Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back here on the Yukon Hockey Coaches Show, it is
always a pleasure to welcome in. Joey Muldowney, young man
from lake View, New York, who where's number eight, came
back to the Huskies lineup after a couple of games
out from an injury, and he suffered against Providence last
Friday night, scored the overtime game winner. First, let's start there,
Joey walked me through what you saw in overtime in
the game winner.

Speaker 2 (00:21):
Yeah, I mean, you know, when I got on the ice,
they they were controlling the they were controlling the pace
when I was out there, so it was mainly just
playing defense and you know, just making sure i'd my guy.
But then they fumbled the puck and I saw an
opportunity to uh, you know, kind of spring cro offense.
So I took it and broke free. And I wanted

(00:43):
to shoot the whole time, to be honest, I wanted
to shoot that puck low glove, but I just never
saw it never opened up, so and I ended up
deaking it last second there.

Speaker 1 (00:55):
All right, And you get yourselves a nice comform behind.
And why now we talked to Kayden shit a hand
a few minutes ago, and one thing that coach keV
talked about is it was a process based win kind
of like I guess Providence last week out there, and
he felt like, you guys played better Saturday than you
did Friday. Now, I know you're a spectator on the

(01:15):
ice Friday, but walk me through that you've been around
Cave enough to know his lingo. Here, what was more
impressive about Saturday versus Friday in your mind?

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Yeah, I mean we went back watching film. You know,
I just think that we we talked about a process based,
like a process that we want to follow, a process
that's going to help us win hockey games. And you know,
we talked about maturing and the type of team that
we want to be. And you know, Friday night, we

(01:48):
didn't have a great first that they doubled their shots.
I believe, you know, we came out in the second
pit stronger. We had a good you know, last minute
of the game, last two minutes of the game where
we popped a couple in, but ultimately we gave up
a lead on Friday night, and uh, we let up
and let a team back back in the game when

(02:10):
you know, we want to be a team that you know,
kind of just puts puts them out of their misery
and just you know, takes over, right. But you know,
instead we gave them hope and we let them back in.
But uh, you know, and then and then you go
on the Saturday night and we go down three, which

(02:31):
is fine. But the thing that I think stuck out
the most, you know, being on the bench was, you know,
when we went down three goals, there's no there's no
fear in our eyes, right, there's no fear behind anybody's eyes.
We all we all believe that we were still gonna
win the game. And then we had the ability to
win the game, right. You know, when we went down three,

(02:51):
we talk about resorting back to what we do best,
and that's our four check. So I think that we
got back to that, we got back to four checking.
We got a couple of goals off of you know,
just playing the right way, and we crawled back and
battled back, and that's just a huge character win. And
you know, if we want to be a results based team,

(03:13):
that's great. We could talk about how you know, that
Friday night game was awesome, but you know, we want
to be a process based team, and that's because that's
those are the teams that win championships. So, you know,
in terms of the process, I believe Saturday Night was
definitely more more of Viewcon hockey and Husky hockey, and
that's that's the type of team that we want to be.

Speaker 1 (03:35):
Joy will downie with us for a few minutes. Now.
We had a fabulous year last year, twenty nine goals,
eighteen assys, forty seven points total. You're playing with Honey
and Jake all year. You know, do you go into
a season, you know, how do I top this? Or
do you just go into an offseason? How do I
better myself as a hockey player at the complete game

(03:57):
and then let the results speak for themselves as as
you play this season.

Speaker 2 (04:02):
Yeah, exactly, I think that's exactly what it is. You know,
you can't go at least for me personally, I can't.
I can't be putting that that pressure on myself to
think that I have to score another twenty nine goals
in order to feel like I had a a more
successful season, right, you know, I think it's just doing

(04:23):
the right things away from the park, doing doing other things,
finishing hits, playing heavier, just doing what I need to
do as a as a leader, you know, just being
being a captain, right just those little things are are
things that I have the ability to work on now
this year and and I can focus more of that stuff,

(04:45):
you know, I think that production wise, I think a
few of us definitely, you know, wish we could be
doing a little bit better right now. But that's the
game of hockey, right Like, You're not always going to
be hot all each season long, right Like it took
me till the second half of the season to to start,
you know, to get going last year. So yeah, I

(05:08):
mean that's I think that's a part of it too
that you can look at, right is you know, just
that mental part of it is not getting frustrated and
knowing and trusting in the process and knowing that you
know they're going to start falling for you eventually, right right,
So you know, that's that's just some stuff to think
about and and work on as a as a player individually.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
Julie, You're taking thousands of shots in your career. Some
have gone in, some haven't. The post strike in the
Elite eight game in Allentown and overtime that close from
going to the Frozen four. Do you think about that
at all. What if.

Speaker 2 (05:51):
Sometimes I mean it's it's uh, it's in the past now, right.
I think it was definitely something that where I was like,
it definitely was you know, it's it's stung that that
one's stung a little bit and it sucked. But you know,
I think that that those are the types of situations.

(06:13):
Those are the moments that you need as an athlete
and that you need as a as a player, as
a team. You know, sometimes you need to come that
close in order to you know, push you push you
over the edge of what you guys need and like
really you know, have that belief of like listen, like

(06:35):
we we can do this. You know, like that's how
close we were, right, And you know, I guess said
sometimes that that's just what you need as a as
a program and as as a as a school, as
a team. That's just that those are those are the
things becoming being that close, those are the things that
bring you closer and you know, I think make that

(06:56):
belief even stronger that you can really do it.

Speaker 1 (07:00):
Finally, we started this zoom call all by asking you
about your hat. It says eleven day power play. Tell
me about the reason for the hat and what it
means to you in the in a lot of your friends.

Speaker 2 (07:13):
So the other day power play it's ran by one
of my good buddies parents back home. He uh uh,
he actually was playing for me in the past two years,
just Frans for the Sacred Heart, Liam Lezikowski. But it
originally started off, as you know, trying to break a
world world record for the longest hockey game ever. And

(07:33):
then he eventually grew into a charity event that has
gone on in the past few years. And you know,
me and my buddy Liam and all of our friends,
uh we play in it every year, raise money for it,
and uh you know, it's it's something that you know,
hits home for me too. I think, I just I

(07:54):
just recently lost my grandma within the past year to cancer,
so I know that, you know, it affects a lot
of people. It almost affects everybody cancer does. So I
mean every year the past few years they've been raising
over a million dollars like every year. So it's it's

(08:15):
been an awesome thing to be a part of and
it's been a privilege to be able to plan that
and uh, you know, raise to raise money for that.

Speaker 1 (08:22):
So that's fabulous. Congratulations on that. My condolence is on
the passing of your grandmother. I know what that needs
and cancer and stuff. Now let's get back to hockey.
Good luck this week and against New Hampshire and always, Joey,
thank you for a few minutes. Thank you all right.
