Speaker 1 (00:00):
Now we're back on the UKON Men's Basketball Coaches Show.
Mike Christino, Silas Demery Junior Silas from Georgia and the SEC. Yeah,
I haven't talked to you about that, but that experience
had to be pretty good for you because that's one
of the best conferences in the country obviously, and you
travel with some really tough spots to play basketball. How
do you think that's helped your development being in the SEC.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
I think the SEC helped me a lot, you know.

Speaker 2 (00:24):
I think just being being at Georgia and you know,
kind of being towards like a middle of the pack team.
You know, you have a certain type of feeling you
have going into those big time games like when you
play at Tennessee, at Kentucky or your.

Speaker 3 (00:37):
Arkansas or even Missouri last year.

Speaker 2 (00:39):
Like just going into those places and you know, knowing
that you got to be ready and knowing that any
given night, any team can be beat. You know, it
was a lot of fun and it was a great
learning experience because to play I think I started every
game as a freshman. To do that and to grow
as I did as a freshman was was was a
great was great for me and I was able to
learn a lot, and I thing I can use.

Speaker 3 (01:00):
Some of those things I learned in the SEC here.

Speaker 1 (01:03):
Yeah, the transfer portals has been very active around the country.
Players move around quite a bit. And you you made
a move from the SEC now you're here at Yukon.
Tell me what went into your thought process to make
the change and move to a different place. For what
what got in your mind about what you wanted to
do and why you wanted to make that decision.

Speaker 2 (01:24):
Well, I mean it was kind of tough for me
at first, you know, just being there for two years,
just everything I had done there, you know, just a
relationship I had built. It was hard, but I knew
to get where I wanted to be, I had to
to move on and go on to stage where you know,
you're on a big time stage and you can showcase
your skills and your abilities and show that you can

(01:45):
be coachable and playing a good system and an NBA
kind of system. You know, just being here, I think
that for me was my biggest thing. And I think
just going through that process of being recruited again was
kind of crazy, you know, a whole bunch of the
recruiting process. It's kind of it was kind of like
speed dating because it was the portal happened so fast

(02:07):
to like get a good feel for who you who
you kind of like or lean towards early And I
think you kind stuck out to me the most early,
even from the first zoom call. Just how they how
they talk to my family and I and just the
relationship and the like. It just felt right from the gym.

Speaker 1 (02:22):
Yeah, So what were your first impressions of Dan Hurley
on a zoom call?

Speaker 3 (02:27):
He was a cool, laid back guy.

Speaker 1 (02:29):
Man. Oh wait, wait a minute, hold on, are you sure?

Speaker 2 (02:33):
He's definitely different like on the phone versus on the court.
It's definitely a difference off the court. He's a cool guy.
You know, he cares about you. He's he listens, and
I think the biggest thing for me is if you
can give me eye contact even through a zoom like,
I can tell that you're listening.

Speaker 3 (02:48):
Like I respect that a lot. He did that. Yeah.

Speaker 1 (02:51):
So now you're having practice every day? Uh, if you're
not having a great day of practice, what's that like?

Speaker 3 (02:57):
With Dan? It's tough.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
He's gonna keep chating you and he's gonna keep pushing you,
and he just wants you to show that you're tough
and that no matter what, even though it seems like
you might not be having your best day, no matter what,
he's gonna have your back. But he's pushing you and
he wants you to be prepared for when you get
into that game and you face a little bit of adversity.
You're gonna respond with toughness and you're not gonna let
that one situation or that one little problem deteriorate you

(03:21):
and you start bringing down your teammates like he pushes
us every day to be prepared for any moment.

Speaker 1 (03:26):
Does it help? Do you think that Dan Hurley was
a guard in college himself.

Speaker 2 (03:32):
Yeah, I think it definitely helps. I mean, he sees
things sometimes that we might not see. So he pulls
me to the side and we have a little conversation
and it kind of helps me out and I start
to look and notice it, and then when I start
to do it, we talk about it and then we
move on to the next thing that he wants to
see better. So it's all about constant progress with him
and knowing that he played point guard, it helps me

(03:53):
a lot because I can lean on him.

Speaker 1 (03:55):
Long long time ago, I worked with Walt Fraser Clyde
in New York with the next He had that little
baseline jumper that you've made a couple of now, and
I've actually said that on the air. You remind me
a little bit of Clyde, and that's a nice compliment.
That spot on the court. You don't see guys making
shots there that often. I know the three point field

(04:15):
goal is so important, but you seem to be comfortable
in that mid range, especially on the baseline.

Speaker 3 (04:20):
Why do you think that is.

Speaker 2 (04:22):
I think it's just something I've repped over a whole
bunch of times, you know, just repping that wonderable pull
up going to the baseline. I think it's just a
comfortability thing, being able to get to that spot on
the floor and knowing that most of the time, I
feel confident every shot, every mechandic is the right way,
and now I've repped it so many.

Speaker 3 (04:40):
Times, I feel like it's going in every time.

Speaker 1 (04:42):
Yeah, well, you made a big one against BYU. By
the way, congratulations on that. All right, silas, we appreciate you.
Have a nice Thanksgiving and we'll see you in New
York on Friday.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
Yes, sir, thank you. Having a happy Thanksgiving to you
as well.

Speaker 1 (04:55):
All right, that's Silas Demery Jr. And that wraps up
the Yukon Men's Basketball Coaching Show. Thanks to Dan Early
and Silas as well. We'll talk to you again. On
Friday twelve noon is the pregame show. Twelfth third the
opening Chip. Yukon takes on Illinois on Learfield
