Speaker 1 (00:09):
You're listening to a podcast from news Talks It be
follow this and our wide range of podcast now on iHeartRadio.
Speaker 2 (00:16):
News Talks it Be Well. You might have heard her
on the show yesterday talking about that wild weather in
the South. The very talented Leanne Malcolm, a renowned reporter
and news presenter. She's now singing a very different tune,
quite literally, embracing a long how dream to write and
release her own music. She's celebrating the launch of her
latest album, First Rodeo. We'll give you those details shortly,
but a pleasure to welcome Leanne Malcolm back to the show.
Speaker 3 (00:38):
Hi, Leanne, Hey, how are you too?
Speaker 4 (00:41):
Very good? Do we call you Leanne or Gina in
your musical interviews?
Speaker 3 (00:45):
It's so schizophrenic, it's awful. I kind of had this
wacky idea when I started that. I thought, oh, well,
maybe it's good to kind of distance myself from my past,
and it might also help give some confidence when you're
performing any and you sort of you know, so you're
a different person to what you were. So that was
where a gena came in. So you YouTube, guys, I
don't mind well speaking.
Speaker 4 (01:06):
Of distancing yourself with your past. Just take you back
there for a second. How different are the worlds of
music and news reporting, like.
Speaker 3 (01:14):
Talking to yous so so incredibly different, And yet I
was thinking, you know, I was thinking about this, and
I thought, there is there is a correlation because the
common link is when you're reporting or your news reading,
you're telling a story, aren't you so? And music tells
the story and songwriting tells a story. So there is
(01:35):
that in common. But I think in every other way
it's fastly different. And news it's factual, it's serious, it's
black and white. You know, you're you're writing about events,
Whereas when you're writing a song, as you know, Matt,
you're using different language. You can also repeat things for effect,
(01:56):
as I'm doing blood Less for quite a lot, like
it's like, you know, I'm not okay, And it's like
it's been a real, a really interesting learning curve to
see how you can play with words as a songwriter.
Speaker 4 (02:07):
Tell us about First Radio your album, would you describe
it as old country?
Speaker 3 (02:12):
Yeah, I think that's the best description, if you have
to give it one. Some people would call it Americana.
I don't know about that term. I'm not quite sure
what that means. And sometimes when you do give things
a genre, it's really it's really odd because it sort
of a stricts you awey bit. But I think I
think definitely yeah, my leanings and my love I do
(02:33):
have a bird of a thing about country music. It's
blame my mum actually, because she was a massive country
music fan and we had we were exposed to a
lot of Johnny Cash and Hank Williams and lots of
people like that growing up.
Speaker 4 (02:46):
Where can people get hold of tickets to your gig
at Big Fan in Auckland and get hold of the
album first Radio.
Speaker 3 (02:53):
Under the Radar it is the best place to get
the tickets and they're thirty bucks. But believe me you
are going to see a really terrific band. And well,
Rob Murphy from Australia is coming over and I've got
Elmo Jones from Aldatarhi christ Church who's just done ands
with Adam Hadaway and the Haunters and Tom Sam Maxwell,
so it should be a great night. And the record
(03:14):
is available at Flying Out in Auckland actually and also
Relics Toneden for Southern listeners so oh and on band
camp too, So yeah, appreciate any support that'd be great, Liamn.
