Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show, Mike Crispino, joined
by one of the d backs. One of the guys
that's behind the big three up front the Huskies, Malachi mclaney.
Where's number seven in your program? Five ten, one eighty five, Houston,
Texas guy who joined the Huskies from New Mexico State
after a couple of years. There your position, Malachi here,

(00:24):
what would you call it? Would you call it more safety?
More linebacker?

Speaker 2 (00:27):
What is it safety? I call it a hybrid if
you ask me.

Speaker 1 (00:33):
And that is because you have responsibilities as much in
the passing game as you do in the running game. Yes, sir,
you are a guy that looks like is someone who
can get into backfield. We've seen that the Husky's been
sacking people all over the place in these first four games.
Let's start the there. If you're going to rush a passer,

(00:54):
what are you thinking? What are you looking at? Are
you looking for cracks and crevices in the offensive line
or are you just looking for a way to go
around people and get to the quarterback?

Speaker 2 (01:04):
MS?

Speaker 3 (01:04):
Moore, So based off the game plan with the call
is so kind of you've used different techniques, whether it's
be the power or either, like you know, surfing.

Speaker 1 (01:16):
And you're a guy. I mean you weigh a bluck
eighty five, not even two hundred. How do you get
after a quarterback when you got to run around? You know,
most of these offensive linemen these days are three hundred pounders.

Speaker 2 (01:27):
Want to I say, heart will, that's all it takes.

Speaker 1 (01:31):
You know, you came back from injury, missed a couple
of weeks. It was a scary moment, and you could
tell us about it from your perspective because it was
a goal line stand a couple of weeks ago. You
took a hit, you went down, and then you had
to leave the game and came back after a couple
of weeks of missing practice, et cetera, et cetera. But
tell me about that, because that's one of those things

(01:54):
where defensive players are taking hits all the time.

Speaker 2 (01:57):
Right.

Speaker 3 (01:58):
Yeah, So, like you said, played with a goal Linestan,
I just kind of took a shot to the Sturnham
area and it just happened how it happened. I mean,
you know, I couldn't do anything but try to get
back as fast as possible, gratefully on back.

Speaker 1 (02:11):
Yeah, Coach More was saying that he knows when the
player is going to give a chance to be back
and playing when he's at practice. Getting back to practice
last week, tell me about it. Was that a good feeling?
Were you back home in some in some way, shape
or form.

Speaker 2 (02:27):
Oh? Yeah, especially after missing two weeks.

Speaker 3 (02:29):
I was eager to get back out there with the guys,
and I was just ready to work and get back
to it.

Speaker 1 (02:35):
Connas two and two, Dad, even after four weeks, a
couple tough losses. You missed them, Syracuse, Dellaware. On the road,
you go on the road this week, what has to
be better or what do you have to do differently
as the road team this week to win at Buffalo
and get get back over five hundred.

Speaker 3 (02:54):
Do you think, Uh, just urgency and everything that we
do as a defense, being more physical, just flying around
how we know he can just raising the bar each
and every week.

Speaker 2 (03:07):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (03:07):
One of the things about this Yukon defense is you
have a lot of depth. You got a lot of guys.
I mean, Donovan Branch, you got all these players, Devin Pringle,
You've got depth in all the positions. How helpful is that?
Because it looks like it gives you guys a little
extra juice in that you've always you're always your energy
is always high because you're always seemingly rested because of

(03:28):
your depth.

Speaker 3 (03:29):
Yeah, it does gives us a lot of help, especially
when those guys coming off the bench and stuff like
that know their jaws and know what to do. He
can allows everybody to play fast and there's no drop
off with those depths, you know, right.

Speaker 1 (03:42):
Uh. Defending the pass, that's another part of your job,
not only plugging holes and you know, the slots to
stop the run, but defending the pass. What's your first
read when you see the quarterback stand up looking like
he's going to pass. Are you dropping into zone stuff?
Are you looking at individual players or does it change

(04:03):
every play?

Speaker 2 (04:05):
That's another question that just goes back to the call.

Speaker 3 (04:07):
Whatever the car is a different techniques, whether it's man,
your eyes should be on the man, whether his own.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Then you can have more quarterback eyes quarterback vision.

Speaker 1 (04:16):
Were you always a defensive player? Back at Manual High School?

Speaker 2 (04:21):
I started out as receiver. My fish minis sophomble year Really, yes, sir,
all right?

Speaker 1 (04:26):
So when the coach said, Malachi, we're putting you on
the other side of the ball. What was the conversation like.

Speaker 3 (04:32):
I'll be ready to go, and be ready to go
because most guys, I mean, I don't know, I played
both sides of the ball.

Speaker 1 (04:40):
This is way back when in ancient history. But I
like both sides of the ball too. I wonder if
you still would say to yourself, you know what, I
can go over there and catch them passes too.

Speaker 2 (04:50):
Nah.

Speaker 3 (04:50):
Yeah, most definitely that never lefts So anytime they needed
I'll I'll be available.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
So you as a defensive guy, a safety, a hybrid
in Matt Brock's defense, and we're getting used to it now.
It is the second year the Husky's had a real
good season last year defensively, what are the keys to
that being effective? Right? Three three five is kind of
You got five guys playing dB, almost their safety and

(05:16):
you got three linebackers and only three down line And
what's the key to that being a successful defense?

Speaker 3 (05:21):
Everybody doing their job, you know, everybody doing it, win
to living every place, training to be the best that
they can be, know how to do it and when
to do it.

Speaker 2 (05:29):
And why this team you face.

Speaker 1 (05:34):
Buffalo this week is a team that's from the MAC
just like ball State was do you think that they're
going to try to run the ball more or pass
the ballmore. Is they may have a question at quarterback
where they have to go to their second quarterback. I'm
curious what they look like so far on tape when
you look at them. Are they more of a running
team or are they going to throw the ball more?

Speaker 3 (05:55):
Right now, we're still looking at them, So we'll probably
figure that out by tomorrow, Tuesday, Wednesday.

Speaker 1 (06:02):
This is a thing that for you con is this
is a big game. I think I'm curious what you
guys think because now you're two and two, You've got
a schedule ahead of you, You've got eight games ahead
of you, and you got some home games coming obviously,
but this one on the road. To win away from home,
what would that prove to you and your team? Do
you think? Uh?

Speaker 2 (06:23):
It was just prood were moving in the right direction.

Speaker 3 (06:26):
Just another week of good hard work and all we
can do is play on the field hard on Saturday.

Speaker 1 (06:32):
I know a lot of people don't get to hear
from the coach that you work with directly. Matt Brock,
the defensive coordinator. I've spent some time talking to him
over the year and a half he's been here. He's
an interesting guy, isn't he. What's your favorite part of
playing for Matt Brock?

Speaker 2 (06:47):
The energy he brings. I love it. It just raises
our energy as a defense.

Speaker 3 (06:52):
So whenever you have a coach like that, it just
makes you want to go play harder for him.

Speaker 1 (06:56):
Yeah. Is he a verbal guy? Is he a yeller
on the sideline? He's so animated Sometimes I think he's
losing it, but he's not, right, he not.

Speaker 2 (07:11):
All right?

Speaker 1 (07:11):
Malachi mcclaim with us. A quick final thing for you.
Your experience here. Now you've been a couple of years
after playing, you know, in another part of the country,
obviously growing up in Texas, playing in New Mexico State,
what's that transition been like? Because we always ask the
guys who come east from places like New Mexico State
or Texas what what their experience has been.

Speaker 2 (07:33):
It's been. It's been a good experience so far. I
love you here.

Speaker 3 (07:37):
Just the biggest thing is just the weather changing, like
that's the that's the most biggest team.

Speaker 2 (07:42):
So other than that, everything's Rowland's moves.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
All right, So you're talking about the weather just like
we do all the time. Yeah, Yeah, here in New England.
All right, well, let's take care of the weather. Let's
take care of Buffalo this weekend. Malachi, we appreciate it.

Speaker 2 (07:56):
Yes, sir, thank you.

Speaker 1 (07:58):
That's Malachi mcclaim. We'll be back with more of the
Yukon Football Coaches Show. Ben Morosky, one of the offensive
linemen who opens up holes for the running backs. I
Cam Edwards is coming up next. You're listening to the
