(00:00):
Welcome in to it. Broncos CountryTonight. Benjamin Albright, Grant Smith producing
short show tonight again post Rockies.Got a lot to get to. Interesting
day yesterday, talked a lot aboutthat stuff. We'll get to it here
in just a bit. The NFLDraft just a little bit away. My
yearly mock draft will come out tomorrowmorning. For those of you that have

(00:23):
been asking, inquiring, patiently awaiting. That will drop tomorrow morning about ten
am Mountain Standard time, which wouldbe noon on the East coast. So
if you guys want that mock draftthat that'll be out there, and you
guys can tear me your shreds forthat stuff at that point in time.
Five six six nine zeros text lineBroncos uniform debut yesterday. The dust is

(00:51):
settled, and people still hate them. I got that bad. They're not.
I mean, there are things Idon't like about them, but they're
not that bad. They clean upa sleeve a little bit and get rid
of all the weird o triangle thing. Then you know, I think we're
somewhere. It's not what I wouldhave done, but you know, to
each their own five six six ninezeros in text line tell me how you

(01:15):
feel about the uniforms. I thinkwe all love the throwbacks. Talked about
that extensively. Yesterday. Broncos madetwo moves yesterday, signing corner Levi Wallace,
formerly of the Bills and Steelers, and trading for Jets quarterback Zach Wilson,

(01:38):
the former number two overall pit theWilson deal, they didn't give up
any draft capital. They give updraft position. I should say they din't
even a draft picks. They giveup capital, They gave up position.
They moved from the sixth round tothe seventh round and are only paying half

(02:00):
his salary. The Jets are takingon the other half. So basically,
the Jets moved up from the seventhto the sixth. It eat half his
salary two point seventy five million.Broncos paid two point seventy five million.
It is a no cost, lowrisk flyer on a quarterback and a potential
reclamation project. And I'm you know, I'm I'm fine with it. Whether

(02:21):
or not Zach Wilson is a starterfor the Denver Broncos irrelevant. The move,
on its face is a chance foryou to kind of have a reclamation
project and see what you could dowith it. If it doesn't work out,
well, okay, it doesn't workout, what quarterback were you going
to get in the sixth or seventhround of this draft that was going to
be comparable in terms of talent.Zach Wilson is the same age as Michael

(02:46):
Pennix and bo Nix are now withinsix months of each other, the same
age, except he's got three yearsof starts in the NFL, so you
got a little bit of experience. So the idea that this is somehow a
bad move is something that kind ofblows my mind. There are a lot
of people making fun of it,and I get making fun of it from
the perspective that it's Sack Wilson andwe've sort of seen it on the field

(03:08):
and it hasn't been great. Iget it from that, But in terms
of it being something to make funof, overall, they traded nothing,
they're paying nothing, and at theend of the day, you get a
get to take a flower of aguy who's a number two overall draft pick.
So I don't I don't get withthe making fun of the move.

(03:30):
If you want to make fun ofthe player, you want to make fun
of the mom jokes. I'm look, I'm I'm here for it. I'm
participating in those, but I'm notmaking fun of the move. Overall,
this is a shrewd move, andif it doesn't work out, it doesn't
cost you anything. And if itdoes work out, you look like a
genius. Go back and look throughAndy Reid's history, and what he's done

(03:53):
for quarterbacks is a reclamation project.Sean Payton could take a book out of
that. What happens if you turnZach Wilson into something either he's your quarterback
or you gotta get some draft capitolback for him. At the end of
the day, Like, I don'tunderstand making fun of the move for the

(04:14):
sense that there's potential there, becausethere's no downside to it. What is
the downside to acquiring Zach Wilson forless than a seventh round pick? Again,
you didn't give up a pick, you just moved back. What's the
downside You're paying two point five million. What's the downside here? There's not

(04:40):
So Again, I'm like, asfar as that move goes, I'm fine
with the Zach Wilson move. DoI am I enamored with it? No?
Am I enamored with the player. No, but I do believe that
it presents an opportunity for the Broncosto better themselves. And I'm always going
to be foor moves that present anopportunity to better yourself. You didn't mortgage

(05:04):
anything, you didn't give away thefarm. You move down from the sixth
round of the seventh in a draftthat probably only has one hundred and twenty
to one hundred and forty picks thatare you know, considered worthwhile anyway,
who cares. It's a shot inthe dark on a no cost anything that

(05:26):
at the end of the day couldcould turn into something, and if it
doesn't, you're not out anything.Five six six nine zero. Broncos also
made another move today and picked upthe fifth year option on cornerback pats Er
tan So. Tan is now fullyguaranteed nineteen point eighth two million for the

(05:46):
twenty twenty five season, and heis on track to probably end up being
the highest paid corner in history atabout twenty one million a year with about
seventy million guaranteed whenever that multi yearextension comes to fruition, and I do
expect them to do that, andI do expect that to be done fairly
soon. All the people that wantedto trade Patrick Sirtan are down bad right

(06:16):
now, I mean like bad. There are people who have for months been
telling me that the Denver Broncos neededto trade Pat Cirtan. And I'm not
saying that it is impossible that theywill do it. There's one very specific

(06:40):
scenario that I don't believe is goingto come to fruition at all. Never
believed it would come to fruition, and it doesn't look like it's coming to
fruition now. So you never saynever. But they were not trading certan,
They were not entertaining coals on certainand they were not bundling certain in

(07:01):
a package of picks to move up. All that kind of Those are not
real things. Those are fake reports, and shame on those people for putting
them out. Fake reporting, absolutelyfalse. A matter of fact, Here's
what I'll do for you guys whenit comes to the post draft but draft
press conference, I'll directly ask Georgepay I will use my question to ask

(07:25):
George Peyton if they ever consider tradingpast certan. There you go get.
You'll get George and Sean Payton's specificcomments on it. Five six six nine
zeros a text line. I don'tunderstand the obsession behind wanting to trade Cirtan

(07:46):
in the first place. Yeah, you might be able to get a lottery
ticket on a on a quarterback thatmight turn out it might be the next
Zach Wilson. Why do you Whywould you cut a hole in your boat
to plug the other they're a holein your boat? Are you really going
to roll? Levi Wallace and theMarii mathis out there as starting corners and

(08:11):
in a vision that features Justin Herbertand Pat Mahomes. You kidding me.
I've seen some dumb ideas out there, but that about takes the cake.
And I'm sick and tired of peopletell them you got to do what it
takes to get the quarterback. No, you got to build a good football
team, then you do what ittakes to get the quarterback. Mortgaging everything

(08:31):
to go get a quarterback when youdon't have the right team around them or
the assets to build around them isnegligent roster building. And I've said it
before, I'll say it again. It's negligent. And anyone telling you that
that's what you should do to builda roster is an idiot, or as
the kids say today, they don'tknow ball. Their opinion is not worth
listening to. I understand that you'renot gonna win a Super Bowl without the

(08:54):
quarterback. You're not gonna win gameswithout a team to protect the quarterback or
you know, be there to beskill position players or blocked for him.
You're not gonna make the playoffs ifyou don't have a if you don't have
an offensive last. Ask David Carrabout that. Asked Tim Couch about it.
Ask any number of teams that tradedup and traded away all those assets

(09:18):
and they didn't have what they neededto build around the guy. The teams
that have been successful in trading upfor the quarterback were teams that were already
at least mostly built. Kansas Citywas a top five offense when they moved
up to get Mahomes. Buffalo hadalready been to the playoffs with Tyrod Taylor

(09:39):
when they traded up to get JoshAllen. The San Francisco forty nine ers
built that team around journeyman Jimmy Garoppolo. Then they moved all in to get
Trey Lance and that didn't work out. Thankfully, they used another pick and
that on but Thanky, there's justanother pick on brock Perty bailed him out.

(10:03):
Because you can miss on the quarterbackif you trade up. The Chicago
Bears moved up one spot bidding againstthemselves, passing on Pad Mahomes to take
Mitch Trubisky and add insult to injury, two of the picks that they traded
ended up becoming Alvid Kamara and FredWarner. They missed on the quarterback and
they lost the ammunition to be ableto build around the guy. Can you

(10:24):
imagine if they just stay put orbet he had it traded back gotten Pat
Mahomes, Fred Warner and Alvin Kamara, the Chicago Bears would be a different
franchise right now. And again,I sort of hate doing that revisions history
kind of thing, but I wantto make a point, and that is

(10:46):
that desperation for the quarterback is abad thing. Yeah, you want the
quarterback the quarterback, not a quarterbackthe quarterback, but moving all in on
a quarterback before you have a rostercapable of having that quarterback be able to

(11:07):
win games is the wrong answer. And you know how I know that's true.
Look at the quarterback the Broncos justtraded Ford and Zach Wilson. They
drafted the kid, and they didn'thave anything around him. They didn't have
a support system. And now partof that is unfortunate because Greg Napp passed
away in that tragic bicycling accident, and that was the plan to develop him
right. And then they had abunch of coaches there that had never developed
a quarterback before. It was theirfirst time. That's part of it.

(11:30):
But they also didn't have the offensiveline, receivers, the run game.
They they did not have that thingbuilt the way they needed to build it,
and they thought they were going tobuild it on the fly, and
it just it doesn't work like that. I'll let you guys in on something.
There is a magic formula. Youneed things to break your way,

(11:50):
but there is a magic formula. In your first year as a general manager
a head coach, you should probablytrade back, especially if you have high
picks, and multiply your picks. The reason that you do that is so
that you have a rolling war chestthat you can either use the picks or
trade them and continue to move forward. And we've seen good teams do that.

(12:18):
Now, you got to hit onthe quarterback when you do pull the
trigger, and you probably have topull that trigger in year two. But
there is sort of a formula. If you're a brand new general manager,
head coach, your first priority shouldbe trading back in that draft. And
it's interesting because you're going to seea team not do that in this draft.

(12:43):
I'm referring to the Washington Commanders attwo. They are going to make
the pick, and I'm ninety ninepercent it's going to be Jaden Daniels.
But theoretically, and if you believein the quarterback cool, then I guess
you gotta gotta take them. Butif you're in that no man's land there,
you know, three through eight orwhatever, usually you want to trade

(13:03):
back, multiply picks, stockpile thewar chest, and have role in capital
to move forward, and you mightnot be a Super Bowl contender in your
first year. Okay, now,how does that apply to the Denver Broncos,
because I think you have to lookat them this year as being in
year zero. I understand for mostfans we're talking about a mere ten year

(13:26):
drought, but for the Walton PennerGroup and Sean Payton were not. This
is year two of Sean Payton yearone was the Russ Wilson experiment. It
didn't. It didn't work between thetwo of them. Whoever you want to
blame, whoever you want to credit, We've been over that. I'm not
doing that again. This is yearzero. Sean Payton's gonna get this year

(13:52):
and another year, no matter whatthe contract that he signed. You're just
not paying somebody twenty million dollars, eighteen million dollars whatever to not coach for
you, Just not, especially afterpaying a quarterback one hundred million to not
play for you. He's going toget this year in next year, give
him what he wants, set himup to be able to succeed multiply.
The picks understand that this is abuilding year and that you're building the foundation,

(14:16):
and that I understand last year shouldhave been that year, but it's
not. So Here we are andbasically, as a coach and as an
organization, you're asking the fans totrade one year of building in an effort
to get where they want to be. If social media and the text line

(14:37):
al any indicator fans don't like thatplan, that's their job to sell you
on it. It's not mine.My job is to criticize, I don't
work pr for the team, despitewhat other radio stations in town pretend.
You have the opportunity to really buildsomething here, and you want to build

(15:03):
it in your own image, andif you're Sean Payne, you want to
build it the way you want tobuild. Okay, But how are you
going to build it if you tradeeverything away moving up to go get a
quarterback who, by the way, people compare to Zach Wilson. That's what
they compare JJ McCarthy to behind thescenes. He's the guy everybody wanted Zack

(15:24):
Wilson to beam. Okay, Isee it, because you already have the
Zach Wilson here. So at theend of the day, are you mortgaging
three first round picks and something else? Because it'll take you more than three

(15:46):
first round picks, probably three firstin Courtland Sutton is probably what you're looking
at to move up to three orfour and get the quarterback that well,
I say, not the fourth quarterback, but the orth crack at a quarterback
in this class, whether you havehim higher or not, history has shown

(16:07):
us that that is a disastrous idea. We just got through trading a bunch
of draft picks and players for RussellWilson. We exacerbated that by trading picks
for Sean Payton first and a second. We don't have a second round of
this year. The whole bow Knicksplan would be a lot easier. We're

(16:29):
getting down to it, and Ithink this team is going to be going
backwards smoother than Michael Jackson doing amoonwalk. We'll get into some more of
that on the other side. Helistened to Broncos Country tonight here on KOA.
It's a fifty AM ninety four oneFM News Talk Sports. Welcome back

(16:52):
to it, Broncos Country tonight,Benjamin Albright, Grant Smith, he're with
you short show tonight post Rockies.Got another short show tomorrow night post Rockies
as well. Then the NFL Draft. We got full NFL Draft coverage covering
you from the first pick all theway to mister Irrelevant right here on KOA.

(17:15):
That'll begin Thursday. We'll have theKA Sports show as as normal on
Thursday and then pivot to our NFLDraft coverage, myself, Ryan Edwards,
Stave Logan, big Al, NickFerguson, Brendan Christaal will you know?
And then of course your favorite favoriteguys behind the glass back there, Grant
Smith, Michael coover all those guys, Jeff Bradley. We'll be running this

(17:36):
thing for all the way through Saturday. I believe Saturday we might have to
switch over to k HOW at somepoint, our sister station, to to
end coverage for the Rockies. Butoverall it will be it will be predominantly
here on k WA Thursday and Fridaynights and Saturday morning. We'll start on

(17:56):
KOA. We'll let you know everythinggoing there as well, but we will
cover you the entire NFL Draft. We will have plenty, plenty of stuff
going on there. Five six sixnine zeros a text line you guys can
textas during the draft. We've gotplenty of stuff going on there. My
mock draft. People been asking aboutthat I yearly once one time. Mock
draft that I do comes out tomorrowmorning, so you guys will wanna you

(18:21):
guys want that. It'll be availabletomorrow morning. We'll have that up and
going at that point in time.I'm looking forward to your comments on as
you guys tear me shreds on mymock draft. It's always fun. Had
had a lot of fun coming upwith different scenarios, what the Broncos could

(18:45):
do, should do, would doall this kind of stuff, And I
like all the moves lately seem toindicate a trade back. I mean,
there's, like I said, there'sa single specific scenario in moving up that
that is possible, and I thinkmost of you who have listened to the
show by now know what that is. But I think at the end of
the day, I think this isa team that's moving backwards, and I

(19:07):
think that's the smart move. Ithink multiplying your assets, you're still able
to get a quarterback and add tothat room. You can also add other
pieces to a team that needs them, and I think I think you can
come away with a lot more valuedoing that rather than mortgaging everything. And

(19:32):
if it doesn't work out with yousecond round or whatever, well, okay,
well then you can try again nextyear. You have a first round
of next year, you can tryagain. If you mortgage everything on one
guy and let's hypothetically say that's JJMcCarthy, you trade three ones to go
get JJ McCarthy and it doesn't workout, you don't have the assets to

(19:53):
recover from that. You move backwardsand it doesn't work out with bon Nicks,
youah plenty of assets to try againthe next year. And I think
that's the thing they metaphorically, it'slike you're giving two options. You have

(20:14):
a target three hundred meters down there, and you got to you got to
hit that target, right. Wouldyou rather have one bullet with with a
with a high powered scope or wouldyou rather have six bullets with a mid
range scope? And that's sort ofthe metaphor here, Yeah, the high

(20:36):
range go, but fee you feellike you know that you could do that.
But I'm gonna be honest with you, somebody who used to fire rifles
for the army. Target's a littleharder than you think they are. Scouting
is any inexact preposition. It isan art, not a science. And
just because you trade up for aquarterback doesn't mean that quarterback is gonna pan
out. The math suggests that thebest move move is not to trade up

(21:00):
when you don't have everything around youfive six six nine zero. Some of
you guys still complaining about the uniforse, I can't do anything about that.
It's like five years until they getto change them. What I am going
to do is have a graphic designer, mock something up, kind of show
you what I would have done andgo from there. Nobody commenting on the

(21:30):
Levi Wallace edition, which I thinkis kind of big. Not that I
expect him to be an all procorner or anything, but he's depth at
the position, veteran depth of position. But I think it's a less pressing
need because I felt like corner wasa pressing need prior to that. Now
you can have a real competition betweenRiley Moss and Murray Mathis and Levi Wallace

(21:52):
and see who wins out to beopposite Sirtan and Jaquon McMillan. McMillan course
will be occupying the slot. Mcmellanwas a bit of revelation last year.
There's gonna be some camp battles atsome of these positions this year. The
safety position. Your starters from lastyear are gone. Kareem Jackson, Justin
Simmons both gone that that number twocorner spot opposite Sir ten and then the

(22:18):
nonslought spot. The Jaquon McMillan occupiesthe edge rusher opposite Benito. You know
you've got Drew Sanders, You've gotBaron Brownings out of the Cooper and probably
a draft pick Lebroncos have got tobe able to generate more pressure up front.

(22:41):
They just do. And I thinkthey've got a good run fits guy
in DJ and they've got a good, you know, another good, good
player in Zach Allen. I thinkthey need a true nose. I'd love
to see them trade back off oftwelve and maybe trade way back, maybe
trade out of the first round entirely. You can get bow Knicks, you

(23:02):
can get to Fandre Sweat. Youget enough of those picks, you might
even be able to get the OregonCenter, you know, so you get
you get bow Knicks, jpj andand Tovandre Sweat. Would you rather do
that? Or would you rather tradethe next three drafts and move up and
get JJ McCarthy. I'll listen toyour opinion. Sell me on it.

(23:26):
I don't think they're moving up,like I said, I think there's one
specific scenario where they can move up, and that's it. I think they're
moving back, and I need tobe sold on moving up. I need
to be sold on staying at twelve, because the way I'm looking at it,
I'm not I'm not with it.Five six six nine zero. Tell

(23:53):
me, sell me, because I'msitting here on this side of the mic,
and I've talked to you guys aboutit. I've heard you you got
to have the quarterback and all thatkind of stuff. Well, you got
to have the quarterback to win thesuper Bowl. Absolutely, you got to
have a team to make the playoffsto begin with. And I'm for building

(24:14):
the team. Build a bully, build up, build a powerhouse, build
a juggernaut, and then find thequarterback. That's that is my preferred methodology.
I think it is negligent roster buildingto go out there and get a
quarterback with the team that you have. Sean Payton has a history with used

(24:41):
quarterbacks. You think about buying newcars, you're driving around the lot.
It's not worth what you paid forit, and you know, you never
really know it's a brand new car. You never really know that. I
get a lemon with a used car. You got a little bit of history
on it. You look up that, Vin. Sometimes you can ride those
used cars for a long time.I know I've had a lot of success

(25:03):
with that. I never buy new. Let the you know, I let
the let the devaluation out of it. By two years old. Every time.
That's just me, I'm a weirdo. Whatever. The same thing with
quarterbacks, and I'm not just talkingabout Drew Brees. Jameis Winston played better

(25:25):
with Sean Payton. Teddy Bridgewater revampedhis career with Sean Payton, So I
don't I'm not necessarily opposed to notgoing all in on the quarterback this year,
continuing to build the assets, andthen this offseason you're gonna have decisions

(25:47):
to make. Did one of thoseassets work out at quarterback? If not,
we can go to the draft. If not, free agency. Dak
Prescott is gonna be a free agent. Would you like to see Dak Prescott
and a Sean Payton offense with aready built defense? Because I share the
hell would I would be all aboutit. I feel like there are multiple

(26:22):
options, and as long as youcontinue to keep your options open, you're
gonna be good. I just feellike this is gonna be a painful year
for Broncos Company, Broncos Country,Broncos Company, Good Lord, painful year
for Broncos Country as they continue totry to build that thing out. You're
turning a lot of the roster over, a lot of fan favorites aren't here

(26:45):
anymore. Justin Simmons is gone,Russell Wilson gone. I don't know if
they keep Garrett Bowles around f thisyear. And I feel like that there's
a way to build this team outto be successful going forward, and I

(27:08):
don't feel like that's mortgaging everything togo get a quarterback right now. Maybe
I'm wrong. I know a lotof you want that. I just I
think Thursday, there's gonna be alot of people who are saying Olbright doesn't
know anything, that are about tobe down bad yet again. I think

(27:36):
that there's a lot of people toutinga lot of things that are out there
that may or may not be accurate. Yeah, I've seen the I see
I saw the report the Broncos blockbusterpatzertan thing that they per sources that was
completely made up. Now, doesthat mean that the Broncos can't put something

(27:59):
together fourth No, But I don'tbelieve that their trading pats are tan.
I believe the extension, excuse me, the fifth year option today kind of
shows that they didn't have to pickthat up. You can wait to pick
that up till after the draft. We'll see there are worse situations to be

(28:30):
in than what Denver's in right now. I don't think they're in a bad
spot. I just think that they'rein a position where rock and a hard
place came up. We got someoptions. Why don't we pursue those options
and go from there? Five sixsix nine zero. I'm looking at the

(29:02):
text line here, and you guysare mixed. Although I'll say this,
a lot more of you are onthe trade back bandwagon than were when I
started this thing back in February, when everybody was telling us we had to
move up to get a quarterback, mortgage, everything, trades, c Aretan,
damn the torpedoes. There's still ahealthy amount of you that still want

(29:23):
to do that, but the majorityof your are firmly team trade back.
Now, welcome to the smart side. I'm looking forward to this draft,
I really am. You know, there's a lot of years where I love

(29:47):
the process. This year, Ilove the process a lot less and I'm
waiting for the result. It's beenone of those years. It's been a
tiring year, been an exhausting year. I'm one hundred percent ready for this
thing to just to be at thedraft where the prep is over I put
everything down and just do that.A lot of interest on what the Jets

(30:14):
are going to do at ten.I think it's Vaga Bowers. We'll see
a lot of interest in what theAtlanta Falcons are going to do, whether
they're going to trade out or not. I think they take Dallas Turner or

(30:36):
a lot too. We'll see Themock draft will be up on the Kowei
website tomorrow. I'll tweet out thelink from my Twitter account at all Bright
NFL, so you'll be able toget it from there. I have heard

(30:57):
some rumors that the Washington commander wantto bundle both their seconds and a third
and move up. I'm interested tosee if Broncos Country would be interested in
moving twelve for two early second roundersand the third. Seeing is how you
could still probably get bo Nicks bydoing that. I saw the rumor today

(31:22):
about the Vikings and the twenty thirdpick. I don't buy that, just
like I'm not buying the Raiders atthirteen on Pennix. Everything I've been told
was something wildly different. So Imean, we'll see. The one thing
about all this that's interests me.The one thing about this is, as
I'm saying this, You'll find outwho has sourcing in this league and who
doesn't real fast tomorrow. So allthese people saying all these things, hold

(31:48):
them accountable. I think it goeswithout saying that. I'm telling you hold
me accountable. I always have oneof the more fascinating phenomenons that people on
the internet or oh b it deletesthe wrong takes and what the dude that
they live on in perpetuity. Thepodcast can't be deleted. It's just there.

(32:10):
And I'm not sitting out there deletingtweets. I deleted my Twitter history
back in twenty nineteen, since youknow, I used to have some old
trolls in there and I didn't wantpeople to bring that stuff up. But
I'm not in the habit of deletetweets unless there's a joke in there that
I think somebody could mistake for somethingelse. I'm not deleted. I'm just

(32:36):
not hold people accountable. If they'reputting out reports about this kind of stuff,
uh, and it's wrong, holdthem accountable. You guys know that
I donate to charity for everyone Iget wrong. I need a good charity
if for anything I get wrong. For this draft too, trying to figure

(33:02):
out how exactly I'm gonna work thatwith the mock draft. But I'll do
something. But I need a goodcharity, so I'll take your suggestions to
five six six nine. There I'lljot him down. But at the end
of the day, I'm looking forwardfor this part or this process to conclude.
I'm looking forward to this draft.I'm looking forward to stopping having to

(33:23):
go through the million hypothetical scenarios, try to relay information that I can relay
or hint at things that I can't. I'm glad it's coming to a close.
I'm exhausted this year. I'm tiredof it, tired of the roller
coaster ride. I'm ready to seethe results. I'm done with the process.
I'm done making the sausage I wantto eat. After I put the

(33:51):
mock draft out tomorrow we got ashort show. I'll be looking forward to
your comments on it, and thenI want to hear one thing you guys
want to happen in the draft betweennow and tomorrow. I want to hear
one thing you guys want to happenin the draft. Not something right there
