Speaker 1 (00:00):
I am not been all bright, nor am I Nick Ferguson,
but just as handsome. I'm Anthony Rodriguez, also known as
a rod Here. I normally am the executive producer of
The Mandy Connell Show from noon to three here on KOA,
running all things social media as well, but with you
tonight fill in the chair here on this New Year's
Eve eve alongside Zach Sears on the other side of

(00:21):
the glass, joining me for an abbreviated Broncos country. Tonight,
we are taking you up here to six thirty more
coverage of our CU Buffalos taking on the third ranked
Iowa State cyclone, some awesome Big twelve matchup action here
for the CU buffskin covers at six thirty, game at seven,

(00:42):
and then we will be on following that as well.
Myself and Zach Segers. Well, we're gonna get right into it,
and while we do, we want you to jump in
on the conversations. We break down his Broncos Bengals matchup
and look ahead with some news as well from our
NFL Network insider Ian Rappaport about the Chiefs matchup coming
up on Sunday at two twenty five. But we want

(01:02):
to get you involved here in this next fifteen twenty
minutes while we're with you five six, six nine zero.
That is the Common Spirit Health text line. Basically, want
to get your thoughts on this game. Broncos fall thirty
to twenty four in overtime two part Question number one,
how are you feeling after the second straight loss, second
straight opportunity where the Broncos had a chance to clinch
a playoff birth gonna all come down to week eighteen

(01:23):
and then the conversation we're going to get into here
during this segment. Do you agree with Sean Payton's decision
to not go for two offer overtime potential tie and
or to get the win in ot Do you like
the decision? Do you wish they would have gone for two?
We're going to get into that, but right now, let's
go ahead and get from Sean Payton himself first. I

(01:43):
want to hear from what he had to say the
decision not to go for two the night of two
days ago, twenty eighth Saturday. Here was Sean Payton on
the decision to not go for two.

Speaker 2 (01:54):
Yeah, we did for a little bit and we felt
like with the momentum and we also knew a tie
was win, and so we discussed it and then we
trusted our relative debt decision.

Speaker 1 (02:06):
And here was Sean Payton today on if he second
guesses the decision to I'll go for to so forty
eight hours later, here's what Sean said to the media today.

Speaker 3 (02:15):
Oh, certainly, you go through it all the time, you know,
relative to what the call would have been based on
the outcome. You know, you always second guess or you
always do that as a head coach. I kind of
felt a trust in my gut at the moment, but yeah,
I think it's holble to do that.

Speaker 1 (02:32):
Hm okay. So reined it in a bit today in
the media availability in terms of the decision, and that's
human nature. Forty eight hours it obviously didn't go your
way in two. Fascet's number one. Obviously the bit of
the criticism of not going for two initially and then
not turning into you getting the win or the tie

(02:52):
in overtime against the Bengals. You fallow to nine and seventy.
Now have a winning you're in against the two time
raigning champ Kansas City Chiefs, or you get some help
with the Bengals and the Dolphins losing on Sunday. The
Bengals play on Saturday against the Steelers. The Dolphins will
be against the Jets at the same exact time as

(03:13):
the Broncos on Sunday. But we're gonna get into this
right now, and Zach will want to come to you
because the information before first and before we talk about this,
this this two point conversion, the Broncos will very likely
not officially officially officially I'm afore we get official word,
but the Broncos will likely not be playing against Pat Mahomes,

(03:35):
Chris Jones, and a good chunk of the starters. And
that was from our NFL networkst insider Ian Rappaport just
a little bit ago on KA Sports. You can find
that full interview at Kacolorado dot com. But but Zach,
I actually all cli back. I want to go back
into the two point conversion conversation because you and I
at chat about this before.

Speaker 4 (03:55):
Uh.

Speaker 1 (03:56):
I am of the mindset, and I think I'm in
the vast minority when it comes to those in Broncos country.
I never when it comes down the final seconds of
a game, I am never in the camp of going
for two. Never.

Speaker 3 (04:08):
Never.

Speaker 1 (04:08):
I don't care who's on the other side. I don't
care because it's a fifty to fifty chance of best
and you are you are putting yourself down to one play.
Anything can go wrong, and then you're and then you're
falling by one when in the final seconds. I much
prefer giving yourself a lot more opportunity to either put
together a drive, make a good defensive stop, or a

(04:30):
combination of things. If you believe in your entire team,
you go to overtime. So I like that from Sean.
But Zach, what I didn't necessarily like was what you
heard in that first cut, the mention of the word tie.
I understand that a tie benefits you in terms of
a tie would have clinched a playoff Berth, but we're
Chaoe Sports was talking about it. You and I are

(04:52):
talking about is Zach the amount of ties in the
last fifty years is so little? Was it in? It's
somewhere in the twenty amount of times it's happen, and
in the last fifty years it doesn't happened. So when
your mindset is we're gonna tie this thing up at
twenty four, we're going to go to overtime, you got
to say we're going to get this win. I don't
want to hear about a tie. I want to hear

(05:13):
you believe in your team, offense, defense, special teams to
go into overtime, not going just with one play, but
defense a sustained driver too on offense, and you get
the win with either a touchdown or game when you
feel goal. I don't want to hear about time. Do
you feel that same frustration, Zach.

Speaker 3 (05:30):
I don't.

Speaker 1 (05:31):
I want my head coach.

Speaker 4 (05:32):
And you know, if it was a player, if it
was a quarterback, maybe saying that, I'd have a different feel.
I want my head coach thinking strategically and thinking about
all the different outcomes.

Speaker 1 (05:41):
I know you're a Marvel guy.

Speaker 4 (05:42):
I want him doing the Marvel strange look at it,
or a doctor straight sorry, look at all.

Speaker 1 (05:46):
The different possibilities. Yeah, possibilities.

Speaker 4 (05:48):
Figure out which one is right when I go down
and thank you, appreciate it. But I mean, twenty one tie,
since you know, over the last fifty years, that's incredibly unlikely.
Over the last fifty years, we have two executed freeze kicks.
He used to be able to say there was just
one of those over the last fifty and then you
know a week ago, two weeks ago, there's another and
it ends up costing the Broncos the first.

Speaker 1 (06:10):
Of these two potential clinching games.

Speaker 4 (06:12):
So I want my coach thinking of those potential unlikelihoods,
and no, the plans shouldn't be approaching over time. You know,
let's play for the tie. It should be let's play
for the win. But knowing you've got that tie in
your back pocket, I think it's smart, especially, I mean,
we saw it. It came into play there in that
game where you know, one more first down in the
Broncos win or clinched up at playoff spot because they tie.

Speaker 1 (06:33):
Now, ironically, the t Higgins touchdowns third of the game
came with a minute and seven left in OT there
is a very good chance that the Broncos are going
to get that tie. So it was kind of worked out.
And I hear you, but I want you to think about, Okay,
we're gonna keep this can down the road in turns
of getting this win, or we're going for the dub

(06:54):
in OT. I love having it in the back pocket.
And maybe it's just me being silly in the sense
that even if you're thinking about how the tie kid
play in to this. I don't even want I don't
even want to hear about it, so Sean can think
about it. And I think, but I think with the
way that Sean let me put it like this. First
of all, I am a massive Sean Payton fan. Okay,

(07:17):
I love Sean Payton as a head coach. I love
him his head coach for his team. I understand that
there are obviously question marks the times of the play
calling and maybe being a twenty twenty four offense and whatnot.
But I love the fit here. I love what he's
been doing with Bo Nicks. I love the comps of
bo Bo to Drew. I love how that's kind of
playing in fruition Chase Daniel, by the way, massive fan

(07:41):
of what he's been saying to Poe Nicks all year long,
especially in the comparisons and Drew, and he knows Drew
very well. But but Sean is extremely methodical and how
he's constructed this team, how he plans to construct this
team moving forward after this season, and the messaging in
the locker room and the culture, and I think coming

(08:01):
from a guy with all of that at being said,
I don't know if a player in the locker room
would receive it extremely well. To hear about oh about
a tie being in the back of your mind or
a tie being a factors, it's it's human nature and
and to your point, Zac, it's honesty, because I think
we all think about when that little nugget is put

(08:22):
into your head, Hey, the tie gets you in. If
you think about it, you know that that's a factor.
As the game's winding down in OT and here in
the final minutes, you think that a tie could get
you in. But going into it and then saying it,
I think going into OT and then saying that that
was on your mind, I think, as honest as it
was and as much as it is true because it

(08:44):
was a factor, you tie, you're in, I get it.
I just think that you don't necessarily reference it, you
don't say it, And I know that sounds like, well,
I'm asking for its honesty, and that's not what I'm
asking for. I just I think that a lot goes
into the mentality for you, your team, you're culture, what you're building,
and what you're trying to do in that game. That's
that's where I think, Yeah, that.

Speaker 4 (09:04):
Part of coaching in the nfactly at any sport is
lined to the media, I mean and knowing what truths
to let out of the building and what I don't
know what messages, what framing, how do you want to
frame certain things? And I think you know, although I
definitely want my coach to be considering all the different possibilities,
I will agree with you that we don't know what

(09:25):
the messaging was on the sideline. But I sure hope
the messaging on the sideline wasn't all right fellas, let's
get the win, but we are okay with a tie
like I fully agree with you there and even to
the media. You know, maybe that shouldn't be the messaging
you want to have the mindset of we are always
going for the jugular, We're always going for the win.
But I don't mind it being an inside thought. I

(09:45):
hear you on your critique that maybe it shouldn't have
been an outside thought.

Speaker 1 (09:48):
Yeah. Now looking forward here in the final company is
here and again we're walking you up to six thirty
pre game of the Iowa State Cyclones and our SeeU
buffs for first excuse me?

Speaker 3 (10:01):
Tip?

Speaker 1 (10:02):
Is it seven? Almost aid first pitch thinking Rockies tip
is at seven and then following the conclusion of that broadcast,
myself and Zach you here. Now we'll be on on
KOA following, so we've got a couple more minutes with
you here. As we now look ahead, the Broncos are
now going to third of three opportunities to clinch and
this is the final one. This is going to all
come all down to it. Could not get it done

(10:23):
against the Chargers in LA, could not get done against
the Bengals in Cincinnati. Now coming up on Sunday, that's right,
it's not Saturday. There's a possibility of it depending on
the ramifications of the game and then how the other
games shook out. The NFL puts this one on Sunday.
Throwbacks in all with the Denver Broncos hosting the Kanstate
Chiefs in the regular home time slot two twenty five

(10:44):
on Sunday, and as Peter Schrieger mentioned, as well as
our NFL network getting sider Ian Rappaport, all signs are
pointing nothing official, and I don't think we really really
get official word just kind of I think just kind
of for teamsmanship, sportsmanship. I think it's just the way
it's going to go in terms of Pat Mahomes, Chris Jones,

(11:04):
various other starters not gonna be playing in this game.
All signs are pointing to that. So the KCB, the
KCB squad, the JAB squad, whatever you want to say,
the backups the preseason game esc if you will, coming
up for the Chiefs in their matchup with the Broncos,
they have no intention of putting it all out on

(11:24):
the field to win this game. The Broncos have every
chance now to reach ten wins and to reach the
playoffs for the first time since winning Super Bowl fifty.
As the Broncos fan out there, Broncos Country, five to
six six nimes. Here a common Spirit health text line.
You can also get involved on Twitter at Tayoy Collar, Anthony
Rod thirty three, at Zach underscore se or Zach Spell
with the cch Do you care at all about how

(11:47):
that could be considered not by me but by some
backing into the playoffs? Or oh he had to do it,
but it had to come against the Chiefs backups. You
couldn't do it against you, the A squads of the
Chargers or the Bengals, or do you like me say yo?
The Broncos are about to get in the playoffs for
the first time in a damn near decade since they

(12:09):
won Super Bowl fifty. We're gonna get to ten wins
in the first season with bo Nicks under center. And
it's jubilation because then they go into a matchup with
a Buffalo Bills team that to say that they have
expectations on them as an understatement house money baby, as
Zach and I were talking earlier, and he said, house
money man. And in terms of a game with blackjack,

(12:33):
you are going to get a big time win in
a hand this Sunday against the Chiefs, and then you
double down because on the next hand that looks good
because then you're playing the Bills in a team that
has all the pressure I just mentioned. I you want
the experience, you want that opportunity. You don't care how
you get there. The Broncos, Zach, if I were to

(12:56):
tell you, the Broncos and going in a week eighteen
not only control their destiny but a chance to reach
ten wins in the playoffs. They already have the first
winning season since twenty sixteen. Now they have a chance
to make the playoffs for the first time since winning
Super Bowl fifties. Act if I told you that you
had good take that before the season started, no matter
how Week eighteen shook out, and no matter who it
came against and who played or whatnot, I think we'd

(13:17):
all take it, would we not?

Speaker 4 (13:19):
Absolutely, you got to take it. You don't control your schedule.
You can control a lot of things in the NFL.
You don't control your schedule. You don't control who gets
to play you. And you know Alex Forsyth blocks up
that final play against the Chiefs the first time around.
They're not playing the backups this time because the Chiefs
are battling for the one seed, and maybe on the
flip side, the Broncos are playing their backups because they've

(13:40):
already got a playoff spot secured. I just you know,
it sucks, but you would like to have that Marquie
win against the Chiefs and get that deserved win back
that you know, you ended up losing that game in Arrowhead.
But I just think it all kind of works out.
You know, you should have had that win in the
first place. It kind of got robbed away by some

(14:00):
fluky thing, and now as a result of that weird
fluky thing, you're going to be playing Chris o Ledukin
or whatever his name is in Week eighteen, and you also,
I'll say this, it's not a given.

Speaker 1 (14:12):
You can lose this game.

Speaker 4 (14:13):
You know the Chiefs, I'm pretty sure in Mahome's debut
when they were resting starters, Momes came in and embarrassed
the Broncos at home.

Speaker 1 (14:21):
You're not guaranteed to win.

Speaker 4 (14:23):
These you still have to show up and win the game.
These are NFL professionals fighting for their jobs in the
league as well, And if the Broncos view this as
a preseason game, they have a very good chance of
losing it.

Speaker 1 (14:34):
Yeah, the Chiefs are fifteen to one for a plethora
of reasons, but let me tell you a good chunk
of them, especially this Chiefs team, a lot of it
has to do with their damn good coaching. They have
one of, if not the best coaching staff in the NFL.

Speaker 4 (14:46):
And you don't go fifteen and one with all the
roster intrition that there is in the NFL if you
don't have quality depth behind your starting guys, that is correct.

Speaker 1 (14:54):
And for a team that's fifteen to one in the season,
the way it's gone for him, the play calling, the LEADLeadership,
the culture, everything in Kansas City is a threat in
this game, even if they don't play their guys, even
if no starters played. Obviously some have to play just
because of logistics, so some are going to get some action.
But you don't think every player going out there, especially
a guy in Carson Wentz who probably would want to

(15:17):
start somewhere. Again, this guy's been around the block since
his time in Philly. Colts Commanders on miss and missing
another one. I think it's Commanders and then the Chiefs though, yeah, yeah,
so this is a guy the Rams as well. Yes, yes,
the rotation they've had at quarterback when it hasn't been staffered.
Baker Mayfield will who was killing over there in Tampa.
Good for him. I'm really happy for him. I tell

(15:39):
you man. It's a damn good coach team. You don't
mess around when it comes to facing against no matter
who it's going to be, if they're wearing a cheese uniform,
you do it. By the way, back to the criticism
real quick of how the Broncos could get there. You
don't think the Bengals, the Dolphins and their fans would
love to be in the Broncos situation and are laughing
at the idea of how you get there. The Bengals

(16:02):
need the Broncos to lose to Carson Wentz and the
B squad of the Chiefs, and the Dolphins to lose
to the Jets. The Dolphins need just the Broncos to
lose again to the B squad of the Kansas City Chiefs.
I either franchiseing their fans should be rightfully so laughing
at any criticism of how the Broncos get there. If

(16:22):
they get there, they had three opportunities. I understand that
they blew the first two, but they have an opportunity
to get to the playoffs for the first time in
almost a decade since they won Super Bowl fifty, get
to ten wins with a rookie quarterback, the definition of
house money. I mean, I don't understand it. No one
in the NFL would understand it. I don't care what
NFL fans around the country want to see in terms

(16:43):
of that seventeen Joe Burrow and the Bengals, Oh watch out,
you know two of McDaniel and that Dolphin squad. If
they get the seven. The Buffalo don't want to see
a division rival get out of here. Bo Nicks's been
lighting it up. The NFL has slowly been paying attention
put to bed the Bone Nicks arm conversation. Next Gen
stats bo Nicks is fifty one yard touchdown pass that

(17:04):
travel over sixty seven yards in the air, longest completion
by air distance of this season and the second longest
in the next Gen stats era, only behind PJ Walker
DJ Moore in Week eight and twenty twenty two, which
travel sixty seven point six bow Knicks has an arm
check down. Charlie can kiss my You know what, it's nonsense.
And so the Broncos with bo Nicks doing his thing,

(17:28):
have a chance to make the playoffs. That's awesome, all right.
Coming up right now is going to be pregame of
the Iowa State Cyclones and our CU Buffs Skip is
coming up at seven and we will be on the
other side, myself and Zach Sea. You're talking more about
this matchup with the Bengals looking ahead to the Chiefs
Broncos country. Now you're listening right here on KOA
