(00:01):
Hey, welcome to another episode ofMini BTP where we just do a one
topic and a shorter amount of time. I'm Brandon Moleski, He's Pat Mcoletti.
We are continuing our vision for thedivision series and Pat, we're halfway
through the Central Division. Let's goto the top half from last season.
We'll talk about the Winnipeg Jets today. Another team that you know we've talked
(00:22):
with previous teams. Pat about kindof this change with a lot of these
old guards, with some of thesetop players. With Chicago, they're losing
Kane and Taves. That era isover, Saint Louis, the Terracinko and
O'Reilly era is over. Even evenNashville sent away Johansson and Duchane, and
Winnipeg's kind of in a similar boatwhere they release or wave Blake Wheeler.
(00:47):
There's been rumors all off season longabout Connor Hellabuck and Mark Schiffey. They
trade one of their top centers andPierre Luke Dubois. So another another team
that's kind of changing as we moveon here, or at least potentially changing
here with the Jets. Well, the whole key in my opinion, with
Winnipeg is what happens or doesn't happenwith Chiff Lane Hellibuck. If they keep
(01:15):
them, resign them, wait tillthe trade deadline, whatever. They have
a very sneaky good lineup with thetrade that they made with Dubois to the
Kings, and they get Valardi, who is a really you know, he's
kind of under the radar, buthe had a really really good year for
(01:38):
the Kings. And uh and Alexiafollow who you know, uh makes the
Kings, signs with them as afree agent, doesn't spend a day in
the miners and has been kind ofuh, you know, he played with
Copatar a lot in his years andwith the Kings, so he comes to
the Jets as a kind of aveteran and now and so if you look
(02:01):
at their lineup top to bottom,it's really really balanced. And and I
know for years we've talked about theirdefensive corps and uh, you know how
it's it's you know, boy,if they could only add that defenseman,
well, you know, now they'vegot, you know, in the Nicks,
Schmidt who was being i think histhird year there, second or third
(02:22):
with the Jets. Dylan Samberg whoplayed at um d H is really becoming
a pretty good player. So he'sgot some experience. And you know Josh
Morrissey, who you know almost wonthe Norris a year ago, this fabulous
player. So again, if you'relooking at the Jets and they are able
(02:46):
to keep Schifflee and Halibuck, youknow, that's a team that you know,
is I think is maybe a notchabove some of the other teams in
the in the central. Yeah,it's interesting back because this is a team
that I thought might emerge a lifelast year and they kind of had an
okay season and didn't really emerge. And but you look at some of the
components they have. If Hellibuck's there, Hellabuck has potentially be one of the
(03:07):
better goalies in the National Hockey League. Offensively, They've always been able to
be able to score a little bit, especially on the power play, and
Kyle Connor emerged last years maybe apotential star on this league. Like they
have some pieces up front, They'vegot a goal attending. You mentioned the
defense, were like, if everythingis put together, I don't know if
there's something in the water or there'sa culture issue there. I don't know
(03:28):
if there's a locker room issue. But every year you go into going,
man, this team does have potentialto, you know, maybe be one
of better teams in the division.Well, well, Mark Schiflee is is
we all know a fabulous player nowAnd I even talked to Nature. You
made a little bit about him thisthis summer when when I ran into Nate
(03:49):
and you know, says, youknow what, he's a good guy.
We get along all this stuff offthe ice, and but there's something that
doesn't resonate between schif Lee and thecoach, Chief Lee in the management and
you know that's that's been a problemfor them, and they're going to have
to make a decision or you know, either either resign the guy, come
(04:13):
to some type of agreement where theyall get along a little bit better.
Because when Mark schife Lee is theguy, I mean him and Kyle Connor
are are the two main pieces nowof that team. And and so you
know, depending upon what the marketis for him, what he wants financially,
you know, we're gonna have towait and see how this plays out.
(04:34):
But when he plays, you know, he's he's one of the you
know, on the top center manin the league. There's no question it
should be an interesting I think firsthalf of the season for Winnipeg because they
are a team that if they're notmeeting their expectations by the time the trade
deadline, this this team could bein cell mode big time, right and
(04:58):
I look at h this team isnot committed to a lot of players past
two seasons. Pat you know, even just the amount of money that's going
to come off the books after thisseason. Shifely is in the last year
of his deal just over six milliondollars. Hella Buck basically the same contract
one more year left at just oversix million dollars. They've got two three
million dollars defensemen, and Brendan Dylanand Dylan Demelo, you know, and
(05:21):
Dylan's almost four million. Needo NitaWriter has four million left just for one
season. So this is a teamthat, you know, could be having
about twenty million dollars coming off thebooks this year and then even the following
season. They have a bunch ofplayers like Nate Schmidt and Neil Piank that
are almost making six million, iffollows making four million, they're all coming
(05:41):
off the books the following season. They only have three players on this team
right now that are committed for thetwenty twenty five twenty twenty six season,
So this could be a huge transformationand a lot of it's going to depend
here on this first couple of monthsof this season. Yeah, I think
you're one hundred percent correct, becauseyou know, if guys get the feeling,
hey, we have a chance towin. You know, I am
willing to resign here and and thenKevin cheval day off, the the GM's
(06:05):
have to say, you know,is this is this the guy I want
to uh potentially be part of usmaking a run and a lot of unanswered
questions if they you know what whatyou just discussed and what I brought up,
you know, you call it noise, right. If they can forget
(06:26):
the noise and just play, thislineup has the potential. You know,
I'm not saying they're Stanley Cup contenders, but when you have a goaltender like
Hellabuck and some of the forwards thatthey have up front, they can make
some noise. So you're you're rightthis first quarter of the season. You
(06:46):
know, where are they in thestand? Where are they at at Thanksgiving?
Right? We always look at Thanksgivingas a time where yep, this
team is is uh is you know, has a pretty good chance of making
the playoffs or you know they're gonnahave to do a heck of a lot
to get there. And so Ithink we'll know by by by Thanksgiving,
you know, just kind of wherethis team is at and what they're thinking.
(07:09):
Let's talk about some of those piecesup front. You know, over
the years, you know, PatrickLaney has moved on. Blake Wheeler,
longtime cap in there, he's nolonger there. You mentioned Schifley, he
could be gone any minute. Hemight be gone at some point this year.
You know, Kyle Connor has emergedout of the University of Michigan.
Thirty one goals last season, ledthe team with eighty points, still twenty
six years old, so he's inthe prime of his career. And then
(07:30):
another guy I've always liked, it'sjust healthy. Yeah, I know where
you're going. He couldn't stay healthylast year, but on a per minute
basis, he had more points thananyone in the league last year, including
Connor McDavid. And that would bea Nikolai Eelers man. If the guy
could just stay healthy and put itall together, I still think he could
(07:50):
be a pretty darn good player. And remember when and I don't know if
this was an accurate rumor, butthere was a rumor floating where he was
offered to Minnesota for Matt Dumbuck.I think that was in the Paul Fenton
early stages of that where you knowPaul was, you know, looking to
(08:13):
move some guys. He ended upmoving, uh meter Writer and Coyle and
all that kind of stuff, butbut he there there was a thought that
he might come to Minnesota. Iagree. If the kid can stay healthy,
I mean, he can absolutely fly, and he can finish and uh
and you know we've we're looking forthat person here for a long time.
(08:33):
Finally have one in caprisof But butyes, if if if Nikolai Eelers can
stay healthy, uh, you know, you add him with Connor and you
have a Lardy and you you know, you you have depth throughout that lineup.
Adam Lowry seems like he's been thereforever, just a consummate penalty killer,
(08:54):
big strong centerman. Not great butbut pretty darn good. So you
know they have some forwards up frontwho can you know, who can get
it done? Yeah, and youknow their farm system. I wouldn't I
wouldn't say is super elite. Andgiven this an organization that might be in
transition here a little bit, you'dlike to have a little more depth stacked
(09:16):
up from a prospect standpoint. Butone guy that does stick out to me,
Pat was he was taken right afterMarco Rossi, right in that draft
a couple of years ago. ColeParfetti eight goals, twenty two assists last
year in just fifty one games, and a nice little start to his young
career. But given they still mightlose a guy like Schiffeli here moving forward,
they're going to be dependent on aguy like Perfetti to keep keep growing
(09:37):
well with with the the Blake Wheelermove that jild free up more power play
time for him, and you knowyou progress as a player, right,
I mean the perfect example I alwaysuse is ericson Neck and and where he
was and did we think he wasreally going to be a good pro I
(09:58):
mean it, Kim want three anda half four years to really find his
niche and and now he's one ofthe top centermen two way centermen in the
league. So Perfetti, yeah,he gets eight goals last year and would
you say twenty two assists. Yeah, you know that that's you know that
(10:18):
those numbers I don't want to sayshould should double, but they should increase
now. And if that, ifthat does for him, that's really going
to help Winnipeg. All right,Pat, the next time I talked to
you, we'll be talking about theMinnesota Wild and our vision for the Division
series. Looking forward to that,Brandon, all right, he's Pat mcletty,
(10:39):
I'm Brandon Laski. This has beenanother episode of Mini BTP and we
will continue our vision for this divisionseries with the Minnesota Wild next. Thank
you so much for watching and listeningto a Mini Beyond the Pod
