Speaker 2 (00:16):
Good morning, Elliott.
Speaker 3 (00:17):
Good morning.
Speaker 4 (00:19):
How are you?
Speaker 3 (00:20):
Could you better?
Speaker 4 (00:21):
It could be worse.
Speaker 2 (00:21):
How's your calf?
Speaker 3 (00:23):
Yeah, we'll talk about that.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
Yeah, well, so that you're talking to a farmer.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
So the Eagles lost to the Kangaroos by five points
at Marvel Stadium in the AFL opener. Well it wasn't
the anfl opener, but it was your your first game,
eighty seven to eighty.
Speaker 3 (00:37):
Two, opening round, opening round.
Speaker 2 (00:39):
What would you say went wrong?
Speaker 4 (00:42):
Uh?
Speaker 3 (00:43):
Where do you start?
Speaker 4 (00:46):
Look, it wasn't a thrashing, No, but we played really bad,
really bad, and we only lost. Yeah, we only lost
by you know, our goal or so, and we played very,
very bad. So we had a review yesterday. Right, wasn't great,
but you know a few things were highlighted. But I
guess the positives that came out of that was that
(01:06):
as easily correctable. Okay, So now it's just a matter
of trying to implement that and making sure that we
can execute it coming this week.
Speaker 1 (01:14):
Yeah, we're North's pretty good. Or was it the fairly
close contentent on the Scoreloard? It was close content.
Speaker 4 (01:19):
I think both teams would say, you know that they
were scratchy in parts, a bit rusty.
Speaker 3 (01:24):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (01:24):
Yeah, so when you look at it as well, our second.
Speaker 3 (01:27):
Quarter was pretty deplorable.
Speaker 4 (01:29):
Yeah, you know, we couldn't change the momentum of the
game and we couldn't stop that. So you know, that's
something that we learned from and you know, we try
and get better at. But you know, I think teams
as well within the competition are finding it very hard
to stop teams once their momentum is going. And the
teams that can do that are the teams that you
know are winning by considerable amount of month margin in
the end. So you know, there's plenty of things to learn,
(01:52):
but you know, that's that's something we don't want to
have those fade outs.
Speaker 2 (01:57):
Surely, one positive is being down thirty three points at
one point and then fighting back to make the deficit
only five points.
Speaker 4 (02:03):
Yeah, that's and that's one of the positive one of those.
So you know, our ball movement in that period was
really good. We're able to get our hands in the football,
which is you know, a big tick. If you can't
get your hands on the footy first, then there's no
point in trying to talk about ball movement and defense
and everything like that, because you're just going to be
chasing around the opposition for too long. That's not what
you want to be. So yeah, definitely in that period
(02:24):
and third we came back, and I guess that's probably
a good positive, especially considering last year. You know, teams
would just overrun us and we'd end up losing by
ten to fifteen goals. So you know, we we're up
for the fight. But again, that second quarter really cost us.
Speaker 2 (02:37):
Heat and the fatigue that he causes was a bit
of a factor. But then I guess that would be
applied to both teams. They were both playing. It was
thirty five in Melbourne, so it's about forty under the
roof at Marvel.
Speaker 4 (02:48):
Well. Chatting to the boys as well, they said, sure
they were quite sweaty, and yeah, but it wasn't ridiculously hot,
so they were sweating quite a fair bit, but it
wasn't how like you'd feel thirty five degree heat, so ok,
so I guess that was a positive. But I guess
both teams are cramping and.
Speaker 3 (03:08):
You've noticed that most of the games, Yeah, and throughout
the whole round cramping.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
But teams are just trying to move the ball that
quick that it's players are just trying to get that
fitness at the moment.
Speaker 1 (03:19):
And the game for Premiership points is with Worldway, isn't
it from any kind of scratch each club or you're playing.
Speaker 4 (03:24):
No matter how many intra club games you play or
practice matches, there's always that another level when it comes
to a round one, and you know the subsequent rounds
as well compared to previous pre preseason matches. So I
don't know what it is that adrenaline just kicks in
and I think maybe you know, the extra fans or
something like that. The crowd just lifts you that another
gear and you know it's it's you can't train it.
Speaker 1 (03:45):
Yeah.
Speaker 2 (03:46):
Happy with the debuts gm BI and Long and CHESSA.
Speaker 4 (03:50):
Yeah, yeah, Long he looks like a good type Chessa's
he's playing a bit more of a wing roll and
didn't really have as much impact as you know, probably
what we'd like.
Speaker 3 (03:59):
But you know, I guess his role that he played.
Speaker 4 (04:02):
He did his job and that's all you can ask
for it from a young bloke. And Rubes looks really good.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Reuben does look good, doesn't he. Yeah, pretty solid stuff.
Speaker 4 (04:09):
Yeah, yeah, he you know, I think he had twelve
thirteen tackles or something like that, and his debut, which
is huge. I think the top was like fifteen or sixteen.
So he has a crack, which is what you want
to see.
Speaker 1 (04:20):
It would have been nice to see you because I'm
sure they've got that excitement and the rises. They ran
out for their first game. You probably remember that day
like it was yesterday mate, when you first ran out there.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
Yeah, I do.
Speaker 1 (04:29):
It wouldn't be nice to get a win in your
first game.
Speaker 3 (04:32):
Absolutely. I was the same too.
Speaker 4 (04:33):
I lost my first game, I think, but I reckon
no more than maybe a couple of goals. So yeah,
and it was that marvel it was against North. Yeah,
you never forget.
Speaker 1 (04:42):
You want to sing the song first time?
Speaker 4 (04:43):
Oh absolutely absolutely, but you never forget your debut.
Speaker 2 (04:47):
Well, the ground was still covered in feathers from Harry
Styles concert Alploe's, so that probably didn't help either.
Speaker 3 (04:53):
Let's talk about your calf.
Speaker 2 (04:54):
You didn't play because you have a calf injury, which
you did in the last couple of minutes of training.
Speaker 4 (05:00):
Ah yeah, literally, yeah. Yeah, at the end of every
sort of training session, we'll have like a bit of
a match play or something like that, you know, where
we'll try and see what the other team's trying to do,
and we'll.
Speaker 3 (05:12):
Play it out like that.
Speaker 4 (05:13):
And within the last within the last, within the last
two minutes, just yeah, felt it pop and thought I
thought it was a knock, and originally and was like, oh,
what's going on here?
Speaker 3 (05:26):
Yeah, and you know, deep down.
Speaker 4 (05:27):
You're like, something's not right here, something's not right. But
you try and you try and palm it off, and
you know, in your mind, you try and talk yourself
out of it. But in the end, this again came
back with not soft tissue. Not soft tissue, Yeah exactly.
He came back with a little little needle.
Speaker 3 (05:41):
Now to put you out for a couple of weeks.
Speaker 4 (05:43):
At this stage, yeah, yeah, so we'll see, we'll sere
we go though. I'm feeling good, so I think you
can get through today and then you know, Thursday pops
around and I'm flying and eating the ground up. Then
they might consider it.
Speaker 3 (05:54):
But we'll right.
Speaker 1 (05:56):
It was weird when you came in here and you're
dropping a couple of hints and I'm going, did I
miss something?
Speaker 4 (06:02):
Yeah?
Speaker 1 (06:02):
I was. Yeah, yeah, anyway.
Speaker 2 (06:05):
Elliot, you still with us? After round one, the Eagles
sit eleventh on the ladder, head of the Cats lines
and PreO the Eagles play the Giants and up just
stayed inum this Sunday bounce downs three twenty pm. Obviously
the Giant's got to win against the Crows on Sunday,
So what are the expectations there?
Speaker 4 (06:23):
Very good second half too, yeah, Giants. I remember looking
at the score going, oh, well, you know, Crows have
been playing very well, yeah all pre season. They should
run this out. And then all of a sudden, I
look down at my phone. Yes, oh my god, I'm
gonna have to change the TV, and when the game, yes,
the hell's going on out.
Speaker 3 (06:40):
So yeah, they do that though, don't they.
Speaker 2 (06:42):
They come out with these like surprise.
Speaker 4 (06:45):
Well yeah yeah, and round one and two anyone's gettable
as well. So yeah, yeah, it's funny how a lot
of people ride teams off for the first round. But
you know, I think we were the same too. In
eighteen we lost to Sydney things were promising. We knew
we had to change a few things execute, but from
that point on it sort of steam rolled us into
the season. So, you know, we're still pretty optimistic, but
(07:06):
it's going to be hard this week as the Giants
as well.
Speaker 1 (07:08):
Yeah, looks like no Lucky Whitfield, no Kelly Key players.
But the Giants, one of those clubs that got so
many of them, just got depth. Yeah, they got some
of those first round draft picks, and I say, I
think it was Toronto or someone playing somewhere else this year,
and they've lost so many of those players to other
clubs and it's still got strength.
Speaker 4 (07:22):
Yeah, Toronto and Hopper at Richmond two, they were big losses,
but they've just got so much depth.
Speaker 1 (07:28):
Yeah.
Speaker 4 (07:28):
So, and I guess that helps with them being in
the draft for a few years as well, and they
get all those high draft picks. But yeah, it's it's
going to be a tough game because a lot of
those players are top ten draft picks throughout the whole team,
and they're very talented, very talented.
Speaker 2 (07:44):
Are you concerned about the post edge Cheer and grass
at opts causing any injuries.
Speaker 4 (07:49):
I haven't seen it. So I don't have any concerns.
I trust that they're going to get this, you know,
the surface right. Being a fellow grassman myself, Yeah, I
trusted there. I'm trusting that they're going to get it
done a lot.
Speaker 1 (08:04):
I saw footage yesterday. It was a lot of it
down later a lot.
Speaker 4 (08:06):
Yeah, So hopefully hopefully come game day it's sick.
Speaker 1 (08:10):
I was waiting to see them with you know, like
carpet guys with that thing they kicked. Then neither they
put the carpetal, but they were they were doing it
pretty quickly. I don't know, stick to.
Speaker 4 (08:21):
Yeah, n onely thing is hopefully it just sows down
and sticks to the ground.
Speaker 3 (08:26):
Yeah. Otherwise the main thing, well, you just don't.
Speaker 4 (08:28):
Want big patches of turf just sliding around.
Speaker 3 (08:31):
I'm sure to be fine.
Speaker 1 (08:31):
Rip it up every time we run over it.
Speaker 2 (08:33):
Speaking of injuries, Jeremy, how's that was terrific? Was that
one of the worst injuries you've ever terrific?
Speaker 1 (08:41):
Broak his arm?
Speaker 4 (08:41):
Oh well, I had a very similar experience as a kid,
not on the football field, not on the football field.
Was this was this was probably one of the silliest
things I've ever done, And same break, both bones completely
snapped all but I was I was smart enough or
(09:02):
thought I was cool enough to go skateboarding in thongs.
Speaker 1 (09:05):
Okay, yeah, yeah, yeah, I would.
Speaker 4 (09:09):
Have been maybe twelve or something like that. So I've
gone down this ramp thinking I'm a legend in thongs. Yeah,
lost all sorts of traction. Skateboard's just gone right out
underneath me. Put my arm down because I'm obviously falling
down on the ground. Snapped clean breakthrough. And I was
out the back of you know, the house or whatever
like that down south and all the day, and I
just looked at my arm and it's just completely snapped
(09:30):
all the way through. I've ran up the stairs and
was like, well, and Mum's on the couch. I was like, Mum,
I think I brought my mark, and she's looked at
it and just went.
Speaker 3 (09:39):
Oh my god.
Speaker 4 (09:42):
Yeah, I had to have surgery full and luckily, well yeah,
luckily I was a kid too, because they were like, well,
you know, we'll just set it and the where you go,
you're just going to have full plates everything, and yeah,
it's not it's not fun.
Speaker 1 (09:53):
Far out. I knew it about. I still haven't seen
it because the news. We refused to play the footage back.
Speaker 3 (09:58):
Yeah, it's okay. He he is so high too, like.
Speaker 1 (10:01):
He would have one thing he's got that leaper isn't.
Speaker 4 (10:04):
Yeah, he does, but he would have fallen from maybe
two or three meters, like it's.
Speaker 1 (10:08):
Crazy, Superman.
Speaker 3 (10:09):
Mine was only like half a meter and.
Speaker 1 (10:12):
Twelve felt like good luck, we don't want to see you.
And rehab of course, thank you.
