Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome back to the Yukon Football Coaches Show. Yukon gets
set to take on Boston College in Boston on a
Saturday at twelve noon. Our pregame begins ninety minutes before that.
Bob Joyce will be on the call with the Wayne
Norman for that one, and Adam Jardine will be on
the sidelines. We're joined now by Matt Hoffman, the defensive
lineman for Yukon. Matt, this is a game that's I
(00:24):
think a lot of Yukon fans point to. It's kind
of a proving point. Yukon wants to prove they belong
on the level of the ACC teams and Boston College.
How much does that play into your preparation for a
game like this?
Speaker 2 (00:39):
I mean, we already know what we're capable of. It's
just a system matter of going out and doing it.
Speaker 1 (00:45):
So as you work out this week and you're getting ready,
you're looking at a team, your team defensively, that maybe
played their best game last week. Would you agree with
that assessment?
Speaker 2 (00:58):
Oh? Yes, sir?
Speaker 1 (01:00):
What did you think of? What did you like about
what you guys did on defense last week?
Speaker 2 (01:05):
I mean, I think we all just went out there
and made a decision that we knew exactly what we
were capable of and we were just going to go
put it on tape. I think everybody did a good
job at running to the ball and just playing with
their hair on fire. As a coach, you.
Speaker 1 (01:19):
Say, right, it was a little reminiscent. I thought of
the first three quarters against Syracuse on the road. Do
you guys were all over the place there? It just
didn't turn out to be a victory. So in the
ensuing week since Syracuse and you played it at Delaware
and then you got three wins in a row. Now,
have you as a defense changed in the way you
(01:41):
approach things as far as as you say, getting after
it and really you know, rallying to the ball.
Speaker 2 (01:47):
Yeah, I mean, like I said, it's just to play
good defense, you've got to make a decision each and
every place. So that's in practice and that's in games.
Like I said, we're capable of doing it. We just
need to make that decision.
Speaker 1 (02:00):
Yeah, the defense nine new starters under Matt Brock. Tell
me about the transition that you guys have gone through
and getting to be teammates and playing together as a unit.
Because I don't think a lot of people really understand
that it's football is a moving a game of all
these moving parts. Tell me about that development that you've
(02:21):
had now as a unit.
Speaker 2 (02:24):
I mean, yeah, it's definitely a lot. But we practice hard.
We practice. We get a lot of reps in with
each other every single day. Were rotating a lot. We
just we make sure that everybody knows exactly what to
do when their name is called, no matter what. So
it's just a lot of reps, I think is the
biggest thing that gets us a hold one page.
Speaker 1 (02:45):
Yeah. One of the things about your defense too, is
that three three five alignment you do as a d aligneman,
which you are. You got three men up front. Is
that harder in terms of stopping run stop or getting
pressure on the pass? Sure? Tell me about that alignment
because it's a little unusual. Not everyone plays a three
three five.
Speaker 2 (03:06):
I mean, defense is about putting pressure on different groups,
So it doesn't really matter who has the pressure, depending
on what coverage it is or what front we're in.
I think just our mentality is what helps us get
the job done.
Speaker 1 (03:22):
Yeah, it's tricky. One thing you guys have done really
well this year is put pressure on quarterbacks. I mean
the sack numbers are impressive. The linebackers are getting in
on quarterbacks, the d linemen are getting in on quarterbacks.
What is the secret to that success, because that's not
easy to do.
Speaker 2 (03:41):
I mean, I got to give credit to coach Brock.
That's his that's the things third down. Yeah, he loves
third down. He's a nerd for it. But so are we.
It rubs us on, It rubs off on us, and
we want to do our best to understand each and
every third down call and why he's calling it, and
what our job is and what the peel behind find
us job is. So you can kind of put those
(04:02):
puzzle pieces together and make sure we get the right outcome.
Speaker 1 (04:05):
Yeah, Matt Hoffman's with us. Yukon defensive lineman Husky's getting
set to take on Boston College. We talked to wes
Hoe earlier in the show, talked to coach More as well,
you look at your offensive line. I know you got
your own unit. You got to worry about what you do.
But as you assess Yukon's offensive line here the last
couple of years, that's wes Hoe in the middle of it.
(04:27):
It's been pretty successful in terms of running the ball
and protecting quarterbacks. What do you see about your offensive
line that makes them successful?
Speaker 2 (04:35):
We just got we got a bunch of athletes up front.
They played extremely hard. I mean I have to practice
against them every single day and it's sometimes it's annoying,
but it gets gets me better and it gets us
all better. But props of them because they played. They
played very hard every snap.
Speaker 1 (04:53):
Yeah, the defense hadn't had a lot of turnovers until
the other day against FIU. That's always exciting. This is
the kind of thing that Jim Moore has been talking
about if we get some turnovers and get better field position.
Our turnovers just kind of a product of the way
you guys play, Or is it something you can consistently
go out and say, we're gonna make these guys give
(05:15):
it up.
Speaker 2 (05:16):
Yeah, for sure. I mean, like I said, playing with
your hair on fire, if you run into the ball
and there's a fumble, if you got a sea of
blue coming in, like, we're gonna end up with the ball.
But yeah, as long as everyone's doing their job, we
takeaway should come.
Speaker 1 (05:31):
Yeah. The bye week, I forgot to ask us about this.
I'm gonna ask you, what's that like? For you. Do
you get a day off, do you walk away from
the state, you know, the facility and just you know,
just kind of rest your mind a little bit. How
do you handle a bye week?
Speaker 2 (05:48):
I mean, I think our guys we don't want to
get away from football. I think I think we make
the best of it, and we definitely focus on getting
our bodies healthy. But we don't get we don't get
away from football. We're still watching film. We still we're
practicing hard.
Speaker 1 (06:04):
When we had the chance to, Yeah, and the extra
time to look at film, we were talking about that.
How can you make that a valuable asset for you
as you go into this next game, having extra time
to look at what the other team's doing.
Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, I mean, if you get ahead, start on somebody
and you might watch the same play a couple of times,
which doesn't matter because you might pick up on something
new that you didn't see the first time.
Speaker 1 (06:29):
Yeah. Interesting, Okay, all right, Matt. We appreciated good luck
yukon four and two. First half could have been six
and zero, But we're not going to go there. Let's
see what happens at Boston College. I have a good feeling,
how about you, Yes, sir, all right, that's Matt Hoffman.
We appreciate him and Wes Hoe as well, and of
