(00:00):
Welcome to it, Broncos Country Tonight. But with all Brian Dick, Ferguson,
(00:03):
Grant Smith, Bullets Hat Thursday.Been out for like a week or
so, haven't you. Yeah,Well, I've been back the last couple
of days, but I had torun CMN and the Rockies game in.
Well, so you've been philandering onthis show with other shows. Not by
choice. You were forced into it. You tripped and fell into the shows.
When you're got to your job, they just put you in the places
(00:24):
you need to be. That seemsprobably a lot more likely five six six
nine yeeros of text line. Youguys want to get involved in the conversation.
Nick Ferguson had to hustle his wayinto the studio forgot his key card
because he was apparently busy watching thenew Deadpool movie before anybody else could get
to Man, you can't dress andit's like that I'm about dry. Wow.
I told you ahead of time. This was covin Wow. Okay,
(00:46):
since you want to do this, huh, I do? Yeah? I
did samely, jealous of the factthat you bet you got tickets that we
don't. Yes, I has goingto see the Sunday I'm just see it
Saturday. So you could do thiswithout giving any spoilers away because they haven't
yet. Well, you wanted toout me eat everyone. Well I'm going
to out everything right now. Solisten up as we cut a mic up.
(01:07):
Yes, one alert, here wego. What are you doing?
Move your hand out that button,Take your hand off that button? Is
it? Is it a fitting conclusionto the dead Pool trilogy? Yeah?
Yeah it is. Man. Theythey did the movie Justice and if you
like U Ryan Reynolds and any ofthe other previous movies, you're gonna love
(01:30):
it because the comedy is there. The sarcasm is really really thick. As
a guy who will specialized PhD asarcasm bit you an all brought player head
a degree, you are going togoing to love it. Okay, it
was awesome. But can I giveyou one little spoiler? Just one?
Is it essential to the plot? Some cameos? Oh? Well, I
(01:55):
assume there are cameos. Cameos. That's that's as far as you know.
You don't know how hard is itit is for me to not tell something
right now? Is one of themmusically themed? I'm not telling you that.
Okay, I'm not a future you'veheard a rumor. Listen, I
heard a rumor. Gret, Gret, Do you want me to answer his
(02:15):
question? No, and neither doall of our listeners. Okay, find
six six times here. I'll tellme to shut up right now. Training
camp today, yes, you knowwe're out there. Had a little bit
news. Cortland Sutton got spiffed alittle on his contract. Yeah, they
add a little bit of incentives onthere. It's not the rom with incentivizing
production. Well, yeah, that'sthe thanks for coming and not holding out.
(02:36):
And oh, by the way,we're still not letting you leave and
we're not up re upping your contract. But what we will do is give
you some escalators in here if youhave to have a good season. Well,
you know that's what you want.Even though it did not work out
where you know Cortland is getting maybejustin Jefferson contract, but just to know
that the relationship is on the men'sright, yeah, talking to one another.
(03:00):
And Courtland didn't hold out. Heshowed up for mandatory mini camp.
He showed up for the beginning oframp up period, right, and we
see what's happening out in San Francisco'sguys are holding out, guys are holding
in. So I think the teamis trending in a great direction. Yeah,
I think from a player's perspective,good for him. I don't think
(03:21):
that the relationship there with the organization. I mean, I think it's pretty
clear the writings on the wall thatthis will be Courtland Sutt's last season at
Denver. But listen, it worksout. The whole idea was trying to
eliminate somewhat of a distraction, right, I think they did. He showed
up, it was a distraction. They gave him a million and a half
extra an incentives like, if youcan make this thing happen, here you
(03:44):
go and everybody theoretically is happy. That's right, because Courtland still has an
opportunity to try to post better numbersthan he did last year. I think
his hint touchdowns, Yeah, lastyear and the last time a Broncos receiver
did that, I mean we gotDerrick in the Ark for that one.
I think it was at Manuo Sanderswith ten touchdowns. That was a while
ago. Though it's been a while. It doesn't feel like it's been a
(04:08):
lot, but it really has been. It's been a while. But so
it gives both individuals an opportunity toget what they want out of the situation.
Training Camp officially kicks off in thesense that fans get to come out
and observe tomorrow and starting tomorrow atfive a m. KOA, obviously,
the official home of the Broncos, will be live from Roncos Training Camp through
August sixteenth. KOA at Training Campis powered by the Sporty Pickle Bar and
(04:33):
Grill and Chevron Colorado Sporty Pickle Man. I looked into this thing last night.
It really does have like it's gotlike pickleball courts that are glow in
the dark. They got karaoke, they got food, they got they got
drinks, they got all that stuff. I'm gonna have to go check this
place down. Now here's my question, because you mentioned last night the black
light had to turn things off,So it's some kind of like cosmic pickleball
black light thing going on, right, I mean, my question is when
(04:57):
you walk in, are the lightsalready off? Oh, at a certain
point they just turned. Oh youknow what on Barry White, He's turned
down the line. Ye turn Yes. That was the golden there of R
and B. Right when the singerwould talk to the you know here in
the Bedlins. Well Kurt Franklin stilldoes that on his track. Yeah,
but it's more gospel. It isit is to be fair. But I
(05:19):
I yeah, then when they hitthe narrator going along and you'd be like,
you know, you'd be sitting therelike all right, you know,
I said, shut the do I'msorry man, Well you know, turn
off. I'm sorry, sorry, get right to that. I'm bad man.
Is they talking back to the recordplayer? Give me an instructions.
I'm just saying. Five six sixtynine zero is the text line. No
(05:39):
hitter today in baseball, don ceaseof the San Diego Podres. The Dad's
the fathers. If you were uhthrough a no hitter second in Podreis history,
Joe Musgrave through the first in twentytwenty one. Second no hitter this
season in Major League Baseball, uhand marks the three hundred and twenty fourth
hitter of all high no hitter ofall time somebody put on the sheet?
(06:02):
Is no hitter a big deal?I think it's a bigger deal now than
it used to be because you havepitchers that just don't pitch as much as
they used to. No, theythey don't specially if you got pitch counts.
He used to hundred pitches. Dude, like Nolan Ryan would have laughed
at you if you tried to pullhim at ninety four pitches. They pulled
Paul Skins earlier this year. Nohitder through seven innings. Yeah, that's
that's absurd to me. You knowthat, that's phenomenal, especially when you
(06:23):
think about the number of great hittersin today's game, and to actually throwing
no hitter, I mean you're caringon play from the outfield as well,
right, and to see guys stillbe able to do that, that that's
amazing. Now, I'll say this, what you want to see one of
(06:44):
those type of guys like consistently herein coursefield, wouldn't that be awesome?
But that's gonna be that's hard todo here in Colorado because the ball is
going to fly here at Colorado. Then also, you know, beautiful park
course field it is, but man, it's so many gaps out there,
(07:06):
right, there's so many gaps outthere. But I mean, great for
him, great for him, ButI would love to see some of that
in Rockies bullpit. I'm just saying, yeah, I would I would love
to see that it was somebody talkingabout it not being a big deal with
it. I mean, man,I you know Bill said it wasn't a
big deal. There's there's some somenarratives out there apparently. Do you like
that conversation starter courtesy of Grant Smithand the Bolo Time. Yeah, I
(07:30):
think I agree with you, Ben. I think it's a bigger deal than
ever because of the limits they puton pitchers nowadays, right, And I
mean, you know that's why youdon't see him as many as many anymore.
I mean, you know, yougo back to what was it,
nineteen ninety one, that was theyear roller no Ryan had his seventh to
no hitter. I think there werelike seven no hitters that year, you
know him, I know, TommyGreen, Dennis Martinez, Wilson, Alberts,
(07:51):
Britz Sabreag and Old had him. There were a couple of combined no
hitters that year. But I Iyeah, to me, it feels like
it's a it's a bigger deal.Although it felt like to me, if
I remember right, that the eightiesjust didn't have a lot of them.
Eighties was a big it felt likea big hit era, you know.
And I think it's just for whateverreason, there weren't that many no hitters
(08:11):
in the nineteen eighties. Well,a no hitter is very rare, and
it's one of those things where everyonein the stadium where you're root, whether
you are part of the home teamor you are the way team, and
you're rooting against that particular picture. It is something that's part of baseball.
Since it's so rare, it fireseveryone up. I mean, you're on
the edge of your seat. Ishe going to complete it? Is he
(08:35):
not? And who's going to getthat first hit? So for me,
this is why I love the factof seeing the no hitter and knowing how
rare it is. So I waslike a unicorna if you will, right,
if you are pictured, And Idon't know how many pictures have like
like a record of no hitters, and I'm thinking that there's not too many
(08:58):
because it is so rare of thething to accomplish and happening your resume as
a pitcher. So it is agreat thing for the picture, the fan
base, and the game of baseballfor a guy to throw a no hitter.
There were only thirteen no hitters thrownin the nineteen eighties thirteen total thirteen
in the nineteen eighties. That's whyI looked this up. Well, that
(09:20):
was that that sound? Was itnot the the juice era where everyone was
juicing? Well, eighties and nineties, Yeah, before they knew everyone was
yeah, right before they knew, before they that before they got caught by
the outside eye admitted, and itis. I mean, it's just kind
of funny because most of those nohitters came before. It came before in
(09:41):
nineteen eighty four or before after that. You know, you only had what
four no hitters in between eighty five, eighty six, eighty seven, eighty
eight, eighty nine. Well, you know what, once again, here's
the thing that makes a no hitter, specially because obviously baseball went through a
dog period where guys were juicing becausethey wanted to get the payday, right,
and then also think about you know, just just competition itself, right,
(10:05):
competing with other pitchers and trying tosubmit yourself in that small class,
that small group of guys, becauseI mean, guys can make All Star
games, guys can win you know, a trophy, right, and you
need the highest time in baseball. But there's only a select group, is
(10:26):
you know, what And I don'twant to undermine it by by mentioning this.
And it might not be the idealconvent, but it's like the Hall
of Fame. But you get guyswho go to Pro Bowls, win Super
Bowls. But I mean, youare the Krim de la crim of guys
who get in the Pro Football Hallof Fame. To me, that's kind
of equivalent because there are not toomany people who can actually do this right,
(10:48):
and a lot of them. Imean, you had forty three no
hitters of the three hundred and twentyfour recorded, and some of these are
combined no hitters just one pitcher likeCse went the whole the whole way,
but forty three of them before theformation of the American League. Forty three
there's no hitters came before nineteen ohone. Wow, So you throw a
(11:09):
no hitter, you're in. You'rean elite company. These days, I
think that gets glossed over a littlebit just how difficult that is. And
the fact that Nolan Ryan through sevenof them is absurd. Two of them
in the nineties when he was likeway past forty two no hitters, three
more than anyone else ever, Iknow, it's absolutely ridiculous. No,
Nola Ryan's career, that's you.If you watched it that documentary they did
(11:33):
not too long ago on him,it was it's pretty good. If you
get a chance to watch it,you should watch it. But yeah,
Nolan Ryan threw his seventh no hitterin like nineteen ninety one. That's crazy.
See, puts you in a certaincategory of player within your sport that
you can say, Hey, listen, I'm in this group, and I'm
(11:56):
one of five, I'm one offifteen, right, and that's a unique
group, and you have so manyguys trying to get to that particular point.
Okay, this, would you ratherthrow a no hitter? You know
what? No, forget that becauseI already mentioned the answer my own question.
(12:18):
What I was gonna ask you, would you rather throw be one of
those guys who throw a no hitter? Or whether you would you rather be
a guy who was a pitcher ona team that won a championship but you
didn't pitch as well. I wouldrather win a championship than anything else,
even if you're a pitcher sucked.No, I don't care if I have
(12:39):
a forty era. If we wonthe World Series, like I was on
that team. Yeah, but youdidn't do anything. I was on that
team. We got there, Ifilled some innings. That's a different than
just being a fan in the standand say I bought a T shirt that
said, you know, a championship. They didn't participate, They weren't out
there on the field. Well, you were just there, No different than
them standing in the stands. Theypaid to come once the game, Well
(13:00):
I got paid, you got abird's eye view paid. But do they
get how in my scenario you didn'tcontribute. Well, you said I pitched
poorly, Not that I didn't pitchwell. That that's just like not being
that I filled it any I'm justsaying, then you hindered your team's chance
to win a championship. More. No, they rallied around because of my
performance. Oh that is so terrible. He was saying, we have to
work hard. Yes, I'm justsaying, you know you would choose winning
(13:26):
a championship on the roster where youdid absolutely nothing but have a great seat
to watch your team celebrate, opposedto throwing a no hitter. Do you
think Letco Kankar cares about going outthere and dropping forty What he's got a
ring. We're talking about different people. Mentality is just saying, Grant,
Grant, help me out here.Do you want to win your chamions?
(13:46):
Wait? Wait, let Grant answer. Do you want to be on a
team that won a championship but youdidn't contribute a damn thing? You want
to be? I mean, what'swhat's the gratification in that? I would
rather be on the championship team. You got to be on the championship team.
Yeah. Do you think Jack Whitecares? He s he should?
(14:09):
What kind of stories will Jack theman plays three point nine minutes per game
seventeen games or the nugget championship season? Okay? What kind of stories?
Glory stories will he tell? Onlythat people mistake him for the dude that
was in the White stripes. See, no one wants to be Jack White,
Jack White and the White stripes. That's different. That's different. Though
(14:31):
I would have been on the teamjust winning a championship. I want to
say I contribute something. No,carry me, It's fine. Crowd stories.
You gonna tell a crowd surf toa championship. I was went on
some of the greatest teammates ever. That's terrible. You think Christian Lader hates
the gold medal he won on theDream Team. He should he did that.
(14:54):
That thing is center display. Seethis, this is just just like
you bet you lowering the bar right, You're supposed to set the ball high.
No, you set the bar lower. You can always clear it.
You set the expectation level loose, you can always clear it. That's the
loser's mentality to me. I thinkI win every time because I cleared the
bar because the standards are so freakinglow that can My standards are so low
(15:16):
you can't limbo under them. Maybeif you were an aunt or a spider
you could. They're that lowe yousqueeze. I got people on the text
line asking about ducking a moment Collegefootball twenty five I met. I'm in
a training camp and working around.Yes see, you gotta tell me.
Get on Twitter and send me oruse your name on Twitter, because I'll
(15:37):
save it there and then I cango back and get it. It's the
problem is what it's here on thetext line, like, I'll forget it
by the time I get home.Write it down with what Hold on for
a second, I don't have it. I don't have a writing utensil.
Oh, well there's like five ofthem there. My bad. Now you
have no excuse. I gave youthree pins and one pencil. As somebody
(15:58):
on the textlite makes a good point, Peyton Manning was carried to a championship
in twenty fifteen. Do you thinkhe cares about that? Wait a minute,
I mean, even though the defensedid a lot, Peyton handed the
ball off, he did, infact handed the ball off. Isn't that's
the same thing as I was justtalking about with Phil and Innings. No
it's not. You're not gymnastics.No it's not. It's you on the
(16:22):
text line right now. Peyton Mannerwas carried to a championship. But Peyton
did something he did that that chargedhis game when he when he went out
there when they pulled brought Os Waller, you know, the fans started cheering.
Yeah, And Coach Pegana was like, gosh, Dawn it because you
said the Sunshine cares about any ofthat, Drew and Taylor, you know
what I'm talking about. He caresabout any of that. He said,
(16:47):
I won a super Bowl with PeytonManning. He goes in wherever he's got,
he's got to kiss the ring andthen saying the first thing, and
I was like, well, whatdid you do? I helped Peyton Manning
recover from you know, and getback to a championship for him. Ch
don't underestimate that that was very valuable. There was one on one workout.
Contribute anything, well, I saidyou in this scenario, you didn't.
(17:11):
I don't know. I like tothink I'm always contributing. Yeah right,
yeah, I mean you know,I mean we're when we're watching it practice.
Am I not contributing to the comedicatmosphere of practice by firing off all
these jokes? Well, it wasalready established today when me, you and
Ryan were out there. I foundout how low your bar really is.
Yes, I thought it was kindof low. But you think it's a
(17:33):
whole different loads painted on the ground, Yes, you can't it Ben lives
here, painted on the pavement.I'm just I mean, it's you know,
at the end of the day,you say, Chase Daniel cares about
any of that? Do you evercontribute to anything? Ever? Meanwhile,
meanwhile, he's huge McDuck vault.Yes, he contributed his bank account.
(17:56):
He's over in the Chase Daniel,Chase, Chase Daniel's gouge McDuck vault.
Come man, going to rubber bandman. I'm just saying, yes,
you know, but some people arebuilt different. I want to know that
I contributed, that I did somethingwell, my presence being there contributed in
(18:17):
some way. No at that Iwas a straw that starved the drinking.
I'm sorry. I might not.I might not be the sugar. I
might not be the kool aid packet. Maybe I'm the wooden spoon. Is
stern. That's like being in themarriage and you just there right, You're
not contributes to the marriage. You'renot making her feel like she's part of
something, you know, giving awhispering sweet and nothing's in her ear.
(18:38):
You're just there by title alone. That's it. Have problem with it.
Breandan Cristal would come back, Welcomeback to it. Broncos Country Tonight,
Benjamin o Albrighten, Nick Ferguson,Grant Smith here with you, bring on
our UK Broncos Beat reporter Brandon ChristaalBrandon, Uh, are you with me
on this or you with Nick onthis? You rather win the championship or
(18:59):
would you read to be somebody whocontributed but didn't want a championship. I'd
rather win the championship. I wantthe ring, you know, I think
about I think about Rusty LaRue,who you have to dig deep into your
trivia vault. But he was aquarterback, baseball player and hooper at wake
Forest, And if I'm not mistaken, I think he has three rings with
the Bulls. And I'm not surehe played a minute in any of those
finals. I'll double check that.But I understand what you're what you're saying,
(19:22):
and there's a compelling argument both ways. But you want to be a
contributors if you go all the wayto the Hall of Fame, like Hall
of Famer, you know, DanMarino type, someone like that, Charles
Barkley, Karl Malone, or aguy that has a ring like Zeke Naji.
Right, that's what I was, like car Cares. It's actually pronounced
chawan jar. But uh, we'lllet that you played some minutes. I
(19:45):
haven't learned the pronunciation, and I'mnot I'm not mad at you for that.
So Samirnaga, not gonna work, not gonna work here anymore. Heyka,
you were out there probably been thepractice last two days. We talked
a little bit of more we've seenwhat he what has jumped out at I
mean, obviously we're not in padsyet, but what has jumped at you
so far? There's a climatization periodthe tempo, right because you're expecting it.
(20:07):
And maybe it's just because I'm notreally ready for the start of football
season. And maybe it's because I'llbe there at five am tomorrow and every
single morning with Colorado's Morning News outat our broadcast location there at Broncos Park,
powered by Common Spirit. But Iwas expecting it to go a little
slower, and stuff is happening fast, and I think that's exciting because you
(20:30):
can't always tell when you flip onNFL Network, ESPN or whatever and you're
seeing what's going on in other camps, you can only kind of, you
know, compare it to what's goingon in front of you, and what's
going on in front of us beyondthe obvious QB competition and of course Lucas
Kroll in his domination through the springand now into training camp. I'm not
sure. And I'll be in camponactually for Randy Gratischar's enshrine it next weekend,
(20:52):
so i'll see. I'll talk totheir architects and see if there is
a Lucaskroll kind of conversation happening about, you know, a potential area where
you can honor what will, noquestion be the best tight end to ever
play football. Sorry Gronk and TonyGonzalez and Travis Kelce, but Lucas Crol's
coming for your crown. But untilhe gets there, I think it's the
tempo is the thing that stood outto me, and the fact that I
(21:14):
feel like they're not gonna say it, but this there's almost no scenario where
we're not gonna see Bownicks winning thestarting job. I think it becomes a
question of when, not if.Well Colin Sudden, I mean this,
this guy had a sensational season lastyear and there was a lot of rumors
and whispers as far as what wasgonna happen with Colin specially leading up to
(21:37):
the draft. But he's he didn'treally get a new contract, but he's
got some extra incentives. What doesit mean for the Denver Broncos and that
that young receiving cords who know thatColan is around, if only for another
season, it's I think probably callme and for a young quarterback as well,
if you know, if it whin, it's Bonicks, or whether it's
(22:00):
Jared s Didham who still qualifies asa young quarterback, or Zach Wilson.
But again, I'm going to justcontinue to operate under the assumption that's going
to be Bonick's until proven otherwise. But it's a guy that you know,
especially on a fifty to fifty ballor when you're in or near the red
zone, you like his chances asmuch as really anybody in the league.
And he's proven that. You know, he caught ten touchdowns last year and
Nick, but it wasn't like hewas running away from people, and I
(22:22):
think that's probably part of the reasonthat he's still here. There weren't people
beating the Broncos door down, notthat there weren't conversations that were had,
and I got to think some real, you know, conversations we had between
he and his agent and people aroundthe league. He's kind of paid about
what you would think. Yes,to ten touchdowns is certainly remarkable, But
they didn't come because he was justdominating. They came because he and Russell
(22:47):
Wilson could find each other when Russewas scrambling around and hucked the ball up
right, the Bills touchdown on Monday. Football kind of encapsulated a lot in
a lot of ways of season, right, because he didn't even have eight
hundred yards receiving, And you can'tpay a guy north of twenty million like
the top receivers get on most teams, you know, especially that those real
A one receivers are north of twentyfive. Now, that doesn't get you
(23:08):
over a thousand yards. And especiallybecause there were opportunities. It wasn't like
they didn't throw the ball. Andso I think that from a leadership standpoint,
we know how vocal he is,we know how much the young players
gravitate towards both he and Tim Patrick. And that's why I'm hopeful that Tim
Patrick continues on only make catches likehe made today, but they figure out
ways to use Tim and Cortland together. That's gonna be one of the harder
(23:30):
decisions. It's figuring out which sixish receivers you're keeping on the active roster
to start the year, especially ifTim Patrick shows enough. And Sean Payton
talked about that yesterday, right,He's like, I don't have to see
it every day, but I stillhave to see it. And they're not
paying him anything. But when Timwent down a couple of years ago,
I know we've talked to those guys. I had people tell me that he's
not just the heart and soul ofthat receiver room. He's a heart and
(23:52):
soul of their offense. If not, you know, the entire team.
And so he'd lose him for notone year, but two. Can't he
get back to anywhere to what hewas. We're all pulling for him.
But having Cortland and Tim I thinksettles things down a little bit, especially
if they both can can really contributeand maximize whatever their skill set currently is
or whatever their physical you know, physical attributes will allow him at this point
(24:14):
in their careers. Yeah, butI mean, you've got a room that
looks fairly crowded when all said anddone, no doubt. You know,
Josh Reynolds was brought in, Yougot Marvin Mims, Tim and Courtley.
We talked about, Brandon Johnson hascontributed, Little Jordan Humphrey figures to be
around at some point. You draftedTroy Franklin, you drafted Devon Valet,
who's admittedly old for rookie, mightbe asking for Joe Biden, what advice
to do it at that advanced agefor his position. You've got Jalen Virgil
(24:37):
who's still trying to make the teamfill the dorset, David Sales, Michael
Bandiaman, we can keep going. It feels a little crowded. I guess
the question here I'm leading to is, was there any part of this that
was, Hey, we don't wantCourtland Sutton going to Pittsburgh to reunite with
Russ Maybe there's some of that becauseyou let him go and he has another
eight to ten touchdown season, especiallybecause we know they lost Deontay Johnson and
(25:00):
you're saying, okay, well, the Steelers who under Mike Tomlin managed to
not only finish five hundred and makethe playoffs a lot of years, including
last year when it was a disasterwith you know, Kenny Pickett Mason,
if I say a disaster, butthat's definitely the worst starting quarterback situation of
any of the fourteen playoff teams. And that's why they think they upgraded between
Russ Inn and Justin Field. SoI think there's some of that, and
(25:21):
it's it's fair market value, right, He's a guy that had ten touchdowns
and is a leader and is abig target, but he's not a front
line receiver right now until he provesotherwise that he can get back to that
pre acl tair form that got himinto the Pro Bowl when he was I
think trending in that direction. Youknow, it's funny because when Shawn comes
(25:42):
in, you look at Michael Thomasin recent years, especially when he was
obviously really good and really healthy. He and Courtland are basically the exact same
size. Courtland ran a couple hundredto a second faster, but they're I
mean, same height, same weight. I know they're not the exact same
player, and Michael Thomas is ahell of a route runner, but you
thought I might be on that kindof trend, and then the injury kind
of derailed things and quarterback situations andplay calling and all that. But I
(26:07):
think it's ultimately a good thing ona team that's certainly trending younger. When
you lose leaders like Josie Jewel andJustin Simmons at the top of the list
in terms of leadership losses on bothsides of the ball, and Russ's leadership
too, for for better or worse, but to have Portland rounds ultimately a
good thing. Well, bkay,we we're up against the we got any
traffic, but we always appreciate it. Look forward to getting you on here
(26:27):
more during the season and chat itup on what these Broncos are doing.
I can't wait. I can't waitto see what Lucas Croll does tomorrow either.
Absolutely gonna be all staggering, laserfocused at five am. You will
see me there looking forward to catchit up with his report down here.
And Broncos came out not getting outthere at five am. That's definitely poop,
(26:51):
said, let's go. It's atraffic center and checker with Derek Gobsen.
Well, you know what's not poopis to drive out there right now.
So good news. The tempos, the think that stood out to me
and the fact that I feel likethey're not going to say it, but
there's almost no scenario where we're notgoing to see bow Nick's winning the starting
job. I think it becomes aquestion of when that is. Welcome back
(27:11):
to it, Broncos Country tonight,Benjamin Albright, Nick Ferguson, Grant Smith
here with you. Thanks to BredyChristol for joining us there for a few
minutes will be k on once aweek getting reports from down their training camp
as well. Looks like another goodday for Look a good day for otter
guestimy out there a little bit.Get to see the big fellow doing a
little bit of work. Obviously padsaren't on, but he's noticeable when he's
(27:33):
on the field versus the other.Right, the very first day, the
running backs as a group stood rightin front of us with this new drill
that if they were doing, whichyou know, I had never seen in
my time I either plan a coaching, but it is in good Drew.
Nonetheless, but a lot of thoseguys, man, no pads on,
they look dick, they look silent, And the first thing I thought,
(27:56):
you know, me being a safety, was like wow, man, that
group as a whole could be veryintimidating for an opposing defense, especially if
the offensive line jails in the secondyear together and with the running backs that
they have, Man, is goingto be very interesting. The other part
(28:17):
is going to be interesting is comecut down time. Who makes the team
right? Because if you not inRB one or RB two, you're going
to have to play a boat loadof special teams. The vision was pretty
clear. You know this is aguy. When we did all the study
on the studies on him, youknow, we took fifteen yard runs or
more first in his class minus runs. You know sometimes running backs that runs
(28:44):
where they don't first in his class. Real good vision in the hole.
Rarely did you see a player loseyards. You had good feet for someone
who was two hundred and twenty pounds, So I saw runner first and value
on when we took him. Hewas one of those guys that I really
like when the draft started. Everyonce in a while there's a player you'd
(29:07):
say, when this thing's all overwith, I'd love to have this player.
And fortunately we were able to getthis player. John Payton talking about
Otter guest today, he gotta hekind of reminds you's got that that that
thick build for running back. Youknow, it's almost that throwback build because
you see a lot of you seea lot of smaller, quicker, nimbler
pass catching you know what we callweb backs, whatever backs you know these
(29:30):
days, and the the of coursethere there is a Derrick Henry, but
there's only one Derrick Henry. Butthat build that's squatty, thick. I'm
gonna bash you in the mouth.Build he's he's got that, he's got
it. He looks like a bowlingball with knives sticking out of it,
you know when he's out there.Well, that's that running back you want
(29:52):
in those third down short yardist situations, especially more importantly inside the red zone.
And that's something that we didn't reallysee the Broncos do a lot last
season running down in that red zone, imposing their will on imposing defenses.
And I got to tell you, man, as a former defensive player,
there's nothing more demoralizing than knowing ateam is going to run the ball and
(30:15):
you're putting as many guys in thebox as possible and you can't do a
damn thing about it. Yeah, and he looks like one of those guys
that maybe that if you look theway Sean Payton builds backfields, you know,
he's probably going to be a guythat gets featured sort of in the
Latavious Murray role of the Sean Payneand maybe the Pierre Thomas roll kind of
thing. I just want Telby leadback. Tolo will get the Sprowls role,
(30:37):
He'll get his eight to ten.You know, touches a game,
and then you're gonna have somebody elsewho's eating up short yardage, you know
those kinds of things. Or assaultedaway guy too, you know the guy
you need a grinder that consulted awayand he looks like he's got the build
for that. You know, usuallywhen we talk about defensive player, especially
guys in interior, there's a termine. The phrase that always comes up.
A guy is heavy handed. Rightwhen I look at estimate for me,
(31:00):
he runs heavy and I know he's, you know, two undred and twenty
pounds, but that was a guythat he's going to really lean on you.
It reminds me of watching le GarrettBlunt, Yeah, when he played
That's what I mean. Yes,Like that first defender may slow him down,
but that second one that's coming in, he's he's having a thug in
(31:21):
his head, like do I reallywant to do this? Do they pay
me enough to get in the wayof that locomotive? To me, that's
the run game that I feel theBroncos are trying to build, one of
those run games that you're saying,Man, we got to play these guys
again and for four quarters and knowingthat they're gonna tote the Rocks the same
way the Broncos used to sit andlook over the other side. See Josh
(31:41):
Jacobs over there. Yes, yes, it's the same same thing. You
gotta stop giving him the damn ballwhen we come back, Ryan Michael
