Speaker 1 (00:00):
Back on the Yukon Football Coaches Show. We're joined now
by Ramelo Murphy, red shirt senior wide receiver. Where's number
six for the Huskies, transferred from Arizona. Originally started at
Old Dominion. Let's talk about that first, Romelo. At Old Dominion,
you had a pretty good, pretty big part in what
they were doing. You caught twenty eight passes one year,
(00:21):
three touchdowns, I think you're right, twenty top twenty five
in the country and yards after catch. Then Arizona got
into four games. So did that go into your decision
to make a move east and come to Yukon and
for your final year?
Speaker 2 (00:37):
Well, you know, obviously originally like you know, oh do
you gave me opportunity, especially because you know, I went
to junior college before that, so they gave me opportunity.
I was really trying to, you know, get on the
field and make the most out of the opportunity I
was given. Again, so you know, oh do you gave
me a chance? And you know, I kind of did
what I needed to do. And then obviously some of
my my close friends that I played you know, football
(01:00):
with when I was younger, t Mac and Noah at
Arizona so you know, I felt there was a you
know opportunity to go over there and play, and you
know I got obviously went over there.
Speaker 3 (01:10):
Got was closer to home as well.
Speaker 2 (01:13):
But you know, sometimes you know, the cars don't get
dealt your way, you know what I mean, you know,
battle a couple of injuries, and you know, it just
didn't it didn't go my way. So you know, the
red the red shirt, the medical raid was kind of
you know, implemented on me. And you know it was
it was one of those things to where you kind
of had to take it to take it in the chin,
and you know, the way things were going, it was
kind of, you know, best for me to kind of
(01:34):
you know, find a find a you know, go another
direction obviously. And you know one of my uh my
my family friends, a little wild dude, was here before,
so I was you know, I was already super connected
with him.
Speaker 3 (01:49):
And then because she because in.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
The past the port before, they're they're trying to get
me heavy over here. And you know I trusted them
coach more obviously because Chiefs geetl Autumn, you know, in
coming this way, because they were emphasizing that it was
a great opportunity over here. So and plus it's like, shoot,
who wouldn't you know, come and play for your coach more,
you know what I mean. So legendary coach right there.
(02:12):
So plus it was, you know, try to change the
culture over here. So why not come and try to
you know, start start something and continue something, you know.
Speaker 1 (02:21):
M Yeah, Ramelo Murphy's with us. Where's number six for
the Huskies's from Fremont, California. If you don't know where
that is, it's just north of San Jose and across
a little east of Palo Alto. We went to Santa
Margarita High School. What about the football out in California?
I here, there's a lot of a lot of good
football players in Cali.
Speaker 3 (02:42):
Yes there.
Speaker 2 (02:42):
So you know, I'm gonna you know, be biased of
course and say the best football players come from California.
Speaker 3 (02:48):
You know we have.
Speaker 2 (02:48):
I'm gonna be biased again and say we got the
best high school football too, you know. So I don't
think anybody, you know, we will always have arguments in
the uh in the locker room about.
Speaker 3 (02:58):
You know, who's high school team would you know go
be better against whoever?
Speaker 2 (03:03):
I'm like, y' y'all are not touching any of the
California team, so you know, I gotta be biased.
Speaker 3 (03:09):
So of course I.
Speaker 1 (03:11):
Got it four catches against Syracuse fifty one yards, but
the one that's the number to sit out for me
thirty four yards after catch. Let's talk about that. When
you make a catch, most of the time DB's are
all over you. Do you are you thinking as the
ball's coming to you what you're going to do next?
Or do you catch the ball first? And you got
to split second and make a decision to what you're going.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
To do next.
Speaker 2 (03:34):
Yeah, well, I mean, obviously, you know, you kind of
get a feel, you know, pre snapple, you know where
everybody should be if it's man, you know, if it's own,
certain stuff like that, obviously reading different leverages, so you
can kind of get a feel you know where people
can be. But you know, most important that you got
to catch the ball first.
Speaker 3 (03:50):
Without the ball, you can't you can't do anything, you
know what I mean. And especially this.
Speaker 2 (03:55):
Past week, we're emphasizing finishing, and you know, because she was,
you know, telling us that yak is you know, yards
have to catch is what gets you paid, you know
what I mean? And that's what separates good from great.
So you know, trying to get you know, yards, have
to catch after everything. You know what I mean is
something that us as a receiver room or and so
(04:15):
even as an offense or you know, trying to emphasize
because that's that's the difference of you know, explosives and
five yard games, you know what I mean. So I
was just you know, you know, really just focusing on
you know, obviously catching the ball first and you know,
just trying to do what I do after.
Speaker 1 (04:30):
So Joe Fiano threw for two hundred and seventy four
yards against Syracuse last year. The Huskies passed for around
two hundred a game this year with this crew of
wide receivers.
Speaker 3 (04:42):
To me, this.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
Guy's the limit. You got so much talent, so many
different ways to move the ball down the field through
the air. You got the tight ends, guys like you
and Skyler Bell. Let's talk about him for a second.
He's a guy that is just lighting it up. And yeah,
I'm sure you work with him, he's in your unit
of receivers. What's your take on Skylar Bell.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Uh, He's he's a professional. I'll say that one for sure.
He's he's somebody that comes into the building every day
with the mindset of getting better no matter what day,
no matter you know, you know how he's feeling. He's
always you know, locked in and worried about, you know,
getting better.
Speaker 3 (05:23):
You know, want to know today, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (05:25):
And that's that's somebody that's you know, leading our room
and being being a leader, especially us as you know,
vets like he's he's somebody that you know, especially like
the younger guys or even just even myself. Look look
at you know, say like on film, like catching the
ball again, like the yak stuff like again like last
week he had a seven yard catch, like it was
(05:47):
a hitch route that he took to the to the house.
It was like one thing that you know, I felt
like I could change my game was getting yards have
to catch. So you know, he's he's somebody that you
kind of you kind of get a fit. You don't
really get the opportunity to be around professionals all the time.
And he's somebody that you know you can tell he
the good, the good from the great, you know what
(06:08):
I mean, He's he's trying to be great, you know
what I mean.
Speaker 3 (06:11):
So he's he's he's going to be spectacular this year.
For sure.
Speaker 1 (06:16):
That's a good thing to aspire to be great. All right,
quick final thing. You're coming off a loss at Syracuse.
You guys won the game for fifty five minutes, but
you didn't win the last six or seven minutes. How
do you put that behind you and really focus on
winning at Delaware?
Speaker 2 (06:32):
I mean, shoot, obviously, you know, losing is always going
to be hard, But it's just a matter of, you know,
how you bounce back. You can't sit here and dwell
on what should have been, what could have been, you
know what I mean. You got to emphasize what's you know,
coming in the future, you know what I mean. You
you gotta you gotta move on, like that's just that's
just life, you know what I mean. Sometimes life is
(06:55):
about Duley's either do or you don't, you know what
I mean. So it's the matter of are you going
to you know, change the fact of that, you know,
change what happened on Saturday, or we're just going to
sit here and soak the whole time, you know, against Delaware,
because again it's another on the road, you know, game
at their house, and again they just played Colorado, and
(07:17):
you tell that they're they're a good team as well,
so we can't you know, take nothing lightly in him.
And we got to prepare the same way that we
were prepared for anybody, even how we prepared against Syracuse.
Speaker 3 (07:27):
It's the same, it's the same thing, you know what
I mean.
Speaker 2 (07:30):
So we just got to emphasize, you know, dominating and
just playing to our standard.
Speaker 3 (07:34):
That's just you know, how we got to go about
it the rest of the season.
Speaker 1 (07:37):
Yeah, it sounds like a plan. I'm with you, all right.
I'll be there too against Delaware and we'll have the
call for you, little Murphy. We appreciate your time.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Thanks, yes, sir, thank you. All right.
Speaker 1 (07:47):
That's the show, The Yukon Football Coaches Show. Thanks to
Jim Moore or Mela Murphy of course, and Ty Chan
who joined us the offensive lineman. We'll talk to you
again on Saturday. We'll have the pregame at one thirty,
tick off at three at Delaware the Huskies take on
the Blue Hens. Thanks for joining us.
