After a series of streakers interrupted the opening round of Super Rugby Pacific over the weekend, Matt Heath and Tyler Adams asked what the motivation is and whether there's a solution to it.

That prompted Aaron Bain to call, one of the infamous streakers who interrupted a Bledisloe Cup test in 2002 covered in Vodafone branding.

While he says he wasn't paid by the Australian telco for the stunt, he revealed there was a deal that if he made it to the field he would get paid $500, and if they got on TV they would get $1000, and all their fines would be paid for.

23 years later, he told Matt and Tyler that he had a a good time.

"I'll tell you that it was funny, everybody knew me, my grandparents were proud."

And his only regret?

"I regret that we lost the game."

You're listening to a podcast from News Talk sed be
follow this and our wide range of podcasts now on iHeartRadio.

Speaker 2 (00:16):
We're talking about streaking on the back of the opening
of the Super Rugby competition. A lot of streakers.

Speaker 3 (00:22):
So currently under the Events Management Act, a conviction provides
conviction to imprisonment for a term not exceeding three months
or a fine not exceeding five thousand dollars. But you know,
a pretty light approach is generally taken to streaking. So
what do you think about Let's go to the phones. Aaron,
Welcome to the show. How are you today?

Speaker 4 (00:43):
Good things matter?

Speaker 3 (00:44):
How are you very good? You want to talk about
a blooderslow cup streaker?

Speaker 4 (00:48):
Okay, yeah, was sorry.

Speaker 3 (00:51):
I said you. Oh yeah, no, I'm saying that you
want to talk about a Bloder's low cup streaker.

Speaker 4 (00:56):
Yeah, that was me. Votophone streaker.

Speaker 3 (00:59):
You were you were the streaker. Oh so hang on up.
Took us through this, this this situation, the voteraphone streaker.
What do you mean by that?

Speaker 4 (01:09):
There was two of us, have done it two?

Speaker 2 (01:12):
Ah?

Speaker 3 (01:14):
Yeah, breaking up.

Speaker 4 (01:16):
We had votaphone PXT written on on ourself and yeah
we lost that game.

Speaker 2 (01:23):
That's right. And you was it you or your mate
held up Andrew Mutens as part of that What was
that sorry one of you held up Andrew Murtens?

Speaker 4 (01:31):
Is that right?

Speaker 2 (01:36):
Right? We've gotta we've gotta, we've got a terrible line era,
and we really want to check you a little bit more.
Just move to the left or right and we'll keep
we'll keep talking with you. Hopefully that comes right. So clearly,
clearly that was a corporate stunt era. And and what did
you get for your your pardon streaking?

Speaker 4 (01:56):
Well, I can tell you I wasn't paid by Vota Phone,
but yes it was paid and there was a deal there.
We were if we made it on the field, we're
going to get five hundred bucks. If we made it
on TV, we get a thousand bucks. And at the
time I was living at Manly on Modern Beaches. They
pay for TAXI paid for the picket, pay for a

(02:19):
hotel room and yeah, you think to pay hotel room
paid theirselves up and a week ago.

Speaker 3 (02:27):
So who paid you.

Speaker 4 (02:30):
The promotions company at the time, right, and so.

Speaker 3 (02:34):
Voter Phones promotional company.

Speaker 4 (02:36):
Yeah, wow, they didn't stud pay for it.

Speaker 2 (02:39):
So how much did you get in the end? You
said five hundred forgetting on the field. Was there a
bonus if you managed to survive on the field for
long enough? I'll tell you another another grand Yeah.

Speaker 4 (02:51):
Yeah, we've got a grand all up on my fine
to pay for.

Speaker 3 (02:53):
So twenty three years after that event, how do you
feel about it?

Speaker 4 (02:59):
Ah, it was a good time. I'll tell you that
it was. Everybody knew me. My grandparents are proud.

Speaker 3 (03:09):
So can you see can you see it from the
stadium's point of view and securities point of view that
that it's that it can't be allowed to happen regularly.

Speaker 4 (03:20):
No. Yeah, And at the time it was only two
hundred dollars fine for entering the field. Now two thousands
or five thousand they put it up to straight away.

Speaker 3 (03:31):
Did you get a ban from stadiums? No?

Speaker 4 (03:35):
I was out there probably three or four weeks later
the Warriors play. Did you care?

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Did you keep your pants on it? So you do
you have any regrets?

Speaker 4 (03:52):
I regret that we lost the game.

Speaker 2 (03:55):
Yeah, that's a big one.

Speaker 4 (03:57):
At the time we were winning, but we didn't disrupt
the game either. We ran on when it was a penalty,
so we didn't actually disrupt the game, you know. So
disrupt the you're an idiot.

Speaker 3 (04:10):
Yeah, yeah, I mean, I mean that that sort of
happened at Eden Park. Guy was sort of getting very
close to the back line and that annoys me because that's,
as you say, Tyler, that's main character syndrome. You know,
people are here watch the rugby. They're not here to
watch your bear butt.

Speaker 4 (04:28):
You're going to do it when it's a break in
the rugby, like an injury time or something like that.
Do not sit the game. People aren't there too, aren't
there to watch you.

Speaker 2 (04:38):
What I means to your mate. He got arrested, didn't he?

Speaker 4 (04:42):
Yeah? Yeah, yeah, he got charged because he refused to
give his name. He wasn't my mate showing him that night,
but he refused. He'd send the night and and the
girl for the police station.

Speaker 3 (04:55):
And the nerd or did they cover them up again?

Speaker 2 (05:00):
That's very generous for them, But yeah, I mean did
that did that stay on his record at all? You know,
did it go to court?

Speaker 4 (05:06):
Because he was caught. He court, He got fined. See,
I only got fined seven hundred dollars, was two hundred
dollars entering a playing field and five hundred dollars for
behaving in a decent offensive manner. They were just instant tickets.
There's no record of it. She went to court and
got charged. So he's got those two charges on his ledger.

Speaker 3 (05:27):
Yeah, you do you think do you think that you're streaking?
Was why Andrew Mrtens missed the cack?

Speaker 2 (05:34):
No, No, what did Mert say? Mertz would be the
difference than me.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
He was told me to bug her off. Somebody did.

Speaker 3 (05:48):
All right, So you know you're you're one of New
Zealand's most famous streakers. But but you you can see
now that there are problems with streaking.

Speaker 4 (05:59):
There is when you get like three or four people
doing at a different times, all at the same time
or whatever, and there she upset in the game. It's
just stupid.

Speaker 3 (06:06):
Yeah, And from a security go perspective, they don't necessarily
want your tackle in their face while they tackle you, almost.

Speaker 1 (06:16):
Not necessarily, as I think.

Speaker 2 (06:17):
Yeah, absolutely, they don't want that.

Speaker 3 (06:19):
It's not weather in the game.

Speaker 4 (06:21):
Wonder sport. You probably don't want to be maked either.
It's a wind of sport. Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 2 (06:25):
Well, Aaron, very good to chat with you, and thank
you for being so upfront in frank you, thank you,
thank you.

Speaker 3 (06:32):
So much, Aaron, I don't know about that.

Speaker 2 (06:34):
So what did he how much money did he get
after he paid his fine? I think he ended up
with about five hundred bucks to show your tackle in
front of what forty thousand people to Blitterslow, I don't
know if that's worth it.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Yeah, well, I mean i'd ever do it.

Speaker 1 (06:52):
How much?

Speaker 2 (06:52):
How much would it take for.

Speaker 4 (06:54):
Me to do it?

Speaker 3 (06:54):
Yeah, there'll be no amount of money for me to
do it. A million dollars, oh, probably a million.

Speaker 2 (06:58):
Yeah, yeah, we can put the hat around you come
on New Zealand. That's less than a dollar apiece.

Speaker 3 (07:07):
I just think yeah, I mean if you if you're
upsetting at the game, then it's just not on.

Speaker 1 (07:14):
