Speaker 1 (00:00):
I should ask, well two part question Number one, have
you come back down.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
To earth yet?
Speaker 3 (00:06):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (00:06):
Lately?
Speaker 1 (00:08):
And I guess number two, have you sobered up from
Sunday night yet?
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Yes? Yes, yes, we're We're past that. We're past that, dude.
Speaker 1 (00:18):
I gotta tell you what an amazing, what an amazing
weekend on the outside, right, I can't even imagine on
the On the inside, I was at the game on
Friday night here and here in d C doing and
I'll be very on it, I teared up watching everything
everything take place.
Speaker 2 (00:36):
It was, it was.
Speaker 1 (00:36):
It was just amazing to be there and to see
it happen. And it's crazy. You go into a game
where where somebody needs a hat trick and you go, oh, yeah,
he can do it, as if getting a hat trick
is the easiest thing in the world. But you just
take it for granted to go, yeah, oh you'll get
a hat trick, and oh my god, he gets it too.
Speaker 2 (00:56):
Yeah, I know, I know.
Speaker 3 (00:58):
It honestly felt like it was like it was just
meant to be and supposed to happen that way. You know,
he's just an incredible player and an incredible teammate and
and he had.
Speaker 2 (01:12):
The you know, a flair for the dramatic and for
those moments.
Speaker 3 (01:15):
And not many guys have that, and you're totally right,
Like going into the game, it was like, Okay, just
needs three.
Speaker 2 (01:20):
Meanwhile, he's played like I think, like.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
You know, fourteen and ninety games or something, thirty five
hat tricks and you know, he that's that's that's not
a very high percentage of of you know, getting a
getting a hat trick in a game. I think it's
like four or five percent. So you know, it was
awesome to be a part of. And and uh, you know,
it would have been great if he could have got three,
but two was pretty cool too as well.
Speaker 2 (01:44):
We had to celebrate twice. Hey, let me ask you this.
Speaker 1 (01:47):
OV said, I want to say, I can't remember if
it was one of which one of the press conferences
it was, but there was obviously the opportunity for the
empty net and he chose to set it out. But
he did say that I can't remember if it was
you and Wilson or you and somebody, but he said
you asked him about fifteen times on the bench, are
you gonna go? Are you gonna go?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Are you gonna go?
Speaker 1 (02:07):
Were you just all over him about let's go do it.
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Well, I just didn't want to be the guy that
that shot the puck in the ante neet if I
was on the ice with him, you know, and and
he didn't and he didn't want it, you know, so
obviously from the outside, if I was on the ice
with him and everyone in the crowd is chanting to
get over the puck, but he doesn't want it, and
then I shoot it, you know, it doesn't look doesn't look.
Speaker 2 (02:26):
Very good in my behalf, dick dick. So so so.
Speaker 3 (02:31):
That's kind of what I was more more concerned about,
because obviously, if he wanted it, we could, we could.
I'm sure Finna you know, work away to get him
the puck with the anty neetter, but you know, he
I don't think he really wanted I think it was
I think.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
It was perfect the way it happened.
Speaker 3 (02:43):
And uh, you know, he had some chances after the
goalie got put back in the net to the score,
and it wasn't meant to be that night, and and
it was kind of the table was set for the
next you know, that for for Sunday, And can't really
write it any better than.
Speaker 2 (02:55):
That, but you know, you know, what's funny.
Speaker 1 (02:56):
Like, going back to talking about going into the game,
you were like, oh, yeah, Ovi just needs to get
a hat trick tonight. Is when when when when the
two when when it gets tied up on that Friday night?
And you're right, the next game we obviously all know,
is on Sunday on Long Island. Again, it wasn't a
case of anybody going like, ooh, I wonder if OV
gets it today. It was just like, oh, turn the
(03:16):
TV on. Ov's getting it today. There wasn't even a question.
Speaker 3 (03:21):
Yeah, yeah, that's that's uh what someone who has eight
hundred and ninety five goals does to people. Uh, he's
expected to score and he does, and uh, you know
it's Uh.
Speaker 2 (03:33):
I totally agree.
Speaker 3 (03:33):
I was texting my dad the day before on Saturday,
and he's like, you know, I think I'd love to
for Oby to break it, you know, in DC at
home and stuff, in front of the home crowd. He goes,
but I don't think it's gonna get that far. And
I said, I couldn't agree more with you. And when
Ov gets hot, he gets hot, right, and he is hot,
and he was hot and he still is hot. So
it's fun to be a part of But I totally agree.
(03:54):
I think everyone knew that it was not getting past Sunday.
Speaker 1 (03:56):
Hey, so let me ask you this, And I was
going to ask you about your fan and like we
we've talked about before, Dylan, obviously you have a brother
who plays in Anaheim for the Docks. You have a
brother who plays in Hershey, you come from a hockey family,
so like that, like your whole family is very inside
NHL hockey. Were even they like caught up in it,
(04:17):
Like does your brother does your brother Ryan call and
go like, hey, what's the what's it like?
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Like can he be a fan of it? Also, I
think everyone's a fan. I'm a fan of what was happening.
You know.
Speaker 3 (04:30):
I think my family has a lot of respect for
the game of hockey and you know, the greatness that
you know that we get to watch and play with
and have played with. And I called them right away
after the game and kind of whether the it was
you know, some still some stuff going on in the
room and just you know, they were just they're proud.
They were you know, thought it was the coolest thing ever.
And and you know, you don't really know what to
(04:53):
say because it's like they're you're never going to experience
this again, and you know, maybe no one will ever
get experience what we what I just experienced, what we
just experienced. So sure, it's something that you know, you
got to just soak in the moment and just try
to enjoy it. And I wanted to share with as
many people as I could because of how cool and
special it really was. Like the guy's a living legend
(05:13):
and just broke one of the records that was you know,
it was it was untouchable.
Speaker 2 (05:19):
Yeah, I know.
Speaker 3 (05:20):
So it's it's kind of like you just got to
kind of sit back and enjoy the ride and enjoy
the moments. And then I feel like that's what I
try to do, and my family did as well.
Speaker 1 (05:28):
So going back to Friday, when he when when when
OV scored, I thought, take Alex and put him aside
for a second. I thought there was nobody more excited
in the building than John Carlson. When Carlson jump and
leapt right into the boards, I thought, there there's nobody
in this building that's more excited than John Carlson. Until
(05:50):
forty eight hours later when he broke the record. I
don't know if there was anybody more excited alex Aside
than Dylan Strom. Dude, you were going crazy.
Speaker 3 (06:03):
Yeah, I know, I tend to get like that sometimes.
I'm a pretty emotional person. Uh and uh, you know,
I think I think I I'm gonna say this humbly.
I think that I got the short end of the
stick because I was on the outside of the pile
and everyone could see me jumping. I think everyone was
also jumping. But uh no, I was definitely excited. I mean,
(06:24):
you know, I've got the very fortunate enough to play
with him over the last three years and be on
his line and try to help him, you know, be
a small part of, you know, this incredible journey.
Speaker 2 (06:34):
And I was just, yeah, I was just happy.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
I was, you know, there you kind of don't really
know what to do with your hands in that moment,
and you know, you're just you want to get to
the pile as fast as you can, and just everyone
is just going so bananas and crazy, and I was
definitely happy.
Speaker 2 (06:49):
You know what part of history, you know.
Speaker 1 (06:51):
What it reminded me of, though, Dylan is the the
and you grew up playing this game, is watching you know, Mike.
My kids both grew up playing hockey also, right at
the age of like ten U or twelve U, and
somebody scores a big goal and jumps in and automatically
does the Superman slide, and all of his you know,
(07:13):
little ten year old teammates are all jumping around for
that moment. A bunch of NHL guys who sit with
the best record in the Eastern Conference look like a
bunch of ten you kids who had just scored a
big goal.
Speaker 2 (07:27):
I think that's a great way to describe it.
Speaker 3 (07:28):
And I think I could tell you that I felt
exactly like a ten year old kid when that happened,
and like you just played your first ever overtime game
to win the finals of a tournament or something, and
it was just yeah, it was.
Speaker 2 (07:40):
Just pure, pure, you know, unbelievable moment.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
And uh, you know, you want you just want to
bottle at that feeling and just and just take it
with you for the rest of the year.
Speaker 1 (07:49):
Did you like the on ice ceremony at the h
out on the Island.
Speaker 3 (07:53):
I thought it was fantastic. I thought everything about it.
I think there was a total total hit. I thought
that it wasn't too long. It felt like at least,
you know, I thought it was, you know, they everyone
spoke for a couple of minutes. You know, I needed
to speak. They had the carpets rolled out there quickly.
It was picked up quickly. The Islanders seemed, you know,
like not too bothered by it. I think the fans
(08:13):
are into it, and I thought it was very very
well done.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah, I thought it was very classy. I agree with you.
Speaker 1 (08:21):
Also, I love there. There's some footage that came out afterwards,
and I'm sure you've seen it in the locker room
afterwards when Betman and obviously Gretzky is in there and stuff,
but Betman is addressing the team and everyone is standing
there very very like attentive, if you will, like just
taking it all in right. The Commissioner's in the locker room,
Wayne's in the locker room, OV standing right in the middle,
(08:43):
and they're talking about you know, professionalism and teammates and
the organization.
Speaker 2 (08:48):
And I start looking around.
Speaker 1 (08:49):
I'm like, let's see, oh, there's this one, there's Tom,
there's you know whoever.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
And I look in the back and there's.
Speaker 1 (08:56):
Dylan Beer in hand, arm up on another buddy's shoulder,
going like, yeah, damn right, this is awesome.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Yeah, yeah, I remember exactly the moment I was. I
had my arm around du Bois. We were just sitting
there enjoying a beer. I guess, standing there enjoying a
beer and and uh, you know, listening to you know,
history and and Gary kind of talk about you know,
the history of the game and and why this is
special for the Caps and for Ovi and you know,
how much respect that you know, we showed in the
(09:25):
game and and Ovie has you know, throughout his career,
and just one of those cool moments where like it
kind of sinks in, it kind of hits you, and.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
You know you're just you're just kind of, you know,
taking it all in. And it was.
Speaker 3 (09:38):
Yeah, it was I think maybe one of the best
tasting beers I've ever had in my life.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
Hey, let me ask you this, Dylan, when when something
like this happens. And I'm and I'm asking this for
a very specific reason, but when when something like this
happens do you reflect?
Speaker 2 (09:54):
And And a lot was made.
Speaker 1 (09:55):
You know, you were out on the ice and Tom
Wilson and how fitting it was and how you've been
there for take you know, obviously Backstrom and Carlson, but
I mean, you had big shoes to fill when you
got here? Is do you reflect on your own career
when something like this happens.
Speaker 3 (10:12):
Yeah, I mean yeah, for sure, for sure, I think
you're just you're kind of grateful, You're you're happy to
be in the moment that you're definitely grateful though, definitely
like I said, grateful and thankful that that you know,
you got put in a position to succeed and you know,
you get the chance to play with greatness, to be honest,
and you know those things don't happen very often, and
you kind of take a step back and think like
(10:34):
how how how did this all end up to get here?
Speaker 2 (10:36):
And you know, you're just like, I can't keep stressing enough.
Speaker 3 (10:40):
You just you're very grateful that you know you have
the opportunity to play.
Speaker 2 (10:45):
This game that you know, now I guess it's a job.
It doesn't feel like a job, but it's a job
and still a game.
Speaker 3 (10:50):
And we're still kids at heart and just you know,
doing our childhood dream every day and it's yeah, it's
it's special and there's there's no way around that. So
it's definitely you like to sit back and especially after,
like you said, a moment like this or when oh,
he does something incredible and kind of just you know,
you get to experience greatness and that's it's cool.
Speaker 1 (11:08):
Because I don't know if you saw what Paul Bisonette
said on TNT. They were one of the ones that
were carrying the game right and Bisinet and I know
you two have history, but he was talking about how
happy he was for you and was talking about how
you got drafted to go to Arizona. From Arizona, you
(11:30):
go to Chicago and he was like, Chicago, let him go,
Like it was just go. And you end up in
DC and you come into a position where you're gonna
have some shoes to fill, you're going to be a
big part of the offense. And at that moment when
you got here, things really took off and Dylan Strom
became that high level, top level draft pick that he
(11:50):
was going that he was supposed to be, and he
just seemed genuinely, genuinely in Ovechkin's moment, genuinely happy that
not only you got to be a part of it,
but that it's a for him. It was a moment
to look back and reflect on you That's why I
was asking if you reflect on it yourself.
Speaker 2 (12:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (12:10):
I mean, you know, Bus and I have a great relationship.
He's not been nothing but kind to me. Nothing, but
you know, respectful and and you know, very much in my.
Speaker 2 (12:19):
Corner the whole ride.
Speaker 3 (12:20):
And uh, you know, for him to say those things
is very much appreciative. I'm very appreciative of that. And
you know, he's done a lot for the game of hockey.
You know, he's you know, jokes around as a you know,
a bit of a goofball, but you know, he he
does a lot for the game of hockey. And you know,
I'm I'm thankful to call him a friend. I just
(12:41):
got off of an interview with him yesterday. I just
posted it today. And he's just a great guy that
you know, respects, respects hockey and respects the players and
is always in the player's side. So nothing but amazing
things to say about him. And I really I appreciate
those words that that he said.
Speaker 1 (12:55):
All right, so let's move forward. Ryan Leonard as good
as advertised.
Speaker 2 (13:00):
I think he's awesome.
Speaker 3 (13:01):
I mean, then it, Joe's a tough league. He's never
even played a preseason game and he's kind of come
in four games and fit right in. I mean, he
he doesn't look out of place when I'm watching at least,
you know, I think he's making plays.
Speaker 2 (13:14):
I think he's throwing hits. I think he's getting in
guys faces.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
I think the points and stuff will come, and I think, no,
I think he's doing.
Speaker 2 (13:21):
A great job.
Speaker 3 (13:21):
I think he's exactly what we need in our lineup,
like a little spark and a little you know, kind
of like a water bug, energy type guy.
Speaker 2 (13:28):
And and uh, I think he's fitting fantastic.
Speaker 1 (13:31):
The next two weeks. That's all that's left in the
regular season, and then obviously we're in the playoffs and
everything's fine. What is there is there a feeling within
the team what what what has to be sharpened, what
has to be fine tuned over the next two weeks
to be ready for Round one.
Speaker 3 (13:50):
I think now that the kind of the chase is over,
I think it's it's time to really really you know,
dial it in and get our game, you know, back
to where it was kind of you know mid season
there for a little bit, kind of maybe just after
the midway point and kind of towards the second half
where we really started to pick it up and went
on you know, like I think we were like fifteen
and two in the seventeen games and try to get
back to that heading into the playoffs. I think we
(14:10):
have a confident team and a team that can play
a bunch of different ways, and you know, I'm pretty
confident that we can find that for the last five
games and just get feeling good about ourselves, feeling good
about that. The power players picked it up over the
last three or four games, so that's good. That's a
good sign. I think the short of our defensive game
a little bit now, giving up so many chances, not
play as much running gun and kind of, you know,
(14:31):
lock it in and start getting ready for the big
stuff here.
Speaker 1 (14:34):
Next up is Thursday night we take on the Carolina Hurricanes.
I don't have to remind you the third period the
last time a week ago when we played I believe
it was one hundred and twenty two penalty minutes in
the in the third period. Would a betting man expect
something coming up on Thursday, I don't know.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
I don't know. We'll see what happens.
Speaker 3 (14:54):
Hockey is a game where you know, everyone's pretty emotional
in the moment, and we were getting beat pretty bad,
and sometimes things happen in hockey games.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
So I'm not sure what to expect.
Speaker 3 (15:04):
Uh, you know, I'm not much of a I'm not
much of a scrap or fighter myself. But no, I
think we're obviously, we really want to focus on getting,
you know, playing the right way going to the playoffs.
I think you know, there's a time and place for
for that kind of stuff. And and you know, a
lot happened already on the last game. So the hockey
is a game, like I said, where things aren't really
(15:25):
planned out like that to kind of just you know,
we're gonna go into the game hoping to play really well,
hoping to win, and we'll see what happens from there.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
I'll bet Chatfield eat somebody's fists on Thursday night, last thing.
And I'm sure it doesn't matter whoever ends up in
wildcard too, whether it's Montreal, uh New York, whoever, whoever's
gonna end up in that last slot, Well it.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
Matter to you guys.
Speaker 1 (15:46):
You guys will go in and do your whole thing,
or do you start thinking about that.
Speaker 2 (15:51):
I think you know, obviously you keep an eye on it.
I think.
Speaker 3 (15:56):
You know, there's a lot of great teams and you
know the thing is with those teams is they're fighting
like every game for them now is a playoff game.
So we're gonna have to be our sharpest because you know,
they're gonna be, you know, the most ready of all
the teams going in whoever wins that last spot, because
like I said that, those games for them are all
are all important right now, and so they're playing playoff hockey.
So I think that's that's something that we've got to
(16:17):
be aware of over these last five games of who
we're going to play and knowing that they're gonna be,
you know, firing already on all cylinders.
Speaker 1 (16:23):
Caps take on the Hurricanes Thursday night and then a
home and home Saturday and Sunday against the Columbus Blue Jackets. Dylan, congratulations, dude.
Speaker 2 (16:31):
I had so much fun.
Speaker 1 (16:32):
Obviously watching everything happen, but I did. I had a
blast watching you over the weekend.
Speaker 2 (16:36):
It was great. I appreciate that. Thank you very much
having me on Elliott. I appreciate it.
