Speaker 1 (00:00):
A phone call from Charlotte, and I think I know
a little bit about what she's calling about, but I
want to get you on the radio here. Charlotte. First
of all, Happy Monday, hope you had a good weekend.
Thanks for being on KATIEWB. What did you want to
discuss this morning, Charlotte? What's on your mind?

Speaker 2 (00:15):
All right?

Speaker 3 (00:15):
Something is on my mind. So, Mike, I have a
daughter and Grandparents' Day was on Friday, at the end
of the day at her school, and so I'm not
a fan of Grandparents' Day.

Speaker 2 (00:31):
I mean, two of her.

Speaker 3 (00:32):
Grandparents are gone, and two of them live in Kentucky,
and like, you know, we've got nobody to come, so like,
so anyway, I sent her to school. Anyway, she's not gonna.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
Have grandparents there, so I sent her to school. I
thought it would be fine. So I show up at
the end of the day and there were just like
a ton of grandparents everywhere, like you know, having cake
and juice and playing with their grandkids.

Speaker 3 (00:58):
And my daughter was by herself, like in a corner,
coloring and I saw this whole scene and I was like,
this is really sad, like and you know, I don't know,
I just feel like this isn't fair to her and
they should not.

Speaker 2 (01:13):
Have grandparents Day because not everybody's grandparents. Like, I don't
know who made this idea.

Speaker 3 (01:21):
To do this.

Speaker 4 (01:22):
I think it's a sweet idea.

Speaker 1 (01:24):
I think that it sucks for your daughter to like
sit there as a little preschool kid, to not have grandparents.
But they can't cancel Grandparents' Day to accommodate one kid.

Speaker 4 (01:39):
Well, how can they accommodate the one kid though? So
she's not alone in the corner color.

Speaker 1 (01:42):
Then maybe the teacher takes her outside and I don't know,
makes her put her nose on the wall. I don't know.
I'm joking, but.

Speaker 4 (01:48):
Her grandparents are there.

Speaker 1 (01:51):
I don't know, but that's I'll be honest with you, Charlotte.
I got four kids. I've been to parents of Grandparents' Day.
I've been to root beer float Day, Lama Day, a
zoo Day, hot air Balloon Day, all these different days,
and they mean something to all the kids. And it
does suck that your little girl had to sit there
by yourself, But at the same time, all the other

(02:11):
kids had to have such such great joy. They show
up and they're so proud and they want to show
you their cubby, and they usually make you a little something,
usually out of pipe cleaners and popsicle sticks, and it's precious.
But I would like to say, if you're a daycare teacher,
or a mom, or a grandma or whatever, tell me
what you think of Charlotte. I love you, Charlotte. I

(02:32):
know you listen to the show every day, and I
appreciate that. But I think that it's one of those
things where you got to talk to your girl before
school and say, hey, it's Grandparents' Day. You know everybody's
gonna have their grand Your grandparents can't come. They love you,
Maybe they'll FaceTime with you later. I don't know what
do you guys think.

Speaker 4 (02:50):
I didn't have parents.

Speaker 1 (02:52):
Day, so I've never experienced this, but it does make
me very sad for her daughter.

Speaker 4 (02:56):
I don't think that you stop doing it, though.

Speaker 1 (02:59):
I think you just got to figure out a way
to entertain the kids whose grandparents aren't able to make
it or are not alivee anymore. Katie's on the phone, Katie,
so we're talking to Charlotte. Charlotte's you know, we're not
ripping on Charlotte at all. But Charlotte says, Grandparents' Day
sucked for her kid because she didn't have any grandparents
that came. She goes to pick her up, she's in
the corner by herself, coloring Verdy. Else is like giggling

(03:19):
and eating cake and ice cream and juice. And she
says they shouldn't have Grandparents' Day.

Speaker 5 (03:24):
What do you think, Katie, Well, I'm coming from a
single mom. When they have Father's Day and Mother's Day
and Grandparents' Day, I feel they did wrong by putting
her in the corner and not giving her activity because
even on Father's Day as a single mom.

Speaker 3 (03:38):
They would like, have my daughter make me something for Father's.

Speaker 5 (03:41):
Day or make sure she was still included in the
ineclusivity was wrong?

Speaker 1 (03:49):
In inclusively Yes, I agree.

Speaker 3 (03:53):
To you guys.

Speaker 1 (03:54):
No, no, no, I get it. No, to leave her
in the corner was probably just a bad decision, bad
planning from the teachers. Yeah, you know, maybe they didn't
expect it. I don't know, Kelsey, what do you think?

Speaker 6 (04:07):
Hi?

Speaker 7 (04:08):
Yeah, so I am a solo parent myself.

Speaker 3 (04:12):
Cariored my son's fathers and then the pictures and when
they do like.

Speaker 7 (04:15):
Father's Day thing her parents Day just with dad, I
will go in replacement of a dad and the school
has no problems with it. I think if the school
just asked the school to communicate with you or let
them know the situation, and then you can go in
replacement of the grandparents. That way your daughter at least
had somebody there.

Speaker 1 (04:34):
Yeah, and I think the school would be like totally.
It's like, okay, yeah, you tell your little girl like okay,
a little Brianna, me or your grandparents love you. They're
in Kentucky, they can't make it, but mom's gonna come by.
I'll be there, and then they could give you the
pipe cleaner popsicle stick toy that they've made. We got
a bunch of text messages.

Speaker 6 (04:52):
Maybe first we got some yeah, some people who are
kind of cranky saying, oh no, another parent who thinks
the world revolves around their child eye roll emoji. But
a lot of people are saying that their schools have
it called Special Friends Day. That way, if they don't
have grandparents, they can still bring a special friend instead,
like an aunt or an uncle. This person says, when

(05:15):
I was a teacher, we had a grandparents Day where
we let the kids without a grandparent be adopted by
another grandparent.

Speaker 4 (05:21):
There are they kid from jobs for the teacher.

Speaker 6 (05:26):
And then some people, a lot of people say, to
be fair, some kids don't have parents, so on Father's
Day or Mother's Day, whatever little craft that they're doing,
that they'd have to do that by themselves too.

Speaker 4 (05:37):
This person's the day, oh, I only had grandparents.

Speaker 1 (05:40):
So a lots of different stories. Kathy is a kindergarten teacher.
And in case you just turned the radio on, we
were talking to Charlotte. Charlotte listens every morning and it
was grandparents Day the other day at daycare and her grandparents,
the little girl's grandparents, they're either gone or they live
in Kentucky. So she goes to pick her daughter up.
The grandparents were there having a great time and sitting

(06:02):
in those little teeny tiny chairs and having cake and juice,
and her daughters in the corner coloring, and she said
they shouldn't have a Grandparent's Day because it's going to
leave out kids with their grandparents. Kathy, how do you
handle it?

Speaker 7 (06:15):
So as a teacher, the world has changed quite a
bit over the years, and so we run into this
with you know, people who kids who don't have fathers,
or kids who don't have mothers or different caretakers taking
care of children. And so I believe that instead of

(06:35):
eliminating it, because there are children who still have grandparents
and fathers and mothers, we should we should celebrate the
caretakers in these children's lives. And so I, as a teacher,
find other ways to accommodate those children. So for Grandparents' Days,
you do like a little class songs for everybody, so

(07:01):
that there are group activities that all the grandparents can
see that it's not just about individual kids with their
individual grandparents. For for Mother's Days, I say, there are
many people that act as your mother's. So if you
don't have a mother, or your mother doesn't live with you,

(07:22):
we will make a craft for the person that does
care for you.

Speaker 1 (07:26):
I got an idea. Here's what I would do if
I was in daycare. I would teach those kids to
clean up, you know what I mean, Like while all
these body's got their grandparents or whatever, and I'd give
like a swiffer. Yeah, and I have really a little
broom and a swiffer and haven't polished the hallway. And
then while everbody's having cake and ice cream, I'd say
go outside. You can look in the window, the window

(07:50):
because your life is hard, Jenny, life is hard, and
I think that it's good for a four year old
to look in the window at the other kids having
fun with your grandparents. I'm just saying, yeah, and then
when the teacher sees him doing it, you go get
back out there and bowing that law. My gosh, you ridiculous.

(08:10):
All right, So what's our final bit of advice for
for Charlotte. What do you guys want to say?

Speaker 4 (08:14):
Fly Grandma and grandpa here from Kentucky.

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Here you go?

Speaker 2 (08:18):
Thing you do?

Speaker 4 (08:18):
I don't know, request special friend day instead.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
That's a lot of people texting say that special friend
day instead? Is that what the text are saying?

Speaker 5 (08:26):
Yeah?

Speaker 4 (08:26):
Special frienday?

Speaker 6 (08:27):
Or like just send somebody else that's not a grandparent
any or like a grand friend.

Speaker 4 (08:31):
It doesn't have to be their grand.

Speaker 1 (08:33):
That's a good idea. Some like older person who lives
down the street, or they're entrewaring it.

Speaker 4 (08:38):
You're busy or you're not busy, right, you all.

Speaker 1 (08:39):
Go, I'll go. Yeah, I'll tell you what next year
on Grandparents' Day, Charlotte, I'll come by and I'll have
cake and juice with your kid. Okay, Great, thank you, Charlotte,
