice, and I think it's that's basically all it is,
is all just off I stuff that we literally do
everything together, and then it kind of just makes it
get like that much easier on the ice.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
And then you know, obviously there's the extra stuff.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
You know, it's staying after practice and just like feeding
each other one timers or just getting each other passes
and working.
Speaker 1 (14:59):
On stuff together.
Speaker 3 (15:01):
You know, it's just but I would say mainly it's
all the off ie stuff, which I think is played
an important role just for our whole team.
Speaker 1 (15:08):
I think that we really emphasize.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
That as being best friends off the ice and brothers,
and it just makes.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
Going on of the ice and so much easier. And
your system play.
Speaker 6 (15:18):
We'll talk about the defense and the synergy with the
familiarity coming back, especially Ryan and Tabor. How does that
help or play out at the beginning of the year
on things like you break out and having that familiarity
with returning defense.
Speaker 7 (15:34):
Yeah, I think having a lot of returners in general
helps just broke the new guys in right away. Like
our systems may be a little unorthodox at times, I
think coming from juniors, a lot of guys play a
different system. But for us, you know, we play our
own kind of brand, and you know, having, like you said,
a couple older defensemen kind of teaching you guys kind
of what we do and how we operate. We do
(15:56):
a lot of monotonous things where it's you know, maybe
a five on zero breakout show just to really understand
what raps we're gonna get But I think that stuff
really helps. And you know, all those repetitions we take
in practice, we take them seriously and you know, even
when you're on the bench just watching, you're learning from
everyone else. So I would say those are probably two
of the biggest things that help us.
Speaker 4 (16:14):
For one more, guys, I ran just anything that this
team does differently that last year's team than last year's
team on the ice, like already faster, stronger, Do you
hit hard with anything like that.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
Or any of you if you have.
Speaker 1 (16:28):
Anything this year's team for the last years.
Speaker 3 (16:31):
Yeah, I don't know.
Speaker 1 (16:36):
We're hungry, Yeah, hungrier.
Speaker 3 (16:38):
That's a good one. I would say we're a lot hunger,
you know. I think obviously going into last year, we
were a hunger team.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
You know, it seemed to.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
Be like every year polls come out, nobody respected us.
But I think just after last season, we just have
this bad taste in our mouth at you know, it
was just you can't really describe. It just doesn't sit
well after what happened in Allentown.
Speaker 1 (17:09):
So yeah, I think that's just that's a good good
way to put it.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
Get hungry once you've had it tasted exactly awesome.
Speaker 4 (17:17):
Thanks guys, thank you,
