Speaker 1 (00:01):
This is Broncos Country on the official home of the Broncos.
All Right, all night KOA And.
Speaker 2 (00:25):
For Benjamin alright for another twenty something minutes, Brandon kristall
with you. I'm gonna had things off to Jack Corgan
and Jerry Shimmel.
Speaker 3 (00:33):
The final road trip of the year for the Rockies
as well.
Speaker 2 (00:35):
It's just three games, but they get to take on
shoe Otani and the Dodgers. Pretty remarkable if you see
what shoe Otani did yesterday in Miami with the ten RBIs,
multiple homers, first guy ever, fifty stolen bases, fifty.
Speaker 3 (00:49):
Home runs, really darn impressive.
Speaker 2 (00:51):
But the Rockies will try to, I guess, mess with
the playoff standings if you will play spoiler.
Speaker 3 (00:57):
The place has been.
Speaker 2 (00:58):
A house of horrors for him in that Chavez Ravine
over the last five, six, seven years, and really kind
of been throughout the history of the franchise, but certainly
of late where they just have a hard time there.
Speaker 3 (01:09):
But we are going to.
Speaker 2 (01:10):
Continue to talk Broncos, and nobody better to do it
with than our pal, Parker Gabriel. We'll head to the
Common Spirit Health hotline. Bring Parker on. You can follow
him on.
Speaker 3 (01:23):
X formerly known as Twitter.
Speaker 2 (01:25):
I say that just because it sounds stupid to call
it X, because it's a dumb name.
Speaker 3 (01:29):
But we call it Twitter.
Speaker 2 (01:30):
We use it a lot in our profession at Parker J. Gabriel,
So Parker, I'm sure you notice I wasn't there today,
and I let everybody know right before we went to
break my car broke down on Interstate twenty five, which
was a blast.
Speaker 3 (01:41):
About hour before.
Speaker 4 (01:43):
You're the Weada availability you backed everything up.
Speaker 2 (01:46):
I no, I definitely didn't. You talk about dumb luck, dude.
And it's been a weird week. I ran out of
gas on Tuesday and happened to be pretty close to
Park Meadows and close to the gas station that seven
eleven kind of on the south side of four seventy
and was able to just kind of get across traffic
and then had my oldest with me and then one
other guy who was trying to get out of the
parking lot help pull the car in get some gas
(02:06):
and was fine, so like the latest five whole minutes
and a couple people honked at us. Then today and
I don't know what's going on, but it's not good.
I'm in the left lane and as I'm hearing a noise,
actually call my mechanic and I'm like, well, this isn't great,
and it starts. The car dies at the ratest speed
I was at as abilit get from the left lane
to the far right side of the highway southbound on
twenty five at Hampton, just past the.
Speaker 3 (02:27):
On ramp and get to safety.
Speaker 2 (02:29):
And so the cars hadn't haven't sped up all the
ways or trying to get onto twenty five and so
just dumb luck. But it certainly caused me to miss
media availability and practice. So I'm gonna ask you what
I missed today.
Speaker 4 (02:42):
Oh well, yeah, not a lot, honestly, pretty quick Friday,
everyone trying to get out of there. The Broncos charter
tonight to Tampa. They're leaving, you know, obviously most of
the time they leave on Saturday for going this far
east and south. They're leaving tonight, so it was hurry
up and get out of there so they could load
(03:03):
the buses and go to the airport. So only material
thing today, nothing too surprising. Baron Browning is out of
Champagne ruled them out with a foot injury, and Jail
Skinner's out with an ankle injury. The only the thing
to watch with Baron is they haven't dead well, they
haven't said the severity of the injury. He was in
an air cast or a walking boot, which isn't uncommon
(03:25):
with any kind of foot or ankle injury. But he
was asked Sean Is asked if injured reserve is a possibility,
and he just said, we'll see. So they've already put
michaem Glinchy on injured reserve. They haven't done that with
Barren yet. Maybe like a mild surprise if they do
at this point, but certainly that's still in the realm
of possibility, at least according to Sean.
Speaker 2 (03:45):
I don't want to spend too much time on Baron Browning,
but it is kind of a bummer because we asked
him what his goals were and he's and this was
during training camp, and he said, well, my first goal
is just to play seventeen games.
Speaker 3 (03:56):
He just hasn't done it in the Bros.
Speaker 2 (03:57):
And that street continues. So you hope that it's not
overly severe. Obviously, if it were, if they knew it was,
say as bad as what you see with McGlinchey or
you know, a Christian McCaffrey, where they're just sending guys
to irs. They know it's going to be at least
four weeks, and so maybe that's encouraging, but it's still
a little disheartening for a guy that when he's dialed in,
you see the talent for Jonathan Cooper's relentlessness and Nick
(04:19):
Benito's quickness and speed, and they added moves. Baron Browning
is the most talented. I think he has the craziest
bend that reminds people of Von Miller.
Speaker 3 (04:28):
You know, Big Al who.
Speaker 2 (04:29):
Obviously does the show right before this one said a
couple of years ago because the top pass rushers getting
eighteen nineteen millions, like he's an eighteen million dollar player.
Speaker 3 (04:36):
Well we know that that's certainly not the case. So
I guess it's not how do they replace them? But
how do they fill that absence?
Speaker 2 (04:44):
I say replaced him because he hasn't you know, been
overly productive yet, not that anyone really has.
Speaker 3 (04:48):
But how do they fill the void while he's out?
Speaker 1 (04:52):
Yeah?
Speaker 4 (04:52):
For sure. I mean I think I think you'll just
you'll see more of Nick Bedido and Joan Ellis. I
mean they were, you know, week one it's a pretty
clear duo, and they rotated outside the linebacker, but it
really is Baron Browning and Johnson Cooper are that's the starters,
and they play, you know, sixty five seventy percent of
the snaps, and then Benito and Jonah Ellis, the rookie
(05:13):
have played sort of the rest and so you know,
you'll see more Benito. I think you'll see more of
Jonah Ellis too, so they'll mostly go three. They'll probably
spot Andre Tillman, who they promoted from the practice squad
earlier this week. He'll he'll maybe get some playing time,
but more likely, I think what you'll see is someone
on special teams and then and then Ellis, who spent
(05:35):
a good special teams player the first two weeks, getting
more more run in the rotation. Those guys were already
playing the third of the snaps, so it's not like
they haven't done anything so far. But I just think
you'll see more, probably you know, closer to a three
man rotation than a four man. And yeah, I mean
the thing was the other thing became with barn just
as quickly is that he's in a contract year, right,
and so that you never want to be hurt. You
(05:57):
never want to miss time. You definitely don't want to
miss time when you're shaping that have a big contract year,
so obviously you hope he gets back sooner rather than later.
Speaker 2 (06:04):
Talking with Parker Gabriel from the Denver Post, and as
we go through the Broncos limited injuries, I spent some
time early on in the show, about a hour ago
talking about the long list of Bucks who are dealing
with injuries, and then three key Bucks who aren't going
to play. When you start with Vidavea, who's listed as
doubtful and we know what a run stuff or he
(06:25):
is in the middle, and then behind the Mantowina Winfield
might be the best safety in football, was the first
team All Pro last year. He's not playing for sure.
Neither's Luke Gettikey, who's dealing with a concussion at right tackle,
and we saw Aiden Hutchinson feast. Now they've only given
up six sacks, but five of them came from Aiden
Hutchinson last week. So when you look at the Bucks
injuries and those key spots, do you think that the
(06:46):
Broncos can not only take advantage of that, but that
that could be something that maybe fools you know, betters
if you will, or folks that think, oh, the Broncos
are gonna go and get curb stomped by the Bucks.
Speaker 4 (06:58):
Maybe, yeah, I mean the Broncos really need to take
a batage, especially at the defensive ones you're talking about, right,
I mean, you know, think about the two things that
they really have have struggled to do so so far
the season. Offensively, you know, it's a it's a myriad
of issues, obviously, but they haven't pushed the ball down
the field a whole lot and haven't been able to
get the run game gone. And when you take two
middle of the field players away, one on the defensive
(07:19):
front in Vitavea one of the back end in Winfield obviously,
like doesn't mean it's gonna be easy, but it's certainly
easier than it would have been if both those guys
were playing. So, you know, the Bucks have given up
a lot of yards so far this year. They just
have been stingy in the red zone. The Broncos offensively
are one of seven in the red zone so far.
So if you're looking for I mean, you know, NFL,
(07:41):
there's not every week you could say you could list
the same things, right, control the clock, third down, red zone,
and away you go. This week the red zone. Really,
I mean, like I said, Tampa has been been but
don't break Todd Bowles will will gamble and play aggressive
and teams can can get chunks of yards against them,
but for the most part, they've kept teams out of
(08:02):
the end zone, even going back to last year. So
if you're looking, you know, those are two really really
good players out in the middle of Tampa's defense, and
that just makes it all the more imperative that the
Broncos figure out a way to you know, put the
ball in the end zone, which last time I checked BK,
that's sort of the point of the game.
Speaker 2 (08:21):
It's the point of the game, and it's something that
has been very challenging. The Broncos offense have only managed
to score when Bonix just uses athleticism. That was not
the called play for him to run the ball in
in Seattle, and so they need to obviously get going
and we know that.
Speaker 3 (08:36):
That starts with the run games.
Speaker 2 (08:38):
So before we look at the Bucks offense, it's a
simple equation, right, but you run the ball, you're going
to control the clock, you're going to move the sticks
and you're going to keep the ball in the field
and give you the best chance to actually put the
ball in the end zone. So DeVante Williams looked really
good in the preseason, just even in practice. You know,
I understand games are what they are, but we hear
them talk about simplifying things and touched on that a
(08:59):
little earlier. And Sean Payton, you know, he talked about
it Sunday and then you asked him about it on Monday,
and then I was asked about it again on Wednesday.
Speaker 3 (09:08):
That's all well and.
Speaker 2 (09:08):
Good to say that, but what will it take? And
do you see a world, especially without Mike McGlinchey, where
they can run the ball more effectively against the Bucks
team that is, you know, missing two really good players
and the best run stuffer.
Speaker 3 (09:19):
But can they stay committed to it and can they
have success?
Speaker 4 (09:23):
Yeah? I think that's the thing is, Like, you know,
it's kind of funny because like you always say, DK,
like you do, do you run the ball to set
up the pass? Now in the NFL do you pass
the ball to set up the run? The thing about
it is in order to teams unless you're Green Bay
playing you know, last week, like you don't just line
up and run the ball fifty five times usually and
win a game that way. So the thing is like
(09:44):
it has to be a blend. You have to run
the ball, and just as importantly, you have to stay
on the field, because if you can't stand the field,
you can't run the ball. But most of the time
the n verse is also true. If you can't run
the ball, you can't stand the field. So it's sort
of a like it's a little bit of a chicken
or the egg. It's a little bit of a paradox.
But they just they have to find a way to
get that the first first down, get some drives initiated.
(10:06):
You know, Sean talks about CFL. That's you know, how
many times you're getting a first down on first or
second down, and that really that's how you that's how
you get it going. And I actually thought like they
didn't get anything out of it, but actually thought the
first couple of drives last week, you know, the first
three or four throws bow Nicks made, he actually he
looked like he was in rhythm. He looked like he
(10:27):
was you know, it wasn't big games. It was still
underneath stuff, but there was just that little bit of like, okay,
you could just start to feel Rhythman at all. You know,
got blown up pretty quickly. But some way, somehow, you've
got to generate first downs, whether it's by running the
ball or throwing the ball, so that you can settle
in and get cracks in the run game and get
(10:50):
rushing attempts and not end up like they did last
week against Pittsburgh, which is twenty plays in the first half.
Speaker 2 (10:57):
And so as we start the line thing down here, Parker,
because as you heard me, Sam, we've got the Rockies
at show, hey, Otani, and to show that Tony get
the sixty and sixty the Rockies could help that potentially
if the.
Speaker 4 (11:08):
Rockies want to win and elevate Milwaukee up and you know,
just sweep LA should be no problem. Milwaukee slips into
the number two spot, gets the buy to the division round.
Speaker 2 (11:17):
That sounds great, okay, And I get it as a
lifelong Brewers fan. You and my Palace Shelby Harris are
are hoping for that. And Rockies I love playing spoiler.
They just don't do well in LA, and especially with
this tear that Otani's on. But as we divert from
baseball back to football. You talk about a resurgence that
if I'm Zach Wilson, I'm excited about seeing, especially not
(11:37):
only what Baker Mayfield's doing, but how Sam Darnold's starting.
Speaker 3 (11:40):
But Baker Mayfield bet on himself last year.
Speaker 2 (11:42):
I thought he should have gone to the Bucks the
year before, honestly and just backed up Tom Brady and
learned from time or been around time.
Speaker 3 (11:47):
I say learned but just been around Tom. But he didn't.
He ends up getting there anyway though, because he was
available a year ago.
Speaker 2 (11:53):
Bets on himself, takes him to the playoffs, wins the
playoff games that sound right, didn't win a playoff game,
but definitely is in the playoffs and gets thirty million
bucks yere. But where they are healthy is in the
future Hall of Famer Mike Evans and a pro bowler
and Chris Godwin. So how do the Broncos slow those
weapons down and slow Baker Mayfield down?
Speaker 3 (12:15):
Who's on this MVP tear in these first couple of games.
Speaker 4 (12:17):
Yeah, it's gonna be really interesting to see what Pastor
Tan does on Sunday because the first two weeks it's
been pretty clear. Like obviously Tyler Lockett and Seattle is
a really good player, but like DKA, very clear number one,
and Pat mostly shadowed him, followed him around. He's done
that more this year, I think Senny really he has
so far in his career. I mean, he basically traveled
(12:39):
with DK metcalf in week one, and he traveled with
George Pickens for the most part in week two. And
so it will be interesting to see if they do
the same thing with Mike Evans on Sunday and they
leave Godwin to Riley moss Or and Jaquan McMillan, if
he's in the you know, line up in the slot,
and so like, I don't I don't know the answer
(13:01):
to that. I'm interested to see. I guess the way
they've played the first two games, it's easy to say
that I think maybe they would do that, but I
don't know that. So that's definitely part of it. And
then the other part is is it gets back what
we're talking with the outside linebackers, like you've got to
make Baker feel it, you know, if they if Baker
Mayfield sits in the pocket for three three and a
(13:22):
half four seconds, if he extends plays and all that,
like that has a bad recipe. So they've got to
continue to get the kind of play they've got so
far from you know, not just Jonathan Cooper, but Zach Allen,
John Franklin Myers, who cleared concussion protocol today. That was
one thing you missed today at practice, BK. So you
know that that's if they generate eat and if advance
(13:45):
Joseph keeps, you know, bringing an extra guy. I mean,
there's second so far. Next Gen Stats has them second
in overall pressure rate through two weeks. And so if
that that's the best way to throw a guy like
Baker Mayfield sort of off kilter because he's been dealing
so far this year, and so if he sits back
there and he's got time, it's gonna be a long
(14:06):
afternoon in Tampa for for Denver Parker.
Speaker 2 (14:09):
I don't think I have for you talking with Parker
Gabriel from the Denver Post. Don't have too much time
because we do have to hit that hard out for
the Rockies game.
Speaker 3 (14:15):
But how do you see it play it out?
Speaker 2 (14:16):
Because I'll let you know I have picked the Bucks
to win, but I'm also zero in two in my pick,
so figure let's go the other way. I picked him
to win a Rod Texas every week to ask us
our score prediction. I just wrote back twenty to seventeen,
but didn't pick a winner, and he's like, who do
you think is gonna win?
Speaker 3 (14:31):
I go, I don't know who do you think's going
to win? So I don't. I'm not gonna mact it
either way.
Speaker 2 (14:37):
I think the Broncos cover, But how do you see
it shaking out here in about thirty seconds?
Speaker 4 (14:41):
Yeah, I think that. I think they'll play. I think
they'll play their best, the best they played so far
this year. I don't see them winning. I think I
had Tampa twenty four to twenty, so sort of similar
game to you. Yeah, I think they'll play better. I
think he'll see signs of life offensively, but it's hard
to go to Florida and win this time of year.
Tampa is good, and at this point, I think we
can say with the Broncos that you know, we want
(15:02):
to see it happen before I want to see him win,
before I start prognosticating wins.
Speaker 3 (15:07):
At this point, yeah, I'm right there with you.
Speaker 2 (15:10):
And the other thing I have to decide, and I
actually says on air, is do I want to wear
shorts to actually cover a game, something I never have contemplated,
but I am based on this forecast, so all right, yeah,
I might be okay with pants. All right, We're all
gonna be sweating, so who cares.
Speaker 3 (15:26):
But I really appreciate it.
Speaker 2 (15:29):
Parker has always make sure everybody checking them out on
the de Never Post, subscribe to the Denver Post, get
it online having delivered for free on Sundays, even if
you don't ask for it like I do.
Speaker 3 (15:36):
But at Parker J. Gabriel on Twitter, Parker, we will
see you in Tampa. Safe travels.
Speaker 4 (15:41):
Yeah, same you.
Speaker 3 (15:43):
There you go.
Speaker 2 (15:43):
That is Parker Gabriel, who has been a really nice
edition covering this team here in the last couple of years.
Came in with USA Today and then jumped over to
the Denver Post gig and has done.
Speaker 3 (15:51):
A great job.
Speaker 2 (15:52):
So appreciate everybody for rocking with me, and for Ben,
who I hope feels a little better he is under
the weather. And in fact, I'm going to be kicking
off the broadcast day seven and nine solo rather nine
to yeah, seven to nine here, so tune in on
Sunday for that. But thanks to Michael Cooveran thank you
for listening. I'm branding Chris Stallins Broncos Country Night on
KOA eight fifty am and ninety four one FM
