Speaker 3 (00:34):
That's right, Welcome back, PATCHIP Morning Show.
Speaker 4 (00:36):
I have an ignorant question for Zach and Chris and Williams,
specifically Williams.
Speaker 5 (00:40):
You guys know NASCAR and stuff.
Speaker 3 (00:42):
NASCAR driver extraordinary.
Speaker 1 (00:44):
Yeah, so William's gonna go on and win the Dayton
and all this whatever. He's gonna be a big deals
could be huge, and we're gonna be like, yeah we.
Speaker 3 (00:48):
Have some that.
Speaker 6 (00:49):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (00:49):
Yeah, we're gonna claim that we knew him before we
get started racing.
Speaker 3 (00:52):
Yeah, we got a sponsorship. We got to introduced him
to his owner, Joe Gibbs.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
We introduced him to Storty, you know, to start before.
Have we ever had the state of Minnesota. Has Minnesota
ever had a big time NASCAR driver because I can't
name one.
Speaker 7 (01:11):
No, we have, maybe way back then, but no one's
ever won a championship or a race.
Speaker 5 (01:15):
Okay, Michel, all right, so we need one.
Speaker 2 (01:18):
That is one of the coolest things about watching the CW,
watching the Infinity Series, which I believe is gonna be
the O'Reilly Series next year, hearing when when they had
the announcers are talking about William, when they talk about
the fact that they actually mentioned Minnesota by name, it
was literally it was kind of shocking the first time
I heard it. It's like I never heard Minnesota talked
(01:40):
about on a NASCAR broadcast before. And that's that's why
it's like it's it's so awesome having William being a
part of this because it's sort of putting us on
the NASCAR map now a little bit here, let's go sweet.
Speaker 8 (01:51):
No doubt about it, do you know what, Zacho? Go ahead,
because you've been sitting back there very patient while I
dominated the conversation, but I know you had some questions
for you.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Yeah, No, I just I want to talk about a
little bit about the unfortunate end to your season last year.
Speaker 6 (02:04):
With with Talladega.
Speaker 2 (02:06):
Obviously everybody knows what a what a monster track that is,
everybody going very very quick. And I remember watching this
crash that that you were you were involved in. You know,
it's it was a classic, you know, three four wide
in front of you, all sorts of chaos and it
looked like maybe you were going to get past it,
but unfortunately you did not. We were talking a last
(02:30):
segment about about fear, about you know, what it takes
to actually be a NASCAR driver and when you go
through something like that, something that was I would think
would be called traumatic. What was first of all, what
did you see in that crash? Well play in the
on the stream at KFE dot com slash watch, but
what did you see in that crash and what did
(02:50):
you learn from it? And what basically what what happened
in the moments after.
Speaker 7 (02:55):
Yeah, So before the crash, we were leading some laps
and it.
Speaker 5 (03:00):
Was actually a really good race for us.
Speaker 7 (03:01):
Our car was really good, our motor was strong, which
you need to have at Talladega. A strong motor too
be able to lead a line and hold the draft well.
And then I think we fell back a little bit.
I don't know we were running tenth or twelfth running
the high line, and at that track, you're just wide
open trying to keep in the draft, tucked up right
(03:23):
behind the car in front of you, and I don't
know what happened they got together in front of me.
Obviously I remember the whole thing, but somebody basically came
up right in front of me and I t b
on them. I probably was going one hundred ninety five,
went to six game.
Speaker 5 (03:40):
Foor hard to wrap my head around. Yeah, ninety five, yep.
Speaker 3 (03:43):
It's on the stream right now KFE dot com slash Watch. Yeah.
Speaker 7 (03:45):
It was a thirty G impact, which isn't the most
you see, but just how I hit, I kind of
got two heads right there, and then I got slammed
up against the wall and that's what gave you my concussion.
That blowed to the right, and then I got the
wind knocked out. I mean, I was just sitting in
my seat as I'm coasting right there, and I just
(04:06):
couldn't do anything. I couldn't even move, and I knew
I had a concussion right away, and I wasn't knocked out.
Speaker 8 (04:11):
For people watching on the stream, which which number of
car are you for the people watching on the.
Speaker 5 (04:15):
String eighteen the white orange right there?
Speaker 3 (04:18):
You go, h the car right, yeah, you're saying on
the stream right there.
Speaker 5 (04:21):
Yeah, So.
Speaker 3 (04:23):
Did you get your hands off the wheel in time?
Did you know it was coming?
Speaker 6 (04:27):
No?
Speaker 5 (04:27):
For the hit?
Speaker 7 (04:27):
No, No, I don't even. It happened so fast. It's crazy,
like it was kind of like a semi truck hitting you.
I don't know, unbelievable.
Speaker 8 (04:33):
You know that one of the things they you learn
early in racing is that you get your hands off
the string whell if you're gonna have a hard impact,
so you don't break your wrists.
Speaker 7 (04:40):
Yes, yeah, that is if you, you know, lose breaks
or something wild, or your throttle sticks and you know
you're going for the wall. But that I know there's
a wreck down low, but I didn't know I would
be in it. I didn't know they come up right
in front of me.
Speaker 8 (04:53):
What was your spotder saying to you? I'm sorry, Martie.
What was your spoder saying to you? Did he tell
you it was coming?
Speaker 3 (04:59):
Did he did he know?
Speaker 7 (05:00):
It's so fast? You can't But then after the fact,
you know, he's always checking on me. And it took
me a while to respond because I couldn't breathe. They
were wondering if I was okay. But it is fine.
Speaker 9 (05:11):
What was it like the very next time you got
into a car after that crash.
Speaker 7 (05:16):
Gonna be honest, I've been in a car since that,
but it's fine, It'll be fine.
Speaker 5 (05:21):
I would be just like normal. Why have you not
been in a car?
Speaker 7 (05:24):
Well, So, there were two races after that to end
the season. I couldn't race them because of the concussion,
because I didn't want to re injure myself because that's
probably the worst thing you can.
Speaker 5 (05:33):
Do for that.
Speaker 7 (05:34):
And then after that there's really no races except for
one late model race in the off season, and then
everything starts back up mid January in February.
Speaker 9 (05:43):
But you do not have a fear of getting back
in the car.
Speaker 5 (05:47):
No hesitation, no nerves, no no, no.
Speaker 7 (05:51):
I mean there's always some nerves, but those go away
as soon as the race starts.
Speaker 8 (05:55):
Is it true that Dale Junior helped you find some
people to make sure you're okay.
Speaker 7 (05:59):
Yes, I in Pittsburgh Mickey Collins for my first concussion.
He helped me out when I was in Late Models.
Mickey Collins is great. He's got a good philosophy and
concussions and how to treat him. It's basically, you got
to overstress your brain and not shy away from all
your symptoms and kind of just stay in your normal
(06:20):
routine and wake up early eight hours of sleep and
kind of like a like a military type of concussion protocol.
Speaker 5 (06:27):
Damn, well, your dad's in the room.
Speaker 9 (06:29):
I can't imagine what it was like as a dad
to watch your child in an accident like that on TV.
Speaker 5 (06:36):
And he's nodding his head, yes, yeah, yeah.
Speaker 4 (06:38):
I also got a little tip from a source. Don't
know who it is. So you recently met the Pope. Yeah,
the Pope is a sports fan. We've learned that that
he likes the white things, but does he like Nascar?
He did like Nascar. He seemed pretty interested in that.
Speaker 6 (06:53):
You know.
Speaker 7 (06:53):
When I met him, I greeted myself and you have
to call him holy father, your holy father, sid. I'm
William I'm a NASCAR driver from the US, and he
spoke at English. He had a little bit of an accent.
And then we got a group picture at the end
and he said, you know, I want to stand by
the NASCAR driver, which I thought was pretty cool. Yeah, yeah,
and then he asked what car I jove? I said
(07:14):
Toyota Supra and then yeah, that was it. But it
was really cool to do that. That was once in
a lifetime thing.
Speaker 5 (07:20):
Pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (07:21):
How hands on is mister Joe Gibbs.
Speaker 7 (07:23):
I mean I see him about every day in the shop.
Speaker 3 (07:26):
He can't even believe.
Speaker 8 (07:27):
That's so crazy, man, he had a mythical feature figure
to me, you know what I mean, that's crazy.
Speaker 5 (07:31):
I know.
Speaker 7 (07:31):
I bet you guys, being football fans, don't know how
he ended up in Nascar.
Speaker 5 (07:37):
But he's always at the shop, earlier.
Speaker 7 (07:40):
Than really anybody else and later than anybody else, so
he's always in it.
Speaker 9 (07:44):
You know.
Speaker 7 (07:44):
I'll have a talk with him all the time just
about how our season's going. And it's always great to
talk to somebody like that that was such a good
leader in football and then brings it over to Nascar,
and he's got so many ways to help no matter what.
Speaker 5 (07:59):
He's eighty five.
Speaker 3 (08:01):
Yeah, wow, Well I didn't realize it.
Speaker 5 (08:03):
I mean, moving pretty good. Yeah, and he's too old
to drive a car alone to tell you, I bet
he's in better ship to me.
Speaker 8 (08:09):
I'll tell you why, Like, wasn't he the world champion
racquetball player or was a racketball handball something like that,
he won the world championship.
Speaker 5 (08:16):
I'll have to bring that up to him.
Speaker 6 (08:17):
Yeah.
Speaker 8 (08:18):
I read his book a long time ago, and he
won the world championship maybe twice in racketball while he
was still coaching or something.
Speaker 1 (08:23):
So he's he's reached the pinnacle of handball? What something
in NASCAR?
Speaker 7 (08:28):
Right?
Speaker 5 (08:28):
Yep, that's a fact that that has never been hit.
Do you ever want yeah?
Speaker 7 (08:32):
Right?
Speaker 5 (08:32):
Do you ever run into Michael Jordan?
Speaker 10 (08:35):
No?
Speaker 5 (08:35):
I have not?
Speaker 3 (08:36):
Okay, Yeah, he's you guys know obviously he's a Nastcary
team owner. Yeah right?
Speaker 5 (08:39):
And in North Carolina is Brad Doherty's still in racing too.
Speaker 1 (08:42):
Do you know?
Speaker 5 (08:43):
Yes? Would they changed his team name? Okay? But he's
still in the industry though, or.
Speaker 7 (08:48):
I don't know if he's an owner anymore, but he'll
do some announcing.
Speaker 5 (08:50):
That's a basketball name from thirty years ago.
Speaker 3 (08:53):
But still, what's it like to race at Bristol?
Speaker 5 (08:56):
Bristol's nuts.
Speaker 7 (08:57):
Everyone describes it as a jet fighter and a gymnasium.
Speaker 5 (09:00):
I don't know why they picked that, but that's pretty
good though, that's real good. It's just script really tight.
Speaker 7 (09:05):
The racing is really hard, and it's multiple grooves and
there's a huge load on your body because of the banking.
It's a concrete track track, so it makes a lot
of grip. It's just really difficult. You got to do
three hundred laps around that place, that with the fifteen
second laps, so you kind of get lost really fast.
So you have to stay on track and remember which
turn is which because they look exactly identical, but you
(09:27):
have to run them different.
Speaker 1 (09:28):
A couple final things then we got to break and
play initials. But can we go back to.
Speaker 4 (09:31):
It when you were nine and you said I want
to try this and then you said you liked it,
which is cool, right, but that doesn't mean you get
to like be good at it. How quickly did your
family or friends or whoever was racing with you say like, oh,
this kid's got something abnormally good for nine or ten
years old. How quick did you like get your feet
set and have a skill set.
Speaker 7 (09:51):
I don't really know. I mean I can't talk for him,
but my first race I won, I had no idea
what I was doing. Whether that relates or not to
having any some amount of talent.
Speaker 5 (10:04):
I don't know.
Speaker 7 (10:04):
I'd say it in legend cars, probably towards the last
half of my career, if you want to say, in
legend cars and then late models, it shows up for sure.
Speaker 1 (10:13):
So this is what ages approximately thirteen fourteen, thirteen.
Speaker 4 (10:17):
Fourteen, you knew you had something that's pretty cool. That's
pretty quick though, in the big scheme of things, it's like.
Speaker 9 (10:22):
Three you already have made fat yep, William, How tall
are you and what is the ideal height for a
NASCAR driver?
Speaker 5 (10:28):
Great question? I would say, well, I'm five eleven and hey,
on your what five eleven? You get a fact? Jackie, No,
what's your height? And waite? It's five eleven one fifty five.
That's a huge bitch it. He has to do it. Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah,
he has to scratch you taller a lot of.
Speaker 7 (10:50):
Drivers I am. Yeah, Jeff Gordon was small. I think
he's five to nine or something.
Speaker 5 (10:54):
That is small. Jeff Gordon's five nine, yeah, and that's
about the ideal height.
Speaker 7 (11:02):
I'd say getting in and out of the car, you
know your seat position in the car. It helps if
you're shorter, so then you can get really comfortable. But me,
there's so many different seat options. We have a carbon
fiber bucket seat and then we pour a mold into it.
Speaker 5 (11:18):
That's custom basically to my body.
Speaker 7 (11:21):
But when you get tall, you kind of run out
of options in the car where you can move the
seat back forward, up and down, and getting in out
of the cars kind of up in the butt.
Speaker 5 (11:30):
You gotta go through the window.
Speaker 4 (11:31):
It's a little bit like how Rosie needs an exit
roll on a flight. Has to has to know like
he has to. Yeah, he's like sixty five. He can't
sit with the do you bo doke it.
Speaker 5 (11:40):
When you go in and out? Do you ever slide
across the hood? And I don't. I did make a
fool out of myself. Nascar is full of good character.
Maybe if I win. How about that when you.
Speaker 2 (11:51):
Talk about the heat in the in the cockpit there,
if you yeah, relax, Yeah, you get a fire suit.
Speaker 5 (12:02):
I mean it's crazy.
Speaker 7 (12:03):
Yeah, it sucks, but you can't really pay attention to
It's about one hundred thirty degrees for three hours. Yeah,
how do you survive? Adrenaline? I guess yeah, adrenaline and water. Yeah,
so we have.
Speaker 5 (12:18):
You start before you go. Yeah, it's sticky in there.
Speaker 7 (12:23):
Yeah, we have we have fresh air that blows to
our helmet and that's just fresh air, not cool, but
it feels very cool compared to the inside of the car.
And then we have a cool shirt that we will
sometimes run on really hot days. But it draws a
lot of amverage from the car, so that equals a
little bit less horspower. Not much, but sometimes it's a difference.
Speaker 3 (12:43):
Everything matters.
Speaker 8 (12:44):
Last one, and then we can go to break a promise, Cory,
is there a huge difference between one hundred and twenty
and one hundred and eighty?
Speaker 5 (12:52):
Can you tell yes? One By the sound of the car.
Speaker 7 (12:56):
I mean you're getting up there in RPM and and
honestly goes slower when you're going faster.
Speaker 5 (13:03):
It's really weird to say, keep time slows down?
Speaker 3 (13:06):
Yeah, what do you mean?
Speaker 7 (13:07):
Yeah, the res don't slow down for sure. Yeah, but
you kind of get into like a flow state.
Speaker 5 (13:14):
Really really yeah.
Speaker 3 (13:16):
I believe it.
Speaker 8 (13:17):
You got to have a certain different kind of mindset
and vision and reaction times that the rest of us
don't have. So I can see that you're different that
way because I couldn't do what you do. None of
us could. It's pretty impressive, man.
Speaker 5 (13:31):
Thank you.
Speaker 3 (13:31):
Looking forward to watching it more.
Speaker 1 (13:32):
Yeah, sure, do you have a bake to your shake? Like,
do you have a teammate?
Speaker 5 (13:37):
You know what I'm saying.
Speaker 6 (13:38):
I do.
Speaker 7 (13:39):
I do have four teammates. But it's tough because you
you work together on some tracks, on all the drafting
track tracks to help each other out to get to
the front, and then the other tracks your teammates you
share notes, but then also you're racing each other for
the wind, so it's tough. Yeah, it's the best, but
they are teammates.
Speaker 5 (13:59):
That's cool.
Speaker 3 (14:00):
Shake and bake.
Speaker 5 (14:01):
I love it.
Speaker 4 (14:01):
Yep, all right, William saw Wallach is here. He's gonna
play Initials. Maybe something he's not good at. Let's find out.
Who knows.
Speaker 5 (14:07):
Sounds like he's good at everything else, so we'll see.
Speaker 8 (14:09):
I don't know if you know this in he asked Sack,
if you go like this just the way he felt
like he was at home and.
Speaker 5 (14:17):
Might need that.
Speaker 1 (14:17):
Yeah, uh, Initials after this, and one of you has
a crack at a whole bunch of money because the
jackpot up next.
Speaker 11 (14:24):
It's the Initials game featuring the scene Paul Federal Credit
Union jackpot called one eight hundred three two zero fifty
three twenty six for your shot at the Initials Jackpot.
Speaker 5 (14:34):
Next, I'm the fan.
Speaker 6 (14:39):
Minder.
Speaker 2 (14:40):
You can watch the fan at kfan dot com slash watch.
All the Initials games, all the fun stuff is on
KFE dot com slash Watch. You can comment like scold
Corey twenty nine did, which he says, this guy won't
stop beating me in NASCAR twenty five. And I guess
that's another question for William. What's it like being in
a video game?
Speaker 5 (14:59):
I mean, it's pretty cool.
Speaker 7 (15:00):
I grew up playing those video games and to be
in then I came home one time and race with
my dad on it, so that was pretty cool.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
That's great man. Did he beat you?
Speaker 5 (15:10):
To be honest? Now?
Speaker 10 (15:11):
Yeah?
Speaker 5 (15:13):
Is that the game that Jordan Bionkey's in as well?
Speaker 7 (15:15):
Uh?
Speaker 1 (15:16):
Yeah, you know Jordan? Do you know Jordan and all
William or not not yet?
Speaker 5 (15:20):
Know you will?
Speaker 3 (15:20):
He's a reporter. He works for multiple Holes.
Speaker 5 (15:23):
Yes I do.
Speaker 7 (15:24):
Yeah, they have the comments post race yea, yeah exactly.
Speaker 1 (15:27):
So he used to work for KF and he used
to be a part of this show wow, and he
like loved.
Speaker 5 (15:32):
Nascar, worked with Chris on Nascar stuff and then he said,
screw KF.
Speaker 1 (15:35):
A I'm going to chase my dream and he went
to work for NASCAR Media.
Speaker 5 (15:39):
He's great, that's always a big deal. Now he's in
a video game.
Speaker 6 (15:42):
What the hell?
Speaker 5 (15:42):
How come we're not in a video game?
Speaker 8 (15:44):
You know, we're gonna have so many people now watching
NASCAR that maybe never would have given it a chance before,
just because they heard you on this show.
Speaker 3 (15:50):
So thanks for coming on.
Speaker 6 (15:51):
Man.
Speaker 1 (15:51):
