(00:00):
We'll go right out to the kwait Commas Pearls hotline though, and bring
on video Benedetto from the Denver Gazette, Viny, how you doing this evening?
Doing well? Hanging out at ballarena and waiting another couple of hours?
See see what the Nuggets sinner, don't. I'm familiar with that feeling
from the the NFL side of thehouse, the NFL draft. We are
eagerly watching the NBA draft here thereare some Colorado connections in addition to what
(00:22):
the what the Nuggets may do.We have, I believe, four picks
in thus far. Is there anythingthat has stood out with you? Uh?
For the first four picks? No, I think I think things have
pretty much gone as expected so farthrough through four picks. But this last
one steph Castle from Yukon to toSan Antonio, I think is something that
we'll we'll see have a pretty immediatepack impact, just with the way,
(00:46):
you know, his athleticism and defensiveintensity compare with the Victor Webbin Yama.
I think could have the spurs, you know, feeling feeling pretty pleased with
that pick. Yeah, that wasone of my favorite players in there.
I like to saw O, thekid out of Australia and there's a couple
of players still to come that I'mI'm a fan of that well as somebody
that has talked about, you know, over the last couple of weeks and
these mock drafts. Uh. Itwas the other kid out of Ukon,
(01:07):
Donavan Klingon, who I think ofhim more as a defensive anchor type player
than really it all around big AndI didn't understand why he was sort of
rocketing up the boards. Am Imissing something with a addor Yeah, I
don't know. I think it's justhe's got the size, and I feel
like there's just kind of a runof teams here that that could use him.
(01:27):
You think about, you know,a Charlotte maybe pairing him with a
with a Lamello ball, or youknow, Detroit's got a couple young explosive
guards. So I think there's theopportunity that that if if not for one
of these two teams, maybe theywould they would trade out of that pick
and someone else would try to comeup and get a center. But I
think it might also just have thatmight be more of a reflection on on
(01:49):
the quality of this draft class asa whole, and you know, I
think I think a lot of peopleare correct and they say this is,
you know, considerably lower when itcomes to start star power. So I
think, you know, about thisfive to ten ranger, I think teams
will will quickly kind of put starpower to the side and just start drafting
for for best fit or immediate impact. Cody Williams of Colorado another name that
(02:12):
has been rocketing up the boards inrecent weeks. We've all seen Cody play
here. Do you think that that'ssomething that he winds up being a lottery
pick and why the sudden rise forhim? Yeah, I think I think
he'll definitely be a lottery pick. And I think a lot of it has
to do with just just his pedigree, you know, him being a five
star high school guy, has internationalyouth experience at that level, and you
(02:38):
kind of it's a different situation. But I think back to the way Calvin
Booth talked about Peyton Watson, whowas a five star high school guy,
played on a on a loaded UCLAteam as as a as a freshman,
and you know, didn't put upthe gaudy numbers, And it's a slightly
different situation with with Cody up andBoulder, But he was playing on,
(02:59):
you know, obviously a team,an experienced team that has had a few
other guys that'll that'll be drafted eithertonight or tomorrow. So it wasn't like
he had that, you know, this massive opportunity to come in and put
up big numbers with the Buffs lastyear. But I think he'll definitely be
a lottery pick, and I thinkit'll be important for him to kind of
land in the right situation where he'snot being asked to do a ton offensively,
(03:23):
you know, right away, butlet him kind of let his defense
and some of the other things thathe does at a pretty high level.
Let him kind of get his seatwet, you know, relying on the
things that he's good at and notbeing asked to do too much too early.
I think will be big for hisprospects. You know, another player
with some Colorado connections here, DaltonCannect who went to Purview High School obviously
(03:45):
Northern Colorado for a couple of yearsand transferred to Test scene. He looks
like he could really be something that'spicked early tonight, maybe make an impact
in the league. How surprising waswas his kind of journey through college basketball
and where he is now. Yeah, it's quite a story, and I
think we're seeing more of these nowthat you know, the transfer portal has
become what it is. I think, you know, he's far from the
(04:08):
only guy who had you know, started at a smaller school, transferred to,
you know, one of one ofthe power conferences, showed well in
his final couple of years of college, and Pard laid that into you know,
you know, I think I thinkhe'll also be another lottery guy.
So it's a great story, andI think that's one one of the positives
of the transfer portal is that, you know, some of these guys who
(04:30):
are overlooked, you know, latein high school have the opportunity to kind
of prove themselves and then take advantageof of what they've done at uh,
you know, lower levels of collegebasketball. And you know, I think
Dalton is he's probably one of thebetter shooters in this draft, and kind
of his pro outlook depends on isis he really a three level score at
the next level or is he aguy who kind of becomes more of a
(04:53):
spot up shooter. So, yeah, great story, and I think he'll
he'll probably be hearing his name calledhere in the next twenty or thirty minutes.
Uh. One of the names thateverybody's kind of keyed on, although
he's probably not going to be takenin the first round, Bronnie James.
I think everybody expects the Lakers totake him in the second round. Uh.
Is there any thought to anybody kindof holding him hostage? Are you
(05:13):
drafting him trying to ransom him tothe Lakers? Yeah, don't. I
don't know if if if that thatwould be Uh, that'd probably be something
for the second round when when youknow it's it's getting pretty bear in terms
of guys you think might be ableto you know, hang around the league
for a while or make an immediateimpact. So I wouldn't be shocked if
(05:36):
he ends up in LA or maybea Phoenix. But I I just don't
know how how beneficial it's going tobe for a team to to draft Ronnie
James and then expect much. Idon't know what the Lakers would would really
give up for. Maybe you geta future second round pick or something,
But I don't think it's going tobe one of those, uh, hostage
situations where they're just asking for anarm in a league for a guy who
(06:00):
we don't we're not sure as anNBA player. Fair enough, We're talking
with Viny bedadetto the Denver gaz that, okay, let's talk about the Nuggets.
They do have a pick that's alittle bit later in this round.
We have some some needs. Obviously, KCP situation is still in flux.
What should the Nuggets do or hopehappens with this pick. I think the
best case scenario for the Nuggets iseither a day Ron Holmes or a Kyle
(06:24):
Philadowski is available at twenty eight.I'm not sure that's going to be the
case, but I just feel likebackup center might be the combination of easiest
void to fill and the most pressingneed. You know, we had the
Nuggets head Reggie Jackson opt into hiscontract earlier this week, which which wasn't
a surprise, but it does givethem some kind of some level of security
(06:48):
at backup point guard. They've gonepretty wing heavy in the last few drafts,
so backup center is something that's kindof been an issue for the team
the last couple of years. Ithink, you know, the Nuggets would
be prett happy if if they hadan opportunity to address that need. At
twenty eight, well saw Reggie Jacksonobviously pick up his option to stick with
(07:08):
the Nuggets. KCP situation still influx. What's likely to happen there?
I think the most likely outcome isKCP opts out of his player option for
next year, and I know,I think the Nuggets would be wise to,
you know, there there is theredoes need to be a top limit.
But I think either offering more moneyand fewer years, or maybe giving
(07:31):
KCP an extra year and maybe notmatching the salary that that some of these
teams. You know, I thinka lot of people are looking at the
seventy six ers and Magic as teamsthat that would be really interested in KCP.
So I think either you know, paying him more for fewer years or
extending the new contract out a yearfurther than than some of the other teams
(07:55):
interested. I think that would bewise for the Nuggets to kind of not
do whatever they have to do toget him back, but but get you
know, go pretty close to doingwhatever it takes. What what can the
Nuggets do to strengthen that bench thisoffseason because we saw, you know,
it just wasn't quite the same withoutBruce Brown, and if you do lose
(08:16):
CACP, I mean that creates agaping hole there. What what can they
do to kind of strengthen What arethe options out there? Yeah, I
mean, so if they're a secondApron team, which looks likely, if
they retain KCP, it's going tobe down to, you know, the
guys they draft tonight and tomorrow andminimum contract guys, or maybe you can
swing a smaller trade involving a ReggieJackson or a Zeke Nagi. But I
(08:39):
think I think they're really in anall right situation if you can, if
you can count on some development fromthe young bench guys. You know,
Christian Brown is you know, probablythe most experience, but Peyton Watson taking
a leap this offseason, Julianstrauther beingmore dependable next year, and then you
(09:01):
know, it remains to be seenwhether Jalen Ticket or Hunter Tyson are going
to be able to guys who arewho are going to be able to contribute.
But you know, it does feellike by the end of tomorrow's second
round that the Nuggets will have nota full roster, but it will be
pretty close. So I think theirbest bet in terms of improving that group
(09:22):
might be targeting of a veteran ortwo who would be willing to take the
minimum to to have the opportunity tocontend for a championship here. I think
that's probably that, coupled with thepicks tonight and tomorrow are going to be
Denver's best bet for for improving thatbench unit. May better deet the Denver
Gazette, then appreciate your time thisevening. Awesome you guys have a good
(09:43):
one. Yeah, thank you.
