Speaker 1 (00:00):
Welcome in to it Broncos Country Tonight post see you
Men's basketball edition Benjamin all right here with you five
six six nine zero is the text line. Guys, come
on out, see myself, Nick Ferguson. We'll be live Mile
Posts zero, Mile Post zero Sunday eleven to one for
the Orange and Blue Brunch. Get to watch a game,
(00:20):
have some drinks, have some food, have a lot of fun.
We've enjoyed doing those so far, so if you guys
haven't been out to one of these so far, we
think this one's gonna be our best one. Yeah, come
on out mile Post zero there at McGregor Square and
have some fun with myself and Nick Ferguson from eleven
to one, courtesy of Don Julio and KOA been an
(00:41):
interesting day so far. Hope you guys think you're too
too snowy out there, A little less snow than perhaps
we originally anticipated, although plenty of it certainly out there.
Hope you all are warm and safe tonight as we
talk a little Broncos right now. Special thanks to Kay
(01:02):
Sports Show for having me and Nicolean earlier today this afternoon.
Getting a chance to do that, and you know we
always love getting to get a chance to get on
there and talk with Ryan and all them. Sean Payton
today that Broncos course didn't make any moves to ad
players at the trade deadline, they did subtract one with
(01:23):
Baron Browning, and if you'd been listening to this show,
you kind of knew that was happening. Sean Payton today
came out and addressed that a little bit, saiding fairness
to Baron Browning, we had a long talk and contract year,
the amount of snaps. He can just get more snaps.
It's the puzzle of trying to look outwards too, and
certainly he's been a part of what we're doing, so
(01:45):
it's never easy to trade someone. And yet I thought,
just in our visit George Peyton and I Baron sitting down,
he totally understood he was looking forward to get more snaps,
and certainly in the year for him, that's important. The
issue for Baron Browning here was two fold, not enough snaps,
enough opportunities to make money in free agency. Baron is
in a contract year. The Arizona Cardinals are going to
(02:07):
offer him that chance, and the Broncos edge rotation currently
just didn't have room for him. He had Nick Bardino
and John Cooper who've been outstanding together the last two seasons.
You know. Cooper of course, just got the sixty million
dollar extension from the team. Rookie Jonah Ellis who they
just drafted in the third round out of Utah, former
third round pick Drew Sanders out of Arkansas. It's gonna
(02:28):
be come back soon. Undrafted rookie Andrea Tillman from the UFL.
So they have too many bodies, not enough playtime. And
for Baron, it just made sense to try to get
something for him and give him an opportunity to get
out there and show what he can do, you know,
showcase what he could do somewhere else, and maybe, you know,
(02:49):
maybe he winds up getting a great contract out of
somebody if he has a good back half of the
back half of the season. I talked to several people
over there in the Valley, and they were not close
to really ever acquiring anyone. You know. There were some
(03:16):
teams that were interested in letting some pass catchers go,
but they wanted a second round pick and the Broncos
were never going to do that. Greg Dulcich was discussed,
but ultimately nobody even made an offer. So that's kind
of where you're at with getting caught up on on
all of that. I just want to make sure you
(03:37):
guys were looped in as far as the trade deadline,
all the trade deadline stuff that was going on. I
thought perhaps the Broncos that Shipp dulcech out for a
seventh rounder, but couldn't even get that. So that's just
where that sits. Five six six nine zero is the
text line Broncos taking on the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday.
(04:00):
As I already mentioned, comes see us out of Mile
Post zero at McGregor Square, Nick and al be there.
He got a chance to win autograph football, that kind
of stuff. Good folks at Don Julio putting it on
and we've loved doing that. Kansas City presents an interesting
challenge for the Broncos, and I think an easier challenge
than Baltimore, even though they may be Super Bowl champs.
(04:20):
I just think that the way that these two teams
stack up against each other, I think it's I think
it's an easier matchup for the Chiefs, even if they
do have better players at some of the positions. I
think Mahomes a better quarterback than Lamar Jackson. I think
Lamar's better athlete, but I think Mahomes a better quarterback.
(04:41):
Travis Kelsey, I think is a better tight end than
than Mark Andrews. And you know, they they've got a
strong run game. I think they've got a better defense.
It's interesting now you think that to say or whatever,
but I think Kansas City's defense is better than the
Baltimore Ravens. And we certainly saw the Ravens defense on
Thursday Night football giving up all those points to Cincinnati,
(05:03):
ultimately coming away with a win, but but still giving
up all those points to Cincinnati. So I I just
I feel like it's a little bit better matchup. Chiefs
do get defensive end Mike Dana and corner Nazi Johnson
back that those guys been out for the last couple
of weeks, but their full participants and should Uh be
(05:24):
able to return, Dana was kind of vital little rotation
there for the Chiefs. So that's that's bad news for
the Broncos. But you know, I just I feel like
this team matches up better. I do. I feel like that.
The one concern that I have is, you know, kind
of Travis Kelcey against our linebackers. I'm not really worried
(05:46):
about DeAndre Hopkins going up against Patzertan. The things I
think you have to worry about here, I mean Hopkins is,
you know, he'll get a few catches and the main
thing is to make sure that they're not getting them
on third down, the possession catches for first down on
third down, and you know Hopkins and and Travis Kelceer
their main two, main two targets on that. The main
(06:07):
thing that I'm worried about his explosive plays with with
guys like Xavier Worthy who have a ton of speed,
and you you want to make sure that a guy
like that doesn't get free and make you pay for it.
And we saw what Zay Flowers was able to do
to the Broncos out of the slot against the Ravens.
I think the Broncos can pay a little less attention
to the run game than you had to with with Baltimore.
(06:32):
Pat Mahomes will will we'll get you for yardage with
his legs, but he doesn't like to do it the
same way that Lamar does. And I don't believe that
Kareem Hunt he is anywhere near the rushing threat that
Derrick Henry is. And that's not to say that that
Hunt is not, you know, an effective rusher the football
(06:54):
or you know, any of that kind of stuff. He's certainly,
you know, been okay this year for for Kansas City,
filling in for Isaiah Pacheco, but not exactly a world beater.
I mean, he's averaging three point seven a carry. He
does have five touchdowns on the season, but not exactly
not exactly a world beatter. Only seven receptions out of
(07:14):
the backfield as well, He's not really a receiving threat,
you know, kind of there anymore similar to I mean
Samajhi p Ryan has double the receptions that he has,
So Samaj's in there, you're you're generally kind of tipping
your hand that you're probably going to they're probably gonna
throw the football rather than run it. And if Kareem
is in there, vice versa Carson Steel, same thing. Steele
(07:36):
gets some token carries, it's some full back usage, but
mostly it's it's carrying the ball. Neither one of those guys,
none of the three particularly effective rushers. B Ryan actually
averages the best at three point nine yards per carry.
Hunt at three to seven, steel three four, So none
of them are particularly adept. They just run the football
in situations where they can and kind of go from there.
(07:57):
I don't know if we'll get a chance to see
Montreal Washington, the former Broncos pick. He's been somebody that
they've they've used a little bit of this season on
special teams, hadn't really used him in anything else. But
the main thing that I'm worried about is, you know,
is Kenazaviel Worthy? You know Worthy? They do let him
run the ball a little bit. You know, once a game,
they usually try to get him on a on a
(08:18):
sweep or you know, a little bump pass kind of thing,
and let him run the ball a little bit. And
he's got some speed and he has scored two rushing
touchdowns this year on nine carries. And then you know
they'll target him four or five times a game on
those deep shots. You know, he's got thirty nine targets
(08:39):
on the season's only caught nineteen of them, but he
does have two hundred and thirty five yard that's good
for twelve point four per reception, which is pretty good,
and three touchdowns. Thirteen of those nineteen have gone for
first down. So that tells you that they're mostly vertical
shots that you know, peppered a few screens in there,
but they're mostly vertical shots that they're taking with him.
As far as as everything else goes, though, it's it's
(09:00):
the Travis Kelcey show. I mean, you know, they they
they tend to feed him. The the other guy that
they feed a little bit, Noah Gray. When they go
two tight end sets and you start to pay too
much attention to Travis Kelsey, they'll they'll slip one into
Noah Grays he gets away from you. But for the
most part, it really has been you know, feeding Travis
(09:21):
Kelce's by far. Uh, they're they're top receiving threat target threat.
I mean, he h more than doubles, uh, the targets
that ra she Rice got, Savior Worthy gets, you know,
gets about two thirds of the targets that Kelsey gets,
but just does not convert at the same level. You know,
Worthy converts at about a forty six percent, whereas Kelsey
(09:42):
converts about sixty six percent, And and that sort of
explains why Kelsey gets the volume targets. Kelsey's targets are
also a lot shorter than then the targets it save
your Worthy gets and the yards that they get out
of that. They're they're attempting mainly to go vertical with
Worthy where they use Kelsea to eat up the field
in the mid game between the numbers, and now that
(10:04):
you've got DeAndre Hopkins in there, it does give you
something else to account for. But I believe this defense
can do that. My one concern is again the deep
play ability when you use Worthy on plays and that
speed and then you know, we've seen this Broncos defense
be susceptible to that wheel. We saw it against Seattle.
We saw Vadal do it for a touchdown with the Chargers.
(10:26):
We saw Justice Hill against the Ravens get Pepper with that.
So the Broncos have got to find a way to
defend that HB wheel because that's that has been a
problem for them this season. Something I'd noticed before banging
the table before it before the last game. As soon
as Hill did it, I was like, see there, there
we go. It's uh, you know, it's something that if
I'm noticing you, you darn sure know that teams around
the league are noticing it and preparing to do what
(10:49):
they can to to try to exploit it from the
Broncos side of the house. I think you've got to
stress Kansas City with the legs of bon Nicks. He's
a four man front coming at you. And I do
believe that if you can run the ball at the ends,
that's that's really how you beat them. You look at
Spags set up and it's been the same since he
was with the New York Giants. You want to run
(11:12):
the football at their defensive ends. If you can get
a combo block, a dual block, and then have somebody
to peel off get to the next level, it will
open up. Uh, it will open things up. And and
that's kind of how you beat them. You know, you
can use bo Nick's uh kind of doing some some
readoption stuff to maybe free a little bit of that up,
hopefully free a little bit of that up early. But uh,
the the main success way to beat Kansas City is
(11:35):
to run at those defensive ends, take them out of
pass rush ability, and then wear them down early. And
and then when you get into passing situations later, they're
they're a little gassed and they're not able to uh
uh to come after you with the you know, with
the full head of steam pin in their ears back.
But we've seen Sean Payton completely ignore my advice before,
(11:55):
so we'll see how badly it gets ignored this time.
And you can, I mean, it's not just me. You
can go out there and look. I mean, there's you
look at the tape. But it's pretty easy to see
how to beat Kansas City. Once they stack, once they
move those linebackers up and start sugar in the gaps,
that's when you put something in behind them, whether it's
a slot receiver on a cross or a tight end
on a crossory. But that's that's the generic vanilla ice
(12:18):
cream way to beat them. Is that. Obviously you're going
to put build your own stuff in there and build
some other things in there that you that you look
at and think you can exploit. But those are the main,
the main ways to beat Kansas City. Run at their
defensive ends, wear them down, and then slip a you know,
slip a tight end or a slot receiver in once
they behind the linebackers, once they start sugar in the
gaps and getting down in there and pressing those gaps
(12:40):
five six six nine zeros A text line. I want
to know what you guys, think about see you going
down to Lubbock take on Texas Tech. It's kind of
funny some of the people who left here were saying
it was actually warmer here, uh, getting down there than
it was down there at fifty degrees that's a byproduct
(13:02):
of the humidity. Which is funny because I mentioned that,
and then I had somebody down there in Texas, well,
Lubbick doesn't have any humidity, and I'm like, well, okay,
this is a common misconception because I came up in
the South and you know, moved out here from Tampa,
and what places down there consider low humidity. For instance,
today in Lubbock, humidity was at sixty six percent. Here
we would consider exorbitantly high humidity the average, and Denver
(13:27):
being about thirty three percent. So it's all relative when
it comes to that. But it was funny watching somebody
from Texas they saying, they're isn't any humidity in Lubbock,
And I'm like, buddy, it's double the humidity of here,
and that's why fifty degrees down there feels colder than
you know, forty degrees here where it's dry. Certainly certainly interesting.
(13:47):
Some of the some of our friends down there for
the game, and I think this is a must win
for CEU. I mean, you've set yourself on this trajectory.
You're gonna have to have some help with teams in BYU,
but you set yourself on a trajectory to you know,
to be able to have a solid close to the season,
and you know it's it's potentially for CEU something that
(14:11):
puts this program back on the map. You have a
solid back half of the season, and you know people
are talking about your name in conjunction with the playoff picture,
even if you don't make it. Talking about your program
in conjunction with that, I think is value you can't
(14:31):
buy because then it creates the perception of successful program.
Just repeatedly hearing that name in contention for those for
the playoff spots and those kinds of things creates the
perception of a successful program. And I think that if
you're CEE, you you desperately need that. You know, you're
a program that's been in disarray or ben irrelevant for
(14:58):
a long time. And so I think that if you
have the opportunity to put yourself back in that picture,
even if you don't make the playoffs, win out it's important,
not necessarily what for what bowl game you go to
or whatever, because that sort of stuff doesn't necessarily really matter,
but it puts you in a spot where your your program,
(15:20):
your school is continually being mentioned on the big letter
networks all the time when they're posting up these first
win in last went out graphics and you know, and
all that kind of stuff. Then it creates the perception
of success, and the perception of a success can lead
to real success. People like I see Colorado up there
all the time, they're one of the contenders. Maybe I'll
flip my commitment and go there. Maybe I'll make my
(15:41):
commitment and go there. And so I think that at
the end of the day, you have to find a
way to continue to win these games. Hope you get
some help for BYU and if you don't, that's fine.
Just continue to inject yourself into the conversation and not
for off the field things. Right, Colorado can't be the circus.
(16:05):
Colorado can't be you know, it's a great destination if
you want to see a little Wayne concert. If you
want to be successful, you have to convince people that
you are successful. You do that two ways, one by
winning and two by being in the hunt, and I
think that they can continue to do that. I hope
they beat Texas Tech down. Aaron LOBBICKU, It's gonna be
(16:26):
a tough game, tougher game than I think people think,
but I think they can. I think they can do it.
And it continues to put them on track to take
some hay here towards the end of the season, certainly
playing better than I thought. In a large poor part
of that is what Rob Livingston has done with that
defense there at CU. You know, the offense is about
what it was, it's the defense. It's really been the difference.
(16:48):
So Broncos Country tonight, rolling on here tonight on a
snowy night here in Denver, we'll be back on KWA.

(17:53):
news if you're a Christian McCaffrey fan. And I think
literally everyone that knows to this listens to this show
knows I drafted at number one overall, sitt him in
our fantasy league. The Niners are expected to activate running
back Christian McCaffrey from injury reserve on Saturday, allowing him
to make his twenty twenty four debut on Sunday. Officially,
McCaffrey's listed as questionable to play against the Bucks on Sunday,
(18:16):
but Kyle Shanahan said we'll take him off IR tomorrow
and then it'll be good to go, unless something crazy
happens on the plane ride. He should be good to
go once he gets off ir Wide receiver Debo Samuel
the reb rib and oblique is listed as questionable, although
he is expected to play as well. Wide receiver Juwan
Jennings has no injury designation and we'll return after missing
the past two games with a hip issue. There is
(18:38):
some concern about the availability of ed rusher Nick Bosa,
who injured his hip in Wednesday's practice. He was limited
all week. Coach Chanan said, I am concerned to a degree.
Wasn't able to do a lot. He definitely was extremely limited.
Hoping he'll be all right, but we'll see on Sunday.
The Niners did rule out Chris Connolly, Genar Grossmaudos, char
(18:59):
Various Ward, who is away from the team after his
one year old daughter, Amne Joy passed away last week,
and defensive tackle Kevin Gibbons is out as well. Some
other news and notes from around the league. The Dolphins,
who desperately need a win, are questioning whether they'll have
(19:19):
Tyreek Hill on Monday night at the Rams. He'll misspractice
on Friday with a wrist injury. The old Mark Kelly
of the Miami Harold Hill did not appear on Thursday's
initial injury report for the week. He'll had been dealing
with a foot injury in recent weeks. He'll say, five
time first team All Pro and a Pro bowler every
year of his career. Has only four hundred and forty
(19:41):
six receiving yards this season, and his reduced production traces
to the broader struggles of the offense, which has created
an inability to get him the ball, partially due to
the concussion that Touy tug By Lois suffered and was
out for several weeks. They can't bet him the ball
if he's injured, though, I guess we'll see if the
rist impact his availability for Monday Night's visit to the Rams.
(20:05):
The Cowboys come to a decision about whether it plays
Dak Prescott on the ir Executive vice president Stephen Jones
said on one to five to three The Fan that
they will put Prescott on the list due to the
hamstring injury he suffered last Sunday. Prescott will miss at
least four games as a result of the injury, but
Jones said he did not have a firm idea of
when or if the quarterback will return this season via
(20:27):
John Machoda of The Athletic. Right now, I don't know.
I don't think anyone knows whether it will be four weeks,
six weeks, or the season. Jones said he'll just have
to continue to monitor that and see where it takes us.
At three and five, the Cowboys certainly are guaranteed having
any meaningful football left to play if Prescott is able
to return this season, and the results they generate with
(20:47):
Cooper Rush running the offense could factor into any decision
to being a Prescott back this year. Over in the AFC,
Tony Pollard and Will Levis are off the injury report
for the Tennessee Titans. Tidan's quarterback Will Lewis will return
to the starting lineup on Sunday. Running Back Toty Pollard
lined up behind him. Neither Levis nor Pollard. Pollard, who
(21:10):
has a foot, and Levis, who has a right shoulder,
has an injury designation. Levis missed the past three games
with a Grade two AC joint sprain, injuring his right
shoulder at a Week four game against the Dolphins. Tried
to play through it. In Week six against the Colts.
After the team's off week, Levis was a full participant
in Thursday and Friday's practices. Coach Brian Callahan said, well
(21:31):
had a really good week of practice. He felt really good.
It's the best he's looked at a couple of weeks,
so we're excited to see him going forward. Pollard popped
up on the injury report in a practice report rather
a week nine miss practice. Ole last week was questionable
for the game against the Patriots, played sixty seven with
seventy seven snaps in the overtime win and had thirty
one touches for hundred fifty four yards. He began this
(21:53):
week with a limited practice before missing Thursday session. Pollard
returned a limited work on Friday. Running Back ty J Spears,
with a hamstring, will return this week after missing last
three games. Corner to Lajerius Snead is out with a
quad issue as well. Brian Robinson is out for Commander Steelers.
(22:15):
Manners won't have their leading rusher once again this weekend,
as running back Brian Robinson and his hamstring had been
ruled out for the Week ten matchup against the Steelers.
While Robinson was a limited participant in practice on Wednesday
and Thursday. He did not participate today. Robinson's sideline last
week Austin Eckler started took eleven carries. Chris Rodriguez also
(22:38):
at eleven carries. Jeremy McNichols took eight. Robinson has talent
four hundred and sixty one yards and six touchdowns this year,
long with nine catches for seventy nine yards. Kicker Austin Seibert,
with a hip issues officially questionable for the contest, did
not practice on Wednesday and was limited Thursday and today.
(22:58):
Commanders added kicker Zaane gonzale As to the practice squad
just in case Cyberg can't play. Newly traded four quarterback
Marshawn Lattimore is out with a hamstring injury. Head coach
Dan Quinn announced earlier offensive line when Andrew Wiley has
a shoulder issue and he is questionable as well. Yannick
(23:20):
and Gotway's tour of the NFL will continue on this
time in New England. On a two and seventeen, the
Patriots claimed him Gotway off waivers after his weave by
the Ravens. Baltimore signed him to the active roster on
October fifteen, after signing him the practice squad back on
September twenty third. Prior to that, he was free to
sign with any team at any time. The Ravens had
released in Gotway before the trade deadline, he would have
(23:42):
been a free agent all over again. After the trade deadline.
All players who are cut, regardless of experience, must go
through waivers and they must go to the team that
claims them if they want to keep playing. Unclear why
the Ravens didn't cut him before the deadline, he would
have been entitled determination pay the Ravens had simply cut
him By waving him, The Patriots assumed responsibility for the
balance of his pro rated contract for the veteran minimum
(24:03):
of one point two one million dollars. Patriots becoming Gockway's
seventh NFL team. The sixteenth fourth round pick played for
the Jags, Vikings, Raiders, Colts, and Bears. Now his two
stints with the Baltimore Ravens. Cowboys should have edge rusher
Michael Parsons back on the field on Sunday after his
(24:25):
ankle issue, and they will have receiver Ceede Lamb. The
team lists Parsons as questionable play, but he said earlier
this week he expects to return. He was limited in
practice all week. Lamb will play after a full practice
on Friday, and he has no injury designation. Right guard
Zach Martin's shoulder is also good to go after a
full practice. Corner Trevon Diggs calf and left tackle Tyler Geiton,
(24:48):
who has a necond shoulder, both questionable. Digs misspractice Friday
after coming down with an illness as well. Geydon had
another limited practice on Friday. Linebackers Eric Kendricks and Nick
Vehill are also questionable, and quarterback Dak Prescott cornered, Deron
Bland and safety Junior Thomas were already ruled out. Prescott
will go on injured reserve tomorrow. The Texans may or
(25:13):
may not have their top two receivers for Sunday night's
matchup with the Lions. Nico Collins returned to practice on
Friday on a limited basis and is questionable. He will
have to be activated to the fifty three man roster
to play. But Tank Dell, who has a back issue,
was added to the injury report today, is a limited
participant in practice and he is questionable for Sunday. Despite
(25:34):
missing the last four games. Colin still leads the Texans
with five hundred and sixty seven yards passing, and he's
tied for the team lead with three touchdowns. Dell caught
thirty passes for three hundred and fifty five yards, while
he ranked third on the team in both categories. One
of the players he's behind, Stefan Diggs, is now out
for the season. Collins, of course, is the other. Elsewhere
(25:54):
on the Texans injury report, defensive end Will Anderson with
an ankle, and running back Damian Pierce are out. Backer
Jake Hanson, defensive end Jarrett Hughes and corner jeff A
Kudar are questionable. Defensive end Derek Barnett and Dylan Horton,
linebacker Aziz Alsher, guard Shack Mason, safety Jimmy Ward, and
offensive lineman Jarrett pattersoner off the report and expected to play.
(26:17):
Good news for the Broncos, the Chiefs will be without
wide receiver Juju smith Schuster again this week. Smith Schuster
was ruled out for Sunday's game against the Broncos with
a hamstring injury. Missed the last two games with the
injury and did not practice at all this week. Defensive
lineman t Sean Wharton is the only other player with
an injury designation. He returned to practice today and is
listed as questionable. Quarterback Pat Mahomes and his ankle, running
(26:42):
back Kareem Hunt is quad wide receiver Mcole Harbman shoulder knee,
Defensive end George car loftis abdomen, corner Nazi Johnson concussion,
and defensive end Mike Danna pectoral are all set to
play as they did not receive injury designations for Sunday.
Trevor Lawrence officially listed as questionable for Sunday's game, not
(27:04):
expected to play. The Jaguars do not expect to have
Trevor Lawrence as their starting quarterback for Sunday's game against
the Vikings. Officially listed as questionable. Doug Peterson said earlier
that the quarterback is trending towards not playing. Lawrence was
limited all week with a left shoulder injury. Mac Jones
will start if Lawrence can't go. Lawrence has missed only
(27:25):
one game since the Jaguars drafted him first overall in
twenty twenty one. Missed a game against the Panthers in
Week seventeen of twenty twenty three with a right shoulder injury.
Jaggs ruled out offensive lineman Ezra Cleveland and defensive tackle
Mason Smith with an ankle. The list wide receiver Gabe Davis,
running back to Ernest Johnson, wide receiver Brian Thomas, junior
(27:46):
safety Daniel Thomas, safety Andrew Winguard, wide receiver Devin DuVernay,
and running back Kellen Robinson as questionable when guard DuVernay
and Robinson, all of whom remained on the injured reserve,
were full participants on Friday. Talked a little bit about
the Texans and Lions match up from the Texans side
of the house. From the Lions side of the house,
(28:08):
They officially will not have their starting left tackle and
their deadline acquisition may or may not be on the
field for Sunday's matchup against the Texans. Taylor Decker in
his shoulder are out for week ten. He was out
of the injury report on Thursday as a limited participant,
