Morgana O'Reilly is one of New Zealand's most successful acting export.
She's wild Fans and the cult comedy horror house Bound,
and was the lead in the Emmy winning series Inside.
This year, she's appeared in the third series of the
international super hit The White Lotus and starred in Paramount
spine Chilling playing Gracie Darling. It is a great pleasure
(00:52):
to welcome morgana O'Reilly on for our Christmas catch ups
with kick Ass Kiwi's MORGANA.
Speaker 4 (00:58):
How are you, Kavda.
Speaker 5 (01:00):
I'm really good. I need like a little bio like
that every morning. I just need to hear somebody intro
me to the day and it's like, ah god, it
sounds great.
Speaker 4 (01:09):
We can record that for you, MORGANA the plenty time
you want it.
Speaker 5 (01:12):
Would be great. Then that's brilliant. Thank you.
Speaker 6 (01:15):
We're gonna Like millions of others around the world. I
was a huge fan of Whitelatus and was so stoked
and impressed when I heard that you'd got the gig.
Were you were you a fan of the show beforehand?
And tell us how you heard that you that you've
got this huge international job.
Speaker 5 (01:32):
Oh my gosh. I was such a fan of the show.
I love that show. And so when the audition came through,
I center off the NDA, you know, so far. My
agent was like, I've never seen an NBA come back well,
you know. And then when I was hearing for the audition,
actually I listened to the soundtrack kind a lot, you know,
(01:52):
that iconic get Me in the bag, you know, get
me in the get me the zone. And then it
was all quite straightforward from there, which is often is
not straightforward. It's often like back and forth and back
and forth, and like lots of I was so used
to sitting in anguish for months, but then I had
(02:15):
some really nice feedback when I was I was at
a friend's wedding and I felt like I needed to
stop the wedding and said, the White Lights casting team
liked my tape. I didn't stop the wedding, and I
just felt amazing and figured I'd just digne out on that.
For years, I'd be like, you know, White Loadus had
come out, and I'd I'd say to my friends, I
auditioned for that and they liked that, so watch out.
(02:39):
And then two weeks later I got a call on
the Saturday morning, because that would have been Friday afternoon
in the States, and yeah, my agent said, bless, he
shouldn't be around the bush. Good morning. How I got, Okay,
we've heard about White Loatus and they are going to
offer you the part. And all I remember saying is
are you sure? And shoving so happy, and I was
(03:02):
calling my husband. He's a director, which is not how
we met. No shade to anyone who goes that way anyway,
but he was on set at the time, and so
I was. I tried to call him in the morning.
I knew he'd be in the second it, so I
was trying my luck. And then he ticked it back
and are you all good? And I texted him I've
(03:23):
heard about White Lotus and he kicks it back a
question mark, and I ticked it back, you want to
go to Thailand?
Speaker 4 (03:33):
It was so coud what a beautiful response and moment.
Speaker 3 (03:36):
So when you first read that script more Ganner, what
was your first thoughts? I mean, such a brilliantly written show, dark, funny, unsettling.
Were you blowing away the first time you read that script?
Speaker 2 (03:50):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (03:50):
Yeah, it was amazing reading it. Because also I have
to say, like I got offered the pat and then
I thought, for about a week while we were waiting
for kind of the proper deal, you know, the proper
offer to come through, I thought, I think it might
be a scam. I think it was a scam because
this has happened before. There's a really good podcasts actually
called Chameleon is it called Caameleian No Hollywood con Queen,
(04:12):
and this is real. I knew some people who got
hit by this. A person in Indonesia that would call
agents and be like, they've got this huge part of
the big show that just you pay for the tickets
over and we will reimburse. It's very strange scam. But
so when I finally got the contract, I was like, okay,
that maybe that's good. And then when I finally got
(04:34):
the scripts, I was like, okay, this is a very
elaborate scam. And I read the scripts and it was
just amazing. It was like watching The White Lotus. You know,
it was just so when you because I knew the
show and it was yeah, glorious. And also I didn't
necessarily know what my character was, you know, so I
(04:55):
was reading it each at the start of each of
the episodes. You know, I actually just searched my character's
name to see how often she was popping up. I
know that sounds really that's shallow, but also hilariously because
my character's name is Pam Luisa. Pam shows that a lot. No, no, no, here,
(05:18):
I am no. No.
Speaker 6 (05:23):
Well that's kind of a coincidence in the end, isn't it,
because in the show, obviously there was the scam agent
in the scam, the whole scam movie thing. Now, look,
you're so good on the show, and look at key
we accent always sticks out on American shows, but yours
was so good. Were you adding any sauce to the
accent or was that just you talking normally?
Speaker 5 (05:45):
Oh no, no, no, I actually I actually she's Australian.
She's Australian, but I know so when I audition, she
is an Australian character, and with this very close. She
(06:06):
was an Australian character when I audition for her right
and then I got the role and I said to
Mike White, how would you feel about me making her
a Keywi much more niche She hadn't had a keyw
in the show, and he just went, oh, sure, do
whatever you like. I I realize that he didn't know
the weight of that decision, what that meant on a
(06:29):
cultural basis, how different we are. And I pained over
it for weeks, and I would do little bits for
friends where I would sort of try her out as
a key We go, what do you think is funnier
this or this, this or this, and everyone was like,
God damn, it's all these funnier And I also felt like,
(06:52):
and maybe I'm native. It shows how much money I
actually make. But I was like, I just don't feel
like we have that kind of affluent wellness in New Zealand.
Like for me, I was like, We've got like hippie
raglin wellness, whereas Australia has that real, like high end
(07:13):
throw money at your problems wellness.
Speaker 6 (07:16):
Yeah.
Speaker 5 (07:17):
Yeah, that's an Australian space. And it was fun and
maybe that's my I mean, I love Australians and I've
lived I've lived over there a lot and for a
long time, so I felt like it was my old
flash ribbing of Australia.
Speaker 6 (07:34):
Well, I supposed to the New Zealand. You know, the
Australian ecccene is the New Zealand acccene with a little
bit of source. Have you been have you been taking phones.
Speaker 5 (07:42):
Off you just squint your ears, and have you been.
Speaker 6 (07:46):
Taking phones off people in your private life and looking
after them since since the role?
Speaker 5 (07:52):
Oh my gosh. Yeah, it's a great way to make friends.
You just take people's phones away. Look, but I can
tell you that I now charge my phone on the
other side of my bedroom. I don't have it nixed
to my bed anymore, which makes me read books again
and I feel completely I feel so sanctamonious about it.
I'm like, guys, you've got to take your phone away
(08:13):
from next to your beers. You do, it's good for you.
Speaker 6 (08:18):
Well, we'll end up being such an important plot point
in the stress of the people that needed their phones
but also didn't need their phones, and how helpful it was.
I don't I mean, I don't spoiler.
Speaker 5 (08:28):
That's how I knew that I wasn't going to get
a cut out because I was like, well she's part
of a pretty vital see.
Speaker 4 (08:38):
So we're Gana.
Speaker 3 (08:39):
You've now worked across comedy, drama, theater, TV and film,
of course, how do you shift your approach between those
forms and do you have a favorite.
Speaker 5 (08:52):
I look at them all. I look at Every job
that I do is like working in a different kitchen
making different food. And of course you just I want
variety as much as possible. So I love all of
them because I love food. If you know, if you're
enjoying my analogy, yes, so I will. Any type of
(09:15):
performing is just delicious, and especially if they're as variety.
You know, you can get overloaded with one thing and
go I just need to I want to do some
stupid comedy, and then you do stupid comedy for a
bit and you're like, jeez, I need some anguish.
Speaker 4 (09:32):
Yeah, it's a beautiful analogy.
Speaker 5 (09:34):
Yeah everything, Thank you. I've been working on it, working
on it over the airs.
Speaker 6 (09:40):
I'm good friends with someone that you took over there
as an emotional support creature. And of course famously on
White Lotus. Just to go back to the big fan,
everyone stays in the resort, and you know, the actors
are living in that era area, and so how was
that how how was just the experience of the show
(10:00):
outside of the show, that going down to breakfast, the
hanging out with everyone, that that whole part of it
must have been great.
Speaker 5 (10:08):
Look, I'm not gonna lie. Sometimes it was really stressful,
especially it's start. It was like, oh my gosh, like,
I uh, this is There's a lot to take on
when you first arrive. There's obviously you're sharing a hotel,
and a hotel which who which level of opulence is
beyond anything I've ever experienced, Like there's very literally a
(10:31):
very small percentage of people who can afford to go
somewhere like that. I think my villa that they gave me,
which I'm sure is like the smallest, was five thousand
dollars a night. That is insane to me. So you're
dealing with that. When you first get in, there's kind
of like awe of this space, and then it's filled
(10:51):
the same people. And usually fancy hotels are just filled
with annoying people, but that one was filled with amazing,
like very famous, cool people. So there was quite a
bit of imposter syndrome for me just to get it over.
But by the end I felt like I could just
(11:14):
say were beautiful people, and I got to just enjoy
their company. So by the time I went back up
with my cousin, who is your friend come? And then
by that point I felt like I get to be
really cool and be like, oh, Jack, this is my
friend Amy, Oh this is Carrie Hi his So that's nice.
(11:36):
It's interesting, good process. Definitely.
Speaker 6 (11:38):
It's interesting that you bring up the sweets because I
listened to this podcast with Walton Goggins and he was
talking about how sometimes even though all his spiritual work,
he's very shallow and he stopped off at an art
exhibition in Paris before he went to the Shooting White
Lotus and he said, while he was looking at this art,
he was worrying that he would miss out on the
good sweets at the on the white loads at the
(11:59):
White Lotus resort.
Speaker 3 (12:00):
Oh my gosh, what a beautiful man about that news
doorgzb We are talking to morgana O'Reilly, one of this
country's most successful acting exports, as part of our Christmas
cat Chops with Ka kass Keywis. Thanks again for your time,
will ganna.
Speaker 5 (12:13):
Oh it's lovely to be here.
Speaker 1 (12:15):
Now.
Speaker 6 (12:16):
You know you've got a bunch of projects. You've just
been working with the great New Zealand of Tom Sainsbury.
So what are you looking forward to in twenty twenty six?
Speaker 1 (12:27):
Oh?
Speaker 5 (12:27):
Well, I can't wait for that series to come out.
It comes out on February ninth as a Sky original
and it's Tom Sainsbury's series based on his podcast series
Small Town Scandal, and it is so funny and charming
and ridiculous. I knew I was going to be doing
(12:47):
some press for it, so I made sure to get
a few copies, like a few of the episodes, and
then I demanded very dramatically. We're not more dramatically. I
think I need the whole series just to be able
to really know what I'm advertising back. Really, it was
just because I mean, I love it. I love it
(13:07):
really and I feel like the world is really ready
for some stilly So that's coming out. And then I've
got a show called Bust Up coming out, which is
in sort of like far Go tone. I play a
police officer, so I feel like a police officer. Now.
I met a police officer the other day. A friend
of my kid's dad is a police officer and he
(13:30):
told me he was a cop and I was like,
I just I just said, you just played a cop
and he was like, oh, you're an ector. Yeah, And
that's really found that. It's like good crime solving mysteries
each episode with a beautiful love story, oh gorgeous, A
lot of exciting thing.
Speaker 3 (13:51):
So looking forward to that. Right here comes the Christmas questions.
More gana, what does summer look like for you?
Speaker 5 (13:58):
Listen, it's a backyard summer for me this year. I
really am focusing on that. We've got a dog in
twenty twenty five this year, and we love her a bit,
and so I think we're slightly more homebound this summer.
But we got one of those above ground pools and
it's hits, So the tramps out, the pools up, and
(14:20):
I have flowers, sun files growing. It's gonna be great.
A bit of a road trip here and there and
some camping.
Speaker 4 (14:27):
But yeah, that sounds epic. That's amazing.
Speaker 6 (14:29):
And what's on the menu on Christmas Day?
Speaker 5 (14:33):
I think then I have perfected for cutsure bread. So
I'm going to be shoving that down my family's throat.
And I'm also going to attempt to make a lemon
sallow terra missu. Oh that's the Gulf.
Speaker 4 (14:47):
Yeah, lemon Cello's big at the moment, is it? I
think it's going to be the next country.
Speaker 3 (14:52):
Yeah, you heard it here first. Hey, this is a
curly one for you. What was the best present you
ever gave or received?
Speaker 5 (15:00):
Ah, this is such an interesting question because that funnily enough,
I feel like I remember the presence that I gave
the most, which I think is not because it says
how much, you know, Christmas is about the giving. I
gave a personalized guest her board where I swapped out
all the pictures for people in their life. Nice. That's
(15:23):
a good one, really good? All right?
Speaker 6 (15:27):
Real or fake Christmas tree for you? MORGANA oh look.
Speaker 5 (15:31):
I mean the smell of a real one is so amazing. Yes, yes, yes,
all of that. But we inherited a fake one from
my mother in law a few years ago and it's
like a classic old farmer's one and it actually is awesome.
It comes out every year and she likes up gorgeous
and I think that'll be us for a week while. Yet.
Speaker 4 (15:52):
Yeah, love that. What are you most grateful for this year?
Speaker 5 (15:57):
I am really grateful that I get to live in
New Zealand and work overseas. I'm really grateful that I
get to come back to this absolute paradise of a
country and rave mckit's here.
Speaker 4 (16:11):
What a great answer, Yeah, beautiful.
Speaker 6 (16:13):
That makes me feel good. And finally, MORGANA, thank you
so much for your time at the end of the
year like this. But your fave Christmas song?
Speaker 5 (16:21):
Okay, this is a big question, but every year on Christmas,
my husband insists on playing Dolly Patteran and Kenny Rodgers'
Christmas album. Yes, and I have a love hate relationship
with it, but I also love it because he really
it's so cheesy and he really doesn't. It plays on
(16:44):
repeat and it's intense and it's intensely happy. But my
favorite is from that album, and it's called Winter Wonderland
slash Sleigh Ride and it's really eighties and very American,
very Coca Cola.
Speaker 4 (17:01):
You know what. A brilliant Yeah, brilliant choice.
Speaker 6 (17:03):
Well, that's good and it's good for us to play
something that we haven't absolutely punished so far this year already,
So good on you.
Speaker 4 (17:10):
Yeah, yes, yep, you're mixing it up, MORGANA.
Speaker 3 (17:12):
We're going to play that song for you now, but
thank you so much for having a chat with us.
We're massive fans of Use, so go well in twenty
twenty six. We know you will and have a great
Christmas in summer and we'll catch up next year.
Speaker 5 (17:24):
Thank you, Midici Hemsy.
Speaker 4 (17:27):
That is morgana O.
