One on one point three, Katw The Dave Ryan in the Morning Shows,
Christmas Wish Chatty with Kayla. Kaylaand I go way back because we
see each other every year at theState Fair every year. So Kayla comes
up to the booth and it's like, oh my God, I love you
guys, blah blah blah. SoI don't know that you say that,
but I'm hoping that you do.Kayla, thanks for being here with Christmas
(00:21):
Wish. And like a lot ofpeople who do Christmas Wish, you never
imagine yourself, even two months ago, being here for a Christmas wish.
I never in my life think Iwould actually like full circle be here.
Now this isn't it's a bit ofa complex story. I don't want to
make sure we fill all the holesin So we're gonna do something different this
(00:43):
time. Instead of not talking aboutwhat happened until we get the wish e
on the phone, I'm going totalk to Kayla about how you know this
family and the horrible tragedies that they'vehad to endure starting five years ago,
and the kids that are involved. So let's talk about your friend and let's
(01:04):
start there. Yeah. Absolutely,so I am reaching out to you guys,
for my friends April and Jen.Okay, April and Gen those are
your friends, their sisters, theyare sisters, Okay, yes, And
the wish that I'm asking for isfor their mother and father, Mike and
Sue, and their nephews, Juniorand Anton. Okay, it's Christmas.
(01:25):
Okay, So right now as Iunderstand it, Junior and Anton, they
are now fourteen and eighteen years old. Yep. They lost their dad to
a heart attack five years ago whenthey were nine and thirteen years old.
So Dad is out of the PI. Dad's gone very hard on any kids.
Correct. November second was the accident. November second was the accident,
(01:49):
a serious, serious car accident. They then lost their mother. Correct.
Melissa died either shortly after or onthe scene. Correct, on the scene.
And Junior was in the car. Also, Anton apparently was not in
the car. No, he wasn'tOkay, which is good. So Junior
(02:09):
eighteen years old, high school student, plays video games, plays sports athlete.
What sports did? Junior play?Basketball and football? Both boys?
Okay? So super healthy, vibrant, full of life, eighteen years old,
looking forward to graduating and doing allthe things that you do, and
then there's the car accident. Suddenlyout of nowhere on November two. Mom
(02:32):
is gone. Correct, Junior didnot fare well. No, he was
in an automatic coma for two weeks. He was rushed to the hospital in
Acoma and then woke up and hada kind of relearn everything that kind of
happened to that day. And sohe said what they call a TBI traumatic
brain injury. And over the comingmonths they won't know how much he will
(02:55):
completely recover. Correct, when itwas super bad, they were I'm sure
if he was going to fully recoveror come out of it. And now
since we're kind of going about it, there's some light at the end of
the tunnel, Okay, and that'sgood to hear. Now, let's get
to Mike and Sue grandparents, right, Yes, of course, grandparents take
in the boys. And since Momis gone and Dad's been gone, I
(03:20):
mean, just tragedies as family hasfaced. And so I'm going to guess
that's where times become a little bittight with the money and the energy and
the time and the love and theattention and all the things. And Mike
and Sue, their grandparents are alittle bit older, they've got their own
things that they've got to do,and so your wish is for the boys
(03:42):
Grandma and Grandpa. Correct. Yeah, okay. I wanted to get that
clear because when I read the email, I read it several times. I
had I have to go back andbe like, okay, wait, who's
Anton again? So let's make thephone call right now to Mike, Grandpa
and and Anton fourteen. Yes,okay, you got all that joke.
I got it. I think so, but this is the second time I'm
(04:04):
going through it, so I thinkand now I understand it the best I
can. Now, before we getstarted, we always want to thank Brandon.
Here's another name to throw in themix is if you need to know,
we know Brandon. Brandon's our buddyfrom College Muscle Movers. Brandon,
you got about fifteen down, twoto go. Brandon, thanks for all
that you have done this year withCollege Muscle Movers. They deliver the wish.
(04:26):
So Brandon, thank you. Iappreciate that, of course. And
then Brandon is going to be doingone more tomorrow. What are you doing
for the holidays? Brandon, you'redoing anything special? I just know them.
Okay. Home home is in Rochester, Okay, not too far home
for the holidays. You know whatgood you deserve to get some time off,
relax, and Brandon, thanks againfor all you and college muscle movers
(04:47):
have done. Brandon is not onlydelivering the wish, but also serves as
our backup in case somebody doesn't answerthe phone. Brandon, you're on standby.
Thanks, and we'll talk to youagain tomorrow. Okay, sounds good.
All right, thank you, myfriend. Let's make the phone call
right now to Dad and Grandpa andSutton right okay, literally, okay,
(05:14):
Grandpa, Michae, Okay, Mikeand Sue and then Antony Anton, call
right now. So Anton has beenstaying with Mike and Sue, his grandparents,
and Sue actually has been staying everynight at the hospital with juniors.
So she's always there. She's grandmastepped up majorly and she's she's I'm assuming
she's there right now too, yeah, probably, yeah, So just the
(05:35):
boys, the boys at home.I got it. Oh, I didn't
know she was staying at the hospitalevery night. Every night, stays in
his room, has not left hisside since November second. Hello, Hey,
I'm calling for Mike. It's DaveRyan over at kat WB. Is
this Mike. Yes, Hey,good Mike. I had an inkling that
(05:59):
you might have had, maybe alittle bit of suspicion that we might be
calling you this morning with katbb's Christmaswish, and that's did you know about
this? I was, Yeah,I was warned a little bit that somebody
might be showing up here. Yeah. Well, in the midst of all
the bad news that you've had lately, this is just a little droplet of
(06:19):
good news with katbb's Christmas wish. And I am here with Kayla. Kyla
say hi, hey, Mike,Hikyla, how are you how? I'm
doing pretty good? Thank you. We've heard the story of all the just
I mean tragic events in your familyin the last couple of months since November
(06:43):
second, and that big day andthat horrible day on November second. And
I think that's the thing about whenyou think about a car accident. You're
going somewhere, you're on your wayto the mall or to get gas or
to pick up a prescription, andeverything is mundane and the same, and
then all of a sudden, outof nowhere, life changed that day.
Mike. Yes, it did, certainly did. Yeah, And you lost
(07:10):
Melissa and Junior. His life hasdrastically changed since then two And is Anton
there with you this morning? Yes, it is. He's sitting right here
with me. Anton, good morning. Let me put you on speaking that's
fine, Yes, Anton, goodmorning. Hey, it's Dave over on
(07:35):
KATIEWB along with Kayla. Jenny ishere, and I just want to let
you know that you it's kind ofhard. We let the cat out of
the bag sometimes, and that's fine. We're doing a Christmas wish for your
family, So Kayla is here toread the email that she wrote in that
(07:55):
inspired us to want to help yourfamily out. Kayla, whenever you're ready,
All right, morning, Katie,WB and team. I am reaching
out to your team to help avery dear friend's family. I have known
April and gen for roughly fifteen years. During this time, I've grown to
(08:16):
their family Might and Sue, whowould always let us come over for bonfires
as a group and hang out allnight long. That's how I got to
meet their sister, Melissa and herboys Junior and Anton. Through the years,
watching April and Jen's relationship with theirsister and nephew's grow was the most
amazing bond to the most amazing bonds. Ever, the whole family is filled
(08:37):
with some of the most amazing people'speople you'll ever meet. Unfortunately, things
took a turn for these boys afew years back when they lost their dad.
Melissa, being the person that sheis and the mom that she is,
stepped up even more to the platetaking care of teenage boys with the
help of her parents, Mike andSue, as well as her sister's April
and gen when everything that she needed. This family is a rock to say
(08:58):
the Junior started his senior year inhigh school and Anton started a freshman,
both very big into sports like basketballand football, staying busy with school.
Then November two, twenty twenty three, Junior and Melissa were in a horrible
car accident after Melissa picked up Juniorfrom school. Melissa unfortunately did not make
it and Junior was rushed to thehospital in a coma, fighting for his
(09:24):
life with brain injuries and broken bones. Junior was in a coma for two
weeks since the accident. Sue hasbeen staying every night at the hospital to
be there with her grandson and steppingup way more than she should. The
past week or soon the past weekor so, Junior has been able to
move to a new hospital to getall the therapy needs that he therapy needs
that he needs. He still hasa battle of ahead of him with the
(09:46):
OT and PT, but with thefull army of his friends and family,
he keeps pushing through. It couldbe a while to see a full extent
of his TBI, but it's verydifficult to say if he'll even be back
to Bury was before the accident.Grandparents Sue and Mike literally dropped everything to
take these boys in to ensure Juniorhas the support he needs, as well
(10:07):
as helping Anton to and from schooland what he can do too. Jenn
and April helped their parents as muchas they can and give to give them
a little break from the boys, but Mike and Sue have stepped up as
grandparents while still trying to grieve withthe loss of their oldest daughter. This
family has been through so much andmy heart just breaks for these boys and
just want to be able to givea little bit holiday spirit to them this
(10:28):
year with your help. Nothing thatthey have lost can ever be given back,
but I know Melissa would want themto still have the best holiday that
they could. As she watches overthem during this time and the years to
come. Mike, I just wantto say, I'm so sorry for the
loss of your daughter, Melissa.I'm a dad of four and I've got
(10:50):
two daughters, and you can't evenimagine, you just can't even imagine.
And I'm so sorry that you lostmy life. And I wish there was
something more. And Christmas Wishes,it's it's so it's so hard sometimes because
it's like you feel so inadequate givingsomebody some blankets and a gift card for
(11:13):
Christmas wish when they've gone through somuch. It's like, but that's really
all we can do besides offer love, support and condolences. But that's kind
of what Christmas Wish is, andthat there's a little bit that we can
do to take your mind off ofthings for a while and make it,
you know, make like one cornerof your mouth kind of go up into
a smile. That's kind of whatwe do with Christmas Wish. So we
(11:39):
have some things. Let's start offwith some basic things for you and Sue
and I know with the expense ofyou know, taking on you know,
some extra responsibilities and some family membersand that type of thing, and I'm
going to guess, probably you're missingsome work and there's extra expenses, so
we want to help out with that. We have some We have some gift
(12:01):
cards. We've got a two hundreddollars Visa gift card. What does two
hundred dollars do? You know inthe scheme of things, what does two
hundred dollars do? Yeah, ithelps, and that's really all it does.
It helps. Does it change anything? No, it helps. Four
hundred dollars Cubs gift food Cub Foodsgift card. Again, it's something you're
going to spend money on anyway.Does it change anything, No, it
(12:22):
helps. A five hundred dollars Targetgift card. I'm sure that Anton would
love to go down and blow fivehundred dollars down at Target. And maybe
that's maybe that's what Anton do.You want to blow five hundred dollars down
at Target? So we see that'skind of what we do. Is like
the five hundred dollars doesn't really changea lot, but it might make you
smile. Oh, I'm going toget choked up. And then we have
(12:45):
some other things. We got atwo hundred dollars out Back Steakhouse gift card.
To when you guys are in themood, you want to go,
you go together, You take Sue. Maybe when Junior is home, maybe
he can go down with you. We've got a six month YMCA membership pass
for the family because I know youguys are athletic. That might work out
really well. That's from the YMCA, thanks to those guys. A memory
(13:07):
foam neck pillow for Sue on thoseovernight hospital visits. We heard that might
help out. She spends every night, Mike at the hospital. Yes,
she has been, she's been awarrior. It sounds like yeah. And
you think about this while and thisis so hard to imagine the fathom.
(13:30):
You think about Junior, who isstruggling and getting better and facing that while
mourning your daughter at the same time. So let's move on. You're an
athletic family. Got in a lotof athletic stuff. We got a Spaulding
Legacy basketball and Encore series football, vapor jet, football gloves, Gatorade bottles,
(13:52):
Nike socks, Nike hoodies, AirJordan's shirts, dry Fit shirts,
Jogger sweatpants. And then we gotstuff boring stuff an ton like bed sheets.
Nobody cares about bed sheets. Youdon't care about bed sheets, do
you anton? But you need them, so we're throwing so uh. And
then there's some other fun stuff, just little stuff from everything like bathrobes to
(14:16):
some some other cool stuff to makeyour life a little bit easier. But
I think the one thing about awish like this is it helps, but
also it shows you that there arepeople that care, and there are people
like Kayla uh and people like thepeople who listen to KT but be and
I'm going to guarantee you I'm notthe only one who's starting to tear up
(14:37):
a little bit because you've touched alot of people with your strength and everything
that you're going through, and ourhearts go out to you. Oh there's
one more thing I want to mentionthis one. Holiday Station Stores is our
big partner, and they're going togive you guys gas for a year.
That's gas for a year, whichas you know, can add u the
(15:00):
holiday. They grew up in theTwin Cities. They care about the community
and we're so fortunate to be partneredwith them. So they heard about your
situation and they wanted to help outwith gas for a year. And it's
all going to be delivered by ourbuddy Brandon, who is lurking outside right
now, Mike. He's from collegemuscle movers and there's not a lot of
heavy lifting, but he's going tobring everything inside for you. Okay,
(15:24):
thank you, Dave. This isa wonderful Caleb. Thank you so much.
Absolutely, Mike, I did wantto say one thing, Like you
said, there's been just a tonof support from Junior's High school, Como
Park, and the Cretan Durham Hallcommunity, Willie and Tyna Tens. As
(15:48):
a freshman, I want to thankall those people out there for and everybody.
Everybody's been great, and thank youvery much. You know what,
I'm sure a lot of them arelistening right now, Mike, and they
are I don't want to say happy, but they are. Absolutely. Of
course they're going to say, ofcourse, absolutely, that's what you do.
(16:10):
That's what friends and supporters and classmatesdo. I'm going to let you
go because I'm going to lose it, but I'm gonna first let you say
goodbye to Kayla. So Mike, thanks for letting to share your story.
I know this doesn't make much ofa difference, but I hope you feel
the love. And I hope thatit makes a little bit of a difference
to like make that one corner ofyour mouth go up in a little smile,
because I'm going to guess it's beenhard to smile in the last two
(16:33):
months. It surely has in thishealth day. Thank you so much,
Thank you appreciate it so much. You're welcome, Mike, Mary the merriest
of possible Christmases. And I feelkind of dumb even saying that under those
circumstances, Hey, Anton, youkeep an eye on Grandpa for me,
Okay, absolutely, And that isChristmas wish.
