Speaker 1 (00:00):
When the show gets this funky. You can only me
one thing, your Colorados to the Denver Broncos Rick Lewis
gotta be lurking somewhere.
Speaker 2 (00:08):
Rick, you out there, No, I always bring you know,
I always bring the funk. Ben Nick little Nick James
busting out some serious funk. Yeah, man, we're busting out.
We're busting out. This is a whole new era for
the Denver Broncos Man, the bow Nicks, Sean Payton era,
and Broncos country should be excited.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I think they are. I think they love their super
free quarterback in in bow Nicks. Speaking of Rick James,
I was not gonna do the Chappelle Show skit there,
but Nick Nick Nick saw it cross my fam The
thought crossed my face for half a second. There ben
a minute since we talked to you, Rick. First of all,
what do you make of bow Nick's preseason I mean,
universal acclaim has sort of followed how well he's done,
(00:50):
and I agree. My one caveat would be that he
hasn't really played against anybody. I mean there's been one.
I think NFL starter Nick Cross was on the field
in that Colts game. The Packers rest of their top
thirty one players.
Speaker 3 (01:03):
I like what bo Nicks is.
Speaker 1 (01:04):
I just wish I would have seen it against maybe,
you know, maybe some guys are actually going to be
playing the league this year.
Speaker 2 (01:09):
Well that's a valid point, Ben, But what we saw
from bo Nicks is pretty much what we saw through
training camp, through the joint practice with the Green Bay Packers,
and then in both of the preseason games. He's been incredible.
That being said, yeah, you know, I think maybe some
(01:29):
people would feel better if he was out there playing
against the ones for at least a quarter or a half.
But I think we've seen enough of bon Nicks. I
don't think we need to see him play in this
third preseason game against the Cardinals. Threes and fours and
fives and future insurance salesmen that are out there on
the field. I'm comfortable with it. Man. I think we've
(01:52):
seen enough. In the fact that Sean Payton has seen
enough to declare him as the starter, I think that's
pretty much all we need to know.
Speaker 3 (02:00):
Rick, both you and Dave Logan were on the call
last Sunday when we saw Bowenig scramble out of the
pocket and find Vonte Williams in the end zone. When
you saw that play developed despite being overturned because he
was a little over the line of scrammage. What was
the first thing that popped into your mind watching him
(02:21):
on that particular play.
Speaker 2 (02:23):
Well, first of all, he's rolling to his left and
scrambling and it looked like he was going to run.
And honestly, I believe I said this during the broadcast
that if he would have run the ball, they would
have easily picked up the first down and maybe he
might have even been able to get into the end zone.
But this guy's amazing his vision on the football field.
(02:47):
He seems to see everything. And you know, in that case,
he did cross the line and they called it back,
and you know what, he kind of knew he did
he when he made that throw, because he said he
looked over to the left and he thought he maybe
crossed the line. But man, it just shows you the
(03:09):
talent that this kid has. And you know, he doesn't
look like a rookie quarterback at all to me. He's
been doing things in training camp and in these games
that you don't typically see a rookie quarterback do. I mean,
he is very matured, obviously played a lot of football
at Oregon, and he came into the NFL ready. I mean,
(03:33):
he is NFL ready, and you can't say that about
too many college quarterbacks. He's had a tremendous preseason and
it's gonna be fun to watch him in Seattle. Talk
about a tough place to play, Nick, I'm sure you
probably played up there once or twice. But man, of
all the stadiums that I've been to, and I've been
to most of them, that is the loudest stadium in
(03:55):
the league right there. And so it'll be interesting to
see if he can keep his cool there in Seattle
with the twelfth man screaming, you know, pretty much the
whole game when we have the ball.
Speaker 1 (04:06):
Yeah, I think Broncos Country is mostly happy. They've got
a glow. They love the fact that bo Nix is
busting out, and they love his fire and desire. They say,
and give it to me, baby, you know it's it's Yeah.
I think that they want him to dance with them,
dance with me, as it were like Rick James. You
and I of course don't need to be chilled out
by any Mary Jane to see this guy on the run.
(04:28):
He's headed for Hollywood, and I think that's as many
as I can squeeze in a one sentence there. I
think it's twelve Rick James songs I can squeeze in
a one sentence there. But it's gonna be a throwdown. Yeah,
there you go. Yeah, it's uh yeah, he is the
super freak, and I think that I think it's good though.
I think the sense of a renewed optimism here in
(04:48):
quarterback play for Broncos Country is good. He's a rookie,
He's gonna have some ups and downs, and certainly opening
the season at the loudest stadium in the NFL against
Michael McDonald, whose defense is starting to become vogue and
sort of you surp think fangios the vogue defense in
the NFL. I think those are I think that's a
tough ask for any rookie right off the bat, but
I would certainly say that that's a heck of a
(05:10):
test before getting your home opener against probably the return
of the most hated quarterback in Broncos Country right now,
Russell Wilson.
Speaker 2 (05:18):
Yeah, you know what, this is my first time in
This will be year eight from me where I truly
feel like they've turned the corner and they're finally building
something with his football team, and you can sense that,
you guys are around the team, you can sense the
energy has shifted. And being at these practices, traveling with
(05:41):
the team to Indianapolis, you can feel it, you know,
when you're around the team, when you're around the staff,
even the staff has got a little bounce in their step.
You know. They seem different this year too. And you
probably noticed, and I'm sure you probably talked about it.
Sean Payton is different this year. Sean Payton seems much
more relaxed. He's sitting back now with a smile on
(06:03):
his face knowing he got his guy and he knows
what he can do with this guy. And that's got
to be a great feeling for him. And so we're
busting out. Man. We got rid of Russell Wilson. We
ate the money, but now we are trending up and
Broncos country be excited. This is going to be a
(06:24):
fun run.
Speaker 3 (06:25):
Would that renewed confidence that you're talking about within the
fan base and he coach Sean Payton, what do you
think that actually translates in a form of wins and
lost totals.
Speaker 2 (06:40):
Well, that's a good question. People have been asking me
that I definitely think five and a half is too low.
The way bo Nix has looked, I feel like they
can win seven to eight at the bottom end, and
in nine and ten if things go really really good.
(07:01):
So for me, the rage is seven to ten ten
being the ceiling. But I do think that this team
has the potential to make a postseason run. I do
feel like the roster is better on paper this year
than it was last year. The only question mark the
wildcard is what are you going to get from the
quarterback position? And it looks like we could get better
(07:23):
play from the quarterback position with this roster. If that happens,
you might be looking at nine or ten.
Speaker 1 (07:31):
That would be certainly a welcome respite for Broncos fans.
I feel like this year is all about setting the
table for bow Knicks. I mean, obviously you want to win,
you want to make the playoffs, you want to get
double digit wins, But this is really about setting the
table for bow Knicks and trying to get him to
where he needs to be so that your super Bowl
window opens next year. I think, hopefully you bring it
in the right free agencies around him and all that
(07:52):
kind of stuff. I think the question here is the defense,
because traditionally the secondary has been the hallmark of the
Denver Broncos, and it looks like this year the front
seven might be the leaders in the clubhouse.
Speaker 2 (08:04):
Yeah, the front seven looks like it has a chance
to be special. And you're right, who's going to be
cornerback number two opposite patzer Ten. It looks like Riley
Moss has earned that job. Damari Mathis, you know a
guy that they drafted in the fourth round a couple
of years ago. You don't typically cut fourth round draft picks,
(08:25):
but I have a feeling he's going to be the
odd man outpack there in that secondary. Chris Abrams drain man,
that dude. That dude's a player. And Nick, you played
the position. You were a defensive back for a long time.
You can see it when you see guys like him
that just figure it out pretty quickly at a very
(08:46):
tough position. This guy looks like he's got a chance
to be special. You combine that with Jay Kwan McMillan
and patser Ten, you might have something. Riley Moss quarterback
might be one of the strongest positions. By the time
we get to mid season or the end of the year.
It's the safety position that I'm just not so sure about.
(09:08):
I like PJ Locke, I'm not sure what you're gonna
do at that other position with Brendon Jones being hurt
pretty much the entire training camp.
Speaker 3 (09:17):
Well, it's interesting that you're bringing up the defensive side
of the ball because you know there's certain issues and
positions that raise and love of concern you bringing up
one with the safety position. The other is the play
of the inside linebackers is going to be Cody Bardon,
Jonas Griffin, how that's gonna kind of shake out. But
(09:38):
the biggest on the defensive side of the ball for me,
because I know playing in the secondary, you need the
guys up front to really make your life easier in
the back end, and for me, that is edge rusher.
You got Baron Browning and John Than Cooper who have
shown up at times over the years that they can
make plays. But what we saw last year when you're
(09:58):
talking about making the playoffs, you saying maybe eight seven, eight,
possibly ten wins and things go, well, you're gonna need
those two booking edge rushers to show up. Well, So
I'll preface the question like this. Baron Browning and Johnny
Cooper are the starting edge rushers for the Broncos. How
long before the Broncos make a change with I had
(10:21):
the guy and put Jonas Ellis.
Speaker 2 (10:25):
In the game. This is a really athletic group of
edge rushers and Baron Browning to me, if he stays healthy,
he can be a special player in this league. And
it's a big if with Baron Brownie because he's had
so many injuries. But you watch him out there in
the field. He is an incredible athlete and he seems
to be starting to figure it out. But Jonah Alis
(10:48):
and Nick Benito also very athletic edge rushers. Jonah Ellis
has been one of the stars of not only training
camp but the preseason and one of the best rookies
in the league so far her going into the season,
that dude looks like he could be special. I would
expect Nick Benito at some point to get more reps
(11:10):
instead of being rotational, maybe more of a primary edge rusher.
He's starting to figure it out. It seems like, you know,
setting that edge in the run game, which is his
biggest weakness. But those two, you know, I really like
all four of them, I really do. I honestly like
all four of them. I think they're in good hands
at that position. And I believe Bess Joseph has said
(11:31):
the same thing.
Speaker 3 (11:31):
Come on, Rag, how long is it gonna take before
Jonah get in the game? How long? How many games
are gonna take?
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Rig?
Speaker 3 (11:38):
Come on, I want your own record.
Speaker 2 (11:40):
Okay, so you you were asking me how long until
Jonah takes over for either Baron Roni or John Cooper
give it to me. I'm gonna say four games?
Speaker 3 (11:51):
Four games? All right.
Speaker 1 (11:52):
We're putting that as the over under on the super
Freak Jonah Aliside rip here our own super Freak Korea.
