Speaker 1 (00:00):
Gopher Football Sunday. I'm justin Guard. We are here until
nine o'clock, and we were back after a bye week
a couple of weeks ago and then back to back
international games. It feels like it's been about a month
since we've done a show here on a Sunday morning,
and it is because it has been about a month.
But we are happy to be back. Ryan Burns from
Gopher Illustrated dot Com is going to join me about
(00:21):
fifteen minutes from now as we review a bizarre, strange, difficult, interesting,
necessary victory over Purdue last night twenty seven to twenty.
The Gophers get to win on homecoming to improve to
four and two and two and one in the Big Ten.
Now have a short week before Nebraska comes to Huntington
Banks Stadium on Friday night. We've talked about it that
(00:44):
it was a major month for Gopher football, that this
month was probably going to tell the tale of which
way this season was going to go and how people
would eventually grade it out. And you had three games
at home won against Iowa and all of them imminately
win a bo and you had to find a way
to probably take at least three games out of that
four game stretch to make sure this would be deemed
(01:07):
quote unquote a successful season, and it did not look
good last night. For long stretches of time. If you're
new to the show, what we do in this first
segment we talk about what we like, what we didn't like.
We'll do that throughout the show as well, and you
can participate by hitting the bratsh on Brian Kfean text
line sixty four six eight six with your thoughts and
then we'll get to Burnsy about eight point fifteen. Sometimes
(01:29):
you play really well and you get a victory. Sometimes
you play a little bit more back and forth, like
the Rutgers game a few weeks ago. Sometimes you need
some help to get things done, and last night was
definitely a game where the Gophers needed some help and
the Purdue boiler Makers still winless in the Big Ten,
(01:50):
absolutely obliged. PJ. Flex says all the time, more games
are lost than one. It's one of those phrases that
he says quite a bit, and it was on full
display last night. That was exhibit, I believe because with
about nine minutes, well really throughout much of the second half,
I was standing there trying to figure out how the
Gophers were going to pull it together and pull out
(02:10):
a victory that they absolutely had to have. They did
not play well for most of the night last night.
That's pretty obvious. The defense was gashed in the run
game again. Devin Makabee, guy who's continued to kill them
for basically the last three times that they've played, seemingly
was getting whatever he wanted. The defense couldn't keep Purdue
quarterback Ryan Brown in the pocket in the first half.
(02:30):
He was scrambling all over the place. Gophers looked like
they had him lined up multiple times for sacks. Couldn't
bring him down. And not only could they not bring
him down, he'd then pick up a first down or
he'd then pick up a touchdown. Gopher offense couldn't run
the ball. Drake Lindsay, as the head coach said to
me after the game, wasn't at his best for much
of the night. But after a series of Purdue miscues
(02:53):
and a series of bizarre decisions which we'll talk about,
I said on the game broadcasts, it must have been
with about eight minutes to go in the fourth quarter,
the Gophers have no choice but to take this game.
We have to be blunt about it. They have no
choice but to take this game despite all the bad
things that had happened and the struggles that they'd had
on offense, and we're going to talk about those as
(03:13):
the hour goes on. Too many presents have been handed
to them and they have to figure out a way
to just take this game, and they relied on their
game changers to do it. On the drive that they
absolutely had to have. The one that tied the game
at twenty, Drake Lindsay was good enough. He wasn't great
the entire drive again, they had trouble running the ball again,
(03:34):
but he completed his last three passes on the drive,
including a big third and ten over the middle to
Javon Tracy that was right after a fourth and two
scramble that again you have to have. They had to
find a way to get a touchdown on that drive.
I don't even know if a field goal would have
been meaningful there, and they obviously agree. They went for
it on a fourth and two and ended up getting it.
(03:55):
That was at the produe twenty eight. That's about a
forty five yard field goal that they turned down. The
kicker had been good. He probably makes it from there,
but you had to find a way after all of
that to tie the game at twenty, and Drake Lindsay
was good enough there. The third down pass was great.
He had another third down I believe the Jalen Smith
on that drive as well to kind of get the
whole thing going. But he was good enough to get
(04:16):
it tied, and then Koy Perriche with his biggest play
of the season on that next drive. Everybody's been waiting
for Coy Parridge to do something in terms of changing
the game. I think he had a good couple of
weeks just playing good safety position. But Coy Parrish is
a playmaker. He's a game changer. He's a game wrecker,
and a lot of us were waiting for him to
(04:36):
do something. I would imagine he was number one in
line waiting to make a game changing play, and his
pick six obviously changes everything, puts the building back on fire,
gives the Gophers a little breathing room, and they end
up winning the game twenty seven to twenty. But if
I'm a Purdue fan today, I'm sick because they've played
(04:58):
better at times this season. They've got a first year coach,
they've got eighty new players. We'll talk to Burnsy about
all of that. They hung with Illinois for a while,
they hung with USC for a while. They definitely have
good offensive weapons. The quarterback made a lot of really
good plays with his legs and with his arms. We
talked about maccabie. They've got guys that can do some things,
but they've been so up and down, and they they'll
(05:20):
give you the ball almost at will, and they did
that again last night, and that's a big reason that
they that they lost. But I'm thinking about how that
fourth quarter, really the second half was managed that allowed
the Gophers to stay in the game. And sometimes you
got to take these gifts. We've talked about it with
Kevin O'Connell and his pension for winning close games. He
doesn't make the time management mistakes very often, he doesn't
(05:44):
make the game script mistakes very often. He gives them
a chance to kind of hang around and then let's
the other team implode. And we've seen that even happen
the last couple of weeks. We saw it against Cleveland,
saw it opening night against Chicago. Other coaches will screw
stuff up if you let them, and I thought the
Purdue coach last night screwed up a bunch of stuff
that allowed the Gophers to hang in and eventually steal
(06:07):
the game. That Purdue really outplayed them for big, big
stretches despite the turnovers. You just look at the stats.
You look at the rushing yards, you look at everything
that goes into winning, usually time of possession. Purdue had
the advantage in a lot of those statistics, but they
turned the ball over four times. Gophers turned it over once.
And then with their decision making, they allowed that door
(06:29):
to stay open and the Gophers, as I said, had
to walk through it, and they finally did in that
fourth quarter. Their first drive of the third, it was
an early drive of the third. Perdue has a fourth
and goal from the three. They're up four with nine
minutes to go in the third quarter. They choose to
kick a field goal to go up seven. No idea why,
I have no idea why they don't just hand it
off to one of their running backs and either let
(06:51):
him drag a couple of more Gophers or make a
couple of more Gophers miss and get into the end
zone and go up seven. And if you don't get it,
you're at the two yard line and the Gophers a
show no ability at that point that they were gonna
drive ninety eight yards for a touchdown. I don't understand
that one. I don't get it, but if you're a
Gopher fan, you take it. And then the way the
fourth quarter started, that jump started everything for Minnesota. I
(07:15):
have no idea what they were trying to do. The
first three plays of the fourth quarter they had driven
to the Gophers thirty two. You take a look at
the last couple of plays of the third quarter, Brown
with a pass for one yard. Mock could be eight
yard run. Mock could be three yard run, Singleton seven
yard run. Last play of the fourth quarter Singleton eighteen
(07:37):
yard game to the Minnesota thirty two. It's a first
down that was from midfield. You're in Gopher territory and
you just run the ball right down the Gophers' throats again.
So how do they start the fourth quarter? They keep
the backup quarterback in, he runs for two. He tries
a deep shot pass second and eight. No idea, Why
(07:57):
there's your incomplete pass on third and eight, because you
kind of have to. And then they miss a forty
seven yard field goal. If I'm a Purdue fan, I'm sick.
To my stomach about that stretch, because that's what kind
of got me going to think the Gophers have to
win this game. If Purdue's not going to take the
six or seven yards a carry that they're getting from
their running backs, if they're not going to take it,
(08:18):
you have to find a way to make them pay.
And to the Gophers credit, they did that with a
really long drive the next possession fourteen plays, seventy yards
and the touchdown that tied it at twenty. They took
advantage of a couple of face mass penalties. Again on
disciplined stuff. Sometimes you got to take the gifts. Sometimes
it's not going to be very clean, and they have
(08:39):
a lot to clean up, as we know with the
offensive line, with running the ball, with the mistackles defensively,
Sometimes you have to just find a way to survive
and get to the next one. And that fourth quarter
the Gophers did that and again rely on their playmakers,
Drake Lindsay, the young quarterback finding a way and his
last couple of dry and then obviously Coy Perrich with
(09:02):
the exclamation point, putting them up twenty seven to twenty,
a lead that they would not relinquish. What did you
think if you were there last night, or if you
watched hit to Brat Shawn Brian Cafe in text line
six four six eight six, I also want reviews on
the halftime show if you watched Chad Smith of the
Red Hot Chili Peppers. I did not get to see
much of it. I was checking in on my kids
(09:23):
who were at the game last night, so I didn't
get to see a ton of it. I was fired
up about it. I talked to Chad Smith on the
Golden Golpher podcast a few weeks ago to preview his appearance.
But it looked like it was awesome. People that saw
it last night that I kind of ran into after
the game and during that second half said it was
one of the coolest things they've seen. It looked badass.
If you were there, give me your review as well.
(09:43):
To the Brat Shawn Brian Cafe in text line six
four six' eight. Six but when we come, back we'll
talk to our Buddy Ryan, burns WHO i know has
a lot of thoughts on the. Game last. Night The
gophers with a seven point, victory WHICH i think covered
the spread by the. WAY i think it finished at
about seven or seven and a, half so it was
right on the right on The vegas. Line somehow that always.
Happens they get to win on homecoming to improve the
(10:04):
four and two and two and one in The Big.
Ten my favorite segment of the show is, Next Ryan

guy who can't wait for that night game because he
loves night games and he loves waiting all day For
(11:05):
Golden gopher football is our weekly guest in this spot
has been for. Years Ryan burns From Gopher illustrated dot,
com co host of The Gopher gridiron, podcast also one
of the three of us on The pair and a.
Spare you can follow him At Ryan BURNS mn On,
twitter and he's on The Kinetico Water systems. Hotline now
another red eye appearance for us Here, burnsey as WE i,
(11:27):
guess see each other in person and actually find a
way to get it, done unlike cal where we had
to do it in the middle of the, night where
this is a little bit more. Conventional but good, morning
how are you? Today i'm.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
WELL i don't know why you're so negative all the
time about these night.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
GAMES i was.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Able to go watch a five year old play soccer yesterday.
Speaker 1 (11:44):
Morning that's.
Speaker 2 (11:45):
Great these are the types of things that you get
to do with night. Games unlike your negativity over there In.
Speaker 1 (11:49):
Minnetonka these night games have given you the gift of, Time,
ryan which you need to. Appreciate you hate every night,
game you complain about, it you want you're just pining
for eleven. O'clock and, yeah this morning was a little,
dicey you know when you get home after midnight and,
then like you, say you can't just go to. BED
i watched the fourth quarter After it's not great all the,
time but it was a fun. Environment last night certainly
(12:12):
got more, fun even though a lot of people had
left the game by the time Coy perrich got the pick.
Six that kind of put the place on fire. Again
BUT i know you did the takeaway article at Goper
illustrated dot. Com people can read more in depth thoughts
on it. There BUT i don't know if you heard
my open or. Not but sometimes you have to take the.
Present sometimes you play really well and you win and
(12:33):
there's not a lot to. Discuss sometimes it's really choppy
waters and you need a little bit of help from
a team that's been providing help all season long to their.
Opponents AND i don't think you need to apologize for.
It you have to take advantage of. It and at
some point you just have to, say we have to
take this, game even though we're playing very. Poorly we
have to find a way to just take this. Game
and in the fourth quarter The gophers were able to do.
(12:55):
That what did you.
Speaker 2 (12:55):
See i've seen a lot of games At Huntington banks
SLASH Tcf Banks stadium in my. Time this is our
fifteenth year doing. This that was among the, strangest if
not the strangest Victory i've ever seen from The gophers
in that aspect where you were outplayed. Significantly in that,
Game you're out gained by almost two hundred, Yards you're
(13:18):
out rushed by over two hundred, yards but you found
a way to win and sometimes and you touched on
it in your open it's about finding ways not to
lose than it is about essentially seizing the opportunities at.
Hand and you look at how Did minnesota win this
game and why did they go fourteen to oho in
the fourth quarter to seal This they were the beneficiaries
(13:40):
some very untimely penalties From purdue that extended drives backed
themselves up in The minnesota red.
Speaker 3 (13:47):
Zone but you.
Speaker 2 (13:48):
Also look at the Take if it's WHY i have
been harping about it four, weeks is that coming into
last night's, game The gopher defense had only two defensive
takeaways in their last SEVEN fbs. Games depending upon how
you want to characterize the last, fumble the last play
of the, game they were plus four plus. Three that
is how they're able to win that. Game The Koy
(14:10):
parritch one was. Fantastic it's great to see the boy
From esco rebound that. Way but you also have even
Though Carrie brown's interception near the goal line didn't result
in points for the, offense it took it off the
board right, four one hundred and fifty six yards of
total offense For purdue twenty. Points it's timely takeaways is
(14:31):
essentially the name of the. Game Plus purdue has nine
penalties that it's them shooting themselves in the, foot and
you shouldn't apologize for that if You're. Minnesota very untimely,
penalties untimely. DROPS i texted you about this about two
am last, night AND i think we both. Agree perdue's
(14:52):
ability to get away from the run reminded me of
THE usc game last. Year and then AS i texted,
you The purdue offensive coordinator is from Where Justin.
Speaker 1 (15:03):
Well he came FROM. Usc he came FROM usc last,
year and there must be something about going into the
student section that people are afraid to just run the
ball because that was going that was the same way,
Right that was the same direction as last year when AND, i,
LIKE i stood there AND i said it in my open,
BURNSEY i said it on the. RADIO i, said, guys
we have to be blunt about. This purdue is Handing
(15:25):
minnesota the opportunity to steal this, game and the game
that they don't have a ton of business winning because
of how poorly they've. Played you have to find a
way to just take this, gift and then the gifts kept.
Coming it was like they because of the two face,
masks Right, like it wasn't like they just went and
march down the. Field you, Know drake was good when
he needed to. Be the fourth and two was obviously
(15:45):
a huge. Play he had a third down pass To
Jalen smith that was, Good the one To tracy was.
Great and, there's by the way pressure if you go
watch it, back like there's a couple of times where
he can't really step into those. Throws he's just got
to find it and sling. It but the gifts just
kept on coming and, coming and and sometimes it be that,
Way burnsy.
Speaker 2 (16:03):
As the kids would say it really do it would
do be that, way and you shouldn't apologize for. That
AND i feel like we're going to continue to harp
on that. Is i've just seen so Many gopher games
where you look up at the end and they played,
well they played more than well enough to, win and
they lose this. One they played more you, know as
poor As i've seen them play and win a football.
(16:24):
Game it's okay to have the ball bounce to your
way once in a. While, again we've covered this team
for a very long, time so to see them have
two different face mask penalties extend. DRIVES i also say
this on The Drake lindsay scramble on fourth and. Two
as a fellow six foot, four probably two hundred and
forty pounds, INDIVIDUAL i can assure You Drake lindsay in
(16:47):
his life.
Speaker 3 (16:47):
Has not won many foot. RACES i KNOW i. Haven't
last TIME i. DID i ran into a surfboard at my.
Speaker 1 (16:53):
WEDDING i was going to say the night before your. Wedding,
Yeah but his ability to provised there where the play wasn't.
Speaker 3 (17:02):
There purdue had it scouted.
Speaker 2 (17:04):
Well he hits him with the pump fake or just
the fake, Pitch i'm not sure what you want to call,
it but it freezes the prdue guy enough to allow
him to get two yards to get the corner to
extend the, drive untimely penalties and they find the. Touchdown
koy makes his, PLAY i mean or even Jayon tay
McMillan on fourth and, Goal Danny collins sends six guys,
(17:26):
saying if you're gonna beat, me you're gonna beat me with.
Pressure which if that's the WAY i want to go,
down that's the WAY i want to go.
Speaker 3 (17:31):
Down you made the plays in the fourth.
Speaker 2 (17:34):
Quarter they gave you every opportunity to take that, game
and finally in the fourth quarter you seized.
Speaker 1 (17:40):
It so good for. You Ryan burns gop For illustrated Dot,
com joining us here On go For Football, Sunday barrero
Next Sunday sermons at Nine hit The batch On Brian
kafan text one six four six eighty six with questions For.
Burnsy all, right so let's talk about some of those
issues right that put The gophers in this. Position LET'S
i could do toss up BECAUSE i know you have
thoughts on, both but let's start with the off and
(18:01):
the fact That Darius taylor's first run or only run
of the third, quarter was the first play of the third,
quarter and then they essentially just punted and threw the
ball like fifty straight. TIMES i don't blame them because
they could not run the ball at. All how many
times Did Darius taylor either run into A purdue Boiler
(18:21):
maker or one of his own guys in the? Backfield
he had nowhere to go and that's a big. Problem
and you've talked about the offensive line for a couple
of weeks, now that they reshuffled some stuff Before Ohio.
State they still don't know exactly what they're doing, there
and it makes it really hard to win a game
when you can't run the ball at, All, Burnty so
what do they need to? Fix what needs to?
Speaker 2 (18:41):
HAPPEN i would just love to see someone else play
because they continue to shuffle the same five guys. Around
they've played three different offensive line combinations now in the
last three. GAMES i just don't know what needs to
happen for some bodies to be changed, out because that's
to me the crux of this. Issue now you've got
(19:03):
six games worth of data and your two transfers at
right and left guard or a big. PROBLEM i looked
at The Pro Football focus statistics this morning And Darius
taylor thirty two rushing yards, yesterday thirty eight of those
were after. Contact so you're thinking yourself that the math
doesn't math, there and JUSTIN i know your E dinah
(19:24):
education may tell you that My tartan education would agree with.
Speaker 3 (19:27):
You that's how hard he had to.
Speaker 2 (19:30):
Work AND i think the crux of it comes down
to is The Minnesota Moving company is the least physical
offensive LINE i Think i've seen in The fleck, era
and now we've got six games worth of data that
even With Darius taylor, back AND i think we all
Agree Darius, taylor now, healthy is an All big ten caliber,
back but even he can't make magic happen if every
(19:53):
time he takes the handoff there's someone in his face
three yards into the. Backfield so my plea is, this
AND i wrote about it yesterday And goph. ILLUSTRATED i
don't care who you want to see instead Of Marcellus
marshall And Dylan. Ray, Specifically Marcellus, marshall according To Pro Football,
focus has allowed the most, pressures, hurries and quarterback hits
(20:14):
of Any big ten guard this. Season, YEAH i mean
that's you got six games worth of data and he's
out of eligibility in seven games. Hopefully if you make
a bowl, game if you want to see the pride
Of Tracy minnesota And Tony nelson who came in in
The Ohio state, Game i'm for. It if you want
to see The washington transfer khalide to, Five i'm for.
Speaker 3 (20:33):
IT i don't care who it.
Speaker 2 (20:34):
IS i just know that this specific five is not the,
answer and it's not as simple.
Speaker 3 (20:42):
As just the. Players we talk about it each week On.
Speaker 2 (20:45):
Parentis Baron fleck loves to say, this So i'm going
to use his words here for.
Speaker 3 (20:49):
Him is it, coaching is it, personnel or is it?
Speaker 1 (20:52):
Scheme?
Speaker 2 (20:53):
Now the answer is all of. Them but what percentage
you want to put in The gopher offensive line talent
versus the offensive line Coach Brian callahan's coaching versus offensive
Coordinator Greg harbo's, SCHEME.
Speaker 3 (21:06):
I think is certainly.
Speaker 2 (21:07):
DEBATABLE i would just say that if you continue to
trot out different offensive line, combinations that to me signals.
Speaker 3 (21:15):
That the staff at least believes that it's the.
Speaker 2 (21:17):
Personnel probably with the most percentage wise of those, THREE
i just it's it's time after time. Now where it
starts with the offensive line for This minnesota offense Is
Drake lindsay was under pressure eighteen times last. Night that's
a new season, high.
Speaker 3 (21:36):
Right and this is.
Speaker 2 (21:37):
A purdue team that is not a world. Beater you
all saw it last. Night it's only going to get
more difficult starting On friday when a five and One
nebraska team comes to. Town i'm just pleading up, front
try some new bodies out there Next friday.
Speaker 1 (21:51):
Night, Yeah and we'll see if they do, it because
it is funny even deep into the second, half they're
still doing play action, too, right like they're doing fake
Hand LIKE i think we should just give up the ghost.
Here you. Know they, now to their, credit they did
just say we can't do. It we have to find another.
Way obviously The Darius taylor's screen in the first, half
that was. Great that was very well. Timed they tried
(22:14):
to go back to it a couple of different times.
There it's just so hard burns you when they know,
that you know that you can't run and you have
to find another way to somehow move the. Ball and
that's where it's shocking to, see right because we've NEVER i,
know there's been times where they haven't run the ball very,
well including last. Year, right it was we're just gonna
(22:36):
Let Max brosmer throw it to set everything. Up but
they kind of they should have the same theory this
year and that they have a quarterback that's been able
to move them through the, air they should be able
to throw to run and they just haven't been able
to do it at.
Speaker 2 (22:47):
All, well that's the other part of the throw to
run IS i know you can't run, it but last
night you look at the statistics and The gopher receivers
lacked physicality as. WELL i, mean you look At Pro
Football focus once, again there were thirteen contested catch opportunities For.
Minnesota they converted one one of. Thirteen so if you're
(23:09):
not getting, separation you're not making contested, catches you're struggling
to protect your. Quarterback other than, that the play was.
Outstanding Missus, lincoln thank you for. Coming It's Drake lindsay
can't do it, all and he wasn't perfect last.
Speaker 1 (23:22):
Night.
Speaker 2 (23:22):
CERTAINLY i think that he was sped up from the
opening couple of series when he's getting pressure in his,
face AND i don't blame. Him it's just someone has
to start to step up and play with. Physicality this
is A Big ten conference and the physicality from the
offensive line to the receivers needs to start to show
(23:43):
up here in the back half of the schedule if
The gophers are going to continue to win.
Speaker 1 (23:46):
GAMES i assume you've looked at this because you've been
At Pro Football focus all. MORNING i don't even know
if you. Slept the Mistackle number one that you have
talked a lot about the last few weeks Obviously Ohio state's.
Won you, know cal they had a bunch of mistackles
as well, well even Against, rutgers a lot of miss.
Tackles we saw it again last, Night. Burnsy and that's another.
Thing is it, personnel is its? Scheme is it just player?
(24:07):
EXECUTION a ton of misstackles, again where a two yard
run turns into an eight yard. Run and, maccabee by the,
way we've all seen him against The, gophers he kills.
Him he's a physical guy and he'll drag a guy
four or five yards even if you do wrap him
up with good technique and. Everything but a lot of
times where those running backs were just shedding gophers or
(24:30):
just leaving gophers behind. Them so what do they do about?
That because that's a trend as.
Speaker 2 (24:35):
Well, yeah Anytime devin mock could be plays The, gophers
he turns Into Mike. AlScott And i'm glad to now
know THAT i don't have to Watch Devin mockaby run
up and down the field with The Golden gophers one more,
time because this is the.
Speaker 3 (24:49):
Final year for Mister.
Speaker 2 (24:50):
Mockaby you look at the mistackle number thirteen more in this,
game they lost the mistackle battle which is part OF
pj flex seventy eight percent number that brings them up
to fifty eight.
Speaker 3 (25:02):
Missed tackles in the last four.
Speaker 2 (25:03):
Games and you watch it back on tape and folks
can go read about it on the gift rewind that'll
be up in a couple hours here And gopher illustrated
guys are in the right position to make. Plays they're
just not making, plays which is how your defense is
on the field for eighty eight plays last, night and
you had no sacks on forty Six Ryan brown, dropbacks
(25:26):
you had two tackles for. Loss guys are in and
around the football and they're just not making. Plays it
even comes back down to the takeaway issue where we
talked about for such a long time ON Parenti spear
or defensive Coordinator Danny. Collins then the head COACH. Pj
fleck are screaming catch the ones they throw to. You
(25:49):
there was ONE i think it right at the end
of the first quarter Where minnesota gets Pressure John nester
looks like he has a pick on The gopher.
Speaker 3 (25:56):
Sideline he just gets it ripped away from.
Speaker 2 (25:59):
HIM i, mean or even one of the touchdowns where
it's third and, Twelve Ryan brown escapes the pocket because
The gopher pass rush doesn't close him, in and then
he scrambles to the. Pylon instead of a, sack it's a.
Touchdown it's these little, things and that's the. Thing that's
the funny thing about this game is the margins are so,
thin and the ability to Encapsulate Ryan brown last night
(26:24):
was not. There guys are in spots to make, plays
they're just not making enough plays when the opportunities present. Themselves,
specifically to, me it comes down to the defensive. LINE i,
mean they had twenty one pressures last night On Ryan
brown and no. Sacks that to me is the little
fine details that, also to, ME i need to see more,
(26:45):
physicality And i'm tired of already talking about it this.
Speaker 3 (26:48):
Week is the lack of physicality.
Speaker 2 (26:51):
Between minnesota And purdue bears out in the, statistics especially
in the run. Game purdue is not a good running,
offense and they ran for two hundred in fifty something
yards last.
Speaker 3 (27:01):
Night physicality up.
Speaker 2 (27:03):
Front needs to be found here very very.
Speaker 1 (27:05):
Soon on the, PRESSURES i THINK i Heard grim say
during the broadcast That purdue has allowed ELEVEN sat had
a lot of eleven sacks going into that, game which
isn't a very high, number, right especially for how often
that they throw they lead to big ten and. Dropbacks
as you've pointed out a million. Times it was, crazy,
(27:25):
though to see guys seemingly all Around Ryan brown multiple
times like And i'm on the, Field so YOU i
can always hear the anticipation from the coaches or from the,
players because a lot of times they know what's, called
and they know what's, coming and they know what they're looking.
For so whether it's a deep shot or it's a
screen on, offense or it's a we've called this, pressure
(27:46):
let's see if it, WORKS i can always hear. It
so it's like this crescendo of like there you just get, oh,
oh he's got. Right so but they did a better
JOB i thought in the second half pretty had three,
points and some of that was self. Inflicted we're going
to talk about. That BUT i thought they did a
better job of kind of keeping him in there in
(28:08):
the second Half, burnsy where maybe they weren't even just
all out, pressuring they were just kind of keeping him
in that pocket but making him feel the pressure because
his ACCURACY i thought dropped in the second half and
he obviously didn't scramble as well as he did in
the first half when he killed him a couple of.
Times so did you see anything different in the second
half that way that they were able to at least
(28:29):
keep him in there and not let him ruin the.
Speaker 2 (28:31):
GAME i think their pass rush lanes. Improved, now what's
pass rush? Lane i'd say your defensive ends don't get
too far up the field to allow the quarterback to
scramble out in your defensive. Tackles if they're not getting,
pressure they can just get their eyes in the. Quarterback
the goal would be to keep him contained in the,
pocket AND i thought they did a much better job
of that in the second. Half BUT i also say
(28:53):
the best go for defense last night was waiting For
purdue to drop it pass or step out of bounds
and come back in to try and get a pass
or have an untimely, penalty whether it's a holding, call
whatever that may. Be and once again they shouldn't apologize for.
That football is a very funny, game and it can
be very humbling in that, way and it's not always
(29:14):
about going out and making the. Play it's also watching
your opponent implode from time to, time and also an
offensive coordinator, SAY i know we're running the ball for
over two hundred and fifty. YARDS i know we're averaging
over six yards of, carry but you know what we
need to do to do? This, yeah we need to throw.
It we really need to get this thing. Going i'm
(29:35):
tired of watching the clock run.
Speaker 1 (29:37):
Off.
Speaker 3 (29:38):
Yeah it just a mind.
Speaker 2 (29:39):
Boggling Type you mentioned it in the, opening AND i
CAN'T i cannot stress how MUCH i agree with you
for whatever you feel today about This gopher. Victory and
you should feel, joy and that is it's okay to feel.
Speaker 1 (29:51):
That.
Speaker 2 (29:51):
Yep imagine being A purdue fan today when you look
up at the end of the day and you look
at the amount of opportunities that you had to win
that game by seventeen points and.
Speaker 3 (30:02):
You lost by.
Speaker 2 (30:03):
Seven that would Be that's going to be one That
i'm sure many A boilermaker fan is scratching their head.
Speaker 1 (30:09):
About at the end of the. Season you talk to
a lot of, Coaches you've been around a lot of.
COACHES i can't figure it, out Burns, ey AND i
think that's WHY i said it last night on the,
broadcast which is not Something i've typically. Said The gophers
have no excuse but to win this, game like putting
it out there and saying this is, Ridiculous LIKE i
was offended as, like AND i was saying to some,
(30:32):
people say whatever you want ABOUT, pj and you AND
i are both, fans at LEAST i KNOW i, Am
and it's, like you're never going to leave a game.
Going it's a SHAME pj didn't work the clock enough
in the fourth quarter to find a way to get
it out, Right like he's just say what you want.
ABOUT i know people don't like certain play calls in his,
style and it is the two conservative at. TIMES i,
(30:54):
mean he threw it like sixty times last, night so
obviously he's not too. Stubborn But I'm i'm just standing,
there AND i was just. Befuddled when you have your
backup quarterback who's also a really good, runner chucking the
ball down the field on second down to start the fourth,
Quarter it's, like what are you? Doing do you just
want to feel good that you have a knockout punch
(31:15):
there after you didn't do the knockout punch on the
fourth and two where you kick a field. GOAL i
don't know how you feel about. That. Decision But you're exactly.
Right If i'm A purdue, FAN i wouldn't have slept
last night IF i was a Hardcore purdue fan because
they just continued to hand it To. Minnesota AND i
don't get my coaches do. That And i'm always pro, Coach,
(31:35):
Like i'm always pro, Coach Brett blakemore can hop on
and Say i'm always pro. Coach I'm I'm i've been
Defending Luke fickel all, season right like And James. Franklin
And James, Franklin i've been defending him. Too it's getting,
harder But i'm, Like i'm standing, there going in what
world does that make any? Sense the three plays before
the fourth, Quarter, Burnsy i'll pull up The i'll pull
(31:56):
up the play by. Play you're laugh expect.
Speaker 2 (31:58):
To hear you Defending Luke fickle at this, stage Nor James.
Franklin but we.
Speaker 3 (32:02):
Can get to that.
Speaker 1 (32:02):
Later it's a tough. Island it is a tough. Island
BUT i mean their last four plays before the last three,
plays four plays before the fourth quarter eight yard, run
three yard, run seven yard, run eighteen yard. Run so
what are we gonna? Do we're gonna run for two
yards second and, eight and then we're gonna we're gonna
throw a deep, shot and then it's gonna be third and,
eight and then we're gonna miss a field. Goal and
(32:24):
it's Like i've never said WHAT i said last night,
ever where The gophers have no. Excuse they have to
find a way to win this, game because that's How gift.
TRAPPED i felt it was at that, point and their,
credit they were able to do. It but If i'm
A purdue, fan, MAN i just what did you think
of the field? Goal what did you think of going
for the field goal and fourth and two to make
it a seven point game as opposed to just trying
(32:46):
to get back to double.
Speaker 2 (32:47):
Digits it's not SOMETHING i would have, done But i'm
not a multi million dollar head coach who is paid
to make those. Decisions, YEAH i think with the way
you were running the football and the way you were
essentially dominating the line of, Scrimmage i'd play to win
the game as a seven point road favorite and someone
who's on a three game losing streak and go for
a knockout. Blow But barry otom they Knew purdue head
(33:12):
coach had some other thoughts and feelings about, that or
even you look at their produce drive that ends up
ending in a turnover by, downs they get into a
first and, goal they run it and then they throw
it four straight. Times, right just get out of your
own way and see what you're. Doing it's just sometimes
(33:35):
the pride is certainly there for a lot of these
coaches and they're not willing to. Adapt AND i think
last night was a prime example where if you're A boilermaker,
fan you're talking about your offensive Coordinator Josh henson and,
saying we ran for two hundred and fifty yards and
in the game's most crucial, moments we were doing what
throwing the?
Speaker 3 (33:55):
Football just some high, level high level. Stuff some would, say.
Speaker 1 (34:01):
Why was last night The Koy parritch? Night we've been
waiting for, that, Right probably no one more than him
was waiting for that exclamation. Plany that was a hell
of a. CATCH i didn't see it. Live be that
difficult of a catch or that difficult of a. Play
that's some pretty high level stuff from the kid From. Mesco,
yeah when they needed.
Speaker 2 (34:20):
Him he gets his first career, touchdown AND i think
someone's children might have hypothetically called that pick six is
from WHAT i was told in a pre production meeting
edition Of Gopher Football, Sunday SO i think they donuts
and whatever else here this.
Speaker 3 (34:36):
Morning, yet for all of the highs.
Speaker 2 (34:40):
And lows that have Been koy parrots this, season the
col game being the low, point for him to at
home in the fourth quarter of A big ten, game
get his eyes on the quarterback and catch a, fastball
because that was a. Fastball that thing was coming out.
Hot it was supposed to be AN rpo. Slant catching
it and housing. It the power of takeaways is the
(35:02):
THING i will just continue to. Say and FOR koi
to get his first interception of the season in the
fourth quarter of A big ten game to the biggest
win probability swing of that entire game is the boy
From esco catching, it running, it getting into the end.
Zone for all of the trials and tribulations he's been
through to the first now half of the, season for
(35:22):
him to now hit the halfway part on a high,
note that should be some pretty good news Because minnesota
needs some good news on that back.
Speaker 1 (35:30):
End last couple of minutes With Ryan burns go For
illustrated Dot com so you get to watch a lot
more of the window before The gophers. Game as you,
know out On Oak, street you're watching more games in
the press, box and you know you're doing your recruiting
stuff and all of. That but what were the headlines
of the rest of the day in The Big ten for?
Speaker 2 (35:51):
You Does James franklin get a pink slip before the
end of the day.
Speaker 3 (35:58):
Or does that wait, until uh, say the end Of.
Monday forty nine million dollar?
Speaker 1 (36:03):
Buyout is that the?
Speaker 2 (36:04):
Number it's hypothetically somewhere around there. Now state laws protect the.
Contracts we learned that this week out In, pennsylvania so
we don't know the. NUMBER i think it's forty six
forty nine. MILLION i wouldn't be surprised to say That
James franklin And Penn state negotiate that down to, say
a more reasonable number. Potentially AND i don't know why
(36:24):
you would want to do that if you have a
forty six to forty nine million dollar golden. PARACHUTE i
KNOW i certainly wouldn't do. That, Yeah but oh to
three and The big ten For Penn, State AND i
THINK i can say this pretty. CONFIDENTLY i haven't seen
a team take a loss worse than What Penn state
did To, oregon they give everything that they have get
(36:45):
in an overtime they end up. Losing and then to
go To ucla and lose to An oho to FOR
ucla team, who by the, way is now apparently white
hot Behind Jerry, Neuheisel, right if they go into the
Fighting Joe, ross he's a Beast lansing and win that game.
Easily but to then have A northwestern, team Which I'll
i'll be honest and, SAY i don't think that team's
(37:06):
particularly good at home and from the opening kick your
flat for another sixty minutes with the and we're talking
about with the best that money can. Buy coordinator, Wise
Ohio state's defensive coordinator was poached, Right Jim knowles Two
Penn state because he got way more. Money and this
(37:27):
is a team that was in The College football The
playoff semi finals last. Year they were a great. Team
but the way that they have just gone pear shape
is something to.
Speaker 3 (37:39):
Behold and then Even Brett's Brett's, badgers that was.
Speaker 2 (37:43):
Tough DO i get to tell, you Is luke Fickle
goeta ask them to do that many pushups after losing
thirty what is? It thirty seven and nothing last night The. Iowahawkeys,
yeah that was. TOUGH i saw a stat line Where
iowa was up twenty or twenty three to, nothing And,
markowski The iowa, quarterback is five of ten for like
thirty yards and a pick and it didn't.
Speaker 3 (38:05):
Matter it's.
Speaker 2 (38:06):
Right and now for The, badgers that's the question Is
Luke fickle HAS i believe somewhere around a twenty twenty
five million dollar. Buyout and now you Get Ohio state And,
oregon who are two of the best three teams in the.
Speaker 3 (38:18):
Country oh my, goodness what is the light at the
end of the?
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Tunnel what is the identity of The Wisconsin? Badgers BECAUSE
i know what it's. Not it's it's it's a defense
that's now worn. Down it's an offense that can't get do.
Anything they're stuck in neutral AND i know they've had
some injuries at quarterback and along their offensive. Line but
when you have your athletic director just a few weeks
(38:41):
ago telling The badger faithful that they're, SPOILED i think
the direct quote was spoiled. ROTTEN i wonder what type
reskins he was saying after a rivalry game that they
put everything on the line for and they got their
face smashed.
Speaker 3 (38:56):
In i'll tell you, what high. School brett's not going
to school On. Monday i'll tell you.
Speaker 1 (39:00):
That no. CHANCE i love high. School, brett who lives In,
iowa is not going to go to school because of
A wisconsin. Game i'm sure that would have gone over
well with all your. Classmates that's all The hawkeye.
Speaker 3 (39:12):
Fans, Yeah i'm not going for.
Speaker 1 (39:13):
That, No, yeah they would have loved. It how About? Indiana,
YEAH i said it on The fox pre game show.
YESTERDAY i, said the thing people don't talk about is
like their physical. Bunch you want to talk about physical
like they they have good line, play like they they're
not a just high powered, offense throw it up and
down the field all the, time right like they were
(39:34):
like they they played smash mouth, too like on both.
Sides and that's an impressive. Victory. Man and There their
schedule is pretty much cake now the rest of the.
Way they're going to be back in the. Playoffs bernsy
back to back. Years The Indiana. Hoosiers it's, crazy.
Speaker 2 (39:52):
Yeah that that is a team that has embraced the
personality of their head, coach unlike actually any other team
of college football has Where Kirk signetti gets The indiana,
job and it's talking about as opening, PRESSER i win
google me. RIGHT i mean they're a cocky, bunch but
they're a physical bunch and if you punch them in the, mouth,
(40:13):
well guess What they're going to hit you right. Back
and that's what we've learned about the Fighting. Signettes And
i'm Sure dan will have some thoughts about his favorite
or his alma. Mater, yeah to go Into oregon and
play with them step for step and then ultimately end
up winning that football. Game they are going to be
a college football playoff team for back to back. Seasons
(40:35):
it's going to Be Ohio, State, oregon and Now. Indiana
then we'll see what teams Like illinois among others can.
Speaker 3 (40:41):
Do, yeah we'll.
Speaker 2 (40:43):
See how many More Jerry neuheisel in that Flow. Sunshine
sunshine's got that thing going right now IN. UCLA i
will say, This i'll be very curious if and When
Penn state moves.
Speaker 3 (40:54):
ON i don't know how much money they. GOT i
don't know what that's going to end up.
Speaker 2 (40:59):
ENTAILING i can just tell you The Penn state athletic
director graduated From Indiana. Bloomington and where Is Kirk signetti.
From he's From, pennsylvania.
Speaker 1 (41:11):
Exactly the one place you're right that he MIGHT i.
Speaker 2 (41:14):
Know the counter argument and, is, well, Well, ryan he's
already winning At. Indiana, yeah he's winning At indiana and
he has to work twice as hard if he can
then potentially just go to Penn state and with all those,
resources and he's A pennsylvania.
Speaker 3 (41:27):
Native we've got a lot.
Speaker 2 (41:29):
Of time to talk about that over the next two something.
Months BUT i love to see the parody across college.
Football that's the other takeaway from yesterday IS i think
The Big ten specifically there's going to be there's top
three or four, teams but the parody between team five and.
Eighteen now you look AT i would say team seventeen and, eighteen,
(41:51):
Well wisconsin is probably at that bottom spot, now but
The UCLA's and The. Northwesterns northwestern just went Into Happy
valley in One ucla WAS zho and. Four now they've
reeled off back to Back Big ten. Wins parody is
a parent throughout college, football AND i think we need
to embrace.
Speaker 1 (42:07):
That thank, you Burns, ey great. Stuff as, Always, buddy
we'll talk to you On tuesday for parent.
Speaker 3 (42:11):
Aspair all, right appreciate.
Speaker 1 (42:12):
You He's Ryan burns From Gopher illustrated Dot. Com final
segment of the, show when we come back and, Well
bernsy AND i did What Barry oldham refused to, do
run out the clock and win the. Game we went
a little long, there and that means we're gonna hand it.
Off no pun intended To Dan barrero right, Now Gophers
Nebraska friday, night right here on the Fan sunday sermons.
(42:35):
Next have a Good, sunday, everybody
