Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to it, Broncos Country tonight. But with all Brian
Dick Ferguson, Grant Smith, it's a Hall of Famer, Steve that.

Speaker 2 (00:05):
Or do we call you? Do we call you coach?
Ferg Do we call you? Do we call your Scotty?
We just call you intern.

Speaker 1 (00:09):
I don't really know what the title game is here.
I want to make sure we get this right.

Speaker 2 (00:13):
No, you call me Nick Fergusonick Ferguson.

Speaker 3 (00:15):
That's what my aka doctor love, Yes, doctor feel good, doctor.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
Feel I'm not calling you that, Nicholas. I'm not calling you.
You don't call you that. I don't know. I'm not
calling you that. That's not happened. It was like the
cool Jay, but it was like you call me just
a good barn.

Speaker 3 (00:31):
But no, Yes, most people, even though my government name
is Nicholas, no one calls me that. Anyone who's played
with me, they don't even call me Nick. They call
me Nico's because John Lynch started calling me that and
everyone since then.

Speaker 2 (00:47):
That's how they referred to me. So what do you prefer?

Speaker 3 (00:51):
I mean, as long as you don't call me out
my name, I mean I'll take anything.

Speaker 1 (00:56):
Yeahs I never read an issue with that Ben and
Benjamin like it was all right so much because football
was always all right. That army it was all bright.
So it was always like my last name. Most people
call him my last name, then by my first name,
but most people not for very long.

Speaker 2 (01:10):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (01:11):
I'll tell you what I have small out either, So
cut that Benchi stuff out of you.

Speaker 3 (01:15):
Why did you get upset if someone calls you betty
because that goes well with the Elton johnsone Benny and
the Jets.

Speaker 2 (01:20):
Yeah, I ain't on the Jets. I ain't write and
hit songs. Don't say that one again. I ain't Benny.
Ain't Benny he did. That's a little little little sensitive
because I don't know.

Speaker 3 (01:32):
My teammates would call me, you know, fur delicious, right,
and usually you think you don't never want to refer
to another man and issues.

Speaker 2 (01:41):
Yes, I called him Steve Delicious. Ones next week they
called me lumba.

Speaker 4 (01:53):
Yes, yes, for the longest time my whole career, bro,
I thought I thought it was something good, but love
it Lumba.

Speaker 2 (02:00):
Yeah, that is.

Speaker 4 (02:04):
Thet they meant like lumbered around though, No, yeah, when
they when I when Dennis retired, he told me that man.

Speaker 2 (02:11):
We call you Lomba because you was stiff. Come on, wow, man,
bro I heard too right, brother bringing the woods.

Speaker 3 (02:23):
Man, I would think some of your safety and they
said one lumbering man.

Speaker 2 (02:29):
I didn't know something because when they was saying a
couple of the old man, you laughed a little too much.
Five six sixty nine zeros.

Speaker 1 (02:41):
The text line Steve at water in studio with us,
so we gotta bred a cristalot later as well. Nick
obviously been the listeners may not know this because I
kept it under wraps. Okay, but Nick's been doing a
scouting internship here with the dever Broncos. Yeah, you know what,
You're gonna spill all the secrets right now on this show.

Speaker 2 (02:58):
Where is your loyalty?

Speaker 3 (02:59):
Nick?

Speaker 2 (02:59):
No, I'm not gonna do that. You don't want to
get You don't want to get your piscel right.

Speaker 1 (03:06):
Innos park spirit right now, sitting here trying to try
to get state secrets.

Speaker 2 (03:09):
It's never gonna happen. Look a window, well I really
looked for Steve looked right, you know.

Speaker 3 (03:22):
But big shout out to you because there wasn't too
many people who knew about that, and you kind of
kept it on the raps.

Speaker 2 (03:28):
You and I talked about it, but it's been great, man.

Speaker 3 (03:32):
And this is a different way to see the game
of football because when we look at it, it's it's
football business and then there's a business of football.

Speaker 2 (03:39):
And you know, most.

Speaker 3 (03:42):
Fans, and I'll say this for most people who cover
this team in this media, you figure out how much
they don't know the right They think they know, but
they really don't know because there's so many things that.

Speaker 2 (03:56):
Go into it. Not only don't they know, they don't
know what they don't know. Yes, you know, that's the
biggest thing. I think that's one of the things because.

Speaker 1 (04:02):
I mean, you know, there's there's already as players, there's
already you guys know the media they know a little here,
they know this. They don't really understand this kind of
stuff that you know. But then you get inside on
the other side of it and both you know, it's
a Brandon Bassard Nos' just gotta intern all that kind
of stuff.

Speaker 2 (04:16):
Like you there's there are other aspects.

Speaker 1 (04:18):
Of that that you see that that and you could
start to look around the market back that guy's full
of crap.

Speaker 4 (04:23):
Oh yeah, oh yeah, I will say, yeah, you can tell,
you can tell.

Speaker 2 (04:26):
Yeah, I will say this. I had a love of
football before. To get you.

Speaker 3 (04:31):
It's kind of rammed it up even more it through
the light of flack.

Speaker 2 (04:35):
You've always been like this though, Yeah, I have, But
this is different. Different. The reason is.

Speaker 3 (04:45):
Different because well, you're not playing, but you are watching film.
You're breaking other people down. So the evaluation part of
it goes to a whole different love when you find
out how different you know, the coaching side of it,
which I've done that before, in the scouting side, they're similar,

(05:07):
but at the same time they're still kind of different.

Speaker 1 (05:09):
I won't want to say this real quick, because we
did get a text message in that said, guys, you
need to rename the show Benny and the Jets because
Nick and Steve are Jets legends.

Speaker 2 (05:18):
No, wow, that's that's from hold On, they get the
name or that is from that is from Ryan in Parker. Okay, Ryan,
I'm come to see you, miss Ryan. That Ryan okay, Ryan?
All right? Yeah, team's like all right, I see you
practice tomorrow. Look at what was that? What would you

(05:42):
say that? Again? What would what would you say?

Speaker 4 (05:44):
Though?

Speaker 1 (05:44):
It is like the biggest misconception, Uh, you know about
you're inside the building now you know you're doing that
kind of stuff, and you know, I see at the
practice and all that kind of stuff. Was what's the
biggest misconception that media people have when tried to cover
this team, because I you know, I look at this
and I see everybody's obsessed with the quarterback thing right now.
Obviously so right, but there are certain aspects of playing quarterback.
I think that the media doesn't even focus so out

(06:06):
there this seed to throw in the catch and all
that kind of stuff, and that's a final part of
being a quarterback.

Speaker 2 (06:11):
I'm looking at this, I'm like, Okay, who's setting.

Speaker 1 (06:14):
The table right right down? We're down there doing team
Who's setting the table at this one? Is this guy
just is this guy having the coach come over here
point this stuff out? Is this guy seeing what's says
and little things like that? And for me, that's that's
the difference that that I look at But being on
what are things that you're noticing that maybe fans media
aren't picking up on.

Speaker 2 (06:31):
We're not getting into specifics. You can't get it too well.

Speaker 3 (06:34):
When you look at the quarterback position, everyone falls in
love with the guy that's drafted in the first round
and there's a significant amount of pressure put on that
guy to go out and perform well. And I know,
coming into the season idea it was like, well, if
bo Nicks doesn't start, then he's a bus right out
of the gate. And I'm like, well, that's the stupidest
thing I've ever heard, because we've seen quarterbacks fail because

(06:57):
it's not just about what they're do on the field,
but it's what happens above the neck, and that's confidence.

Speaker 2 (07:03):
Every player needs to play with confidence.

Speaker 3 (07:05):
And for me, I think the best thing for bow
would be to kind of let him gradually ease into
the state. And so what if stead Of starts the
first preseason game. What if Steadham is named the starter
for the road game against Seattle.

Speaker 2 (07:19):
I think that's a good ticket. That's great.

Speaker 3 (07:21):
Yes, you want your quarterback to play with confidence, right,
and even if that means you got to bring him
alone slowly, that's fine. But because this fan base has
been thirsty quarterback thirsty for so many years, they're like,
let's take.

Speaker 2 (07:35):
Him and throw him out there. Yeah, we did both.
He's a waste of reps.

Speaker 3 (07:38):
Yes, It's like no, And to say, even if you
do it any fails, It's okay because it's a growing process.

Speaker 2 (07:44):
Real quick.

Speaker 1 (07:45):
Broncos Country and Denver enter now to an a pair of
twenty twenty four Broncos season tickets from Kowa. Your next
chance to enter is gonna be Colorado's Morning News tomorrow
he thirty to nine. All you gotta do right now
is called THREELL three seOne, three eighty five eighty five.
And let Grant know what Steve's nickname was in the
locker room.

Speaker 4 (08:02):
He just told it to you. You should know it
unless you weren't.

Speaker 2 (08:06):
This so they weren't paying attention. Got be listening.

Speaker 1 (08:08):
And the next chance the win's gonna be tomorrow morning
between eight thirty nine on Colorado's Morning News.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
We do have a game coming up this week. Yes,
how are you? How are you?

Speaker 1 (08:16):
Coach Payton obviously a notorious Preppers he prepping for this one.
And the reason that I asked that is because we
play the Colts in the regular season as well.

Speaker 2 (08:25):
Yeah, no, this is preseason.

Speaker 3 (08:28):
This is just because the whole idea is that you
this is evaluation carry over from training camp. You want
to see if those guys can actually go out and play,
don't forget that this team is full of young guys.
I want to see guys cut a loose on Sunday.
Just go out there and make plays. And even if
you make a mistake, so what, move on to the
next play. But it's about making sure the guys can

(08:50):
go out and they can play fast and you have
something to evaluate them from.

Speaker 1 (08:53):
Do you guys remember your first preseason game? How nervous
were you first NFL person game.

Speaker 4 (08:58):
I wasn't too nervous, but I got a chance to
get some confidence in that game to no today, man,
I can play at this level.

Speaker 2 (09:07):
You know.

Speaker 3 (09:07):
Let me let me see what's your confidence that you received.
Was you smacking someone?

Speaker 2 (09:12):
Yeah? Yeah, exactly.

Speaker 1 (09:15):
Was there a nervousness that you made the first hit
and settle in or were you already settled in?

Speaker 2 (09:19):
It was pretty much settling. You know.

Speaker 4 (09:21):
It's the same thing kind of as it was in college.

Speaker 2 (09:24):
You know, you kind of have your rituals.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
You know your things, you go through before the game,
listen to your music and you know certain stretches and
you know what you're doing the field.

Speaker 2 (09:34):
You run down to the end, do some stretches running back.

Speaker 4 (09:37):
You know, everybody has their own pregame rituals, but that
hopefully gets them ready to play.

Speaker 2 (09:44):
Bro I was different from nervous throw up like the
no no, no, no, I didn't I didn't throw up. You know.

Speaker 3 (09:53):
It's almost like some of the lyrics from uh the.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Sweaty was.

Speaker 3 (10:04):
It was something like that because well, yes, because and
you didn't want to do that. You didn't want to
get out there and forget plays. But sometimes that would
happen because the you look at the stadium, you start
to look around and you see guys who you were
just in college and you watch them play Monday night
football and Sunday night football.

Speaker 2 (10:23):
And you're like, I'm I'm I'm actually here.

Speaker 3 (10:26):
So you you forget that you are there and you
start spectating, right, and being in safety, playing far away
from the ball, you could spectate, but if you spectate
too long, they're going deep, right. So it was kind
of one of those things like man, wow, I mean,
oh oh, they almost threw one to the house. And
then now you come back to where your feet are like,

(10:46):
I need to get into a groove to make sure
that I remain with the team. But I look, man,
I'm really excited for a lot of these young players.

Speaker 2 (10:55):
I want to see and a half. He started to
put it out there over the back pilot. He went
up one hand and pull that thing in. I was like, well,
you know it really quickly.

Speaker 3 (11:05):
You know who he reminds me of, and not saying
that he's going to grow to beat this guy to
be great if he did.

Speaker 1 (11:13):
Keenan Allen, Yeah, was a big possession guy like that
and all that. Yeah, I think he's got a little
bit more vertical than Kean.

Speaker 3 (11:18):
But yeah, yeah, because Keenan wasn't that fast, right, but
he was getting out of his brain. He let geared down. Yeah,
you could definitely get in and out of his breaks.

Speaker 4 (11:27):
I heard that Vele When he was in college though,
he didn't really have great quarterbacking, so he couldn't really
showcase his skills. Now, hopefully he'll get a chance to
really show what he can do.

Speaker 1 (11:37):
Yeah, aged for a rookie, like a fine wine, yeah
something like that, six years old. But you know, yeah,
I'm looking for I think, I mean, outside of the
big four. I think he's the next guy.

Speaker 2 (11:48):
You know.

Speaker 1 (11:48):
I mean, he's looked just as good as impressive as
a guy's like little Jordan, And to my eyes, that
I've seen out there. I think Troy has kind of
been slower to get started. Looks like he struggled with
a jam a little bit. But and certainly get getting
an air ful from John Morton out there.

Speaker 2 (12:03):
On the field. You know, here's the thing.

Speaker 3 (12:05):
I remember when John Morden first kind of made his
presence known.

Speaker 2 (12:11):
And let me tell you so, John Morton announces himself.

Speaker 1 (12:14):
Yes, you know he's out there, like you knew Alex
Gibbs was out there, like you knew Bill Kohlar was
out there.

Speaker 2 (12:19):
You know, when John Morton is out there, I'll say this.
The first time that.

Speaker 3 (12:22):
Happened, you know, media immediately went to their phones and saved,
you know, comments about how coach Morton is on. Sorry Franklin,
but it is with good love that he's doing that.
It's with the purpose. He sees something unique and special
in Troy. And I mean I had Bill Parcells and
for me, I think the heavens that I did go

(12:45):
through New York and I experienced that end of around
so many veteran guys. But yeah, help because yes, because
you get pressed so much to perfection that you have
no choice but to come through.

Speaker 2 (13:00):
I think the other part of that is.

Speaker 1 (13:04):
Knowing that the coach values you enough to give you
that hard coaching.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
Yeah.

Speaker 4 (13:09):
But I can also say this last seeing it go
the other way where coaches are on players, but some
players don't have that big skin.

Speaker 2 (13:17):
But that's the player, though, I'm saying, you have to
develop that mindset.

Speaker 1 (13:22):
He's coaching me hard because he sees something in me
and I'm not getting there.

Speaker 2 (13:27):
But what if the player doesn't see it like that?

Speaker 4 (13:28):
If the player instead of like the NFL not for long,
he's picking.

Speaker 2 (13:32):
On me like me, you know, I mean, not to
be a jerk, but to understand. I've seen that before though.

Speaker 4 (13:40):
Sorry the Michigan Panthers where the players just they didn't
buy into that, you know, they didn't take any criticism.

Speaker 2 (13:47):
But that's the thing I see.

Speaker 1 (13:49):
I think that's the thing that applies universally whether you're
in business.

Speaker 2 (13:51):
I mean, in business, the office a little diff you
can't talk like that. But when I was in the army,
you know, I mean I had when I was you know, little.

Speaker 1 (13:58):
Private Benjamin rolled around some sergeants that had to you know,
they had to get on me at times. And it
may be better for it because I recognize they saws
all ment me and they want to make me recognize
that at the time. Yeah, I'm like, I respond, I've
always responded, well, I mean I may I may have
had a sassy comment or two under my breath.

Speaker 2 (14:15):
I'm not saying I think we all know that I
might have.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
I might have had a little little fireback under my breath.
But like I've always been like that. I've always been
the coach me because when I see you putting effort
into me, whether that's even if it isn't that matter.
If you put effort into me, I'm like, Okay, they
see something to put effort into.

Speaker 2 (14:31):
I got a reward debt by being my best self.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
It reminds me of when you start saying that the
opening scene of Full Metal Jacket.

Speaker 2 (14:38):
Yeah, and you have to be able to push through.

Speaker 3 (14:45):
And I think, Steve, this is where some of the
players today. And it's gonna sound like, you know, hey,
I'm you know, get off my long guy, But it
is true. Some guys don't adhere to that type of coaching,
just like we've guys on a team like that.

Speaker 1 (15:01):
Yeah, I mean we say that. I'm not trying to
say every players like that. Just said if you're going
to succeed, You're gonna have to be like that.

Speaker 2 (15:06):
No, I have to find it.

Speaker 1 (15:07):
You either have to have talent that that allows you
to get away with having that attitude but you're not
like that, yeah, or you.

Speaker 2 (15:13):
Gotta be you gotta have that.

Speaker 4 (15:14):
Yeah, you gotta be you gotta be your dog.

Speaker 3 (15:18):
Here's something that I don't I both know that Steve
and I can speak to. Right, we were both in
New York with Parcels, and Parcels is an acquiet taste.

Speaker 2 (15:31):
Right. That's just one way of putting it.

Speaker 3 (15:32):
Because I always say that there's there's two people, It's
Bill and Coach.

Speaker 2 (15:38):
See now Bill is cool as all get out.

Speaker 3 (15:41):
Well, Coach Parcels you're gonna be like, Man, I don't
want to deal with that.

Speaker 2 (15:45):
But you know what tho.

Speaker 4 (15:46):
From my experience with Coach Parcels, he's fair, tough, but fair.
If if you you come out there and work, he's
gonna get your problems, not even coach.

Speaker 2 (16:00):
You up, of course, but it's not like he treats
some of the rookies.

Speaker 4 (16:04):
That's how some of the rookies man oh man, coach
who this is heavy.

Speaker 2 (16:09):
But hey, you got you gotta have to dixand with him.

Speaker 3 (16:11):
Yeah, if you're not, if you're not ready for it
with him, you might as well grab your ball and
go home.

Speaker 2 (16:17):
Right.

Speaker 3 (16:18):
But that was kind of his test because he knew
the game situation, the in game situations, we're gonna be tough.
Just think about it, Steve and I play safety. If
someone throws one over your head, are you still gonna
be thinking about the two plays later or.

Speaker 2 (16:32):
You try to move on? You gold fishing it and
moving on.

Speaker 3 (16:34):
That's what he was trying to get out, but a
lot of players could not get with that.

Speaker 4 (16:40):
You should be thinking about that, somebody throwing over your head,
You should be thinking.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
About that for the rest of the game, fishing that.
I'm gonna go fishing.

Speaker 1 (16:48):
Fifteen seconds later, that's gone and I'm not letting another
one over.

Speaker 4 (16:50):
Yeah.

Speaker 2 (16:50):
The reason you better let it go because how does
that happen?

Speaker 3 (16:53):
Though?

Speaker 1 (16:54):
Change your instincts though, because if you're harping on that now,
so you're gonna just your play and you're gonna get
You're gonna be moving your depth.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
Look at you up underneath? How does that happen though?
How does what happened? You? Forget it? You know how
does a guy get ban you just let me explain
how you see what a man loves a woman? How
fast he roll fire as ask what was it? What
was it? Beefs? And here your rugs ran? You remember that.

Speaker 5 (17:25):
But if you know that fast you look at tape,
you can let me, Steve think about what you're saying.

Speaker 3 (17:31):
You said if you look at tape, like we know
Johnny Manziel didn't look at tape. We know packs Electend
didn't look at DeMarcus Russell tape. So so you are
hoping that these guys look at tape and also playing
in the secondary. The one thing is that our is
our biggest ally is our biggest enemy.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
Our eyes. Oh you see too much. You're looking at
the backfield. They run a play accident.

Speaker 1 (17:55):
Receive it right right, pack, He's gonna suck you up
on the PA, try to get you down on the
you know, get you down in or he's got the
receiver gearing down at you know, at twelve yards.

Speaker 2 (18:04):
He takes off.

Speaker 4 (18:05):
If you don't know what you're looking at, you cooked anyway.
The coach probably know it already, so you're probably not
gonna be in the game if you don't know what you're.

Speaker 2 (18:11):
Looking at that.

Speaker 3 (18:12):
But that's why we've always seen and we will see this,
you know, on Sunday, hopefully not for the Broncos, but
for the Colts. Two DB's in the end zone with
their hands up.

Speaker 2 (18:22):
Yeah, looked at each other, like look at each other,
you know you each other? Oh, both of them hoping. Man,
I hope that tape shows it's him.

Speaker 4 (18:32):
Oh, some of the games on TV they're like, man,
that was my fault.

Speaker 2 (18:37):
I remember you telling me about that. Broncos Country Tonight
here on KOA. We'll be back after this.

Speaker 1 (18:43):
Welcome back to it, Broncos Country Tonight, Benjamin Albrighten, Nick Ferguson.

Speaker 2 (18:46):
Grant Smith here with you. It's like the guy at
the direct center of the court yell he gave me
the business man. That dude yelled out something. He yelled
up Popper Dovish. I don't even know what that means. Hey,
this guy had to be I mean this is a
while back, all right. This was like I was in
my twenties. This dude was at forties, early fifties. You
know the way he was sending it up to be told,
you're not making any better. I'm not trying to make

(19:07):
it better. And it was.

Speaker 1 (19:08):
It was literally I got the I got the I
got it handed to me by I mean, I'm in
my athletic prime.

Speaker 2 (19:13):
I'm in my mid twenties.

Speaker 1 (19:14):
This guy was in his late forties, early fifties. Braddy
gray T shirt whatever, long white tube socks. Yeah, the
shorty shorts on at the John Stockton shorts song.

Speaker 2 (19:26):
Yeah, bro, stop this, dude. No, this wasn't stop bag.
This was this was the height of like sort top.

Speaker 1 (19:32):
This is you know, this is this is the nineties,
two thousand, this is early two thousands. This guy is
yelling out names I've never heard of before, draining everything
from anywhere.

Speaker 2 (19:44):
Anybody that I mean, just.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
Like just making it rain, yelling out stuff I never
heard of, just and I'm like.

Speaker 2 (19:54):
I don't even know what to do with this.

Speaker 1 (19:55):
Yeah, this guy's beating the brakes up. And he wasn't
I mean, he was taller than me. I mean, you know,
he's like six four. But it wasn't like appreciably, you know,
it wasn't like it all, but it was like six
eight where I couldn't get a get a hand up.

Speaker 3 (20:06):
Wait, see see those the details you didn't throw in
last time you told me this story. He was about
six thirty six four, so now he's six three six four. Yeah,
and then you think about his wingspan.

Speaker 2 (20:17):
But I might mean my arms are long for my
high done.

Speaker 5 (20:20):
Like I'm saying, wait, wait, hold on, hold on, man,
the way you extended your arms like you were six
six wingspan, but I'm like.

Speaker 2 (20:30):
Sixty two this way. So i'd say, it's not like
you know, we'll get a measures tape out. You see,
you good with numbers. The math is not mathing right now.

Speaker 1 (20:37):
I'm five ten vertically and six two with the wingspans
like that's why my arms hang out of my knees.
That's why I always like, have you ever see me
like when I'm walking, my arms are at an angle?

Speaker 2 (20:44):
That's why, because arms hang out real long.

Speaker 3 (20:46):
Okay, So you couldn't get a hand in his face
or I still couldn't.

Speaker 1 (20:49):
I still couldn't stop him about get a hand up
in his face, but I could. I mean, you know,
he was definitely tall, but he was just age.

Speaker 2 (20:54):
It did not matter.

Speaker 1 (20:55):
This dude was crossing me over. I'm just shooting just
only threes. He never took me to the rim. It
was only three point and he was crossing me.

Speaker 2 (21:04):
Over, you know, just just effortless and love and fall
when it fall, I fall down.

Speaker 1 (21:10):
But I said I had my dignity, Steve, my pride
is home, and then.

Speaker 2 (21:17):
Took my sould.

Speaker 3 (21:18):
That day at the point I would have went old
school Dennis Rodman and.

Speaker 2 (21:22):
Just found Oh I did, and it wouldn't work. Man.
He got up there and shot.

Speaker 1 (21:26):
He shot the free throws Rick Perry stout like Grandy.

Speaker 2 (21:28):
Bucket style and was sinking. I'm just sitting there like
I was like, this is woragging to day, this is
literally worse. He set up there shooting free throws underhanded
and then making them, making the spin back and spin backwards.
It hit and I'm like, man, did did did you
walk home? And did you drive? Oh? I put a
I put a hoodie on with a half hoole low
and I drove out of there as quickly as like.

(21:49):
I was like, man, I can't go back here. I
can't come back to the gym.

Speaker 3 (21:51):
I'm sure when Ben walked back or after he left,
they put one of those bolo signs almost looking out for.

Speaker 2 (21:57):
I was on milk. I was on I was on
every cart and milk at that gym.

Speaker 1 (22:03):
Us born five six sixth times here, I got two
great dvs here.

Speaker 2 (22:06):
What do you think the Broncos defensive back situation?

Speaker 1 (22:08):
Obviously with like Kayen Stearns go, he latches on immediately
in Carolina they took him with the first waiver claim.

Speaker 2 (22:13):
There every nights with the geral Verel.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
But you know, you look at you look at camp
this year and some of the bodies that we've got,
me Jelle Skinner looks like he's put together a little
bit of a little bit of a camp. Of course,
you got PJ you got Brandon Jones are brought in.
What do you think of What do you think of
this deal?

Speaker 2 (22:26):
Yeah, key, you're omit him. I gotta quit doing that. Well,
I'll say this.

Speaker 4 (22:32):
If you're saying he's the defense, no, no, I'm saying
that he's in a running, he's in a running.

Speaker 2 (22:39):
He's a smart player. Yeah.

Speaker 4 (22:40):
Well, if he's here, he's making making his play and uh, hey,
that's another position we got to watch. I know it's
not nearly you're not talking about nearly as much as
a quarterback position, but there's.

Speaker 2 (22:50):
Some competition there.

Speaker 3 (22:51):
Yeah, And that's what you want at every position to
have to make those such decisions when coach is sitting
in the room trying to put the team together.

Speaker 2 (22:59):
But that's another guy. Tanner mccallis play too, the Ree
Taylor kid. All those guys are making some place.

Speaker 3 (23:07):
The great thing about rees Reese reminds me of Chris Harris,
and the reason he mind reminds me of Chris Harris
because Chris didn't give two Nichols.

Speaker 2 (23:17):
He had already.

Speaker 3 (23:18):
Heard what everyone said about him negatively, of what he
was unable to accomplish, and he just went into practice
and he just took it to cart And when you
look at Reese, Reese is not one of those guys
you figure, Okay, well he's gonna he can play outside.
I mean his body position in the way that he
anticipates works well for playing inside. So I mean that

(23:39):
that could be a guy who can back up you know, Jaquan.

Speaker 1 (23:42):
Is there any scenario here where you maybe he moved
ja Jaquan outside?

Speaker 2 (23:45):
Are you gonna kikuon slot man play? Absolutely?

Speaker 1 (23:50):
I call him Jaquon making millions because every time he
out there, he's about to make himself.

Speaker 2 (23:53):
Some more mags millions. Yeah, yeah, man, I think that's
a great position.

Speaker 4 (23:58):
I think that's one of the more difficult positions to
play on defense, is that slot cornerback position.

Speaker 2 (24:03):
It's super tough man. You got to know zone, you
got to no man, you gotta be able to blitz.

Speaker 1 (24:07):
There's an art to it, and Chris really I think
helped revolutionize the position.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
You know, there is an.

Speaker 1 (24:13):
Art to It's funny because Chris was a former safety.
You know, I'm used to safety Kansas. He dropped down
the slot here, you know, in the pro game. But
there is an art to it. And we saw guys
like Wes Welker revolutionize the receiver side, and now we're
seeing the CounterPunch with that with cornerside Chris and Jay Kwan,
who has great instincts.

Speaker 3 (24:29):
Yeah, you know, to play in that position in the slot,
you have to be a grown man because you were
simply a linebacker with a smaller body, but you're still
relied on to do those same type of qualities and
bring that same type of physical type of game in
that spot.

Speaker 1 (24:48):
I thought that's why I thought it was so impressive
when Bryce Callahan yeah yeah, he was, I mean he
was my size, said he was five ten a buck
seventy dripping wet.

Speaker 2 (24:57):
He was literally my size out there, and that dude, no,
you got to be fearless because he saw that it's.

Speaker 1 (25:02):
Again friends coming here five teen, five, nine, five ten,
Yeah he was. And then he'said buck seventy two. He
was like, right up my weight. He was like, I've
gotten under up one seventy two now thanks to dieting.
But I'm just saying, you know.

Speaker 3 (25:13):
Wils was great and I was around him in San Francisco.

Speaker 2 (25:17):
He was in there day one.

Speaker 1 (25:18):
Ka.

Speaker 2 (25:19):
I was just gonna say, yeah, Kawan was upsetting man.
That's a one fit dude. Like he just got too hurt.
He was too hurt.

Speaker 1 (25:24):
Wise, it was the thing that Bryce honestly got hurt
too much while he was here. But both those guys
had had a note. Like Price squared up on Derek
Henry one time, remember that game, the first game of
the season or whatever it was. He squared up on
Derek Henry. I was like, oh, oh, my honor.

Speaker 2 (25:36):
Got running for my life.

Speaker 4 (25:37):
Dam I'm telling you, there are guys on the field
who they may look small, but they have hearts like lying,
oh you.

Speaker 1 (25:42):
Got to hit the dog in. Yeah, you might have
three of them, three dogs in him. I'm just saying
that wasraded.

Speaker 3 (25:47):
That's what you need to have when you are seeing
as an undersized guy in this say, someone saying that
you may not be as big, you may not be
as fast. Well, what do you make up having that
blue collar work ethic Arizona Our big is Buddha Baker.

Speaker 1 (26:05):
Yeah, that's another tyred, Matthew, you know exactly call them
honey badger for a reason, you know, fearless.

Speaker 2 (26:12):
Interesting.

Speaker 1 (26:13):
Justin Simmons went down there for for a dinner, and
I think that was a little bit of letters play,
trying to get to Indy to put put foot to
gas there and then we'll see you are justin signs
here shortly.

Speaker 2 (26:22):
But that I still can't believe it's been this Longstu Sason.

Speaker 1 (26:26):
I think part of it was him. I part of
it was, you know, he wanted to spend some time
with his family. He had a real summer to spend
with his family and he kind of enjoyed that. Some
of that was him, some of that was him maybe
overestimating his mark tag on the market.

Speaker 2 (26:37):
Yeah, yeah, marketing for safety's right now? Good?

Speaker 1 (26:40):
Yeah, you've seen now, you've seen what guys a Quander
getting and stuff like that, so you you don't really
need to be coming in there looking for you know,
three years twenty four, Mili, you're not gonna get it.

Speaker 2 (26:49):
So the league is.

Speaker 3 (26:50):
Now doing to the safety position what they did to
the running Here's the thing.

Speaker 2 (26:56):
They did it already the safety position.

Speaker 1 (26:57):
Remember when Eric Reid was a free agent, he couldn't
buy Look, even though he'd just been to the Pro ball.
They did it, and then all of a sudden, this
whole swoop of safeties got paid again when they when
the league started shifting back to cover two, cover four,
and now you're starting to see the league pivot.

Speaker 2 (27:09):
Back to one high and so the safety old side.

Speaker 3 (27:11):
Well, with Eric is it was a little different too,
because he was coming off the whole taking the knee
Colin Kaepernick, that's right situation.

Speaker 2 (27:18):
A lot of people were a little apprehensive about that.

Speaker 3 (27:20):
But we've seen the undermining of the safety position while
we seeing the tie end position now glorified. Right, He's like, well,
you have to have safeties who are able to cover.
And this is why when you look at Tyrn Matthew
on the smallest side, but he had that work ethic
where he was able to climb the ladder. Gus to

(27:41):
what those biggest tight is.

Speaker 1 (27:42):
Welcome back to it Broncos Country tonight, Benjamin Albrighten, Nick Ferguson,
Grant Smith here with you, scouting use the scouting director
now of the Urgenations, promoted.

Speaker 2 (27:49):
You all the way at the top.

Speaker 1 (27:51):
Nick Ferguson, Just Nick Ferguson at the minister Ferguson.

Speaker 2 (27:53):
If you five six six zeros of text line.

Speaker 1 (27:59):
We're going close to the first preseason game Indianapolis Colts.
There's a lot of sort of cautious optimism in Broncos Country.
I think state of the quarterback position and all that is,
Jared Stone is probably gonna be starting this game.

Speaker 2 (28:12):
I think we know that. You would just with that.

Speaker 4 (28:19):
I think almost every person I've talked to it's like
Zach Wilson's not even in it.

Speaker 2 (28:26):
I don't think that's the case. I think Zach Wilson
is still in the mix.

Speaker 4 (28:29):
Man.

Speaker 2 (28:30):
Yeah, I'll tell you, I do what.

Speaker 1 (28:31):
Is he doing in the quarterback room because he's not
doing it on the fielding?

Speaker 2 (28:35):
Well, we'll see, we'll see.

Speaker 1 (28:36):
I mean, and he's got the best tools, he's got
the strongest army. He is the most athletic of the three,
but the dude that he is and the dude that
he could be are farther apart than the other two.

Speaker 2 (28:45):
But see, I told you.

Speaker 3 (28:46):
This before, and I truly believe is what Zach Wilson
should be aiming for is being the backup. Because here's
the biggest misconception about the quarterback position. And we've heard
it before. If you have more than one quarterback, you
don't have none, right, that's what we've been told. But
here's what we've seen, right, and we have to be

(29:06):
honest with ourselves. We've seen starting quarterbacks get injured. Then
when that starting quarterback gets injured, now the team is
scrambling for what our backup replacement. So that backup is
I would say, not as valuable as a starter, but
that person is valuable.

Speaker 2 (29:22):
So Zach still has value.

Speaker 3 (29:26):
He's fighting for the number two spot and I don't
know if the Bronco is gonna keep three quarterbacks to
two quarterbacks. But Zach is in a perfect opportunity. No
one is really expecting anything.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
From him, right, so he goes into this game, he
lights it up. All of a sudden, you get some
you know, hey, I'm a gamer. I may not be
showing it practice, but I put it on in the game.

Speaker 2 (29:43):
But I mean he's had some practice where he's done well.
I mean, yeah, I thought today he did.

Speaker 1 (29:50):
He has some good throw here's some throws to make
you go okay, I see why they drafted a number two.
And then you see some other throws. She said, Oh see,
I see why they why they traded him for six rounder.
You know, it's a mixed bag. It's just inconsistent. If
you could, if you could kind of harness him and
get like finals, find his twelve best throws out there,
be like, hey, dude, I need you to do this
all the time.

Speaker 2 (30:08):
How do we get there? But this is why for Zack,
and this is the way I see it for Zack
to have success in preseason. It's going to be a
team effort.

Speaker 3 (30:19):
Based on what kind of cause they call form. But
more importantly are the receivers running to get open.

Speaker 2 (30:24):
Because at the beginning of the camp something happened where
Zach ran on.

Speaker 3 (30:29):
A seven h seven drill and I'm standing around people
in the media this was doing like OTA's MIDI caamp
and they were like, oh, you got to throw the
ball somewhere in seven o seven. I'm just like, Okay, well, yeah,
you want that to happen. But coaches, yes, don't throw
the ball into the dirt. But are the receivers winning
at that particular point. So the receivers need to go

(30:50):
out there and win, and they need to say, okay, listen,
if we win for Zak, we know he's capable of
getting us a ball. If we want to make the team,
we need to make him look good because now he's
going to showcase us in these preseason games.

Speaker 2 (31:03):
I make him look good. I'm open. He's gonna get
me the ball now, I look good. That's right, huh.

Speaker 3 (31:07):
And if you catch him more balls than the other
guys in your receiver court room, guess what your status
is now elevated.

Speaker 1 (31:16):
Yeah, I'm just like you know, I I get the
impression they're gonna keep all three.

Speaker 2 (31:21):
We'll see. I don't think you. I don't think I
would like for them to do that. I would, I mean,
and I think.

Speaker 1 (31:26):
From a Sean Payton perspective, it adds to what it
is that he's trying to do.

Speaker 2 (31:31):
You know, he's trying to try to shore up that legacy.
He knows he needs to win a.

Speaker 1 (31:34):
Super Bowl with the Denver Broncos or to make the
Hall of Fame, you know, and do something nobody else
has done when Super Bowl two different teams. I think
if you, if you are the guy who builds Zach
Wilson or what everybody thought he could be, all of
a sudden, you've got that quarterback whisper reputation and Andy
Reid's got on top of it. I'm telling you that
vaults you right to the front of the line, you know.
I mean, we look at there's there's coaches out there

(31:54):
right now that want to make the Hall. Got two
super Bowls that you know, You're said now You're sitting
behind George Seffert. You're saying, Hi, Mike Shanahan. You said,
Tom Coughlin, you're Sean Paige. You believe you belong in
that Hall of Fame. A couple of things you got
to do to shore that up, because youve got some
readin your ledger from you know, from some other things.

Speaker 3 (32:08):
He that is able to happen, and he's able Sean
Payton that is to revitalize Zach Wilson, to make him
look decent average, whatever you want to say, then now
you are the quarterback whispering no matter what everyone said,
because everyone threw Zach Wilson away, right, I mean they

(32:29):
hate him in New York.

Speaker 2 (32:31):
I mean it's not his fault. I mean they could
have helped him. But this is the.

Speaker 3 (32:34):
Best situation for Zach Wilson to be in a quarterback competition.
But you're not competing for the starting job. You're not
and there's nothing wrong with that. Who's the player, as
I see.

Speaker 2 (32:47):
Steve's Yeah, guys, who's the player we're gonna be talking about?

Speaker 1 (32:51):
You know, who's player we're gonna be talking about on
Monday that we're not talking about right now.

Speaker 4 (32:54):
Okay, not quarterback or not quarterbacks, just skip the quarter
a Stewigi.

Speaker 1 (32:58):
Who's the player we're gonna be talking about on my
then we're not talking about right now.

Speaker 2 (33:01):
Mike Watson, beg Watson, Big Watson. That's okay. Blake Watson
running back. Yeah, he's been coming back off that. Andrews
look pretty good out there. I know he's got a
third gear too, Yeah he does.

Speaker 3 (33:11):
There's two guys for me, Greg Dosis, because we haven't
seen help any while with Audric estimate.

Speaker 2 (33:19):
I'm really excited about what he said.

Speaker 1 (33:20):
He doesn't have that third gear, but that second gear
is a powerful gear.

Speaker 4 (33:24):
Yes, but idre I think, barring something crazy, he's he's
on the squad.

Speaker 1 (33:29):
Well, yeah, he's that Watson makes the squad because I
think you put him on kick return and then you
give him kind.

Speaker 2 (33:34):
Of the squad. Whoa whoa running backs.

Speaker 3 (33:37):
If you're putting Blake Watson on this roster, what's happening
to Jeelil McLoughlin.

Speaker 2 (33:42):
He's on a rush. You and keep himour running backs? Okay, Atkins,
you keep as an h back.

Speaker 1 (33:45):
You punt on Burton because you keep Akins can play
has been and he's been out there playing that H back.

Speaker 2 (33:49):
You put him as an H back full back, and
you give it nah Burton.

Speaker 3 (33:53):
I don't see it, and I don't see it that
that's a New Orleans Saints son Peyton guy that you're
kicking to the curve.

Speaker 2 (34:00):
I am no three person. I don't think he will.
I am you.

Speaker 1 (34:04):
I mean, I guess you can skimp on receiver, okay,
so I'm trying to think where else you can skimp.

Speaker 2 (34:09):
You're gonna come up. You come up one short on
the old line.

Speaker 1 (34:11):
I mean when we're doing. There's roster math here. If
you're gonna keep four, you gotta come up. You gotta okay,
in my in my, in my career in the league.

Speaker 3 (34:19):
See, they always keep more offensive linemen, even though those
guys will play on Sunday when they even when they
dress right.

Speaker 2 (34:24):
And so that's what I'm saying. That's the one place
you can you skimp, I guess because.

Speaker 3 (34:27):
When but when you do that, they take away from
the skilled players, which is always DB's always.

Speaker 1 (34:32):
Like, if you're doing that, you put the offensive lineman
you used to call use a practice squad, call ups that.
That's how you get around it. You call up, you
call up an extra body or too off practice squad
if you if you need them.

Speaker 3 (34:42):
See the offensive line once again, those guys are gonna
be in place because John Payton has already said that he.

Speaker 2 (34:49):
Wants to be able to run the ball. I mean, Drew.

Speaker 3 (34:52):
Brees had a lot of success in the walls because
they were able to protect him up front.

Speaker 2 (34:56):
So they're gonna keep as many as they need to keep.
Maybe maybe you cut Hall of Fame Titan Lucas Croll.

Speaker 3 (35:02):
Nah, nobody believes that Lucas is great but you're gonna
pull from either the DBS.

Speaker 2 (35:13):
Or the wide received.

Speaker 1 (35:14):
It's the thing because if you're keeping him, and I think,
like Trey Mohon looks like a special team's player. It
don look him as a corner, but he looks like
a special teams player. It looks like he could be
on kick returns. So you got to keep him, and
you are probably you have to. You put him on
the You could probably sneak him to practice fly because
what we're.

Speaker 2 (35:30):
Talking about is what we're talking about. You cannot be.

Speaker 3 (35:32):
A wat trick pony. No no, no, no, no, not the
way that things are now. And remember Russell's contract. What
would the Broncos have this year opposed to what they don't.
So with Raman, you need to prove that you can
be a corner.

Speaker 2 (35:45):
And that's the thing. He's a core special teamer. But
I don't know. If I don't know, we'll see, we'll
see how that checks out.

Speaker 1 (35:49):
So we got our first game coming up this weekend, guys,
you guys looking forward to that. Obviously, you can listen
to it right here on ko A. Broncos Country Tonight
rolls on after this
