Speaker 1 (00:00):
Bring on Mark Ramondi from esp and the Falcons beat
right out there.
Speaker 2 (00:03):
Mark, how you doing this evening?
Speaker 3 (00:05):
Good gentment.
Speaker 4 (00:06):
I'm going to get through that my entrance music, so
I I appreciate it very much.
Speaker 2 (00:10):
Okay, well, well you know we'll put it on file.
Speaker 1 (00:12):
We'll make sure you're se music way better than Nick
Shanaia Twain request. That's we're still me. Hey, look you
have you have Shanaia and Tatae on there. See if
that's what works for you, this horse for you. I
need to have a little more.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
High uh Marc.
Speaker 1 (00:24):
As we look at this thing that the Broncos coming
off a tough schedule, they always view these three.
Speaker 2 (00:28):
Games as the meat of this schedule.
Speaker 1 (00:30):
You were all the round Baltimore loss, you're all over
Kansas City devastating loss on blockfield goal, and now you
get the Falcons at home. They felt like they had
to pick up one of the three. I think that
here they feel pretty optimistic about that, especially looking at
the injury report there at Atlanta and that that defense
it's been unable to.
Speaker 2 (00:44):
Pressure the quarterback. What say you, sir?
Speaker 4 (00:48):
It is uh it is definitely the most banged up
version of this Falcons team all season, especially in the
secondary guys. They are missing their number two cornerback, Mike Cues,
their nickel cornerback in the Alford, and it is you know,
this is this is the secondary that has you know
some some teams have put up big plays on them
this season, including last week against the Saints. You know,
(01:11):
Mark hez Valdez Standling not not a guy known for
big plays lately. Uh, you know, put up some some
big numbers in the first half against the Falcons. And
they're gonna be without some of their top players and
then you can go down the list. I mean, they're
They're missing James Smith. Williams has gotten a lot of
reps at the edge. They're gonna miss Charlie Warner, who
is their best blocking tight end and a huge part
(01:32):
of their running game with Jehan Robinson.
Speaker 2 (01:34):
Uh, it is.
Speaker 4 (01:35):
It is a very banged up team going to Denver,
and uh, I think the Falcons are very luckily the
bye week is right after Denver.
Speaker 5 (01:43):
One of the biggest issues watching the Falcons is not
just the secondary, because being a former guy on the
plane secondary myself, I know the secondary and the pass
rush are married together. But Matt Judah was one of
those guys that the Falcons brought in thought they were
going to create more pass rush, but they haven't. So
coming against Denver on Sunday, how the Falcons are going
(02:04):
to do that? As far as pass rushes concern are,
you know, they're going to try to add extra guys
on the second level with blitz guys, But how can
you manufacture pass rush if you had the Falcons.
Speaker 4 (02:16):
That's the thing that they've been trying to figure out
the entire season so far.
Speaker 2 (02:20):
Guys. I mean, it has been it has been tough.
Speaker 4 (02:21):
It has been a struggle. And their best pass rusher
might be Cayden Ellis, who's an off the ball linebacker
and you know, he has the most pressures of the season,
so it's not even an edge or defensive lineman. It's
a guy who kind of plays in the middle with
the green dot. So it's been it's been tough. And
they are getting Lorenzo carter back and he's been out.
He's one of their you know, edge rushers. He's been
(02:42):
out since earlier in the season with a concussion, so
they are getting him back, which is good news. But
I mean, this is a team that you know, there
they brought up D'Angelo Malone, who was a special teams
guy for most of the season, and he's getting some
reps right now at the edge. And they elevated a
guy from the Piper squad Khalid Kareem last week, who
played actually pretty decent from the edge last week. But
they are trying pretty much everything right now because it's
(03:05):
it's not working. Nine sacks, I mean, is the worst
hoos in the league, the worst quarterback pressure rate in
the league.
Speaker 2 (03:11):
It is not, it has been.
Speaker 4 (03:13):
It has been kind of a mess right for that
Falgas in that respect.
Speaker 1 (03:17):
On the other side of the ball, Falcons loaded offensively,
kind of the antithesis of Denver. I guess was that
the defensive identity team that's growing an offense. The Falcons
had the offense trying to grow a defense there as
we look at all the weapons, I mean, and and
Mooney has that Achilles thing. I don't know what that
how that's gonna limited or whatever. But you got London,
You've got Mooney, you got Pits, you got Bijon, and
you got out here. There's just there's just a dirf
(03:39):
of just an absolute.
Speaker 2 (03:42):
Load of weapons there for the Falcons. Why have they
not scored more? It seems like.
Speaker 4 (03:48):
It's a good question. I mean, they are at the
third most yards of total offense in the entire NFL
coming into this week, right, and but they're only scoring
at the fourteenth best rate, which is something that they
have to address. You know, from the offensive.
Speaker 3 (04:03):
Side, they move the ball, you know, John.
Speaker 4 (04:06):
Robinson has been an incredible all purpose back. Mooney and
London are arguably right now statistically the best receiver duo
in the entire NFL. They're moving the ball, but they're
not scoring the points that they need, and that's something
that really needs to be addressed with offensive coordinator Zach Robinson.
And they just haven't been an efficient and then they've
had penalties kill them and their first halfs. I mean,
(04:26):
they have really had a hard time in the first half.
They've been a very good second half team. They've had
some really nice comebacks this season against the Eagles and
the Saints and the Bucks. But in the first half,
it seems like they come out a lot almost every week,
which is disturbing. I mean, it's like the time of
possession every week against the Falcons is like sole lopside
when you go into the second quarter. It's almost bizarre.
Speaker 5 (04:46):
Mark when we look at the Falcons offensively, it's just
not just Kirk Cousins and b John Robinson and Algier,
but young Wayku seventy four points he scored this season.
But as of late, he's someone in the slump. I mean,
how does he get out of the slump? Can he
get out of the slump? And do you think he's
(05:07):
looking at the game's sun against the Broncos with the
thin air here, hoping that that would kind of get him.
Speaker 2 (05:12):
Back on track.
Speaker 4 (05:14):
You know, I really feel like the Falcons been loved
for a situation very early in the game, something close,
you know, a twenty nine yard or you know, low
pressure situation. I think they would love to have that
young waikoup because he did. He missed three field goals
against the Saints, and he has struggled from really beyond
forty yards this season and it's been a little bit
of a concern. But before the season, we're talking about
(05:36):
a guy who's been one of the most active kickers
in the history of the NFL. So it's one of
those things where he's in a little bit of a slump,
like you said, and the only thing that Falcons can
really do at this rate is is hope that he
breaks out of it. I think it's probably something that's
more mental than it's physical. Like he's you know, he's
hitting the ball well, it isn't distancing, it's just he's
kind of you know, he's a little bit off to
the left of the right, and it's like, guess, one
of those things that happens in the careers of a kicker,
(05:58):
and the best kickers a way to figure out how
to get out of those slumps. And that's kind of
what is incumbent upon coup right now.
Speaker 1 (06:05):
Talking with Mark Ramondi, the ESPM beat writer the Atlanta Falcons. Mark, obviously,
the Falcons added Justin Simmons this off season. Simmons, but
that beloved fan favorite here in Denver. How has it
gone for Simmons thus far there in Atlanta and how
emotional will this return be for him?
Speaker 4 (06:22):
Very emotional?
Speaker 3 (06:23):
And Justin Simmons is one of the best guys in.
Speaker 4 (06:25):
The locker room, you know, really really a team player,
all around good guy. Also incredibly well dressed. Justin Simmons,
and let me just say that very true.
Speaker 2 (06:32):
He's very true.
Speaker 4 (06:33):
He's dripping as the kids say. I think they still
say that. I'm not sure.
Speaker 3 (06:37):
I'm forty, but but you know.
Speaker 4 (06:40):
He's he's looking, he's looking forward to, you know, coming back.
He's been a really big part of the defense. Like
you know, we were just talking about the pass rush.
Speaker 2 (06:46):
Guys.
Speaker 4 (06:47):
The secondary has really held up its ends of the
market for the most part this season for the Falcons,
not so much last week against the Saints, but man,
if they don't have guys like Jesse Bass and Justin
Simmons and aj Trawl in that secondary, with the lack
of the pass that they have, like the startling lack
of pass rush, I'm not sure what the posits will
be right now. And then Simmons is right there, you know,
as the guy very helpful in the secondary.
Speaker 5 (07:07):
You know, it's something very interesting about the relationship with
Justin Simmons. And everyone's asking a question around here as
far as well, what's the type of welcome well Justin
received when he comes into empower field? But when you
watch him and you watch Bass and all those guys
in the secondary, what is giving you hope that maybe
(07:30):
they can come in and they can create some turnovers
here and get some takeaways from the Broncos.
Speaker 4 (07:36):
That's what I have to hope for. And that's kind
of what like when when the Foalsmans have played at
their best, they've gotten timely turnovers from the secondary, they've
gotten you know, an interception from an aj Terrell or
interception from a Jesse base Jessy Bass is just a
ball hawk. I mean, he's got up the four greet
them against the Bucks alone force and fumbles. So I
really think that, you know, they you hate to say
(07:57):
that they need that because those are kind of things
that kind of happen in the course of a game.
You cannot bank on getting timely turnovers, Dave. I don't
want to say they've been lucky with them so far,
but they've been fortunate to get them so far. But
you just can't bank on it. And uh, they got
to figure out way. They gotta figure out why get
to the pastor they got to figure out out out
of way. I mean, you know, they're they're they're ten
weeks in now and before the end of the season,
(08:17):
that's the kind of thing that's going to really hurt them.
They're they're in first place in their division and they're
having their best season in a long time.
Speaker 3 (08:23):
But if you want to.
Speaker 4 (08:23):
Turn you know, what is a good team into a
better than good team, you got to get to the quarterback.
That's just the bottom line. And they know that, and
they they're they're, they're they're they're tweaking things and they're trying
to figure it out, but it has not come yet.
Speaker 2 (08:35):
Talk with Mark Romandi from ESPN.
Speaker 1 (08:36):
Mark, most important question, then where do you stand on
Jake fol versus Mike Tyson.
Speaker 3 (08:40):
That is an excellent question.
Speaker 4 (08:42):
And I'm not sure if you guys are aware of this,
but a lifetime ago, which is like February of this
past year, I actually broke the news that this fight
was happening. I was a combat sports reporter. I covered
I covered combat sports for eleven years, and I broke
that flight. I broke into that fight happening. And now
I'm about to watch it in Alasta. But uh, if
(09:04):
dressing me for my prediction, I'm going to say Jake
Paul in a in a lackluster eight round decision.
Speaker 3 (09:09):
That's my that's my but my expert opinion.
Speaker 4 (09:11):
Has some cover combat sports for over a decade, I
don't want to say the fight is necessarily rigged, but
Jake Paul, and I respect his hustle in these kinds
of things.
Speaker 1 (09:19):
He has a penchant for finding over the hill fighters
to give a payday too, and then claiming he outlasted.
Speaker 2 (09:26):
Is he ever going to fight someone worthwhile?
Speaker 4 (09:29):
Why would he? Why would he do that?
Speaker 2 (09:30):
Why?
Speaker 3 (09:31):
I mean he is making so much money?
Speaker 4 (09:33):
Uh, you know why?
Speaker 3 (09:34):
Why?
Speaker 4 (09:34):
I mean, I mean, that's well, respect Asking that question
is kind of like missing the point of what Jake
Paul is. And he'll tell you differently because promoter.
Speaker 3 (09:43):
But what he is is just a guy who boxing
is an.
Speaker 4 (09:46):
Extension of his content creation. He is creating content that
people are are paying, that people are purchasing. And that's
really all there is to it. It's it's you know,
it is we're we're kind of like in this post
sport place in combat sports. It's not really about the
sporting nature of it of the event. It's about how
how much people how much they can convince people to buy,
(10:07):
you know, how much they can stible to tune in
on Netflix or what have you buy it, buy a
ticket to come see the Cowboys stadium. It's so beyond
you know, actual sport that we know and uh, you know,
Jake Paul is going to keep doing these fights as
long as people continue to watch them, And this is
going to be the most watched fight of any kind
of the modern era.
Speaker 2 (10:26):
I can.
Speaker 4 (10:26):
I can promise you that because uh Netflix, I mean worldwide,
it's just going to be an insane audience and it's
going to be the most watched fight since. Like you know,
Mike Heyson was on ABC way back when.
Speaker 5 (10:38):
We Mark glasword for me, when you guys look at
this Broncos team and you look at the offense, what
is the outside of perception from your viewpoint of bone
Nicks and how he's performed as far this season, I think.
Speaker 4 (10:50):
It's pretty positive. I mean I've I've watched a little
bit of Bonux obviously, I watched him, and you know
when he was in college and uh the the attack.
The Atlanta Falcons coaching staff was a big fan. They
weit bix fans of boat Nicks. They send the team
out to uh to go scout him. Uh last last
I guess last spring in Oregon and Uh, I feel
like if Michael Pennis Jr. Wasn't available at number eight
(11:11):
when when the Buckets picked it, they might have taken
him Boutnicks. You know, they might have taken bout Nicks there.
They liked them a lot, So I think the perception
is very high. I think that, uh you know, from
my perspective, it looks like he's he's a guy that
can be a franchise quarterback. You know, he's athletic. You know,
he can. You know, he he kind of fits the
mold of the modern of the modern quarterback, you know
a little bit. You know, he get out of the pocket,
he can run, he can plays a live which is
(11:32):
so key, you know in today's NFL. I think, uh,
I think you all got something over there in bo Nicks.
Speaker 2 (11:37):
Well, we certainly hope. So, Mark, we appreciate the time
this evening.
Speaker 1 (11:40):
You have fun watching the air quotes fight and I'm
with you all that probably decision at the end.
Speaker 2 (11:46):
So we appreciate your time this evening. Anytime, I appreciate it,
