Speaker 1 (00:00):
Can somebody explain to me or maybe I'm just incapable
of wrapping my head around it.
Speaker 2 (00:05):
The ATM Jack Potting story.
Speaker 3 (00:08):
Yeah, I had. I had also difficulty in understanding it.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
Here's here's here's so there's.
Speaker 3 (00:14):
Like like, explain it to me, like I'm four.
Speaker 4 (00:17):
You know.
Speaker 2 (00:18):
So they they they they hit a ATM. They being
some bad.
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Guys, and they've got good shots of them.
Speaker 1 (00:26):
Who does the one guy in the car kind of
remind you of on the driver's side. So these two
guys end up robbing one hundred and seventy five thousand
dollars from an ATM I think at Fairfax, right, and.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
You see them.
Speaker 1 (00:40):
Well I'll get to the story in a second, but
they have video of them as they were at the
they're in the car at the ATM.
Speaker 3 (00:47):
You want me to pull it up to yeah, place
the person.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
Now it's not this spitting image.
Speaker 3 (00:53):
Is this the guy in like the neon shirt.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
The Yeah, it's got like a hoodie on or something
like that. Who I'm talking about. He's one of the
wanted guys.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
I assumed if he was a part of the heist.
Speaker 2 (01:06):
And again you'll see it and maybe you won't get it.
Right away. But you'll see it and go, oh, I
get the resemblance.
Speaker 3 (01:12):
Okay, here we go.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
No, they got to be in the cardio there he is.
Speaker 3 (01:20):
Okay, who is that?
Speaker 2 (01:22):
Yeah? Who is that?
Speaker 1 (01:23):
Quick glance, quick glance. Oh no that's good. But no
quick glance. Yeah, no, Diane, Maybe a little.
Speaker 2 (01:38):
Quick glance, quick glance. It's Menino. Anyway.
Speaker 1 (01:42):
Anyway, thieves robbed a bank of one hundred and seventy
five thousand dollars through a high tech scheme known as jackpotting.
Speaker 2 (01:50):
Fine.
Speaker 1 (01:51):
They're believed to have gotten the ATM to spew out
cash like they had a jackpot on a slot machine.
Speaker 2 (01:56):
I'm following you all through that.
Speaker 1 (01:58):
The thieves collected the cash for about thirty minutes without
ever inserting a card, according to police, Instead, one of
the suspects held a phone toward the ATM. Fine, So
I hear that. I go, Okay, nobody broke in. Nobody
used the key. They use something on their phone. Yeah,
here's where I fall off. Here's where I fall off.
(02:21):
Hours earlier, someone opened it with a key. Hackers then
installed a mallware, a virtual black box into some of
the ATMs, and then using a USB driver or other
electronic devices they're able to return at a later date,
and basically what they call jackpot the ATM.
Speaker 2 (02:41):
I understand that. I also have an idea. When you
open the ATM, just steal the money money. I don't
understand why it was like.
Speaker 1 (02:50):
Or does this just allow them to go back whenever
they want and steal the money. But if you have
the key that opens the ATM, go back whenever you
want it.
Speaker 3 (03:00):
If they have the key, it some sort of inside job.
So he was maybe he is, you know that.
Speaker 2 (03:05):
I don't know, Well, how would you have a key?
Speaker 1 (03:07):
Someone approached the Apple Federal Credit Union at their drive
up ATM in the forty two hundred block of Members Way.
Speaker 2 (03:15):
In far Oaks, Fine. They used a key to open
the machine.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
It remains unclear what actions were taken once it was accessed.
The same person returned in a blue late model jeep
about two hours later and opened the ATM again. Less
than an hour after that, that person and a second
person arrived in the same jeep and accessed the machine
(03:40):
for about fifteen minutes while appearing to record it on
their phones.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
They opened it again.
Speaker 1 (03:47):
They've now opened the machine three times then forty five
minutes later, someone in the jeep return and began withdrawing
cash without inserting a car or touching the ATM.
Speaker 2 (03:58):
He held the.
Speaker 1 (03:59):
Phone toward the machine, and then the machine started spitting
out cash. I get that, But why do I keep
going back? I've already opened the machine three times.
Speaker 5 (04:10):
So your confusion is not related to jackpotting as a
hacking crime. Correct, And we've because we've talked about jackpotting
in the past. You don't understand why they're not striking
when it looks like you should take the money, then
(04:31):
I just empty it out.
Speaker 2 (04:32):
I get that.
Speaker 1 (04:33):
You put something in that ATM, right, something in there.
I don't know what the system is, but you put
something in there. You found a way to get something
in there that allows you using your phone to access
the ATM and make it spit out cash.
Speaker 2 (04:48):
I get that. I don't know.
Speaker 1 (04:49):
I don't understand what that thing is. And if you
told me that you had to get in once to
put that item in there, whatever that transponder is, whatever
it is, if you had to get in there once
and then using your phone, you could do it forever.
Speaker 2 (05:07):
That would be great. I'd go to the ATM every
day and empty it out.
Speaker 1 (05:12):
I just don't understand why they had to open the
ATM three times before getting it to work.
Speaker 5 (05:20):
Did the device not set itself up properly? Was it
not working how they needed it to work?
Speaker 1 (05:26):
So you think on that second time it was supposed
to work and they were like, it's not working. Open it,
and so they had to do that three times before
it worked.
Speaker 5 (05:35):
Maybe I'm trying to get it because you're right, if
you're inside.
Speaker 2 (05:39):
Steal the money. Yeah, I'm huh that's already opened.
Speaker 5 (05:43):
Or is any separate compartment within the ATM? Are there
two barriers to that?
Speaker 2 (05:50):
Oh? So there's like an outer door in an inner door. Oh?
I that I don't know. And you know what? You
know who? And I hate to call him out. I
hate to call.
Speaker 1 (05:59):
Him out, but I almost I'm a text yesterday because
I was watching the news Steve, Yeah, miss you Menino
you rob a bank?
Speaker 2 (06:08):
No no, no.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
The news guy who did the story I was watching
Channel four is Drew Wilder.
Speaker 2 (06:15):
Drew's fantastic, And I was yelling.
Speaker 1 (06:17):
At the TV Drew, I don't understand a goddamn thing
you're saying, Like, explain, why do we have to keep
opening up the ATM over and over and over again,
and then they made such a big deal about like, oh,
and now they're.
Speaker 2 (06:31):
Just getting money out of it.
Speaker 1 (06:33):
Like I feel like they missed three opportunities to do that.
You know, when they had the ATM open.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
Are you saying Drew didn't asked the right questions or.
Speaker 1 (06:44):
He didn't report the story right, Like this isn't going
to get him a capital Emmy? But is he.
Speaker 5 (06:51):
Working with the police. Was he not told to reveal
certain details?
Speaker 6 (06:58):
No?
Speaker 2 (06:58):
I don't think so. I mean I just found the detail.
Speaker 3 (07:01):
Have you never been asked that by law enforcement? Yeah?
Speaker 1 (07:04):
But so you think they went to Drew and they
were like, hey, don't say don't say any of these details.
Speaker 2 (07:10):
And so Drew's listening right now, going goddamn it, I
got scooped. No, like you should know this. So they
went back three times and opened the machine.
Speaker 3 (07:23):
You have asked quite a few questions yourself.
Speaker 5 (07:25):
Yes, but we could get answers from different sides of
not this specific specific story, but different sides of banking,
maintenance and obviously the cops.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
Yeah, that's okay. I'll take any answers right now. I
have none.
Speaker 3 (07:43):
Oh, you're like Drew Wilder.
Speaker 2 (07:49):
Where am I going? Kristen Line four, Hi Elliet the morning.
Hey Elliott, Hey, what's going on? Dude?
Speaker 6 (07:59):
No, So I used to work on ATM machines. They
have a safe inside of the ATM. So it's depending
on the company. It's different kinds of blocks that you
have to get permission.
Speaker 1 (08:16):
To get into.
Speaker 6 (08:17):
So just because you open the door to the ATM,
you have no access to the money.
Speaker 2 (08:22):
Okay, all right, that great answer.
Speaker 1 (08:24):
Do you have to do that three times to get
access to the money? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (08:31):
I feel like what you were saying before that the
the whatever system they put in there did not work,
so they went back and they were fixing it, but
they were they never gain access to the money, so
they couldn't have just taken that while they were there,
so they had to configure that to spit the money
out for them.
Speaker 2 (08:53):
So you're telling me, Okay, so I understand that.
Speaker 1 (08:55):
So there's the ATM and then there's the safe, and
so just because I could get into the ATM, I
may not be able to get into the safe.
Speaker 2 (09:04):
Okay, that makes sense.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
And so you're you're telling me that the transponder, the
transponder that I'm using, let's just call it that. I
don't know what the device is, isn't in the right place,
so it's not triggering the safe. So they have to
keep moving it around like like it like they're trying
to find the stud in the wall.
Speaker 6 (09:24):
Yeah, I basically they're they were trying to hook it up.
There's I mean, it's a pretty complex machine with a
lot of stuff. If they had to wire it in,
they could have done it wrong the first.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Couple of times.
Speaker 2 (09:34):
Okay, then you know what, that makes a little more sense.
Speaker 5 (09:37):
And then very honest person to any how manybody says,
yeah I work on ATMs.
Speaker 3 (09:41):
I'm like, you're you're honest.
Speaker 2 (09:42):
Yeah, no, no, that's very good. Oh I couldn't work
on ATM. I'd steal them every day.
Speaker 1 (09:47):
And by the way, and then and then Drew gets
all goody goody on.
Speaker 2 (09:50):
The report, what do you mean because they were talking.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
About no, no, nobody with an account had their money stolen, right,
But Drew's like, well just because no, well it's not victimless,
it's you know, they took the bank's money.
Speaker 2 (10:03):
Like what woul Drew's kissing ass on big bank?
Speaker 3 (10:06):
Oh, get him a junior sheriff.
Speaker 2 (10:07):
Bat Oh see what am I looking at there?
Speaker 5 (10:13):
Somebody wanted you to see how complex the inside of
an ATM is.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
That's pretty complex. I'll give you that.
Speaker 3 (10:19):
There's a lot going on.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
That guy's got zens in his pocket, Like you.
Speaker 5 (10:22):
Could open it for me, and I could have the
black box or whatever type of device they used for
the malware, and I still.
Speaker 2 (10:29):
You wouldn't find couldn't do this.
Speaker 5 (10:30):
I'll tell you what I'd have better elect trying to
get into the safe with the money.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
I was gonna say, I don't know where the safe
is in there, but if I got that far into
the opening of an ATM like a rat, I would
chew through every piece.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Of equipment to get to that money. I couldn't get
that close and not walk away with money.
Speaker 1 (10:47):
Well, you know you're looking at one hundred and seventy
five thousand dollars right there.
Speaker 3 (10:52):
So did they max out the ATM?
Speaker 2 (10:53):
I don't know. Ask Drew. He didn't know. Line one.
Speaker 4 (11:02):
Hi the morning, Hey guys, what's going on? Man? I'm
gonna remain a little anonymous, but I am an aten technician.
Speaker 2 (11:09):
Oh yes, sir, so was that last guy right? Does
that last guy make sense to you? Yeah?
Speaker 4 (11:15):
It does. Make sense because you know, getting into the
into the first part of it, that's the easy part.
I mean, you know, you can make copies of us
a seed and you know, and getting get passed up part.
But once you get I mean that's that's that's that's easy.
But what but you still got to get into the
actual safe, which is you know, which is the next
to the main part. So and and even if you
(11:37):
were to try to even trying to get into that,
I mean, the you know, the combination on those things
change every every like every every time it's opened open,
So I mean, yeah, so that's what that's probably why
they have to pay.
Speaker 1 (11:51):
So you think they went back and had to they
had to open it up three four times in order
to get whatever the device in there to work to
trigger the same all right.
Speaker 4 (12:01):
Right, because I mean because yeah, because because what's what's
what's on the outside of the safe, well, on the
main screen whatever, it's like the computer and that's and
that's that sort of thing.
Speaker 2 (12:10):
So you know, so two things. Number one, I bet
people don't know that.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
So I would be afraid to just be a technician
because I would think if I went to the bank
and I just opened it up. People would be like
ATMs opened, get up, you know what I mean, Like
they would come charging that.
Speaker 4 (12:27):
Well that well, that did happen to me at one time,
so only once. But yeah yeah.
Speaker 2 (12:32):
Also by the way, I mean, I.
Speaker 1 (12:36):
Don't know what you do for a living now, but
if you want a job at Channel four, you explained
it much better than Drew Wilder.
Speaker 4 (12:43):
I keep that you can work for and CBS six.
Speaker 2 (12:47):
Oh there you go.
Speaker 1 (12:49):
I could get your job working with Macy Moores maybe
and get her to like, get her goddamn Instagram opened
up for me again.
Speaker 3 (12:54):
Make it private again.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
I don't know, I haven't checked. Thank you, sir, thank you.
Let's see. I'm all right. Oh oh no, it's it's
public again. Yes, oh she's got a story.
Speaker 3 (13:04):
I am.
Speaker 1 (13:05):
I know, I know, somebody please do it.
Speaker 5 (13:08):
By the way, I see the part you're talking about
Andrew's report about ordinary Americans being hurt by this.
Speaker 1 (13:14):
Oh yeah, you see it where he's like, oh, it's
not victim. Was like, all of a sudden, he's running
from mother Teresa.
Speaker 5 (13:21):
Affects ability to obtain loans and be lent money.
Speaker 1 (13:26):
Okay, is Drew the only parton like if he found
a bag of money laying on the ground, he'd be like, well,
I can't touch.
Speaker 5 (13:32):
That can play into the interest rates, can affect corporate
insurance policies.
Speaker 3 (13:40):
So it's the consumers hurt by these crimes. Thank you, Drew.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
Back to you.
Speaker 5 (13:45):
It might not be the money directly from your bank account,
but that doesn't mean you aren't paying for these crimes.
Speaker 3 (13:54):
Thank you, thank you.
Speaker 1 (13:59):
Oh three uh, Hey, Drew Wilder, Hi am calling in
to collect my junior sheriff bade.
Speaker 3 (14:11):
It's actually just a sticker. It's not a real badge.
It's just a sticker.
Speaker 7 (14:16):
Love stickers, love stickers.
Speaker 1 (14:19):
Hey, So I had some callers clean up your story
for you.
Speaker 7 (14:24):
That's super kind of you and them. I admit I
didn't catch much other than the last few minutes, but
it sounds like there's enough in the last few minutes
to talk about.
Speaker 1 (14:33):
So yes, well, I didn't understand, Drew, because I was
watching the story.
Speaker 2 (14:39):
I was watching you and you were doing.
Speaker 1 (14:42):
The story, and all I know is these guys are
opening the machine up three four times before.
Speaker 2 (14:47):
They got the money. It doesn't make any sense.
Speaker 1 (14:50):
So why would you open the machine up three or
four times and just not steal the money, and I
was like, Drew didn't explain it.
Speaker 2 (14:56):
He just whatever, He just glossed right over the whole thing.
He doesn't ask questions.
Speaker 7 (15:02):
Well, I apologized that I didn't explain it well enough
for you to execute one. I mean, look, yes, you could.
I have gotten a little bit more into how to.
Sure sometimes with these stories, like I mean, I'm not
building a how to program, and I guess, you know,
maybe I left a little bit hanging out there. But
like when you get into some of the.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
By the way, you're a patsy for the police. You're
a patsy for the police.
Speaker 7 (15:25):
Okay, no, hang on a second. The entire point, the
entire point that is unfair criticism.
Speaker 2 (15:36):
I'll stand up for my phone there.
Speaker 5 (15:37):
I don't think, well, I not know what what what
term is not a patsy as someone who's like set up,
Yeah no, but like.
Speaker 2 (15:45):
He won't give out the right information. What is that?
Speaker 3 (15:51):
Not a patsy?
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Oh, I don't know. Scratch that, Drew, Yeah, scratch that.
You're not a patsy.
Speaker 7 (15:56):
I mean the entire point of allowing the police officer,
not me, to explain the damage is because ninety nine
point nine percent of us sitting at home. We're going
to hear that story and say that's the bank who cares?
You know, but there is some damage there, right, Like,
do you really think that any bank, whether it's this
particular credit union or another bank, is going to lose
(16:17):
one hundred and seventy hundred and seventy five thousand dollars
and they're gonna be like, so, what like, is somebody
not going Is it ultimately not going to fall in
the consumers back? Do you genuinely believe that it's not
going to.
Speaker 2 (16:27):
Go through insurance?
Speaker 7 (16:28):
Insurance rates are going to go up something like, It's
not It's never going to be the bank that loses, right.
I think our country has established that fairly well.
Speaker 5 (16:36):
So, Drew, I have not paid for the bank, Drew,
Not one teriff here has been paid for by me.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
The uh, he's not.
Speaker 2 (16:52):
One person not laughing, Drew.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
It is no way to treat a special constable.
Speaker 2 (17:00):
Drew's do I get a gun? Okay?
Speaker 1 (17:04):
No, but listen, there's nothing to be upset about. I
just had listeners fill in your blanks.
Speaker 2 (17:08):
It's fine, that's kind of you, elliot.
Speaker 3 (17:11):
I always appreciate that.
Speaker 2 (17:13):
Absolutely.
Speaker 1 (17:13):
Hey, how about a like but I was watching and
when you were like ninety nine point nine percent on
the point one percent, Drew, No, no, no, you care.
Speaker 7 (17:23):
That the bank lost money or that would be a
thing that you were worried about.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
No, I couldn't care less that the banks and your
interest rates are going up. Your interest rates are going up?
Speaker 3 (17:38):
Oh, Elliott.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
Anyway, I enjoyed the report last night.
Speaker 7 (17:47):
Oh my god, thank you so much for highlighting it.
Speaker 2 (17:49):
I appreciate that your loyal viewer.
Speaker 7 (17:52):
And I appreciate that, and your criticism is always.
Speaker 4 (17:56):
Welcome.
Speaker 1 (17:57):
I guess, Okay, don't be mad, don't be don't be angry.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
I'm not mad.
Speaker 7 (18:03):
I'm not angry. I'm sorry if I came across that way.
Speaker 5 (18:06):
We kid because we care about informing the public.
Speaker 7 (18:11):
I appreciate that you guys are doing a great public service,
and I'm serious about that.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Constable stick right, all right, very good. What are you
working on today?
Speaker 4 (18:21):
Uh?
Speaker 7 (18:22):
You know what? Tune in at four, five and six.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
All right, Drew, good talking to you. See you guys,
have a good one by any buddy, talk to you later.
Speaker 4 (18:31):
We'll we beg
Speaker 5 (18:34):
You know why I think he's mad because he realizes
we're not joking.
