Speaker 1 (00:00):
Happy Friday, Broncos Country. It is Broncos Country tonight. I'm
Brandon Cristal though filling in for Benjamin Albright getting a
little extra extension on his holiday weekend with Labor Day
upon us. And one of the coolest things the NFL
does is give teams three days off, basically force them.

Speaker 2 (00:19):
To be closed for three days. So after the.

Speaker 1 (00:22):
Broncos wrapped up practice on Thursday, they actually had to
participate in the kickoff luncheon that the team does every
year and our Pala Dave Logan.

Speaker 2 (00:29):
MC's they bring up a handful of players.

Speaker 1 (00:32):
There's all of the fifty three active players, plus the
practice squad guys or for there's some my R guys.
They sit at tables with sponsors and other invited guests
and it's really cool.

Speaker 2 (00:42):
It raises money for Broncos charities.

Speaker 1 (00:44):
And so after that they get cut loose for three
days because the NFL kind of protects them from themselves
instead of having coaches maybe sneak in a Friday practice
or have you guys report back Sunday. When they change
the cutdown rule and moved it to Tuesday from Thursday,
or rather from Saturday like it had been in most
of the previous years when we had four preseason games.

(01:07):
Because there's now only three preseason games, cut down is
Tuesday at two, and we of course saw the way
the Broncos constructed their initial fifty three.

Speaker 2 (01:16):
The league says, okay, you're done with that.

Speaker 1 (01:18):
Business over Tuesday, well really Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday, because
every preseason game ends by Sunday, like the Broncos did
against the Cardinals the other day, and then you make
those cuts and then you have three days to get
away from the building unless you're playing in the opening
game in this case seemingly Kansas City just about every year,
so you got the Ravens and the Chiefs, or if
you're playing the next day in Sapollo, as we'll see

(01:41):
both the Packers and Eagles playing that game on Friday.
That game is only going to be on Peacock by
the way, you can stream it there. The opening game
is going to be on NBC with the Sunday Night
Football crew, Mike Rico and Chris Collinsworth and everybody else.
You know, we did have a big game yesterday in
Boulder that you heard right here on KOA and the
Buffs come away victorious. Huge nights from shadhar Sanders and

(02:06):
Travis Hunter, but it was maybe a little closer than
some buffs fans won. So we're gonna hear from coach Prime,
We're gonna hear from Schador, We'll hear from Travis Hunter
coming up in just a little bit. But yesterday, you know,
I mentioned practice and then the team getting cut loose,
but the Bronx actually started the day with the groundbreaking.

Speaker 2 (02:22):
On their new one hundred and seventy.

Speaker 1 (02:24):
Five million dollar practice facility, and I had chances, or
a chance rather to sit down and do a exclusive
one on one with both owner Greg Penner that you're
gonna hear in a couple of minutes, as well as
team president Demandi Leach, which you will hear in a
little while as well. But Penner is imminent. And so

(02:44):
it's funny because when the Walton Penner family ownership group
bought the team, and you looked at the financials involved,
and it was the richest purchase acquisition of a pro
sports team in North American history at the time.

Speaker 2 (02:59):
It has now been excd by what.

Speaker 1 (03:01):
Josh Harrison his group did purchasing the Washington Football team.
Now the Washington Commanders, but four point sixty five billion,
and you saw that Rob Walton aka Samuel Robson Walton
Junior is actually the owner if you will, or helped,
you know, put up the bulk of the cash, not

(03:22):
knowing exactly.

Speaker 2 (03:22):
How his money split.

Speaker 1 (03:23):
But he's worth anywhere from fifty nine to seventy billion
as the son of the founder of Walmart.

Speaker 2 (03:29):
And if you read.

Speaker 1 (03:30):
Sam Walton's book, you'll actually see that Rob Walton was
a really big part of the growth of Walmart. He
was at a white collar law firm after Columbia Law
School in New York as that brought him back to Arkansas,
and he was basically the head of the legal team
that helped take Walmart public and become one of the
biggest companies in the world. And he's also a really
good father in law and a really good dad and

(03:53):
a really good grandpa because he helped his daughter and son
in law by the team. And one day they're kids
and they have four of them, but one of their
kids will run it. And that's sort of already I
think being mapped out hasn't instardly been made public. But anyway,
when you saw that they had that much money. You
started saying, Okay, well, when is all the new stuff coming?

(04:15):
And what we've seen from the ownership group to this
point is they'll spend money. They borrowed one hundred million
dollars basically from themselves and put that into the stadium
after year one, which included one of the biggest video
boards in the league, and then they put a bunch
more money in here in year two. But we heard
the announcement about the new practice facility, the new practice

(04:36):
building that's essentially going to go in the parking lot
and be attached to the pat Bowl and field out.
So if you've been over to Broncos Park powered by
Common Spirit, then you kind of understand that layup and
that hill or burm if you will, where fans sit
is going to be leveled and excavated, and that.

Speaker 2 (04:54):
Will be the first floor of the facility.

Speaker 1 (04:56):
There will be underground parking below that, and then at
that first floor players will be able to walk straight
from the locker room on to the field. It is
supposed to take a little shy of two years. They
want to be ready to go at the start of
the twenty twenty sixth season, with training camp in July.

Speaker 2 (05:13):
The fields won't move. At some point they may do
something with the.

Speaker 1 (05:18):
Third turf field, but we'll see exactly how they can
figure that. And then once the new building is ready
to go, they will then scrap the old building that
has been there for thirty plus years and that will
become the new Berm New Hill. It's funny when you
look at the renderings and you check them out at
Denver Broncos dot com and one hundred and seventy five
million bucks is going to be spent, and of course

(05:41):
that's also going to lead to questions about when's the
new stadium, and we know about the questions with the
uniform changing. So I got into all that with Demani
Leci here in a little bit, and you're also gonna
hear my chat with Greg Penner here in just a minute.
But here is Demani first, the team president who took
over in that role I think about a week after
the ownership transition was finalized and approved by the league.

(06:04):
And so this is the money explaining kind of how
and why the building was designed and kind of what
the emphasis was. So this is yesterday as he talked
to media after they did the groundbreaking.

Speaker 3 (06:17):
The biggest thing for us was was the player path
of travel right now? Currently, our facilities treated us well
since nineteen ninety, but you all see it here on
a daily basis. Players are walking across the parking lot
to get to the weight room late in the season.
That's a cold and icy walk. You know, they're walking
across the field to get into the indoor practice facility.

(06:39):
So just managing the number of steps per day. So
we actually tracked that, how many steps from the locker
room is the center point.

Speaker 2 (06:46):
Does it take to you to get to key spaces
in the building.

Speaker 3 (06:49):
How does that compare to the way we have the
facility design, How does that compare to other facilities around
around the NFL. HOK has been great and giving us
a lot of diagrams to help us understand that.

Speaker 1 (06:58):
And the Broncos hit the ground running when they took over,
and as they would go city to city, it felt
like talking to people in the organization, they were either
looking at practice facilities of the teams they were playing,
or checked out things all around the stadium. And I
know they even made a couple of trips that weren't
on their travel itinerary, if you will, for games a

(07:21):
couple of seasons ago, but it was something that.

Speaker 2 (07:24):
They were really in a hurry to do.

Speaker 1 (07:28):
Not that the facility they have and on the upgrades
they've made in recent years haven't been noticed by players.
And when they do that player study the NFLPA has
done the last couple of years.

Speaker 2 (07:37):
The facility isn't criticized at all.

Speaker 1 (07:40):
Even though the locker room's a little smaller, the meeting
rooms are a little smaller. It's just a thirty to
thirty five year old building, and so I think that
that's kind of been the biggest challenge. Sean Payton came
into a ready made facility, if you will, with the
cryo chambers for recovery and big recovery pools and flow tank.

(08:00):
But what people don't realize is when he took over
in New Orleans, they just had no winning culture at all.
And certainly these buildings have changed. And you look at
what you see across big time college football. Look go
online and look at Clemson or Alabama, or Texas or
Ohio State or certainly Oregon and plenty of.

Speaker 2 (08:17):
Other big, big schools, huge programs.

Speaker 1 (08:21):
The University of Kansas is my alma Maters has done
an amazing amount of work to upgrade all their football
facilities in there in the middle of building a brand
new stadium that's going to look more like an NFL
stadium than a college stadium. But you look around the
league and you realize the Broncos they're fine. But then
you see what the Cowboys have with the Star, what

(08:41):
Minnesota has there with the Vikings.

Speaker 2 (08:45):
It's a new facility, the Raiders is.

Speaker 1 (08:46):
Just a couple of years old, and there's a couple
more that I'm forgetting that have opened in recent years.
That every time you talk to people that travel around
the league, they tell you how great they are. And
so it wasn't that the team was demanding this, is
that it was important to Greg Penner and to carry
Walton Penner to get this upgraded. And so I think

(09:08):
that that was the impetus to do this, not because
anybody told them they had to do it or that
they were behind, just that they wanted to make these
changes and upgrade kind of everything. Because as Greg Penner,
quoting his wife, says over and over, including yesterday, they
want to be the number one team to work for,

(09:30):
to play for, and to cheer four. And I maybe
getting that out of order. Maybe it's number one to
cheer four, number one to play for, or number one
to play for, number one to work for, number one
to cheer four. I think that's sort of the order.
But so with that in mind, they made it a
priority to not just upgrade the practice facility, but build
a brand new one. And they're going to bring one

(09:51):
hundred employees or so, maybe a little shy that to
start from the stadium. On the business side, they'll be
on the upper floors. I think the middle floor will
be media, and we're gonna hear from Sean Payton here
in a second as well as that's where some of
the cafeteria areas will be and and I believe maybe
perhaps some of the coaching staff, and then everything on
the first floor is all about football, as you heard

(10:13):
Demane talking about path to the practice field and everything.
So here's Sean Payton Wednesday after practice. He was at
the groundbreaking, but here he is with his thoughts on
the new practice facility.

Speaker 4 (10:24):
Obviously it's gonna beautiful, it's gonna be nice. I think
two years is the I think twenty twenty six. You know,
when we're sitting here doing this, it's going to be
there and this will all be gone. Greg carry the planning.
There's been a lot that has gone into it, and
it's just one more sign of their commitment relative to

(10:48):
this organization and where we're at what they want to do.
I imagine at some point that tower is going to fall.
That probably is the first thing, and then they're going
to start where I understand it, that old hill will
be gone, some of the weight room will open up
to this field. You know, you'll have the training room

(11:09):
with views to this field, the cafeteria, then the second
level connects right to the indoor. You guys will have
a meeting media room over here. I think in the
old racquetball court. Is that where Okay, we haven't finalized that. Yeah,
I didn't move you from here. I didn't do that.

Speaker 1 (11:34):
Sean joking that we were going to be at the
racquetball court all the way on the other side of
the field, have to walk to conduct interviews and do
all the stuff we do pre practice and post practice.
So I mentioned I got to talk to owner CEO
Greg Penner, and I began the conversation just by asking
how exciting it is to break ground on this new building.

Speaker 5 (11:52):
Brandon this is first of all, thank you for having me.
This is a really historic day. We've been in this
facility since March of nineteen ninety and couldn't be more
excited about what we're building here. Carry coined the phrase
of you know, we want to be the best organization
to play for, work for, and cheer for, and this
gets it two of those, which is for our players.

(12:13):
It's going to be fantastic with the space as we're
creating the best place to work for. It's an opportunity
to bring together both our football and business operations and
one facility. So we couldn't be more excited, and.

Speaker 2 (12:24):
As did more than your fair share of homework.

Speaker 1 (12:27):
Pretty much from the time you bought the team hit
the ground running and saw a number of facilities, both
practice facilities as well as a lot of the stadiums
around the league. So how much did those buildings, I
guess inspire what you guys are now going to accomplish here.

Speaker 2 (12:41):
Yeah, we did.

Speaker 5 (12:43):
We visited six or seven training facilities and really it
we took elements from all of those and we also
saw things that that we didn't like. I think it's
it's really important to have the right amount of space,
So I think you can actually build some of these
two big and right now, what's nice about the facility
that we're in is it's it's pretty compact. But that's

(13:04):
also part of the problem with some of our spaces,
like the locker rooms. So really we wanted to learn
from what others had done, see what what we thought
were best practices, and incorporate those here.

Speaker 1 (13:14):
So the next question, of course, and you're always gonna
get it, but when you're building something new, people are
going to ask about the stadium. And I know it's
often not much of an update, but do you welcome
the idea that people are excited about at some point
a new stadium and kind of where do things stand there?

Speaker 2 (13:29):
Yeah?

Speaker 5 (13:29):
I do, and I mean as you as you've seen,
we're going to continue to put resources in the current
stadium because we want that to be a great place
for fans to enjoy games. At the same time, we
continue to explore opportunities both at the current site, new sites,
different designs, and it's a it's a complex, challenging decision,

(13:52):
and we're going to We're going to make the right
one that's right for the next few generations.

Speaker 2 (13:57):
Looking at the team.

Speaker 1 (13:59):
We know that the excitement builds the most when you
have a winning product on the field. So how excited
are you now because you're one, you're just getting your
feet wet last year, it's Shawn's first year and seeing
how that goes and adjusting to the new head coach.
So how is it now that your feet are settled?
You go from being approved at the owners meetings and
meeting everybody that maybe didn't note to now speaking at them.

(14:21):
So kind of just if you can bring that all
into I guess one answer that has three questions.

Speaker 5 (14:26):
Yeah, it I mean, first with the team, I you know,
I was really encouraged. But what I by what I
saw during training camp, Shawn's building the right culture here
and and.

Speaker 2 (14:39):
I love this roster.

Speaker 5 (14:40):
It's it's young, energetic, they're competitive, and I think we're
going to surprise some people this year.

Speaker 6 (14:47):
Yeah.

Speaker 5 (14:47):
In terms of the NFL, it you know, obviously we
have the our focus on the Broncos. That's the primary focus,
but we also want to make the NFL as as
strong as it can be. And and so I'm you know,
enjoying the participation there and helping out on a number
of different areas.

Speaker 1 (15:04):
While he was on a great penner with us just
for another moment or two, and so we talked about
the team. Of course, we understand this is football, NFL football,
but really at every level you need a quarterback. What's
the excitement level for bow Nicks because.

Speaker 2 (15:16):
I know that it's easy. I asked Sean Payton.

Speaker 1 (15:18):
He said, he's you know, it's a year to year,
but you gotta at least sit back and take could
this be our our ten to fifteen year franchise quarterback?

Speaker 2 (15:25):
Is there that level of excitement from where you're sitting,
I mean, sure, that's the that's the dream.

Speaker 5 (15:31):
And you know, I've been really impressed with his poise,
his maturity, leadership, and then obviously seeing you know, some
some strong play in the first couple of preseason games
was was great to see. I had a chance to
call him after coach named him the starting quarterback, had
a good visit with him, and we're excited to see

(15:53):
what he can do this season and our entire roster.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Well, and bow Knicks is selling.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
There's a lot of bon Nix jerseys, I imagine with
the new uniform closet. How have you enjoyed seeing fans
take to that, and then more and more ten jerseys.

Speaker 2 (16:06):
Are showing up with those two jerseys.

Speaker 5 (16:07):
Oh yeah, and jersey new jersey changes are always going
to be a little controversial. We have folks that love
him and folks that aren't so excited. But it's just
been great after a couple of years of working on
the jerseys to actually see him on the field on
the players. I'm looking forward to seeing all the different
combinations of jerseys and the throwbacks, but I think it
brings a freshness.

Speaker 7 (16:29):
You know.

Speaker 5 (16:29):
We wanted to stay true to our history and our
roots of the franchise, bringing some elements to Colorado, but
also make it forward looking.

Speaker 2 (16:37):
Greg.

Speaker 1 (16:37):
It's an exciting day in Broncos Country, an exciting time
and WEKA certainly are proud to be partners with the
Broncos for more than fifty years.

Speaker 2 (16:44):
So thanks so much for the time.

Speaker 5 (16:45):
All right, thank you, Brandon, appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (16:47):
Always good to be able to spend a couple of
minutes talking to the Broncos owner. On the other side,
we will hear from Coach Prime and his son Shoulder,
as well as Travis Hunter. The Buffs had a big
win last night to open their sea in for Benjamin Albright.

Speaker 2 (17:01):
I'm Brandon Christal.

Speaker 1 (17:02):
This is Koa, Colorado eight fifty AM and ninety four
to one FM. This is Broncos Country Tonight. I am
Brandon Kristall in for Benjamin Olbright getting a jump start on.

Speaker 2 (17:16):
His Labor Day weekend.

Speaker 1 (17:17):
And if you're a college football fan, this is the
weekend that you absolutely love. You know, the Buff's got
a jump start on their season, if you will, by
pulling off a win against a really good North Dakota
State program.

Speaker 2 (17:30):
I get that they are Division two or whatever you
want to call it. I guess it's f CS instead
of FBS.

Speaker 1 (17:36):
It's a bunch of bs, honestly to try to differentiation
that Division one, Division two, Division three n AIA. But
whatever it is, we know that North Dakota State has
put up plenty of pros, including guys like Carson Wentz
and Trey Lance and a bunch of others that.

Speaker 2 (17:50):
We could name. But they.

Speaker 1 (17:54):
Have a new head coach, and I think maybe that's
factory in the where they are as a program.

Speaker 2 (17:59):
But there the.

Speaker 1 (18:00):
Previous coaches have gone on to obviously a lot of success.
You look at what Chris Climban is doing now at
Kansas State. Nonetheless, they come to Boulder last night, and
it was an interesting start with North Dakota State marching
down the field and scoring first, but then the Buff's
answer with what ended up being the first of Travis

(18:21):
Hunters three tds, and then some interesting clock management late
by the Buffs. We find out that it was on
shado Or Sanders, and we'll hear from the QB, we'll
hear from the coach, we'll hear from Travis Hunter here
in this segment. But their clock management late certainly left
something to be desired. Nonetheless, they hold on and win

(18:44):
thirty one twenty six. They do not cover the nine
and a half to ten, ten and a half or
even I saw it all the way up to eleven
and a half.

Speaker 2 (18:50):
Before kickoff, but they get that all important win.

Speaker 1 (18:53):
So I mentioned the big night for Travis Hunter as
well as Shadour Sanders, and so I strung together all
three of Travis Hunter's touchdown. So why don't we just
hear the excitement, which we know there's always plenty when
voice of the Buffs going in down, I want to
say you're twenty or twenty one. I heard Mark say
when when he was on the radio of other day

(19:14):
though that that's where he is with this team, and
so I know that they've had some lean years.

Speaker 2 (19:20):
Without question, any buff fan I'll tell you that.

Speaker 1 (19:22):
But this is a heck of a way to start
the twenty twenty four campaign with Coach Prime and his.

Speaker 2 (19:30):
Squad shaders out of the shotgun.

Speaker 7 (19:32):
He's got Charlie to his right, snap looks whips it
on out there, long throw grab.

Speaker 2 (19:36):
Travis Hunter circles.

Speaker 8 (19:38):
Around down the sideline. There he goes the most dynamic player.
Then college foot Pole touches the poll for the first time.
Touchdown touchdown Colorado. Travis Hunter took Tony won yours out.

Speaker 7 (19:53):
Schadure rpl throws us one right side comeback.

Speaker 8 (19:56):
Cleep it grabing so touchdown Lutstown, Colorado. Who is a
mess fan. Travis Hunter makes the crab and the one
hundredth career touchdown. Upsod tours Sanders, Shaka staff take it
by shot, throws at white side, Travis Huddle reaches up
makes their spectacular crab touchdown touchdown Colorado. He's an alien,

(20:20):
he's a freak, he's a mutiat. He's the best player
in college football.

Speaker 7 (20:25):
And the Buffaloes take a ten point lead thirty the
twenty Yeah, no, no question.

Speaker 1 (20:32):
Mark Johnson fired up there and the Buffs come out
and get that win, show that their offense is certainly
more than capable. Shore Sanders goes over one hundred career
passing TDS now but four hundred and fifty five yards.
Huge night for TDS. You heard those three to Travis Hunter.

(20:52):
He had seven catches one hundred and thirty six yards.
He also had forty three snaps of defense's played in
three passes deflected.

Speaker 2 (21:02):
He is the first or the first of all, I
guess the third.

Speaker 1 (21:06):
Player since two thousand my man Charles Gordon played for
a little bit the Vikings but played at my All
Water or.

Speaker 2 (21:11):
The University of Kansas uh.

Speaker 1 (21:13):
And I can't remember who the other other player was
that was on both sides of the ball, but not
only had three passes defense, but also the seven catches.

Speaker 2 (21:25):
And so Travis Hunterer really is one of one.

Speaker 1 (21:27):
We're gonna hear from both he and Shadirra Sanders here
coming up. But also might as well give credit because
it was such a good call to Jimmy Horn Junior,
who liked Travis Hunter had seven catches but went way
bigger on the yard and just Shy had two one
hundred and ninety eight yards and this loan score.

Speaker 7 (21:46):
Takes a step should do or trumps pressure steps up
to the pocket. Rifles just went down. Jimmy's out there thanks
to travel to thirty points.

Speaker 8 (21:53):
They down the sideline, Thomas inside the hoard. Jimmy pas
felt the inso touchdown touchdown Tolrondo seventy yards. Boy think
has shuck twice a two possessions for the Buffalos and
shot huck t Tolroado, Yes, free king the lead.

Speaker 1 (22:13):
Thirteen to ten again mark Johnson's call here on KOA.
So with those two guys and we'll see whe Jimmy
Horn Junior ends up on the draft board. I saw
where Travis Hunter is ranked, at least on one of
the ESPN big boards, is the third best cornerback as
well as third best wide receiver.

Speaker 2 (22:33):
That feels a little low because if you haven't seen yet.

Speaker 1 (22:36):
Go watch the third TD catch where the dB is
draped all over Travis un He.

Speaker 2 (22:41):
Basically reaches around his arms falling to the ground and
makes a hell of the catch.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
Show we'll hear from coach Prime cut up in just
a bit but because Shadora and Travis had such big nights,
why not get a little bit from from them. And
you know, there was the interception from should Or so
that you can't be overlooked. Although it was a ball
low that wasn't gonna be caught by his receiver, but

(23:07):
hit a falling Bison defender on the legs and popped
into the air and was snatched in the back of
the end zone. Should Early it seemed like he was
dealing with cramping or you know, some sort of slight
calf irritation early in the second quarter, but nonetheless.

Speaker 2 (23:24):
He was able to battle through it.

Speaker 1 (23:26):
So here's just a small sampling of the postgame comments
from both Shadur and Travis Hunter, who talked at the
same time. But you'll certainly hear a lot more from
Shadur as he starts by kind of just recapping the win.

Speaker 9 (23:40):
Well, I mean, it was it was cool, but every
incompletion it hurts me inside a little bit, for sure,
besides the ones, you know, we throw aways get out
of trouble. But uh, I'm thankful, I'm excited for a win,
but it's definitely situations in that game I personally could
have handled better his throws. You know, I could have
made just checkdowns. I could have got too. So really

(24:02):
the main go tonight is just recover a little bit
and watch the film and see what we got to improve.

Speaker 10 (24:07):
Just a phenomenal effort by Travis and you on so
many plays and you seem to know exactly where he is.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
He seems to know exactly where the ball is gonna be.

Speaker 9 (24:14):
Well, it's really a connection because he made the decision
to defy the odds to go on a different route
and come to Jackson State at the time, and like
from now on, it's like something that I look back
and now I really respect him a lot for it because,
you know, a player of his cowrad didn't have to
do that, you know, but.

Speaker 7 (24:35):
He did.

Speaker 9 (24:37):
And that's powerful right there. So then years on years
on years of connections, years of talking about different things.
He plays defensive back, so he understands body position, he
understands a lot of things a lot of receivers don't understand.
So that's like the pro of you know, having him
on there when he practiced all week on defense sometimes
or then he gets out there and he handles his

(24:57):
business and it's just we locked in. So that's that's
the overall goal I'm trying to get with all the
receivers really, because everybody know each game somebody's gonna shine,
you know, like I didn't know Jimmy had one hundred
and ninety eight yards today. That was crazy right here
right everybody. Everybody got involved, so that's that's what's good.

(25:18):
Everybody got some touches. But we just got to make sure,
you know, everybody gets the ball.

Speaker 11 (25:24):
Should do were We were hit a few times, but
sack just once.

Speaker 6 (25:27):
How did the pocket feel tonight for you?

Speaker 9 (25:31):
Allowman had an incentive, that's it. They had a great incentive.
So they definitely they definitely did what they were supposed
to do today. So nah, it feels good. I feel
I feel real good coming out the game. But we
still got to recover the right way. Make sure you know,
going into the following weeks. It's it's compound interest. So
it's keep getting hit over and over and over and over.

(25:51):
And that was kind of like my first hit since
like November, felt good, you know, to be live out
there a little bit.

Speaker 12 (25:57):
Tra it's just for you defensively, what was the main
difference and for you guys between the first and the
second half.

Speaker 6 (26:02):
I mean we had to get our oys right in
the right place.

Speaker 10 (26:04):
I mean they came out we already knew what we
had to do, but somehow we was we took them
as a fool. We didn't respect them enough to come
out there and just play how we need to play
in the second half of how we did in the
first half. So we had to come out there and
just put our eyes in the right spot. I mean,
coach chewed us out at halftime. Let us know what
we gotta do. We gotta stop them, we gotta get stops.
Let our offense go to work. And that's what we
came about to do.

Speaker 9 (26:25):
It's complimentary football, so you know, and we need them
to show up. They'll be there when we got to
show up, we'll be there. But everything less than scoring
every drive is it's kind of like a little failure
to us because we take the game so serious, We
take each drive so serious, and you don't know what
play could have been to play, you know, to decide
the game. So that's why it's like we enjoyed the

(26:46):
win overall, but it's definitely a lot of.

Speaker 6 (26:48):
Stuff we left on the table.

Speaker 9 (26:49):
It's quicker things that could have got to the reads
and it's just nothing but room for improvement. But that's
that's a great starting point versus a great team, Like
it's really hard to get the tails on what coverage
and everything they do. So I'm just I'm just happy
that we was able to face them a real challenge.

Speaker 13 (27:04):
What are your goals for this year and how do
you feel about this?

Speaker 10 (27:07):
I got no personal goals. I mean, I just want
my team to come out here and win every week,
and I want us to go out there and just dominate,
do our job. I mean, we got to target on
this man, we got to go out and win. We
gotta make a statement. We gotta everybody know we're here
to stay.

Speaker 2 (27:19):
We're not here.

Speaker 6 (27:19):
We're not here no mediocre teams. I mean, that's why
I didn't want to talk to the media.

Speaker 10 (27:23):
I just want to go to work with my guys
and let them know way I'm here with y'all, like
y'all got to have my back, just like I got
y'all back, and let's go in here and let's win.

Speaker 9 (27:30):
But honestly, it's honestly no personal goals.

Speaker 6 (27:32):
Though.

Speaker 9 (27:32):
That's that's the big You know, a lot of people
say that but honestly, we just want to win games.

Speaker 2 (27:36):
That man.

Speaker 9 (27:37):
That's it, like we just trying to win games whatever.
Everything else is that. But of course we gotta get
a lot of completions though, but personal goals we don't.
We don't really care about that, just wins.

Speaker 12 (27:48):
Tyler King with that sture your your dad was in
here saying that the past of Lejonte was something you
kind of checked into because you wanted to get him
a big play. I mean, what were you seeing on
that play that you just wanted to get.

Speaker 9 (27:59):
Zero cover zero And we have like the best receiver
room in the nation, so it's kind of like disrespectful.
So it was, it was it was something I definitely
would learn from. So that's why I'm happy everything in
my life I always was able to learn from it.
So you it's not too many mistakes you gonna see.
I made twice, you know, So that's just something I'm

(28:20):
gonna learn. Understand that. And even if it looks super
tempting and it's just like still like you just gotta,
you know, just go with it. So it's a lot
of situations like play clock and everything that we're getting
back into the Florida Games but I'm just excited about
the starting point, excited and getting everybody involved, and next
week we'll be locked in and focused.

Speaker 2 (28:39):
That's certainly saying all the right things.

Speaker 1 (28:42):
He doesn't have personal goals, but I saw where his
heisman odds jumped drivers Hunters that has jumped from fifty
to one to twenty five to one. And if he's
gonna play upwards of eighty to one hundred snaps and
go over one hundred yards a bunch and have multiple
touchdown games, I think he's gonna need to get his
hands on some footballs, have some interceptions, maybe some interception returns,

(29:03):
but the sky's limit for Travis Hunter, who's projected to
be a top ten pick, and should or Sanders couldn't have.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
Been the first overall pick. But let's hear from.

Speaker 1 (29:11):
Shador's dad, who certainly had thoughts on the game, including
not loving the fact that they didn't run the ball great,
but he, of course, like dion Kan do, spinds it
a different way. They had twenty three carries fifty nine yards,
so still not really getting it done on the ground,
and six of those carries were by Shador, And I
get there's some RPO stuff in there, but a lot
of them were just him, or of those six, him

(29:33):
running the ball when there wasn't anything downfield for him
to to try to connect with a pass catcher versus
a designed.

Speaker 2 (29:42):
Run, if you will.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
But here is his dad following the games.

Speaker 6 (29:48):
They played a heck of a game. I'm proud of
their staff, their head coach, their history, what they bring
to the table. You can't not discount them. I think
they had knocked off what several powerful five teams in
the last matchups, last several matchups. I'm glad we're able
to come out of there with the W. I'll do
it one pretty to go.

Speaker 11 (30:08):
To Jimmy Seer Foss twenty four seven Sports. Yes, sir,
what did you think about the running situation tonight?

Speaker 6 (30:12):
The running backs? And then is that our running back? Yes, sir,
and our running backs are good. We got to do
a better job of using them a lot more, getting
more yardish. But we got to take what they gave us.
I mean, I don't think nobody's upset with that. Hayden
showed you what he could do, Charlie. As Charlie, we
were getting ready to throw two nine in at the
conclusion of the game, but then they scored because I

(30:34):
wanted you guys to see him, because he was gonna
put that game away running as physical as he does.
But I'm not overly satisfied with with how we ran
ran the ball, especially with the yardist per game. But
we could do much better. They coach Tyler King with,
what's up, boss?

Speaker 2 (30:50):
I'm doing well?

Speaker 6 (30:51):
Thank you.

Speaker 12 (30:51):
Travis obviously had a big night three touchdowns. Was was
there one that stood out to you the most?

Speaker 6 (30:56):
Every last one? Well we called it first one, like
every last one. I mean, Travis is so explosive. We
called it. We said that, you know, you plan some guys,
that is a pretty tough matchup for anybody. But then
when you and you bailing and you let him catch
it and face you, face you up, that's the problem.
And he did what he does. Travis is phenomenal player.

Speaker 13 (31:18):
Coach is frustrated as you're telling us you are. Do
you take solace in the second half? It feels like
you clean up the operation at half time.

Speaker 6 (31:25):
I don't think the operation was dirty, and I just
think we did some things. I know you guys could
wait to get on me if we wouldn't have won
that game. About going forward and fourth down. We didn't
get it. We got we gotta get that. We gotta
convert that. Like that's kind of putting your stamp on, Like, guys,
we gotta be physical. We gotta be physical. Were gonna
have the third or fourth and one. We gotta get that.
I believe in it. That's what I told her. Learn.

(31:45):
I believe in you guys. I believe in you guys.
So I'm not upset that I did that because I
believe in you guys that much.

Speaker 13 (31:52):
That's seventeen play, eighty yr drive you really deliberate. Is
that a good representation of what Shadur and Pat's relationship is.

Speaker 6 (31:59):
They have a for dominal relationship and just the overall
chemistry and the communication of the two even you know,
when he's on the field and hearing Pat say certain
things to him, let me let me tell He's gonna
tell you. But Shador is such a good kid. Sometimes
it cost him because at the end of the game,

(32:19):
we just want to run the ball, let's get out
of here. And he took a shot, you know, to
Leghonte because he wanted Legohntay to have a big play.
Because you got the other two guys, the dogs having
a big play and they and he know he's gonna
have one on one matchup. He just to put it
out there far enough. But that's his character. I'm like, dog,
come on, dog, not right now. You know, it's not
time to be the good guy. Right now, it's time

(32:40):
let's put this game away. But that's that's what that was.
That last drive though, not running the ball like throwing
the passes. Is that something that? I mean, you guys
couldn't really run the ball effectively a lot of time.
I'm not I'm not gonna say that. I mean, you
got to understand. You gotta take what people give you.
You can't take what you want. And it's not there.
I mean, what is it? What do you throw for

(33:00):
four hundred and forty five yards? You think we upset? Right?
Who upset? So Yo? They ever run a game?

Speaker 2 (33:06):
Well?

Speaker 6 (33:07):
The passing game look pretty darn good today. So let's
let's let's be appreciative and thankful that we got one
of the premier guys in college footballs spending it. We're
gonna run the ball, We're gonna do that. We're gonna
have a lot more balanced Today was just that type
of day. You got to take what they give you.

Speaker 11 (33:21):
Obviously, shouldor did his thing tonight? Seek you retacked only
one time. What are your kind of initial thoughts on
the offensive line tonight? Obviously you know a new group,
some guys moving around positions, voting the you know, past
game and run game.

Speaker 6 (33:32):
Well, I'm happy. You know you would love like I said,
you would love to run the ball a little more.
But shoot, would you? You got over five miny yards
of total offense. I thought, I'm pretty good. I go home.
I'm gonna sleep good, really good, really good tonight with that,
so I'm cool with that. We would like to see
a little more balanced. But what is balance. Balance is wins. Really,
that's what ballance is. Nobody says nothing when you win.

Speaker 2 (33:54):
That's true.

Speaker 1 (33:54):
That is the old saying that winning teers all. And
it wasn't necessarily a blowout. They didn't cover like I mentioned,
But the Buffs take care business and they are now
one to zero. They'll go to Nebraska next week and
then they'll have CSU the week after that, the night
before the Broncos home opener in Fort Collins. Tickets for

(34:15):
that are upwards of two hundred two and fifty Bucks.
We know Canvas Stadium just doesn't seat too many. I
think they're right around thirty five thirty six thousand is
their capacity. And then they were making you buy a
full season ticket package, which is something lots of schools
have done. Kansas used to do that so that Nebraska
fans had to buy the whole season in order to
go watch the Huskers play.

Speaker 2 (34:34):
Nonetheless, So huge.

Speaker 1 (34:35):
Night from Shudor Sanders, Travis Hunter as well with the
three touchdowns and the seventy eight snaps and the.

Speaker 2 (34:43):
Big night as well as from Jimmy Horn Junior. So
good to see the Buffs get that win.

Speaker 1 (34:47):
Glad that we had it for you here on Kowa
and we'll continue to have the Buffs like we have
for more than eighty years. So shout out to Mark
Johnson and Gary Barnett and Tyler plumbus A were on
the call, my man Shannon Scott, my man Reied Fisher
behind the scenes at as well.

Speaker 2 (35:00):
All Right, we still have plenty more to go. Don't
go anywhere. I am Brandon christall in for Benjamin Albright.

Speaker 1 (35:06):
This is Koa, Colorado eight fifty AM and ninety four
to one FM.
