Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hello page.
Speaker 2 (00:01):
Hello, al Right, where'd you get the star? Oh? Shoot,
I can I have that? Okay? Uh, star face, shout out,
star face.
Speaker 1 (00:11):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
Okay, no question, that's on DT. Uh.
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Crazy you kind of like saw it coming in the
near future, but it's kind of surreal. Just like as
long as I've basically been alive, she's always been playing
and just to watch her growing up, playing at Yukon,
playing in w playing in the Olympics, like being the
ultimate winner. It's something I've aspired to be and like
(00:42):
she's a great role model and just a great athlete
for people to look up to and obviously one of
the greats. So it's crazy that she's not gonna be
playing anymore.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
How was she a mentor to you or was she
how did she help you? Yeah? Just always being there,
Like I got her number.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
We talk a lot in the summers. We've seen each
other quite a bit. She just came back here, but
just always being there. I think she's done it all,
seen it all, experienced it all. So just leaning on
her for wisdom, asking questions, and she's just always been
there to support, like through the highs and lows and
the ups and downs of my career here.
Speaker 2 (01:16):
She's just always been there to support.
Speaker 4 (01:18):
What are some of the things that she does that
no one else did on the court. What is anything
that you've even kind of noticed that maybe you've tried
to copy and try to work int your.
Speaker 2 (01:29):
Game or just a she can do.
Speaker 3 (01:32):
Yeah, she's very unique in like terms of her competitive
fire and her swagger and like just her fierceness. I
think that was something that I always looked up to,
and just the way that she didn't shy away from
who she was and she didn't hide it at all
on the court, and it really just actually shown more
when she was playing basketball and she wasn't afraid of
(01:53):
what other people thought if she was to this, to that,
like she was just DC And I think that's always
what's been separating her from everybody else.
Speaker 4 (02:01):
What's the most important or memorable piece of advice maybe
that she's given you?
Speaker 2 (02:05):
Mmm, I don't know. There's been a ton, mostly like.
Speaker 3 (02:14):
We we both gotten a lot of the yell ats
from coach good and bad.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
So it's just like that he always that he loves you.
Speaker 3 (02:24):
And that he's doing it to make you better, and
if he didn't, if he wasn't yelling at you would
probably be more of an issue than if he was.
Speaker 2 (02:31):
And he always gets on his.
Speaker 3 (02:33):
Gets on the players who he sees the most in
the most, So probably that how much of our comfort.
Speaker 5 (02:39):
Is it to be able to have some of the
players of all times you can call them, you can
some of the best players, and they can help you
through all this.
Speaker 3 (02:49):
It's very reassuring to know that they're there whenever you
need them, and it's very selfless of them and just
very humble of them to be able to have that
relationship with us, And so you never want to take
it for granted and think that it's something that they're
obligated to do. So very grateful that there's just one
call away.
Speaker 1 (03:09):
Who are your favorite players and kids? In addition to her,
Is there a group of three or five players that
you really looked up to?
Speaker 3 (03:15):
And as a young player, I think that whole Minnesota
Link's corps obviously Maya Lindsay being from Minnesota as well.
Uh yeah, I think I've just looked up to the
Minnesota Links so much and like growing up and going
to the games at Target Center of the Barn. Chelsea
(03:36):
Gray was always somebody that I really enjoyed watching, so
I'll probably say them, yeah, are you surprised the season?
Speaker 2 (03:45):
That's not surprised.
Speaker 3 (03:48):
You could see it in pre season that she was
gonna have a tremendous season, just the way she plays,
the aggressiveness, the selflessness, the i Q, just everything honestly
that she does on the court. So when you watch
her in practice during the preseason, you're not surprised about
what she's doing this year.
Speaker 1 (04:04):
Speaking of Sarah able to get her the ball, I mean,
she has this probably the softest hands that you could
possibly have to be able to catch the ball. To
reassuring if your pass is not exactly on target, you
know it's still gonna get caught.
Speaker 3 (04:17):
Yeah, you just kind of throw it up there and
you know that Sarah's gonna come down with it. It's
the same like whenever the ball comes off the rim,
I just expect Sarah's it's gonna fall into her hands.
Speaker 2 (04:26):
She's gonna go get it for the rebound.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
But definitely, as a person who looks for her and
is passing a lot, it's reassuring to have her on
the other end of the passes.
Speaker 5 (04:35):
Not that long ago, you were the freshman coming off
the great regular season and then things get real in
the tournament. What do you tell Sarah and Alie about
about the difference of playing a regular season game as
opposed to one and done in your season could be over.
Speaker 2 (04:51):
Just to continue to do what they've been doing.
Speaker 3 (04:54):
Obviously the stakes are a little bit higher, the pressure
might be a little bit more, but to not let
that change the way they've been playing who they are
and just continue to do what you're doing, but rise
another level, have a sensor urgency and leaning on the
upperclassmen for advice and for help, and know that they're
not doing this alone and they got a whole team
with them.
Speaker 2 (05:14):
So yeah, I'd probably say all that you can.
Speaker 3 (05:17):
I have you go back in the archives for this,
since we get to look ahead to see the nine
people point out. Do you remember the first time you
heard of Yukon women's basketball?
Speaker 2 (05:30):
Mm? Nah, I can't remember earliest memory then.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
I just remember Stephanie Dolson was on the team and
they just they had just won the Natty. Like Stephanie
Dason was my favorite player. Just her energy, her charisma
and her passion was something that I really mired.
Speaker 5 (05:50):
His first four day break between games since for Christmas.
Speaker 2 (05:53):
How has that helped you now going to the tomorrow's.
Speaker 3 (05:55):
Game and just knowing the first season is a b
about a week and a half away.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
Yeah, it was crazy.
Speaker 3 (05:59):
I felt like we had missed the game or something
based on the the lack of off days we've been having.
But it just helps you get your body m or
your body right, your mind right, and also like work
on things that practice and we've actually had time to
get better, get more reps and not worry about all
like the game days Tomhow you don't wanna like exhaust
(06:19):
yourself before the game. But again, like Crane's a a
great team and it's a huge game for us on Thursday,
so we've been trying to prepare for that and get
mentally and physically prepared for that.
Speaker 5 (06:30):
We know the obviously the big project that you guys
wanted is a national championship. But how's important is it
to you and your final year here to win the
Big East regular season title?
Speaker 3 (06:39):
Yeah, it's like one championship at a time. Wanna get
the regular season championship?
Speaker 2 (06:45):
Uh s?
Speaker 3 (06:46):
And this is like Crane only has one loss, so
this is really a must win game in order for
us to do that.
Speaker 2 (06:51):
And and not have to share it.
Speaker 3 (06:52):
So the sense of urgency is high and we wanna
continue to get better as the season goes on and
March is approaching, So a very important game.
Speaker 2 (07:01):
Two regular season games, is your last game at Xcel tomorrow.
Are you starting to feel any of.
Speaker 3 (07:06):
The lasts of it all as you kind of get
down the home stretch of the season here, Now that
you just said, I didn't realize my last Excel game, but.
Speaker 2 (07:13):
Yeah, it's all crazy.
Speaker 3 (07:16):
Like last year you sort of I sort of knew
that I was coming back, but this year it definitely
feels different.
Speaker 2 (07:23):
Yeah, No, it's pretty crazy, guys.
Speaker 3 (07:24):
Still I'm really not thinking about it, but it becomes
more real as the.
Speaker 2 (07:29):
Time goes on.
Speaker 1 (07:30):
You've had double figure assistant of the last three games,
and you're starting to really push the pace offensively with
those long stretch passes up the floor. Is that just
something you're seeing or is that something that's become a
point of emphasis?
Speaker 2 (07:42):
Yeah, coach.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Coach is always like, pace doesn't run the floor, so
we don't need to get hurt.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
The outlet and everybody else will run.
Speaker 3 (07:49):
But it's something we've been working on in practice. Continue
to try to push the pace I think it's been
in the past has been more on a miss, but
we're even trying to push it on a make more
recently and make sure that we're trying to score in
the first ten seconds of the shot clock and if not,
then we get set up in our offense and run something.
But transition has really been a huge emphasis, and I
(08:11):
guess I've been starting it a little bit more.
Speaker 5 (08:13):
Page twenty one years ago, Diana was the number one
draft pick. Obviously a position you.
Speaker 2 (08:19):
May be in as well.
Speaker 5 (08:20):
Do you look ahead thinking, you know, you hope to
have a career she has had in the wnba.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Uh that I think I've learned to more stay in
the present, but to aspire to be as successful, to
be as much of a winner as she has, is
always something that you want.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
To set goals for yourself.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
But she had an amazing career, obviously one of the greats,
and so when looking at like the blueprint on how
to do it and.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
The success she's had is toughly something you look at.
Speaker 4 (08:51):
You guys haven't sold out biggest arenas two or three
times in all the road historic crowds may see.
Speaker 2 (08:55):
People in trees and surrounding your breath. I mean what
that like to you when you walk out of the
gym like that, It's very cool.
Speaker 3 (09:02):
It's surreal, Like to see all the support that was
there at Hinkle and wherever we've been out on the road,
it's been really cool.
Speaker 2 (09:11):
I was saying, just like, I don't know, it's like
you feel very blessed.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
And to see how far the women's game has come,
and like to see people wearing your jerseys, to see
people with signs saying how far they've traveled to come
and watch the team.
Speaker 2 (09:28):
And so you're just extremely.
Speaker 3 (09:29):
Grateful, and you feel bad because you can't sign everything,
you can't take pictures with everyone, but you love and
support every single one of them for supporting you.
Speaker 2 (09:38):
So very grateful. And the first time you had, whether
the sports figure or somebody looked up to science mean
for you.
Speaker 3 (09:45):
Yeah, I think it was Lindsay Whalen had signed a
pair of Minnesota Lynk's colored Nike shoes. I think I
probably still have them in stories somewhere, but I think
that was the first.
Speaker 2 (09:58):
They were not my size, a little bit big.
Speaker 5 (10:01):
But earlier in the season when you guys are practicing,
you're around a lot of freshmen, a lot of sophomores.
Now you have you have Easy, you have a Lotbrey,
you have Caroline back. How much does that help things
having players that have been here for a while and
know all all the deals.
Speaker 3 (10:14):
Yeah, it's huge, especially during March and during the tournament time.
You have people who have experience, who've been there before,
and you have the voice to to share their knowledge
and their wisdom and whatever they've gathered throughout the past
couple of years, and so the freshmen have something to
lean on.
Speaker 2 (10:31):
I think it's important how.
Speaker 5 (10:32):
Much I think they appreciate what they've been through to
get to this point. You're younger players, younger teammates. You know,
they've had to fight a lot just to just to
get on the court.
Speaker 2 (10:42):
What's the question, how much you think.
Speaker 5 (10:43):
Your younger teammates really appreciate a Breton in Carolina and
the battle is taken to get to this point.
Speaker 2 (10:48):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (10:49):
I think everybody's seen how much they've been working. They
see their hours in the gym, how much they've invested
into coming back and the good days the bad days.
So they appreciate it. We all appreciate it, and we're
all just extremely happy for them. To be back on
the court and the most important time of the year,
and so I think there's just an overwhelming sense of
like being proud and being happy for them a.
Speaker 5 (11:12):
Few times, being more present where your feet are throughout
the season.
Speaker 2 (11:16):
What's that process.
Speaker 3 (11:17):
Been like for you to kind of really embrace that
and not look too far ahead or look back.
Speaker 2 (11:22):
Or anything like that. Uh.
Speaker 3 (11:23):
Yeah, it's been like everything in life, a learning process
and in a journey in itself. But I think just
emphasizing that to the team. I think staying off of
social media has been a huge thing, and just staying
within this building has helped a lot, and caring about
(11:44):
the voices that actually can make a difference, not paying
attention to other people's opinions who have no effect on
what you are every single day, every single day, and
just trying to get better.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
I think that's been the main emphasis.
Speaker 3 (11:55):
Trying to get better every single day, win the day,
and just keep progressing to so where we want to
get to page.
Speaker 2 (12:01):
What makes a coach so relatable to your generation?
Speaker 3 (12:13):
I mean, he has grandkids, relatable to our generation. He's
trying to be understanding, he doesn't get on TikTok, relatable
to our generation. He tries to be cool, tries to
learn some new slang. Yeah, I remember when he called
Nika his slime. I guess he's just he's trying to
(12:37):
learn as much as we are.
Speaker 5 (12:38):
What were your first impressions of Gina Do you remember
when you first met him.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
I was scared of him. I was timid.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
I was like, didn't want to say the wrong thing,
didn't want like during.
Speaker 2 (12:49):
The recruiting process, like I just wanted.
Speaker 3 (12:51):
To be like I kind of walked on eggshells in
a way where I was nervous to talk to him.
But he's very open, honest, personable, Like he has a
great personality and he cares. He has a great heart,
and yeah, I think honest is the best thing I
can say.
Speaker 2 (13:09):
Do you first or any then?
Speaker 3 (13:13):
Yeah, during the recruiting process, I talked to him on
the phone and then I got up here for a visit.
Speaker 5 (13:19):
How do you answer the phone when Jean I'm gonna
calls you.
Speaker 2 (13:22):
It's a big g.
Speaker 3 (13:26):
Hello, coach, Nice to talk to you. Basically, very formal introduction.
Speaker 2 (13:31):
How did you find out about the news yesterday? Uh?
Speaker 3 (13:35):
DTS knows Ye, Well, we share the same agent, so
I kind of knew it was coming, but didn't find
out till like the day before that.
Speaker 2 (13:43):
The announcement was that day, so I kind of had
a in sad source. I guess, did you talk with
her yet at all? This since everything?
Speaker 3 (13:51):
You know? No, I haven't talked to her since the retirement.
She did text me when I ended up passing her
on the scoring list, but yeah, not since the assignment though.
Speaker 2 (14:02):
Was it a nice text or like a smart ass test?
Speaker 3 (14:04):
No, it was actually nice and just like proud of
you homies that sort of thing, no sarcasm.
Speaker 4 (14:10):
Yeah, would you ever look at her role film just
to see what she was like?
Speaker 2 (14:14):
Or do you just remember watching her mostly?
Speaker 3 (14:18):
I just remember watching her obviously, like some highlights and
some clips will come back and you'll watch those and
just remember all the things you watched, Like in the moment.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
What about your first impression to CD and what she
meant to you while you've been there.
Speaker 3 (14:33):
CD was very bossy, strict, also very caring, has a
big heart, but like she's like a aunt or a
mom in a way where she's like getting on you
if you don't have your jersey tucked in, like you
look sloppy, like sort of like that, but she's just
makes you better in so many ways. It makes you
care about things that you really didn't think were that important.
(14:57):
But what separates you from from other people and from
being good to great? And I think she when like,
the program isn't what it is without CD and she
makes you be a professional in college.
Speaker 2 (15:09):
So I think that's been huge sharing you kind and
an agent.
Speaker 4 (15:12):
Have you talked to Diana through the years just about
how to handle pressure or how to handle being, you know,
someone that everybody's looking at.
Speaker 3 (15:20):
Yeah, definitely had conversations with her throughout the summer, throughout
the season, just reaching out asking how she handles it,
what her experiences have been like, and what has helped
her get through tough times and how great it feels
on the other side.
Speaker 2 (15:38):
Definitely have looked at her for that.
Speaker 3 (15:40):
You and Aubrey have been through a lot together in
five years here, just what does it meant to go
through this last season with her kind of by your
side for it?
Speaker 2 (15:48):
It's been awesome. I mean, I love Aubrey.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
We have a really great relationship, and like you said,
we've been through a lot together. And when you're going
through tough times with somebody with the team. It makes
it so much better because you're sharing that experience. You
get to share the joy of what it like, what
it's like to come back, to be playing basketball again,
and to just enjoy or less year of college together.
(16:11):
And so I mean it means everything to be going
through it with her and we love each other.
Speaker 2 (16:16):
How much? How much is it if Caroline's back and
working out with the guys in any games? Amazing?
Speaker 3 (16:23):
Like, like I've talked about before, like Caroline is such
a great person.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Her presence was still felt on and off the court.
Speaker 3 (16:29):
But just to have that moment of just like this
is Caroline's moment, we all wanted that for her.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
Extremely happy for her. I have seen so much of
what she's been.
Speaker 3 (16:40):
Through, the good days and the bad, and for her
to overcome what she's overcame, it just brings real, real
joy to us.
Speaker 1 (16:48):
What are your thoughts on creating tomorrow? What concerns do
you have?
Speaker 2 (16:53):
Great team?
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Can't space the floor, they got shooters everywhere, can't not
guard anybody, so the game plan has to be precise.
They really make you pay for any small mistake you make.
They're extremely smart, they make great reads, so you really
have to be on top of your game when you're
playing Creighton, and so, I mean, that's been the focus
(17:15):
this past couple of days.
