Speaker 6 (01:46):
Right, I do my youngest.
Speaker 4 (01:48):
You've got a uh a Mike jamboree up you know
Dick Sporting goes up in Ridgdale.
Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yes, of course in the backyard there. So cool.
Speaker 4 (01:57):
We got a big jamboree. They got like four or
five games today. It's awesome. They're playing Taskar right now.
Speaker 2 (02:02):
So Mike's how old is that?
Speaker 6 (02:05):
He is?
Speaker 4 (02:05):
Seven?
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Seven years old? Unbelievable and so yeah, yeah, it's a
lot of fun.
Speaker 4 (02:10):
It's twins, right, Uh, he's the younger one, the older
one there twins, the older two. They're eleven. Yeah, but
this is this is our youngest right now.
Speaker 2 (02:19):
It's that I'm watching unbelievable. Well, why don't we get
to congratulations on your induction into the Hall of Fame.
That what an honor? How do you feel about that?
I mean, it's just incredible.
Speaker 4 (02:32):
Yeah, thank you, It's it's it's great. I think the
coolest part about it right now is it just kind
of gives you a chance, which you never do. I
guess at least I never did. Kind of you never
think of that career and think about everything, right, So
it's I mean, it's great. It's gonna be a fun week.
It's it's a great honor. You get to join against
(02:55):
some people that that I grew up idolizing and watching
and some guys I played with. So it's a great honor.
Speaker 3 (03:03):
Zach Parizi and three or four other people are going
in to the US Hockey Hall of Fame. The induction
ceremony coming up Wednesday night at River Center. Tickets available
at US Hockey Hall of Fame dot com. Limited tickets
are available. The event includes reception and dinner. You can
go at Zach Parize, Scott Gomez, Joe Pavelski, Tara Mouzie,
and Bruce Bennett all get inducted into the US Hockey
(03:25):
Hall of Fame Class of twenty twenty five.
Speaker 2 (03:28):
Have you been up to Evelyth Have you had a
chance to check it out?
Speaker 3 (03:31):
Yourself and your world travels over the years of Zach,
I went a long time ago.
Speaker 4 (03:37):
Gosh, I think even when I was in grade school,
we were went up there on a field trip up
like that direction and we stopped there. But it's been
a long time that I since I've been there.
Speaker 2 (03:47):
He Zach, you know, one of these days. I know
your time is limited today and we appreciate you coming on,
but I want got to get you in studio for
an hour because I got a zillion questions. I want
to talk about your father and you know what he
meant to the game and the North Stars and growing
up as a kid and stuff. But I know JP
is uh, you know, looking down and very proud of
(04:10):
you today.
Speaker 6 (04:11):
Yeah, thank you.
Speaker 4 (04:13):
It's I had a great role model growing up. Yeah,
and just he taught me a lot about the game,
He taught me a lot about life, and so he was.
He was a great guy. I loved hearing stories about him.
And the way he impacted different people's lives and so
we were lucky.
Speaker 2 (04:31):
Yeah, I tell you, I think I've told you this
story before shortly, but you know, he had such an
impact on my life. You know, he used to hire
me for a shooting school and when I was in
college at the U, and then obviously had him for
a coach for a while, and it just, uh, you know,
it just you know, what what a what a great
(04:52):
man he was, and you know, just uh, he impacted
a lot of people. You know that you know you've mentioned.
Speaker 4 (04:59):
Yeah, thank you, And actually Darby Henderson gave me one
of those a couple of years ago, gave me one
of his shooting school hats. I don't know how Garby
still had this thing, but I do have somebody apparel
that he has left over from the from the shooting school.
Speaker 2 (05:13):
What did it mean to you?
Speaker 3 (05:14):
I mean, I think there was a lot that went
into the decision to come back and play in Minnesota
in twenty twelve and how it worked out.
Speaker 2 (05:20):
And obviously you set.
Speaker 3 (05:22):
The record book on fire as far as franchise records
and goals and assists and power play goals and game
with all that good stuff. But What did it mean
to come back to Minnesota and have the opportunity to
play in front of your family, including the late JP Perezy.
Speaker 4 (05:37):
It was it was awesome, really, it was, you know.
I mean they made their way out to New Jersey
every once in a while, they watched all the games
on TV. But I think just for them to be
able to come watch them live and just to be
able at the end spend a little extra time that,
you know, not being here. I mean, you never know
(05:57):
how it's going to work out, but just the way
it did to be a round, you know, closer to.
Speaker 6 (06:02):
The end, it was, it was great.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Now you you went to you know this, I have
a bone to pick with you. You went to North Dakota.
And that's fine and and everything. But but that's all right,
we'll let that go. And you know, it was at
a time when I was long gone. But but but
but when you were going through the recruiting process and
obviously you were one of the you know, highly recruited
guys in all of North America, how much did you
(06:29):
feel pressure to go to North Dakota. How much pressure
was there to maybe go to Minnesota or how did
that all work out?
Speaker 4 (06:37):
Honestly, I don't think there was any pressure to go anywhere.
I mean, the difference is I didn't grow up here
dreaming or watching college hockey. To be honest, I never
grew up a golfer guy, never grew up a golfer fan,
And no disrespect, I just didn't. We were right going
to North Star games, not Gofer games, right right. My
(06:59):
thing was always I want to go to the NHL.
Speaker 6 (07:01):
That was it, and.
Speaker 4 (07:04):
For me, I felt that at the time the best
pass would be to go to North Dakota and it
worked out great.
Speaker 6 (07:10):
I loved every minute.
Speaker 2 (07:11):
Yeah I would, I would, I would think so, yeah, it.
Speaker 4 (07:14):
Would have it would have been It would have been
great going to the U as well. But it's just
that's the path that we chose to take. And then
it was awesome.
Speaker 3 (07:22):
Zach had an opportunity have an awesome conversation last week
about this time with the great John Mayasi. He was
in studio and the top two scores and the history
of Golden Gopher hockey.
Speaker 2 (07:32):
We're in one booth and it was awesome, and I
asked him this question. I'm gonna ask you the same thing.
Speaker 3 (07:37):
Because I know you're proud of your time at North Dakota.
I know you're happy with a lot of the things
you did in the National Hockey League, but wearing that
USA sweater, wearing the red, white and blue. We got
the World Juniors coming up here at the end of
the month, you participated in that. The Olympics coming up
here in just a matter of a few months. Over
there in Milan, you participated in that as well. What
did it mean to you to wear the red, white
and blue.
Speaker 4 (07:58):
It was incredible. I was lucky enough to do it,
uh with with with with some good teams too. I
mean we were we won the under eight teams, the
first US team to do that. We won World Juniors,
first US team to do that. So I got to
play in two Olympics, and I mean, it's so awesome
to be able to do that on a on a
(08:19):
world stage and play against the best, and just to
be a part of the you know, the best, the
US team. I mean, it was it was incredible. And
to play in those those world events, there's really it's
it's tough to put it in the words because it's
just it's such a good experience.
Speaker 3 (08:37):
I don't think we need to do any more PSAs
for the World Juniors. But just from your vantage point,
I know it's been a few years, twenty one years
since you participated in the World Juniors.
Speaker 2 (08:47):
That's really.
Speaker 3 (08:51):
What I know is that gonna want to come on
person in your country on a world stage is one thing.
But at that age in two thousand and four, to
be able to do But what was the World Juniors like.
Speaker 2 (09:02):
For you, uh, two decades ago, Zach?
Speaker 6 (09:06):
You know what it was?
Speaker 4 (09:07):
It was awesome and it was so different because you know,
there was no I mean not a lot of you know, video,
so all you did was hear about these other guys.
You hear about them, and you hear about you know,
your dev and all these great players from Canada, and
but you don't see them. You never see them until
you this is your first chance. You're playing head had
(09:27):
to head against them, and honestly, you see where you
line up. You're like, hey, well I think I'm a
pretty good player, but now you're going to play against.
Speaker 2 (09:35):
The best in the world.
Speaker 4 (09:36):
See where you stack up. So it's a good, uh,
a little bit of reality check and it's a good
measuring stick for for an eighteen year old.
Speaker 3 (09:44):
I get two more quick ones for you. Uh, the
first and foremost, You're busy. You're a hockey dad. I'm
a hockey dad. I know what it's like to have
kids at the rink every single night. How close are
you paying attention to the National Hockey League and even
one of your former teams in the Minnesota Wild.
Speaker 4 (10:00):
Honestly, I don't really pay attention at all. I know
it sounds crazy. I just you just get so consumed.
My kids watch it, we'll flip it on at home.
But as far as paying attention, I don't. I don't
really pay attention ATPUS more of a burnt burnt out thing.
But I just pay a lot more attention to peewee
hockey and Mike Hockey right now.
Speaker 2 (10:20):
Yeah, I know that.
Speaker 3 (10:22):
I In fact, uh, Saint Louis Park took Annie Diana
the other night. I got to see Josh Harding banging
around the rec center. So good to see his face.
The little Spurgeon kid I think was and he's not little.
I say little, but just because I think of him
as a young kid. But he was on their JV
team contributing there as well. The other thing I wanted
to ask you about. In about an hour, we're going
to be joined by another guy that's going into the
(10:43):
US Hockey Hall of Fame, and that's Scott Gomez.
Speaker 2 (10:46):
I'm gonna ask him about you. I'll turn the tables.
Speaker 3 (10:48):
Tell me about Scott Gomez and what you remember him
about him as a teammate and as a as a competitor.
Speaker 4 (10:55):
Well for as a player, I mean, Scott was He
was my center for a couple of years and one
of the one of the few guys that could literally
just break break the neutral zone trap like he would
wind up grab the puck behind her net and just
be able to just weave right through the neutral zone
and kick it out. I mean, he was such a
(11:16):
good passer, such a good playmaker that I mean, he
was an awesome line mate for me. And then as
a teammate, I mean my first and second year is
when I played with him, and I was one of
the I was always one of the younger guys on
the team. Is the league was a lot older back then,
but Scott always made sure that I was included in
(11:39):
everything off the ice. You know, guys were going places
out for dinner, on the road, doing things at home.
He'd always make sure I was included, and the young
guys were included. So for me, those are things that
you really really remember from a guy like him. And
he was just an awesome teammate and that's so.
Speaker 2 (11:56):
Important for a young kid coming in breaking into the
National Hockey League too. Just feeling good right and feeling
comfortable about yourself and you know, so you get your
game going then no doubt.
Speaker 4 (12:09):
I always said to him, like, your teammates are making
you feel good, You're you're feeling it's just you play
better if you're more comfortable with the team and off
the ice, you just play better on the ice. So again,
Scott always made sure that that I was included and everything.
And the one thing about Scott too is if it
everyone knows how how defensive we like to play in
(12:31):
New Jersey. And but it was contradictory Becausecott always told me,
if you dumped the pucket, you're the one going to
get it, Like I'm not going to get that thing.
So it was, uh, that's just how he wanted to
play the game. Is just puck possession.
Speaker 2 (12:43):
Awesome stuff.
Speaker 3 (12:44):
Zach and enjoy the night on Wednesday at River Center,
good luck with the old hockey dad stuff and let's do.
Speaker 2 (12:51):
This again for an hour or something. It'd be great.
I know it's tough, but yeah, it'd be great, be great, awesome,
Good luck, exactly, exactly, good guys. All right, there goes well.
Former wildfoe almost called him wild forward.
Speaker 3 (13:02):
Well, former Wild forward Zach Parizi over twelve hundred games
in the National Hockey League over nineteen years, eight hundred
and eighty nine points with of course, the Wild, Devils, Islanders,
and Avalanche, and I went and looked it up. In
the five hundred and fifty eight games he played with Minnesota,
he had one hundred and ninety nine goals, four hundred points,
sixty nine power play goals, and thirty nine game winners.
Speaker 2 (13:23):
Ninth in game.
Speaker 3 (13:23):
Played in Wild history, fourth and goals eleventh and assists,
fifth in points, and now tied with Capriso for first
in power play goals, second in game winners.
Speaker 2 (13:33):
So I don't care to say he's had. He had
a pretty good run without a doubt, you know.
Speaker 3 (13:38):
And I don't know what people think about the move
back in twenty twelve, but I would do that again
in a second.
Speaker 2 (13:44):
I don't know if this franchise without signing those guys
that day. Yep, I don't know where if the franchise
is here, I don't know. Made him relevant again?
Speaker 6 (13:52):
It was, it was, it was.
Speaker 2 (13:54):
It gave some energy to this, to the fan base
and everybody and really to go. And I mean when
you think about it, you know you looked at the
contracts and you know they had to get done. Yeah,
and it boosted the organization and here we are today.
I don't know that I've talked to him since he left.
(14:15):
It's been that long. So it was good to hear
his voice, really good. And if you want to see
him in person, you can. How about well you could
go to Dick's I guess in Ridgdale and watch his.
Speaker 3 (14:22):
Kids on the ice, But you can also go to
the US Hockey Hall of Fame induction ceremony that's coming
up on Wednesday night at River Center. Tickets are available
at US Hockey Hall of Fame dot com. Limited tickets available.
Event includes a reception and dinner. I told you about
the cast of thousands. We're gonna have another one of
those guys that are being inducted here in the class
of twenty twenty five, in Scott Gomez. At the top
(14:44):
of next hour, so I very much look forward to
that conversation giving away Wild tickets today, get those talkbacks
in text US six four six eighty six.
Speaker 2 (14:51):
Whatever's on your mind.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
We can throw it right in front of Pat mcalletty
and talk about anything in the world of hockey. It
doesn't have to be Wild, doesn't have to be NHL,
certainly in college hockey, youth hockey. Whatever's on your mind,
and a great cast of the guests coming up throughout
the course of this two hour extravaganza hight to be
a blast.
Speaker 2 (15:08):
Patrick, I'm looking forward to it.
Speaker 3 (15:09):
Why don't we get that first break out of the
way we had to get as Zach go off the
air because he's got to go coach those kids. But
when we continue, we're going to continue to cultivate our
own kid, Brett Blake Boys Breakaways.
Speaker 2 (15:20):
Next on the fan, Hey, this.
Speaker 7 (15:24):
Is Troy from Farman's Some great show. As always, they
got a quick question for Pats and since he used
to play in the NHL. In November, of course, we
all know that the Wild went on that incredible tear
to basically nagate their slow start in October. But yet
you look at the Central Vision standings and the Wild
gain a point on either Colorado or Dallas.
Speaker 6 (15:44):
As a player, how tough is it?
Speaker 7 (15:46):
And do you watch the standings on a day to
day basis when you're playing and it's November December.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
Thanks for the talk back, Troy. Keep them coming.
Speaker 3 (15:55):
We'll give away a pair of random tickets to the
Wild and Stars coming up Thursday at Grand because you
know Arena get your own tickets at wild dot com
slash tickets. How about you, Patrick, as a player, would
you watch the standings in a day, day in, day
out basis, even at the beginning of the season.
Speaker 2 (16:10):
Well, you know, I I for for some people, I
think you always take a look at them, right, But
you know, the the talk is get your game, go
and worry about you know, just winning you because you
you just have to.
Speaker 3 (16:25):
You have to.
Speaker 2 (16:26):
You know, it's it's it's so long that you can't
be you know, consuming yourself looking at that thing every day.
You just got to keep on playing and and uh
and try to keep winning and and forget about what
happened in October and you get to November and have
that November month and then you start a new month.
So I think a lot of teams look at it
(16:46):
from a ten game. You know, you look at it
every ten games. You want to be above five hundred
every time. So if you're taking care of yourself in
that ten game stretch, then you're then you should be
in pretty good shape.
Speaker 3 (16:57):
Keep those talk backs coming, keep those texts coming, six four,
six eighty six, and keep coming at you with Brett
Blakemore's breakaways.
Speaker 8 (17:05):
It's time for Brett Blakemore breakaway, freak Caprice and now
bore break away.
Speaker 3 (17:23):
All I've been able to think about all week is
what's Brett Blakemore gonna throw at us this week?
Speaker 2 (17:27):
And here the time has finally arrived. I didn't sleep
last night. Oh that's.
Speaker 9 (17:34):
Uh.
Speaker 10 (17:34):
I actually wasn't coming out of the game. Wasn't too
negative to the wild game against the Flames. Yeah, they
had a lot of shots in the first they just
couldn't break through and then it kind of fell through
some weird turnovers. But Hines, I read the the Gamer
from your favorite blogger, Yeah, or maybe Joe Smith. Here's
words that John Hines using postgame outplayed out, competed, outskated
(17:58):
out executed. Is he being too negative on a team
that just had a historic November or is the hate
from the coach justified.
Speaker 2 (18:08):
I think he hit it between the eyes. Patrick.
Speaker 3 (18:09):
I watched that game and it was worse than a
game against Buffalo. Not all are going to be picasas
I get that, But it wasn't a good game.
Speaker 2 (18:15):
Well, no, it wasn't. And you know in an eighty
two game season eighty four, next season, that happens, you know,
and they've been on a heater, and yeah, it happens,
and you know that's it's the only way to explain it.
Guess what, They're gonna have a few more of them too.
Yep so, and but the sky's not falling because of
(18:37):
one game.
Speaker 3 (18:37):
Totally agree, But I don't have a problem with the
coach calling out of a couple. I think Trainion said
the same thing.
Speaker 2 (18:43):
Jim says, it was one of those games we're gonna have.
That's not what the coach is supposed to say. He's
got to keep them on their toes and say, yeah,
we didn't do this, this and this, and we lost.
Speaker 6 (18:51):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (18:52):
Period.
Speaker 6 (18:52):
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (18:54):
The problem is it's happened twice in the last four games,
so that's kind of twice in the last three games.
Speaker 2 (18:58):
Really, the Buffalo game wasn't great, and then they got
a point out of it, and they did and guess what,
and we tend to forget that. See what once once
Minnesota gets on a heater like they have been, well
they're not supposed to lose again, you know, and they're
the greatest team.
Speaker 3 (19:12):
Well they have flaws. I hate to tell you, the
Minnesota Wild have flaws. And this is not a team
built today. This lineup will not win you the Stanley Cup.
I guarantee it. I guarantee it. They should be killing,
they should be buffalo yea a a in the normal
sense of the word, of course, but not every not
(19:34):
eve Hey, it's the National Hockey League.
Speaker 2 (19:38):
It's the best league in the world. So that's where
I'm at. Jeez.
Speaker 10 (19:42):
And they think I'm negative guarantee no Stanley Cup to Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (19:46):
No no, no, no, no, no, no. Yes. I know.
Speaker 10 (19:50):
If they make trades, then we'll talk, thank you. But
that's not a good bit, all right. I've had this
feeling build up over the course of the season, and
he's not like this isn't a guy that's on my
fecal roster that's gonna now.
Speaker 2 (20:06):
I don't like him, and I'm gonna rip him.
Speaker 10 (20:08):
But I've liked him historically, but I think this season
he's just kind of been a little off. And he
had a weird play in Calgary where he turned the
puck over which ended up.
Speaker 2 (20:17):
Going the other way for a goal.
Speaker 10 (20:20):
Middle I think Jake Middleton is what's going on there.
I felt like he's had a few weird turnovers that
lead to goals. I can think of one early on
where it like handcuffed them and it went the other
way for a breakaway goal. I just I feel like,
and I's had injuries too, what's going on with Jake middle.
Speaker 3 (20:37):
In my opinion, Jake Middleton's good far outwayh is bad.
I know the gap that you're talking about. I remember
it was the Zeri goal, I do believe, where it
ended up being almost a three on one and they
converted it. It was about three minutes after they had
taken the two one advantage. That said the good far
out weighs the bad with Jake Middleton. In my mind,
(20:58):
I agree, And you know, every player goes through a patch,
and this may be his patch. I'll leave it there
because night in and night out, he's he's you know,
he's pretty he's pretty.
Speaker 2 (21:09):
Solid back there.
Speaker 3 (21:10):
Yeah, and paired up with Jared Spurgeon for the most part,
and that leaves brodein with brock Faber.
Speaker 2 (21:16):
I think that's a pretty solid top four if you
ask me. Yeah, for sure, I'm not saying like all
he's done, it's over. I'm not saying and he is
curious as to why I And that's fair. I've noticed
that it hasn't been as good as it usually is,
and it's fair and I think, you know, it's a patch,
you know, And and he'll snap out of it and
then he'll start playing well, you know. I actually like
(21:36):
when he gets involved in the offense, maybe because he
has the ability to get the puck in the zone
and and jump up and and when he when he
is doing that, I think he's really dialed in. And
I mean that goes away from what you're saying about
his defensive but everything combined then just kind of fits.
Speaker 10 (21:57):
Then we've got time for one more. Sure, I'm trying
to figure out I want to get an Olympics talker.
And because the new news coming out of Italy is
that there's going to be a smaller ice service. Usually
you go to the Olympics. It's the Olympics size sheet.
It's bigger. How are we going to play with all
that space? Now it's smaller I think because they use
the metric system instead of just doing feet, So now
(22:18):
it's like three feet smaller than an NHL rink. And
the league said total non factor. We don't care about it.
The players, I'm not. I think this is a talker.
Speaker 6 (22:28):
Well, I.
Speaker 2 (22:31):
It's not done either. Will it be a major I
think they'll condense the neutral zone foot and a half
each way? Either. Guys are bigger, you know, does that
change the dynamic of the who's selected?
Speaker 3 (22:49):
Might regardless. Shame on the Olympic committee for allowing this
to have December and it's not done yet. I mean
we're talking about games coming.
Speaker 2 (22:59):
Up in Suary.
Speaker 3 (23:00):
Done this summer for sure, so they could at least
be out there and playing on it and have eyeballs
on it and and give them kudos for what a
great job they're doing. It ain't that at this point,
And I know I'd be nervous as heck about it.
You know the other thing I was thinking about, they
probably can't do this. I was I was spitballing on
Olympic gears, Why not play ten fewer games in the
(23:21):
regular season, because.
Speaker 2 (23:23):
The way they're cramming games in here, and that's what
it's going to be.
Speaker 3 (23:26):
But if you played five less at home, five less
on the road, and then played a more like a
regular quote unquote schedule.
Speaker 2 (23:32):
Man, the way they're cramming games and the Serb a
talker in Janus February March, when we're talking who's going
to make the playoffs? Yeah, who's over tired? They're going
to be how many guys are hurt?
Speaker 5 (23:44):
You know?
Speaker 2 (23:45):
And not even to talk about the guys that you're
best of the best are going to Milan and some
of them going and this is crazy. Are they going
to have to change your worlds? What if a team
just gets decimated by injuries, right and and you're in
on the cap and involved, it's gonna be It's gonna
be something to keep an eye on in March, no doubt.
(24:07):
A great job as always, Brett.
Speaker 3 (24:08):
Maybe we can get back to it later in the show,
although we are pretty jam packed, including the next half hour,
We're gonna turn our attention to the college ranks. We've
got both Bruce Sisky, the play by play voice of
the UMD Bulldogs and Brett Larson, the head coach at
Saint Cloud State, both coming up in the next thirty minutes.
Speaker 2 (24:24):
Right here and Beyond the Pond.
Speaker 3 (24:30):
Man Beyond the Pond continues Kevin following us along with
Pat mcletty, an opportunity to talk to you about anything
and everything in the world of hockey, including on the
college scene, where our good buddy Bruce Sisky, of course,
(24:51):
is a resident expert.
Speaker 6 (24:53):
There.
Speaker 3 (24:53):
The play by play voice for the UMD Bulldogs coming
at us live from Kalamazoo, Michigan.
Speaker 2 (24:59):
How are we doing there, Bruce.
Speaker 6 (25:01):
Boys, It's great to be back with you. How you doing.
Speaker 2 (25:04):
I told you, Bruce, I told you you were going
to win.
Speaker 6 (25:08):
I have to go back and check the podcast.
Speaker 2 (25:11):
Well, I told you not maybe a month ago or
two months ago. Let's start to stage here.
Speaker 3 (25:17):
First of all, the Bulldogs come away with a four
to one win last night over Western Michigan. That's topic
A topic B that I think Patrick is alluding to
is the fact that the Bulldogs came into three am
Arena at Mariucci and swept the Golden Golphers at the
end of October.
Speaker 2 (25:33):
Is that what we're alluding to. No, we're alluding to
what the.
Speaker 3 (25:38):
First the Western Michigan game. Okay, all right, well both
are factual. So let's start with last night. What happened
last night against the WMU.
Speaker 4 (25:48):
So I thought.
Speaker 9 (25:49):
I came away from the rink and I sent a
snapchat to my kid back home and I said, I
think that's the best game they've played this year. You
know Western Michigan pat as, you know, they they make
a living and transition.
Speaker 6 (26:02):
They go north real quick.
Speaker 9 (26:03):
They got a two on one about a minute and
a half into the game. William Whitelaw came down the
left wing side after blocking a shot at the point
and got behind the d and and Joey Pierce played
it perfectly, took the pass away and Adam guy On
stopped Whitelaw. I'd have to go back and watch the
whole game. I am pretty confident that was the only
odd band rushed Western Michigan had all night. And that's
(26:25):
that is not easy to do against this team.
Speaker 2 (26:28):
It's a tough building to play in.
Speaker 9 (26:29):
Also, yep, it is, and and they handled that well.
I thought the building was kind of I've there's been
a more energy in that building before than ther was
last night. But I think UMD had something to do
with it, because outside of that quick opportunity in the
opening couple of minutes, Western had nothing.
Speaker 5 (26:48):
Uh.
Speaker 9 (26:48):
They they pushed a couple of times, they had some
offensive zone, sustained offensive zone time. They they they took
advantage of an icing after a long shift and got
their only goal in the second period. But you know,
for a team that makes their living getting the pucked
north and getting bodies north and swarming you in the
offensive zone, the Bulldos gave them nothing. They managed the
(27:09):
puck tremendously and is it a little boring sometimes, yeah,
but it's very effective when you can play that way,
and they did last night, and it was a very
good sign at the multiple lines contributing. Scout truman Is
on the second line had a couple of power play goals.
The second power play unit got reconfigured during the bye
week and had a great night last night. And Adam
guy On once again makes the saves he has to make,
(27:33):
and it's just it's been uncanny this year. It's so
the opposite of what we saw for him last year
and a lot more in line with the expectations I
think a lot of people had when he got to
um D.
Speaker 5 (27:44):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
I mean, if you're going to beat um D, you
are going to You're not going to get Scott Sandlin's
not going to get out coached. And you know he's
such a as you know, Bruce, a stickler to detail,
and it just you know, you alluded to it. The
biggest difference from last year to this year obviously a
(28:07):
little bit more maturity they have, but the goaltending. The
goaltending is makes a major major difference in whether you
win or lose games.
Speaker 9 (28:18):
We knew very early on last year that the plants
Jason Shagay up front, Adam Cleaver and Ty Hands in
the back end. We knew those guys were ballplayers, that
they can make a lot of special things happen to
be blunt. They could not outscore some of the mistakes
they were making in the back end last year. They're
not making those mistakes maturity and therefore they don't have
(28:42):
to outscore those mistakes and it's allowed them to get
to their game a lot more easily, and it's made
a big difference. And I thought the top line is
they've been dynamics of the country is so talented. But
they played I thought, really well below the face off
dots last night in both zones, and that allowed them
(29:02):
to get.
Speaker 6 (29:03):
You know, up the ice and play offensive.
Speaker 9 (29:05):
But the other thing you did was it kept Western
Michigan from getting anything going in transition.
Speaker 2 (29:09):
Is this the last year in that building? Bruce, No,
it is.
Speaker 9 (29:14):
It's I believe it's our last scheduled visit here the
new buildings under construction. It's supposed to open fall twenty
twenty seven, is what we're told. So are you going
to miss it one more year in the old building?
Speaker 2 (29:26):
Are you going to miss that press box?
Speaker 6 (29:29):
It's tight.
Speaker 9 (29:30):
You've been there, you know it's tight. But I'll be honest,
I am going to miss it because I sent it
on on my Instagram last night.
Speaker 6 (29:40):
You are literally right on top of.
Speaker 4 (29:42):
The ice yea.
Speaker 6 (29:42):
And they don't build press boxes like that anymore, do that.
Speaker 2 (29:45):
It's only like ten feet wide and you got to
say fifty.
Speaker 6 (29:49):
People that's it. Yes, that is an issue. I will
give you that.
Speaker 9 (29:53):
I've got to try to carve out a spot because
they put the visiting radio guy on the opposite side
of the home ring, which is fine. You don't want
to yell over each other the whole game. But the
problem is that the side that I'm on at the
side of the PA guys on So I tried, I
try to carve out my space as far away from
the PA guys I can get. And yeah, it's it's
a tight press box, there's no doubt about that. But
(30:15):
it's it's unlike any other that we go to now
because the vantage point is so cool at the pace
of the game from where you sit in that press
box is just ridiculous.
Speaker 2 (30:25):
I'll tell you, once those go away, they're not coming back.
So enjoy it.
Speaker 3 (30:29):
I know it sucks that you're you're smashed in there,
but there's been some great spots around the National Hockey League.
Speaker 2 (30:34):
We've talked about all the town and Joe as well,
that they were right over the ice and then then
when they build new you're going further back and you're
in the clouds. And so once they're gone, they're not
coming back. So that enjoyed it while you got it.
So Bruce, you know, it's very, very difficult to sweep
in college hockey. The Bulldogs have a chance to do
that tonight. Thoughts going into tonight's game.
Speaker 6 (30:58):
So it's funny.
Speaker 9 (30:59):
Matt Well into the News Tribune brought it up with
Scott Sandel at the media conference on Wednesday, and I
think Scott's just started of talking about it, and I
get it. But the reality is that they're nine and
zero on Friday and four and four on Saturday. And
so I went and dug into some of the numbers.
Speaker 6 (31:14):
And expected goals at the college level.
Speaker 9 (31:17):
It's a flawed stat because there's a human being some
more involved in the process instead of the quality of
an opportunity. Right, But they're expected goals on Friday. Expected
goals against are roughly nineteen through nine games in eight
Saturday games or over twenty. That tells you that they
(31:38):
are giving up better opportunities on Saturdays. They give up
on Fridays because the same people that chart them on
Fridays they are charting them on Saturdays. In these buildings.
It's not like it's a whole different crew walking into
the second game of a series.
Speaker 2 (31:50):
All analytic this one for you. When you lose out
Friday night, you're going into Saturday night. There's a little
bit more in your game from the from the opposing team.
And so absolutely we'll just leave that one right there. Hey,
do you want to take this out there?
Speaker 3 (32:07):
Do you want to take this opportunity to gloat about
the Bulldogs coming to the U of M campus and
getting a sweep in October?
Speaker 2 (32:14):
This is your opportunity.
Speaker 9 (32:15):
No, what I What I would like to do, though, Kevin,
besides wish you a happy birthday, is uh would? I
would like to point out that every game the Golphers
win from here on out helps the Bulldogs. So I'm
actually kind of a golfer fan right now.
Speaker 2 (32:28):
You don't even have to worry about that.
Speaker 3 (32:29):
What are you?
Speaker 2 (32:30):
Number one, two, three, four in there?
Speaker 6 (32:33):
What?
Speaker 2 (32:33):
What what do they call it?
Speaker 11 (32:34):
Now? The n p I?
Speaker 6 (32:36):
The n p I.
Speaker 2 (32:36):
Okay, yeah, you're you're gonna have we So umb.
Speaker 6 (32:41):
Was six going into the bye week.
Speaker 9 (32:42):
Last week the Golphers going to Denver and beat the
Pioneers in overtime.
Speaker 6 (32:45):
The Bulldogs go up the fourth.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Yeah, well that's all you do, is I will any game?
What we do is help our little sister friends and
Wow in the Northland careful, I know I shouldn't say that.
You know, I'm kidding, Bruce. Good luck tonight and Calama Zoo.
Speaker 3 (33:02):
Enjoy the ride. Man the Bulldogs are on fire. It's
it's been fun to watch.
Speaker 9 (33:07):
Yeah, thank you much, boys, appreciate it. Happy holiday everybody,
you too.
Speaker 2 (33:09):
Thanks.
Speaker 3 (33:10):
There, he goes Bruce Sisky, the play by play voice
of them, UMD Bulldogs very cocky these days, there, Patrick.
Speaker 2 (33:16):
And rightly so. Yeah, they had a really good team,
Yes they do.
Speaker 3 (33:19):
Let's go on the other side of the state and
check in with the head coach of Saint Cloud State.
It's Brett Larson joining us here on Beyond the Pond.
Speaker 2 (33:26):
Good morning, Brett.
Speaker 12 (33:28):
Hey guys, thanks for having me real quick.
Speaker 3 (33:31):
Before we get into the nuts and bolts, recap what
happened last night. You guys went toe to toe with
North Dakota there in Saint Cloud ended up losing four
to three, but it sounded like it was a heck
of a hockey game.
Speaker 12 (33:41):
Yeah, it was a great hockey game. Actually, it was
everything that you could look at analytalytically. It was an
even game, face off, shots, chances for and against, all
those things. It was one of those games where they
made one more play than us. Yeah, we got to
turn that around tonight.
Speaker 6 (33:55):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (33:55):
I watched the majority of it, bretton But first of all,
it's great to talk to you again. It's been way
too long and that's that's on me. But you know, I,
Barrett Hall, I mean that goal. I turned on Sports
Center this morning and it's a top ten play. But
what a shorthanded goal he had. But to your point,
(34:17):
you guys are just you know, they'd score you tied up,
they'd score you tied up, and like you said, it
was just you know, it was one play that decided
the game.
Speaker 6 (34:27):
It really was.
Speaker 12 (34:28):
And it was, like I said, I as a coach
is tough. You're obviously want to win a big game
against a huge rival, but you look at your team
and you got to find ways to get better tonight.
I thought we played really well last night. I just
thought there were some times where we got to get
better at getting underneath our coverage, getting around the net,
creating second third opportunities. We need to do that to
be able to score a bit more. And you know,
(34:49):
we've kind of proven that we can play with anybody
in the country right now. We've done a pretty good
job of that going into the game or fourteenth in
the NPI, all those things, but now it's time to
prove that we can beat anybody in Country. North Dakota
is a really good team this year. We got to
play with something to prove tonight.
Speaker 2 (35:04):
You know, I know coaches don't look at it. I
look at it, Brett, you know. And you know when
someone asked me, well, what do you think of this team,
I'm like, well, talk to me in January and February,
because that's when you know, if you got your team
dialed in, if they're if they're all on board with
what the coaching staff is saying, and and you're doing
what you want to do. I know, you know that
(35:25):
that's easy to say from my perspective, but from a
coach's perspective, darn it. You know you wanted to get
that win last night.
Speaker 12 (35:34):
Exactly you want you know, we got a good crowd,
the energies in the building. You want to take it
to a rival at Space and it felt like that
type of game, and it was. It was kind of
a slug fest, you know, like each team had some chances,
each team was playing well. It felt like just a
really good hockey game. But there's still you know what,
there's no constellation trophe in a game like that. You
lose it, you don't feel good about yourself. And but
(35:54):
in college hockey usually coming back Saturday night, it's it's
tough to win because I'll tell you what, the Huskies
are going to be hungry. It's just that one percent
it's pushing it over the hump. I think we're gonna
we're going to bring our best tonight.
Speaker 2 (36:08):
Yeah, and Brett, you know, with the with the changes
in college hockey, which you know, I you know, I
mean every year they seem to change, but you know,
this year, with the influx of the Canadian junior players
coming in, the parody in college hockey, it's it's ridiculous.
I mean, if you had ask me, you know, the
(36:28):
of the twenty five thirty teams that I think that
potentially could win it. I mean, it's just crazy how
difficult it is to win night in and night out
in college hockey.
Speaker 12 (36:40):
I've never seen it this tough.
Speaker 6 (36:41):
Pat, I totally agree with you.
Speaker 12 (36:42):
And there are no upsets anymore, just aren't. Like you know,
the fans will both think it's an upset at times,
but the coaches in college hockey, no, right now there
is more parody than ever. Obviously with the expanded player
pool and the ability to bring in more players to
improve your team. There's not a bad team in college
hockey right now. Anybody can beat anybody. If you don't
show up ready to play, you're gonna get beat.
Speaker 3 (37:03):
Well, I have a feeling you're going to have a
player lid under those guys for the rematch tonight, coming
up at six o'clock in St.
Speaker 2 (37:10):
Cloud. What are you expecting in game two of two.
Speaker 12 (37:13):
I want us to get to their net, I do.
We got to get in front of their goalie.
Speaker 2 (37:16):
We got to make it uncomfortable for him.
Speaker 12 (37:18):
I thought we were a little bit perimeter offensively last night.
We need to be a little bit harder and get
to the dirty areas and get rewarded for it. And
we need to take a step as a team. Like
I said, we've been right in there.
Speaker 2 (37:28):
Yeah, we've got a lot of.
Speaker 6 (37:29):
Really good games.
Speaker 12 (37:31):
But this, as you said, Pat, like I want to
see us take a step. I want to see us
bring our a game tonight and beat a big rivalry,
arrival at home in a big game, and just get
that little bit of swagger that you need to prove
that you can beat the big boys. So, like I said,
we've been proven we can hang with him now it's
time to prove we can beat one of the top teams.
Speaker 2 (37:49):
Go get them tonight, Brett, thanks for doing this.
Speaker 6 (37:52):
Thanks guys.
Speaker 2 (37:53):
Thanks Brett.
Speaker 3 (37:53):
There he goes Brett Larson, the head coach of the
Saint Cloud State Huskies. They got North Dakota tonight, six
o'clock Saint Cloud.
Speaker 2 (38:01):
You can catch that game on Channel twenty three. Channel
twenty three. Yeah, that's their new home this year. So awesome.
We'll be looking for that. I actually tried to pick
it up last night.
Speaker 3 (38:10):
I must have tuned in late and they were doing
some kind of a magic show on there.
Speaker 2 (38:14):
So make sure they're on timing, I guess, and I
were flipping back between that game and Michigan and Michigan stuff.
Oh my lord, Yeah, Michigan and Michigan State. Yeah, good
stuff for sure, space you want to there were twenty
twenty I think NHL draft picks on that on the
ice last night.
Speaker 6 (38:33):
Wow.
Speaker 2 (38:33):
I don't know how many first rounders. It was crazy good.
Speaker 3 (38:37):
Saw a little bit of that, saw a little bit
of the series with the Gophers and Ohio State. I
know you were keeping track of that Thursday and Friday
and welcome to the Big Ten. Yeah, the Gophers end
up with a with a split, but that one was crazy.
Speaker 2 (38:49):
I was trying to watch that game on Thursday, well
the wild we're battling with the Calgary Flames.
Speaker 3 (38:54):
Every time I looked up, they looked like a pinball machine.
The score was changing. What did you make of the
two game set against the.
Speaker 2 (39:00):
Well, you know, again, always always hard on the road.
You know, they win, they win Thursday, and you know
last night they they had it, they had it, couldn't
hold on, goes to overtime and lose. They're playing much
much better, you know, and you know, beating Denver, being
(39:21):
Penn State, you know, their record is certainly improved and
they're starting to come together a little bit. There's some
concerning things, no doubt, they're not generating. They don't have
the offense right now that they've had in the past,
so it's different. And but that being said, they're not
generating a lot of shots, a lot of volume, and
(39:43):
they're getting out shot quite a bit. And so you know,
I think when you look in the second half, you
want to see that get a little tighter in terms
of shots four and shots against. But you know what
they're they're younger players are starting to mature, and so
now we're gonna have to wait and see how it
plays out.
Speaker 3 (40:04):
Let me ask you about a couple of those players,
because I think there's probably listeners out there that are
casual goal for fans that aren't involved in it as
much as you are.
Speaker 2 (40:13):
And I think I would classify myself as that.
Speaker 3 (40:15):
I try to watch as much as I can, but
the NHL schedule sometimes gets in the way. But I
keep hearing some of these names that are coming up
throughout the course of the of this short season thus far.
Speaker 2 (40:25):
So let me ask you about a couple of them.
Speaker 3 (40:27):
Javon Moore kid scored the overtime winner against du last
week at Ball Arena in the US Hockey Hall of
Fame game.
Speaker 2 (40:33):
Tell me about Javon Moore and what excites you about him. Well,
he's a freshman, but he's six two hundred or yeah,
six two hundred and fifteen pounds, skate like, skate like
the win. I mean, he made it pass last night
to Brodie Zeemer that was just beautiful, and you know,
you got the game winning goal and ot against Denver again.
You know, he's just learning and as he matured this
(40:57):
first half as much as any what he on that
hockey team, and so he's going to be a stud.
It's going to play in the National Hockey League for
ten years, you know or more. You just got to
give him time. But boys, he really really jumped up lately.
It feels like as the season goes along.
Speaker 3 (41:15):
It's like when we talk about the young guys on
the Wild getting more comfortable as October becomes November, it
becomes December. That's kind of what you're talking about. If
I'm more doubt about it, how about LJ. Mooney Electric?
Speaker 2 (41:27):
Just electric? You know his cousin is is Logan Cooley.
I don't know if he knew that, but you know,
he just he makes place and he set up Brodie
Zemer last night and one of Zeemer's Zeemer's other goals
Zeemer at four on the weekend. By the way, he's
got twelve. Now, yeah, I think he's fourth over all
the country and goals, so you know, he's he's just
(41:49):
when the puck is on a stick, something's going to happen.
And he is a whole buck fifty or buck sixty.
I don't know, you know, I don't know what's what
they put in the you know, in the in the
lineup or you know, on the on the sheet, but
but he's he's fearless and uh, he's just a fun
player to watch.
Speaker 6 (42:08):
Now.
Speaker 3 (42:08):
I don't know what their goaltending situation is, but the
name that I keep seeing come up is that Luca
d Pasco had forty seven saves in the win against
du had thirty two saves on Thursday against the buck guys.
Luca de Pasco, what type of shape is the goaltending situation?
Speaker 2 (42:24):
Well, I think and I'm not speaking for anybody at
the university, and I'm not a coach, and but I
think it's starting to trend towards Depasco. He's been really,
really good. I think last night, now Airy gave up.
You know, two of the goals that he gave up
went off go for guys, and so that's something.
Speaker 3 (42:45):
That first one that's yeah and annoying for a goaltender
to have to deal with that, and there.
Speaker 2 (42:50):
Was another one. So but I think I think if
you were to ask me if they were playing the
national title game, I think the passcal would be the guy.
But well, we'll have to see how that plays out
and how Bob's gonna deal with that come the second half.
Speaker 3 (43:06):
Transferred in from Michigan State, right, Yes, yeah, how's Bob
Moscow holding up? I haven't talked to Bob. We haven't
had him on the area yet. We've only this is
only our second show and we've been jammed. How's he
holding up getting ready for the world.
Speaker 2 (43:17):
I think good. But I haven't seen him enough because
usually I'm in the locker room and with my you
know issue and and uh and stuff. I haven't seen
him a lot. We sat down and talked quite a
bit last week, and but I think he's doing fine. Listen,
He's got a ton on his plate, and you know,
with the World Juniors and putting that roster together and
(43:38):
and now you know, now with the Gophers being done
for the first half, I think things well, I don't
know if they'll settle down, but he can concentrate on that.
And but no, he's uh, you know, he's got a
good attitude. He believes in his team and uh. And
the good thing, you know, he's patient with him too
and understands where they are. So I think overall good.
Speaker 3 (43:57):
Quick look at the college hockey scoreboard already told you
you and d took out Saint Cloud State four to three.
The rematch coming up to six o'clock tonight in Saint Cloud.
U m D took out Western Michigan for to one.
Rematch seven o'clock tonight in Kalamazoo, August Anna beating BAMIDGI
three one. In Sioux Falls. That rematch is six o'clock tonight.
Minnesota State beat Farris State five. One day they're on
(44:19):
a heaters in man Cato and then in Saint Paul
at that brand new arena, Saint Thomas will take on
Lake Superior State. Last night, the Tommy's fell five to
three to the Lakers. That kind of gets you out.
Speaker 2 (44:31):
To me, that's a dishus coming loss for for Saint Thomas.
But there again, that's college hockey for you. You just
you just don't know, you know, you know, you think
have we this is a team that we should beat
and Lake State comes in and beats them. So you
just you just don't know.
Speaker 3 (44:48):
And in this in this college hockey, you know games unbelievably,
one hour is in the books. We still have an
hour to go. Lots to come, including the schloss. We'll
get back to the college hockey conversation in about thirty
thirty five minutes from now. We also are going to
check in with Scott Gomez. He too will be inducted
into the US Hockey Hall of Fame. He joins us next.
(45:10):
I'm be on the pond man all right, waiting on
(45:34):
Scott Gomez should be joined by him here in a
little bit. He's going into the US Hockey Hall of
Fame Class of twenty twenty five on Wednesday at River Center.
When we get him, that'll be a lot of fun.
I'll tell you this much, Pat. I don't know if
you looked over it. Do you see this in the corner?
Speaker 6 (45:49):
I do? What is it?
Speaker 2 (45:51):
It's safe? Not that the thing behind it here? Let
me go grab it. Yeah, what this is?
Speaker 3 (45:58):
You may not have ever seen it in person. You've
heard about it. The wheel of topic. Common leaves this here,
and he doesn't. I guess he forgets about it because
he doesn't need.
Speaker 2 (46:06):
It until the SPU I want to try it out.
Speaker 3 (46:09):
But here's the problem, Like we did this not that
long ago, and I have a feeling that it's probably
still in shambles.
Speaker 2 (46:14):
So let me just see if I can. Let me
get some of the tools out here, right, I didn't
play golf. No, you didn't play golf.
Speaker 11 (46:20):
Did you?
Speaker 2 (46:21):
Hang on a second?
Speaker 3 (46:22):
Here, I got a hammer. I'm gonna work on it here,
because you don't know this. I'm actually very handy, but
I'm impressed. I'm very handy, and the wheel of topic
is awesome. But I don't want to talk golf when
there's snow on the ground, so he doesn't need it
till the spring.
Speaker 2 (46:38):
So a chainsaw, that's that'll be handy. I think that's
a jackhammer.
Speaker 6 (46:42):
Very good.
Speaker 2 (46:44):
All right, I think I'm done the wheel of topic.
Let's let's spend it. Usually it comes up on the
Commons golf? Are you ready bred for wheel of topic?
Let's see if I fixed it. I hope you don't
get serious.
Speaker 10 (46:57):
For the US.
Speaker 2 (46:59):
To gasoline prices, Who.
Speaker 6 (47:08):
The hell was that?
Speaker 3 (47:09):
Gasoline prices? I don't want that, really, that's what we
came up with, you know what I probably here? Let
me let me bang on it a couple more times.
All right, try it again, gasoline prices?
Speaker 2 (47:21):
What the hell was that? One more time?
Speaker 6 (47:23):
On?
Speaker 2 (47:30):
I want to talk about gasoline prices less than Commons
golf game Minnesota wild there, Joe. Yeah, you know, I'm
very handy.
Speaker 3 (47:41):
People don't give me a lot of credit that I
can't do stuff with my hands. Well, I fixed the
wheel of topic.
Speaker 2 (47:45):
You almost screwed it up more. I hope, I hope we.
Speaker 3 (47:48):
Can figure out a way to get it back to
where it needs to be next spring. A lot of
time to worry about that, But since we have an
opportunity to talk to Minnesota Wild Hockey, Well, they just
had their twelve game point street stop pat They lost
for the first time in regulation in just under a month.
Speaker 2 (48:04):
Yeah, and that happens. What a what a start to December,
and you know November is behind us now, and you know,
here we go.
Speaker 3 (48:14):
Right when we last talked about this time last week,
they were coming off that wonderful Black Friday game against
the Colorado Avalanche, and no one could take that was
a heavyweight battle of the Avalanche had a ten game
win streak going into that, the Wild had a six
game win streak. Just an epic battle there within the
Central Division, and unfortunately the Wild followed that up with
(48:35):
two of the next three were clunkers, whether you.
Speaker 2 (48:38):
Want to call it that or not.
Speaker 3 (48:39):
That that's fine and so happier on them than I
am about that, which is shocking. I wouldn't call them clunkers.
I mean they were, yeah, but you're starting to the
Buffalo last place in the Eastern Conference, last place in.
Speaker 2 (48:52):
The last but you're starting to think, hey, they shouldn't
how can they look? They shouldn't lose, they should win
eighty two game.
Speaker 3 (49:00):
They beat Colorado and then they fell short against two
bad teams.
Speaker 2 (49:04):
I mean, you go from highs to lows. It's anyway, Trama,
let me ask you this question. All right, Game seven
Stanley Cup Finals, who's your goaltender? I don't know. I
mean it is so hard to not say yes.
Speaker 3 (49:22):
The numbers he's putting up, Like we had mensa in
last week, we talked a little about Frank Brimstack.
Speaker 2 (49:26):
He's bringing up numbers like Frank Brimsay, Yeah, it's ridiculous.
And how good was he against Edmonton? I mean what
Edmonton for the better half of the second and third period,
you know, played Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (49:39):
I mean, how good has he been period? His numbers
are ridiculous, has not lost in regulation? His numbers are
practically sub zero. A little bit of an exaggeration, but again,
what he did against I don't know if you saw
what Edmonton did starting Brett.
Speaker 2 (49:55):
It's got to be the gray Wall of Saint Paul.
Speaker 3 (49:57):
Yeah, I know, it's it's amazing and the game has
bought into what the yesper Valsetet effect.
Speaker 2 (50:03):
But I don't know, if you.
Speaker 3 (50:03):
Saw what Edmonton did after the wild blank and one zip,
they go and they play Seattle. It just absolutely destroyed
it or something like that. Just a ridiculous beat down him.
McDavid had trig dry title on the board. They got
a lot of their frustration out that brodine Eck and
Valstad put on them.
Speaker 2 (50:21):
Two nights prior. They took it out on the crack
and Thursday night in Edmint. And if you go back
to that Calgary game too, that game is over in
the first period. Had Minnesota scored on a couple, they
had great opportunities in the first period and power plays
right and and and they and they didn't. So okay,
Calgary says, hey, we're in this thing, and and you
(50:45):
kind of you kind of saw on Minnesota drift off
a little bit. And sure they weren't. They they didn't
play their their best game obviously, but but they but
they could have put the game away in the first
period and they didn't then they ended up losing.
Speaker 3 (50:59):
Meanwhile, for you, yespervalstaid eighth to two now and his
ten starts has not lost in regulation the entire season.
Speaker 2 (51:05):
He's got seven straight victories. He's won in his last
six starts.
Speaker 3 (51:11):
He's got four shutouts, and he's a perfect three to
zero when it comes to the shootout. Now four shutouts
on the season, five in his National Hockey League career.
I mean the heater that this kid is on their
riding this, and I say they're riding it. They're still
doing the full blown goalie rotation. You have any problem
with that?
Speaker 2 (51:29):
No, I don't until one really takes over. And right
now they're both playing well, and so why not why
not ride it? And you know it's that you want
that healthy competition and they both want to win, and
they're both dialed in every night, So yeah, you might
as well just keep running with it.
Speaker 3 (51:48):
And like we said, because of the fact that the
schedule is so compressed, they're playing a lot of hockey game.
I don't know how they got away with this four
game road trip where they have a day in between
every game. It's amazing because the way they've been smashing
games in the every other the uh back to back
games and the three games and four nights. It's been
just continual, uh, right up until present day. So I
(52:10):
think you need both goaltenders. People are talking about, well,
couldn't you deal Philip Gustavson and get something in return.
There's teams like the Edmonton Oilers that need goaltending, but
I think the Wild need both these guys.
Speaker 2 (52:21):
You know, certainly that's probably going to be thrown out
there at some point, but you just you don't need
to you don't need to do that now. I think
Minnesota has enough other assets that they could deal. And
I'm Kevin, I you know, I made the statement early
and I don't think that this current team, with the
(52:44):
players that they have, is going to win a Stanley Cup. Now,
you can you know, if you if you made the
right deal and got the right player or players, yeah,
then then then you know then you you know, you
you look at that.
Speaker 3 (52:58):
So you know, we're just gonna have to see how
it all plays out. But you know, they're they're they're
playing great hockey. So via text that threw six four
six eight six from the six to one to two
area code Wow, Brett Blakemore. Welcome back Pat mcletty like
a new man on Beyond the Pond. Love his realistic
view of the wild roster.
Speaker 2 (53:17):
Good but not good enough yet for a Cup run,
is what they say here on the text line. Well,
I just I just think, you know, we'll get the negatrometer.
I wasn't negative, was I. I don't think it's negative.
I think it's just like if you can add another
top six guy and then you and then you slide
down guys that were in those roles. I just think
(53:39):
that makes you deeper and and you know you bringing
up Uh. I'll give you an example. If it was
Alex Tuck or or th Thompson. Okay, I'm just throwing
which one has a little bit more pizazed to it.
Oh my god, Alex Tuck five years ago, four years ago.
Take Thompson right now, right.
Speaker 3 (54:02):
Now, if I can pick one of them, I love
me somem Alex Tuck, but I'd want to teach Thompson.
Speaker 2 (54:06):
Yeah, because you're getting a guy who's a legitimate goal scorer,
and he's big, and you know he can play in
the middle, he can play the wing. You know, he
you know, obviously excuse me solidify your power play. And
then what that does, Kevin, is that other teams look
at Minnesota and say, huh, look what they added, you know,
(54:28):
and now they have this, this, this and this, you know,
watch out for this team. And so I just, you know,
I just think if they can swing some type of deal.
Now there's other teams out there that want them and
gonna probably make a big offer and all that kind
of stuff. But man, Minnesota, they have the money. I
(54:49):
think they have the assets. Is Bill Garon is he.
Speaker 3 (54:56):
Bold enough to move someone a fan favorite or whoever
that is, to get that player that may elevate them.
Speaker 2 (55:06):
I don't think there's any doubt that he's bold enough.
Can you pull it off?
Speaker 3 (55:09):
The problem is you got to have you know, it's
got to be a two way conversation there. He's got
to have someone willing to deal. And I think that's
been kind of the issue here with with the Buffalo
Sabers as of you know, going by the reporting, what
we've heard in the last few years, you know, is
the fact that they didn't want with the wild we're
offering for JJ, peterca Alex Talk, Tage, Tomas.
Speaker 2 (55:29):
Depends what you offered right, so obviously wasn't good enough.
Speaker 3 (55:32):
Real quick, we've got a special guest on the line.
We've got it by the name of Scott Gomez. What
a goal. The US Hockey Hall of Fame, right, will
(56:00):
row by four members over the course of the next
week Wednesday at River Center. Amongst the guys going in,
Scott Gomez nice enough to join us here on Beyond
the Pond. Scott, that's Pat. Nope, too much of an intro,
I guess for Scott gomeans, let's do this. We'll get
him back on the line, Brett. Let's take a quick
break and we'll try to get just Scott Gomez and
Tony Scott here from Youth Hockey Hub.
Speaker 2 (56:21):
When we continue, I'm beyond the pond. Beyond the Pond continues,
and as promise, we're checking in with Scott Gomez going
into the US Hockey Hall of Thulane Hockey Hall of Fame,
Class of.
Speaker 3 (56:36):
Twenty twenty five. Scott, that's Pat mcletty. I'm Kevin Fallons.
Sounds like you had a dad moment. You went to
put in the earphones, press pressed end instead of connect,
and it was just one of those moments for you.
Speaker 11 (56:48):
I got I got rid of the Apple headphones because
I thought got talked by these kids that it'd be better,
and it's a putting them in. It's a pain because
I always hit this button and it turns off. So
sorry about that, guys.
Speaker 2 (56:59):
No, and then Scott obviously, congratulations. What what an achievement
to get inducted into the US Hockey Hall of Fame.
What are your thoughts when what we were your thoughts
when you first heard that you're going to be inducted.
Speaker 6 (57:13):
Well, I.
Speaker 11 (57:15):
Was golfing in Montreal with a couple of friends and
I kept getting this number calling me and you know,
you know it is now. I didn't know that number,
so I didn't.
Speaker 9 (57:24):
I didn't pick it up.
Speaker 2 (57:24):
And then Dish called.
Speaker 11 (57:27):
Me from the text me from the US Hockey He's like, hey,
you got to answer this, and I was like, what
is it like? And then he's like, you need to
answer the call. And then I got it and yeah,
they you know, they told me I was I was inducted,
and you know it. It kind of funny because when
I got it, it hit me that the first thought
(57:48):
I had was like that first camp in Saint Cloud, Minnesota,
the selection team camp where it's kind of the first
the first taste of it, Like you're going to see
the best of the best in the US.
Speaker 5 (58:00):
At your age.
Speaker 6 (58:01):
And it's weird.
Speaker 11 (58:02):
Guy when I when he told me I was in,
that's that's like the first thing I thought. It was
like that first time going to Saint Cloud and uh,
you know, that's that's kind of what happened.
Speaker 2 (58:10):
I mean, we all grow up playing and you know,
we love the game, and we we we we want
to play and and and you know, try to do
our best at Teta, et cetera. But this, I mean,
as a player, you don't think about, yeah, I'm going
to be a Hall of Famer, I'm gonna do this,
that and the other things. So I mean, what was
it like for you growing up playing and achieving what
(58:31):
you did well?
Speaker 11 (58:34):
You know, growing up in Alaska, Anchorage, Alaska, it was
you know, from the time I, I don't know eleven,
kind of got on the map. I guess it was
you know, you have to leave. You're not gonna You're
not gonna make it out of there if you stay.
And of course, you know, by the time I'm thirteen,
fourteen and I'm arping all over my dad about that,
and you know, he gave me the big greatest advice.
(58:56):
He's like, it doesn't matter where you are, if you're
good enough, to'll find you. But I think people forget
that our era or my generation, it was never you know,
it was never grown the NHL. It was to get
a college scholarship, right, and that that was the NHL
for us. I mean obviously you dreamt I mean, yeah,
of course we all dremped that plane in the NHL,
but the real dream was to get a college scholarship
(59:18):
so your parents would have to pay for college. And
I know some people have a hard time believing that,
just the way it is now with the kids and
all the thoughts are just pro pro pro, But no,
our generation, it was literally I mean, me and Mike
Model were just talking the other day, like one of
the best shows ever was that was the College Hockey
Show every Saturday, every Saturday morning, Sunday mornings, and I mean,
(59:38):
that's what you lived for.
Speaker 3 (59:41):
We're talking to Scott Gomez going into the US Hockey
Hall of Hall of Fame Class of twenty twenty five.
US Hockey Hall of Fame Induction ceremony coming up on
Wednesday night at River Center. Tickets available at US Hockey
Hall of Fame dot com. Limited tickets are available. Event
includes reception and dinner.
Speaker 2 (59:57):
Scott.
Speaker 3 (59:58):
Earlier in the program, we had Zach Parize and we
asked him to talk about you, and he was very complimentary,
by the way, before I turned this around on you.
Speaker 2 (01:00:06):
So tell me what you remember.
Speaker 3 (01:00:08):
We of course remember Zach Parize here with a Minnesota while,
but you played with him in his early days they're
in New Jersey. What do you remember of Zach Paris
and the Devil's uniform.
Speaker 13 (01:00:18):
I remember the Devil's really really excited about this kid,
like kind of the steel of the draft or you know,
I don't know who was in his year, but they
were really really I mean there was a hype on him,
meaning you know, and Zach I first met him at
actually the Olympic camp.
Speaker 11 (01:00:35):
We didn't really know each other. And then you could
tell he was going to be he was going to
be special. I mean, he just the work ethic.
Speaker 13 (01:00:42):
This kid had.
Speaker 11 (01:00:44):
Just a great kid. I mean, he was just someone
that you knew was going to be good because.
Speaker 6 (01:00:49):
He put in the work and then you just saw it.
Speaker 11 (01:00:51):
You saw him, you saw it every day the little,
you know, I think so while sort of say, but
you saw something was there, and then I think, you know,
one of the uh, one of one of the top
years I had was was playing with Zach and Jail,
I believe, and I had some great years with Elios
and Joe, but I mean with Zach, uh and he
was young, and I mean he was just you knew.
Speaker 5 (01:01:11):
He was gonna be good.
Speaker 11 (01:01:12):
You know, he's gonna be great. I mean, he's just
the uh, he's just a leader on and off.
Speaker 2 (01:01:16):
It's just a great kid.
Speaker 11 (01:01:17):
And uh, you know, I mean he he moved down
the house or he moved down the street from us,
and I remember he uh yeah, he had a pool
table and he tried to sell me a pool table
but I had to go get it or something like that.
I remember, like here, the rookie, either take that thing
off and you bring it over.
Speaker 6 (01:01:33):
But uh, it was it was.
Speaker 2 (01:01:36):
He's a special kid.
Speaker 6 (01:01:37):
He always has been.
Speaker 11 (01:01:37):
He's you know, he's a he's a great human him
and his family and but yeah, from pretty early on,
you knew he was gonna be uh, he was gonna
be one of the special ones. And I mean because
just around the net, the tenacity was with the park.
Everything about him, I mean, he he was a complete player,
and uh, not only that, he's a complete human being.
I mean, Zach is just you know, I love a
kid of dat.
Speaker 6 (01:01:56):
He's unreal.
Speaker 2 (01:01:57):
I think that's what we remember about him.
Speaker 3 (01:01:59):
In a wild you and formed the beating he took
in front of the goltender, the cross checks to the
small of his back.
Speaker 2 (01:02:05):
Over the course of his time here in Minnesota.
Speaker 3 (01:02:07):
For you, Scott, sixteen years in the National Hockey League,
a couple of Stanley Cups. And now after your playing
career finished, you were behind the bench there as an
assistant coach, but now you're the head coach at the
Chicago Steel in the USHL. What's that transition been like?
Speaker 2 (01:02:23):
And what's it like? You know, we're in the hat
and whistle.
Speaker 11 (01:02:27):
Oh, it's you know if after I was done, I
did the TV things for a little bit and then
you know, Doug Wade. I was fortunate they asked me
to come on with the New York Founders and Louke
came in was from Merylo came in and I stayed
the second year. I kind of wasn't really doing much
after moving out in New York, city, and my business
(01:02:47):
manager kind of kind of suggested I got to do something,
and you know, hockey's in my blood. And I was
fortunate enough that the Sir Eagles, you know, I just
went to say, hey, I'll volunteer and became this stint.
And then the next year it took over and I
got I got lucky with with Mike Model. Uh you know,
we grew up together, Hollie Baker Winter, you know, he
(01:03:09):
he ran the d A, ran the Ford, and we
just we just enjoyed it. And then the Chicago Steel,
you know, it became it became open and uh yeah,
I mean it was It's been great just uh with
these kids. I mean, you know, it's the third time
not looking to this is the path to go back
to the NHR and nothing like that. It's uh, this
is all about them and just you know, just seeing them.
(01:03:31):
You want to see them develop and and you know
it's a lot of the things that you teach them
is it's not coming from me. It was passed down
for me to me, you know. And I was fortunate
to be on those great Devils teams and all those
great veterans that that you know, still still in touch
with the contact with and so to see your kid, uh,
you know, hopefully can fill his dreams. That's that's that's
(01:03:53):
the best part about this. It's it's it's unreal to
see these kids.
Speaker 2 (01:03:55):
Awesome stuff.
Speaker 3 (01:03:56):
Scott, he enjoyed the wee enjoy your time there with
with the Chicago Steele in the USHL and enjoy this week.
Speaker 2 (01:04:02):
We look forward to seeing me in Saint Paul. They're
at the River Center.
Speaker 11 (01:04:05):
All right, guys, thank you so much.
Speaker 2 (01:04:07):
Yeah, congrats again.
Speaker 3 (01:04:08):
There he is Scott Gomez twenty seventh overall, picked by
the Blues in nineteen ninety eight. Patrick born in Anchorage, Alaska,
and a lengthy career in the National Hockey League over
a thousand games seven hundred and some points. First Latino
to win the calder As Rookie of the Year in
two thousand and you know, he brought.
Speaker 2 (01:04:26):
Up watching the College Hockey Show and our good friend
Jim Rich was the one who did this show. And
you know, it was probably the most popular show back
then in the eighties and the nineties. I wish they
would bring it back because that's where you got all
your information.
Speaker 7 (01:04:45):
Now.
Speaker 2 (01:04:45):
I mean, granted, now you can get information anywhere, but
it was.
Speaker 3 (01:04:48):
It was just it was a great show, and you know,
be nice to bring that back popular, But was it
as popular as the Youth Hockey Hub is today. With
our good friend Tony Scott, who's very busy, we got
to squeeze any your time.
Speaker 2 (01:05:02):
I know you you're gonna refer a couple of minutes
for us. Huh, Well that's my fault.
Speaker 5 (01:05:06):
Yeah, no, boys, I'm I'm reffing uh right now. I
got a game at eleven forty five over here at
blooming tonight's sharking. A couple of games to pick up
this afternoon to watch too. So it's a busy day,
but a great day for hockey. As my good friend
Curt Johnson's grandpa used to say.
Speaker 2 (01:05:23):
Yeah right. So give us some of the highlights.
Speaker 3 (01:05:25):
What's going on in the in your world these days
other than reffing hockey games.
Speaker 5 (01:05:30):
Well, we're up at the start of the loose this weekend, Squirts,
Peewee's Banham's a lot of good hockey games. So that
today is Saturday, it's moving day. So here's some big
games going up there. A very craft day, if you
know what I'm saying. Ryan Kraft's kid Owen is playing
in the Banham Double A number two versus Number three.
They take on Austine Maple Road today. His youngest son,
(01:05:50):
Darby Kraft, for the morning Score Day, takes on Hastings
to get into the bracket play tomorrow and then a
really good game in Pee Wee Double A at three
forty five today.
Speaker 9 (01:05:59):
Minute talk on East Grand Forks.
Speaker 5 (01:06:01):
These are top five teams trying to get into the
semi finals over at here at Tage Arena on Sunday morning.
Speaker 3 (01:06:08):
Awesome, Well that would be great over there at the
Spirit of Duluth. How about boys high school hockey? What
do you got for some highlights for today?
Speaker 5 (01:06:15):
You know, Pat, I swear I'm not just calling on you.
Every week is happening there.
Speaker 6 (01:06:23):
I have to be there.
Speaker 5 (01:06:25):
Sivving hosts Shakaby at the Memorial Building today. Shakaby is
a very good double A team. They have high double
A wins already, h Soda Shibbing, Hibbings undefeated. I expect
the Blue Jackets to win this game, but don't count off.
Shakaby is a very good team. And then Hill Murray
travels over to Rogers today. Rogers, a preseason top ten team,
(01:06:49):
has got got healthy left of the weeks. That should
be a really good game in Rogers.
Speaker 2 (01:06:53):
How about on the girls side.
Speaker 5 (01:06:55):
There's two big games on the girls side.
Speaker 6 (01:06:57):
Obviously.
Speaker 5 (01:06:58):
The biggest one is Johnny pole'snumber one Hill Murray team
travels over to Victoria today to take on number two
Holy Family. I'll be going there right after this game
I ref. And then up in World today number two
World hosts number three Breath. If you remember any of
the Breck World rivalries in the in our previous decade,
(01:07:18):
will that be the twenty tens. I think it's going
to be back again World Strong Wreck Song. That could
be a great game. It's the truth and reconciliation games
today up in World where they wear special jerseys to
honor their Native American friends in World.
Speaker 2 (01:07:34):
Describe yourself as a ref. What's your style?
Speaker 5 (01:07:37):
I try to let the game. Here's what I look at.
I grew up playing hockey at Lake of the Isles
with ten kids at a time. I look at myself
as a guy out there administering ten kids on the ice, playing,
letting them play as much as possible, and trying to
keep them as safe as possible.
Speaker 2 (01:07:53):
They go, what happens when they yell at you though.
The coaches.
Speaker 5 (01:07:57):
Oh, that's a great question. I don't talk there unless
there is a disallowed goal or a major penalty.
Speaker 2 (01:08:06):
Other than that, they can yell all they want. Last thing,
We'll let you go on this note. What do we find?
A youth Hockey hub dot com? If we go there
today or this week, you're.
Speaker 5 (01:08:15):
Gonna find podcasts, Oh my gosh, too many podcasts. Seven
podcasts released every week. You're gonna find a computerized formula
for all youth hockey teams, TVBS, ten bees, bannabs, fifteen
as you name it, and then great staff rankings and
the great just just a lot to learn about youth
hockey and Minnesota. You'll find it here on that websode.
Speaker 2 (01:08:35):
I don't know how you guys do it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:36):
I would strongly recommend Tony having Pat mccletty in there.
You hit me in there for like an hour and
a half and it was. It was a fun conversation.
They have a great studio right up the road up
there in blooming I can't beat that. Bring in there anyway.
Speaker 5 (01:08:50):
All right, Tony, you got deal in soon. You'll love it,
love it.
Speaker 3 (01:08:57):
Our weekly contributions from Tony Sky at Youth Hockey Hub
at youth hockey hub dot com. Find them on Twitter
at youth Hockey Hub. They do a great job. He's
wrapping between all the content they put together, too.
Speaker 2 (01:09:11):
I get tired thinking about it.
Speaker 3 (01:09:12):
I did go in there for an hour and a half.
He says, hey, would you mind coming in and talking?
I said I will. It's not exciting, it's actually obviously boring.
I don't know and a half. Well, yeah, but I
mean I can talk, but I don't think it's exciting
content to talking about myself. But all right, all right,
let's do this speaking of guys we love to talk to.
How about the schloss? Well, to get back to the
(01:09:34):
college Hockey conversation, Bob mackenzie of College Hockey joined us
after the break, and we still got to give away
some tickets.
Speaker 2 (01:09:40):
We're gonna do it randomly.
Speaker 3 (01:09:41):
I think I got a couple of pair to the
Wild and Stars coming up Thursday at Grand Casino Arena.
Speaker 2 (01:09:46):
They get rid of this four game road trip.
Speaker 3 (01:09:48):
They're back on whole ice for four in a row,
including Thursday, and you can win tickets. I need talkbacks,
I need texts at six four, six eighty six and
we'll get to that plus the schloss.
Speaker 2 (01:09:57):
When we continue, I'll be on the pond.
Speaker 14 (01:10:04):
Hello, mister Palmas. Would just like to say this Wild
season has just been a joy to watch. You started slow, well,
what a great run they've been on and to freeze
off and the gold tending, it's been amazing. Goldie and
the whole crew would love to go watch and play
Go Wild.
Speaker 3 (01:10:22):
It's been a fun season to listen to on your radio.
It's your hashtag new TV back on the airwaves tonight.
We got two late ones to finish off this road
trip tonight at eight forty five Monday, eight forty five
tonight in Vancouver and then on Monday in Seattle to
take on.
Speaker 2 (01:10:40):
Four game. It's a four game road trip. It takes
you from Edmonton to Calgary to Vancouver to Seattle, and
typically at least one set of those would be back
to back, but they've got a day in between each
of them. Get the It's kind of nice.
Speaker 3 (01:10:53):
It would be nice to get well, especially coming off
of whatever you want to say. I say it was
a lackluster performance. John Hines says it was. I can't
think of the exact quote, but he was not a
fan of their effort against Buffalo or Calgary. So you
have the opportunity here to finish it off with even
if you got three out of four points in these
final two games, you have the opportunity, including tonight against
(01:11:15):
a Vancouver Canucks team that I looked at their roster
they should be good.
Speaker 2 (01:11:19):
They're not. Oh well, all I read is that they're
gonna trade everybody. And nothing's happened yet. And I'm sure
you know, these things take time, and you know, Quinn
Hughes going, sure Wood going, you know, who knows.
Speaker 3 (01:11:32):
I was watching their game last night, I think it
was against Utah, and it just felt to me like
Pederson was just unengaged. He just did not look like
it just looked like he was just kind of going
through the motions like God, get me out of and
they ended up losing for one to the There's a man.
Speaker 2 (01:11:46):
There's a lot.
Speaker 6 (01:11:46):
You know.
Speaker 2 (01:11:47):
You look at each team and and you know, you
look at their quote, you know, quote unquote stars or
top players, and you know, for him being their top player, yeah,
I just you know, I don't see it enough. I
would love him behind the scenes looking like Pederson thing was,
you know, Yeah, I just because Horn seems like he
(01:12:08):
should be on Buffalo there you go. No, I mean,
look at look at the number the really good players.
They can't get on their they can't win.
Speaker 3 (01:12:17):
Yeah, it's it's amazing and they are going to get
fleeced at some point Vancouver may as well. But let's
see what happens tonight again. Pregame at eight forty five,
puck drops just after nine o'clock right here on FM
one hundred point three the fan. That's what's going on
in the NHL in college hockey. If I can't believe
we waited this long to talk to Brad schlossman of
(01:12:38):
the Grand Forks Herald, and now we will finally make
good on that.
Speaker 2 (01:12:41):
How you doing there, Bradley?
Speaker 11 (01:12:43):
Great?
Speaker 2 (01:12:44):
How you guys doing good? You're not mad at me
for you getting bumped last week?
Speaker 9 (01:12:48):
Are you?
Speaker 2 (01:12:48):
I forgot it was because it wasn't me. I didn't bump.
Yet I get a text saying, let's how about we
dumped Schloss and the way it was gone with the
Bob Mackenzie of college hockey. Then I'm like, were you hurt?
Speaker 11 (01:13:02):
So mad?
Speaker 2 (01:13:02):
I think you were relieved more than anything, Brad.
Speaker 3 (01:13:04):
If I had to guess, I was blowing up fall
the text about how upseid I was.
Speaker 2 (01:13:10):
You know it took you eight hours to get back.
I'm going to start this by I always ask you
whenever you you know, usually come on the first show
of the year, but you got bumped. Who you pick
for the what do we call it the Frozen four
this year?
Speaker 6 (01:13:27):
I know?
Speaker 15 (01:13:27):
Yeah, I had, Yeah, I had Michigan State was my
preseason number one team. Okay, I'm trying to think now
off the top of my head, you know the one Okay, here,
I'm bringing it up right now as we speak. Michigan
State number one. I had Western Michigan number two.
Speaker 2 (01:13:47):
Wrong, wrong, but go ahead.
Speaker 15 (01:13:50):
Probably probably They Also, Western Michigan just lost their best
defenseman for their years, so that really hurts. Yeah, univis and.
Speaker 6 (01:14:00):
Injury.
Speaker 15 (01:14:00):
He's out for the rest of the season, so that's
a big loss. Number three, I'm definitely wrong. I had
Boston University there, okay, too young, they're struggling. Number four
I had Denver, and number five I had Wisconsin. Told
her my top.
Speaker 2 (01:14:14):
Five interesting, very interesting close I have.
Speaker 15 (01:14:21):
Yeah, Wisconsin was a good pick, is not it?
Speaker 6 (01:14:24):
Yeah?
Speaker 2 (01:14:25):
Wisconsin kind of they're they're they're showing who they are.
They're they're they're a pretty darn good hockey team. I
didn't have them as high on my list at the
beginning of the year, but you know, they're they are
back to playing Mike Hastings type of hockey, big, older,
(01:14:46):
not give up anything. How they flipp it so quickly
because it wasn't that bad it takes long ago. Yeah, well,
I mean he's brought in a couple of guys obviously
from his prior team. But I was just clicking and
that's just the style that they play, right Sah.
Speaker 15 (01:15:02):
Yeah, I think it's a really good mix. They've they've
got some younger, really skilled players mixed in with some
of the older four year guys you mentioned the guys
he brought over from his previous stop. This is kind
of interesting. You look at their top four scorers and
the leading scorer is Gavin Morrissey who was committed to
Minnesota States and twitched it over there with Christian Fitzgerald
(01:15:27):
who came over. And number four is Simon Tassi came
over from Minnesota State. So he is thriving with some
of the guys he has over at Minnesota States, and
you know they they've eli Pulver's been in. Uh he
didn't actually not bring him over because he played there,
but he's kind of got in the net a little
(01:15:49):
bit here and then played well. So yeah, they've got
a really good mix. I feel though they've they've got
some skill guys, they've got some tougher to play against guys.
Their d course pretty good. It's a little bit older now,
and yeah, that's a well built team.
Speaker 2 (01:16:04):
Well, I tell you, slass, I certainly want your opinion
on this. I you know, with the with the Canadian
junior kids coming in and adding a little more should
we say, age and experience and skill and and such.
I tell you college hockey, I mean, good luck picking
(01:16:26):
a winner because you know, on any given night now
there's in my opinion, thirty teams this year that are
in it. Am I wrong?
Speaker 6 (01:16:36):
No?
Speaker 15 (01:16:36):
I think you know, just in general, no matter what
sport you're dealing with, the deeper the player pool is,
the more parody you're going to have.
Speaker 5 (01:16:44):
Yep.
Speaker 15 (01:16:46):
And that's why we'll see like high school teams that
are just super dominant, whereas the NHL you just don't,
you know, it's you go up levels and and just
so the depth of the player pool is really packed
in college hockey this year, and I think some of
the top teams may have gotten like ten to fifteen
(01:17:08):
percent better with the CHL and I think the non
traditional powerhouse has probably got about like twenty five percent better.
Speaker 2 (01:17:15):
Yep.
Speaker 15 (01:17:15):
So I think the net gain was with the depth
programs even though everyone benefited and we're seeing some really
entertaining hockey. I feel like I just saw Amidge State
last weekend. That's as much skill as i've seen there
right there. They're really skilled, fun to watch team, and
you're just seeing that all over the country.
Speaker 6 (01:17:37):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:17:37):
Well, I look at the CCCHA and there are six
teams that you can put in a hat and pick
one and they could win it. I mean, are they're
capable of winning?
Speaker 11 (01:17:48):
You know?
Speaker 2 (01:17:49):
And just well you've seen Mamiji State play. I've seen
you know, Minnesota State play and Bumigee and Sat Thomas.
These are good hockey teams.
Speaker 15 (01:17:59):
Yeah, I don't think I've seen the CCHA this good,
and I think a big reason for that is the
CHL pool being opened. A lot of teams benefited from that.
Interestingly enough, in Minnesota State is probably the best team
in the league. And they did not jump into that pool,
but some of the other schools did. And I think
(01:18:21):
we're seeing this is the deepest CCHA I've seen. It's
probably the best quality the league has been since it started.
And yeah, it's it's been fun to watch if you
if you like college hockey, I mean, boy, there's never
been a better time.
Speaker 3 (01:18:38):
Talking to Brad Schlassman, one of our favorites here on
Beyond the Pond from the Grand Forks Harold. Find him
on Twitter or ex at Schlossman GF. You can also
find him online Grand forkshrold dot com, slash und Hockey.
We talked a little bit earlier in the show about
the Golden Golfhers. You got to see him up there
in Grand Forks in the middle of October something like that.
(01:18:58):
I think they ended up being a split Golphers getting
the second of two with a five to one victory.
Give us, you know, as a guy that follows college hockey,
and you got a chance to see the Gophers up close,
and of course they grab a lot of the headlines
here locally. What have you thought about the Golphers as
they go through basically what looks to be like a transition.
Ye're going from the high talent that they had in
(01:19:19):
their roster last year compared to what they're trying to
build now with under Bob Motskow.
Speaker 2 (01:19:25):
Yeah.
Speaker 15 (01:19:27):
I like this freshman class that they have. I view
this freshman class is maybe more of a little bit
of a traditional let's say Denver class. These are like
the mid round pick types. They're not there. I'm going
to come in as a freshman and be a Logan
(01:19:47):
koolie right right. But they're going to be really good
three four year players. But they're They're not guys that
can come in and carry the team right away. And
I think the back end probably isn't good enough to
be in the top echelon of the Big Ten this season.
(01:20:08):
So uh, they are going to go through some ups
and downs this season. They already have. But if you
are a Gopher fan, I think the part that you
have to be excited about is when you start looking
down the line, here, this is a class that's going
to be around. They're going to be really really good
juniors and seniors, and then as they get to that age,
(01:20:32):
the guys that are going to bring in in a
couple of years are going to be the you know,
guys who impact right away. You know why Colin will
impact right away next year for Minnesota.
Speaker 2 (01:20:42):
Let me get a good yeah, let me let me
get your thoughts on this. Lasses you know, I know
North Dakota is awfully young also, right and and you
know you have some high end guys that are going
to be number one, number one picks. But that being said,
with the influx of these Canadian junior guys, guys that
are older, a little bit more grizzled, maybe not have
(01:21:05):
the skill of some of the younger guys like North
Dakota has, or you know, other other teams or Michigan
or Michigan State or what have you.
Speaker 4 (01:21:16):
You know, will.
Speaker 2 (01:21:20):
Being older help you go farther even though you might
not be as talented.
Speaker 15 (01:21:28):
I think it still does. I think you still need
to mix in the older players with the younger players.
And my best example of that right now is looking
at BU. Bu has nineteen NHL draft picks. I don't
know if a college hockey team has ever had NHL picks,
(01:21:49):
and Bu's going through struggles like this. They're just so young.
They have one senior on their team and they're basically
a five hundred team right now, and I think watching that,
it's like, I still think there is some value to
having a really good mix of those four year guys
(01:22:09):
with some of the younger players. And you know, we'll
see how the ear plays out, but the teams that
have been super super young are not winning the national title.
If you want to go for a Minnesota example for
your local audience, the best, you know, you look back
at that team that played in the title game against Quinnipiac.
(01:22:31):
That team had the mix. They were old on the
back end. They had some of the younger high end
players like a snug root and Akolie, but really the
anchor of that team was like junior Brack Favors, senior
Ryan Johnson, senior Jackson Lacomb Like they were old in
certain areas, and I think that is the perfect mix
(01:22:54):
for a college hockey team.
Speaker 2 (01:22:55):
We had Bruce and he called last night, it's a
big win for U m D over Western Michigan. Scott
Sandlin's got it turned around there, doesn't he.
Speaker 15 (01:23:08):
Yeah, And they're really being carried by one line. It's
really something that everyone goes into a game against Minnesota
Duluth knowing that if you shut down that top line,
you're probably gonna win and nobody can do it. And
(01:23:29):
like to me, Max Plant is the guy that makes
everything happen for that line.
Speaker 6 (01:23:34):
Max is like.
Speaker 15 (01:23:35):
Zam Plant and Jason Chagabe are good players, Max is different.
He is special. Like I think he's ready for the
NHL Wow who He really drives everything on that line
and you know, I think he's gonna win the Hobe
Baker Award. He's one of the better players I've seen
in the NCHC. And then they mixed him some. They've
(01:23:57):
got some d who are starting to get a little
bit older. Tie answer to sophomore so he's still young,
but he's really good. Adam Kleeber, he's a sophomore, but
he's pretty good. It's that sophomore class that's carrying the
Bulldogs right now. Adam Guyana and that's yeah, finally starting. Yeah,
that's been big. He he struggled last year, he went
(01:24:17):
through some ups and downs.
Speaker 9 (01:24:18):
He's figured it out.
Speaker 15 (01:24:19):
So really though that, I mean there they go as
far as that sophomore class takes them. And how that
that top line. Everyone knows all you need to do
is shut that top line down. Nobody can do it.
Speaker 2 (01:24:29):
To that point, it sounds like Steve Eiserman was in
the building last night.
Speaker 3 (01:24:33):
Max Plant drafted in the second round in twenty twenty
four by the Detroit Red Wings, so Steve Wiserman definitely
keeping an eye on him.
Speaker 2 (01:24:40):
Are you coming in town later this month for the
World Juniors? Will you be here?
Speaker 15 (01:24:45):
I will be there, so only miss I think the
quarterfinal rounds I'll be I think I'm going to be
camped out probably at Mariucci for Canada. Okay, you know
e j Emery from North Dakota is going to be
on Team USA. I think I we'll see Team Canada
is going to announce their roster on Monday. I don't
know if there's gonna be any fluctuation with NHL guys
(01:25:06):
that they might release or maybe not. But there's a
couple of candidates, some of the young guys you talked
about Pat from the CHL that North Dakota picked up,
Cole Reshkie and Keaton Barhoff would be the main two.
Maybe Ali Josephson gets in the mix too, but there
will be a lot of people at the X. I
might go over to Mary Yucci.
Speaker 2 (01:25:26):
I would bet we're going to knock on your door
here over the course of the next month is that
the World Juniors gets heated up, because that's going to
be so much process because you that's unacceptable. That's unacceptable.
We will not take answer. So don't be mad at
me Schloss Okay, don't get mad.
Speaker 6 (01:25:43):
We're all good.
Speaker 2 (01:25:44):
Thanks.
Speaker 15 (01:25:46):
Thanks guys, having on.
Speaker 3 (01:25:48):
Too, Brad Schlassman again. Follow him on Twitter or x
at Schlossman GF. He works for the Grand Forts Harold
Online Grand Forks Herald dot com slash U n D Hockey.
Speaker 2 (01:25:58):
It'll be weird. I mean, I don't think the golfers
play until January now take Yeah, they're off, so we'll
have to figure out something to do.
Speaker 3 (01:26:06):
And the World Juniors is going to be a great
outlet for us to be able to talk some hockey
during that abyss, at least from a college hockey level.
It's gonna be great now knowing that the Schloss is
going to be in our backyard, whether you're doing from
from your studio or what we certainly could.
Speaker 2 (01:26:19):
I hadn't even thought about that. I haven't thought about
the end of this. Yeah, you have to look at
the the end of the month. So looking forward to that, Brett.
How about you?
Speaker 3 (01:26:27):
What what do you got going on the rest of
the day. You're gonna watch soccer, You're gonna go who
knows what.
Speaker 10 (01:26:33):
Shockingly, we actually won a football match today, which is unbelievable.
Such great news. Yeah, World Cup draw happened. No, it's uh,
it's football. There's conference championships and then football tomorrow. Yeah, heavy, awesome.
It was great to have Brett Blakemore's breakaways back on
the airwaves. How about you, Patrick, what do you got
going the rest of day? You're gonna in front of
the team.
Speaker 2 (01:26:52):
Yeah, I'm gonna watch football day. I'm gonna do a little,
uh work on my legs and watch football.
Speaker 3 (01:26:57):
No, go for hockey tonight. So what do you what
games are you going to be paying attention to on
this Saturday? Michigan Michigan State. We make it past nine
o'clock hockey?
Speaker 2 (01:27:06):
No, you don't know? Wild hockey for you tonight?
Speaker 3 (01:27:09):
Well maybe yeah, they're late after Yeah, see if they
can get back on that horse they there doing. Point
Street come to an end, yes, and don't panic. I
mean you're wild fans. They're gonna lose, you know, they
might lose two in a row. You know, hopefully not tonight,
but you know that that may happen.
Speaker 2 (01:27:25):
It's okay, it's vaulted between the place tonight most likely,
and it's a when looking for an eighth consecutive victory,
the no goals giving up.
Speaker 10 (01:27:32):
Speaking of your legs, I'll be the one to ask,
and how are your how's your health situation?
Speaker 2 (01:27:36):
What's the update? I am progressing and working hard every
day and you know, just a long process, but getting there.
Speaker 3 (01:27:43):
Two weeks in a row we've had you in in
studio and tea. That's the best news of all because
then we know that you're headed in the right direction.
Speaker 2 (01:27:50):
So absolutely, let's make it three in a row.
Speaker 3 (01:27:51):
Next, speaking birthday, let we don't need to say birthday
for Pat mclety and Brad Blake.
Speaker 6 (01:28:00):
Thanks for listening.
Speaker 3 (01:28:02):
I'm younger than you, but much older than Brett and
Alex as a matter of facts, Thanks gentlemen.
Speaker 2 (01:28:07):
That was a lot of fun. Thanks to everyone for
joining us too.
Speaker 3 (01:28:10):
The US Hockey Hall of Fame, their induction ceremony is Wednesday,
and to help celebrate it, we had Zach Parisi and
Scott Gomez on Brett Larson from St Club State, Bruce
Sisky as well. Of course, we had Brett Blakemore's Breakaways,

Hockey Hub an.
