Speaker 1 (00:00):
I heard radio presents Tom Broke off now here this
how do you spell chaos? You don't have to us
all around us and something called coronavirus, a germ uh
condition that we have no way of controlling at this
time that is exceedingly lethal. It attacks especially older people.
(00:23):
We're talking about me folks, those of us in our sixties, seventies,
and eighties, but everyone else as well, and it has
spread swiftly from China to the United States to Italy.
Italy is all but shut down as a country, and
we're a long way from having it under control. The
experts in the fields say it could be at least
a year before we figure out how to bring this
(00:44):
under control. In the meantime, it will be doing its damage,
as I say, wherever it decides the land, all over
this globe. It could be, at the end of the day,
the most frightening reality that Earth has ever east and
those of us who depend on whether Earth are of
course the primary targets. If I were the president of
(01:08):
the United States, and god knows, I'm not going to
be that at any time in my life, at this moment,
I would set politics aside. I would say I'm president
Donald Trump, but I need help, and I'm reaching out
to Nancy Pelosi, the Speaker of the House, and between
the two of us, we will create a gold standard
committee primarily of scientists and others who know not just
(01:31):
the scientific aspects of this, but the sociological aspects of
it as well to deal with it. Will step back,
will provide the money the city, and will be if
you will, friends in court so they can come to
grips in a bipartisan way and getting a handle on
this unbelievable invasion of our lives. We don't know a
(01:54):
lot about the origins of coronavirus. We do know because
we see on Tell the vision that it looks like
a fuzzy softball dressed up for Halloween. But it's a
long way from that, because this tiny fuzzy softball can
kill you. Don't listen to the talk show crazies who
claimed that they know all about it, left right or
(02:14):
in the middle. Don't take my unfiltered commentary. This is
for the experts only. They're the ones that we should
be listening to. They are a scientists in the fields
of toxic substances. So use your head, call your friends,
your doctors, and your neighbors, find out what they're saying
and what they're prepared to do to change their lives,
(02:36):
so that we can as a society, as a country,
as a people, wherever we live in the world, can
begin to come to grips with all of this. Trust me,
I am not being someone who's out there saying the
sky is falling, because it's worse than this guy is falling.
We have been invaded by coronavirus, and we're a long
(02:59):
way from having any kind of ability to bring it
under our control. So whatever your politics, your occupation, your
spiritual beliefs, whatever your net worth is, reach for your compassion,
gene use your common sense, lever also as a member
(03:19):
of our society, not just in the United States. But
I'm talking about human kind now. This is a threat
that we can't deal with unless we have a heart
to go with the mind. It is a killer. We
have to begin with that. It will take the best
of all of us to bring it to an end,
and it is maybe the greatest test of our lifetime.
(03:42):
I hope it's not. I hope that there will be
at some point, not to distant future, a kind of
bright and shiny moment in which a technician working in
a lab late at night says, uh huh, I think
I have figured this out, but don't count on it.
In the meantime. It is serious, serious business. I say
(04:06):
all this after a day spent sailing in Florida. I
know it sounds like that's the kind of life that
I have, But I interrupted my writing and my commentary
so I could go out and see how the rest
of the world was doing. And what I could tell
you is that the rest of the world was typical
about American day. There they were in their sailboats in
South Florida, thinking about a lot of things in their family,
(04:30):
but suddenly realizing that as they were skimming across the
salt water, somewhere else in a laboratory, scientists were trying
to say, how on the hill do we get this
under control? It has severely disrupted our lives. Already, commerce
is being shut down. Major League Baseball will not begin
(04:51):
this season. These are the recreational parts of our life.
Then think about the consequences when it comes to starting
a new business or having money to continue the business
that you now have. Think about the consequences of this
as a threat to all of us, there are no
doors through which it cannot go. And then if that's
(05:13):
the case, how do we decide as human kind that
we can link arms and find a way not just
scientifically but culturally as well of dealing with it, changing
our lives, playing by the rules that others who know
a lot more about this than all of us, will say,
this is our best hope. It may not be enough,
(05:36):
but that's the best that we have to offer at
this moment. This is the greatest test, at least in
my life's time, since the end of the nuclear war
between the United States and the Soviet Union, which never
came about because cooler heads prevailed. And I hope that
cooler heads can prevail here as well, and that we
(05:58):
will get beyond, if you will, the common pettiness that
so often defines what passes for political dialogue these days,
and get down to the business of saving human kind.
I'm so broke off. I wish I had a happier message,
but this one worries me no end. So I'm Tom
(06:20):
broke Off for high Heart Radio, and I'll see you
along the way.
