Speaker 1 (00:00):
Hey, have we ever heard of these places? Or has
somebody heard of these places?
Speaker 2 (00:06):
They are referred to as private members only clubs that
are starting to pop up all over the place. And
when I say that, let me back off for one second.
I'm not talking about country clubs. I'm not talking about
like golf clubs where you would think of like those
are real expensive to join, and then you have like
(00:26):
all those monthly fees. These still you have to join,
there's a member's fee, but it sounds like they're much
more social.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
Oh, because my first thought was like a hunting club,
which is a weird first.
Speaker 2 (00:38):
Thought for you to say, Why would that even cross
your mind?
Speaker 4 (00:41):
No?
Speaker 5 (00:41):
No, no, no, But just that one that was in
McLain on top of like the wasn't there one at.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
The that's a speakeasy.
Speaker 5 (00:50):
That's a speakeas this goes back aways though, I thought
that was a private club.
Speaker 2 (00:54):
Oh oh, I'm sorry. I thought you were thinking of
the place at Wren. No, no, you're talking about it
was like it by the rent, don't wasn't it in
that the shopping bag building, that brown shopping bag building.
Speaker 1 (01:06):
Wasn't it on the top floor of that?
Speaker 6 (01:09):
Yes?
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Yes, yes, yes, very But was that a private club?
Speaker 4 (01:14):
Thought?
Speaker 5 (01:15):
So it was, yeah, I thought it was like for
for all the like it was a private restaurant all
the rich people.
Speaker 3 (01:21):
Sounds like not what Elliott's describing.
Speaker 2 (01:23):
Yeah, no, no, no, this one is the way that
this is being explained. And I'm just I'm scanning something
because they said that there's one They mentioned one common House,
a chain of private clubs that first opened in Charlottesville, Virginia,
and has added locations in Richmond, Chattanooga, and New Orleans.
Speaker 3 (01:46):
I see their website right here.
Speaker 2 (01:48):
So it looks like it is like a restaurant bar,
and like, is I don't what do I call it
a social place?
Speaker 3 (01:59):
Well that sounds like how an alien?
Speaker 1 (02:01):
Which is no.
Speaker 2 (02:03):
No, but it's like but it's like people are just
sitting around and stuff.
Speaker 3 (02:08):
I've never heard of this just as a chain, Like
you said, well it's a small chain.
Speaker 2 (02:13):
Okay, yeah, but that that's that's not really a chain.
Speaker 3 (02:16):
Modern comfortable escapes for social and business pursuits.
Speaker 2 (02:21):
Oh well, that's the other thing they said that a
lot of people will use them for is like let's say,
for example, Well, here's the other thing. Private clubs are
often cheaper and easier to join than a traditional country club,
golf club, beach club.
Speaker 1 (02:38):
All added hunting club and that people will join.
Speaker 2 (02:43):
So there is there is a fee, but what could
be like some country aren't some country clubs to join
tens and tens and tens and tens of thousands of dollars,
and then there's minimals and then there's like you got to.
Speaker 4 (02:55):
Spend you have to pay every month.
Speaker 1 (02:57):
Like thousands of dollars a month food and right.
Speaker 2 (03:00):
Yeah, so they say, like at a lot of these
other like these smaller private clubs, that it is it
may be one thousand dollars or two thousand dollars to join,
and you may have to spend two hundred dollars a month.
But they said for a lot of people, like like
you said, for business, some people will do it where
(03:22):
they know like let's say, for example, I want to
take a client out and I'm looking to kind of
what's that line, and I'm going to grease smooth kids
that I might take them there because it's private, so
it looks foo foo.
Speaker 1 (03:37):
They know me, so I look important.
Speaker 3 (03:41):
So it's a little more you know, it's a little
more intimate. Yeah, my guests are allowed. That's not a
big deal.
Speaker 1 (03:48):
Yeah, I mean I could bring I you could, yeah,
and you can bring a guest.
Speaker 3 (03:51):
Or it's like a pool where you only get a
certain amount of passes.
Speaker 1 (03:53):
Oh don't. I don't know the answer to that.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
The website says, it's funny. The first thing that listen
is that coffee is always on tap Ooh.
Speaker 1 (04:01):
I like that.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
You were just stopping in for a cup.
Speaker 2 (04:04):
I would if I was paying, if I had to
pay a membership fee.
Speaker 1 (04:08):
Yeah, I'm stopping in for coffee.
Speaker 3 (04:09):
Like you mentioned, there is the private restaurant with seasonal menus,
daily programs and events at concierge, in house simelier and
open coworking and meeting spaces with amenities unique to each location.
Speaker 2 (04:28):
So I do like the idea of like they're being
like like, let's say workspaces, Like, there's something pretty good
about that. And then they said some of them will
host like and by the way, so the reason this
pops up is they were saying that people are these
are starting to open.
Speaker 1 (04:44):
Like when you think of this, you would think like, oh,
New York, LA, I'm out.
Speaker 7 (04:50):
Boston, the yeah, maybe Boston, Chicago, Chicago, but that they're
they're starting to move to places where I don't want
to say you wouldn't exp them, but maybe you wouldn't
expect them.
Speaker 2 (05:03):
So let me ask you this, Savannah, No common house
by the way. They Oh, yeah, these are just other ones.
Speaker 1 (05:10):
Where where's the where's the joint where your parents live? Greenville?
Speaker 3 (05:15):
Where's the Yeah? I mean the city they live in Simpsonville,
but they live in Greenville.
Speaker 1 (05:20):
South Carolina. Yeah, I don't.
Speaker 2 (05:21):
I don't know the name of it, but they there's
one just opened there Allbany, New York, The Greenhouse Social Club,
sushi bar, DJ's rooftop restaurant. I mean, what's more beautiful
than sitting on the roof and overlooking Albany.
Speaker 3 (05:37):
But my question is, let's take people may be familiar
with common House Richmond, yes one. Are you allowed to
talk about it?
Speaker 1 (05:46):
Why not?
Speaker 3 (05:47):
Is it supposed to be kind of like a secret society?
Speaker 8 (05:49):
No?
Speaker 1 (05:50):
Get at it here? You know, why why wouldn't we
You know?
Speaker 5 (05:52):
If I common there's exclusivity to it.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
No, yeah, yes there is.
Speaker 2 (05:58):
But if I down common I'd be like, tell everybody,
why wouldn't you want more?
Speaker 1 (06:01):
Get more members?
Speaker 3 (06:02):
Well, then my second question was would people pass by
these buildings or rentedly spaces without having any idea is
there signage or are they supposed to be somewhat nondescript?
Speaker 2 (06:14):
I think the Camel Club, which is another one I
was reading about, is inside of a hotel restaurant, like
like a hotel area, but it's for them, so I
don't want to say it's like a private room, but
(06:36):
it's its own separate area.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
So common House Richmond's right down the street from Quirk.
Speaker 1 (06:43):
Oh is it really?
Speaker 3 (06:44):
And I'm trying to see on street view what the
exterior looks like. God, damn it. What side of the
street was it on? I got to research it all right,
all right, I got here.
Speaker 1 (06:56):
But that's not bad. Oh wait where am I going?
Line three? Oh? Hey, real quick? What is the name
of this one? Common house? Are there?
Speaker 2 (07:05):
But so common House just gets ridden up? That's the
only reason I know about it. Are there others?
Speaker 1 (07:10):
Like?
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Are there a bunch that we don't know about? Are
there a bunch in DC?
Speaker 4 (07:13):
I wouldn't doubt it.
Speaker 1 (07:15):
What are they? When I say DC, I mean like
the area?
Speaker 4 (07:18):
Yeah, the area metropolitan area? Yeah, yeah, of course.
Speaker 2 (07:22):
But again I'm not talking about Washington Golf in Avenel
and Congressional, and I can't name any others.
Speaker 4 (07:32):
If they're in Richmond and Charlottesville, they're one D.
Speaker 1 (07:34):
They have to be, Yeah, they have to be.
Speaker 3 (07:35):
But then may a group from these places go out
and do things like play golf or play tennis.
Speaker 1 (07:42):
You can do whatever you want. You want to go
play golf, Go play golf.
Speaker 3 (07:45):
Don't test me.
Speaker 1 (07:46):
No, you know what I mean.
Speaker 2 (07:47):
It's like, oh, you're a member of common House. You
may never golf again. What is common house care? Pay
your dues?
Speaker 3 (07:56):
I don't see anything that would indicate that this is
a a is it?
Speaker 1 (08:02):
Is it? Sh is? It? Like on a need to know?
Speaker 3 (08:08):
But there's something kind of without being like so ridiculously
uh secretive about it. There's something fun about only those
in the no knowing. But I understand you also want
the advertising.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
Yeah, I want people to know.
Speaker 3 (08:25):
Did they cat membership? Do you have to wait? Is
their waiting list?
Speaker 1 (08:27):
I don't work there. I have no idea. I have
no clue.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
You get all the answers.
Speaker 2 (08:34):
No, No, but you know what, like like you know
what would be cool like if let's say we owned
one right, we own Elliott and the Wall and we
have our place like to do like Sunday night, right,
Like you want to be able to have dinner and
all this other stuff, you know, blah blah blah. Sunday
night during football season, it's special Sunday night cigars and whiskey.
Speaker 1 (08:58):
Right, you can smoke in there. I don't know if
you can, but why not? It's private. I smoke in
my house. I don't, but I could. It's private.
Speaker 3 (09:10):
But you you also can't run in and take over
the place. There's other members.
Speaker 1 (09:15):
Well that's what I'm saying. You would make it for
that night. Oh so you would.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
I would space within the space.
Speaker 1 (09:21):
No, no, I theme my place that night.
Speaker 3 (09:23):
Oh this is if you're the owner.
Speaker 1 (09:25):
Yeah yeah, Where am I going?
Speaker 4 (09:28):
Like do for hockey? So again, what do you do
for hockey games? Well you can't, You're I'm in the
arena the Yeah.
Speaker 1 (09:33):
Why am I watching it there? Why would I just
be in my seats?
Speaker 3 (09:36):
They do entertainment, I see that.
Speaker 1 (09:37):
Yeah. Oh yeah, like sometimes they'll get like a like.
Speaker 4 (09:39):
A band, well yeah, yeah, singer songwriter type thing.
Speaker 1 (09:44):
I don't know. I mean it depends on the club.
Where am I going? Line three? Hi Elliott in the morning, Hi,
good morning.
Speaker 8 (09:52):
My name's Terrisa and I work at common House.
Speaker 1 (09:54):
Wow, thanks for the welcome. You're really excited.
Speaker 8 (10:00):
I am really excited. It's not too often I get
to talk about common House in a situation like this.
Speaker 6 (10:06):
A friend of my.
Speaker 8 (10:06):
Messaged to me and was like, talking about common House
do you have to radio or you have to call in?
Hey it?
Speaker 1 (10:13):
Let me ask you this, Let me ask you this,
all the questions, is it real?
Speaker 3 (10:16):
Like?
Speaker 1 (10:16):
Is it is? It? Is it real? Private? So?
Speaker 3 (10:22):
Yes?
Speaker 8 (10:22):
But so let me tell you. Can I give you
my steel yeah, and help you know, either confirm or
debunk some of the things you guys are talking about.
Speaker 1 (10:31):
Sure, go ahead, great, all right.
Speaker 8 (10:33):
We're membership base, yes, but the membership base is also
you know, when you compare to other places like country
clubs and even midside social clubs, the barrier to entry
is pretty low, and we encourage guests, right, We actually
want you to bring your destin. You just have to
be with a member to come in.
Speaker 2 (10:51):
Yeah, right, because than that person, then that person wants
to become a member.
Speaker 8 (10:57):
You but then also like the member, It kind of
makes you feel cool and a little special, like, look,
this is my private club and I'm gonna come, I'm
gonna bring you in and let's get drinks and let's
get dinner. I have a movie theater in the basement,
a twenty person movie theater, and so that's an amenity.
We have a pool on the roof, a rooftop bar. Yeah,
(11:18):
and you know it's truly the barrier to entry is
really low. I mean, we're not talking like Commonwealths Club
or Country Club of Virginia. It's we want people who
want to meet other people. Do you know what the
largest epidemic in the world is loneliness? Yes, it is,
and is we continue to get more digital and by
(11:40):
the way, is through a phone.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
Now. I know a lot of people are like, oh god,
stop her the no, but say one of the things
that one of the things that they talk about is
how number one and you're right, it is really good
for curing like people like this is a chance to
go out meet people who are like you and you know.
Speaker 1 (11:59):
Are part of the our part of your.
Speaker 2 (12:00):
Club and your community. And it's a good chance to
go out. And even if you just sit there and
have a couple of drinks, you're going to run into
them at your private club.
Speaker 1 (12:11):
Exactly.
Speaker 8 (12:13):
We have people of all ages from We are twenty
one and use only, and we have people that are
in their mid twenties all the way to their seventies.
It's a really nice variety of people. And you never
know if it's a future business partner you meet, just
a future friend that you grab a cup of coffee with.
You might not meet anybody, and you just want to
use a space to do your work and maybe work
(12:34):
on schoolwork which you're getting your masters. You run your
business from there. Richmond specifically has private offices as well,
So I will say my Richmond club has a larger
amount of the coworking and business crowd right, which is
awesome because we have a lot of activity throughout the day.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
And the other thing, by the way you know your stuff,
the average the average age of somebody joining one of
these club not just yours in Richmond, but like Albany
and Greenville. I don't remember the places I named twenty
five to fifty.
Speaker 8 (13:10):
My average age in Richmond is forty one.
Speaker 2 (13:13):
Oh there you go, Hey, Can I ask you some
you like Either you're the most proud employee and you
keep calling it my or are you a manager?
Speaker 1 (13:21):
Do you run the joint?
Speaker 8 (13:24):
I do and director of operations.
Speaker 2 (13:26):
Oh d os ye no no doo do do the
Oh good for you.
Speaker 8 (13:33):
I literally just do stuff often a lot of times
behind the scenes. I have an incredible team that helped
make the place magical each and every day. But again,
a friend of mine texted me and was like, oh
my gosh, Trisha, they're talking, so.
Speaker 3 (13:46):
This is great.
Speaker 6 (13:47):
How much that actually chat?
Speaker 1 (13:48):
How much? How much is it?
Speaker 8 (13:52):
One eighty five a month? And we actually have an
open house coming up this Friday where if you sign
up on Friday, come in check the place out. If
you love it, you want to be a member. We're
waiving the five hundred dollars initiation.
Speaker 2 (14:07):
So wait so to join as five hundred dollars correct,
and then it's one hundred and eighty five dollars a month.
Speaker 8 (14:16):
Correct. And there is no food and beverage minimum. Like
most private clubs. You can come in and just do
work and get a cup of coffee and that's awesome.
We want you here, We have space for you.
Speaker 1 (14:28):
I spend more than that on door Dash.
Speaker 3 (14:30):
That's true. It looks like on the Google listing here
do you host a lot of weddings?
Speaker 8 (14:38):
We do, in addition to being a members club. We
are also a private event venue. We've been voted in
some of the top wedding venue lists that come out
and I think Style Style Weekly or Richmond mag it
was one of them best party venue. But weddings engagement ins.
That's awesome, hey, and exactly if you're a member though,
(15:02):
it's we do that for everybody, but if you're a member,
it's cheaper. We want you to have perked.
Speaker 2 (15:07):
Hey, is there is there anybody like like local famous
that's a member.
Speaker 1 (15:13):
I can't tell you what privacy what about Mason?
Speaker 8 (15:17):
I can't tell you that the local celebrities. You have
to come in and then just be surprised and delighted
when you're like, oh my gosh, that dude, that's amazing
for that gal. Pretty awesome.
Speaker 3 (15:29):
Ask it one more time, but sound even more pathetic.
Speaker 1 (15:31):
Hey, is is Macy a member?
Speaker 3 (15:35):
Emphasis?
Speaker 8 (15:36):
I can't pathetic?
Speaker 3 (15:40):
Asking is that?
Speaker 1 (15:42):
Maybe?
Speaker 3 (15:42):
Still feel bad for you?
Speaker 1 (15:44):
All right? Very good, very good. I'd like to come visit.
I'd like to come visit.
Speaker 8 (15:50):
I would love to have you come visit. You can
schedule a tour right online. You can reach out to
me directly. I'm just Tricia at Commonhouse dot com and
again we have this up in a house on Friday
from five thirty to eight thirty and it's open.
Speaker 2 (16:04):
Anything I got that, I got that I want to cut. Hey,
let me ask you this. I'm going to ask you
about one more person. And he said, if his name's
on the list, you can tell me.
Speaker 8 (16:12):
Bennett Zer, I can't tell you that actually on radio?
Speaker 1 (16:17):
What about Macy? All right? Very good, very good. Hold
on one second, hold on one second. By the way,
the rooftop bar, I'll say this, that rooftop bar is beautiful, beautiful.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
Do you see the pool as well?
Speaker 1 (16:26):
Yeah, it's great.
Speaker 3 (16:27):
It's a really nice space.
Speaker 1 (16:30):
That's my club. That's my private club. I'm not a member.
Speaker 3 (16:34):
That looks like they've got food for all different palettes.
Seven Diane could eat there with her picking nature.
Speaker 1 (16:44):
Hi, Jellie in the morning.
Speaker 6 (16:49):
Hey, good morning. How's it going.
Speaker 1 (16:50):
I'm doing great? Thank you? How are you?
Speaker 6 (16:53):
I'm blessed. This is a great day to have a
great day a man.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Brother, can't we see where this goes?
Speaker 1 (17:00):
Yeah? Yes, what can I do for you? Yeah?
Speaker 6 (17:04):
So I wanted to share some a ton of knowledge
and awareness around Black Iris Social Club, which is another
member based club downtown Richmond. We are also a member's
based social club, art gallery, performance venue, pretty much a
creat hub for think tanks for entrepreneurs. And I was
just going to give you a little bit more insight
(17:24):
into another opportunity for another chance. And we heard a
lot of good things here from common House and other clubs.
Speaker 1 (17:30):
Are you a director of operations? Were you like, Oh God,
damn that bitch, she beat me. No, I'm not.
Speaker 6 (17:38):
I have a huge team supporting me and a lot
of great talented individuals that continue to bring amazing talent
and amazing people and amazing opportunities to the local community.
Speaker 1 (17:48):
Hey, so can I ask you this?
Speaker 3 (17:49):
Wait, hold on one second, Yes, Tyler again, it's another
beautiful space. But are you like half a block from common.
Speaker 6 (17:56):
House exactly same street?
Speaker 3 (18:01):
The addresses are almost.
Speaker 1 (18:05):
So is this is this a like a are these
I don't know what to call them? Well, social clubs?
Is that is?
Speaker 2 (18:12):
Is that like?
Speaker 1 (18:13):
Is that a big boom and business in Richmond?
Speaker 6 (18:18):
I'd say you have the chance for opportunities and networking
that wouldn't traditionally exist otherwise, from holiday events to we
host a lot of legislative we're trying to push you know,
additional bills, and we support a lot of the local
legislation on both sides. It's five part is in all
the way down to weird. We have the facility as
(18:39):
a blockchain education institute, so it goes so much more
and further than just saying hey, I you know, I
got to meet some really cool entrepreneurs and we got
to create a thinking group that really pushes our business
but also has a working space but also a place
to relax as a cigar lounge co working like, we
have a really you know, ability to bring events or
(19:02):
say a master taster at a distiller would come and
host a private tasting event for our members, or you
could actually get in for free as a open event
that will host and then we'll have a more intimate
event private selections for the members. Now, one thing I'll
highlight too, which is really cool that a lot of
the local clubs is the art galleries we host. And
(19:24):
we host the art gallery the first Fridays is the
first Friday of each month. We change the art gallery
to represent our local artists and community and give them
a chance to express themselves and let people and all
that's free, so you walk in and you don't have
to have the membership access to come in and learn
a little bit more from the stand up comedy events
we'll host. Those are ticketed events, but when you are
(19:47):
a member, you have access to some of these where
you might not get as sure walking in.
Speaker 2 (19:51):
I get that now, dude, that's awesome. I think it's great.
By the way, the bar looks fantastic. The bar looks
really nice.
Speaker 6 (19:58):
That's a lot of what I've been up is I
hunt for a lot of the selections and stuff. We
try to keep it unique and always taking feedback from
our members. What would you like you know at the bar,
which special bourbons or special tequilas. We actually are hosting
courses even a lot of the things that we do,
we're hosting a somalier course where restaurants and other people
who might want to build additional skills or upskill their
(20:21):
current staff, or just have the opportunity to build.
Speaker 1 (20:24):
It's a whole new network.
Speaker 2 (20:26):
Like wait, when somebody, like if if somebody who works here,
like a salesperson, Like if you're Caruso.
Speaker 1 (20:32):
When you call a company and you're trying to sell yourself.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
Caruso probably sounds like, oh, we got commercials, we play songs.
Speaker 1 (20:41):
Oh oh, they do research. Howard started there.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
Uh yeah, these people are are like so buttoned up
and good, like you guys know what you're talking about. Hey,
let me ask you this is is is Macy Moore
as a member there?
Speaker 6 (21:02):
Like that before I can't all right, dude, Hey, I
appreciate it.
Speaker 1 (21:08):
Thank you, sir, Thank you. So the I like the
idea of them though, that kind of cool.
Speaker 3 (21:17):
It was funny though. I I literally had to flip
back and forth on the tabs because I was like,
are they in the same building? They're so close to
each other.
Speaker 1 (21:25):
That's pretty cool. That's very very cool.
Speaker 3 (21:28):
But you know what, it looks like happened, and I'm
happy to see it. As we know from all our
times visiting, and we've spent a lot of times we've
stayed on West broad there is a lot of property
that's empty. Yeah, so it looks like these places a
few years ago went in. Yeah, yeah, and they're like,
let's make a private club. Let's let's do something that's awesome.
Speaker 1 (21:50):
That's cool. I like it.
Speaker 3 (21:51):
Look at that.
Speaker 5 (21:51):
