Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome to it Broncos Country Tonight, Benjamin Albright, Nick Ferguson,
Live from down here at Broncos Park, powered by Common Spirit,
at the valley where it was a hurricane when I arrived.
It's still pouring down rain like a monsoon out there,
Nick Ferguson.

Speaker 2 (00:14):
Not so much like a monsoon, but it's a little
difficult out there. So if you're driving trying to get home,
whether you're coming from Castle Pines or you're just coming
from Whole Foods on Hampton, make sure you look out
for the other driver and make sure you get home safely.

Speaker 1 (00:30):
That sounds like a very specific shout out to somebody
the Whole Food's on Hampton. Did you did someone try
to side swipe you at that exact location?

Speaker 3 (00:38):
No, no, nothing like that. You in the black Tesla? No, no, no,
no no.

Speaker 2 (00:45):
I just that was the thought that came to my
mind because I'm a little hungry right now. So I
thought about, No, we cannot share your cliff bar, you know. No,
it's half or a quarter of a cliff bar. That's
the only gonna tease me a third. It's only gonna
make me upset. Yeah, right, So I'm trying not to
think about food in front of you exactly. But I

(01:06):
know the roads were are really bad, traffic was really slow,
and I'm just trying to promote safe driving because I
don't know about you, but when I'm driven here in
the rain, it just seems as though, you know, when
you think when there's inclement weather it means slow down. Technically,
not for most drivers, No, it mays speed up. You
didn't get worse, yes, So I just want everybody gets

(01:29):
home safe.

Speaker 1 (01:30):
Five sixty six nine zeros text a lone. You guys
want to get involved in conversation. I like to think
that it rains so hard to wash away the stench
of it being the opening day apparently of pumpkin spice
latte season.

Speaker 3 (01:39):
Ryan Edwards is a celebrator. Wait wait wait yeah, is
that back again?

Speaker 1 (01:43):
Yeah, I know, not make milkshakes in the middle of August.
I don't understand.

Speaker 3 (01:46):
That's kind of really early on the schedule for uh huh.

Speaker 1 (01:50):
The Ryan Edwards was tweeting me this morning, pictures of
him in line. That's certain certain establishments that serve such things.

Speaker 2 (01:59):
Why don't know, I mean, isn't the fact that he
wears flannel isn't that enough.

Speaker 1 (02:03):
I guess he just really really really wanted a nutmeg
and cinnamon milkshake this morning.

Speaker 3 (02:09):
I don't know, why not just take a little nutmeg
from home.

Speaker 1 (02:12):
And just put it in, yeah, saying he could just
put it in some milk and then there you go.

Speaker 3 (02:14):
You don't even have to have all the extra sugar.

Speaker 4 (02:16):
Yeah.

Speaker 3 (02:16):
And if you want extra foam, well, he doesn't even
do the wip cream on it. No, he doesn't. No,
he was right there on the label on his order.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
I saw it and I was like, wow, he sent
you the label on his order, He said me, he
sent me a picture of it and I could see it.

Speaker 4 (02:27):
He like.

Speaker 1 (02:28):
I think he put his thumb over the name he used.
So I don't know if he used a different like
a stage name. Maybe it's like he's his Ron Mexico.

Speaker 3 (02:35):
Oh, you know what I mean. I don't know what
when when.

Speaker 1 (02:38):
Ryan checks in places, obviously he wears a hood and
sunglasses right so that people can't, you know, see his identity.
And I don't know what name he checks in under
when he goes to places like that. I uh, for instance,
went to uh Crumble the other day to get some cookies.

Speaker 3 (02:52):
Right of that place. Yeah, it's great, fantastic.

Speaker 1 (02:54):
And uh, I thought it would be funny to put
Captain Awesome in there on the order when I punched
it in and then I thought it'd be hilarious. I
got there and there was a crowd of people in
this normally empty crumble.

Speaker 3 (03:07):
And this kid comes out in the middle. No no, no, no, no,
looked me dead of the eye.

Speaker 1 (03:13):
He's like, you're the guy, this is you, and he's
like Captain Awesome and just looked at me, and I
was It's like, I forgot I did that.

Speaker 3 (03:20):
I forgot I left it in there. Yeah, people are
now able to see through it now. See you've been.

Speaker 1 (03:25):
The entire the entire establishment was just like, who is that?
You know? D bag so Bnicks officially the start of
the Denver Broncos you and I haven't had a chance
to talk about that. I was a little under the
weather on Monday. Thanks to Eric Delola for filling in
for me. How do you feel about that announcement being
made now versus any other time? And do you want

(03:46):
to see Bonicks against the Arizona Cardinals? So do you
think you put him on ice? In Tel Seattle?

Speaker 2 (03:51):
I started with the ladder first, No, I don't want
to see Bonnicks because right now the battle is for
the number two spot. And I would say this, I
don't feel as though we had an honest look at
Zach Wilson and what he's capable of doing last Sunday.

Speaker 3 (04:11):
In that game he.

Speaker 2 (04:13):
Was in there with the much maligned offensive line and
at the quarterback position. Is really hard to kind of
get comfortable when you don't have I guess confidence in
your offensive line. So right now, at this point, you
for me, I want to see Zach Wilson in his
game and listen, I don't make the decisions here, but
based on how things have worked out this offseason. In preseason,

(04:37):
we've seen in this particular order, first game against the
Colts Stidham and then bow Knicks and then Zach Wilson
pulling up the rear. Second game, we saw bow Knicks
come out and then we saw Stidham and Zach Wilson
pulling up the rear.

Speaker 3 (04:52):
To make this thing a very fair competition.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
You gotta put Zach Wilson in first. You have to,
and I think they're considering that. I did see Old
Lombardy say something about that. Today that they're considering. Yeah,
I think so. And Zach has played a lot better
over the last.

Speaker 3 (05:06):
Two weeks or so.

Speaker 1 (05:07):
I mean he's really played significantly better than he did
in that that opening week of training camp.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
He actually has and he's kind of started to settle
within offense. Get used to certain guys playing offensive line
but more important than the wide receivers. But to reiterate
this again, to make it a fair competition and judgment,
I think you need to start Zach. And because let's

(05:34):
be totally honest, bow Knicks was named the starter. Is
there anyone here in denm Colorado who didn't see that coming?

Speaker 3 (05:42):
I don't think so.

Speaker 1 (05:43):
I mean everybody's you know, I even me, who I
just you know, said hey, Jared, sim's a placeholder until
bow takes the job. Whenever that was And I was
a little bit lower on bow that first week of practice.
I think that everybody else better than that. Even me
was like, this is an inevitability, it's just a question
of when.

Speaker 3 (05:58):
It just was a question and to win.

Speaker 2 (06:00):
I think coach Payton and his staff they were sold
on bow Nicks during the pre draft process, seeing him
up in close and personal, watching him take the list
of plays that coach Payton gave to him, watched him
throw and saw that he was able to digest that information.
And a lot of that you can attribute to the
fact that, hey, listen, I mean, you know, Bowl is

(06:21):
while he might not be old, but he's not a
spring tricken, and he has a lot of experience dating
from his days back at Oregon to Auburn, and to
bring in the quarterback like that, I know we look
at him and say, well, bo is a rookie. Well
he is essentially a rookie, but he's had a lot
of play and experience. And if you can digest offensive playbooks,

(06:42):
but just the playbook of Sean Payton, you know that you're.

Speaker 3 (06:46):
Ready to play.

Speaker 2 (06:49):
I mean, I'm not going to say boys, look, he
is where he needs to be. Even Peyton wasn't his
rookie year, and you're going to see some struggles with him.
But based on what we've seen thus far, what we
saw in the preseason games match similar skill set and
qualities that we saw at Oregon. So I'm glad we

(07:12):
can move past this. We can just focus on this roster.
In Week one in Seattle.

Speaker 1 (07:18):
Broncos fan base pretty excited. Bonick's jerseys seem to already
be be selling, flying off the show, selling like hotcakes. So, guys,
Broncos Country, endeavor be the fifth caller right now three
O three seven one three eighty five eighty five three
O three seven one three eighty five eighty five fifth
caller right now to enter to win a pair of
twenty twenty four Broncos season tickets from KOA and The

(07:40):
Sunday joined the broadcast by texting David rich dur In
the Arizona game, one texter will win Broncos Steelers tickets.
So you got to be listening uh during that to
win as well.

Speaker 3 (07:51):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (07:52):
As we get prepped for this Arizona game, what is
it that you want to see? Is there anything speci
you want to see one last preseason exposure for anyone
on this team to show anything that's jumping attitude you
really need to see out of this game, or for me.

Speaker 2 (08:12):
Knowing as though most of the starters are not going
to play, and a lot of the guys who are
in the bubble or fighting for positions on this team,
they're going to be playing. What I want to see
is the stabilization of the run game. Whatever that looks
like with whoever's carrying the rock, I want the Broncos
to be committed to it. This is the final audition

(08:34):
and it's an opportunity for a lot of these guys
to really show what they can do.

Speaker 3 (08:38):
So some of those backs that did not get a lot.

Speaker 2 (08:41):
Of touches and carries, they're going to get a workload
in this particular game. So why not use this in
preparation for Week one? And what I mean is showing
your dedication to running the ball. And it doesn't make
a difference who's back there. You just want to make
sure that you show teams that no matter who's offensive
line group, who's a quarterback, even though it's bow Knicks

(09:02):
at any point it could be someone else, barring injury
or something like that, that there is a commitment to
running the ball. Because far too many times, Ben, I've
seen in this league, whether it's in the preseason or
the regular season, teams want to say that they committed
to you establishing the run, but then on a couple
of plays they lose yards or they only get one

(09:23):
yard game, and then all of a sudden they're abandoned
it and goes strictly to passing, putting their offensive line
in the crosshairs, but not just him or not that,
just that group, but the quarterback as well.

Speaker 3 (09:35):
To maintain a balance.

Speaker 2 (09:36):
Attack is a quarterback's best friend, but also a play
call is best friend, because now you're hoping the call
plays and execution is there to keep it in third
and short and manageable.

Speaker 1 (09:47):
Yeah, and it's interesting to me because Arizona is one
of the few teams this preseason that has shown anything
exotic on defense at all. So I'm kind of interested
to see what it is that they throw at our
quarterbacks and how the offense handles out, how the offensive
line handles the run game. As you mentioned, something to
keep your eye on. Feels a lot like samaj p
Rice probably the odd man out. You know, over the
last preseason game, he would lower and lower on the

(10:08):
depth chart.

Speaker 3 (10:09):
Maybe they wanted to get a look at Adric Estimate.

Speaker 1 (10:11):
I don't know, but he you know, it kind of
feels like he's slipping on the depth chart and that
he doesn't offer anything that you don't get out of
those other guys.

Speaker 2 (10:17):
Well, I'm not going to say that p Ryan is
slipping on a depth chart. Because a lot of things
that play out as far as playing time comes down
to strategy, and like, we know that quarterback that running
back room, excuse me, was definitely one of those groups
that everyone was eyeing and saying, wow, there's some talent
in there. And somebody even said that, well, Javonte doesn't

(10:39):
look really like himself, and two we saw him out
on the field and it was like, oh, the narrative changed,
Oh he slimmed down, immature exactly. They burned those obituaries,
and sometimes when you have a heavy room like that,
you want to give guys an opportunity to watch them
play to see if they measure up to the evaluations
of the scouts and what you had as a coach.

(11:01):
So I'm not gonna say just because Samaji did not
receive a lot of planning time that means that he
is one of those guys on the outs.

Speaker 3 (11:10):
We really don't know how this is gonna shake out.

Speaker 2 (11:13):
But when you look at Samaji, you say, okay, well,
if you were the factor that in Ben. When you
look at some of those other running backs, something that
they have that Samaji really I'm not saying that he
can't do, but we haven't seen him do in the
past couple of years with the Broncos or the Bengals
play significant amount of special team snaps. That's what we
haven't seen now. It goes down to what the coach's value,

(11:35):
how many running backs you're keeping, how many receivers you're keeping.
But here's what I know, and it's very frustrating for me, Ben,
So I'm gonna tell your usually what happens.

Speaker 3 (11:44):
And cut down on all thirty two teams.

Speaker 2 (11:46):
They keep more offensive linemen, they keep more wide receivers,
which means they keep less guys in the secondary. We
are always the guys in the group that gets screwed
in this particular situation.

Speaker 1 (11:59):
The Broncos a fairly decent job over the years, specifically
under l Way if splitting it pretty evenly, I mean
it was like twenty five and twenty five, and then
the three specialists with a long snapper, kicker, punter, they
did a pretty good job. Sometimes it was twenty six,
twenty four, you know, that kind of thing. But most
of the time it was pretty even. But I have
seen certainly seen teams that have tilted very heavy to
the offense as far as that stuff goes, and that feels.

(12:22):
I mean, I guess you could do that now in
the era of the practice squad, like sixteen people. Yeah,
you got sixteen people and you get like four call
ups for him for a year. So in the air
of the practice squad you can sort of do that.
But back in the day, man, that had to be
frustrating as a player, trying to make a squad knowing
that the numbers were already against you. And oh, by
the way, when they construct the roster, they're going to
stack the deck even further.

Speaker 2 (12:42):
You damn right, you know why because I got cut
four times all some stuff like that. I'm sorry, I know, man.
You did a great job. You did everything that we
wanted you to do. You were not the issue, right
you answered the bill every single time. But we have
to make some raw so changes and we need another
officive line. And I'm like, damn again.

Speaker 1 (13:03):
You start wearing a mask around the facility when you
see the turk, No, pull it down, pull a hood down.

Speaker 3 (13:08):
When you start to see the turk, forget that.

Speaker 2 (13:09):
I'm going the opposite way.

Speaker 3 (13:11):
They can't find me, No, they can't find me. If
they can't find me, they can't cut me. Right, they
could call me all they want to. As long as
I don't answer, I draw my phone.

Speaker 1 (13:20):
I don't know, Hey down a sewer, looking dude down there,
I wouldn't going after it.

Speaker 2 (13:24):
Yes, and knowing that things have to be like the
teams have to be down by certain number by I
think it's about three or four o'clock East Coast time.

Speaker 3 (13:35):
Right.

Speaker 2 (13:35):
All you have to do is get missing it to
then right there you go. They can tell you they
left a message. I didn't get it.

Speaker 3 (13:42):
I got COVID. Yeah, I just didn't get it.

Speaker 1 (13:44):
I'm getting it exactly five six six nine zeros text.
I got a bunch of good questions coming in. I
see you there, Brian. Everybody hates nut big milkshakes. They're awful.
That's multiple texts in there. People wanted to know if
Ryan warf flannel to celebrate today.

Speaker 3 (13:58):
I don't know. Ryan was over at the Eye studio.
They didn't.

Speaker 2 (14:01):
Okay, let's let's let's be transparent here. If I know
you played the numbers, you played Vegas odds. I've been
known with what's over under that Ryan had on a
flammer shirt today point five. Yes, Ryan did wear a flattel. Absolutely,
we all know it.

Speaker 1 (14:17):
Even though we don't know it, uh seOne for us
to know if we should be drafting Javante in fantasy.
I think he's the lead back on this team. Now
it's going to be a platoon. I mean, if you
look at any Sean Payton backfield, they spread the carries out.
I mean, whether it was mark Ingram and Latavious Murray,
Pierre Thomas, Reggie Bush, darren Sprolls, Alamar al Kamar was
the closest thing to a bell cow back that they had,
But they split the reps up in those backfields under

(14:39):
Sean Payton.

Speaker 2 (14:40):
Yeah, if you even go back to when Latavius Murray
was there right right, That's what one of those things
that they did. And it's smart because you're able to
keep the defense off balance. Uh And the one thing
I hope we definitely see this year, and I know
there's so many things with it, with how coach Payton
has done things being you know, more kind to the
media and all of those things. As far as when

(15:03):
a back gets into a rhythm, let's not kind of
send in another back because what it does is allow
the defense to adjust their players and get healthier not
healthier players but fresh players.

Speaker 3 (15:15):
In the game run that back let backs.

Speaker 4 (15:17):
No.

Speaker 2 (15:18):
Look, if you're gonna be our leedback or our complimentary
back when you're in there, if you're picking up positive yards,
hey we're gonna keep you in there.

Speaker 1 (15:25):
I've always felt like a good rotation is to get
my bruisers, you know, my one two punch kind of
kind of rolling early in the first quarter, you know,
and kind of rotate that, let them get in a
groove and rotate them a little bit, and then to
use my speed guys in that second and third quarter.
After that second wins died down just a little bit
and you start, you can go sideline to the sideways,
a sideways, you get them tired out, and then you
go back to the bruiser in the fourth where you're tired,

(15:46):
you don't want to get hit anymore, and you got
other bowling ball of knives coming downhill at you. I've
always felt like that was the optimal rotation. Sean Payton
does it more a little bit more situationally, Yeah.

Speaker 3 (15:54):
He he does.

Speaker 2 (15:55):
It reminds me of when I was watching the Giants
play back in the day and Bill Parcells was a
Giant's head coach. It was a guy by the name
of Dave Meggott. He was great on third down. I
mean he was great. If you flex him out those
f angle Texas route, anything you threw to him, he's

(16:16):
gonna pick up a couple of first web back whatever back, yes, yes, whatever,
whatever type of back. So for me, it's it's I
see Blake Watson in that role, Jaali McLoughlin in that
type of role. But once again, we still don't know
which backs are really going to make this team. I
can say right now with full certainty that there is
one back who's going to make the team, and it's

(16:37):
gonna be Javonte Walliams.

Speaker 3 (16:38):
Yeah.

Speaker 1 (16:38):
And then after that, I mean we assume Jalil's gonna
make it. I mean I think, but and then after
that it really gets murky. So, uh, it'll be interesting
to see how all that stuff shakes out.

Speaker 3 (16:48):
When we come back. We're going to have the color.

Speaker 1 (16:50):
Analysts for the Denver Broncos game day broadcast and our
friend music connoisseur Rick Lewis you listen to Broncos Country,
then I Benjamin all brightck Ferguson right here on kawait'm
ninty four one FM.

Speaker 3 (17:00):
News Talk Sports.

Speaker 1 (17:29):
Well, when the show gets this funky, you can only
me one thing, You Colados to the Denver Broncos Rick
Lewis gotta be lurking somewhere.

Speaker 4 (17:37):
Rick, you out there, No, I always bring you know,
I always bring the funk. Ben n Little Rick James
busting out some serious funk. Yeah, man, we're busting out.
We're busting out. This is a whole new era for
the Denver Broncos Man, the bo Nicks Sean Payton era,
and Broncos country should be excited.

Speaker 1 (17:57):
I think they are. I think they love their super
frequel back in bow Knicks. Speaking of Rick James, I
was not going to do the Chappelle Show skit there,
but Nick saw it cross my fa the thought cross
my face for half a second.

Speaker 3 (18:10):
There been a minute since we talked to you. Rick.
First of all, what do you make of bow Nicks preseason?

Speaker 1 (18:15):
I mean, universal acclaim has sort of followed how well
he's done, and I agree. My one caveat would be
that he hasn't really played against anybody. I mean there's
been one. I think NFL starter Nick Cross was on
the field in that Colts game. The Packers rested their
top thirty one players.

Speaker 3 (18:31):
I like what bo Nicks is.

Speaker 1 (18:33):
I just wish I would have seen it against maybe,
you know, maybe some guys that are actually going to
be playing the league this year.

Speaker 4 (18:38):
Well that's a valid point, Ben, But what we saw
from bow Knicks is pretty much what we saw true
training camp, through the joint practice with the Green Bay Packers,
and then in both of the preseason games. He's been incredible.
That being said, yeah, you know, I think maybe some

(18:58):
people would feel better if he was out there playing
against the ones for at least a quarter or a half.
But I think we've seen enough of Bonnicks. I don't
think we need to see him play in this third
preseason game against the Cardinals. Threes and fours and fives
and future insurance salesmen that are out there on the field.

(19:19):
I'm comfortable with it, man. I think we've seen enough.
In the fact that Sean Payton has seen enough to
declare him as the starter. I think that's pretty much
all we need to know.

Speaker 2 (19:29):
Rick, both you and Dave loganmore on the call last Sunday,
when we saw Boenick scramble out of the pocket and
find Vontae Williams in the end zone. When you saw
that play developed despite being overturned because he was a
little over the line of scrammage, What was the first
thing that popped into your mind watching him on that

(19:50):
particular play.

Speaker 4 (19:52):
Well, first of all, he's rolling to his left and
scrambling and it looked like he was going to run.
And honestly, I believe I said this during the broadcast
that if he would have run the ball, they would
have easily picked up the first down and maybe he
might have even been able to get into the end zone.
But this guy's amazing his vision on the football field.

(20:16):
He seems to see everything. And you know, in that case,
he did cross the line and they called it back,
and you know what, he kind of knew he did.
He knew when he made that throw, like because he
said he looked over to the left and he thought
he maybe crossed the line. But man, it just shows

(20:37):
you the talent that this kid has. And you know,
he doesn't look like a rookie quarterback at all to me.
He's been doing things in training camp and in these
games that you don't typically see a rookie quarterback do.
I mean, he is very matured, obviously played a lot
of football at Oregon, and he came into the NFL ready.

(21:01):
I mean, he is NFL ready, and you can't say
that about too many college quarterbacks. He's had a tremendous
preseason and it's gonna be fun to watch him in Seattle.
Talk about a tough place to play, Nick, I'm sure
you probably played up there once or twice. But man,
of all the stadiums that I've been to, and I've
been to most of them, that is the loudest stadium

(21:23):
in the league right there, And so it'll be interesting
to see if he can keep his cool there in
Seattle with the twelfth man screaming, you know, pretty much
the whole game when we have the ball.

Speaker 1 (21:35):
Yeah, I think Broncos Country is mostly happy. They've got
a glow. They love the fact that bo Nicks is
busting out, and they love his fire and desire.

Speaker 3 (21:43):
They say, and give it to me, baby, you know
it's it's yeah.

Speaker 1 (21:46):
I think that they want him to dance with them,
dance with me, as it were, like Rick James. You
and I of course don't need to be chilled out
by any Mary Jane to see this guy on the run.
He's headed for Hollywood, and I think that's as many
as I can He's in a one sentence there. I
think it's twelve for James songs. I can squeeze in
one sentence there. But it's gonna be a throwtown.

Speaker 4 (22:04):
Like a super freak.

Speaker 3 (22:05):
Yeah there you go.

Speaker 1 (22:08):
Yeah, it's uh yeah, he is the super freak.

Speaker 3 (22:13):
And I think that's I think it's good though.

Speaker 1 (22:14):
I think the sense of a renewed optimism here in
quarterback play for Broncos country's good. He's a rookie, he's
gonna have some ups and downs, and certainly opening the
season at the loudest stadium in the NFL against Michael McDonald,
whose defense is starting to become vogue and sort of
usurped ThEC Fangio is the vogue defense in the NFL.
I think those are I think that's a tough ask
for any rookie right off the bat, but I would

(22:36):
certainly say that, uh, that's that's a heck of a
test before getting your home opener against probably the return
of the most hated quarterback in Broncos country right now,
Russell Wilson.

Speaker 4 (22:47):
Yeah, you know what, this is my first time in
this year eight from me where I truly feel like
they've turned the corner and they're finally building something with
his football team. And you can sense that, you guys
are around the team, you can sense the energy has shifted,
and being at these practices, traveling with the team to Indianapolis,

(23:12):
you can feel it, you know, when you're around the team,
when you're around the staff, even the staff has got
a little bounce in their step. You know, they seem
different this year too. And you probably noticed, and I'm
sure you probably talked about it. Sean Payton is different
this year. Sean Payton seems much more relaxed. He's sitting
back now with a smile on his face knowing he

(23:33):
got his guy and he knows what he can do
with this guy. And that's got to be a great
feeling for him. And so we're busting out man. We
got rid of Russell Wilson. We ate the money, but
now we are trending up and Broncos country be excited.
This is going to be a fun run with.

Speaker 2 (23:54):
That renewed confidence that you're talking about within the fan base.
And hey, coach Sean Payton, what do you think that
actually translate in a form of wins and lost totals.

Speaker 4 (24:09):
Well, that's a good question. People have been asking me that.
I definitely think five and a half is too low.
The way bow Knicks has looked, I feel like they
can win seven to eight at the bottom end, and
in nine to ten if things go really, really good.

(24:29):
So for me, the range is seven to ten, ten
being the ceiling. But I do think that this team
has the potential to make a postseason run. I do
feel like the roster is better on paper this year
than it was last year. The only question mark the
wildcard is what are you going to get from the
quarterback position? And it looks like we could get better

(24:52):
play from the quarterback position with this roster. If that happens,
you might be looking at nine or ten.

Speaker 1 (25:00):
That would be certainly a welcome respite for Broncos fans.
I feel like this year is all about setting the
table for bow Nicks. I mean, obviously you want to win,
you want to make the playoffs, you want to get
double digit wins, But this is really about setting the
table for bow Knicks and trying to get him to
where he needs to be so that your Super Bowl
window opens next year. I think hopefully you bring it
in the right free agencies surround him and all that

(25:21):
kind of stuff. I think the question here is the defense,
because traditionally the secondary has been the hallmark of the
Denver Broncos, and it looks like this year the front
seven might be the leaders in the clubhouse.

Speaker 4 (25:32):
Yeah, the front seven looks like it has a chance
to be special. And you're right, who's going to be
cornerback number two opposite Pats for ten? It looks like
Riley Moss has earned that job Themari Mathis you know
a guy that they drafted in the fourth round a
couple of years ago. You don't typically cut fourth round
draft picks, but I have a feeling he's going to

(25:56):
be the odd man out back there in that secondary.
Chris Abrams drain man, that dude. That dude's a player.
And Nick, you played the position. You were a defensive
back for a long time. You can see it when
you see guys like him that just figure it out
pretty quickly at a very tough position. This guy looks

(26:18):
like he's got a chance to be special. You combine
that with Ja Kwan, McMillan and Patzertan, you might have something.
Riley Moss quarterback might be one of their strongest positions
by the time we get to mid season or the
end of the year. It's the safety position that I'm
just not so sure about. I like PJ Locke, I'm

(26:38):
not sure what you're going to do at that other
position with Brendon, Jones, Bey and Hurt pretty much the
entire training camp.

Speaker 2 (26:45):
Well, it's interesting that you're bringing up the defensive side
of the ball because you know there's certain issues and
positions that raise and love of concern you bringing up
one with the safety position. The other is the play
of the inside linebackers is going to be Cody Barton,
Jonas Griffin, how that's gonna kind of shake out. But

(27:07):
the biggest on the defensive side of the ball for
me because I know playing in the secondary, you need
the guys up front to really make your life easier
in the back end, and for me, that is edge rusher.
You got Baron Browning and Jonathan Cooper who have shown
up at times over the years that they can make plays.
But what we saw last year when you're talking about

(27:27):
making the playoffs and you're saying maybe eight seven, eight,
possibly ten wins and things go, well, you're gonna need
those two booking edge rushers to show up well. So
I'll preface the question like this, Baron Browning and Johnathy
Cooper are the starting edge rushers for the Broncos. How
long before the Broncos make a change with I had

(27:50):
the guy and put Jonas Ellis in the game.

Speaker 4 (27:56):
This is a really athletic group of edge rusher and
Baron Browning. To me, if he stays healthy, he can
be a special player in this league. And it's a
big if with Baron Brownie because he's had so many injuries.
But you watch him out there in the field. He
is an incredible athlete and he seems to be starting
to figure it out. But Jonah Alis and Nick Benito

(28:17):
also very athletic edge rushers. Jonah Ellis has been one
of the stars of not only training camp but the
preseason and one of the best rookies in the league
so far going into the season. That dude looks like
he could be special. I would expect Nick Benito at
some point to get more reps instead of being rotational,

(28:40):
maybe more of a primary edge rusher. He's starting to
figure it out. It seems like, you know, setting that
edge in the run game, which is his biggest weakness.
But those two, you know, I really like all four
of them. I really do. I honestly like all four
of them. I think they're in good hands at that position,
and I believe Vance Joseph has said the same.

Speaker 2 (29:00):
Come on, Rake, how long is it gonna take before
Jonah get in the game?

Speaker 3 (29:04):
How long? How many games are gonna take?

Speaker 4 (29:06):
Rick?

Speaker 3 (29:07):
Come on, I want your own record.

Speaker 4 (29:09):
Okay, so you you were asking me how long until
Jonah takes over for either Baron Ronni or Johnny Cooper?

Speaker 3 (29:16):
Give it to me.

Speaker 4 (29:17):
Rig I'm gonna say four games.

Speaker 3 (29:20):
Four games?

Speaker 1 (29:21):
All right, we're putting that is the over under on
the super Freak Jonah Alis rip here our own super
freak Crea. We appreciate you. We appreciate you as always
dropping by. We got to hit a break for traffic here,
but look forward you guys, call for the game on
Sunday and starting the season at Seattle here in a
couple of weeks.

Speaker 4 (29:37):
All right, love you guys, man, Thanks for having me
on Gold Broncos.

Speaker 1 (29:40):
Absolutely take care. Let's say out to the KWA Common
Spirit Traffick Center. Check in with Dave Oll Brian, what
do you know an Irish R and B singer Nick
hey Man, I'm.

Speaker 2 (29:51):
Telling you when Rake came on and who played Busting Out,
the first thing I thought was super bad?

Speaker 3 (29:59):
Yeah, the movie which came out like twenty years ago.
By the way, though, if you want to feel old, well,
I'll tell you this.

Speaker 2 (30:04):
Like, I don't know about you, but my wife is
the type of person she can only watch a movie once. Yeah,
and she's like, how is it that you know what's
gonna happen, but you continue to sit down in front
of a movie and watch it over and over again.
I'm like, that's the thing that makes that particular movie
that you watch over and over great.

Speaker 3 (30:25):
And I know I'm not the only person that do that.

Speaker 2 (30:27):
I mean, anytime any of the Mission Impossible movies come on,
I watch it.

Speaker 3 (30:33):
Josh, you have to watch it. What's gonna happen to?
You know? Andy's gonna get away?

Speaker 4 (30:38):
Right?

Speaker 3 (30:38):
Yes, but watch it anyway. Yeah, so I watched it.

Speaker 1 (30:42):
Always Fought a good one, and Morgan Freeman impression is terrible,
by the way.

Speaker 2 (30:47):
You know what, that is probably one of your better impressions.
The only one that's that that I like much better
is your Christopher walking.

Speaker 3 (30:58):
Yeah. That was a lot of fun. I guessually, uh,
you know J Moore a really good Christo. Yeah, he
does a really good Christopher Walking, and he came. He
was on the show.

Speaker 1 (31:07):
It's a long time ago, and we did we did
a walking off or we was walking talking to walking,
you know, just trying to try to get the other
guy to crack first by saying the most ridiculous thing.
And I think I got him by pretending to be
Christopher Walking and Bill Clinton in the back of a
limo with a hot tub crank calling somebody.

Speaker 3 (31:23):
I don't remember the whole.

Speaker 2 (31:23):
Biting in the back of that hot funny, but that
was never I loved the party, you know, you know.

Speaker 1 (31:29):
It was yeah, so it was it was Yeah, I
think I got it to crack on that, but it
was Yeah, that was one of my the highlights of
my life getting Jmore to crack doing doing Christopher dueling,
Christopher Walking impersonations. So that was that was a lot
of fun. Five six six nine zerolse you guys stuff
on the text line. We're going to get to get
to some of that here in the next day. Do
you see a J Terrell deal?

Speaker 3 (31:48):
Yeah?

Speaker 2 (31:48):
I think it was four year eighty one million dollars
right roughly the Nick Ferguson deal in the ballpark whatever
next to the ballpark, next to the You know what.
It's funny because when AJ Terrell came out of Clemson,
he was coveted, as you know, one of the top
corners coming out of college. But once he got into

(32:10):
the league, man, he struggling. He did early, really struggled early.

Speaker 3 (32:13):
He struggled a lot.

Speaker 2 (32:15):
But this says a lot about AJ Terrell being able
to develop as as a corner in the commitment to
the Falcons to try to keep their core guys. The
question is, seeing this happen, what is the PS two
deal gonna look like? Where I'm going with it. The
highest paid guy right now is Cleveland's Denzel Ward.

Speaker 3 (32:36):
Who was on his fifth concussion. By the way, Yes
he's the highest paid guy.

Speaker 2 (32:39):
And I think, uh Lattimore for the Saints, I think
he maybe third something like that.

Speaker 3 (32:45):
That was the thing.

Speaker 1 (32:46):
Ryan Edwards was trying to convince me that the Broncos
needed to trade for Latimore, and like with what money?

Speaker 3 (32:50):
You know what? Come on, man, I think Ryan, hopefully
if you're listening.

Speaker 2 (32:54):
If not, someone tweeted at him I think he might
have had too many pumpkin spice lots this morning, too many,
because why the hell would you do that?

Speaker 3 (33:03):
Why would you make that move when you already.

Speaker 2 (33:05):
Have guys on your roster who are already younger, right,
and they are cost effective, and knowing you've got to
pay ps two.

Speaker 1 (33:14):
Yeah, I was like, where you gonna get the money from?

Speaker 4 (33:16):
That?

Speaker 3 (33:16):
One?

Speaker 1 (33:17):
Just doesn't make much sense to me. We'll get a
chance to get back into that. We come back in
the next hour. You listen to Broncos Country tonight right
