(05:15):
us right now as invest billionaire investorwho is supposed to be on the Titanic,
but to thank God he and hisson would not. Jay Bloom and
his son's Sean was scheduled to jointhe voyage to see the Titanic, and
by the grace of God, hewas spirit from that going. So Jay,
thank you for joining us, Thankyou for having me. Thank you.
First, we're very pleased that you'rehere with us. Now. You
(05:39):
were invited for fee. I thinkit's two hundred and fifty thousand dollars per
person to join Ocean Gate CEO Scottand Rush, who was unfortunately killed in
that tragedy, to participate in thissubmarine to visit the Titanic. How did
you know Stockton Rush, and what'syour connection and how did it all come
about that you were supposed to goon this submarine ride. So I was
(06:00):
introduced to Stockton about a year agoand he told me about Ocean Gate and
what he's doing. He told methat less than two hundred people have ever
been to the dive set, andmore people have been in space than have
been down to the wreckage. Myson, who's now twenty, has been
a longtime fan of the Titanic story, and I thought this would be exciting
(06:26):
for me and it would be anexciting thing to do for my son.
So I told Stockton I was interested. We talked about it kind of conceptually
from a year ago until about Februaryof this year, and then February of
this year we started talking about pickinggates. Now, did you Obviously your
son did some diligence in his homeworkand he found out things that were disturbing
(06:47):
about it. But did you haveany inkling when you were talking to him
that there were some problems, somemajor problems dealing with this submarine. Initially,
No, there was. He toutedthe safety of what he was doing.
He said, the industry has thirtyfive years of history submersibles, non
(07:10):
military, non davy, with zerozero accidents, zero injuries, much less
fatalities. So he said, it'sperfectly safe and you know, an exciting
adventure and he was paid in avery rosy picture. So what changed?
(07:30):
So what did your son shown discoverthat made you decide maybe we should not
be going on this trip, onthis voyage at the bottom of the sea.
Well, it was a series ofdiscoveries. He told a friend about
it, and his friend said thatI thought it was a bit crazy,
and they started to research it.They found a video where Stockton was discussing
that he controlled the submarine with avideo game controller, a consumer grade Logitech
(07:56):
video game controller, and that kindof spooked my son, and rightfully,
and then he looked a little furtherand he found that he used a carbon
fiber hull. And when he researchedthat carbon fiber, when it's cycled through
stress and pressure, gets compromised, elaminates and shatters like glass. So he
(08:16):
thought that was a terrible decision. You know, carbon fiber is supposed to
be strong and lightweight, but inthe submarine, weight isn't a consideration.
So he wasn't quite sure why heused fiber, especially since it's so brittle
and susceptible that pressure cycles. Andwe found that the h An employee raised
concerns because there is a viewing port, a viewing window that the manufacturer rated
(08:41):
to fifteen hundred meters in depth, and the dive we were going on was
four thousand five three times what themanufacturer spec was. And Stockton's responses that
the history is so over engineered thatthere's a lot of wasted money, and
yes, the spect for fifteen hundredmeters and we're going forty five, but
(09:01):
it's good to ten thousand meters,so we're still in that safe range.
And that's kind of how he viewedeverything that because the industry is so over
the engineered for safety that at somepoint safety becomes a waste of money.
Now, I read a report thatsome of the previous trips were, by
the grace of God, didn't endup in a catastrophe. For example,
(09:22):
that one of his last strips madethe last one before this one where the
engine was put him backwards. Right, I mean, I don't know that
came up in the research, butthe engine put them backwards. That's not
a very self assuring manifestation this isgoing to be going well. I mean,
the engine backwards, of all thethings. That's that's real crazy.
(09:45):
Well, and then we found thatthe hatch is attached by eighteen bolts.
Actually there are eighteen holes for eighteenbolts. He generally used sixteen or seventeen
because eighteen he decided it was notnecessary. And it can only be opened
from the outside. So if youhad any kind of issue and you surfaced,
you're still stuck in an airtight submarinewith the inability to open it to
(10:09):
escape. The escape the vessel.Wow. By the way, eighteen is
high in Hebrews, so he didn'twant to use a letter high. I
find that pretty interesting. High islife. And so what did what did
the rest of your family think aboutwhen you when you originally said you were
going to go? What were theirreaction? Well, my son initially was
excited until he got some more information. My wife thought it was very adorable
(10:33):
that I thought I was going tobe able to go. Did she want
to go too? She did notwant to go. She did not want
me going. She did want whilemy son going. But okay, but
you said you want to go.It's a time to experience father and son
bonding. Yeah, I thought Ithought it would be nice. So UM
in February was starting to raise theseconcerns, and I shared my son's concerns.
(10:54):
So I questioned Stockton about the safetyand he flew out in March to
meet me, and he took methrough the Titanic exhibition at Luxur. We
walked the exhibition talking about what theexcursion would look like, and then we
had lunch, and over lunch wetalked about what to expect, and then
we touched on the safety concerns andhe was fairly dismissive, and he actually
(11:18):
flew out. He told me hewas flying his plane out to meet me
in that he would be meeting mein North Las Vegas, which I thought
was a strange choice. Most peoplewhen they come here at Land at mc
karen, it's now Harry read Internationalor in Henderson Executive. So why do
you think he supposed he wanted togo there as opposed to where people normally
go. I asked him that, and he told me that he was flying
(11:41):
in on a two seat experimental aircraftthat he built. Now, I'm a
pilot, and that is an entirelydifferent risk appetite than I have. I
wouldn't fly in an experimental aircraft. So and then I thought about it,
and I thought, here, wehave a gentleman flying in on a two
seater experimental aircraft that he built totake me on a five seater experimental sub
(12:05):
that he built to the bottom ofthe Atlantic Ocean. And started to really
rethink this. So in April heoffered me seats on May trip. There
are two dates in May, andhe offered to discount the tickets by one
hundred thousand dollars each. So it'stwo hundred and fifty thousand dollars normally what
he was charging. So he wasgoing to give you a discount, so
you'll pay only one hundred and fiftythousand per person. Correct, And he
(12:28):
did he think that would entice youto come getting a discount. He was
addressing the wrong concern. He thoughtit was a financial reason why you didn't
want to go. Well, ifI think I'm gonna there's a good chance
I'm going to die on this trip, dropping the price is not going to
entice me to go. Right. He was focused on the wrong or two.
But did he address the other safetyconcerns that you were bringing up.
No, he just minimized them bysaying that, you know, his industry
(12:52):
way over engineers and waste a lotof money and over engineering for safety.
Now, from what I understand,by the way, the Ocean Gates websites
still promoting future trips for two hundredand fifty thousand dollars, I don't think
it's ever been taken down from thecompany. I think that was prior to
this tragedy, and just nobody tookit down. This all happened so suddenly.
Now when you heard that the implosionof this submarine. What was your
(13:20):
reaction. Well, it was likethe top news story in the world for
a period of time. So everywhereI looked, whether it was online or
social media or the news on television, I kept seeing the news of the
implosion, and they would put upthe pictures of the passengers, and there
were three individual pictures of three individualpeople, and then a fourth picture of
(13:41):
this father and son. It's Pakistanibusinessman and his son that took my son
and my seat. And all Icould think of is, but for the
grace of God, that would beour picture on the television, my family
talking to the press. So it'sreally an earing feeling. Did it have
any impact on you spiritually religiously?Knowing that you could have gone through this
(14:03):
and by only by the saving braceof God you didn't go. It made
me think about what's really important.I reflected a bit, and I put
up a Facebook post of my messageof my text messages with Stockton Rush,
and I said, uh, Ifinished my post with the thought that tomorrow
is not promised, and uh,you know, I'm changing the priorities in
(14:24):
my life. Yeah, so everybodygets so emotional and so upset, so
passionate about you know, politics andand you know these petty squabbles that really
don't matter. So I'm kind ofreprioritizing how I use the time that I
have. No, it's it's it'san important, you know, thing to
do. Does that mean perhaps youcan share with us and know that you're
(14:46):
Jewish? How you involved religiously orJewishly but Jewish organizations or synagogues? And
does this experience or near mis experiencechanged you're wanting to be even more involved?
I was. I was bar Mitzvadand Orthodox Synagogue, but I am
Ultra Reform. I heard of AlterOrthodox. I've heard of altar Reform.
(15:07):
I just made that up. No, I'm not. I don't practice,
but it's more for me, it'smore about the tradition. Right. So
we do have a Passoversaders, andwe do attend temple on occasion, but
beyond that, it's no, it'sit's it's more of a philosophical kind of
(15:28):
awakening for me than a religious one. Okay, Because that's why I was
wondering if you had this near deathexperience where God, thank you, thank
God that you and your son theworst spirit of that. That's why I
was wondering if it had any notjust philosophical, in any spiritual or religious
connotations for you to say, listen, maybe I should be more involved.
I was just wondering about that outloud. I think it had more of
(15:50):
an impact on my son spiritually, but less less so for me. It's
for me, it's more philosophical.Have you had religious leaders reached out to
you after the incident? When yourincident, I've had religious media reach out
to me, but not religious leaders. We're seeing with Jay Bloom. He
was supposed to he and his sonShron was supposed to be in an ill
(16:11):

not go, and that's where theywere. He's able to be here with

Brenner, America's premier Jewish broadcast onthe year since nineteen eighty one. And
(20:14):
now here's your host and we're back. Jay Bloom is our guests, billionaire
investor from Las Vegas. He andthe Sun show them were supposed to be
an ill fated submarine trip to thebottom of the ocean to visit the Titanic.
By the grace of God, theywere spirit we're taking your phone quotes.
Let's go to Aria and flatbush Ariathere. Yes, Hi, I
(20:36):
just wanted to say to mister Bloom, I was I was a little bit
disappointed to hear that you weren't religiouslyinspired by by your experience. So I'd
like to share some religious thoughts thatI had about the whole thing. The
Titanic was surrounded by a lot ofarrogance at the time that it was built.
They said it was unsinkable, andthat could very well have played into
(20:57):
why it sank. Of course theythought they were invincible. You're not supposed
You're not supposed to do that. Now, connected with that, if Hashem
in fact had anything to do withthe singing of the Titanic, we can
refer back to the book in Shimo'sExodus where the Egyptians were drowning in the
sea and the and the Israelites wererejoicing that their enemies were drowning, or
(21:22):
the angels were rejoicing rather and Godreprimanded the angels and said, do not
rejoice, do not sing while mycreatures are dying. Do not exult while
my creatures are dying. The pointis to visit the scene of where people
lost their lives and get some exultationout of that. Okay, that goes
directly against this uh this, thisrefuge, this, uh this, you
(21:45):
know this. Uh. I don'tthink going to visit the Titanic. It's
a curiosity thing where people want tosee the boat. It was a magnificent
ship at its time. Um,is a tragedy. We're never able to
pull it up. So I'm notsure that's that's correct. I mean they
get a thrill, they get athrill, they're not sharing the tragedy.
(22:08):
I don't think that's what But I'lllet Jay respond to you. I won't
put words in his mouth. Idon't think that's a fair comparison. We're
not rejoicing in the death of ourenemies here. Um. We're taking a
very somber period of time and goingto explore it. No different thing,
going to see um, you know, the ships at Pearl Harbor were going
to Arlington National Cemetery. We're goingto see history and experience, uh,
(22:33):
you know, a very very importantperiod in our history. Yeah, we're
notes. Yeah, I think therewere some Jews, wasn't they from the
famous what famous philanthropic family was onthe Titanic? So shift families actually there?
Um, I believe they were Jewish? Correct, Abraham Strauss family from
(22:55):
Abraham and Strauss, A and s. So the Strauss family, they're actually
part and Macy's and the great greatgrandparents of Stockton Russia's wife was were there's
Strouss's Ida Strauss and Isidor Strauss andtheir story was actually told on the movie
Titanic where she got on the lifeboatand they said, we know who you
(23:18):
are, sir. Would you liketo get on the lifeboat as well?
He said, not until every womanand child are off this boat. And
then the wife said she's not leavingwithout him. She got off the lifeboat
and the two of them died.Their great great granddaughter was Stockton Russia's wife,
exactly so, and so there's nobody'sexalting from it. Listen, it's
intriguing and very few people do weknow, by the way, how many
(23:40):
people actually went to see the wreckof the Titanic. Do you have any
idea. By the way, thereare less than two hundred people. So
less than two hundred people have beendown to the wreckage, and Stockton was
telling us that more people have beenin space than that have been down to
the Titanic. That was part ofthe privilege of being able to go down
and see this piece of history. It's probably safer to go into space and
(24:03):
to go to on the way Stocktonhad it. Uh, I think they
have more procegious, right, anyplans by the way going to space?
You know? Okay? So Imean this is this is how I explain
it. If Elon Musk or RichardBranson or Jeff Bezos said, hey,
do you want to go into space? Yeah? Probably, But if you
told me that you built a rocketin your backyard and let's go, I
(24:25):
wish you the best and see youwhen you get back. Are you in
touch with Musk or any of theseother individuals that you mentioned as far as
maybe participate you know them personally?Actually my son does. And then I
have some nexus to Richard Branson, but my son knows Musk. Neither of
us know Bezos. Let's let's goto Ezra, my goodfriend Ezra Freeland and
Borrow Park. Because if you seethe Freeland group, good Buck, good
(24:48):
Buck, thank You're a fascinating program. I'd like to make a suggestion to
uh, mister Bloom. You knowit's two it's two way a subject to
actually comment on religion and God's plansand all of that related subject. But
(25:08):
what we do, What you couldsurmise is that you were kept alive for
a purpose. And it's difficult forsomeone not in your shoes to understand how
you would feel knowing that you couldhave been in that submarine. But would
you care to comment on whether thisaffected or will affect the way you look
(25:33):
at your your life going forward interms of you were kept a life for
a purpose as a spiritual person ina spiritual way, in a religious way,
but just the fact that you weresaved, and I assume that you
believe in a supreme being, apower being, a supreme being, do
(25:53):
you feel that will change the wayyou live your life in terms of do
you feel that every day do youlive now is that they gained or do
you just say, hey, wellI'm a lucky guy and it was I
just made the right decision without anyinput by God. I think that's a
fair question. You know, there'sa there's a couple of pieces to the
(26:15):
answer. One, I draw adistinction between religion and organized religion. So
I do have some spirituality in myown beliefs about you know, some intelligence
or supreme being. That's different thana temple or church or mosque or any
any organized religion the Vatican, right, it's very different than individual beliefs.
(26:37):
In terms of the rest of yourquestion, yeah, it's It's changed the
way I prioritize things in my life, things that were I'm gonna I'm less
wrapped up in in politics and pettysquabbles going forward, because tomorrow is not
promised. I heard somebody speak toa group of people and they said,
(26:59):
if I would you ten million dollars, who would take it? And every
ham in the room goes up?He said, what if that meant you
wouldn't wake up tomorrow? And everyham in the room goes down. He
said, so what you're telling meis tomorrow is worth more than ten million
dollars to you, right? AndI thought that was a very interesting take
on things, because we all taketomorrow for granted. But there's a there's
going to come today for everybody that'slistening to this, where tomorrow doesn't come.
(27:26):
We don't know when that's going tobe. So yeah, this experience
has changed the way I kind ofview what's important, what's a priority,
and what do I do with mytime? This experience is life altering now
that many people have that ability toappreciate the life the way you will now
be able to appreciate life. It'sreally a gift from God. I look
(27:48):
forward to getting to know you, mister Bloom Stay well, Okay, thank
you, a good question. SoI'm curious about something, Jay. You
mentioned that you're not going to beinvolved in politics or petty things. Gave
the impression that prior to this experienceyou were involved in politics and petty think
can you describe what that means? What will you involve previously in how you
(28:08):
changing that now? The whole? For the last I would say six years,
it feels like the world is dependingout of control in terms of this
US versus them mentality and how peopleare disassociating with people with other people that
have different beliefs than they have. And you know, I've I've lost friends
(28:29):
over politics. I've lost friends overdifferent different opinions. While you're Republican Democrats?
Where was that what you're referring to. I am a moderate and I
tend towards the left in my moderation, but I'm a fiscal conservative and a
social liberal. There really no partyrepresents me nowadays. You know, both
parties feel like they got hijacked. So I was. I was a Reagan
(28:52):
Republican, then I went independent, then I went Democrat. Now I'm back
to nonpartisan. There's both parties aremoving. I haven't changed. Both parties
have moved away from me. Wouldyou say that they moved away from the
average American too very much? So? I think most people are fiscally conservative
and socially liberal, and I thinkI think both parties have lost their way.
So out of curiosity, what doyou see as the future? And
(29:15):
are you going to be involved withsome endeavor to change things in that realm?
Yes, but not at the expensiverelationships and now at the expense of
um, you know, getting angryand getting emotional about you know, some
of these positions. I don't agreewith a lot of the extremists, but
at the same time, I'm notjust going to delete them in social media
(29:37):
and tough them out of my lifejust because of one opinion. So be
fair to say that because of thisexperience, you've become more tolerant of different
people's beliefs and practices. I thinkthat's that's a result of rearranging my priorities
in terms of what's important, right, because what you're describing is a consequence
of being emotionally invested in a position, and I'm less emotionally invested than most.
(30:03):
But it's endemic right now in oursociety that Trump people stopped talking to
Hillary people, and Hillary people stoppedtalking to Trump people, and Bernie people
and Hillary people didn't get along fora while there. But it's more than
just not talking Jay, it's thehatred. I've seen the hatred where people,
whether whether it's a right wing orleft wing, where people say you
have this perspective, you know, and they write you off completely. I
(30:26):
know. I think it's insane. Both both sides have lost their way.

(36:30):
your host. Our guest is JayBloom Just for a little while longer billionaire
investor who was he and a sonshore them we're supposed to be on the
ill FATEUS submarine to visit the Titanicat the bottom of the ocean. By
the grace of God, they weresaved. I know that you and your
son we're going to go on thisvoyage as a bonding father and son.
(36:52):
Then thank god you didn't go onthis one. Are you planning any father
and son bondage instead of what you'vesaid at this submarine. Is there anything
else in the works. Yeah,we're talking about taking a couple of months
and just traveling the world. Actually, so we're putting together in itinerary that
hits pretty much every continent and andall of the things in each stop that
(37:15):
we want to see and do.Let's go to Ellie and Lakewood, New
Jersey. Ellie good Buck, thankyou for joining us. Thank you for
the great program and great guests.Unfortunately, just like they say, tragedy
brings Jews of all stripes together, and like mister J. Bloom good Evening
said, like the Germans did nakea difference what type of Jew we were.
And I was very touched by hissincerity in all areas of his life.
(37:44):
But I want to invite him todo due diligence on his heritage of
the Jewish people who have been livingyou know, for a thousand years and
Europe undisturbed, you know, basicallyliving there until they were the Hitler came
in and threw us off the continent. The research on to separate the message
of Judaism with the truth and sometimesfrom an orthodox upbringing that may have not
(38:07):
been you know, typical or pristineor the contradictory, but the messengers sometimes
not always straight, but the messageis definitely truth. And do some research.
I would wanted to recommend you.Roy Neuberger has a website and book
called Too Sinai himself was some ofthose very successful that searched and u and
went back to his roots. Andyou didn't mention something I said, my
(38:29):
first bank was Manufacturer Hana herself.I said, he worked at Manufactured Hana.
I define can relate. That wasmy first pass book saving Well,
thank you for the insight. NowI will I will definitely check it out.
So we had him as a guestjust the other week. He and
I. If you'd like, Iwelcome you. If you want to be
in touch, I can definitely steeryou on your tipt Israel or anything you'd
(38:50):
like. I'd be happy to returnto you what's truly yours. Thank you,
thank you. Well, we'll figureout through the program how to how
to do that anyway. Thank youfor personality. Okay, I'll pass that
my information. Okay, thank you, okay, thank you. No,
by the way, when you gotIsrael, there is a tremendous, you
know experience the first I remember thefirst time I went, I think will
(39:12):
be a life changing and to bea wonderful experience. So if we could
be any assistance and getting it tomeet some of the interesting people, they
were happy to be part of that. It's a great, great experience,
and I recommend as soon as youcan go. I think that's uh just
going to to Jerusalem and the andthe Cotel on the Wall and seeing the
country and the culinary delights. Ithink you'll you'll really enjoy it, because
(39:36):
it sounds like you're attuned to goingto Israel at this point in your life.
Oh yeah, No, I'm verymuch looking forward to it. And
there's there's a lot there that Iwant to see and do and an experience.
So you know, well, I'mnot big in terms of practice.
I am big in terms of religionand identify it definitely as Jewish and and
(39:57):
relate to my Jewish heritage. That'sI see that as very different than practicing
the religion. So there's a there'sa tradition in the heritage that's very important
to me. No, and Iwould be correct if I was assuming that
this experience who had makes you wantto go to Israel more. And whether
it's a religious experience or not,but certainly you want to connect to your
(40:19):
people, to our people by goingto Israel. I do and it's it's
I mean, I don't know ifit's going to be a religious experience or
not. I'm certainly not going inwith any preconceptions. It could be a
spiritual experience. You got to experiencethe country of God. It's it's our
land. Have you been involved youmentioned about politically in the United States.
Have you been involved at all inpolitics in Israel? I? Really have
(40:40):
not. Again, I think that'sa function of not having been there yet.
It's always something I can do later. And you know, from this
experience, I'm not going to taketomorrow for granted anymore. Did you ever
have ambitions to running for public officeprior to this? I've been asked before.
I generally joke around and said Irun from office. It's not for
office running from sheriff, right,But did you because it sounds like you
(41:05):
were involved politically before this, andnow you're training your priorities where you're seeing
what's right and some of the partiesin politics that we have in this country.
I think it is tearing the countryapart. I've seen many elections and
I remember you know, you know, dealing with you know, when Obama
was present, But nothing compares tothe present time, where the hatred and
the rancorps among people. And Ican tell you that on my Shabbat table,
(41:28):
the only time I had somebody almosthit each other was a Hillary supporter
wanted hit Donald Trump supporter. Wehad them both to do at the same
table. I've never seen anything likeit, and I hope things change,
but I'm not sure it's going tohappen the very near future. I tend
to agree with you. I think, you know, the dialogue is stopped
and people insulate themselves with like mindedpeople and there's no exchange of ideas anymore.
(41:50):
Right, they don't want to.By the way, even I wasn't
always a big fan of the AmericanCivil Liberties Union, but one thing that
I admired. They always champion unpopularcause you know, if they didn't believe
in it, they champion it.Today they've changed the only wild champion causes
that they believe, and they won'tchampion causes that that they find animical to.
They believe so it's changed. Ourcountry has changed, I think for
(42:14):
the worst in that sense that wedon't really want to deal with ideas and
opinions that are not ours or likeours. I tend to agree, and
I have some insight on this becauseI have exposure to these people. You
know, I've had dinner with Hillaryand Bill. I've had dinner with Obama
when twenty sixteen, when he wasa sitting president. I've I've I've spent
(42:35):
some time with Trump. I knowthese people and I see them very differently.
And um, it's it's it's amazinghow different they are when there's not
a camera in the room. Tellus what do they like? When there's
not a camera in the room. What do you see? What do you
see? The personal as opposed tothe public persona. Hillary is wonderful,
um, and and Bill is wonderful. Um. When there's a camera,
(42:59):
she kind of shrink away from it. I mean she's she's small in stature,
so she gets kind of overwhelmed byby press and cameras. She had
when I had dinner with her intwenty sixteen, she was telling me about
her eighty seven point plan, andI said, you need that to do
the job. But that's not goingto get you the job. Nobody has
(43:20):
patience for eighty seven points in readingthrough, you know what you really need
to actually get the job done.So what you need to do is figure
out a message that you can fiton a hat. Because that's where Donald
Trump got it right. That's theattention span of the American public today,
right. Donald Trump knew how toget the job, but not how to
do the job. Hillary knew howto do the job, but not how
to get the job. And answerme, very difficult to find a person
(43:43):
that can do both. Sheloman Brooklyn, your question of comment for our guests,
go ahead, Hi, it's aprivileged to speak with you, and
may God grant you many many moreyears of life on your family. I
just wanted to mention this. Youknow, we see an interesting message in
the tyr up when you look throughoutthe turn of places that have been that
have been destroyed with destruction. Hashemtells us, don't look back. Remember
(44:07):
the place where Lloyd came from. The malacom told don't look back. But
she did look back. She didlook back, and she became a pillar
of assault, which means what I'mtrying to imply, is that Titanic was
destroyed and therefore perhaps it's not it'snot favorable by Ashem. Then when people
go and visit these destructive areas,we have to our job as a Jew.
(44:30):
I'm not here to I'm not arabbi, but it's to rebuild our
life in Israel and the Jewish nation. But to go and revisit destructive places,
maybe it's not favorable. Maybe that'sthat's probably what was the message at
this outcome. That's not favorable tovisit these destructive areas. Yeah, I
would I would suggest that there's analternative viewpoint, right, because we all
(44:54):
have a duty never to forget, and I would hate to see them develop
Auschwitz into a condo development, right. So, Um, when there's tragedy,
it's important that we understand it andremember it and appreciate it and not
necessarily look back, but keep itin our memories so that we don't repeat
the same mistakes. Um. So, I think there's a I understand what
(45:19):
you're saying, and I appreciate yourposition, but I think there's a there's
an alternative position that's equally valid.Okay, I just want to put out
thank for your phone, Baba.Have you visited the concentration camps. I
have not visited the concentration camps. No, you know, but I certainly
would find it very fascinating to doso. I think lights right now to
(45:40):
be in fact, and I thinkthere's a lot of individuals go to the
concentration camps and from there go toIsrael. So you see the devastation,
the destruction, and you see themiracle of Israel's rebirth after two thousand years.
I can tell you I've been throughthe h the Jewish Museum in Washington,
DC, and it was one ofthe most sobering experiences I've ever had,
(46:02):
you know, walking through the traincar that went to the concentration camps
and seeing the piles of shoes andglasses. And it's not a question of
looking back, but it's a questionof never forgetting right. Well, I
think one of the biggest problems thatwe have in our generation, Jay,
is that a lot of Jewish childrenare not getting a Jewish education. They
(46:23):
don't know about the Holocausts, theydon't appreciate the state of Israel, and
we're facing now. I mentioned atanti Semitism earlier, but I think one
of the biggest challenges we face isthe assimilation, the acculturation, where we're
losing our sense of who we arebecause of the lack of Jewish education.
Lack of Jewish knowledge is power.I would agree that there's I mean,
(46:46):
assimilation is important to a degree, but not to the point where you lose
your sense of self, and Ithink we were. Unfortunately a lot of
us have lost it in this countrywhere they don't have that Jewish identity.
It's unfortune. I come across peoplethat, in fact hight into it.
Ed Asna before he passed away.He also, by the way, had
(47:06):
an Orthodox background growing up. Hehad a bar Mitzvah and he told me
he didn't even celebrate Hanaka at theend, and I asked him, do
you remember anything from bar mitz Whenhe goes no, and then he's got
then he starts singing about so itcame to him, but he hasn't thought
about it and God knows how long. So it's Unfortune's part of the American
experience where people have some exposure orno exposure and they just lose it.
(47:30):
So I'm glad to see that you'reconnecting and going to be going to Israel
with your family. I think it'sso important. Then we appreciate you being
here with us, and we lookforward to having me back. I'm looking
forward. I'm looking I'm waiting forthe book to come out. I know
you have one chapter about what happenedwith the Titanic, but I'm sure you
have a lot more to write butpolitics or reflections. And before I let
(47:52):
you go, you mentioned how youliked Hillary and she shrunk when the cameras
came around. What were your impressionswith Donald Trump and Obama? So,
Donald Trump and Obama amazing in theirpersonalities, and Bill Clinton as well.
I think there's some of the bestspeakers in the most captivating people. They
can enter a room and just completelyown the room. Well, I never
(48:13):
say anybody as charismatic as Bill Clinton. By the way he had it,
I mean he made you. Ionce went to his interviewed him before he
became president. I went to hisbirthday party I think was his fiftieth birthday
party. One of those birthday party. He shook my hand. I said,
mister President, I don't know ifyou remember me, but I had
interviewed you before he began. Hedidn't say a word to me. He
shook my handing without saying, Ifelt, buddy, I feel you,
(48:34):
I feel your pain. I loveyou. And that's and I'm a guy.
I just felt it the way heclasped my hand. He is a
tremendically charismatic never met anybody like him, and I'm sure he remembered you.
He was, he was gifted inthat regard. He remembers everybody. It's
it's incredible. So Bill Clinton isa lot of fun. Obama is extremely
intelligent. And Donald Trump is funnyand charming, but also very very coarse.
(48:58):
He's very he can be a veryracive, and he's just so self
absorbed. And Trump is an anomaly. I mean, a lot of Middle
of America thinks that The Apprentice isactually a documentary. It is not.
It was this training to be tobe president. What about Joe Biden?
Have you met with him. I'vespent some time with Joe. Joe strikes
me as somebody who's really trying todo the right thing. He's not sophisticated
(49:23):
like Obama, He's not charming likelike Trump or Clinton. He's just a
blue collar guy that's trying to dothe right thing. Jay, we appreciate
you being in with What is yourHebrew name? I was born on an
air Force base in Japan, sowe had this discussion when I was bar
Mitchfren and I think we settled onYakov Yako. That's a nice name.
(49:46):
It's a patriarch, So Jay YakoBloom. Thank you for being with us.
Look forward to having you back. And I'm glad that you when your
