at Don Julio.

Speaker 2 (00:17):
We hope to see out there a bi last one
this year.

Speaker 1 (00:20):
We're gonna go right out to the KWA Common Spirit
Hotline to bring on our guy Frankie Abbott from Let's
Talk Broncos. Frankie's film is the Twitter hand on Frankie.
How you doing this evening?

Speaker 3 (00:28):
I'm doing fantastic, man.

Speaker 4 (00:29):
How are you? You know?

Speaker 2 (00:31):
Better know?

Speaker 1 (00:31):
I had during the break, I got some little gaming
action going on Syracuse in Arkansas. So they're two different
games going, and both those things are kind of happening
during the break, so I was enjoying myself a little
bit there. I want to get right into this on
something that I'm worried I might not enjoy, and that
is this game tomorrow. The Broncos taking on the Bengals
in Cincinnati, and I'm a little worried about this one, man.

Speaker 2 (00:54):
I you know, the more I look at this thing,
the more nervous I get.

Speaker 1 (00:58):
I understand Cincinnati is frankly a bad defensive football team,
but that offense is something else, and it kind of
is their defense in the sense that you've got to
be able to keep up with them or else you're
in trouble.

Speaker 2 (01:08):
What do you think.

Speaker 1 (01:09):
About this game overall? And am I am I sniffing
in the wrong direction here?

Speaker 4 (01:13):
Uh No, I'm completely where you're at.

Speaker 3 (01:14):
This game terrifies me. I think this one like it's scary,
and this will be the first real test, I think
for the offense to show, like, hey, we need to
be able to put up thirty plus points without the
aid of a multiple.

Speaker 4 (01:25):
Defensive touchdowns or two. So hopefully they're able to do
that and we actually see.

Speaker 3 (01:29):
Kind of bow play kind of like he did in
that Atlanta Falcons game. But so much of it is
going to come down to kind of how they kind
of perform against the horrible rushing defense of the angles,
which has just been such an issue for this Broncos
team the past. Few weeks, especially as the teams that
they've moved away from really leaning into the QB run game.
I know they still kind of use a lot of
that RPO game, but they really seem to have kind

(01:51):
of just pulled back from going to cure QB draw
kind of let's just let Bo kind of utilize his
legs a little bit more. So. I hope we get
to see them kind of play a little bit of
that possession game, keep the weight ball away from the Bengals.
But I completely agree with you. This one scares me
a lot, and I don't know, I'm interested to see
if the offense can keep up.

Speaker 2 (02:07):
I am as well. On the defensive side of things.

Speaker 1 (02:10):
Good news for the Broncos as Riley Moss will be back.
That should help a defense that's played extremely well all
year but has shown a few cracks in recent weeks.
You're up against ke Higgins, You're up against Jamar Chase
and an offense that likes to you know, likes to
throw on first down. The Bengals like to throw that
hit route on first down. They like to wait because
the Broncos will play off coverage and what they like
to do is wait and as soon as you start

(02:31):
to bite down, you want to play bumper. You want
to bite down and buzz at safety. Then then they
like to hit you with the double move and go deep.
And it's really effective with all the pass catchers that
they have. But does the Broncos defense match up well here?
And what is your biggest worry?

Speaker 3 (02:44):
I mean, honestly, jim Ar Chase is obviously the biggest worry.
He's the best receiver in football that would appear this season,
and I mean he's just been dominant both inside playing outside.

Speaker 4 (02:53):
He had a touchdown on the backfield this year.

Speaker 3 (02:55):
And you know, I know the kind of hope for
Broncos Country, all the Broncos fans out there that Patricks
their Tan is going to be able to shadow him,
which he will obviously do I think for as many
snaps as he possibly can. But sadly, that's just kind
of not a realistic thing to imagine that on every
single route that Jamar Chase runs, you're going to be
able to have Patricks their Tan. So it really comes
down to I think how well Jaquon McMillan can play.

(03:17):
He has been just such a force kind of defending
the run. I think coming downhill in the screen game,
and the Bengals don't really have the best auxiliary blocking pieces,
so I think if you can really have him kind
of create some negative plays on these early downs. The
Broncos have been the best or the highest blitz rate
defense on first and second down. They kind of drop
back a little bit more on third down. But if
you can hopefully just get the Bengals consistently behind the

(03:39):
sticks like they want to do, or at least, you know,
blow them down enough, I think that they can actually
have a decent chance. Like you mentioned, Riley Moss being
back is huge. I think it'll be very interesting to
see how much Joe Burrow goes after him early on.
You know, like, hey, let's test the guy who's coming
off of a you know, injured lower body. Let's see
how he kind of performs going up against one of
the bigger above the Rimors.

Speaker 4 (04:00):
And t Higgins, And I think that's kind of going to.

Speaker 3 (04:02):
Be where you have to hope that he can kind
of match up and maybe create an interception or maybe
create a badged past or something that can really make
a huge splash play for this defense.

Speaker 1 (04:10):
Talking with Frankie Abbot, Frankie Film on Twitter. You know, Frankie,
I look at this offense, You're probably the more underrated
component of the Bengals offense. He's the tight end position.
They got two guys that are maybe not the best
blockers but kind of ultra athletic pass catchers in Mike
a Seki.

Speaker 2 (04:24):
And Drew Sample.

Speaker 1 (04:26):
Advanced Joseph defenses traditionally have been a little weak against
a tight end. Does that make you nervous in the Hey,
we've got to shut them down.

Speaker 2 (04:33):
We got to get behind the sticks and shut them
down on third down.

Speaker 3 (04:36):
Honestly, not too much. I mean, it's all obviously going
to be a mismatch thing. Joe Burrow is going to
kind of get his money working over the middle of
the field whenever he wants to. But you're still going
to be able to, I think, be able to use
guys like Cody Barton and Brandon Jones, who have just
been at least in the past game exceptional. This year,
I think you're gonna be able to use those guys
to kind of know if I get SICKI a little bit.
While he has been productive, I don't think he's necessarily

(04:57):
a weapon that's going to be able to completely, you know,
change the game for you. And outside of that, I mean,
again it's if you're willing, I think, to let guys
like Mike just get sicky decide the game. All the
attention really needs to be put on those guys on
the outside.

Speaker 1 (05:11):
Talking with Frankie Abbott Frankie's film, what encourages you about
this matchup as you look at it? What are some
positives that you think we can take away as we
head into this line.

Speaker 3 (05:20):
Well, it was nice seeing Audrick estimate it a little
bit more work against the Chargers. I think everybody kind
of really like to see that resume a bit more
in the second half. But when you look at this
Bengals defense, I mean they are a very low light box,
or they play a very high percentage of light boxes.
They are very weak when it comes to playing their
defensive interior and on the edge position outside of Trey
Henderson because of injuries and just some guys that maybe

(05:41):
haven't developed as much as they would have liked to.
So I think that's kind of an opportunity for at
least the offensive line of Denver to be able to
hopefully get some push up front and then if you
can get kind of audric estimate, maybe Javonte Williams, but
it seems like that ship has kind of sailed. If
you can get one of those two guys to that
second level, hopefully kind of take advantage of some of
the you.

Speaker 4 (06:00):
Know, weaker options they have at that.

Speaker 3 (06:02):
Level of their defense. In the third level, I think
they do have an opportunity to be able to turn
this into a really you know, good ball possession game
for them to take the ball away from Joe Burrow.

Speaker 4 (06:10):
But again, it's kind of.

Speaker 3 (06:12):
One of those things where we just haven't seen it
enough this year for me to be like, they are
going to be able to lean on that, but you
have to against the defense like this.

Speaker 2 (06:20):
Yeah, I think so.

Speaker 1 (06:21):
You know, this is one of the things I was
talking about in the opening segment is he's, you know,
philosophically that this team sort of aligns with a lot
of the Peyton Man and Colts teams, and that's it's
stacked to the offensive side of the ball. The offensive
line isn't the greatest, although they keep putting assets into it.
You're really looking at two players on defense, a pass
rusher for the Colts. It was Freey you know, and
and and a dB and and the best way to

(06:42):
beat this team is to take the air out of
the balloon as it were. You know, I have long,
sustained drives on your own on offense, and then try
to play defense and turn them over, you know, as
best you can. You know, the defense and potentially turning
them over is something that I'm not quite as worried about.

Speaker 2 (06:59):
I do leave will get a turnover at some point, tomaw.

Speaker 1 (07:01):
But the question for me is can this offense put
together those kinds of sustained drives even against a defense
as bad as Cincinnati. We haven't shown that outside of
maybe I think the end of the Kansas City game.

Speaker 3 (07:15):
Yeah, no. And I think this is one too where
Seans need to have to amp up the intensity the aggression,
especially on like these fourth and third down calls. This
is not the type of game where you can be
settling for field goals in the first half. If you
have the opportunity to, you know, get the midfield, you
need to try to get yourself into the high red zone.

Speaker 2 (07:30):
You need to be able to kind.

Speaker 3 (07:31):
Of score touchdowns against this team, because, as we saw
last week, if you're only king to going into half
with a ten in eight point lead. Sadly, this offense
doesn't have the juice in the running game to put
games away like that, So you really need to be
able to consistently put up big points on the board,
not just oh, we had three successful drives, but we
walked away with nine points.

Speaker 1 (07:51):
What did you think of the decision to throw the
ball in the closing seconds of the ultimately the loss
to the Los Angeles Charters.

Speaker 4 (08:01):
It's a tough decision.

Speaker 3 (08:02):
I don't know. I mean, obviously I didn't like it,
didn't like the result more, But you know, it's kind
of one of those that it's an air you hope
that it's kind of not a the blip on the
radar and says something you have to really monitor. But
I don't know. I think it's just kind of a
rough moment in a season that's been overall pretty good.

Speaker 1 (08:19):
Talking with Frankie Abba from Let's Talk Broncos and Frankie's
film on Twitter, what have you thought of bo Nick's
overall this season? It was a slow start, but certainly
the middle of the schedule it seemed the game slowed
down for him. He looks, at worst like an NFL
starting caliber quarterback and who knows where the ceiling goes
from here?

Speaker 2 (08:36):
What do you think of where he is right now?
What do you think of where he could be?

Speaker 3 (08:40):
I think you nailed it perfectly with just saying right now,
I'm comfortable calling him an NFL starter. As for what
the ceiling can be, ceiling conversations are always going to
be so difficult, especially I think the best example we're
seeing of, you know, the ceiling conversation. You look at
a guy like Jared goffin Detroit, who it seems like
every season because he's working with the same offensive staff,
because he's getting more comfortable in the offense because they
keep adding more assets. There really isn't a ceiling on

(09:03):
the offense that guy can run. And I'm not trying
to say that's what Bonnix can be, but I think
that's kind of the pathway you have to hope for.

Speaker 4 (09:09):
And I think at the.

Speaker 3 (09:10):
Very least right now, you know, there's always the chance
you draft your first round quarterback and by this point
in the season you're saying, we're going to have to
treat another.

Speaker 4 (09:18):
First round quarterback.

Speaker 3 (09:19):
Luckily that's not the case for Denver this year, and
I think that's kind of a blessing and we can
all kind of take a deep breath and be like,
all right, who knows.

Speaker 4 (09:26):
Where it's going to be for the rest of those
rookie contract but we at least.

Speaker 3 (09:28):
Get to have a couple more years of evaluation. We're
not immediately pulling the flyer alarm and saying, all right,
we got to clean house again.

Speaker 4 (09:34):
So that's what I'm comfortable with them being at.

Speaker 3 (09:36):
I think you can design a really talented or a
really strong offense around him because of what he offers
you in the running game, because of what he offers
you outside of the pocket, his ability to limit negative
plays with his pressure to sacerate, his ability to kind of,
I don't know, work.

Speaker 4 (09:50):
These quick game concepts with anticipation. I think the floor
is very high.

Speaker 3 (09:55):
But again the question becomes how high can that ceiling
become once you add some more horses to the stable.

Speaker 2 (10:01):
Yeah, I tend to agree with that.

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Speaking of the horses in the stables, we look around
this offense, they really don't have a dynamic tight end
that's a playmaker, and the run game has just been
a mess this year. A part of that, I think
is the constant shuffling in and out of different backs
in different situations and not really letting anyone get in
a rhythm. But as you look at those two positions,
which is the bigger need going into next year?

Speaker 3 (10:23):
Oh man, that's tough. I like doing running back. I
really think that if they can find a difference maker
in the past game out of the backfield as well.

Speaker 4 (10:31):
I actually don't hate.

Speaker 3 (10:32):
This tight end room. Like, yes, I know that there
are going to be grace that they don't have, you know,
a Pro Bowl All Pro candidate, but they have useful guys.
I talk about this all the time with Robbie on
fullfield read where when I imagine the roster next year, yes,
I hope that they add, you know, one of these
top one hundred, top one hundred and fifty picks at
tight end. But I don't think that that guy is
necessarily going to.

Speaker 4 (10:52):
Be taking you know, all of the day one snaps.

Speaker 3 (10:54):
You know, I think a guy like Adam Trautman, if
you can get him to stick around, he's a decent
enough option to have a year you know, maybe one
a one B for next year. Guy like Nate Admons
hasn't been useful this year. I know obviously she's trying
to flex it between his positions, but I think if
you look to upgrade the running back room, you find
a guy that can be a solid three down back
and it doesn't even have to be a superstar.

Speaker 4 (11:13):
I mean, look at the guy they're facing the.

Speaker 3 (11:15):
Borrow and Chase Brown. If you can find a weapon
like that, I think that's going to open this whole
thing up.

Speaker 2 (11:20):
Yeah, I tend to agree.

Speaker 1 (11:21):
And if you go back and you look at, you know,
the Sean Payton offenses that were that were the most
highly successful. They had a productive running back at a
productive tight end, and they were able to get to
Sean Payton asis produced four All Pro seasons at tight
end from three different tight ends. So you know, that's
something I think that it's certainly something to keep our
eye on as we go forward. Kansa City Chiefs lock
up the number one seed beating the Pittsburgh Steelers on

(11:44):
Christmas Day, there's the potential that they could rest starters
for a part of or even all of the final game,
specifically if the Broncos clinch against the Angles. But if
they don't, you know, you're probably the scenario where Kansas
City wants to look to, you know, to to see
what they could do there. They probably want to get
their starters reps at least for the first half of
that game because it's going to be such a long

(12:06):
layoff with the number one, you know, with having to buy.
If you know, what's your panic level if the Broncos
lose this game.

Speaker 3 (12:15):
This is gonna sound like major cope. My panic level,
I don't think will be too high. Like at the
end of the day, this season was kind of like
like they're already playing with free money. In my opinion,
we all knew going into the season what this was
going to be with the with the dead cap they
were kind of taking on with kind of all the
change over rookie quarterback YadA, YadA, YadA. So already achieving
in above five hundred season should be looked at a success.

(12:38):
But again that's major cope.

Speaker 4 (12:40):
It all falling.

Speaker 3 (12:41):
Apart would be definitely a big like, you know, especially
with you know, not to say that bo Nix has
struggled a little bit in the most recent weeks, but
we did kind of see that five iners that can
stretch for a couple of games. When you think about
all the close moments. The block field goal against Kansas City, obviously,
it would be pretty gout wrenching, especially. I Mean, one
thing I talked about as we kind of got into
the beginning of the season is like a lot of

(13:02):
I think the AFC stalwarts, they are going to be,
you know, the strongest teams for the next coming years.
Teams like the Bengals obviously are struggling a little bit
right now. It teems like the Dolphins that kind of
not had the best season, the Broncos have a really
good opportunity to see the wild card here, and it's
just you don't get that many of these. When you
talk about being in a division with Patrick Mahomes, like,
you got to take advantage of the years where you

(13:22):
get your chance that you do.

Speaker 1 (13:24):
Talk with Frankie Abbot at Frankie's film on Twitter. Let's
say they do make the playoffs. Let's say they clench
either this week or or against Kansas City. At that point,
it's it's anybody's ball game. I mean, you basically start
a new season, it's single elimination and it doesn't really matter.
You're probably staring down the barrel of a road trip
to Buffalo, you know, in that scenario. But you know,
I mean, what is your optimism level that they could

(13:46):
do more than just make the playoffs?

Speaker 3 (13:50):
Man, it's tough when you have to go up against
one of those quarterbacks like Josh Allen Lamar Jackson. Mean again,
they're gonna have to go up again Stilbert tomorrow, where
it's not great. Like I truly look at the team
in Buffalo and I'm not sure that there's really a
better team in the league right now. And that's probably
partially because of you know, my distand for the Kansas
City Chiefs, But I don't know, I don't think my
optimism would be too high. But I really think just

(14:12):
it's not so much about you know, putting on a
great game. Yes, you don't want to get absolutely stunk,
and you know, whatever opportunity they get to give themselves.
But I really think it's just more so about, like man,
being able to come together as a group again this
season where they were written off from day one, They
were written off the second they made the Bonux draft pick.
They were written off long before that.

Speaker 4 (14:31):
It's pretty cool to be able to do that.

Speaker 3 (14:33):
And I think it's all about just as we've heard
Sean Payton talk about building the culture within that building.
So I don't know, I.

Speaker 4 (14:39):
Don't think they'd have the greatest chance to advance.

Speaker 2 (14:41):
Sadly, I wish I.

Speaker 3 (14:42):
Felt more confidence maybe in these last couple of weeks.
If we see the rung game really come alive, I'd
be like, Okay.

Speaker 4 (14:48):
They can be kind of one of those like beat
you up teams. We're going to play some really stout
defense and keep the ball away from you.

Speaker 3 (14:54):
But as we talked about with this Bengals game tomorrow,
I'm just not sure they can do that this season.

Speaker 1 (14:58):
Well, to be sort of with you, but you know,
there's always the hope. Of course they say that's that's
what we'll kill you. But I appreciate you taking the time, Frankie,
give us your prediction for tomorrow.

Speaker 4 (15:09):
So I already put out one.

Speaker 3 (15:11):
I mean, I'm gonna go thirty one twenty seven Cincinnati,
which is a crushing thing to say in my soul,
but I'm until I see this offense prove to me
that they can put up thirty points when they need to,
I'm gonna I'm gonna lean a little bit out. So
I'm gonna lean Cincy today.

Speaker 2 (15:24):
Sadly, all right, well, I appreciate it.

Speaker 1 (15:26):
We appreciate the time Frankie Abbott at Frankie's film on Twitter.
You'll give him follow He's definitely a good follow and
looking forward to catching up with you again here soon.
I appreciate you.

Speaker 3 (15:35):
Man, that's so much trapping me on.

Speaker 2 (15:36):
Don't worries at all. Take her. We gotta hit a break,
we come back. We're gonna get back into this. I
want to hear that story from Charles Barkley.

Speaker 1 (15:43):
We'll get the audio on that that he got great
gumble laughing on the air talking about washing his uniform
back in the day.

Speaker 2 (15:49):
Well, you'll be back in just a moment.

Speaker 1 (15:55):
This is the.

Speaker 2 (15:56):
Text and I'll get that story.

Speaker 1 (15:57):
And they're great gumble audio here which charl Parkley, Kenny
Smith and Clark Kelli here in just a second. I
want to thank Frankie Abbatt for joining us in the
last segment.

Speaker 2 (16:05):
You miss any part of that.

Speaker 1 (16:06):

bit make that thing work. Zach wild at the audio

(17:05):
I wanted to take because this is my enduring memory
of Greg Gumble is not any particular signature call that
he made or anything else. It's him absolutely losing his
mind laughing at Charles Barkley and the incredulity that Clark
Kellogg and Kenny Smith bring to this story. Charles Barkley's
acho a storyteller. He's a great storyteller, and some of
them may actually be true. This one, for whatever reason,

(17:27):
reminded me of not only Greg Gomble, but reminded me
of Alfred.

Speaker 2 (17:31):
Williams, who would have appreciated a story like this as well.

Speaker 5 (17:34):
I mean, it's so much stuff that goes into this,
and you shout out to all the trainers also to
have and the guys who do all the uniforms, to
get the uniworms clean up and everything, because I mean,
I'm so old. We used to take a shower in
our uniforms because you know, we flew commercial.

Speaker 2 (17:51):
My first threat, there's no error when you get yes
it is, you're making this on going.

Speaker 5 (17:57):
There's no way that you were supposed to walk in uniform.

Speaker 2 (18:01):
When I'm making this up. I'm not making this up.
I didn't finished. I never heard no one in the
right minded of don let him finish in it.

Speaker 5 (18:09):
When I'm soap, they give you soaping, let him no, Kenny.
When I first got to the NBA, we flew commercial,
Yes exactly, I'm not just.

Speaker 1 (18:16):
Agreeing with those.

Speaker 5 (18:17):
So I ate the night before and flew the next morning.
When was you exactly gonna get your uniform clean? You
had to wash your uniform yourself. So after the game,
when you got to your room, you took a shower
in your uniform and dried and dropped on from the
commercial outline.

Speaker 2 (18:32):
The next year you could clamp it. That's why you
had to let him come off. Have you ever heard
of this in your life? All right, well, how are
y'all cleaning y'all uniform? Y'all planning in funking? You know?

Speaker 5 (18:45):
Somebody lost in the dly when you're when you're flying
the next.

Speaker 2 (18:49):
Morning, you can clean your uniform without showering in it.
That is that is that is possible. The nactually clean
it with without showering. It is you don't have to
have it.

Speaker 5 (18:58):
Oh yeah, no no, but it's easier to do it
that way.

Speaker 2 (19:04):
It suck it that way. I'll tell y'all.

Speaker 1 (19:11):
Let's let's say, let's just say that that people, people
will have to.

Speaker 2 (19:15):
Count us as education. Are you take it off? You
wash it? Well, it's just easy to clay on that note.

Speaker 5 (19:27):
On that note, let's get your back out to dream
Girl and join Iron Eagle.

Speaker 6 (19:32):
I don't know why that is my enduring memory of
Greg Gumble keeping control of that desk as Clark Kellogg,
he and Katie Smith all melt down listening to Charles
Barkley relay a story of having to wash.

Speaker 2 (19:46):
His uniform by wearing it in the shower.

Speaker 1 (19:50):
Apparently Charles Barkley was playing basketball in the nineteen tens,
uh in, not actually the nineteen eighties as it were,
But yeah, that was I don't know why that one
stuck with me on why I remember that one so much.
I mean, it's a funny story, it's funny anecdote. But
Greg Gumbel was a great announcer. He's paired with Trent
Green for a number of years, you know, doing calls
for football, and I just just did a great job

(20:12):
with it. It was it was kind of the opposite of
the bombast and and the you know that everybody else did.
He just did a quiet, understated call that you know
what was going on, was clean, concise, wasn't ever fumbling
around with anything, and really a pros pro And he
will be missed, you know, seventy eight years old, passing
away may rest in peace. I want to pivot to
I want to pivot to talking about Broncos and Bengals again.

Speaker 2 (20:34):
Getting back to that, I want to do a little
buffs talk as well, buffs BYU. We can get into
that right now before we get back to it.

Speaker 1 (20:40):
We'll get into Broncos and Bengals back with Mike Petrocla
at the top of the hour. To me, and I've
been over this a few times, but I'll say it again.
First of all, this matchup is a disappointment. Getting what
he's what amounts to a de facto conference game is
a disappointment.

Speaker 2 (20:55):
I'm sorry it is.

Speaker 1 (20:57):
You know, you want something a little bit more exotic.
But with all these weird old Bowl tie ins and
everybody switching conferences and going back to the last year
that you had the tie in and the last conference
you were, all this kind of stuff, it winds up
being Colorado taken on by U down there at the
Alima Bowl and disappointing matchup. That said, I think it
could be a fun game, you know, I do think

(21:18):
see you as a good shot at winning it.

Speaker 2 (21:21):
I do believe that they're prepared for it.

Speaker 1 (21:23):
They've certainly taken the town of San Antonio by storm.
If you paying attention at all to social media, you'll
see that.

Speaker 2 (21:34):
San Antonio has really embraced Colorado.

Speaker 1 (21:38):
Does it embrace see you, does embrace coach Prime and
a Shadora Travis Hunter and kind of made it a little.

Speaker 2 (21:43):
Bit of their own.

Speaker 1 (21:44):
And that's been sort of fun to watch as the
bowl experience in and of itself, something that Colorado has
not participated in for a while and very very infrequently before.

Speaker 3 (21:55):
That is.

Speaker 2 (21:59):
Fascinating to watch.

Speaker 1 (22:00):
You know, last time Carlo had a Bowl it was
you know, it was the Mike McIntyre era. I believe
it was the Alamo Bowl back then as well, but
it's been prior to that had been a long time,
and you know, nobody that's that's on this staff, nobody
that's it's on this team. Was there's any recollection of
that because it was obviously well before their time here.

(22:21):
So you know, that part of it I think is fun.
The bowl experience, that part of it I think is fun.
And I think that's something that as we've devalued, the
bowls in and of themselves.

Speaker 2 (22:36):
Has gotten lost along the way.

Speaker 1 (22:38):
The bowl experience one of the more enduring memories that
I'll have of of the Bowl experience.

Speaker 2 (22:45):
I was down.

Speaker 1 (22:46):
I was living in Tampa at the time, and the
bowl game there was had it featured Urban Meyer against
Joe Paterno Penn State and watching those guys come down,
and you know, Meyer told him a music anecdote about
sending his resume to Joe Pop back in the day
and trying to get hired.

Speaker 2 (23:07):
And he couldn't get on his staff.

Speaker 5 (23:10):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (23:10):
Paturno came in and you know it was I'm pretty
sure I don't remember if it was the last bowl
game he coach, but it was close to it, and
U it was certainly it felt like Joe Paturno was
sort of out of touch with the time. He came
in and gave this you know what was you know,
Urban came in and gave something that was you know,

(23:31):
in a music anecdote. There was a little self effacing
which was rare for Urban and you know, it made
the room left. Joe pa gave like this sort of
like pep Rally type speech.

Speaker 2 (23:43):
I gotta go on, we gotta give it all.

Speaker 7 (23:44):
You know.

Speaker 1 (23:45):
It was I don't know, it felt it felt a
little out of touch, but it was certainly it was
certainly an interesting Bowl experience and getting to cover that
and watch that happen in real time.

Speaker 2 (23:56):
I think it was the Outback Bowl, if I remember correctly.
I can't at this point, I can't even remember.

Speaker 1 (24:02):
It's I struggle to remember who was where, with what
and who was coaching what at that point in time.
But that was that the bull experience, Like that experience
in and of itself was something.

Speaker 2 (24:12):
It was certainly fascinating. And that's the thing I think
that get sort of.

Speaker 1 (24:15):
Lost as there is no importance to a lot of
these bulls anymore. You know, if so many players opt out,
you've got you've got transfer portal guys that wipe out
teams before they even to watch it and say what
thirty one guys in the portal something like that. You
were gonna say something second, Oh no, I keep going okay,
you look like your wrests.

Speaker 2 (24:36):
So it's something that gets lost, and the experience gets lost.
The importance of a lot of those things get lost.

Speaker 1 (24:40):
Not that the bulls were important to with, but you
get the idea, like any importance that was there gets lost,
and now it's it's fun to watch. See you sort
of get wrapped up in that experience. Is it as
a what you would hope is an ascending program. If
they've sort of taken this town of San Antonio, the

(25:01):
city of San Antonio by storm, and you know, San
Antonio's kind of embraced them as one of their own,
it's it's I don't know if we make them an
unofficial sister city to the state or something like that,
but it's certainly been been fun to watch that and
watch a lot of the social media play out as
coach Prime. It plays into the history to see you
a little bit, we're gonna get win this one for
Peggy and and and go from there, and you know,

(25:23):
it's it's just been it's been fun to watch on
social media. It's been fun and see you doing the
right thing and in uh, buying insurance policies for the
players that in case they get hurt or injured in
this game, to make sure that uh, you know, the
people can play if they want to and don't have
to make a business decision.

Speaker 3 (25:38):
Uh.

Speaker 2 (25:38):
And that's you know, I think that's great.

Speaker 1 (25:41):
I think that's I've always been a fan of doing that,
and certainly they've been able to do that. For certain players,
but I'm more a fan that they were able to
do that and kind of blanket and sort of blanket
the uh you know, all the players that want to
get involved. Five six, six nine zeros text line. Guys,
I'm tell me what you think. Brian wants to know
if if I like meaningless Bowl games, if my wallet does,

(26:08):
he goes of you, uh who know me? Know that
certainly been invested in the Syracuse Washington state game.

Speaker 3 (26:14):
With that.

Speaker 1 (26:14):
By the way, the running back for Syracuse, Quinn Allen,
maybe keep an eye on him. That's somebody who would
fit in very well here in Denver very well. And
what Sean Payton likes to do something to keep your
eye on there. And then you know, we got Arkansas
on Texas Tech on the other screen over here. It
gives us a chance to kind of uh kind of
watch my hogs uh do a little ooopig. So he

(26:35):
is are beating up on Texas Tech six and six
Razorbacks beating up on the eight to four Texas Tech.

Speaker 2 (26:42):
Team there and you know, meaningless Bowl games.

Speaker 1 (26:45):
I that was sort of thing as soon as they
instituted a playoff for any that kind of stuff. That's
what I said, I was like, you you've made You've
rendered the bowl system obsolete.

Speaker 2 (26:54):
How are you going to keep them relevant?

Speaker 1 (26:59):
And it relies eyes on creating an exotic atmosphere games
that you want to see but wouldn't otherwise get to
see because they play in super conferences now.

Speaker 2 (27:08):
And you know, I think the.

Speaker 1 (27:14):
I think that's that's that's sort of one of the
things because the Super Conferences has sort of been the
death knell of all of this too, is the teams
that are joined these super conferences have found out it's
actually tougher to make the playoffs when you do stuff
like that. You know, look at Alabama on the outside
looking in this year, and maybe they should have made
the playoff instead of SMU as we showed, we saw
some of the.

Speaker 2 (27:34):
You know, some of those opening round matchups.

Speaker 1 (27:36):
There's a question of deserve and what deserve means when
it comes to making the NFL playoff. First of all,
I don't think people deserve anything. I think you earned
something and I think sen you earned the right to go.
And I say that as an SEC Hank right, I'm
constantly saying that. You know, I was sitting there with Vandy,
you know, Diego Pabon. Look, I for me, I don't

(28:00):
think the bowl games are meaningless per se. I think
there is in CU's case, a point of pride in
making it back to a Bowl game in the second
year of this administration, given the irrelevance that program had
largely had for the last twenty years.

Speaker 2 (28:17):
So I think there's something to that.

Speaker 1 (28:19):
But by and large, yeah, I mean, if you're just
making bowl games every year, you're kind of an irrelevant
program anyway.

Speaker 2 (28:25):
In a different sort of way. In the muddled middle,
you got.

Speaker 1 (28:29):
To make the playoff to get relevant, and I think that's,
you know, that's the use next goal here, making sure
that they make the playoffs going forward.

Speaker 2 (28:43):
But getting back to deserve and earn.

Speaker 1 (28:46):
There are people who tall I deserve, they deserve to
be and they deserve that, they deserve that.

Speaker 2 (28:50):
I don't believe in that word when it comes to sports.
You don't deserve anything.

Speaker 1 (28:56):
You earn whatever it is, and that's that you earn
another yard, you earn a first down, you earn a touchdown.
You do that through the work, you earn through your record,
a playoff berth.

Speaker 2 (29:08):
That's why I often.

Speaker 1 (29:09):
Hate the word, and I've seen kirkirk Street out there
advocating for you know, blue.

Speaker 2 (29:12):
Blood programs and whatever else.

Speaker 1 (29:14):
I like kirkirk Street, but I fundamentally disagree with his
analysis of the direction that the playoff committee should go.

Speaker 7 (29:22):
And the blue blood programs already get plenty of a
leg up because of the preseason polls. We reward those
blue blood programs every single year with preseason polls that
give them the inside track to make a playoff down
the line.

Speaker 2 (29:34):
Absolutely, and that's sort of the problem.

Speaker 1 (29:35):
It's the reason that UCF, when having an undefeated season,
did not make any particular playoff, even though they should have.

Speaker 2 (29:41):
And to me, that's the thing. If a team goes undefeated,
they should make the playoff.

Speaker 1 (29:44):
If we're easy to go undefeated with any easy schedule,
teams would do it, but they don't.

Speaker 2 (29:48):
There are plenty of teams with easy schedules, and we
see what happens.

Speaker 7 (29:54):
And Tennessee had a better sec resume than either Bama
or all this, and they were the team that got
I'm the worst in the first round. So I don't
I just maybe Alabama in and all this would have
given us a better game. But I don't feel overly
confident projecting that you.

Speaker 1 (30:08):
Know, six and one a half does the I don't
care ultimately either way. I think the main thing for
me is noticing that there's a couple of things here. One,
you got to earn it. You got to earn it
by winning. That's that's your resume at the end of
the day, that's your resume. And then two, we've got
to fix seasons in college football. The transfer portal happening
before bowl games in the playoffs is a crime.

Speaker 2 (30:30):
It's stupid. I don't understand why we do this.

Speaker 1 (30:35):
There is no reason to do this other than semester
transfer type stuff.

Speaker 2 (30:40):
We've got to find a better way with the transfer.

Speaker 1 (30:42):
Portal and how that works and go from there, because
gutting teams right before they play these games isn't that.
And we've created I mean, college football is even college,
but it's not amateur. It's it's professional football, now full
on professional football. So we've got to find a way

(31:03):
to do this because we can't pretend that these are
just students with that kind of thing. The majority of
the at this point, they aren't. And this was something
I worried about. We started paying guys, you know that
these are their overlooked aspects of this that would wind
up hurting the game. And this is where we're at
it is it hurts the game. Good on Arizona State

(31:23):
for mostly doing it correctly. Where Kenny Dillingham's like, yeah,
come play with me. We'll get your transfer stuff in.
You can play with me and you transfer on that.
They you know, we'll do whatever. You come practice here,
you do it. They've got the right idea and I
think people need to copy that for now, but there
needs to be a better.

Speaker 2 (31:37):
System for the transfer portal as well.

Speaker 1 (31:40):
We come back, we've got Mike Petraglia Jungle Roar podcast
going to talk to us about those Cincinnati Bengals
