Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaches Show. We're
joined by Silas Demery Jr. Dan Hurley was with us
early in the show. Silence, we're talking about rebounding. You
kind of got whipped on the boards against Arizona without
Terras Reid available.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Of course that changes some stuff.

Speaker 1 (00:16):
But let's talk about rebounding because you're a guy that
gets in the middle of things in every level and
you certainly are good rebounder from the guard position. Where
did that come from? And you in your career growing up,
when did rebounding become something that you thought you could
do pretty well?

Speaker 3 (00:32):
That was probably early on, like when I first started
playing basketball, because I remember when I first started playing,
I wasn't always a point guard, you know.

Speaker 4 (00:39):
I was just like the guy that just got rebounds.

Speaker 3 (00:42):
Like I remember, I think in probably like third grade,
there was a game where I had like maybe two points,
but I had like twenty rebounds. So always backing the
ball has been like a skill of mine.

Speaker 1 (00:51):
So yeah, that's something well listen, rebounding, And again we
were talking to Dan about this. Rebounding is kind of
a gang thing, right, It's a group thing. You gotta
have five guys involved with it, So talk about that.
Tracking the ball from the from the backcourt position, it's
a little different, isn't it. You have to read the angle,
You have to kind of get a feel for where

(01:12):
the ball might come.

Speaker 3 (01:13):
Yeah, it definitely can be pretty difficult because you know,
obviously the big guys in there already, so you kind
of have more of a chance to get those longer rebounds.
You just got to see how the shot is going
towards the room and then try to position yourself in
a way to just to be around it. You know, those
longer rebounds. You don't want to run in and be
under the basket and then miss the ball. So you
just got to read where the ball is coming off
the room.

Speaker 1 (01:35):
Playing with let's talk about you and something a couple
of the centers. First of all, a terrorist Reid of
course against BYU in a big game. How important is
that guy to this team because you know we've missed
him a couple of games now, and you obviously your
a teammate of is what what do you how do
you feel the terrorist's real contributions are here as.

Speaker 2 (01:55):
We go forward.

Speaker 3 (01:57):
I think he's a big contributor to what we're trying
to do. I think his voice and his presence and
just the way he impacts the game on both sides
of the ball is you can't kind of mimic it.
You know, he's a guy that's always going to talk,
He's guy that's gonna lead, and you know he encourages everybody.

Speaker 4 (02:12):
He brings a great spirit every day.

Speaker 2 (02:14):
Yeah, that's important, no question about it.

Speaker 1 (02:16):
And by the way he can rebound the wall, I
think he's averaging ten of game definitely again and having
the option to throw it down to him, that's got
to be a pretty good feeling for a point guard.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
Yeah, man, I have a good fel I know that
every time if I can get the ball to terrace,
I have like a great confident percentage in him making
it every time, Like just from practicing with him and
being around him, just seeing him work on his game.
You know, he's very intentional with every little thing he does,
so I know I have utmost confidence when he gets
the wall, he's going to score.

Speaker 1 (02:45):
You had Eric Raba with you on the Sunday game
against Brian and he's getting He's been impressive of these
last couple of games. Eric with fifteen against Arizona, then
he gets sixteen against Bryan in nineteen minutes. What's your
thought on him, because he he's a young dude. He's
still a teenager, I think, and yet he seems like
he's figuring out some stuff. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (03:05):
I mean the coaches are hard on him every day. Man.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
I think he's taking the coaching and he's getting better.
And I think that everybody's starting to see it. Like
game by game, he's getting better and better. He's getting
more confident, he's starting to believe in himself, and he's
starting to come out of hisself. I think the more
and more he does that, the more and more his
game will be able to take off. And I think
this guy's limit for e When he.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
Knocked on a couple threes the other night against Arizona,
that was kind of cool because I've seen him.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
In practice he can shoot it.

Speaker 1 (03:31):
What about you, guys, are you Are you confident with
him if he's got a shot from distance?

Speaker 4 (03:35):
Yeah, man, we're confident.

Speaker 1 (03:36):
Man.

Speaker 3 (03:36):
I see eating the gym every day, man, before practice,
after practice, so I see him putting in the work
and wanting to hit those shots. And I'm just glad
he was able to showcase that in that big of
a game, and he wasn't afraid to step into the
moment and shoot those open shots.

Speaker 2 (03:51):
Yeah, that's that's big.

Speaker 1 (03:52):
You gotta have confidence playing in the back court. And
it's happened a few times now with you and Malachi
Smith together, two guys who are at different schools.

Speaker 2 (04:00):
Last year.

Speaker 1 (04:01):
How close are you to becoming really, you know, in
sync with him. Do you think you've had five games,
six games, whatever it is, and you had your you know,
summer practices. It takes a while to get to use used.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
To another guy like him, Yeah, definitely does.

Speaker 3 (04:15):
But I think me and him have a great relationship
off the floor, so I think it kind of makes
it easy on the floor. You know, we're both point guard,
so when we were on the floor together, either one
of us can bring the ball up, either one of
us can score, put put our teammates in position to score.
So I think we just got to continue to find
a balance. And I think we're doing a good job
so far as just come with more reps and more
practice and more and more times in the game together

(04:37):
just figuring that out.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
Yeah, do you go against him in practice quite a bit?

Speaker 4 (04:41):
Yeah, I do.

Speaker 1 (04:43):
I always say on the air that he's a pest,
he's a painting. You don't want that guy underneath you,
you do, because he's really he's got he's got a
certain toughness and he's kind of scrappy and it looks
like he doesn't give you any room.

Speaker 4 (04:56):
To move, does it?

Speaker 3 (04:58):
And he's getting better at to fit in every dead
that I think the coaches are on the big about
just being a pest every day. He like even today
he did a great job, but just he's helped me
get better when smaller guards guard me. So he's pushing
me every day and I'm pushing him every day and
we're just trying to be the best that we can.

Speaker 2 (05:14):
Yeah, that's that's good teamwork.

Speaker 1 (05:15):
Okay, Silas Demri juniors with us. We'll be back one
few more minutes with him as we continue on the
