(00:00):
Welcome back to the Yukon Hockey CoachesShow. Coach Cabell, bring things up
on the rear and we'll preview theBC series coming up here in just a
few minutes. But Andrew Lucas iswith us. The senior defenseman from Alexandria,
Virginia. Came here by the wayof the University of Vermont and beautiful
Burlington, and as we mentioned, with the Hudson points and four of his
last five four goals, three assist, two game winners, including the game

(00:22):
winner on Saturday against Merrimack. Firstof all, Andrew, good to have
you with us. And it's gotto feel, i mean, other than
the end result team wise, inthe struggles that this team has had,
being around five hundred all season long, it's got to be nice for you
to see the puck find the backof the net and what you're getting confidence
and gaining what you've been doing offensivelylately. Yeah, it's always nice to

(00:43):
see yourself get rewarded. But youknow, I mean, we're just all
out there trying to win every game, so we're all trying to do our
part to just get more goals thanthe other team, you know, So
walk me through the game winner onSaturday. What kind of shot, what
kind of play was it? Well, it was it was a good pass
from Perceval to try and find meback door, and the puck just I

(01:07):
think hit a defender stick, sothen it bounced up and went into the
corner, and I knew there wasn'tmuch time left and I was low in
the zone, so I didn't wantto turn it over and spring their rush
because they're pretty dangerous off it.So I just kind of took it around
the net and found some soft iceoff the wall on the right wing and
saw lane and shot it and Ididn't see it going. I just saw

(01:29):
the rest arm points. So it'spretty exciting. Yeah, for sure.
Did do you feel from a standpointof leadership standpoints, the team responded the
way you hoped it would after whathappened on Friday? Yeah? Absolutely.
I mean, we have team fromthe seniors all the way to freshman.
You know, we lead by committeeon this team, and it I wasn't

(01:53):
surprised by how we responded, butit was it was a nice thing to
see, just with our response andour compete on Friday, and how we
were more disciplined and we were ableto show our resilience again. You have
the A on your sweater. Wasthat were you the late edition this year?
The preseason vote? And what doesit mean to you to wear that
A? I mean, it's anhonor to have your teammates vote for you.

(02:15):
And I mean, at the endof the day, it's it's a
vote that just means you're doing theright thing. So I didn't really take
too much pressure from it or anythinglike that. It's more of just an
honor that your teammates voted for you. And then now I'm just going to
try and go in there and dothe best I can. Lead by example,
lead with a voice, like ifyou guys have questions, I'm always

(02:36):
there to talk to. But it'swe have so many leaders on this team
that we could have had like six, seven, eight other guys get that
letter. So it's it's a it'sit's an honor, but you know,
there's there's still plenty of work tobe done. It doesn't really change all
that much. Now you're no strangerto Connecticut. You spent a few years

(02:57):
at Loomis Chafey, playing in theprep school leagues here before going out to
Brooks Alberta, And we'll get tothat in a minute, But tell me
about some of your experiences playing inWindsor. Oh, Windsor was awesome.
I loved the island. I meanwe Ali flynt On. Our team also
went there and we just shared somememories of that. But Loomis was great.
The good coaches is a fun timefor four years, like a lot

(03:19):
of good hockey memories, good memoriesoff the ice, good memories with friends,
and the dorms like it's it justI think prepared me a little better
for college living on your own, like living in a dorm. So I
had nothing but awesome memories from Loomis. Did you play any other sports other
than hockey at Loomis? Yeah?I played a bunch actually, So in
the fall we always did weightlifting, just the hockey team because we do the

(03:43):
split season on the weekend, soit's tough to do other sports. But
I played lacrosse for a year,I played golf. I had a concussion
my junior year, but then mysenior year I played ultimate frisbee in the
spring and that one was pretty funplay. You play all these different sports
and I'm sure it helps you insome way. Shape or form on the

(04:03):
rink. Absolutely. Yeah. Igrew up playing a ton of sports,
and I don't know that would changeany of that. Like I grew up
playing a lot of soccer, playinga lot of I played lacrosse for a
couple of years before high school.I played basketball, I played Yeah,
playing sports is it's a lot offun. Just you get a bunch of
different tools and skill sets from allof that. So Andrew, after your

(04:28):
time at Louis, you went toBrooks, Alberta, Canada to play with
the Brooks Bandits. Brooks is inthe southwest part of Alberta, between Calgary
and Medicine Hat on a transit transCanadian Highway. What's it like to play
in the middle of nowhere? It'sfun. It's I get I get a
little bit of crap for this, but I always compared it to the TV

(04:50):
show Friday Night Lights, like it'sit's a small town, but the whole
community like rides with the Brooks Bandits, and we had so much support and
we were a pretty good team whenI was there, So it was it
was a ton of fun, eventhough there wasn't all that much to do
in the town. Fifty seven andthree, I'd say that's pretty good.
Yeah that wasn't that the heck doyou pull that off? Yeah? Now

(05:14):
you grew up in Virginia, soyou're a Caps fan, I would trust.
Yeah, big Caps fan, favoritehockey players that you've followed growing up,
doesn't doesn't not necessarily be a memberof the Caps. So obviously Ovechkin
I was a big fan of.But my favorite player growing up, and
this is a guy that my dadkind of got me cheering four lot,
was Nicholas Backstrom, the guy whopassed on the puck all the time.

(05:38):
Like I just loved his vision andhow he found soft dice and found passing
lanes, and he was he wasa lot of fun to watch, and
I thought he was pretty underappreciated growingup. So we were talking before we
started rolling on this interview. It'syour mom's side of the family that has
a hockey back around. Your uncleplayed college hockey, correct, Yeah,
yeah, a little deeper of ahockey background. My dad's side, they

(06:01):
he has a lot of family inMichigan, so they he would always go
back for Christmas and play pond hockey. So he liked the game too.
But yeah, my uncle, mymom's brother played competitively growing up through college.
So big weekend coming up, itdoesn't get any easier. I mean,
this list league is solid top tobottom and Boston College comes up this

(06:24):
weekend starting Friday at Boston College. What are your thoughts on the Eagles?
Have you seen much of them yet? Yeah, I've watched a few of
their games. I mean, there'sno easy teams in Hockey East, but
BC is definitely going to be atougher one, and they have a really
good group of young forwards who arehigh in prospects, and I'm just excited.
It's going to be a fun weekend. I think. I think our

(06:44):
team's going to come out ready tocompete and just try and outskate them,
and it's going to be I'm justexcited. Yep. And we'll have Friday
night's game on the radio here beginningat six forty five. Andrew, appreciate
the time, best of luck thisweekend. Thank you. All right,
we'll wrap things up with Coach Cavs. The Yukonaki Coaches Show rolls on here
on Learfield in just a moment
