plus five hundred dollars in game day cash. Register for
your chance to win the day on the kfan contest page.
That's KFN dot com slash furnace enter today critical.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
Do you think that game will be tenderly? That's the
last game of the season. Is that correct regular season
game or not? It's early January, it.
Speaker 1 (00:31):
Must be right, Yes, that would be the last game
of the year.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
Do you think that. Do you think both teams will
be well have safely secured a playoff spot prior to that,
or do you think that might be one of those
got a win to get in, win and get in.
Speaker 1 (00:48):
I think it might be a winning a win to
get in.
Speaker 2 (00:50):
It might be a win to get in kind of
a game. You know, when earlier we were talking about
this would be the second time Joe fly has played
against the Green Bay Packers. This this is because when
he was quarterbacking with Cleveland, they actually won the game.
The Browns beat the Packers, Flacco gets traded to the Bengals.
(01:11):
There are those I think you even expressed some maybe
some surprises to what's the point. And I think for me,
the only thing I can think of, no, this is
I'm not saying this is logical or this is realistic,
but I mentioned it. I don't think if if you're
if you're going to trade for a veteran quarterback, you
may as well get a guy there's it's not going
to take him long.
Speaker 1 (01:32):
I don't have problem with them doing at all.
Speaker 2 (01:33):
Oh, I thought you said you did.
Speaker 1 (01:35):
I thought you know, you were just making the comment
about why they were favored by fourteen. I'm like, well,
you know, Joe Flacco is like not the greatest quarterback?
Is he an upgrade over Jake Browning? Yes? Did you
have to give up basically nothing to get them? Yeah?
So yeah, I would have made the move.
Speaker 2 (01:49):
Oh, I thought you were surprised.
Speaker 1 (01:50):
By Actually I would have been Jameis Winston.
Speaker 3 (01:53):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (01:53):
Well, I'm just going to get to my point though. Okay,
sorry I misinterpreted what you said. It sounded like you
were surprised he can pick up an offense instantly. You say,
it's not like it's going to be like he after
years have to you know, stay up late at night
to figure it out. Second of all, as I'd mentioned,
he's throwing to one of the best wide receiver tandems
in all of football. Yeah, and maybe most important is
(02:16):
they're still in the thicke of things. I mean, the
Ravens are one and three. They're a terrible team in
a terrible city with terrible fans, are a terrible stadium.
The Browns are the Browns. The Steelers are three and one,
but the Bengals are two and three and so and again,
the Steelers haven't done anything that leads me to believe that. Man,
(02:38):
they're just going to keep winning more. The way it's going,
they'll probably win the division. But I think if you,
if you're Cincinnati, you can't give up on the season yet.
Just like you know, there are those when you and
I have been discussing if even after McCarthy is one
(02:59):
hundred percent, do you insert him right away in the lineup,
regardless of how the Vikings are doing as a team,
and then how Wentz is doing individually? You know, I
think you and I both. I think I again, maybe
I put words in your mouth again. If Wenz continues
to win and plays as well as he has, I
just keep playing him until the wheels fall.
Speaker 1 (03:18):
Off.
Speaker 2 (03:20):
That's what I would do. And I know we all
want to see McCarthy and this and that the other thing.
So my point is because because I don't get it,
but others have texted us and saying, we're already know
this team and't go over the big games we got
to see with what we got with teams, don't think
that way that are still in the hunt, right, especially
when you're three and two. Yeah, and even with the
(03:43):
Bengals at two and three, they're only you know, a
game and a half behind the Steelers. And like I said,
with the Ravens and the Browns being the Ravens and
where the Ravens are right now where the Browns so, well,
you can't give up on it, particularly when it looks
like Burrow could be back in late December, back in
sixty three, so he might come back, and that would
(04:04):
be a case where, unless Flacco is having a career year,
you would replace Joe Flacco with Joe Burrow. Yes, I
think that's one where you would Burrow. Yes, you have Burrow.
He's that good.
Speaker 1 (04:16):
So the Bengals right now in the AFC are eighth place,
seven go to the playoffs.
Speaker 2 (04:22):
Yeah, so there you go and they have a losing
record right now. Three.
Speaker 1 (04:25):
Yeah, if you can somehow hang around five hundred until
Burrow gets back later in the year and maybe you
go in a late late December run and get it in
the postseason. There's a lot of teams THEFC that wouldn't
want to see Joe Burrow in a playoff game.
Speaker 2 (04:38):
You are correct. We looked at NFL power rankings yesterday
from the Athletic and what athletic?
Speaker 1 (04:50):
What's that?
Speaker 3 (04:52):
Really?
Speaker 2 (04:52):
You don't know. It's somebody that's really good at whatever
sport they choose to do. They're in good shape. The
Athletic is online sports newspaper where they created I think
the New York Times actually bought the Athletic for a
boatload of money, if I'm not mistaken, And the Athletic
(05:16):
cherry picked who they thought were the best writers pretty
much in every major metropolitan area, gave him probably gave
him a nice significant race, and said, we want you
to cover the local teams, and so they did up
power rankings. They had the Lions as the number one
team in the National Football League, won four in a
(05:38):
row after losing in Green Bay to start the season,
And if I'm not mistaken. The Packers were top ten
in the vikings. I think weighed in as the best
of the lousiest and the lousiest of the best. At sixteen.
CBS Sports agrees with the Lions as the best team
in football. They go from number two last week to
(05:59):
number one, a best team in pro football, followed by
the Eagles at two, Bills at three, the Buccaneers at four.
In the cold Set five they have the Packers at seven,
above two other four and one teams, the Jaguars and
the forty nine ers. How do you? How do you?
Speaker 3 (06:19):
You know?
Speaker 2 (06:19):
And again, power rankings are subjective and we always have
the you know, we overreact or underreact every week. And
I like the Packers, well, no, I dislike the Packers,
but just as a team and how they're playing, I
think I like what they're doing and I like that
the makeup of their club. I just don't know if
I put them over the Jaguars are they were mighty impressive.
(06:40):
The other the very impressive, very impressive, and so I
just don't know if I would. Maybe maybe CBS Sports
needs to see a little bit more before they believe,
But I you know, Packers at number seven would.
Speaker 1 (06:50):
You have, Well, a lot of this is still left
over from preseason predictions, right, like you said, India was
at five.
Speaker 2 (06:57):
Yeah, they have the cold set. No, they have the
cold set.
Speaker 1 (06:59):
Six six Steelers. You could argue the Culture the best
team in football, right you could. Now, I know their
schedule hasn't been overly tough, but they do have a
quality win against the Denver Broncos within that win stretch wins.
And while while they haven't had a challenging schedule, they've
been whooping up on that schedule. Yes, I mean, they
beat the beat the Dolphins by twenty five points, they
(07:20):
beat the Titans by twenty one, They just beat the
Raiders by thirty four, So it's not like they're just
skimming by on the hairs of their chiny chin chin
against these bad teams. And then, like I said, they've
got a very good win against the Broncos in there. So,
but we went into the season going the Indianapolis Culture
are not a playoff team, So it's almost like it
takes longer for those types of teams to get the
respect from the power ranking rankers.
Speaker 2 (07:45):
The hero of that says, please tell me who Detroit
is beaten? The GD team they played lost. Now the
the GD team, they low. The injuries are stacking. They
do have some injuries on defense. They they haven't beat
very good teams, but they're beating those teams rather handily.
(08:05):
So they're they're.
Speaker 1 (08:08):
Now when they played Baltimore, they still had Lamar Jackson,
did they Yeah, So I know the Ravens are one
and four, and people think they're terrible all of a sudden.
If Lamar Jackson's playing, that's a good team.
Speaker 2 (08:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 1 (08:17):
And they regardless of how bad their defense is.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
That's correct. And they and you know, if you remember,
they open the season, as you say, with a one
point loss to Buffalo's considered one of the best teams
in the league.
Speaker 1 (08:27):
So I I in Chicago's two and two. Yeah, and
they smoked them. Yeah, And they smoked the Browns while
the Vikings and Packers both struggled at the Browns exactly.
Speaker 2 (08:36):
Yeah. So I again, I understand why, you know, you
look at strength of schedule and such like that, and
we'll see, we'll see what happens on Sunday night when
they take on Kansas City. I'm not even suggesting that
Detroit is the best team in pro football. You know,
once a Lions fan, always a doubting Lions fans. That's
that's what we do. But the Vikings are at seventeen,
(08:58):
right below your other big game pick. They have the
Chiefs at sixteen and the and they're in the Vikings
at seventeen. Let's see if they and I don't think
they actually have. Yeah, they they have a quick couple
of sentences, and here's what it says about the Vikings.
Rallying to beat the Browns and get a split of
(09:18):
the over of their two overseas games was big for
this team. They now headed there by JJ McCarthy should
be back at quarterback when they play the Eagles in
two weeks. So they are convinced, at least at CBA,
they say should be. They're expecting McCarthy to get the start.
And you and I have been discussing this ten Tobe,
(09:40):
and I'm starting to believe. I thought they would ride
with Wins for a while, and they still could. They
still might, but I just I don't know what to
call my gad full eyes sense tingling, but just right,
some of the things the coach has said about you
know this, watching Wins for the past couple of games,
going through the progressions, getting rid of the balls. But
good for him. We're going to get him some work.
(10:00):
We're gonna get him back. You know, I think I
think they're planning to play because he's the quarterback whisper.
And don't just take it from me. A former Viking
basically said that do you have that sound?
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Can we get that on the air? You sent it
to me earlier? Yeah, wait, I can get that.
Speaker 2 (10:17):
Yes, yeah, a former Viking because basically calling Kevin O'Connell
a quarterback whisper, Well, we'll listen to that sound. By
the other side of the break, here are the Common
Man program on the Fan. Oh by the way, Timby's
got a keyword for the National Cash Contest.
Speaker 1 (10:33):
The Fan and two men in the junk truck want

their National Cash Contest. After the keyword, check at kfan

Speaker 2 (11:20):
The comedy event of the century is what it could be.
Speaking of comedy events. But before the grum is over,
I have another pair of tickets to give away to
the Petty Theft Tour. Just a couple of pickpockets, Meat,
Sauce and common Man along with Larry Mandela Guy will
be at Max's on the Green and Spice or Saturday Night.
(11:41):
That's this coming Saturday. A ticket's available at event Bright
Larry Mondello, Guy will MC, followed by Sauce and then
myself and we're looking forward to it. They've got plain
State packers are.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
There, what sauce. They shouldn't be called the event dumb.
You know that text messager said that you're probably you.
Speaker 2 (11:59):
Have a quick you should be on flops winting tears
when with the material like that, with that material, I
think we'll pass. But nice, that was still a nice,
nice effort. And so they've got like a I think
it's a fifty room fifty two room hotel and they've
got golf course and food and so we're gonna have
a good time. I look forward to it. But we'll
give away a pair of tickets before the end of
(12:21):
the grum. Last thing, you know, you know, you know
who is Detroit beating? Well, it's their offenses picked up
where they were last year and they're doing the same.
They're they're offensively, they're really really good, and defensively they're
still relatively healthy. They're good. They're a good club. You
don't have to say they're the best at football, but
(12:42):
they're certainly a top five team right now. I don't
know how you cannot say they're not.
Speaker 3 (12:45):
Either way.
Speaker 1 (12:46):
The Vikings have beaten the exact same teams too, So
if you're gonna argue that and they like, well the
Bikings aren't that great, that that's exactly right. And our
wins have not been as convincing. Other than Cincinnati, they're they're.
Speaker 2 (13:01):
In this town, not in just this town, all across
the National Football League. The reigning NFL Coach of the
Year Kevin O'Connell, has been bestowed with the title of
Quarterback Whisperer. Had any quarterback that he comes in contact
with immediately blossoms flourishes, start playing at a level he
(13:28):
never has before. Kind of started with Cousins, even though
I don't know if we made Cousins that much better.
I think Cousins was already pretty quality quarterback. I don't
know if he took a real step forward, but maybe
he did. Maybe if you break down the numbers, I
know we had a terrific season under O'Connell. Was that
first fourteen and three year? Thirteen and four? Was it
thirteen and four? The first year? And he was really
good And I don't know if he was I don't
(13:49):
know if O'Connell and then you know, when we got
past or not. For those first couple of games, he
looked brilliant. If you'll remember, after the first game, Viking
fans were saying, we need to sign past or not
to a long term. It was almost to know, like
remember somebody said that we needed to sign sooda eight
million dollar deal. There were people that wanted to sign
a Pastor not to a long deal. So the the
(14:11):
head coaches also said, and he has a couple of
pet phrases that he uses, including our players played their
best when their best was required. He also says, organizations
more times than not fail quarterbacks than quarterbacks fail organizations,
which means we failed for the past or not. We
(14:34):
failed for Mullins, we failed for several other quarterbacks. But
we've obviously done a lot for Sammy Darnold. Again, you
and I talked about how he spent a year with
San Francisco, a Super Bowl year as the backup. He
didn't play, but he Darnald has said working in that
organization scene, how a real team operates, was instrumental to
(14:57):
the why he played. Danny Dying was also here for
a very short period of time. He is now flourishing
with Indianapolis after leaving the Giants. He came here and
he was here for just a handful of games. At
the tail end of last season, decided to go to
greener pastures. And I think that was really doing large
part of the vikings that I think made it perfectly
(15:17):
clear they were not going to go with Sam Donald.
They didn't offer him a deal, they didn't want to
pay him, they didn't sign Aaron Rodgers. I don't think
they really made much of an offer to Danny. They
wanted to go with their hand picked a draft pick.
JJ McCarthy. Danny Dimes was recently, I think this week
was in a is it a podcast of some sort.
Speaker 1 (15:40):
Fits and wit?
Speaker 2 (15:43):
That must be you because you're wit so fits and wit?
Do you know who fits would be? Oh, and then
would be the former Rams lineman. Right, they do a
podcast together, and they had Danny Dimes, you just set
this up. Well, they asked him like, you know, why
(16:04):
are you playing at this level? Or what was the
question they were doing. Yeah, I'll play the whole question.
I'll play the entire body.
Speaker 1 (16:11):
Yes, here we go, Daniel Jones, New York Giants, and
then go to Minnesota and come here.
Speaker 3 (16:16):
What are some of the things you feel like you've
grown in or maybe experiences you've had that you've matured from. Well,
I always thought I worked, you know, really hard.
Speaker 4 (16:23):
I tried to work really hard, and it was important
to me to prepare, watch film, study, and I think
I did that, you know. But then going to Minnesota,
I saw how Sam prepared, how you know, Kevin prepared,
those guys, Josh McCown, Greg Gednsky, that crew, and how
detailed they were day day in and day out on
every little bit of the plan and how they're going
(16:44):
to study it, what they're looking for, walking through it,
quizzing each other in the quarterback room.
Speaker 3 (16:49):
And that made a big impression on me.
Speaker 4 (16:51):
And I was like, okay that you know, this is
this is maybe the next.
Speaker 3 (16:54):
Level of some of that stuff. And I think that changed.
Speaker 4 (16:58):
I think Kevin's just how aggressive he was in the
play calling.
Speaker 3 (17:01):
I mean, you guys see it.
Speaker 4 (17:02):
It's like it's play pass, but it's a lot of
dropback shots, you know, taking taking taking their chances. And
and that made an impression on me too. So you know,
I think several things like that, and just being around uh,
being around those guys.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
And that quarterback whisper that's there. It is, you can't
deny it anymore. He did credit Darnell to start watching.
Simmy also credited which any core the the uh the
quarterbacks coach, which I think is is a good point.
That's kind of what I've been trying to say all along.
Is I just and it's it's not just. O'Connell is
(17:37):
just the latest example of the idolization and pedestalization people
get when they have uh some success and all of
a sudden they need to be labeled this they need
to be labeled that everybody's got to be the greatest
we've ever seen and the best of this, the best
of that, because that's just the way we feed off
that that's the sort of things we look for in
sports sports sports. I thought what was important there was
(17:58):
was he was talking about how aggress and how he
basically says, with O'Connell's offense, it's I don't know if
I would call it air Coriel. Don don Coriel was
head coach offensive coordinator for the Chargers back in the
days of Dan Fouts, And they threw the ball early,
(18:21):
they threw it often, and they threw it long. And
that's what I think O'Connell likes to do. He likes
to get and when you have two we talked about
this in the first segment, when you have two wide
receivers that can spread the field like or stretch the
field like at Addie and Jet, because both those guys
can you know they they both they're not doing little
(18:43):
button hooks and square ins and sad that they're they're
they're they're downfield. But to be able to do that,
you have to have an offensive line that can give
the quarter because it takes a few takes a few
seconds for those those routes to development for a guy
to to to get open. So you need a line
(19:05):
that can provide that kind of protection, and then you
need a quarterback like they they talked about the coach
himself was talking about how we thinks McCarthy should have
picked up something watching Wentz these past a few weeks
because and we know Wentz is probably a midland quarterback,
maybe slightly above average, slightly below however you want to
(19:26):
rank him. But he's played pretty well for the Vikings
and relief McCarthy. But he makes quick decisions. He's he's
I mean, he's gotten sacked and a lot of those
I think might be coverage sacks or maybe the line
breaking down with last week we talked about it, they
ended the game with only one of their their to
start the season. We had the idea of these are
(19:46):
gonna be the five guys that start for us. We're
gonna have Ryan at center, We're gonna have Fries at
right guard, and then we're gonna have Ryan O'Neil. Then
we're gonna have Jackson at left guard. Right the young
kid was Pencil didn't start, yes, and then it was
gonna be derosol. Well, Darris how didn't start the season.
Jackson's hurt? Uh? Ryan concussions? Yeah, Kelly is it? Yeah? Uh? Uh?
(20:09):
Is it Kelly Ryan? Or Ryan Kelly?
Speaker 1 (20:10):
Ryan?
Speaker 2 (20:11):
Kelly Ryan Kelly. He's got concussion issues. And O'Neill's been
out because he's got a he's got a spring knee.
And despite that fact that last drive was mighty impressive
that in that game against who do we just beat
the Browns? Yeah? Beat the Browns. That was an impressive
drive to drive. In the final drive of the game
where you had to take the ball all the way
(20:32):
down the field, they were able to do and score
the Tuddy Selp. Yeah, there are there are a lot
of positives.
Speaker 1 (20:39):
I looked at that as compliment to KOC. What else.
It's kind of insulting the chance. Right Wait, if you're
in New York listening to this right now, you're going, oh, yeah,
our coaching staff is awful.
Speaker 2 (20:48):
That's correct, that's correct.
Speaker 1 (20:49):
But I would also say J. J. McCarthy also had
the same opportunity to learn from Sam Darnold last year
in KOCY, So we still need to.
Speaker 2 (20:59):
Hold on.
Speaker 1 (21:01):
He's gonna learn. He just hasn't enough chance to show it. Yeah,
he's gonna show us next week against Philadelphia.
Speaker 2 (21:05):
Exactly right, one final break, I'll come back with another
segment to go, and then we turn it over a
big ticket. J G here on what we affectionately call
Evan one point three the fan. You know, the music
(21:31):
makes it sound like something really exciting and controversial, really
fun to listen to.
Speaker 1 (21:38):
Is coming up intense?
Speaker 2 (21:40):
Yeah, it's music's very miss Lee. I'm not gonna get anything.
Speaker 1 (21:46):
Of such about three seconds. Wait, so the music's about's changed.
Speaker 3 (21:49):
Right, Wow.
Speaker 2 (21:55):
Metallica II, You're Maiden bag down five finger deathlock No.
Five finger punch, Punch Punch and Judy punch truck. You
(22:15):
want to laugh, you face off? Just a couple of pickpockets.
It's the Petty Theft Tour with the common Man, Meat Sauce,

(22:36):

Mundelo Guy max Is on the Green and Spicer at

Speaker 1 (22:58):
There's no false average here like they're they're acknowledging ahead time.
We are stealing money from you since don't come in
with any expectations.
Speaker 2 (23:05):
Oh yeah, and we should let you know that they're
we don't have a money back guarantee. You pay and
you're not satisfied to con too. That's just the way
she goes uh tenneby. You know me, I'm a big
power rankings guy. I stumbled across the weekly quarterback power
rankings king the signal callers, the signal callers, Who do
(23:31):
you think? CBS Sports has says the number one quarterback
right now in all the profitable.
Speaker 1 (23:37):
Still going to lean Josh Allen, even though it wasn't
as favorable the other.
Speaker 3 (23:40):
Night it is.
Speaker 2 (23:41):
Josh Allen says he may not have gotten the best
of the rival Patriots and a surprise Week five defeat
putting the ball in Harm's way a bit more than
usual as of late, but he's still the NFL's most
trustworthy playmaker. At the position this side of Patrick Mahomes.
Yet they don't have Patrick Mahomes number two.
Speaker 1 (23:58):
I was actually in an say Mahomes. I know they're
not the records nege, but Mahomes has actually had a
pretty good five game stretch here.
Speaker 2 (24:04):
Who do you think they have at number two?
Speaker 1 (24:07):
I mean you kind of like your obvious guys, Like
you know, Jalen Hurts has not been great at throwing
the football. You have Burrow and Lamar Jackson are both
hurt it technically probably should be Daniel Jones. I just
don't know if they're going to give him the equity
or not. And then you have you know, you're Jared
Goff's and your Baker Mayfield's. Yeah, Jared Goff has not
(24:27):
been off.
Speaker 2 (24:28):
Well, here's what I can. I say this because I
remember when the Lions made that trade and I said,
I think the Lion's got a really good quarterback out
of the deal, and people that disagreed with me and said, meta,
he's just Jared Goff. He's not very good. He's not
good in the clutch. Yeah, he went to a big game,
but that was more because of the system he played with.
(24:49):
You played with McVay we can played with McVay in
a quarterback whisper, and I remember telling people, I'm this
very radio station, and I'm I'm not wrong. Often, as
you know, I'm almost always right. I nailed that one.
Jared off is very good. Again. I do think if
he's got a patrick, you put him behind this patchword
Vikings offensive line, he probably looks more like JJ McCarthy,
(25:10):
but when you give him time, he can read it.
He's a veteran quarterback that's very good at what he does.
Number three tend to me, I don't think you're going
to get this one.
Speaker 1 (25:21):
So it's obviously not even the names I've already mentioned
you managed. Matter of fact, it was another person that
was draft Herbert Stafford Lawrence.
Speaker 2 (25:29):
He would no. It was another guy that when he
was drafted, there was a lot of pushback by fans
of that team, by members of that team, or at
least one member of that team. And I said, well,
if you're the general manager, Jordan loves number three quarterback
and I don't know if he's three, but I think
I feel vindicated that when he was drafted, most people,
(25:54):
including Aaron Rodgers, were beside themselves. How do you draft
you've got Aaron Rodgers. He needs a he needs a
wide receiver. You're doing a disservice. And I defended the
selection by saying, as a caretaker of the organization, you
might be wrong, but if you think you see a
franchise quarterback, you it's incumbent upon you to select him,
(26:18):
even if you already have a quarterback there. Green Bay's
done it before they had far They drafted Rogers, they
had Rogers, they drafted Love. Sometimes you just have to
Here's what it says, resting up on the Packers by
By in Week five, Love may have had a scarily
sloppy finished to Green Bay's last out in and overtime tie,
but when asked to heave at it, when asked to
(26:41):
heave it, as Matt Lafleur's signal caller, he's been electric,
averaging eight point three yards per toss.
Speaker 1 (26:49):
It's pretty good.
Speaker 2 (26:49):
They like what they see in him. Matty Stafford at four,
and then Patty Mahomes. Yeah, at number five. They say
the magic is still within Mahomes. Not hard to see
it when he's on the move, single handedly carrying the
Chiefs ground game. But he but even he isn't meant
to press so hard. Kansas City's unusually sloppy setup is
(27:11):
in doing him a lot of favors. Then they have
Baker Mayfield, another guy that I've always liked, and again
I he's one of those guys where if he were
at the quarterback of my team, it's one of those
tend to be where you know what it was like
it's third and twelve or whatever, you're kind of you
know how you put your hands over your face not
to look, but then you kind of open your two
fingers to get a peak. That's how I feel when Mayfield,
(27:33):
because he can He's not afraid to throw it at
any time into any kind of an area. Now, just
got some guns, and I know I like help run.
Speaker 1 (27:41):
Occasionally get tough yardage in those situations.
Speaker 2 (27:44):
Week after week, Mayfield further cements himself as the face
of the Bucks. Even when missing kivettes like Mike Evans,
he scraps it out with a near unmatched vigor and
he's all but mastered the art of fourth quarter gun slinging.
Then your guy Hurts at seven, Presscot at eight, Jade
and Daniels at nine, and then Sammy Darnald at ten,
(28:05):
Well he forgot former Viking. Here's what it says. A
rushed throw turn pick ended his bid for a shootout
winning Week five. But on the whole, Donald's been razor sharp,
feeding Jackson Smith the jigba under his snappy direction. The
Seahawks are averaging almost thirty points a game, and we
had him well, we all know the decision that was made.
(28:27):
One hundred million dollars was a lot of money, and
I think there was still a sour taste. And I
don't know. I don't think O'Connell's ever come out and
said that Detroit game just really really left a bad
taste in my mouth. And I just don't know if
you know, as much as we pushed him along and
I quarterback whispered him to be in that situation and
(28:49):
do that, I don't know if I can trust him.
I don't know if that was it or they were
just so high on McCarthy, and I'm thinking it's probably
the latter. They're thinking one hundred million for Donald and
he had that kind it was a bad performance against
the lines or our hand picked guy that has only
lost three games at high school in college. I think
that's why they did. They've got Drake May at eleven,
(29:11):
Justin Herbert at twelve. Do you think that's a little
low with some of the other guys up above us?
Speaker 1 (29:15):
Well, you know, I guess two weeks ago, I think
he would have been in the top five. And the
last two performances against you know one at least being
a mediocre team have not gone so well for him,
So things opinions changed quickly. In the National Football League,
it said, so what have you done for me lately?
Type of league?
Speaker 2 (29:30):
They got Rogers at thirteen, Danny Jones at fourteen, bow
Knicks at fifteen, c J Stroud at sixteen. Of the
mighty have falling Rember Stroud? Was it his rookie year
he was brilliant or second year when he took the
rookie year he was brilliant really, I mean for the
most and took a step back last year exactly. They
have Trevor Lawrence at seventeen, Caleb Williams at eighteen, Michael
(29:55):
Pennox at nineteen, then Tua at twenty and then checking
in at twenty one. Is Carson wentz Or at twenty one?
We're at twenty one. Here's what it says about Carson above,
averaging says for one half of his second starting place
at JJ McCarthy, Wentz was borderline reckless, absorbing big shots
on the move. His veteran touch prevailed in the end
(30:18):
as he kept feeding his gifted wideouts to complete and
overseas comeback. Almost sounds like a movie to me the
way it was described there rated PG, well, maybe rated
R for violence, but they got him at twenty one.
Then it's Jones, Murray Jackson Dart at twenty four, Jay
Fields at twenty five, Gabby at twenty six, Gino twenty seven,
(30:42):
Cam Wore twenty eight, Bryce Young at twenty nine, then
Joe Flacco at thirty, Spencer Rattler thirty one, Cooper Rush, Baltimore,
Ravens sitting at the bottom because they don't know. I
guess they're not including Lamar because he's just the current
the current group of quarterbacks.
Speaker 1 (30:58):
I will say, I find the quarterback power rankings to
be fascinating, right because if you would have done any
power rankings in the last three four years, like there
always seems to be like an obvious top five and
then the next five or six there's another tier. But
they're always got the same quarterbacks in the right like
you got everyone's got the same tier. If you look
at these like current NFL Power rankings, like the guy
(31:20):
who's sitting at fifteen or sixteen, some could argue you
could be four, and some of the guys, some of
the guys that are like eight to nine, you could
argue you should be top three. Like it's very interchangeable, yes,
And I don't think there's really defined tiers this year.
Speaker 2 (31:33):
And the way, you know, how I've always ranked quarterbacks
is that it's it's it's a very simple formula, and
it's probably it's it's not an exact science, and it's
probably isn't the only way, but a lot of people
like to use you know, the statistics and the saber
metrics and the you know, yards per pass and and
how many completion percentage in your QBR rating and touchdown
(31:57):
to interception ratio in all that I believe is important,
But I still go, I got to win a ball game,
and you know, I'm trailing by by a tuddy and
I'm deep in my own zone, especially if you're on
the road and the weather's not good and you might
only have one time outlet, Who do you want to
hand the ball to. And yeah, I mean I I
(32:17):
like golf and love and some of these others, but man, Mahomes.
Speaker 1 (32:24):
I'm not reve ahead of Mahomes.
Speaker 2 (32:25):
Yeah, that's what I'm saying. You know, I don't even
put golf ahead of Mahomes, even though golf has done it.
Some of these guys just go, well.
Speaker 1 (32:31):
You know, I guess those two can decide after Sunday. Yeah, exactly.
Speaker 2 (32:35):
You look at some of those and you just go,
I'd rather have one of those guys at the top
of the list. But it's it's interesting so many of
these names are younger quarterbacks that are really just getting
started in my career. You know, you have you know
Love who's basically is this is thirty year as a
starter or second or third, right as all four is
(32:58):
up to four and out? Three or fourth, Yeah, you
probably right, or fourth. Jade Daniels just starting. Darnold even
though he's been in the year, this is only second
year where you feel like he's he's he's actually playing
Drake may Bow Nicks Stroud, third years a starter, Yeah, Kayler,
Michael Pennix. A lot of young guys in there at
(33:21):
at quarterback.
Speaker 1 (33:22):
It would have been interesting. If McCarthy was still playing,
where he'd be ranked in that one.
Speaker 2 (33:25):
Well, yeah, it would be well, I would think if
you're going strictly on accomplishments for this year, it'd be
hard to rank him real high, just because we've talked
about that ratio. He was simply brilliant against the Bears
in the fourth quarter. I think we all, I mean,
he impressed. He impressed everyone so much so that he
won the NFC Offensive Player of the Week. Now we
(33:47):
we kind of joked a little bit about there must
not have been that many great performances, but he was
really good in that fourth quarter. The other seven quarters
he's played, he's looked a little bit lost. And you know,
part of that does have to do with that offensive
line as leaky as it is, right, Yes, And that
goes back to what O'Connell said earlier this week when
(34:07):
he said he was almost suggesting that not that the
injury was a blessing in disguise, but watching again now again,
he had a chance to watch Donald for a year,
but it didn't seem like last year's offensive line was
as leaky as this year's until that game with Detroit
and then the Rams right, especially the Rams game, the
(34:29):
Detroit game. It was mostly on Donald. The Rams game
they had nine sacks and never rush Moore four. But
it didn't seem like there was that much pressure on
Donald last year. If it was, he was picking it
up awful quick because they went fourteen to three. But
I don't think McCarthy's really stood much of a chance
either in defense of him. I mean, when you've never
played NFL football before other than that preseason one half
(34:54):
he played, and I know he's Look, I always won
a lot. He won a Natty at the college. They
throw off that number all the time. In all the
games he started in high school and college, he's only
lost three games. But when when when when When you're
playing National Football League caliber defenses and the Bears are
(35:15):
that's pretty good defense, and the Falcons are pretty good too.
Right when you're playing pretty good defenses like that and
you've got you're not getting a lot of protection on
the line. It's it's hard even for a veteran quarterbacks
to succeed, much less a young kid. So it will
be interesting to see if that, if this line gets
gets healthy again. We're expecting Jackson back in a week,
could he be ready for the Eagles game because I
(35:36):
thought it was like a wasn't it like a risk? Yeah,
so he'll be back.
Speaker 1 (35:40):
Deris thought he's coming off him and Cashman, Yeah, cashman,
cash out, cash in, cash out.
Speaker 2 (35:46):
But on the offensive line you'll have Dearisaw and Jackson
and Fry, so you'll have three of those guys and.
Speaker 1 (35:53):
Maybe maybe so it'll be more interesting and maybe Brandell.
He looked pretty decent at center against Cleveland. It is
the first time I ever playing there. It's very small sample, but.
Speaker 2 (36:05):
Well, And you know, anytime you see a performance like that,
you you start to wonder if you know, because everybody wants,
you know, some of these positions are so tough to play.
You know, we all know quarterbacks certainly, but you know center,
you know. But and I know it's commed, but you
(36:26):
see a performance identity, go how hard can it be?
A guy who's never done it before went in there,
played pretty well. I mean, I don't think it wasn't
like he stuck out like a sore thumb and was
having all kinds of trouble. Seemed like he knew, you know,
because I think the center kind of helps with the
protections and all those kinds of things, and I thought
he did just you you wouldn't put it this way.
I never noticed. I never went, boy, we're really having
trouble at the center position. I never thought that during
(36:47):
the game.
Speaker 1 (36:47):
So well, maybe I don't know what goes into changes
at the line with protections. Maybe having a veteran quarterback
who can kind of make those calls whereas JJ might
need a little more help from center and looking at
line protection stuff, maybe that helps having a veteran like
Carson in there.
Speaker 2 (37:06):
There was one other story I saw, and they were
talking about free agent acquisitions and how important they can
be to a team that's kind of on the cusp
of winning. Like little what the Eagles did last year,
I mean getting Saquon Barkley, I would say was one
of the most important free agent acquisitions in recent memory,
(37:30):
not just last year. I mean, they really didn't have
much of a running game they were using, wasn't it
DeAndre Swift? Is that it was. I mean they didn't
have much of a running game until they got Barkley
and then he went off for what was two thousand yards? Yeah,
who was the guy that got the Zach Bond? Is
that his name, defensive guy. Are you familiar for who?
(37:59):
He was Defensive Player of the Year last year for
the Eagles. I don't think it was for the I
don't think. No, it wasn't Eagles. It was hold On.
Speaker 1 (38:16):
Patrick. Certain was the defensive player of the year last year. Cornerback.
Speaker 3 (38:19):
He was.
Speaker 4 (38:21):
He was.
Speaker 2 (38:21):
Oh, he was a finalist. Ti'm sorry, finalist for the
for the defensive player. Yeah, it says, yeah. Zach Bond
was twenty twenty four's best veteran defensive player acquisition. He
made a smooth transition that a bond No, I said
bond uh okay rosie edge rushing outside linebacker to inside
linebacker and was a finalist for NFC or for the
(38:45):
NFL's Defensive Player of the Year when he was a
finalist sport So they were. So they were using those
examples as two really good free agent acquisitions. They have
tennel listed for this year, two of them former Vikings
Darnald and Danny Jones, two quarterbacks. But they also say
(39:07):
the Vikings own one of the best free agent pickups,
Isaiah Rodgers.
Speaker 1 (39:14):
Zay Rodgers I called so far, so far he won
a lot of that one game, yeah.
Speaker 2 (39:20):
Against the Bengals. He was brilliant. Yeah, but you know,
I've had this discussion with with with with with friends
and listeners and such like that. Maybe you and I
have even discussed it too. Going the free agent route
can be risky. It can because you're generally spending a
lot of money right your sign We've seen that. We
(39:42):
we signed to interior guys on both the four players,
two on the on the interior of the defense and
the offense. We spent a lot of money to get
those players. And you know, you're you're you're taking a
little bit of a leap of faith. Most of them
have a good track record, that's why they're getting paid
a lot of money, but they also generally a little
long in the tooth, maybe coming off injuries like with
(40:04):
the Vikings players. And so you know, I always defended
the and you know we took text messages regarding that
from listeners and I always I defended the organization. I
will continue to do that that if you feel like
you're in a position to win now, which are coming
off of fourteen and three season, and if you're going
to go with a rookie quarterback, you need to protect
(40:25):
them and the middle of that Vikings offensive line was
a mess, and I know that the two guys we
signed were coming off major injuries from last year, but
I still think you got to take that chance sometimes.
But it can be it can be devastating if you
go out and get free agents and they're not any
good and you've got all that money invested into them.
It it it can be devastating for a team for
that season of drafts and draft picks too, right, But
(40:49):
so when you're trying to when you're trying to fill
with those those high price free agents, it can be.
Speaker 1 (41:01):
Well, that's a good thing about the Vikings free agent
picks over the last couple of seasons is they're getting
good productions from the free agents, and typically at a
smaller price. Yes, now the Kelly one doesn't look like
it's gonna work out so well, but you know, Rogers
is completely on the cheap. They got him on day
one of free agency and people are like, what are
you guys doing? And that looks like a steal. I
(41:24):
mean Van Ginkle last year was at a good price.
You know, Gernard they spent money on, but that one
worked out. Cashman at his price has been good. They've
had a lot of hits there. I'm starting to put
it together. He gets more hits in the draft, but
probably we do that as well. Program Password tomorrow, right correct,
Max Fuller and Julia Daniels. I believe she has played once,
(41:47):
but it wasn't when we were here, but Julia Daniels
of Caroln.
Speaker 2 (41:53):

feminine touch at once. She'll play program password as well.
