Speaker 1 (00:00):
Benjamin All, Brad Grant Smith here with you. Five six
sixty nine zero is the text line. Thanks to Paul
Klee and Cody Rourke for joining us in earlier segments.
You missed any that go to Broughcos Country, Dot that Com,
Slash Podcast and we get those. We go right out
to the Kway Concertil hot Lo. I hadn't bring on
our friend from CBS, romy Bean ROMI.
Speaker 2 (00:14):
How you doing?
Speaker 3 (00:16):
Oh, you know what I'm doing? Really good, Ben. It's
been a long long time since we woke up Monday
after the regular season with something.
Speaker 2 (00:23):
To be helpful about my first time covering this team.
I am no longer the Jakes.
Speaker 1 (00:28):
I Rick Lewis and I had our own special celebration
party be since we both started right after.
Speaker 2 (00:33):
Super Bowl fifty.
Speaker 3 (00:35):
Yes, thanks that so yeah, you.
Speaker 1 (00:37):
Can no longer call us the Jinks, the Broncos, check
the box, beat the Brakes off the you know, the
backups for Kansas City in that in that game. But now,
sweet that feeling had to be for guys like Garrett
Bowles and Courtland Sutton, long suffering here in Denver, and
I wonder across the country going the other direction.
Speaker 2 (00:55):
What that feeling was like.
Speaker 1 (00:56):
For Justin Simmons, who was you know, was like go
by the Broncos, signed on as a Falcons thinking they're
a playoff contender and winds up missing out again.
Speaker 3 (01:04):
Oh man, I've been thinking about that so much, Benin yesterday,
I actually just wrapped up my Monday Live show and
had papped a pan on and I said, man, it's
just so bad for Justin, and he just said, man,
you can't catch a break like you know, these guys
feel for him because it was the same thing where
he wasn't you know, Justin didn't ask for to leave,
(01:25):
just like Coyly and Sutton never did and gar Bowles
never did, which is why you're so happy for them,
right they stayed. They stuck with stuck with it. But
it breaks your heart a little bit for Justin, who
I would have loved to see on the other side
him to get in as well, because we know he
went through all the strikes that Garrett and Court went
through as well. So that certainly is a tough break.
(01:45):
And yet you feel bad, Yeah, he certainly do.
Speaker 1 (01:49):
And you know, obviously we always Justin Simmons success, but yeah,
certainly one of those things that I kind of had
my eye on when as I was watching the jubilation,
I'm like, you know, what's missing here is a guy
who put in a lot of that work, you know,
and really was a catalyst the last time the Broncos
defeated the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo last year.
Speaker 3 (02:07):
Yeah, you know, so interesting because we think that game
in Buffalo, by the way, feels like it was a
million years ago and it was only last year. But
I was kind of going back and looking at it
and I'm like, you know, a wow, a lot of
the guys who made big plays weren't you know, aren't
necessarily on the team anymore. So it feels in so
many ways so different this Broncos team this year to
last year. You know, I did ask Pat like, is
(02:29):
there anything you can take from that game? I know
it's a different season, a little bit different personnel, but
it was kind of, you know, a little bit of
your standard answer, but it was a you know, he said, like,
in that game, we learned that you have to do
everything right against a team like that. You can't can't
let them have you know, a lot of life, but
you also can't get you know, way down distracted when
(02:51):
things don't go right, like we don't have a fast
start or something like that. So, you know, interesting to
hear how they look at that, certainly, and I think
there is some stuff you can take from that game
a little bit. But the biggest takeaway I think it
was pat that is Orchard Park's a hard place to play.
And that's the thing is Bronco's country travels so well.
But like, I'm so curious what it's gonna look like
(03:12):
for this playoff because Bill fans ain't tell them their tickets.
Like there's a lot of places you could go and
buy really you know, tickets that are really expensive price.
Bill's not. They're not telling their tickets. So it's gonna
be hostile, it's going to be loud, it's going to
be cold. So it is one of those places that's
notoriously a tough place to play. I'm curious to see
(03:32):
how many you know, Bronco fends are actually even able
to get tickets for this one, all right, And normally
you talk about jumping through hoops for tickets, but this.
Speaker 1 (03:40):
Is a fan base in Buffalo literally jumps through tables.
So some of them on fire. So it's you know,
maybe maybe a bit different there. Interestingly, today we found
out that the door excuse me, the the Chicago Bears,
and the New York Jets want to interview Vance Joseph
for their head coaching vacancies. New Orleans and Chicago want
to interview David Shaw for their head coaching vacancy. And
(04:00):
then I was told earlier the Jim Leonard is going
to be in consideration for the vacant Indianapolis Colts defensive
coordinator job.
Speaker 2 (04:06):
How different is it a.
Speaker 1 (04:07):
Feeling to have your coaches suddenly coveted around the league? Yeah?
Speaker 3 (04:13):
I mean, big picture, it is a good feeling, like
because you want your coaches to be coveted, right. People
love it. We don't want to see DJ go, But
that's a good thing. I mean, you're doing something right
if they're getting interviewed. I think this is going to
be really interesting to look at that. Obviously you have
a lot more kind of insider insight. But I think
when I think about it, I think a couple of things.
(04:34):
I think DJ is going to be picky, and he
has to be, and he should be because it's kind
of no secret anymore that he didn't really get a
fair shake here when he's a head coach the first time. Like,
when you're a head coach, you should be able to
have all the power to pick all your own staff,
to pick all your own draft picks, and that wasn't
entirely the case for him here. So I think going
into a second stint as a head coach, there's probably
(04:58):
different questions he's going to ask you what to ask
because he did get burned in a little bit of ways.
So I think as far as there's a lot of
Broncos fans like, you don't want to lose Vance Joseph,
but he's not gonna just go unless it's the right opportunity.
I kind of think the other thing, too, is like
this is not a science by any means, but it
feels like you get two shots as a head coach
(05:19):
in the NFL. Usually I'm thinking through guys, how many
guys have gotten multiple you know, Mike Channon, all right,
he got three chances, Sure would get a third chance,
you know, Pick Carrol, guys like that. But I'm going
through and I'm thinking about, you know, let's just think
about Broncos one. Josh McDaniels, you got two chances. Adam Gaate,
he got two chances, Mike McCarthy, would he get a
(05:41):
third chance? Like, I feel like the second chance is
your big one. There's not a ton of guys to
get multiple chances after that. So I think Vance has
to know, like it's gotta be right because because that's
the shot. You know, you don't get that many. If
you fail twice, probably not getting a third chance.
Speaker 1 (05:57):
Why if you succeed somewhat the first time, you know
you you very rarely get the third chance already, Schoenheimer,
I think got three chances. But yeah, there's really just
not a lot of not a lot of names on
the list that.
Speaker 2 (06:08):
That get those kind of chances.
Speaker 1 (06:10):
Time with Robby being from CBS, I want to shift
gears here for just a minute. Something that was largely
forgotten was cused rather embarrassing loss to by you Dean
remains one and seven against ranked the pon it it
almost felt like they were ready to play and you're
just watching that game disappointing to facto conference game.
Speaker 2 (06:25):
You know, as as.
Speaker 1 (06:26):
We look forward, what is the what is the future,
what is the pulse of Colorado? At this point, as
they turned the page on the Schador Sanders and Travis
Hunter era.
Speaker 3 (06:34):
Yeah, I think, you know, it was such a disappointing
end because there was so much emphasis put on everybody's
gonna play, you know, and so you're you're people were
really hyped about it, and it's just been like two
teams that came out with two very different mentalities, and
you know, it was like they played, but at that
point you're like, oh, did they play? So it was
certainly a disappointing era, especially there was so much around
(06:57):
you know, we get one last chance to play together,
and there there was a kind of no fight out there.
It was certainly, like you said, a disappointing end. But regardless,
I think you look forward, I think it's exciting and
it's uncertain. Uh, you know, Juju looks like he's got
all the intangibles, but what is this team going to
look like? Without too true game changers in shore standards
(07:21):
and in Travis Hunter, and for that matter, you could
stay free because Travis hunters two players, right, you had
a generational talent in Travis Hunter. It doesn't matter what
your roster looks like. Your team is different without a
guy like that, and of course without Shador as well.
So I'm very curious They got in some great pieces
in the transfer portal, and I think they're going to
(07:41):
bring in more which will certainly make a difference. And
some good guys in the trenches looks like they're really
which can certainly make a difference. Obviously, got a little
coaching changes as well, So I feel like we go
into this year and there's a lot of unknown ben
and but at the same time, the expect is just
beside the scrutiny is going to be just as high.
(08:03):
So is Juju ready is a big question. I'd love
for them to get a big, bruising running back because
you're gonna need one if you got a freshman quarterback.
I think so it's just going to be so interesting
because it's truly it was a short era, but it
was a very dynamic era at Colorado, and now it's
a completely new era. What is what are these young cats?
(08:24):
How do they elevate? Right, It's just gonna be It's
gonna be fascinating.
Speaker 2 (08:28):
Yeah, certainly. I was talking with romy Bean from CBS.
Speaker 1 (08:30):
The Denver Nuggets have been a team that looked like
they're lacking something. This year, the Phoenix Songs went to
a different lineup tonight, benching Nurkic and Bradley Beal. Beale
said that he'd be willing to wave his no trade
clause for Denver among two other teams.
Speaker 2 (08:43):
Uh, would you would you.
Speaker 1 (08:44):
Want the Nuggets to go out there and try and
trade for a Bradley Beal?
Speaker 3 (08:47):
You know? So conflicted on Bradley Beal because to me,
there's been so much hype around him, and it's what
has that done for any team? You know, there's been
you know a lot of money in Phoenix, you know,
bucked up so much right to trade for him, and
(09:10):
I don't feel like the results were worth were worth
all that it took to get a Bradley Beal. I
guess on the flip side of that, I truly believe
that Nicola Jokic makes any and every player there absolutely best.
So I do think that you can bring in a
dynamic playmaker like that and you get more out of
them here. So I think that that's certainly something that's
up for consideration. I think it almost seems like the
(09:32):
Nuggets you want to see them make a move then
because because they need something right, Like this team has
been been really a weird start of the year and
very up and down, and I think Russell Westbrook has
been an undeniable, fantastic spark to this team. You love
it when he's in the starting lineups. He's dynamic, his
(09:53):
energy is competitiveness, and I feel like this team could
just benefit from a move made that feeling, that investment,
that partnership is making, that front office is making saying no,
we want to win now, right, because I think that
there's been has a weird vibe if you if you
want to call it that, throughout the year. So I
think a move would be significant in terms of you've
(10:16):
seen it before, right, You bring in a player and
it really sparks the team. So I would I would
be interested to see I'd like them to see them
make a move. And then I think a Bradley Beal
and anyone with Kolia, which becomes more dynamic. But I
think he could be really dynamic on this offense. The
big thing for the Nuggets, I think is you have
(10:36):
to find really tenacious defensive players. You gotta you know,
they mean that their offense has been dynamic recently, they've
been a juggernaut. So I'd love to see, you know,
someone who's just just tenacious on defense and a really
impactful defensive player I think would be big for them.
Speaker 2 (10:55):
Yeah, I tend to agree with that. Talking with romy Bean.
Speaker 1 (10:58):
Back to the Broncos here, great to make the playoffs,
but you know, as much as we're jubilant about that,
you look ahead and that's a tough task to ask
to beat the Buffalo Bills in Buffalo in the early
game on the East Coast in the cold it Oh,
by the way, their quarterback is a guy that's in
contention for the MVP and Josh Allen. Broncos pulled it
off last year with Russell Wilson and Justin Simmons. Moreau
(11:18):
had at a forced fumble I think it was or
an interception.
Speaker 2 (11:21):
I mean, a lot of guys that contributed last year
that aren't here anymore.
Speaker 1 (11:25):
How does this team find a way to get past
the Buffalo Bills.
Speaker 3 (11:30):
Yeah, I mean, like when you first look at it,
you're like, whoof? And it is a tall tasks being
in Buffalo. It's probably gonna be the coldest game of
Bonex's career. Right, Which is is it a factory? It
might be, right, realistically, that's just a realistic thing. It's
gonna be a loud as hell. Right, you're gonna practice
your silent Caden's all of that, like all the elements
(11:52):
that are the most challenging elements comes through in Buffalo
might not be showing. Sure, I looked it up. It's
like thirty one degrees, but right now it says the
real field's going to be like seventeen. It's Whitney. So situationally,
you kind of got everything going against you. But I
think the biggest thing with is how they handle Josh Allen,
(12:12):
right is, and for him, it's always the like second phase.
You've got to you know, it's like it feels like
it's the standard coach speak, but you really got to
make him get to his second to his third read
because he's just once he gets out of the pocket
and he starts, you know, as living. I mean, that's
what makes it so dynamic, his ability to run to
(12:32):
extend plays. He's so dynamic. He plays like a lot
of hero Ball in a lot of ways. Right, And
it's it. I think it really starts and ends with
how you handle Josh Allen and how much pressure you
can put on him and how much you can avoid,
you know, letting him stick to what he wants to do.
I think that's the biggest thing. I think, Oh, you
(12:53):
look at Buffalo, it's interesting because you know you can
put past with him wherever you want. Buffalo doesn't necessarily have,
you know, super dynamic playmakers, right. I think tight end
tight end is something that you that could be an
issue that they got to look out for because I
feel like tight ends has been an issue for a
long time. But you know, maybe that's something that you
(13:13):
can shift that on. But I think you have a
lot of flexibility with what you're going to do with
pat when you look at at the receiving core with
these guys, So I think it's going to be really
really interesting in that aspect. But it really does start
an end I think with Josh Allen and so far
it's a team. Then you know what's been so cool
this year, Like the moment's never been too big for them,
The pressure's never been too big for them. They have
(13:34):
these really high stake moments and they continue to answer
the battle even though they're young teams. So I feel
going into it, I feel confident that they'll be able
to handle the pressure in the expectations. But we're going
to find out, right you know, there's not a ton
of guys that have playoff experience, and that is something different.
But I think that this team really does have the
(13:55):
right mentality despite being young. But I do think those
are the two big things. And then just the elements
of playing in Buffalo. You know, it's that's not as
hostile and harsh as as it can get.
Speaker 1 (14:07):
Yeah, certainly his last one from me Rome and talk
with Roby being from CBS. This team is young, the
third youngest team in the NFL that might be too
young to know what they do or don't know what
they don't know kind of thing, and that that may
be may be helpful and beneficial. They don't know that
they're not supposed to be competitive in a game they
open as eight, eight and a half point dogs too,
you know, to Buffalo. They don't know that they're supposed
to be not prepared when you go into an East
(14:27):
Coast early game. That kind of stuff.
Speaker 2 (14:29):
As we look at this and we look at this
youth movement, we look at.
Speaker 1 (14:31):
What the synergy that George and Sean Payton have had
and the ability to build this team the way.
Speaker 2 (14:36):
That the the coach needs from.
Speaker 1 (14:39):
The general manager, and we talk about George, It's interesting
to look at the as the narrative has changed quite
a bit on him. You know, it feels like that
people are ready to run him out of town a
couple of years ago, but you look at the draft
picks he's had that they have just been gang bus
hitting like gangbusters.
Speaker 2 (14:53):
And then you know the way that they work together.
Speaker 1 (14:55):
I think that Sean pulls George out of his more
conservative nature. I think I think George slows Shawn's aggressive
nature down a little bit to a manageable level. What
do you think of the synergy between those two in
a partnership that a lot of people didn't expect the
last Yeah, you know.
Speaker 3 (15:10):
I'd love what you brought. That upstend me because you remember
like that first year and everybody kind of said, oh,
you know, Sean's going to kick him out after a year,
And to be fair, George probably was on an audition, right.
It was Seawn's team. He was given the keys to
the castle. And it's been cool to watch that dynamic
and how they both have very much, you know, earned
each other's respect, and there has been a lot of
(15:31):
joking about what Sewn wants to trade away all the
picks right. George wants to acquire as many picks as possible,
and they've managed to find this this happy medium. And
I think the thing with George Peyton that's undeniable is
he's a fantastic evaluator of talent. And so when everybody
wanted to run him out the building of way Tom,
everybody you know, because he does he does. It's hard
(15:54):
to find a GM that I think has such a
good eye for talent, and he had that in minnesot
as well, and I think there's a lot of Yang
yin and yang. But the other thing is that Sean
has a vision for what kind of player he wants,
what kind of mental makeup and physical makeup, and he
knows exactly what he wants, and George has been able to,
i think, join in and help him find those kinds
(16:15):
of players. So it has been like a great relationship,
maybe an unexpected marriage that people didn't think would last,
but they worked together very well and they're building it
exactly in Sean's vision. And when he touched players in
the locker room, they talk about this too, and they'll say,
without mentioning with specifically, it was only a couple of
weeks ago, I was talking to Adam Trautman about this.
(16:37):
He's obviously been a Champaigne for a long time, and
he said, you know, Sean has he knows what he wants.
And he said, even you know, there was a couple
guys last year, not the big guys you know that
you know, just didn't fit the mold, and so Sean
moved on from them. Like it is a very It's
very clear in that locker room what the standard is,
and it's very clear that if you're not bought in,
(16:59):
you're going to hit the road. And so all of
the players have bought it. And I think having a
high standard like that is a good thing. You know,
that's good old fashioned football. It's how you run a
pro team. So it has been cool to see how
they run it together and they've really found success.
Speaker 1 (17:12):
Yeah, I think so too, And I really do think
that that's been a bright spot as they continue to
build this thing out.
Speaker 2 (17:16):
Rome.
Speaker 1 (17:17):
You appreciate your time this evening edit a break, look
forward to talking to you downline.
Speaker 3 (17:21):
Oh, it's been fun and cheer's the Buffalo.
Speaker 2 (17:27):
Yeah, I appreciate you. Canna get you go out there.
You're gonna get some wings.
Speaker 3 (17:30):
Oh I am, I'm gonna go get some wings and
freeze my tale. All right, Well, to check out the tailgates,
I really try to jump through a table.
Speaker 1 (17:37):
We need we need video of that. We need video
you jumping through a table. And I've got some restaurant
recommendations for you.
Speaker 2 (17:41):
Ah you later. I'll appreciate you.
Speaker 3 (17:43):
I appreciate you.
Speaker 2 (17:44):
My guys.
Speaker 1 (17:44):
All right, bye, Ruddy Bean CBS. We'll be back after this.
I wanted to get to a recap there, mister Grant Smith.
The recap of the week that was a final regular
season week for the NFL. Let's start off with the
Browns getting pasted by the Ravens.
Speaker 2 (18:03):
The snap turned hand off left Henry looking for a block.
Speaker 3 (18:06):
He's in there, and.
Speaker 4 (18:08):
Thirty five thirty time the left side Tunny stills under
the tackle off to ten. He's in for a second
time that I touchdown Ravens Terrek Henry goes for forty
three yards.
Speaker 5 (18:19):
Yeah, all Ravens all day and they cover that twenty
point spread. That call courtesy of Westwood One and J. P. Shadford.
Speaker 2 (18:26):
Well, it's funny.
Speaker 1 (18:27):
I moved the line on that went up to twenty
four and a half and it was sort of sweating for.
Speaker 2 (18:31):
A minute there. They still covered They still covered it.
Speaker 1 (18:34):
I moved it from from twenty to twenty four and
a half and they still covered it. That is uh,
that was ridiculous. Yeah, this game was, I mean, it
was utterly ridiculous. It was all Baltimore or Cleveland didn't
have a prayer in it. Starting Bailey Zappi through two interceptions.
It was just, you know, they were benching most everybody
that they had. Jared Judy still wound up being leading
receiver for the Brown six catches sixty three yards, but
that these really weren't playing guys, and the Ravens were
(18:57):
just pad. The totals for the awards are gonna run.
I got there at carry twenty carries, heart thirty eight yards,
two touchdowns.
Speaker 2 (19:03):
The only thing that came out of that game that
was a negative is eight flowers hurt.
Speaker 1 (19:06):
Probably done for the year and certainly for a little
bit longer in that one, so that may affect Baltimore
down the stretch. Bengler's taken a beglars Bunglers, Bengals taking
on the Pittsburgh Steelers at.
Speaker 2 (19:19):
Pittsburgh and the others. Some people who thought that Pittsburgh
might have a chance, and they were wrong.
Speaker 1 (19:24):
Fought second and three, Borough whips it over the middle
of caught by Chamar Chase.
Speaker 2 (19:29):
Hete beat Trice again, this time from a touchdown.
Speaker 4 (19:33):
Chamar Chase a touchdown waiting to happen, and it happens
on the.
Speaker 5 (19:38):
Opening Tribe that call courtesy of Ted Imrich with Westwood One.
And what amazing years from Joe Burrow and Jamar Chase,
but not enough to sneak into the playoffs, just not.
Speaker 1 (19:47):
They fired Luanaroumo today. They'll be looking for a new
defensive coordinator there in Cincinnati. I was one of the
people who thought Pittsburgh could have won that, and they
should have won that.
Speaker 2 (19:55):
I think down there at the end, George Pickens just
completely misran around. Didn't catch a ball all day either.
He looked like you, Davie looks like he's playing a
game with boxing gloves on, you know, no no visits.
Speaker 1 (20:03):
And then Pat fryer Muth, who's been reliable all day,
catches eighty five yards in a touchdown.
Speaker 2 (20:08):
Wilson hits it with a perfect slant and.
Speaker 1 (20:10):
He just just dropped it, just just looked at the
ball like he was trying to catch the ball between
two frying pans.
Speaker 2 (20:15):
It was.
Speaker 1 (20:16):
It was ridiculous as the Steelers choked that game away,
a game they should have won in the end.
Speaker 2 (20:20):
Not bitter about it for the Pro Pickum Challenge or anything.
Just say, I'm not saying just Sam. Panthers taking on
the Falcons and what a sweet, sweet way to end
the season for coach Dave Canalis, the youngest under center.
Here's the snap. Sanders up the middle.
Speaker 4 (20:35):
Charging through the end zone, touchdown Carolina, the Panthers walking
off to end the season.
Speaker 2 (20:43):
Yeah, I want to win for the Panthers.
Speaker 5 (20:45):
It looks like Bryce Young is going to be their
guy next year unless you say something different here in
a second.
Speaker 2 (20:50):
But that call courtesy of w RFX A Niche Shrof.
Speaker 1 (20:53):
Yeah no, I mean, if you're not gonna be a
playoff team, the best thing you can do is win
that last game of the season so you don't have
the sour taste losing for eight.
Speaker 2 (21:00):
Months just sitting there. Man, the Falcons won an abject disaster.
What a disappointment.
Speaker 1 (21:07):
Drake London did his best ten catches, one hundred and
eighty seven yards and two touchdowns, Bijon twenty eight carries
one hundred and seventy yards, two touchdowns. But in the end,
I mean it's just it was the Falcons just couldn't
keep up with believe it or not, the Carolina Panthers,
who showed a ton of signs of license.
Speaker 2 (21:21):
Bryce Young came back after being benched.
Speaker 1 (21:24):
Young twenty five thirty four two fifty one, three touchdowns,
no pick, one hundred and twenty three and a half
quarterback rating. Miles Sanders seventeen carries sixty six yards.
Speaker 2 (21:32):
We saw Jalen.
Speaker 1 (21:33):
Cochers seven catches sixty two yards, also threw an eighteen
yard pass in that one. Miles Sanders three catches fifty
yards at a touchdown. On top of that, Timmy Tremble
got a touchdown, David Moore got a touchdown, everybody got
a touchdown as the Carolina Panthers win that one in overtime.
Speaker 2 (21:51):
Our Washington commanders take it on the Dallas Cowboys. Mario
