Speaker 1 (00:01):
From the ponds to the pros. It's time for Beyond
the Pond on the fan. Here are your hosts, Pat
mcletty and Kevin Faulness.
Speaker 2 (00:12):
But frigid temperatures, snow lightly falling through the air, smells
like hockey. Welcome to Beyond the Pond the season debut.
And as much as I'm excited to talk about hockey
on all levels, I'm more excited to see my close
(00:32):
personal friend Pat mcletty in the flesh in studio, here
in the campe and studios.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
How you doing, big boy?
Speaker 4 (00:38):
I am doing great, Kevin, and it's great to see you.
Speaker 2 (00:40):
And Brett. It's good to Oh, here we go.
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Brett the great bread by Brett.
Speaker 2 (00:46):
Here we are. Oh you ready, Brett? Are you ready?
Speaker 5 (00:51):
Yeah? I'm ready. I'm excited like it exciting to talk about.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
Yes, we'll get to the wild and of course there's
plenty to talk about. We got an action pack show
and it should be a lot of fun. But I
want to get the update on mister Patt mccletty. Everyone
knows that it hasn't been an easy road the last
few months for you. So where we at the fact
that I'm seeing you here in studio, aided by the
always capable Alex mcletty. Great to see you in studio,
see you face to face, because I know it's been
a trying a couple of months.
Speaker 4 (01:16):
Yeah, twenty four days in the hospital, craziest thing I've
ever been through.
Speaker 2 (01:21):
Didn't know what was going on, and.
Speaker 4 (01:23):
Ultimately they determined it was a virus combined with the
neurological problem which completely sat my legs. And so we
got a little nerve problem that we're working through. And
and you know, now I've just got to get stronger.
My legs are toothpicks as you can see. But but
(01:44):
you know, every day's a little victory. We find a
victory every day and and so but I feel good,
and you know, it just got got a got a
little got a lot of work to do, but.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
We're getting there. And saw you on the television screen
I think it was last week again. So you made
your way back into the broadcast booth too. So you
talk about those baby steps, that was a pretty big one.
Speaker 4 (02:05):
It was you know, I needed to get back, you know,
and and my and first off, I want to thank
everybody at the Mayo Clinic, you know, my doctors, my
you know, rehab people, the nurses, all of them were
you know.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
Putting up with me for twenty four days. Oh my god,
you're kidding me. Oh my god.
Speaker 4 (02:25):
Yeah, they were saying, see when you're out, you know,
this is really real nice to meet you. But for them,
and and then uh, you know, our our our production
crew Fox nine, everybody just helpful because you know, I couldn't.
I can't stand during games yep yet and I usually
stand like most Prosy broadcasters do. And so they they
(02:48):
you know, they they made it. They get the right
chairs for me, and you know, the set that the
monitor is great, and you know, everybody they were just terrific.
Matt Hoover, our producer, was you know with but Rush
Media was was terrific. And so yeah, it worked out
well and it was great to be just great to
be back at a game Ken and you know, to
be able to you know, be part of it and
(03:09):
stuff was was great. So ill I can't travel unfortunately,
just because I you know, I need a couple of
people to help. But but I'll do the home games and.
Speaker 2 (03:21):
Until I can travel. Awesome, And you're here for beyond
the plot. You think a lot of people so far
how about your family. We got the capable Alex. I
know you said your daughter did some great things for him.
Speaker 4 (03:31):
You know, Alex has been there the whole time. My
wife has been great.
Speaker 6 (03:34):
You know.
Speaker 2 (03:35):
I mean she does everything for me.
Speaker 4 (03:38):
And you know, they I can't, I can't go upstairs yet,
so they set up you know, we have an extra
bedroom and you know, they put a big TV up
for me, you know, and all that. So it's been,
it's it's been. It's been good, you know, just you know,
you have good days, you have bad days, but you
you know, I mean it could be worse.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
It could be worse. So we're on the right track.
When I first heard the news, I was really scared.
And then the results continue to get better and better.
In the fact that you're here, I mean, it's taken
a complete one to eighty from where it was to
where it is. So and I'm watching just from you know,
an interested spectator. So it's awesome to see in studio. Uh,
let's keep it going in the right direction. And it's
(04:17):
it's fun. And you've been laid up, You've been watching
a lot of TV probably and watching a lot.
Speaker 4 (04:22):
Of hockey at wild Yeah, I tell you that much.
Speaker 2 (04:25):
How about the team that you watched in October compared
to the one you're watching now in November, including yesterday
a Black Friday, just a gym of a hockey game
all the way around, the Wild came out with both points.
Speaker 4 (04:35):
Yeah, you know, that's the That's kind of been the
story that John Hines era, hasn't it. They they just
you know, they they they you know, I think they
didn't know what they had in October. And I don't
think the guys knew what they had in October. You know,
he got year off, he got you know, you got
some new guys. You're you're you're trying to implement into
(04:56):
the system, and it's always tough.
Speaker 2 (04:58):
But then and then they found it.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
You know, they found it because they have character guys,
you know from I mean his broad favorite not.
Speaker 2 (05:05):
Going to be your ultimate leader, I mean honestly, yeah,
I mean he's following right in the footsteps of it,
Jared Spurgeon. It's sickening. And and then you look at
all this BOLDI twenty four, maybe twenty three, maybe twenty four,
and he can't be much more than that, Okay?
Speaker 4 (05:19):
Is he not matured as a You can just see
it that. Okay, I know, I know, I'm I'm the
guy now and I have to be the guy not
once in a while.
Speaker 2 (05:30):
But every night.
Speaker 4 (05:31):
And he's been that guy every night. And you know,
we don't we don't need to talk about ninety seven. Yeah,
you know, I mean he's he's been terrific and getting
Zucarello back and I mean, ek is ech what do
you what do you say?
Speaker 2 (05:45):
Yeah, that line has been amazing, that Ec Boldie and
Johansson and I know that he drew a lot of
the fans out here even coming into the season and
the fact that what they brought him back again he's
going to end up in the top six. Well, thank
god he did well.
Speaker 4 (05:57):
I mean, if you watch the way he's playing, you know,
compared to last year. Yeah, you know what he's doing
it every shift absolutely and you know what, he'll take
a hit, he'll give a hit, and he'll get in
the areas that you know why I never gave up
on him, And we had this conversation and on the
(06:18):
weekly show Wild Weekly with you and Brandon, is that
his speed just opens up ice for everybody and his
linemates and so when he's doing the other things mine.
He's pretty pretty good, Yeah, pretty damn.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Good without a doubt.
Speaker 2 (06:35):
And the good thing is, to me, the biggest difference
between October to November is that defensive structure in front
of them. But none of that matters if you're not
getting goaltending. Gosh, we talk about it all the time
in the broadcast. You can play as well as you want,
but as long as you've got bad goaltending, you've got nothing.
And right now they've got two of the best, right
And yes, Pervalstad is on a heater like I don't
(06:57):
know that I've seen anyone in a wild uniform. And
that's all due respect to Manny Fernandez, Dwayne Rolis and
Devin Dube, Nick Nicholas Backstrom the heater that yes, Pravalstad
is on right now, Patrick, especially if it gets passed
overtime into the shootown, the guy feels like he's just
well the Wall of Saint Paul.
Speaker 4 (07:13):
What do we know, Kevin about making it? Making runs
in the playoffs make you know, it's the big equalizer.
If you don't have goaltending, you're done. But now what
this has done is that and you know, we we
talked about this too, but I'll bring it up again,
is that it pushes gus yep, it pushes him and
(07:36):
it makes him say, oh, I've got.
Speaker 2 (07:39):
To be ready.
Speaker 4 (07:40):
I can't oh even if I have a poor stomach
like he did in the Four Nations and I'm not
ripping them. But the reality was, and in Game eighty
two last year, didn't didn't come out for the third
I'm not you know, people get sick, I get it,
and you know all that. So I'm not going to say, oh, well,
he didn't want to play in the third period of
(08:02):
the biggest game whether we make the playoffs or not
make the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (08:05):
But I think it's just going to put.
Speaker 4 (08:07):
Something in his head where Okay, I got a guy
he was playing Rookie of the Year, like, you know,
is he rook is he.
Speaker 3 (08:16):
Considered he's considered a rookie. I think he actually is.
Speaker 2 (08:18):
Yeah, there's a little asterisk by his name in the
stats because he is still they're considering him a rookie.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
But I got a guy who's six and oh and
in his last six starts, yeah, six and all.
Speaker 2 (08:27):
Yeah, they're pushing each other and that's what's so great.
So you need Gusson did that for for Flower last
year and now it's Valstad pushing Gus.
Speaker 4 (08:37):
Don't you think it was a little bit different though,
because Flower was Flower and he wasn't going to play
you know, he was I didn't get that feeling that
he was going to be okay, you know, he was
just that guy, that nice guy. You know, Yeah, play
me when you want to play me, and you know,
blah blah blah. But this is two young guys going it,
(09:00):
you know, I mean, and I think it's a healthy competition.
Speaker 3 (09:03):
Oh, without a doubt. Yeah, they love each other, it is.
Speaker 2 (09:06):
They are pushing each other for playing time and right
now they're in a full blown rotation.
Speaker 7 (09:09):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (09:09):
I don't know how much longer it lasts, especially the
way Valstad is playing and the way he's getting results.
You have to look at this schedule, Patrick, They've played
almost twenty five games already. They're not even through November. No,
I mean, they're playing on just They're gonna have fourteen
games in the month of November. You have to have
two goaltygers. And to me, that was the biggest question
mark coming into this season. You knew pretty much what
(09:31):
you had in Philip Gusofson, but yes, for Valstad. You know,
God love him. He was an unknown commodity coming into
this season. He had a great resume and before he
got into the pros, but he did not look good
last year in the American Ocuyer behind a very bad team,
but he also struggled with injuries, and he'll be the
first to admit mentally he was a shell of his
(09:52):
former self.
Speaker 3 (09:53):
But all of that has been wiped away. It started
in October.
Speaker 2 (09:56):
Even if the team wasn't getting results, he was and
now he's seven h to two something like that. He's
unbeaten in regulation this season. He's won three straight in
the shootout, has been basically unstoppable. I know they beat
him one time last night, but he made the stop
when he had to. He denied Cale McCarthy got the victory,
and he's just been a force.
Speaker 3 (10:16):
I had an opportunity to talk to.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Him earlier this week and the difference between Volstead and
Gustavson compared to what Marc Andre Fleury is. Fleury is
going to make the spectacular safe because constantly he's gonna
be out of position. He's going to be throwing himself
in the crease. He's going to bend his spine like
it's a slinky But Gustafson and Valstead make everything look
so easy because they're so positionally sound.
Speaker 4 (10:35):
Here's the deal too. You know, if you look back
to last year, remember when they called him up and
they put him in a.
Speaker 2 (10:41):
Game in a real tough spot in Dallas back to back. Yes,
but you're coming.
Speaker 4 (10:45):
Up and you don't really feel part of the team
and you know you're not there for a long time
because of the you know, they weren't going to keep
three goalies up, right, yeah, and and Flower wasn't going
and gust wasn't going. So you're kind of, I don't
want to say, like, you're just kind of there, and
so yeah, go ahead and play.
Speaker 2 (11:05):
And you know it wasn't good, you know, but maybe
the team wasn't good. And from me you can't recall.
Speaker 4 (11:10):
But now he's it's you got some stability, you live here,
you know, you're on the team, and and he's and
he's run with it, growing with each and every save.
And let's not forget he was the number one pick
for a reason. You know, I mean he was freaking
really really good as a junior, you know, junior goaltender
(11:31):
and and certainly earned the right to be a first
round draft pick. And now he you know, now it's
it just takes time with the younger guys too, and
and you and we're seeing it.
Speaker 2 (11:41):
So but now the big question.
Speaker 4 (11:44):
And I and I, Hey, I'm gonna admit when I
was wrong.
Speaker 8 (11:49):
I went into the season.
Speaker 4 (11:54):
No first time though, is that I didn't think this
team would have the depth. I thought, oh my gosh.
Speaker 2 (12:02):
One injury here, one injury there.
Speaker 4 (12:05):
We're gonna have to hang on for a while, right
And now now it's now it's a situation where look
at the advancement of year off. We talked about who
I told you, and all of a sudden, he's in.
He's in the mix to stage your number one center.
Speaker 3 (12:26):
He could be your long term number one center.
Speaker 2 (12:28):
Correct, So what does that mean? What does that mean?
That means you got to find a place for Rossi
because he's not going to the second line when he
comes back.
Speaker 8 (12:36):
Right.
Speaker 4 (12:36):
So, and I've had this conversation with other people is
what do you do with them?
Speaker 2 (12:44):
I mean, what do you do with them?
Speaker 4 (12:46):
And I say that not him being he's a top
six guy, but he may not be a top six
guy here. So what is the what is the rule
for a guy like him your fourth line?
Speaker 2 (13:04):
And I get in arguments with.
Speaker 4 (13:05):
People about this. He's not a fourth liner right right?
For what they have to do.
Speaker 2 (13:11):
That's a Nicol Sturm spot. Anyway, he's going to be
your fourth line size right? Why because he's a checker
and he he loves that role. And yeah, Rossi's not
that guy, right right?
Speaker 4 (13:22):
And again nothing, but there's been talk, not his name,
but there's been talk about Minnesota adding a top six guy.
So to add a top six guy, well, you're not
going to give your own fourth round picks, fifth round pick,
sixth round pick.
Speaker 2 (13:41):
You give up quality players aka potential Marco Rossi, potentially him,
and you know I and I throw it.
Speaker 4 (13:51):
I throw this name out there, I throw you know,
if they're going to try to get a high level player,
you can name names of a Tate Thompson, you know,
guys like that, right, you have to give up more
than a Marco. I throw Jonas Brodein out there. Oh,
(14:12):
don't do that, and I won't. But my point is
you have to give up something to get something. And yeah,
you want it to be a fair trade for both teams,
but you know, it all depends on Bill Garan thinks
he needs, you know, to keep this thing going. I
think they need another top six forward just because Kevin
(14:34):
to make a run. You know, you need to really
two lines that are really gonna like whoa yeah say,
you know, I don't know what they're gonna do.
Speaker 2 (14:45):
Maybe they won't do anything.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
We saw what happened last year, right when they they
went on a run early. They are in their playoff
spot in December by December and needed to just you know,
hold serve right.
Speaker 2 (15:02):
They did that.
Speaker 4 (15:03):
They did that, yep, so you know, well, I'm just
curious to see eventually what will happen.
Speaker 2 (15:11):
I'm just glad they're in this conversation because October they
dropped nine of twelve. It was as thick of an
atmosphere as when Dean Evison got fired. I mean, that's
the type of month that cost people jobs. They didn't
they were patient. And whatever happened in that player's only
meeting and the Halloween party and how it trans transferred
into November, I have no idea.
Speaker 3 (15:31):
I don't care.
Speaker 2 (15:32):
Whatever they did, it's been magic because they're eleven one
and one this month alone, after losing nine to twelve
to open the season. So whatever they did, they found
some kind of a magic formula. Now you got to
keep it going. They were really good yesterday against a
very good Colorado Avalanche team.
Speaker 3 (15:46):
Now avoid the hangover.
Speaker 2 (15:48):
Get your twelfth win of the of the month of
November tonight against a bad Buffalo Sabers team that's lost.
Speaker 3 (15:54):
They're dead last in the Eastern Conference.
Speaker 2 (15:55):
They continue to flounder at the bottom of the standings
year after year after year. But these are the kinds
of games that scare me before they go on a
lengthy road. Try I ask you.
Speaker 4 (16:04):
This, would you like to see Alex Tuck back in
the organization?
Speaker 2 (16:07):
And what? I yeah? I mean you can pick I
can pick a handful of guys off that team that
would look great in a wild uniform. But it takes
some magic to pull it off. I know there's been
talks about that, and we can get.
Speaker 4 (16:16):
Into that because you can look at Buffalo's team and yeah,
they've got a plethora of talent.
Speaker 2 (16:20):
They do. Why has it not transferred into Whims right?
You know they haven't made the playoffs since you played.
I mean, it's it's been it hasn't been that long,
but still it's been it's been incredible. It's awful. All right,
we got to take a break. We're going to talk
some college hockey. We got to get into the Gophers.
We're going to talk to Luke Strand, the head coach
of Minnesota State. When we return. Will also be joined
later in the show by Tony Scott our youth Hockey Up.
(16:41):
We got an extended show here, not only the season debut.
We're going to twelve thirty because the battle for the
Paul Bunyan's Acts takes place later on this afternoon, and
they've got a multi hour pregame show that starts at
twelve thirty. So we'll walk your right up to Guardzy
out there at Huntington Banks Stadium. But also I got
to get your thoughts on this, Patrick eleven Am, the
(17:02):
great John Mayasich will be here in studio the go
How much fun is that? Oh my god, We're going
to have the top two scores in Golden Goal for
history in one place. I can't wait. I knew for
a fact that when I told you John was coming
in studio to talk about all things hockey and including
his new book that's out, I knew that you would
light up, and you actually did, and it's gonna be fun.
(17:23):
He'll be hearing about forty five minutes. It'll be awesome.
Speaker 4 (17:26):
And you know, I've never told him this, and I'm
going to tell him this is that you know, I listen,
I finished thirty points behind him or something. Yeah, but
if I would have got close, I leave it there is.
Speaker 3 (17:38):
That right, you would watched away.
Speaker 4 (17:40):
I have that much respect and adoration for him, unless
it was the you know, Frozen four. Well back then
it was the final four, Yeah, and we needed a goal, right, right,
big difference.
Speaker 2 (17:54):
And I think he'd understand yeah, and he'd probably be
rooting for you because he's just that kind of guy.
So all that's coming up here in the next couple
of hours. We also want your text and your talkbacks.
Text us at six four six eighty six, Light that up.
Tell me what you think about this Minnesota Wild season
or whatever's going on in your world in the world
of hockey. Tell me what you think about the Minnesota
Wild via those talkbacks, We're gonna give away a couple
(18:16):
of random sets of tickets to the Wild and Savers
coming up later on tonight six forty five pregame, right
here on FM one hundred point three. The Fan and
the Puck Drop will be at seven o eight Wild
and Savers. You can go, and all you gotta do
is text us six four six eighty six or leave
us one of those million dollar texts those talkbacks on
the free iHeartRadio app. Do all that and more. We're
(18:36):
talking to Luke Strand. Next, I'm Beyond the Pond, the
season debut of Beyond the Pond, going till twelve thirty
before the Gophers take on Wisconsin for Paul Bunyan's X
(18:57):
Kevin Faunus, along with Pat mcletty cast of thousands in
studios and including our great friend Brett Blake Moore. Alex
mcletty is here as well, and we're pleased now to
be joined by the head coach at Minnesota State, Luke Strand.
A team that's red hot there in at man Cato
is battling there in. Where are you, Marquette, Michigan, right there, coach?
Speaker 6 (19:17):
Where the snow globe of market, Well.
Speaker 3 (19:20):
It's snowing here too.
Speaker 2 (19:21):
Before we get into the Minutia, let's talk about last
night's win, a four zero shutout of northern Michigan.
Speaker 6 (19:28):
Yeah, kind of good for the guys that you know,
we're growing and I think the guys are following through
an asked and they're becoming more consistent with it, which
is a good sign for us and obviously playing room
for growth. But we've been nicked up by the injury
bugging guys are just playing different spots. But the galvanizing
moment of everyone getting involved in impact is is really
(19:50):
good for our team.
Speaker 4 (19:51):
Hey, look, always great to talk to you as always.
Speaker 2 (19:56):
When you play.
Speaker 4 (19:57):
When you go up to a team that hasn't won
a game in the league this year, and you know,
we know that you know the struggles that Northern has
been through. Is it is it difficult to get your
team or or what do you say to your team?
Uh so it's not like a trap series, you know,
to get them ready to play a team that that
(20:19):
hasn't won a game.
Speaker 6 (20:21):
No, your thanks, Pat, and by the way, great to
your voice back at it. Thank you. You know it
is you want to keep a standard and play to
a standard and play it opponentless hockey as you can.
You know, can we play better than we were a
week ago? And vice versa, can we nip things that
we did it? We could go that we might not
have liked or or liked and add on to it.
(20:44):
Those are big parts. And then end of the day
like for just for our crew, like yeah, you successfully close,
so you can't take things for granted, and we got
to find ways to just keep getting better because it's
gonna matter.
Speaker 4 (20:58):
Yeah, boy, I have a ton of question Toria. You
know you talked about the injury bug. We'll start there,
and I see you got another one last night as
Zetterberg was injured.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
I don't know his status.
Speaker 4 (21:11):
But I mean, you guys have been just completely dinged up,
you know, barely enough guys to get in the lineup.
How how has that been and and if it gets
to a point, Luke, has there ever been a thought
of bringing guys more guys in at Christmas? Or or
are you just kind of waiting to see how things
(21:33):
shape out?
Speaker 7 (21:36):
You know?
Speaker 6 (21:36):
Well, the answer to that, we we opted in and
there's like thirty four of the teams that opted into
the house, the House settlements, so we are actually at
robster capacity. And the way it's it's laid out right now,
which I think these are unforeseen compliquents of what the
mc doua a had going yeah, there there is no addition.
(21:58):
You really, you can't add so so I mean for
a sit now, yeah, we're If you're under twenty sixth dyeah,
you can find your head. But if you're not, you're
at your living And then the other pro I think
for us to be like the all hands on deck though,
we've got centers playing wing and d playing center. And
(22:19):
I'll tell you that, everybody.
Speaker 4 (22:22):
No one's feeling sorry for you, all right, nice, No
one's feeling sorry for you.
Speaker 2 (22:27):
No one is feeling.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
Right, No such thing, no thing.
Speaker 4 (22:32):
Did you guys, did you gus coaches? Did you say, hey,
that's not enough, guy, I mean we need more, you know,
twenty eight thirty. Did you guys have any saying that
or or was that just the way it was?
Speaker 6 (22:45):
No, we didn't, and it was just the opt in.
I think the price. You know, all the rosters of
different sports had to change, and they found twenty six
for hockey. It's too short. I mean, it should be
twenty eight. And if someone wants more for me, you
got to deal with more. You know, a year ago
we didn't have a lot of interest, so then you
(23:07):
got trying to make guys into in the lineups that
don't shouldn't come out or get in. And it's a
fine line. It's it's been a wonky wonky injury to
top it off, Yeah.
Speaker 4 (23:19):
A couple of guys I want to talk about that
that you know, both should be considered for the Hoby
in my opinion. But my opinion is, you know, irrelevant.
But but Evan murr And and Alex Tracy are you know,
two of the best in college hockey, and uh talk
about them and their leadership and you know, uh, just
(23:42):
how they've been for your team.
Speaker 6 (23:44):
You know that you got the right two guys. Mersey
at the I think it's whatever third in the country
scoring for defense and right now, and but what's happened
to the team is is starting. This is just complete
game has really been on the rise, is off and
some instincts are very high end. But he just does
he does more than I think the the blue line
(24:06):
for us. He's a great transition. He's gotten so much,
like I said, thirtier with defending, getting stops and then
trace and you know, I know we've got the Richter
reward and I know the whole beat. It's it's hard
to ignore what he's done. On such a crazy.
Speaker 2 (24:22):
Consisted level all the time.
Speaker 6 (24:24):
Yeah, we've been representing your country in the Finger Cup
over over the break there, and it's it's I've been lucky.
I've been had a I've had a great seat to
this whole thing for a long time. Winning a close
cup with him in Sioux City, to you know, being
reunited with the pure man Catos, an absolute warrior of
a kid, that's a fund of a human beings.
Speaker 2 (24:44):
Talking to Luke Strand, head coach at Minnesota State, the
Mavericks got the victory last night in you got the
four zero win in Marquette, Michigan. The rematch coming up
later on tonight six o seven of the puck drop
in the Eastern time zone, a little after five o'clock
here in a little bit closer to home, Luke, when
I look at the c cha tell me how things
(25:05):
have evolved. It's fun from a spectators standpoint to see
the new buildings there in Augustana, the new one there
in Saint Thomas as well. Life feels like it's been
going in the right direction there for your conference.
Speaker 6 (25:18):
It's been good. I mean, I think the parody is
is very high.
Speaker 8 (25:22):
You know.
Speaker 6 (25:22):
The additional open up of retail players, et cetera. Have
I've probably bought some depth to a lot of rosters
in our conference. We've had great about a conference success,
I know, unfortunately, but mean, you lost to Nodak last night,
but right there, it's our job to beat teams from
from other conferences. And then when we're inside of it,
(25:43):
it is you take your foot off the gas or
try to sleep through on your you're usually paying for it.
Speaker 4 (25:49):
Hey, look, quite frankly, my blood is boiling because I'm
so sick of the disrespect that the CCHA is getting.
I spoke to another coach in the league that I
don't have to tell you who it is, but you
know we are talking and and and and you know,
I said, hey, there are six teams in my opinion
(26:11):
that could win the league this year. I mean, I
think the parody as you mentioned this, the you know,
the skill level is you know, because of you know
what happened with the with the HL. It's a darn good,
hard league and you don't get easy wins any night.
(26:32):
And I'm just, quite frankly, I'm sick of the disrespect.
Speaker 2 (26:36):
That your league gets.
Speaker 4 (26:37):
Secondly, you deserve to go at lead I mean, you
were you were darn close to going to the Frozen
Four last year. I thought you were the better, better
team against Western Michigan, who ended up, you know, making
that run and winning it. But you you know, I
thought you guys should have won that game. So anyway,
that's my two cents on that. And you know you
(26:58):
can chime in or not chime in, but but you know,
I just I just think your league gets complete lack
of respect and it's uh, it's time that people take
a look at it.
Speaker 6 (27:10):
We will thank you. We we totally agree with you.
I think the engines are hard in our league. I
guess it's it's it's there's a friction that happens night in,
night out. Offensively, defensely, doesn't matter. The goaltending has been
superb business, getting better every single year about it. So
I know the teams are tight, and you know, people
(27:31):
are like, oh, there's enough skill over else. The goaltenders
are good, So there's there's a lot going on to it.
Just a great intense league, and the coaches have done
a great job of building rosters that that have depth
and can win outside of our league.
Speaker 2 (27:47):
Look, thanks for doing this. Good luck tonight. At the
Bury Events Center, and we will, uh you know, we'll
be watching you if if the if the Micheletties are involved,
you know they're keeping an eye on Minnesota State. So
we'll be watching and we'll be talking about you throughout
the season.
Speaker 6 (28:00):
Even better, guys, you guys stick here and thinks happening.
Speaker 2 (28:03):
Yeah, thanks Luke the head coach uh at Minnesota State,
Luke Strand. They got the victory last night, looking for
the weekend sweep that they can take out Northern Michigan.
Now six one and two on the season and second
place in the CCHA behind your but Midgie State Beavers.
Speaker 4 (28:18):
Yeah, I mean, listen, I it is really it's a hard,
hard league. And when you have six teams that you
throw out there and any one of them could win.
I'm talking Bowling Green, Augustana, Saint Thomas, Michigan Tech, Minnesota
State whom I missing I'm missing one. But uh, you know,
it's just it's a it's a really really difficult, hard league,
(28:43):
good league. The skill has improved and uh so yeah,
you know, keep an eye on the CCHA.
Speaker 2 (28:49):
I'm going to assume you haven't been to that new
rink there on the Tommy's campus start. I've heard unbelievable fast.
You know the same thing with August, and I know
that's all not adding.
Speaker 4 (28:57):
There, but yeah, yeah, and get good for them.
Speaker 2 (29:00):
Oh my goodness. Yeah, good for college hockey in general.
You love to see the sport grow and that's a
great way to do it. Let's take a break and
then when we continue we'll get into your talkbacks. Got
some great text rolling in as well. We're giving away
tickets to see the Wild and Sabers tonight in Saint Paul.
You can get your own tickets at wild dot com,
slash tickets, keep them coming, text us at six four
six eighty six and use that talkback feature. Plus when
(29:23):
we continue, maybe it's time to bust out Brett Blakemore's breakaways.
You're listening to be on the pond on the fans.
Speaker 8 (29:33):
You're gonna need to get a breaking mortar company down
in Saint Paul.
Speaker 9 (29:37):
The Ballstatt is gonna need some more material to build
that wall up some more. But he said the whole
team looks like they've taken a step in the right
direction this year.
Speaker 2 (29:49):
It took a couple of weeks, but Ultendom Bull tending
settled in and been really fun watching this team. It's
just had a little different feel this year.
Speaker 6 (29:56):
It's nice a.
Speaker 2 (29:58):
Wild Kevin and Mit. Great to have you guys back on.
Beyond the Pond.
Speaker 10 (30:03):
Is comfort food to the Minnesota hockey fans. Ears, great
to have you guys back on again, and Mick, great
to hear your health is trending in the right direction.
Speaker 3 (30:14):
Keep it going, my friend, Love you guys. Yeah, I
got a lot of text to that variety.
Speaker 2 (30:20):
Great to I'm I'm loving the fact that I'm able
to see Pat mcletty in studio, but great to hear
your voice on the f on the airways here as
we get the season debut of Beyond the Pond back
on the air, So again I will I'll echo what
everyone else is saying. Great to see you, Patrick, Great
to see you guys. So let's get into it. It's
been a long time coming. And for the fans that
(30:41):
don't know Buck Love, it's time for Brett Blakemore's breakaways.
Speaker 6 (30:45):
It's time for Brett blake Boards breakaway.
Speaker 11 (30:58):
And now like.
Speaker 2 (31:00):
Great boy, let me tell you this, Patrick, when we're
opening the show and you're giving your thoughts on the Euros,
the ross He's the whole time back behind the glass,
he's seeking his head. All here are rock shaking back there.
His head is just rattling. So you know this has
been a long time coming. Are you ready?
Speaker 5 (31:18):
It's not the first time that Pat mcleny has called
for the trade of Marco Rossi on this show.
Speaker 3 (31:22):
For the trade, yes you did. He did not call
for the trade of Marco right.
Speaker 2 (31:27):
He said if something were to happen that he would
probably be the guy that would be funny. Oh, here's
the audio.
Speaker 3 (31:32):
I would say, Halla lujah if it's just that. Oh,
I'm all over it, Rossie King, I'm.
Speaker 4 (31:39):
All over It would have been all over for that one.
Are you kidding me?
Speaker 5 (31:42):
It's got three goals this year? So no, But actually
I don't want to go there. I will talk you
Rob though, I actually want to talk. I want to
do some.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
Ripping, and not of any of you guys.
Speaker 5 (31:52):
That'll be nice, thank you, No, because I actually do
like you guys. If I didn't like you, I wouldn't
be ripping you. I'd be stewing to my quietly. I
want to rip someone by the name of Connor McGahee.
And I understand that you're.
Speaker 2 (32:06):
Avalanche play by play radio right, yes, yes, you're in
the booths and you want to be friends.
Speaker 5 (32:12):
I can rip him to shreds. The guy is eetulance
and he's frankly just a bum.
Speaker 2 (32:19):
What did he do to you?
Speaker 3 (32:21):
The radio guy for the Avalanche.
Speaker 5 (32:23):
Well, I'll have you know, first of all, just the
way that he's acting. Here's the real crime is the
end of the game. In the shootout, here does.
Speaker 12 (32:31):
Herey comes Kale mccarr right handed shot, white side, circle
of acar try to go five boles stay made by
ball stent and he celebrates like he's one with Stanley Cup.
Speaker 7 (32:41):
He has not.
Speaker 12 (32:45):
It's a three to two shootout win for the Wild
and the Avalanche have their first loss of any kind
in ten games. They still get a point. They still
lead the Central Division, they still lead the National Hockey League,
and they still are the best team in the world.
Speaker 3 (33:01):
Three two is your final wow.
Speaker 5 (33:03):
So first of all, you got to mention you're the
best team in the world. The fact that a rookie,
why are we on celebration police all of a sudden?
Can we not show a little personality here? Can Falsa
not have fun out there? It just has to be
going through the motions yelling at Cloud's guy, what a bump?
Speaker 3 (33:20):
I for one love it. I don't know about you, Pat,
I can't.
Speaker 4 (33:23):
Believe I'm agreeing with Brett Blake exactly now.
Speaker 2 (33:27):
How would I feel if it was Wedgwood doing it
on the other side of the ice. The difference here
is that we know the backstory of what Valstad went
through last year. We know what he's been able to
do this year, and this has just been kind of
his bit. You know, he's celebrating, not like he won
the Stanley Cup, but I think we know what he's
went through and that emotion is coming through.
Speaker 3 (33:47):
I for one love it.
Speaker 4 (33:48):
Here's another point we all know, and we would all say,
no question about it. The best team in the league
right now is the Colorado Avalanche. I agreed, you know,
I mean, and they they've earned that. And so when
you beat a team like them that hasn't lost in
ten games, what do you not? What do you are
you supposed to just go off the ice?
Speaker 2 (34:10):
Yeah? I mean, you know you acknowledge, you're pumped for
what you.
Speaker 4 (34:14):
Did, and you just stopped the two best.
Speaker 3 (34:19):
Players in the game, right Yeah.
Speaker 2 (34:21):
Mccarr and McKinnon.
Speaker 9 (34:22):
Stop.
Speaker 2 (34:23):
I think McKinnon scored.
Speaker 4 (34:24):
No, didn't know he did not.
Speaker 2 (34:26):
Hang on, I got here. McKinnon was the second he missed.
It was the first guy then that scored. It was
oh yeah, Martin, he just scored. McKinnon was stopped. Mccarr
was stop. You're absolutely right, and so those are the
two that were denied. Would you not celebrate? Yes? Yes,
I would, yes, And that's been his thing, especially when
he wins in the shoot out the way he does.
(34:47):
I think he deserves to celebrate, and I love it,
and I think the fans love it. That gets the
crowd going. If you're an opposing broadcaster, maybe you don't
necessarily enjoy it as much. I think we should move on.
I think so too.
Speaker 5 (34:58):
Go ahead, Well, I have so much more of ripping
of the other goals as well.
Speaker 2 (35:03):
Okay, we can move on. He was petulant.
Speaker 3 (35:05):
I know they weren't having I talked to Moser a
little bit. He's the TV play by play guy, and.
Speaker 4 (35:10):
He sent me always been.
Speaker 2 (35:11):
He wasn't happy with the fact that the one of
the Caprice have goals went in off his foot. He said,
what is a soccer now? He said, already calmed down.
It was a good goal.
Speaker 3 (35:19):
They looked at it and counted, so.
Speaker 2 (35:22):
I'll he blew him down.
Speaker 12 (35:23):
But the point throws it in front and trows off
with the real caprice Off. But it well, if a
goal was going to finally be scored against Scott Wedgwood
or frankly, any miner, it was going to be like that.
Speaker 3 (35:38):
A lucky bounds from Lackrisov.
Speaker 12 (35:40):
It's the shutout streak and what seems like three and
a half years for the Colorado Avalanche. Him threw it
in from Burns, had caprice Off tied up but not enough,
and caprice Off gets his two hundreds career goal, and
it's an ugly one.
Speaker 4 (35:57):
That's a guy that is you know, he's never going
to lose his job.
Speaker 3 (36:02):
No, I'll tell you this much.
Speaker 2 (36:03):
And and he talks about Volstead celebrating like they won
the Standleys Gap both him and Moser. When they call
a goal for the for the Avalanche, I don't care
if it's October or if it's April. It sounds like
the Avalanche just won the Stanley Cup. So you know,
maybe mind your own bobber, you know, is what I
would say to him, because I guarantee you. When Gabriel
Landeskog scored in the third period, it sounded like the
world just collapsed and it was the best thing that
(36:25):
ever happened. Yeah, so, I mean that's you know what,
that's a home broadcaster right there for you. Yeah, so
guy's a bum. And I didn't go that far. I will,
well you are here in the booth. Well, I'm not
allowed him. I actually think he does a pretty good job.
And that's the way they they call it, and so
be it. But is a good guy Moser and McGhee,
I don't know. Yeah, I don't know McGehee, but I.
Speaker 5 (36:46):
Do know Moser has been on the show and I
think he's been good to us, so very good to us.
Speaker 2 (36:50):
Not a bum at all. You're happy to hear that.
Speaker 5 (36:54):
Yeah, so I would do want to do my traditional
peacocking at this point in the breakaway segment.
Speaker 2 (37:01):
Oh, I'll hit this too. You have to hit that. Yep.
Speaker 5 (37:05):
Do you recall I think two years ago where I
looked ahead two I looked ahead to what the lineup
could be once the salary cap was over, and you said,
it's so far out, how can you possibly do it?
But that I have I had EUROV centering Caprice often
zagrel and now opening segment of the show, what are
we talking about?
Speaker 2 (37:27):
We didn't hear that. I don't listen to on Brett
talks exactly. Well, then all right, going go ahead continue.
Speaker 5 (37:33):
I'm just saying I'm happy that things have come to
fruition that I predicted. But also I'm really happy that
you're Off is turning out and they're giving him a
shot and it looks like he's it's his spot to lose.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Well at this point, here's the.
Speaker 4 (37:44):
Deal, and I'll try to make this condensed. But you
have a different mindset when you are in the top
six or in the bottom six. And that is simply
because when you're in the top six, you are expected
to produce offensively, you know, be that guy that is
(38:05):
a threat all the time. When you're in the bottom six,
you are in your mindset and it's just how you
think as a player. Is that, Okay, I gotta be
really really responsible defensively, can't give anything up. And when
and as the and when the coach gives the guys
in the top six, when you see capricef turn the
(38:27):
puck over, it's not because he wants because he has
the ability to try to make a play. When you're
in the bottom six, you're thinking, I don't make that play,
I just get it in.
Speaker 2 (38:39):
So it's it's really really different. And that's why I
go back to.
Speaker 4 (38:43):
Kenna Marco ROSSI play in the bottom six with that,
you know, and have that mindset or even a year
of or whatever.
Speaker 2 (38:51):
So that that's my pin. Here's my thinking with Eurov,
especially when he plays in a bottom six role. He's
so great defensively.
Speaker 3 (38:58):
He he doesn't have to be.
Speaker 2 (38:59):
He does and have the offensive acumen for it as
of yet anyway, but at some point that will develop.
Why I think he works so well in the top six,
and especially on that line, you got the basically the
Sedine Twins on your wings. You got Caprisov and Zcarella
that when they're healthy, they're just gonna go out there
and play catch and they're playing pickup hockey and you
really don't even exist in their way.
Speaker 3 (39:18):
Not everybody can play with those, But that's.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Why he's so good, because he's so defensively reliable, they
can go play pickup sticks in the offensive zone and
then he's he's waiting to contribute when he can but
he can also help them out defensively. In my mind,
that you can get back and help hold down the
ford from a defensive standpoint.
Speaker 5 (39:38):
Sounds like you're watching miracle on ice. Sometimes the you're
off to Caprice, Soov to Fatissov.
Speaker 3 (39:43):
This right, it's fun to watch Caprice and Zucarella, the
things they do.
Speaker 2 (39:48):
The goal they had the other night where Zucarello somehow
found Caprice off in the slot one time blast and
there's the goaltender has no chance because the way that
puck comes off as sticks. But that's why I think
Europe compliments them so well.
Speaker 5 (40:04):
Where do you think the I think the ceiling for
Zeeve is still. You know, everyone from scouts to coaches
thinks the sky is the limit for him. But as
a stands today November twenty nine, twenty five, where do
you see his bet? I like that he's on the
first power play.
Speaker 2 (40:19):
I don't.
Speaker 5 (40:19):
I'm not offended that he's on a third pairing with Pegosian.
As the stands right now, where's his best use and uh,
where's the best chance for him to succeed in this lineup?
Speaker 2 (40:28):
As a stands today.
Speaker 4 (40:29):
He gets better every day, He's more confident. Every day,
and he's cocky because he thinks he's good and he's
not afraid to tell you he's good. And his skating
ability and puck handling ability, you.
Speaker 2 (40:42):
Know, he's just like everything. It's everything is slowing down, yep,
and boy oh boy, And it's the same for all
these young guys. We talk about euro We talk about Valsad,
we talk about every time they touched.
Speaker 3 (40:55):
The ice four years exactly.
Speaker 2 (40:58):
You don't think about jewel rics andek what took for
him to evolve into the player that he's become.
Speaker 3 (41:02):
You know, there was a lot of table.
Speaker 2 (41:04):
If he we had Britt Brett Blakemore's breakaways back in
the days, Julee would have been ran out on.
Speaker 4 (41:10):
A rail, Yeah, along with a lot like why are
you on Fillino?
Speaker 5 (41:16):
By the way, I mean he's he's the points aren't there.
But he's doing all the defensive stuff that he's doing.
Speaker 2 (41:22):
Sam Bam.
Speaker 4 (41:23):
Is he is he expected to be a point producer? No,
he is not contribute. That's what I that melt anyway,
But go ahead.
Speaker 5 (41:33):
Anyways, Yeah, I didn't rip him. I said he's doing
the things he's doing defensively, he's getting physical points aren't there?
Speaker 2 (41:38):
But that's not right now, which takes and that's the
and not to sidetrack here take away from Brett Blakemore's breakaways.
But they've gone eleven one and one in November, and
that's without key bodies missing from the lineup. We talked
about Rossie Felino's out now, Tara Cenko still day to day,
could return as soon as today. Henestroza, say what you want.
He's been a valuable addition to this roster, has been
a key piece to you know, the first two months
(42:00):
of this season you went, you know, uh, so you got.
Speaker 3 (42:04):
Guys that are four or five? Are you got four
out right?
Speaker 4 (42:08):
Now?
Speaker 2 (42:08):
You got Hartman back yesterday who proved to be a
valuable addition back into the line up yesterday in that win.
Speaker 3 (42:13):
So yeah, but that's what I mean.
Speaker 2 (42:15):
They're getting it done despite missing you know, you can't
send any.
Speaker 4 (42:18):
I mean eventually you've got to get that roster to
what it is, right and there's some guys that can't
get sent down.
Speaker 5 (42:24):
Yeah, if only there was something they could do right.
Speaker 2 (42:32):
Uh, you're of it?
Speaker 8 (42:33):
To me?
Speaker 5 (42:34):
Is this year's you want to say McK beckman, I'm
constantly pushing for him to be elevated.
Speaker 2 (42:39):
Yeah, yeah, Beckman never got a shot in the top six.
What do you want to say that again? Who's that guy?
I missed it?
Speaker 5 (42:44):
I said, mc Beckman, that's one of your many Yeah,
what do you want?
Speaker 2 (42:47):
What do you want? Well you're off.
Speaker 5 (42:49):
Oh yeah, he's elevated exactly and it's worked out.
Speaker 2 (42:52):
Well, yeah, go figure a guy. That's it's not he's
not falling down.
Speaker 5 (42:56):
I'm not going to campaign for him to be the
top center or the top line, but I just would
like to see him succeed. And I just don't know
what it's going to take. Is ogre and he skates hard,
but it's just not something's not clicking with him when
he comes up to the big club. Is there any
world where he starts breaking in to this team?
Speaker 4 (43:13):
Petty, Well, we're waiting, aren't we. I mean we're we're
you know, he's he can he can skate, he's big,
he's strong, he can shoot.
Speaker 2 (43:20):
For some reason he is not, He's not.
Speaker 8 (43:26):
I don't know.
Speaker 2 (43:27):
He just it's puzzling.
Speaker 4 (43:29):
He's very puzzling because I don't know if it's just
being cautious or what. I think he's got to throw
all that cautiousness out and just go and play because
everything is there for him to be a power forward
in this league. And it's perplexing to me. I don't
have an answer for it.
Speaker 3 (43:50):
I was distracted.
Speaker 2 (43:51):
Don't know what you're talking about, because Alex went to
go get mister Mayasich and his son.
Speaker 8 (43:57):
Man.
Speaker 2 (43:58):
You know, he's got all the tools. You watch him
in practice. He's got a world class shot, he's got
an NHL body, he can fly, but he just has
not made an impact in this team, on this team.
Speaker 4 (44:09):
So something tells me something's going on on the are
dying for coming into the season.
Speaker 2 (44:14):
They wanted him in a top six, Yes, it was
there on a silver platform with with Matt Cucarello missing
the first fifteen games, managing young man, this is your
opportunity make mistakes, and he didn't do it.
Speaker 4 (44:26):
You know, I think he's afraid God, if I make
a mistake, I'm going back down. And you know he's
just gotta he's gotta throw all that out and just play.
Speaker 2 (44:34):
I still think that there's going to be I don't
want to give up on him. No, And that's just it.
And and right now, if you were to trade him,
you'll get nothing in return, and he has the opportunity
to blossom once everything does click.
Speaker 3 (44:46):
But man, it's got to be Eric Sanak.
Speaker 8 (44:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (44:50):
I mean, there's any number of examples you can do.
Speaker 2 (44:53):
I think it's all upstairs with him. But I don't know.
Speaker 5 (44:55):
We had a couple of good hustle plays yesterday that
I noticed. I thought, oh, that was a good you know,
back check from ogrind But but just overall.
Speaker 3 (45:03):
Yeah, but way, yeah, here's a problem, Brett.
Speaker 4 (45:05):
It's not every you know, Yeah, it's got to be
every it's got to be every shift.
Speaker 2 (45:09):
And I mean no disrespect for by the way I
say this, but thus far underwhelming is how I would
sum up Liam Ogren. And he's, like I said, he's
got everything right there in front of him in terms
of tools and everything you would want from an NHL
or but it just not It hasn't clicked here on
the NHL. He in American Hockey League. He's put up numbers,
(45:29):
but it hasn't translated yet, right, you.
Speaker 4 (45:31):
Know, Tony, say, boy, Jimmy Snucker would look good in this, yeah,
you know, because he was trying.
Speaker 2 (45:37):
Yeah first, but at the same time, they also got
your other in that same draft as well, So I
get it, you know, imagine that. Yeah, I know, So
let's do this. Yeah, thank you Brett. That was great
and Brett Blakemore's breakaways. We do got to squeeze in
a break because the Goat, as Pat mccoletty calls him,
is about to come up the elevator and we are
going to be graced by Royal go for Royalty. Not
that we aren't always with Pat mccletty here, I'm beyond
(45:59):
the pop.
Speaker 4 (46:00):
No, it's John Maysic and the rest of us.
Speaker 2 (46:02):
But the number one score in Golden Gopher history is next,
and you won't want to miss this conversation with John Maysich. Next,
I'm Beyond the Pond. Human so much greatness stuffed into
(46:33):
one room. It's unbelievable that the FCC is even allowing
this welcome back to the season debut of Beyond the Pond,
and what a whopper to get things going. Not only
do we get the great Pat mcletty, you're sitting there
next to Royalty.
Speaker 3 (46:48):
I'm next to Royalty and you are as well.
Speaker 2 (46:50):
Pat mccletty and myself joined by Gopher legend John Maysich. John,
Thank you very much for joining us here on beyond
the Pond and welcome to the KFEAN studios.
Speaker 8 (47:00):
It's quite a drop get a year and then getting
up here.
Speaker 2 (47:04):
Yeah. Well, listen, we need security for people like Pat
mclady's here every week, Dan Brook. There's a lot of
radio legends that infiltrate this studio.
Speaker 3 (47:12):
We can't just let anyone into this building.
Speaker 8 (47:14):
It won't happen.
Speaker 4 (47:16):
I mean this, I mean all time league score, I
mean three hundred and two, three hundred.
Speaker 2 (47:22):
Do you have it?
Speaker 12 (47:23):
I do.
Speaker 3 (47:23):
I've got the exact numbers.
Speaker 2 (47:24):
In fact, when we talk about the legend that is
John Mayoesich, now ninety two years young from el Eveleth, Minnesota,
better than I do. He plays from nineteen fifty one
to nineteen fifty five, one hundred and forty four goals,
two hundred and ninety eight points in just one hundred
ninety eight in just one hundred and eleven games. Think
about that, I know it's crazy. What what are those
(47:47):
numbers mean to you? John? When you think about what
you did there in the early fifties and racking up
those numbers, it's.
Speaker 8 (47:53):
Not what I did. Keep go say that, Yeah, Iowa
Swift Campbell in Doory.
Speaker 2 (48:00):
Yeah about your team.
Speaker 8 (48:01):
Yeah, it was a team effort.
Speaker 7 (48:03):
Boy.
Speaker 4 (48:04):
You know, I remember when they opened the uh new
Mariucci three m at Mariucci and we have to be
you know, we have to be And we had an.
Speaker 2 (48:14):
Alumni game to open up the building.
Speaker 3 (48:17):
He's playing and guess where I was in the broadcast?
Speaker 6 (48:22):
No, I wasn't.
Speaker 4 (48:23):
I was one of the coaches because I you know,
I had a bad knee and that he's seventy some
years old and I'm watching him skate and it's just
it's like his skates didn't even hit the I mean,
it was just smooth and Mike and I'm like, oh
my god. You know, he's unbelievable. And you know, that's what.
Speaker 2 (48:44):
When when was the last time you had on a
pair of skates?
Speaker 8 (48:46):
John?
Speaker 6 (48:47):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (48:48):
Was it? Yeah, it's crazy that was the last time
you put on a pair of skates when you open
up the new barn?
Speaker 4 (48:53):
Yeah it was, And what a fun night that was.
Speaker 2 (48:56):
And you know, but my gosh, this is an opportunity
if anyone who be involved in the conversation, we can
welcome in your tech six four six eighty six. You
can also use that free. iHeart talkbacked feature. But this
is phenomenal to be joined in studio by the number
one and number two leading scorers in the history of
Golden Gold for hockey.
Speaker 4 (49:14):
And John, I've never told anybody this, you know, I finished?
Speaker 8 (49:20):
Can I shut this off?
Speaker 7 (49:21):
What?
Speaker 6 (49:22):
No?
Speaker 3 (49:23):
His his microphone?
Speaker 2 (49:25):
Boy, if I had a dollar for every time I
wanted to do that.
Speaker 4 (49:27):
John, you know, but no, Honestly, you know a lot
of people last boy, you.
Speaker 2 (49:30):
Know, before you say it in comparison Nicoletti hundred twenty Yeah,
one hundred twenty goals, two hundred and sixty nine points
from eighty two to eighty six, so you finished roughly
thirty points back of him.
Speaker 4 (49:41):
But you know, some people as oh, boy, you know, yeah,
you're getting close to Massics. I'm like, and I've never
told you this, and this is this is honest from
my heart.
Speaker 2 (49:50):
If I would have gotten.
Speaker 4 (49:51):
Close to you, I would have stopped, because there's no
way I would have wanted to surpass the legend that
is John Massich. No, if it was the final four
and we needed a goal to win the championship and
I was a point, then I throw that out. But honestly,
I just there's the respect I have for you is
(50:15):
off the charts, and you know that I don't know.
Speaker 2 (50:18):
I don't even know what else to say, John, I'm
more interested in talking about you, to be perfectly honest.
But at the same time, you're here. What do you
remember about Pat mcletty as a player in the early eighties?
Do you remember the mcletty names out there and wearing
that golden gold for you before mic off?
Speaker 8 (50:36):
I just can't start with a different Mike, Yeah, yeah,
I love it.
Speaker 4 (50:41):
Related, Yes, did you know that?
Speaker 3 (50:43):
I did not know that.
Speaker 4 (50:44):
I did not know that.
Speaker 3 (50:46):
Yeah, how are you too related?
Speaker 8 (50:50):
I don't your mother's side, Yeah yeah, Barley, yep, yep.
There was a message or a mass in their massage.
Speaker 2 (51:00):
Yeah yeah. And so hey, it's my small world.
Speaker 4 (51:04):
I got my scoring ability, right, that's right, you got
some of that mes what exactly exactly?
Speaker 2 (51:09):
So, But yeah, we don't have to talk about me.
Let's talk about him. Tell me a little bit about
what it was like to be a player back in
the fifties. Let's start. Let's go back to your time
in Evelyth, because you had some you were just talking
about your teammates there.
Speaker 3 (51:24):
With the Golphers.
Speaker 2 (51:25):
You had some pretty fun names that I think most
people recognize. In your days with Eveleth, when the Golden
Bears just could not lose, would not lose, and all
they did was hoist state banners.
Speaker 8 (51:35):
Oh we had ablet we think back. We didn't have
to tell them nothing. We went home to eat and sleep. Right,
So what did you do?
Speaker 2 (51:49):
You played?
Speaker 8 (51:49):
All of us? We all played four years to baseball,
three of football. Yeah, what else?
Speaker 2 (51:56):
Should basketball? Whatever I played?
Speaker 8 (51:59):
That was my favorite.
Speaker 2 (52:01):
You know me too, I wanted to do. I wanted
to play.
Speaker 4 (52:03):
I wanted to play high school basketball. And the archer said,
not going to happen, because you know, you got you know, conflicts.
I'm like, well, you know you grew up playing with
your friends, right and you you play everything. It didn't matter,
and that's that's why we became good athletes because of that.
Speaker 8 (52:22):
So we went to the state baseball, yeah, they didn't
have football state right then baseball, of course, hockey. I
went to the state and track.
Speaker 2 (52:34):
I was not the team.
Speaker 8 (52:37):
I hide jumped as kids, we put our own stansa
up crazy and somebody, the coach said, John, we heard
you hide Jim. I said, yeah, said kid, it's unbelievable.
Guess who I'd beaten the region to go to the state.
Speaker 2 (52:53):
It's probably somebody from HIVY. I don't know him.
Speaker 8 (52:59):
Oh yeah, that one tore in ash Walker. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah, okay, wow?
And uh then I went to the state in tennis. Now,
how does say that happen?
Speaker 4 (53:16):
Because you were a kid and you know you played pen.
Speaker 8 (53:19):
Peck after school club. Matchets all the athletes. God, the
best thing you could do for athletes.
Speaker 4 (53:27):
And John Matchets, who he played with, is a cousin
of mine, and he went to Michigan along with Right,
why didn't they go to Minnesota?
Speaker 8 (53:38):
No, scholar? I had a football scholarship.
Speaker 2 (53:40):
Is that right? That's how you became a Gopheren football scholarship?
Speaker 8 (53:44):
Know that?
Speaker 2 (53:45):
Wow?
Speaker 8 (53:46):
Good thing?
Speaker 13 (53:47):
That?
Speaker 2 (53:47):
Did you play football then?
Speaker 7 (53:49):
Or no?
Speaker 2 (53:49):
Who did you play.
Speaker 8 (53:51):
In the ass three years a high school?
Speaker 2 (53:53):
No, it's Minnesota.
Speaker 8 (53:55):
They Professler came into a hockey locker room once after game, John,
come on your defensive back, I said, no, I throwed
the get the hell out of here.
Speaker 2 (54:09):
Oh my gosh, that's good. I did not know that that.
Of course, the legendary voice of John mayssage.
Speaker 3 (54:15):
He's in studio.
Speaker 2 (54:16):
We got the World Juniors coming up at the end
of the year, and we were talking all things about
the Golden Gophers and everything about, uh, what's going on
in his background. We got to talk about his book
as well, John Maysich Immigrant Roots to Olympic Gold I
got the book here right in front of me, written
by Roger.
Speaker 4 (54:30):
Darn that's mine, and he's going to sign it for me.
Speaker 2 (54:34):
On yep. His son said that he had one copy
and he wanted to give it to us, And I said,
you give it to Pat mcoletty. He can sign it
for Pat, put it on his mantle wherever it goes.
Because I could not agree more in these stories. I've
heard name come up a couple of different times, John,
And unfortunately within the last year, we've lost a couple
of big names in Minnesota hockey and USA hockey for
(54:57):
that matter. But Willard Michael is one of them that
I remember in that fedora behind the Dinah Hornets bench.
That's how I grew up watching Willard Akola. You grew
up with Willard Aiklob What was he like as just
a person first of all, but then as a player
and all that other good stuff.
Speaker 8 (55:10):
I spent more time growing up with Willard than with
my twin brother.
Speaker 2 (55:17):
That's crazy. Yeah, that's great.
Speaker 8 (55:20):
He played basketball my twin brother. But think of this.
Anytime I wanted to play catch, I had some for
all football demo. Come on, oh you have to hear
this one? Are you croatian?
Speaker 4 (55:34):
Tell?
Speaker 8 (55:37):
Okay we cover this? Yeah yeah yeah yeah. So anyway, no,
so we that's how we did. Who is the person
from Heaving? He was the defensive prosecuting attorney in the
mansion case.
Speaker 2 (55:56):
Bugliosi bug went my junior year in Vincent. I didn't
know that.
Speaker 8 (56:06):
So my junior year I didn't own the racket love
for I didn't know to count. So I play him
and the district turns out so I beat him, shocking,
So his dad, his dad takes us, takes him to
Florida during his senior year. He came back and won
(56:27):
the state. You know, so he beat me, of course,
and uh I think he was an obituary that he
beat the ho He didn anyways, so that's all that down.
Speaker 4 (56:45):
No, Willard Eichel up right, since you're since we're talking ike,
he and my and Johnny matches. You remember the quad
nippy hockey camp in and right, yeah, we and uh
after that.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
Willard came out to me.
Speaker 4 (57:00):
I was like, pee wee squirter periods time, and he
was seriously said, I want you to come live with me.
And he dining you know, And of course we.
Speaker 2 (57:10):
Laughed at that. You know, my parents laughed at that.
You're not you know, we're not going to let you
go to go down there.
Speaker 4 (57:15):
But but well it was just a gentleman and such
an you know, with that Fedora and the yeah, I
mean just in the great coaching he had and did
it he dined on.
Speaker 2 (57:25):
But just a wonderful person.
Speaker 8 (57:27):
Think of how lucky we were to be shooting at
KLA every Yeah, we never well, we never did drills,
We're all in. All we did was scrimmage. Yeah, so
I'm saying, but Costellano, all right, manchifts right, shooting against
(57:47):
the best, the best gold It was just number one
in the world in fifty six.
Speaker 2 (57:52):
Think of that.
Speaker 8 (57:54):
So then we tell I, maybe how lucky you you had,
right right? So, uh, it's all we did was scrintage.
Speaker 2 (58:03):
Wow.
Speaker 4 (58:04):
Yeah, it's a different time, I mean for sure, And
that's how we developed all our skills too, right, because
it's just you're out.
Speaker 2 (58:11):
There and you're trying different things and you're.
Speaker 4 (58:14):
Not worried about making mistakes and and uh and you know,
you just you.
Speaker 2 (58:18):
Get better, Matt.
Speaker 8 (58:20):
And I could have played baseball, Yeah, no, no, I could.
Speaker 6 (58:23):
Have for sure.
Speaker 4 (58:24):
Well, yeah, you could play football if they let you
throw the ball. Now, here's my question. That's always about it.
And I've probably know that I've probably heard the answer before,
but I forgot.
Speaker 2 (58:33):
Why didn't you go to the NHL?
Speaker 13 (58:38):
What?
Speaker 4 (58:40):
No?
Speaker 8 (58:41):
Here? So I four years after you ye? Uh, they say,
after my final game at the Chad a contract from them.
Speaker 2 (58:53):
Never saw it?
Speaker 8 (58:54):
Never Oh, so that I was in the arrow PC
to you. That's right, so the service, right right, While
in this service, I was able to play in fifty
six Olympics national teams.
Speaker 2 (59:09):
But even after that, and.
Speaker 8 (59:10):
Then after that, well two of the children three children,
you know, yeah, and uh, Stanley Hubbert hub broadcast had
a long, long career right now, ye media, Stanley said,
you want to learn a business, you know?
Speaker 4 (59:28):
Yeah, so maybe yeah.
Speaker 2 (59:32):
Can you manage?
Speaker 4 (59:33):
I mean he would be if you would have played
in the NHL, yeah, he would have been. We'd be saying, okay,
there's a Vetchkin, there's and then there's John Mayson.
Speaker 2 (59:43):
I mean it goes without saying, John, but I didn't
see you play. I mean your game would have translated
the NHL without a doubt. Right, No, But do.
Speaker 14 (59:50):
You think that I wasn't fast enough? I was quick enough,
but not this. Yeah, I'm pointing to my head for
the people. You know, we're not on TV, I'm pointing
to my head.
Speaker 2 (01:00:01):
Yeah. Intelligence, Yeah, you.
Speaker 4 (01:00:03):
Know about the game and where to go, and it
didn't matter.
Speaker 2 (01:00:07):
Your speed was fine. I gotta do this, John, I'm
gonna squeeze in a break, and then when we come back,
we're gonna talk about your book. I want to talk
about some of these other names that I've heard. I
want to hear. I want to hear your thoughts on
John Mariucci. I want to talk Dick Meredith. I want
to talk about we're gonna look ahead to the World
Juniors as well. That's coming here to the State of Hockey.
It'll be in Saint Paul, it'll be in Minneapolis. And
as a guy that represented his country, I know you're
(01:00:28):
looking forward to that that that tournament as well. So
one quick break and then we'll come back the legend
that is John Marucci, along with Pat mccletty joins us
right here. I'm beyond the pond. Beyond the Pond continues
Kevin Falness and Pat mcletty. Very happy to be joined
(01:00:50):
in studio by John Mayisich. I don't. I'm pinching myself
continually and it hurts, but it's good to see John
Mayasich in studio. And before we go in for let's
talk a little bit about this endeavor of yours. You're
an author now, John Maysige, Immigrant Roots to Olympic gold
Roger Dere's a compelling story of an American hockey legend.
(01:01:11):
I think that's very well written, and that's only the cover.
What made you decide to write a book and get
involved in the book writing? I have a feeling that
you are. You were talked into it from looking at
your face. I didn't have much to do with that, okay.
Speaker 8 (01:01:28):
My beloved family was instrumental in selecting Roger Dyer. Okay,
a Green Baidy native who grew up with my family. Yea,
and nothing to do with that. He called me one
day and he said, John, I'm doing your book. I'll
(01:01:48):
be calling you next week. I said, oh, yeah, here
it is.
Speaker 4 (01:01:54):
Yeah, I cannot wait to read it.
Speaker 2 (01:01:56):
Yeah, tell me, tell me that I have you had
a chance you said you had to buy a copy
of your own book. Have you had a chance to
leave through it at all?
Speaker 8 (01:02:03):
Not much?
Speaker 2 (01:02:04):
Okay, not much. It looks like there's some great stories
here about and there's great pictures too, and you talk
about your your life and times, especially from a kid
growing up in Evelyth to the golphers to your time
there as a as an American hero there on the
Olympic stage. I see some great pictures throughout this entire book.
So it looks like it was very well done. Tell
(01:02:24):
me about your your relationship there with Roger Dyer is
a dier.
Speaker 8 (01:02:29):
Roger Dyer his dad was from the Falls. Played high
school hockey with Doherty and Tom Neview and Kern right
right Falls, and he played on the Bobcat team I
coached and played there for ten years. So Roger grew
(01:02:51):
up with son Danton, Mike and Cherry.
Speaker 15 (01:02:55):
Huh.
Speaker 8 (01:02:56):
So no, he did a great job.
Speaker 2 (01:03:00):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:03:00):
The picture on the cover was taken the day after
we won the gold medal, thinking that we had no celebration.
We were in a room this size. They gave us
some medals. I flew home with Green Bay. Wow, that
was a reception that the Austin stroubled one green babe
(01:03:24):
before in the afternoon. Who went to work the next morning?
Speaker 2 (01:03:28):
Yes, that's the way things were, right, Who was who
was on? What?
Speaker 4 (01:03:33):
What big names were on that fifty sixteen I'm no,
I'm testing you well. Jack McCartin, Jack, Oh, Jack, what
a great guy.
Speaker 8 (01:03:44):
Tommy Williams from the Loose, right, Yeah, he roomed with
McCart and me and Dick Merrick. We were in an
army barracks. Think of that. Wow, we had a dress
in the bear and then walked to the arena.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
Think that. No, crazy, unbelievable.
Speaker 4 (01:04:06):
And that was one in Courtina right?
Speaker 3 (01:04:09):
No, just what squad Elie squad nineteen sixty right?
Speaker 2 (01:04:13):
And then the silver in nineteen fifty six.
Speaker 8 (01:04:16):
Roger and Billy Christian in six, Bob Owen from Saint
Louis Park Maybe yeah, oh.
Speaker 2 (01:04:25):
You like that like Orioles. Why why didn't you win
in fifty six?
Speaker 8 (01:04:30):
Uh, you don't want to hear that story. I'd be bragging.
I'd have to No, I.
Speaker 2 (01:04:38):
Want to hear the bragging. Kevin does it all the time. No,
I'm kidding.
Speaker 8 (01:04:42):
We beat We beat Canada and I got.
Speaker 4 (01:04:47):
What three gold Yeah, Okay, continue the story.
Speaker 8 (01:04:52):
Near the end of the game, I came down on
a two on one with Meredith. Yeah. Their defenseman played
it good. I stayed in the middle. Ye, goalie was
kind of moving over towards Meredith. And my big shot
was a backcan So I'm coming in on my backhand.
Speaker 4 (01:05:10):
Which no, which a lot of people cannot do.
Speaker 8 (01:05:13):
But so I had to shoot. I hit the right part,
went behind the goalie, hit the other pipe, and came
up No. So that would have been four. Yeah, and
their top player was behind being speared me behind the
knee happened, Yeah, nice guy. So I was done.
Speaker 2 (01:05:34):
I oh, really I.
Speaker 8 (01:05:36):
Played, but I didn't play. I'm not saying that way. Yeah.
Well that was because your center goes, you know, the
lines effective.
Speaker 2 (01:05:44):
Yeah. So that was nineteen fifty six. But then you
got retribution four years later in Squad Valley and in
what was a fantastic memory for those that were around there,
and they still talk about it. As big as nineteen
eighty was for the American hockey, nineteen sixty was a
pretty big deal.
Speaker 8 (01:05:58):
Yeah. Well, what people don't realize in squad balley sixty
gold medal, we played every team, Okay, we beat Canada,
we beat Russia. Wow, So I'm not saying eighty Yeah. Yeah,
they had the pools in the eighty and they never
played Canada.
Speaker 4 (01:06:18):
And in the US back then too was I mean,
I don't know if you guys were the big underdag
but oh yeah we were.
Speaker 2 (01:06:25):
Oh were you?
Speaker 4 (01:06:26):
I mean, but the US and eighty there was there's like, yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:06:31):
There's no chance versus verity, and they pulled it off.
So I didn't know you guys Okay, I thought you
guys maybe were.
Speaker 4 (01:06:37):
A little bit.
Speaker 8 (01:06:38):
No, they figured the if we won the bronze and
really in sixty yeah, can you can.
Speaker 4 (01:06:46):
You imagine the hype it would have, you know, with.
Speaker 3 (01:06:50):
Television, social media.
Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
I don't even know social media was going on back No,
I don't.
Speaker 3 (01:06:56):
It wasn't, No, it was not.
Speaker 4 (01:06:58):
But there was TV, national TV, and it was you know, yeah, Paul,
were the Russians back in the fifties, sixties, they were
in the same I mean they were strong. Yeah, well
they yeah, they and that was the best they had. Yeah,
that's the voice of it.
Speaker 8 (01:07:17):
They looked over sir, you know.
Speaker 2 (01:07:19):
Yeah, yeah, the voice of John. They're not looking over
us anymore. And especially because of what you guys did
in nineteen sixty with the Americans, and Hervey did in
nineteen eighty, so on and so forth.
Speaker 3 (01:07:28):
We're talking to John Mayasich. A couple of names that
have come up.
Speaker 2 (01:07:32):
We already talked about Willard Aikla, but you mentioned Dick
Meredith too. Another guy who unfortunately passed away in the
last calendar year.
Speaker 4 (01:07:39):
Williamson Murrayah, No, another one, very great, just great people,
great people.
Speaker 2 (01:07:45):
What can you tell us about Dick Meredith in particular,
because I know that's a guy that I've seen this
saw around Saint Paul quite a bit in my time
with the Minnesota Wild Well.
Speaker 8 (01:07:53):
I played against Southwest in the state tournament, okay, and
they were opens as good as any of us. Yeah,
the goaltending was weak, and I think we beat him.
I don't know eleven seven well a Meredith And I'm
not bragging, but.
Speaker 3 (01:08:16):
It's a history lesson story.
Speaker 2 (01:08:18):
How did you get that night?
Speaker 8 (01:08:19):
I think six seven seventh was shadowing me.
Speaker 13 (01:08:25):
It was.
Speaker 2 (01:08:25):
Yeah, so he said.
Speaker 8 (01:08:28):
God you you weren't there? Anymore, and I looked, I
went back on defense. I played the whole game.
Speaker 2 (01:08:35):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:08:35):
Well, so I tell people that Dick got Holds the
assist in the Stig tournament that covered me.
Speaker 2 (01:08:44):
Yeah right, that's great.
Speaker 8 (01:08:46):
So we laugh. We laughed, And then you were teammates
four years year and then he was on my line
in the fifty six. He was on the team and uh,
what's her coach?
Speaker 2 (01:09:03):
Just name again?
Speaker 8 (01:09:04):
West Point? Uh Riley Riley? Right, he didn't he didn't play. Really,
it didn't play the whole turn.
Speaker 3 (01:09:12):
I'm gonna bring something up. This might get me in trouble.
Speaker 2 (01:09:14):
But if I was going to bring up the Mount
Rushmore of golden gold for hockey, I've got two of
them in here in studio. Another guy might be her Brooks.
And the fourth guy on that list, in my mind,
has to be John Marucci. I didn't know John Merriucci
anywhere near like you guys, did you got you gotta go?
Speaker 13 (01:09:29):
No.
Speaker 8 (01:09:29):
I know.
Speaker 2 (01:09:35):
I made myself. I know I'm gonna get in trouble
by even doing that. But two of the four of
the top names are the four guys that I just named.
And and when I talk about John Mariucci, He's a
legendary name, you know, like John Maya says, like Pat mclady,
like her Brooks. Uh, I didn't know John Mariucci as
a coach, as a player or anything. As a person.
You knew John Marucci. His name is on that building
(01:09:57):
and has been for humpty million decades. Shout on campus.
Tell me about John mary Ucci, the person, the coach,
and the friend.
Speaker 8 (01:10:07):
I grew up in Neblet. Mary Ucci grew up in
grim Sick, you know. Yeah, Brimso I didn't know him.
I never saw him growing up.
Speaker 14 (01:10:18):
Uh.
Speaker 8 (01:10:18):
He used to come back to tablet in the summers.
We were in high school and we had a softball
team mate, all of us, and we play against these
hockey players, pros that came back to the summer. Brim
Sick catch fastball without a mask on think at that.
(01:10:41):
So we had that, We had that relationship with them,
and of course Rooche with the Blackhawks. And yet he
was a great softball player. Yeah and his uh brother
we called them Dagle.
Speaker 4 (01:10:57):
Everybody had nickname Sam prest Son Pete.
Speaker 8 (01:11:01):
Yes, of course you know our starts great. He played softball.
All we had that relationship with these pros. Yeah, but
March as a coach. Uh, he didn't teach you individual skills.
Speaker 15 (01:11:22):
I had Doc Romin know if you guys, I had
him for one year in Minnesota, and the things he
kind of refined and taught little flip past things set
like that.
Speaker 8 (01:11:36):
And the only coach I ever had that did that
with me, Well, I.
Speaker 2 (01:11:40):
Would leave you alone.
Speaker 8 (01:11:42):
Was a systems guy.
Speaker 2 (01:11:44):
Okay, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 8 (01:11:45):
Yeah, defense you passed up. You get it, pad up.
So he had a system that work. You stated the
hell out of you and you know condition Yeah. Uh no,
he was special. I was lucky. I think can't son
more as assistant.
Speaker 2 (01:12:06):
As he did?
Speaker 8 (01:12:07):
Yes, he did.
Speaker 2 (01:12:07):
So he rock Glyndon Minnesota, Right, John, you said that
Mariucci's name should be on that building. It belongs there,
and that's there's a reason why we hold that name
in such high regard. What is it? Put it in
words if you can, John Marucci, why he deserves to
have his name on that building.
Speaker 8 (01:12:27):
Well, Number one, he's from Minnesota, went to the University
of Minnesota, played football there, built the program. Look what
he did with the whole program, and he had a vision.
On Mariucci. It could be a parking lot or an intersection.
Don't do that, and it's not because he used my
(01:12:50):
coach or from edleth or nothing to do that. How
do you have some Swede comment he liked hockey, so
you know, twelve.
Speaker 2 (01:12:59):
Dollars incredible respects. Yeah, no doubt about it. And that
name will be on there for many many years. It
already has been and it will continue to be.
Speaker 13 (01:13:08):
Uh.
Speaker 2 (01:13:09):
I want to let you go on this note. With
the World Juniors coming here, the Olympics coming up next
year as well in Milan, it's an opportunity here to
see the Red, white and Blue in action.
Speaker 3 (01:13:21):
We love that and especially having the World Juniors.
Speaker 2 (01:13:23):
Here in our backyard. Let's go to the head coach. Yes,
it doesn't happen all that often where we get them
in our backyard. I know it's going to be a
special tournament. I want to know for you what it
meant to you. I know you love being an Evele
with golden beer. You loved wearing the Universe form for
the Golden Golphers, but wearing the red, white and blue
and representing the United States.
Speaker 3 (01:13:41):
What did that mean to you, John Mayasich.
Speaker 8 (01:13:43):
That's special. Yeah, I look back people. The first question
what's your biggest thrill in then? And at Western State Championships,
sir go first winning a gold medal, standing on that
blue line, seeing that flag go up in the national
(01:14:03):
man wow, yea yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:14:05):
Just put yourself in that case eyes and put yourself
in that in this.
Speaker 8 (01:14:11):
The sing I wanted to sing. In fact, I was
in the high school choir. I had lessons and in
the book it mentions Frank Massich was saying.
Speaker 16 (01:14:24):
Yeah, well, looking at your family, Frank mash.
Speaker 8 (01:14:35):
Yeah, well that one more thing, yes, And I don't
know what do you pat But my parents never saw
me play.
Speaker 2 (01:14:44):
No, I thank you.
Speaker 4 (01:14:46):
My my father worked seven six, seven days a week,
and my mom would my mom would come, you know
when she could have, you know, because all the other
kids were gone. I'm the youngest of nine, right, so
she could come because she'd have to take care of
the rest of them. And but my dad made sure
that my mother got to every game, and you know,
(01:15:07):
and that that's.
Speaker 2 (01:15:08):
But my dad, you know, you just you play, go
to work, go to work, and then come on, how'd
you do?
Speaker 4 (01:15:14):
We won?
Speaker 2 (01:15:15):
We lost?
Speaker 4 (01:15:15):
I played good, I played bad, but that was it.
And you know, that's that's the big difference now is
the parents are I think too overly involved and you
know that, you know, instead of just letting their kids
play and enjoy it. But that's a conversation for another day. No,
but there should be discussed. Yeah, it should.
Speaker 8 (01:15:38):
And I tell parents, uh, don't push follow. Yes that's all.
Speaker 3 (01:15:45):
That's a very well stated and that's the answer.
Speaker 2 (01:15:49):
Yes, don't push follow. Great words of advice.
Speaker 8 (01:15:52):
Twelve months a year. My gosh, I'm not playing baseball,
you know you And.
Speaker 4 (01:16:00):
Guess what, John, we were better hockey players because we
played every year. Our hand we all did right our hand,
eye coordination, our you know, you're you know, just think
about it. If you're if you're up at the plate
and you know it's two out and you know you
got two strikes on you.
Speaker 17 (01:16:20):
You know, you don't feel pressure because you know you've
been through everything. But pat take of this with consolidation
of schools, yes, like Live Virginia.
Speaker 2 (01:16:31):
Don't even know.
Speaker 8 (01:16:32):
So these kids play hockey all their youth and they
get into that situation a senior and they don't make
the team and then what you know what what happened? Yeah,
all of that's but I I think to my parents,
(01:16:54):
my mother. Actually, they were doing a deal in still
Water about the documentary. Yeah, and I said something about
my mother never saw me play, And all of a sudden,
this image playing street hockey. Yes, and I looked up
(01:17:14):
at our hosts was right there here. She was just
her face and I see it to this day. Yeah,
and I started bawling. Yeah it continue to documentary. Yeah, yeah, wow,
think of that.
Speaker 2 (01:17:27):
Unbelievable.
Speaker 3 (01:17:28):
Well, what a story and stories like that available in
this book.
Speaker 2 (01:17:31):
Get them anywhere you get your books, Amazon or bookstore
if those still exist. John Maysich, Immigrant Roots to Olympic Gold,
Roger deer Dier, Roger Dyer, his compelling story of an
American hockey legend. Check that out at your earliest convenience.
Good stuff. And I mean, I can't tell you how
(01:17:52):
much I love this. Forty five minutes with a couple
of goal for legends, including John Maysich. Thank you to you,
thank you to your family for bringing you in. And
here's your book back. Thank you.
Speaker 3 (01:18:03):
We can definitely do that once we go to break.
He doesn't have to do it right now.
Speaker 4 (01:18:06):
Oh I know, but I don't want my book.
Speaker 2 (01:18:09):
I'm gonna let you sign up. I'm just gonna say John,
thank you very much for coming in. This has been
a treat for us, for myself selfishly, and I think
for our listeners. It's been great to have you on
the airwaves here in studio in person to talk about
the life and times of John Mayasich.
Speaker 8 (01:18:22):
Well Kevi.
Speaker 4 (01:18:23):
What a hero, what a friend, what just it's just
unbelievable to have him man, and we appreciate it so much.
Speaker 2 (01:18:32):
And there he goes.
Speaker 3 (01:18:32):
John Mayasich will take a break. We got youth hockey
coming your way.
Speaker 2 (01:18:35):
We're also taking you up till twelve thirty, so we'll
continue with your talkbacks, your text messages and so on
and so forth. We'll get back into the wild conversation
as well. But hopefully you enjoyed the last forty five
minutes with John Mayisich.
Speaker 3 (01:18:46):
I'll be on the pond in the final half hour.
Speaker 2 (01:18:53):
We'll get back to the wild conversation the National Hockey League.
We'll get back to your talkbacks, your text messages and
all that other good stuff. We're going to give away
a pair of random tickets too, maybe a couple of
pair of tickets to tonight's game with a while taking
on the Buffalo Sabers in Saint Paul again. We'll get
back to that. We got an extra half hour today
going up to the Golden Gopher football pregame show with
(01:19:14):
Guardsy Grimm and Darryl Thompson. So it gives us an
opportunity to get back to the pros and everything that's
going great with this wild team this season.
Speaker 3 (01:19:21):
But I mean, how do you the last forty five minutes?
Speaker 2 (01:19:24):
How good was that?
Speaker 4 (01:19:25):
Kudos to you for for lining him up and getting
him in ninety three?
Speaker 2 (01:19:31):
Did he say ninety three.
Speaker 3 (01:19:32):
Ninety two years old, ninety three from velous yep?
Speaker 2 (01:19:35):
Did you see how he looked? I know, I know
what you know. I say the same thing about Tom Ray.
Tom Rey's not ninety two. But that's not a guy
I want to wrestle. No, I don't want to wrestle
John Manstich. I think he would take me down. How lucky. Well,
I'm just to not I was in the company at
two Gopher legs, not one.
Speaker 4 (01:19:53):
I mean him, I mean, he's just un unbelievable and
what a gentleman, you know it just he's always been
that way, and oh my gosh, that was fun. Now,
how do you replace how do you. How do you
follow him?
Speaker 2 (01:20:06):
I don't know. Well, we're gonna have the opportunity here.
No pressure there, Tony Scott and youth hockey up, but
you're following Gop for royalty here. Welcome to the season
debut will beyond the pons and we really enjoyed doing
last year talking youth hockey, and I will get an
opportunity to touch base with you once again.
Speaker 3 (01:20:23):
Well, first and foremost, welcome to the show.
Speaker 2 (01:20:25):
And what do you think of the conversation with a
couple of goats going back and forth here in the
f KFA and studios.
Speaker 7 (01:20:32):
Don't push follow I wrote it down.
Speaker 2 (01:20:35):
That was great, wasn't it?
Speaker 6 (01:20:36):
Long?
Speaker 3 (01:20:38):
That was good stuff?
Speaker 2 (01:20:38):
What great lesson?
Speaker 7 (01:20:39):
I mean, think about it. You see all these parents,
I see him every day right right, and sooner, sooner
they learned that they don't push them better, the kid's
going to be off long term.
Speaker 2 (01:20:49):
I think, just let him play and have fun, right,
I agree, good lesson for everyone. Really enjoyed our conversations
from last year, and the feedback was so great because
we do spend a lot of time, especially on the
pro level and the college level. But you're a guy
that's got boots on the ground on the youth level.
And I we follow you on Twitter and the youth
Hockey of on Twitter, and you guys are everywhere and
(01:21:11):
anywhere at any given time.
Speaker 3 (01:21:13):
So what's going on in your world these days?
Speaker 7 (01:21:16):
Well, Kevin, this is the busiest weekend of the regular season,
if you think about it.
Speaker 8 (01:21:20):
He has all the high.
Speaker 7 (01:21:20):
School teams playing, all the youth teams playing, and there's
like twelve or fourteen tournaments, you know, champions crown tomorrow.
So there's a lot on the line at the youth level.
And then the high school boys and girls are now
under well on their way and having some good hockey games.
Speaker 4 (01:21:34):
Hey, Tony before we continue, And this is something that's
been on my mind, and I know Zach Elverson brought
it up on Twitter and it kind of kind of
just like, man, the cost of playing hockey is outrageously.
Kevin knows he's got kids, you know, Oh, Expenser, what
(01:21:54):
can we do, Tony? And you you've got boots on
the ground, and I mean, this is your life. What
can we do to lower the cost of you know,
for kids, whether it be equipment playing you know, I
mean we always talk about it, but nothing ever happens.
And so that's my question to you.
Speaker 7 (01:22:15):
Well, I think that's that's the kind of a two parter.
Pat First of all, the while is doing a skate
of Forward program this year, which is gonna be great
because they're gonna focus on lesser programs out there like
Winona and Roseville and Armstrong Cooper and get some of
those areas that really need to push, like Wilmer, Minnesota.
So that's one thing. On Hockey Day Minnesota, they're gonna
(01:22:36):
have a program. They're gonna have a matching program with
Tria where you can make a donation that day and
sure you will match it. So that's a fantastic program
right there. And then the other hand is how can
we make it cheaper? Yes, they know to people like me,
for Krayoul, I have something offered every day in the offseason.
You don't have to do every program. You can shoot bucks,
(01:22:57):
you can do stick handling in the basement. There's a
lot of other things you can do that are low
cost and free or free, and that's what you got
to really focus.
Speaker 4 (01:23:05):
And then here, okay, here's my question too. Right, you know,
I don't even know if they exist anymore, but I
know the cost of these sticks that it's outrageous, right,
those in skates, But are there is there a Are
there are wood sticks even available anymore? Because I would
assume that they would be cheaper. And why can't these
(01:23:27):
kids that are younger use them?
Speaker 7 (01:23:31):
That's what I cannot answer that question. I think a
kid twelve and unders should be using a wooden stick,
but they wouldn't be caught deadly.
Speaker 2 (01:23:38):
No, they would. And that's that's it, Tony. I know.
And again I got a ban them, and I got
a high schooler, and I tell my ban them in particularly,
and while they were growing up, I said, go out
there and break a branch off the tree and you're
going to get the same results as well. You're paying
for that three hundred and fifty dollars stick. You're not
in the National Hockey League. You're not. It probably makes
a difference for Alex Ovechkin or a career, but.
Speaker 3 (01:24:03):
At that age, no, you're just passing right.
Speaker 7 (01:24:07):
But I'll never forget it was about about ten twelve
years ago my son was going to Chuck Gerrillo's Minnesota
hockey camp up in this walk and they would shoot
pucks on the tents, courts, and they would always they
recommended the letter say hey, get a wooden sticks where
they can shoot bucks, and so they can just ruin
that stick, and so they're owning their good sticks. So
we stopped the sporting good store and brainer and I
got got a wood stick. He goes, what's that for.
(01:24:28):
I'm like, well, you're gonna shoot bucks with this all week.
He goes, I'm not shooting that thing at all. He
was thirteen years old, and he just brushed me off.
I'm like, well, here's your stick. I'll see you in
a week.
Speaker 4 (01:24:38):
Yeah, but we have to find a way to get
more because for a lot of people.
Speaker 2 (01:24:46):
In this economy and you know economies.
Speaker 4 (01:24:49):
In the past and whatever, right, it's very, very expensive
to play this sport. And you know, I just wish
we could do something instead of talk about it, right,
do something so you know we're we're all on the
same level, and you know.
Speaker 2 (01:25:05):
We go and go out and do it.
Speaker 7 (01:25:07):
All.
Speaker 3 (01:25:07):
Right, Well, let's we'll put it anyway.
Speaker 7 (01:25:09):
I can spend that question to a positive bat, I
really can't. If you're if you're looking to place the
sports cheap, you you're in the right state because our
rice is half the cost of the other forty nine states.
Speaker 4 (01:25:21):
That's very true.
Speaker 7 (01:25:22):
We're doing it. We have great programs out there, we
have volunteer coaches, great volunteer coaches. I reaped this morning
and there's Kellen Briggs on one bench and I can't
think his first name is Kulova, last name either U
and B guy on one bench and a golfer on
the other bench. You can't get that in any other
state United States.
Speaker 4 (01:25:39):
Now, listen for all the great things we do and
then and I'm not, you know, trying to be a
downer on this. I just wish that we could do
something to make it more affordable for everybody.
Speaker 2 (01:25:50):
I'm with you, something to work on for sure. And
great minds have it in their back pocket. In Pat
mcletty and Tony Scott Youth Hockey Hub get to some
of the highlights from a busy night last night in
high school hockey.
Speaker 7 (01:26:04):
Yeah it was. It was kind of a boys' night.
Was all the good games were on the boys side,
and all the good games I think today are on
the girls side. So we'll just stick to with it.
Taka beat preseason number three Rogers last night, three to nothing.
Rogers off to a very slow start. They have some
of the best players in the state. They're one and three.
You're Hiving blue Jackets beat Night. You're number one in
(01:26:25):
Class A, yeah, number one in double Yeah, number one
in Double A. More Head beat World five to three.
Now here's my hot take of the day. I can't push,
don't follow, but here's my hot take of the day.
If Hermantown beats gil Murray today, the top five teams
in Class A pounder pound are better than the top five.
Speaker 2 (01:26:45):
WOA.
Speaker 4 (01:26:46):
Yes, I like that Hiving team. Last year was a
very young team and so, uh they've got some growth.
So I'm I'm I'm pushing.
Speaker 2 (01:26:58):
The Blue Jackets.
Speaker 7 (01:27:00):
Yeah, they're gonna they're gonna be very good. And so
on the girls side, there's some good games today.
Speaker 8 (01:27:04):
Uh.
Speaker 7 (01:27:04):
Five, this is great. Five double a Taka trials an
hour and a half to Dodge County to play in
the little barn down there in Casson Mansterville near in Casamano.
That will be fun for the people in Dodge County.
They're gonna we're really looking forward to that. And then
number three Centennial travels out the Holy Family. Number two,
that'll be a great game. And my favorite, like the
Midgie coming three and a half hours down to the
(01:27:26):
Twin Cities to play Banil today. Those will be three
great girl games. And then on the boys side, Grand
Rapids plays Maple Grove and like I mentioned, Hermantown and
Hill Murray will get after it today over at.
Speaker 2 (01:27:38):
Aldrich outstanding that great stuff coming up all all, all
day long, all weekend long, because you still got some
other tournaments going on throughout.
Speaker 3 (01:27:47):
The course of the weekend.
Speaker 2 (01:27:48):
So I love catching up with you again, Tony, and
I look forward to our weekly conversations.
Speaker 7 (01:27:53):
No sweat. Thanks for having me on guys.
Speaker 2 (01:27:55):
Thanks to Tony Scott Youth Hockey Hub youth hockeyhub dot com.
Speaker 4 (01:27:59):
He does some great Oh my god, they're they're unbelievable.
Speaker 2 (01:28:01):
Yeah, I mean, and he doesn't have all the answers,
but he'll try. Yeah, it's we're talking about. That's what
my day consists of. I'm going right from here. I
think I'm going to Woodbury for the band of tournament.
I am going to Blaine. You're right. How do you know?
Speaker 3 (01:28:18):
Because you told me you're right.
Speaker 2 (01:28:19):
I'm going to Blaine first, and then I'm going to
Woodbury because it'll be closer to Saint Paul.
Speaker 3 (01:28:23):
So I'm doing a big circle around. I mean it's
like going here, gone.
Speaker 2 (01:28:26):
All day and then yeah, all day, and then and
then all night and then tonight because the Wild host
the Buffalo Sabers will be in same Paula. I'll be
sitting on my chair and I know you will, and
you're thinking about how nice and warm and toasty you are,
as I traveled two different but I will change you
for the word.
Speaker 4 (01:28:40):
Tonight We've got We've got the Wild at seven, yeah,
and then the Gophers at eight thirty.
Speaker 2 (01:28:46):
Go for hockey tonight from Paul Arena for the US
Hockey Hall of Fame game. Yes, yes, against du So. Yeah.
A good A good active date. Well, any day in
sports is good, and I think today will be no different.
Good day to be on the couch if you can
do it, Hopefully, maybe I'll see at a barn, whether
it's in Blaine, Woodbury or Saint Paul.
Speaker 3 (01:29:04):
Tonight, you have an opportunity to be in Saint Paul tonight.
Speaker 2 (01:29:07):
Wild they're taking on the Buffalo Savers and we're giving
away a couple of random tickets. The only way you
can get them is either text at six four six
eighty six. You can use that talkback feature, or you
could get off your wallet and can go to Wild
dot com slash tickets.
Speaker 3 (01:29:20):
Any of those options are available.
Speaker 2 (01:29:22):
But we'll get back into Gopher and National Hockey League
conversation next. I'm Beyond the Pond fan.
Speaker 11 (01:29:32):
Guys, Papa Taco here, I am an average Wild fan.
You know, growing up as a young Taco didn't have
the money to play hockey, so I can't say, you know,
I'm a full blown diehard fan, but I love the
team and I'm just curious, as an average fan, how
excited should I be for this club this year?
Speaker 8 (01:29:51):
I know in the years past they've they've.
Speaker 11 (01:29:53):
Broken all of our hearts and what are your thoughts
on that?
Speaker 8 (01:29:56):
How excited should we be?
Speaker 11 (01:29:58):
I mean, carill is great.
Speaker 2 (01:30:03):
Keep those talkbacks coming. We'll give away a couple of
random tickets.
Speaker 4 (01:30:07):
Great question.
Speaker 3 (01:30:08):
Yeah, how excited.
Speaker 2 (01:30:09):
Should they be? Patrick? I, like I said again to
reset the stage here when we talk about how we
opened up the season debut of Beyond the Pond, it
couldn't have been The atmosphere couldn't have been worse around
that team when they had dropped that last game to
the Penguins, on October thirtieth.
Speaker 3 (01:30:26):
That was the tipping point.
Speaker 2 (01:30:28):
They had lost nine to twelve in the month of
October to open the season. There were injuries that were
piling up, they weren't getting results. The goaltending was porous,
they weren't getting the goal scoring. The defense was shoddy,
as bad as it's been in recent memory. But something
clicked at the end of that game at whatever happened
in the closed door meeting, that happened the day after
(01:30:50):
the Halloween party, whatever you want to attribute it to,
something snapped in that team in the month of November.
Because since that loss where they dropped nine to twelve
this year, they are now eleven one and one in
the month of November. They're not beating up on the
dirt bags of the National Hockey League. They're beating Colorado, Winnipeg, Vegas, Carolina.
(01:31:11):
Go down the list of what they've done in the
month of November. This isn't smoking mirrors, this isn't a mirage.
This is what they've been able to cobble together. Here
been because their best players have been their best players,
their defensive structure has been sound, and their goaltending has
been probably the best in the league, and the effort
is there every night.
Speaker 4 (01:31:32):
Now that being said, okay, they've built up all this
confidence in November.
Speaker 2 (01:31:38):
They but remember they did the same thing last year.
Speaker 9 (01:31:41):
I know.
Speaker 3 (01:31:42):
Okay, and that's what the caller of the talkbacker is
referring to.
Speaker 4 (01:31:46):
So here's my I caution people, because you have so
many highs and so many lows throughout the season. The
ones that stay steady, you know, don't let a two
game losing streak make it three, four or five, you know,
(01:32:08):
And so I think consistency is going to be key. Obviously,
injuries are going to be key. That happens, that's something
that you can't control. But you're right. You know, your boldies,
your your top guys are are at that level, and
so you know, I just think staying can see if
(01:32:29):
they can stay consistent.
Speaker 2 (01:32:31):
Big key, which is my X factor, is the goaltending.
And it's been awesome. And now you have two guys battling.
Speaker 4 (01:32:39):
I love that because they push each other and they
both they both want to be at their best every night.
Speaker 2 (01:32:45):
And when you get that, that's where your consistency comes in.
And so you know, a long way Togo great.
Speaker 4 (01:32:52):
November, you know, and let's just hope, hope that we
don't get That's why I'd like to see another player
brought in at some point.
Speaker 2 (01:33:01):
But you know, we'll see two part question for you,
and I'll open it up to Brett blakemore as well
to talkback as the text messengers can get involved as well.
We saw Nathan McKinnon last night and a lot of
people point to Connor McDavid as the best player in
the National Hockey League and for a good reason. How
far behind is Nathan McKinnon. It feels to me like
he's making a real good push to be the number
(01:33:21):
one guy in the NHL. I'm going to change that
a little bit. Okay, all closest, Coroka, Well, that was
going to be the second part of my question to me.
There's no doubt Coroll Caprice I was in the conversation
as a top five player in the NHL. I don't
care what order you want to put him, but he's
in the top five's top three. Well he's not top
ten anymore, he's top five, and if you want to
(01:33:42):
elevate him to the top three, So you're saying McKinnon,
McDavid and caprisa would you take ahead of CAPRISA. I
don't know. At one point I thought it was dry title.
At one point I thought, yeah, you know, Matthews would
have been in that conversation at one point. Anymore anymore,
you know, Michael's unbelievable. I eat that on a daily basis. Well,
(01:34:02):
Capriceoff is unbelievable.
Speaker 7 (01:34:04):
He is.
Speaker 4 (01:34:05):
I mean, you want a big goal, you turn it
in ninety seven. Either he's setting it up or he's
or scoring. It's he's top three for me, answer my
first question. First laughed at. I got laughed at when
he first came in the league.
Speaker 2 (01:34:21):
Yeah, because I said stop ten already? Wow? Who Yeah?
And I feel like I take some heat when I
say he's a top five talent now. His first game, Yes,
the overtime winner against LA Yes, very first game in
the National Hockey League. He scores in all the time
for that because you were working. But I was up
for the two. It was a late game, wasn't it. Yes, Well,
(01:34:41):
I think even John Maya said ninety two years old,
he was up for it. It was one of those
I really do. I really think Caprice offt and that's
why he's put him in the top three.
Speaker 5 (01:34:52):
Yes, I would Brett Blake bar I mean, I remember,
I would I'd be hard pressed to not at least
be top five, is not pushing the top three. I
remember being in at the time the X for the
first non COVID Carill game where the first time he
touched the puck on his first shift top over the
boards and it was almost it was just the whole
(01:35:13):
arena just going are you kidding me? You know, the
feeling when we talk about the Avalanche. That was one
of the first games that I remember where he was
did that little roulette.
Speaker 2 (01:35:22):
Wheel where he got on his edges and did that
that tomahawk thing around the top of the And I
remember because I remember hearing Moser called he he lost
his breath watching He's like, what the.
Speaker 3 (01:35:32):
Hell is he doing? No, And that's everyone's trying to
do it.
Speaker 2 (01:35:36):
Yeah, the kids are doing it. Okay, I'm watching it.
They are, They're trying it there. Connor mcgahey thought it
was kind of overrated.
Speaker 8 (01:35:43):
He has the deal.
Speaker 4 (01:35:44):
What do you have a guy like capriceoft which also
gives hope for Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (01:35:49):
Yeah, is that you Well, you have a chance to
win every night. And not only that, I mean, and
I know we we use this Batman and Robin thing
too much. But when you've got Caprice I as your
batman and Boldies, you're and they don't have to play
on the same line. Boy, what a luxury that is
for John Hines to And not only that, but that
second line that he's playing on right now. Say what
you will about Johansen, but you got Johansson ak, you
(01:36:11):
got Boldie playing some phenomenal two way hockey. And when
you got Boldie playing at the level he is to
compliment Coroll Caprice on that top line, I mean, that's
it's the best of both worlds. Then you're getting the
great defensive structure, not just the blue line, but the
team is a whole playing defensively sound, and then you're
getting world class goaltending to go with it. I mean,
(01:36:32):
it's just like the perfect recipe. And it's all culminated
here in November.
Speaker 4 (01:36:35):
And all Eric Sineck is doing is shutting down the
top player of him nightly, every.
Speaker 2 (01:36:40):
Night, nightly.
Speaker 3 (01:36:41):
And but that's what happened in October.
Speaker 2 (01:36:43):
October I against him October. They had guys running over him,
those those young, fast teams, and that's where they were
getting a little loosey goosey, and now something has snapped
in the month of November where they've got back to
their structure and whatever John Hines has been teaching them,
they're exhibiting it each and every night. But on a
nightly basis, he's going against the top teams, in the
(01:37:04):
top players in the National Hockey League, in those top lines,
and they are shutting them down. And that includes Maclin Celebrini,
who a lot of people are calling the next Gretzky
type player, which shut them down the last time that
they played.
Speaker 4 (01:37:16):
And here's the deal and which people need to understand,
is that don't look at points, don't look at goals
and assists, especially for your bottom six, because Minnesota wins
because they follow the structure. And their structure is, you know,
take care of your own end, you know, and and
and make sure your check in, you're make sure you're
(01:37:38):
doing everything right, don't cheat the game.
Speaker 2 (01:37:41):
And they don't cheat the.
Speaker 4 (01:37:42):
Game, and that's why they're winning. And the hence when
you do. When you when you play the way Minnesota does,
you're not gonna be this high offensive juggernaut.
Speaker 2 (01:37:53):
Of a team.
Speaker 4 (01:37:54):
You're gonna be structured, you're gonna be you're gonna be
tight your own end. Yet you're gonna have the ability
with the offensive guys that they have to be creative
in the offensive zone. And so don't get mad when
Trent and doesn't have fifteen goals or Felino or Nico
Sturm or you know guys like that, because they're doing
their job and what.
Speaker 2 (01:38:15):
They're told to do, and they're playing within that.
Speaker 4 (01:38:18):
Now, they could go out there and say, well, I'm
gonna take chances, I'm gonna do this, I'm gonna do that,
and lo and behold, the buck's gonna be in our
net because they're not playing that that way.
Speaker 2 (01:38:29):
They are playing that way right now, and guess what
they're winning. Top guy in the NHL right now. McDavid
or McKinnon, Who do you want, CAPRICEO. But if you
have to pick between those two guys, I'm just curious
because everyone tells me McDavid's the number one guy in
the National Hockey League, And for my money, I'd take
Nathan McKinnon. And I love Connor McDade. There's not a
(01:38:49):
wrong answer, but I'm telling you this guy is an
a hole.
Speaker 3 (01:38:55):
I can say he use an a hole. I mean
the way he plays the game.
Speaker 2 (01:38:58):
This guy is rough, he's top, he's multifaceted, he's incredibly talented,
and he's got a bird in his saddle.
Speaker 3 (01:39:05):
I think he'd be your type of player.
Speaker 4 (01:39:06):
Yeah, you know why because he doesn't care if he's
got a friend on the other team, He's going to
go right through.
Speaker 3 (01:39:11):
Him and he will throttle it.
Speaker 4 (01:39:16):
And I think if mccarr was on the on Edmonton, uh,
him and McDavid together would be If mccarr was on
mccarr was on Edmonton and him and McDavid were teammates,
I think that makes a huge difference to I think,
(01:39:37):
you know, like McKinnon and mccarr.
Speaker 2 (01:39:40):
You know, who do what do you cover?
Speaker 7 (01:39:43):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:39:43):
I mean just se see McCarry yesterday. I mean, my god,
he's phenomenal right, and so can so.
Speaker 4 (01:39:50):
I don't know, you know, they're both, they're both, they're
one in one A. I don't know which. What are
you taking? You're taking Brett?
Speaker 5 (01:40:01):
I mean, I mean, there is no wrong answer. No,
But McKinnon's making a really good problem really this year. Yeah,
and guess what team Canada doesn't have to choose when
it comes to the Olympics.
Speaker 2 (01:40:10):
They can just get boltimm Yeah, just sad. All right,
let's squeeze in a break. We got we'll take you
to the bottom of the hour. We got Golden Golf
for football coming up in a couple of hours. They
got that extended pregame starting at twelve thirty with Guardsy
Grim and Darryl Thompson and the rest of them. So
we'll make way for that. But we got one more
segment to get in your talkbacks, your text anything and everything,
random texts, random tickets going out the window. Coming up
(01:40:31):
here in a little bit as we will send you
to see the Wild and Sabers tonight in Saint Paul.
Get your own tickets at wild dot com slash tickets.
One more segment of Beyond the Pond. Next. Daniel from
(01:40:52):
an Alaska.
Speaker 13 (01:40:53):
Wisconsin, wondering if a hockey roster made up of players
either born in Minnesota or played call college in Minnesota
can make up a competitive team in the NHL.
Speaker 2 (01:41:06):
I think that's pretty easy, Patrick, Yes, I mean yeah,
you grab a good chunk of American born well, he said,
Minnesotan's right, or played at the University of Minnesota. Yeah,
I mean well, he even said played college in Minnesota.
How many that could be?
Speaker 7 (01:41:22):
Brett?
Speaker 4 (01:41:22):
How many guys from Minnesota do you know are in
the NHL.
Speaker 2 (01:41:27):
I don't know what the number is, but I don't
know the number either. It can start list of a
good number. Thirty start with yeah, favor, it's got to
be for sure, thirty thirty to forty in the comb
favor on d that's pretty pretty good start there. Throw
out in during goal, Oh my god, right, yes, sir,
and then goal. That's truly Any number of guys you
(01:41:49):
want to you can't throw cool And he played it
to you the part according to these rules he played
at the University of.
Speaker 5 (01:41:54):
Minnesota back rules. Yeah, if they played college here. But
if we're just going Minnesotan's would be harder. But you
could still do it.
Speaker 2 (01:42:00):
Could do it. He could still do it.
Speaker 3 (01:42:03):
Of course you could do it. Yeah, I mean yeah,
you could definitely do that.
Speaker 2 (01:42:06):
By the way, we were talking about brock Favor, you
would put him on your blue line along with Jackson Leacolm.
Is that what who you said?
Speaker 8 (01:42:13):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:42:13):
I think you should make the Olympic team too. How
about that?
Speaker 2 (01:42:15):
So Connor from SLP text in at the text line
six four, six eighty six about brock Faber called himself
out in the month of October.
Speaker 3 (01:42:23):
Has been on a heater ever since.
Speaker 2 (01:42:25):
Not only has he been playing great, Connor from SLP
says next captain material, I don't think there's any right, Yeah,
how good has he been?
Speaker 15 (01:42:33):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (01:42:34):
And here's the thing about brock Favor. You know I
covered him in his three years at the university. He
is not afraid to say, guess what, I played bad tonight,
you know, And I'm gonna get better, and I'm gonna
get better.
Speaker 3 (01:42:50):
And he wasn't good in October, but he's been fantastic since.
Speaker 13 (01:42:54):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:42:54):
Well, I mean he wasn't bad. He wasn't brock Favor
in October. No, but he wasn't.
Speaker 4 (01:43:00):
But he that's what he you know, that's him.
Speaker 2 (01:43:03):
He's been great ever since.
Speaker 4 (01:43:04):
It's been great.
Speaker 2 (01:43:05):
And so the Blue Line as it's currently constructed, you
got Spurgeon and you got brodein.
Speaker 3 (01:43:10):
You guys, I'm worried which part are you worried about?
Speaker 2 (01:43:13):
Depth wise? I am to be, you know, I am.
Speaker 8 (01:43:19):
You know.
Speaker 4 (01:43:19):
I wish I'd like to see them fortify that a
little bit. Get a veteran in, you know, just just
to you know, cover your tracks.
Speaker 2 (01:43:29):
The question you're going to have is about the durability
of your blue line, right, especially when you're talking about
exactly and that's that's going to be the million dollar
question because when they're out there, they are difference makers.
They don't stick out like a Coroka Presoft or a
Matt Bowley up front, but that's.
Speaker 4 (01:43:47):
How important they are.
Speaker 3 (01:43:48):
Ye, they're not supposed to say defensively.
Speaker 2 (01:43:50):
Now, early in the year they had them broken up
and they were paired with the young guys. But since
they got back to their regular pairings and putting them
with Faber and Middleton rather than Boom and You're a check,
it feels like those guys have gotten back to their roots.
Speaker 4 (01:44:03):
Of Yeah, I like you, I'd like them. You know,
you bring up Middleton, I'd like them to see it,
bring it, have him. Bring in a guy like Middleton,
just another guy there.
Speaker 2 (01:44:13):
You know, bigger.
Speaker 3 (01:44:15):
Bagosian doesn't do that for you. I am he's not flashy,
but I like Bagosian.
Speaker 2 (01:44:24):
I know I'm tepid.
Speaker 4 (01:44:26):
I'm tepid, you know ages getting up there.
Speaker 2 (01:44:28):
Yeah, he's not going to play in your top four
and he's going to play a limited minutes. He's gonna
kill penalties and he can be, you know, kind of
a physical presence.
Speaker 4 (01:44:36):
Listen, right now, I'm not ripping any I'm not ripping anybody,
but but I'm tepid. Okay, Okay, that's you know, I'd
still like to add another guy, just to have another guy,
just to have another guy that would that would really
make me feel comfortable with that decour I do.
Speaker 2 (01:44:53):
Have to you know, we've gone two and a half
hours almost and we really haven't talked about the state
of your golden gop for a hockey team. They're on
the ice coming up later on tonight at ball Arena,
the US Hockey Hall of Fame game, taking on the
du Pioneers. Obviously, that's gonna be a tough matchup. It's
been a tough start to the season for Bob Mosko's crew.
They're on the UFN campus.
Speaker 3 (01:45:12):
So what's the state of your golden golfer team?
Speaker 4 (01:45:15):
Well, when you lose forty percent of your scoring, the
last four of your four of the top five scores
from last year, who could all be in the lineup?
All five could be in the lineup. Connor Kurth is
in Syracuse the other four are in the National Hockey League.
Speaker 2 (01:45:32):
I believe me.
Speaker 8 (01:45:33):
I get it.
Speaker 2 (01:45:34):
So you have two choices.
Speaker 4 (01:45:38):
You allow the guys that you recruited to come in,
or you go to the transfer portal and you get
some older guys and you bring them in. Bob opted
to bring in the young guys. Five of the twelve
forwards in your lineup are freshmen. They're having a hard
(01:45:59):
time scoring goals as a team. They have thirteen goals
for fourteen against in league play. So are they good players?
One hundred percent they're good players. Javon Moore six four,
two hundred and ten pounds is going to be a
beast and he'll have a long career in the National
(01:46:21):
Hockey League.
Speaker 2 (01:46:22):
For one.
Speaker 4 (01:46:24):
They you have to look at it and see where
this team is in January, in February, February, and see
the growth and understand See these guys don't understand it
how we got to play to win and what it
takes to win.
Speaker 2 (01:46:38):
And so.
Speaker 4 (01:46:39):
They're young in that capacity mentality wise. We'll see how
it is, you know, we'll see how it is. But
they've played better as of late.
Speaker 8 (01:46:50):
Uh, you know.
Speaker 4 (01:46:50):
They they split with Penn State, who quite frankly as
a really good chance of going the Frozen four again.
Speaker 2 (01:46:58):
You know they they do, they're they're a heck of
a hockey team. So good test tonight too. I'm axesouted
to see how they do against du on the neutral
ice out there at Ball Arena.
Speaker 4 (01:47:10):
And you know, so, I I just I caution people
when they say no, they're not very good, well just wait,
let them grow a.
Speaker 2 (01:47:18):
Little bit, so we'll see. Hopefully you're going to listen
to the Wild and Sabers tonight right here on the
flagship for Wild Hockey FM one hundred point three the Fan.
But if you want to catch Wally you can and
that starts around eight o'clock from Ball Arena in Denver, Colorado,
Golden Gopher Hockey on News Talk AM eleven thirty and
FM one o three point five. Yeah, well, you know what,
(01:47:39):
keep doing your thing and you'll you'll be back behind
the mic there on those broadcasts here very soon. And
I know that they're on the road for quite a while.
Is on k Fan tonight too. I believe maybe after
we're done. I mean I think they started eight. We
don't run out on there until seven. They're going to KTLK, Yeah,
AM eleven thirty bad FM one O three point five
(01:48:00):
real quick and closing moments here again for folks that
missed the beginning of the show, you're looking great. I
know that it's been a tough road for the last
couple of months, whatever it's been. Uh where you were
to where you've been, recap again for us, how you're
doing and the fact that you're in the studio here
is is obviously a really good Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:48:19):
You know, obviously I'm not walking on my own, which
is you know, not fun, but I have my little
four wheeler and uh, you know, I just I got
to get stronger. And but you know, the prognosis is great,
you know, going to physical therapy, well really every day
because my family makes me work at home and then
physical therapy at I'm gonna kick everybody out.
Speaker 2 (01:48:41):
Honestly, they've just been they've been great. My family has
been great.
Speaker 4 (01:48:44):
And uh so, you know, we just got to get
stronger and little, you know, a little victories every day.
Speaker 3 (01:48:49):
Are those little grandchildren know, awesome, that's great.
Speaker 4 (01:48:51):
They they're all over yesterday and Grandpa, come on, let's
get up, and I'm like, yeah, we will soon enough.
But good for you, but great to be back and
great to be back in studio Brett Kevin.
Speaker 2 (01:49:01):
Awesome, awesome stuff indeed, Patrick, thank you. I can't wait
to see your smiling face again next week and good
luck to you. Good great again. Great to see your
face here in the studio, Alex, thanks for bringing them in.
Thanks to the entire Mikkeletty clan that span the globe

Speaker 3 (01:49:16):
Related to the Mayisitches.
Speaker 2 (01:49:17):
And thank you to John Mayasich and his family for
coming in here for a wonderful conversation.
Speaker 3 (01:49:23):
Yeah, that was cool. That was awesome stuff. If you
missed it and be sure to podcast it. Patrick, thank you,
travel safe. We'll talk to you next week.
Speaker 2 (01:49:29):
Sounds great. That's Pat mcletty. Thank you to Brett blakemore.
Thanks to everyone for listening. The Measitches again, thanks for
